And so, we continue delving into the more serious parts of Nagisa's arc proper. I expect this episode to continue building up all the crucial points of Nagisa's arc, and we'll probably have some big cliffhanger for this episode. Akio's comments on the preview kinda intrigue me, I guess if we will get a deeper insight of what he referred to on this episode. Seeing how Kyou, Ryou and kotomi will fit into the grander scheme of things will be interesting as well.

seems so quick after waiting for last weeks :)

This surely will be an intersting episode ... I want to see how they play this with so few episodes left in the series.

After this episode there isn't much time left, so unless they're doing yet more changes these last few episodes should definitely be solely focused on Nagisa and Tomoya. I'm hoping that they include some of my favourite scenes from the Nagisa Arc (I won't state what they are, for obvious reasons) otherwise I'm not going to be a happy pappy.

I've heard from many people that Nagisa's is the most 'heartwarming' arc of them all.

So I'm almost expecting a string of 10s from me for the next 3 episodes. :)

I guess this is my first real episode as an experianced gamer... Guess it'll be a bit different of an experiance. :)

More Tomoyo/Kyou beatings of Sunohara would be nice. :)

From what you're saying..the episode looks quite packed yeah o.0
But I'm looking forward to it very much

Nagisa performing the play? o.0 You mean Nagisa talking about the play to Tomoya, right? I mean, this happens before Tomoya will talk to akio about nagisa (what we see in the preview).

And picnic? Omg...if that is what I think it is...then I need to see this episode =O

my mistake, I meant

Yes, Nagisa talking about the illusionary world play.
Also, to show it is kinda special, the screen fade white, with a "CLANNAD" logo before starting the OP

As for the picnic, no, no kiss unfortunately, but a strong flag nevertherless (well several of them XD)

Let's see, after watching the episode, bullet summary:
Episode 20: Bullet summary (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2008/03/06/clannad-episode-20/)
This episode was really the usual breath taker, and the mood is set for the true dish of clannad, ufufufu.

Finally, first direct mention of the Illusionary World by Nagisa, followed by the screen fading white and revealing the "CLANNAD" title, symbolizing the real beginning of the Clannad story. This is just the calm before the storm, brace yourselves for the last two episodes as well as hopefully a second series.

Yukine's role has been slightly altered into being a matchmaker for Tomoya and Nagisa (Fuuko did not speak, so she doesn't count), while not a bad idea, it does take the "magic" away from her magic spells, as she saw Nagisa walking in the hallway before suggesting Tomoya should try after poor Sunohara's failed to find a girl after five attempts.

Speaking of Sunohara, while often an idiot, this time he's at the right place at the right time, giving Tomoya the nudge he needs when he got cold feet and ran away from the Furukawa Picnic. Though still no confession or kiss yet.

I'll write a bit more in the Spoilers thread, so join me there if you already know the story.

What an super-b, heartwarming episode this was.

Indeed, this episode was excellently suited to give us a taste of CLANNAD's main theme and message. Specially the last scene showing us the Furukawa family+Okazaki, followed by the ending song was specially touching despite (or maybe because of) its simplicity. I'm glad KyoAni shut me up and my prediction about this episode ending in a cliffhanger, this way was way better.

That rainbow bread looks intimidating...

Good old dad. Accidentally trip up your words when Nagisa is praising Okazaki. What was that again? "Does that make you fall in love with him all over again?" Nagisa's answer? "Yes" but she catches herself half-way. Hmm... >.>

I'm still watching the Raw ..... but I had to comment ... I was so happy to see the Title after Nagisa's description of the story! ... I mean yes we see it each week... but not like that :) it finally begins! *wakuwaku* can't wat to see the rest of this episode. :)

edit: okay.. and I have to say I Want some rainbow-pan!

edit edit:

I'm going to write my commentary AS I watch the episode... I guess because the op has me fired up ... so I would suggest not reading this until after you watch the episode..

Nagisa no renshu.... I had a feeling as soon as she started talking about it, it was going to be inevitable... just love the whole conversation ... leading up to him asking if she can remember the title, but she can only explain it... of course I won't spoil you on IT ... but the pan up, fade out into the title made me so happy knowing what will come next. :)

I love just how expressive they made the Robot ... even without a word.... you see it...

Sanae-san running away with Ossan in pursuit never ceases to amuse me. :)

Sorry, Rainbow-pan... sugoi! even if Okazaki doesnt care or understand.

Nope, Okazaki, it wasn't Ossan or Sanae-san that told her such a horrible story. Keep trying.

Watching Youhei look civilized I couldn't help but wadger the time until craziness... I guessed 15 seconds... looks like it was 18 seconds... :) Too bad the school doesnt have the story. Keep trying Okazaki, you'll find it!

Good Luck Charm / Love spell time again!

straight faced: "About Nagisa right?"
And then she sees Nagisa and makes him do it.. I love it... but of course.. it's FUUKO! Good work Okazaki ... although Fuuko doesn't make a very convincing zombie... but at least it wasn't in vain, Nagisa still gets the win!

So she tells the whole theatre club.. love the response of Kotomi-chan~~~!
Do you? Do you remember Okazaki!?

Making us think she found it, but it's only a cute Dango ... Dango! Dango! Dango! ^^

You only realize that after you call her?

O freezed in a perfect pose of Akio-san at 12:02 .... didn't know a guy could do that ... anyhow.. was going to say ... I love how it takes them over 15 seconds to realize Sanae-san is right there serving them Tea when they are about to keep this a secret from her :)

You two, your being loud, please quiet down..... they STILL haven't gotten away from her :)

Fade out BGM ... serious part to come....

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO OOOOOO
dont tell me they are going to cut this down ...
they did.... they did ..... :-(

Okay I'm going to re-watch that.... I honestly dont know if that is covered earlier in Nagisa's route.. but that is seen6801 material (after story) right there .... I felt WAY shorter than my translation of it ... feels like it is missnig a few of the details (all be it, they did pass through the important part of it) ...

hmm.. well I guess the roof works as a backdrop to this ... ah that is what it is... everything about the setting that goes with the story is gone ...

Okay, I'll let it go ... it works .. but makes me worried.

God I love the play on words here... er ... katakana ..
1. ピクニック (pikunikku)
2. ピクピク (pikupiku)
3. ピクリン酸 (pikurinsan)

and Nagisa's dead straight response to #3. :) and that of course it HAS to be PikuPiku! :)

"hamburger request o-shimasu" ... never thouht I'd hear that in taht way in an anime.

hehe... Okazaki still can't get used to teh family thing can he?

Youhei, stop saying things that make too much sense.

Okazaki you best be watching Ossan play!

Okay, usally I dont complain about animation... but something looks really wrong with Okazaki's legs as he gets to the base... I mean I know his pants would be weird... but it seriously looks like is left legs are broken to me in those .. less than a second? worth of frames.

But the responses to Ossan's comment make up for it I suppose :) especally Sanae-san's.

I'm glad they left it upbeat.

So the next episode is still leading up to the play.

Okay, again like I said above, I don't know if Ossan spills the beans in Nagisa's route like that, but I know that comes frmo the After Story... but the scene is different... and has even more meaning behind the confession to Okazaki at that time.... it feels lacking in some respects to me for that, considering we haven't made it to the play (which is still in Nagisa's route proper I do believe). That gives me worries about what is going to happen in the next 2 episodes, and throws in to doubt if we're going get a second season at least to me.

But looking at it from an anime-only side..... this was a vey good episode... the elements are finally falling into place. I laughed, I was moved, I cried, and I got better.... what else can you ask for? .... so if I hadn't spoiled myself by workng on the Baka-Tsuki project, I'd give it a 10/10 ... but since I have... 9/10 for making me worry.

edit edit edit?

After watching sprocket/twh

I am glad I missed a few words...

specifically the small exchange where Okazaki asks Ossan what he wanted to do, and Ossan just replied "that has nothing to do with this story" ... well so.. yes... it isn't very important ... but still...

We still are missing the reason Nagisa went outside... I mean to me that is very important.. I mean it isn't necessary, but still... it would have made it stronger.

However, on second thought.... that means we're not getting Akio's story right now.... so that actually is a good sign for the progression of a second series

Eh, KyoAni is playing with my head!

First thing that came to my mind:

Will this stuff register on a geiger counter? It'd be scary if it did. And if it did, is it munitions-grade bread?

I haven't seen the entire episode yet, but I have to say that for those who played the game, that opening sequence must have been... well, let's just say that it's nice to be reminded every once in a while that there are kinds of fanservice other than gratuitous shots of (semi-)naked women.

It's not quite continuity porn, but it's close.

Edit: Ah, it's time for Sunohara's once-a-route reminder that he is not completely worthless.

At the moment when "To be continued" popped up, my reaction to the entire episode approximately equated to, "WTF, KyoAni?! I waited a whole week, and this is as much as you give me?! Not fair, I want some more!!!"

Woo, my Yukine finally got some more screentime! ^.^
Unlike last episode, this was Clannad in its full glory again; great pace, a warm atmosphere and beautifully animated. My one 'gripe' is that
I want to see the picnic CG get animated! Unless the next episode continues from the picnic we won't get to see the first kiss the way it was in the game :( Well, we can still hope.

Other than that this episode was great as always... I could go on and on about how and why but I'm sure there'll be enough people thinking the same as me in this thread. :D

Rainbow bread... Um, the fact that it can glow on its own says that Sanae-san is most likely a mutant alien who makes everything change.

Fuuko's appearence this week again was actually really good. It made me laugh. :)

After playing through the VN, it's interesting to see the change of how I'm watching this and all. Much less to comment on, and I'm looking more at the adaptation. :p

It's an interesting mux of routes with Akio telling Nagisa's past here. It also makes me a little scared...

Interesting how Tomoya thought of his dad while in bed.

Overall, I'll give this a 10 for being just so perfect. ^_^

Also, I think I am falling in love with the wardrobe in Clannad. All of Nagisa's outfits are just cute. :)

Sunohara is becoming more and more of a legend for me. The what was once "clown" of the series somehow is turning out to be the "wise man"...I mean he is still a clown, but there is definitely more to him as he puts even the usually "right thinking" Tomoya back in his place. + Points for his reasoning...shame he still can't land a hit on a girl :heh:

The past on Nagisa was interesting...big revelation and one that has engraved into her subconcious. The story book idea she had may only be a fantasy of herself but warped in a way.

The baseball scene is most significant...they are both in love with each other, but they are too embarrassed to say  I lawled a couple of times at Nagisa's dad when he blunders with his lines again and again XD

Overall pretty satisfying :)

Wow, I just saw episode 20 and I loved it

The family theme was the main point this episode (together with Nagisa's past of course). Family is the message of this anime of course. Clannad means clan in Irish and this is often translated to family. I also like how they let the screen fade to white and showed the title of the series 'clannad' just before the OP, because you've finally seen something to tie the real world and the illusionary world together. And this illusionary world is one of the important and most mysterious aspects of this anime of course.

As expected, the story will focus on Nagisa's arc from now on and they did an excellent job this episode in my opinion. The animation was back to normal (after being so-so last episode) and the scenes were great. Some were funny, and some dead serious. The music gave an extra effect to some of the scenes as well.

And omg...zombie Fuko was just plain win XDD

And the last scene of the episode just made me feel all warm inside. The whole scene felt so natural to me.

I can't wait until next episode. They're climbing up to the climax of Nagisa's route. Akio telling Tomoya about Nagisa now is interesting though. Didn't this happen much later in the game?

Finally the ball gets rolling!

Of course, a lot is supposed to happen between this section of the story and how the School Arc ended. How they're going to do it in 2 episodes makes me wonder.

Am I the only one excited on seeing Nagisa actually perform the Illusionary World play? Not only is it a central theme to the tale but the game never really showed her preforming it, and I want KyoAni to show us dammit!:D

I really liked the whole scene with Yukine's spell, especially Tomoya shushing Fuko before she could say anything. I wonder though, does Yukine count as the first girl to talk to Sunohara after the spell? :)
Clannad means clan in Irish and this is often translated to family.
Clann means family in Irish. Clannad is the name of a band, being an abbreviation of clann as Dobhar - family from Dore.

It has been discussed before but...

The name is kind of a homage to the Irish band of the same name. CLANNAD for that band actually means Clann as Dobhar, which would translate as the family of dhore. In CLANNAD the game case, the name is supposed to stand for Clann as dango, a family of dangos, dango daikazoku :)

Actually it has a minor misinterpretation, but the general idea is there.

That was an absolutely lovely episode. First off, I'm totally shocked that it didn't end in a cliffhanger or anything even remotely like that. Kanon had a huge string of cliffhangers for the last several episodes, which was sort of frustrating at times, since there was never any resolution until the very end. The same is true for a LOT of other anime dramas, which I'm sure many people here are well aware of, lol. Anyway, the ending was still really satisfying, mostly because there was a small sense of closure. If I were going into this fresh without knowing about how the After Story would play out, I'd probably imagine that the story is seriously winding down. Sure, there's a few plot points that haven't been resolved yet, such as Tomoya's relationship with his father, or how the drama club will end up, but the series does give the feeling that it's in its home stretch. Which is a shame because, knowing what I know about the After Story, there's just still so much more juicy material to be told.

I really enjoyed the exposition of Nagisa's past. It just goes to show how some people are capable of changing so much as a result of raising children. The story of Nagisa's parents and their sacrifice for their daughter strikes me particularly hard because the balance of career and family is something that I've seriously considered and thought about for a while recently (being a pre-med student and all). It was sort of bittersweet, but also comforting, to see (admittedly fictional) characters struggle with a similar problem. It also makes me ask myself: would I be willing to make the same sacrifice? I know I'm still considering these things way too early, lol, but it's nice when a show speaks to you on a personally meaningful level.

Anyway, Nagisa and Tomoya were just SO cute together in this episode, it takes me an awful lot of self restraint to resist fanboying over them. I can't say just how satisfying it is to see their relationship beginning to culminate (and yes, I still use the word "beginning").

Also: Best Fuuko cameo ever!

I picked up Clannad again out of a lack of anything better to do lately (since I finished DS9) and haven't been particularly wowed by it over the past 5-6 episodes, but this one I felt was really good. It's a shame that as it hits the part of the story that I actually really like when I was reading the game that it's about to come to an end. The after story bit as people called it is extremely unusual to have in these types of VN's so hopefully it gets some exploration be it in a second season or an OVA or whatever.

A healthy 8/10 is in order I think. I actually like Nagisa more than most of the other characters so when she's the focus I find myself liking the series more. The others I find are either to over the top in their scenes or conform to a popular stereotype, but Nagisa just seems cute enough while still being relatively normal that she hits the right balance with me. Also somehow Sunohara is actually tolerable now, which is a big surprise. It's like when Adam Sandler learns his life lesson in every movie he's ever made with himself in it and starts to settle down instead of going ballastic every 30 seconds he's on camera. In that sense Sugita Tomokazu should have been the perfect casting choice for Sunohara. :p

I wouldn't say official although they are of course well on their way to that stage. As Sunohara pointed out during his lecture, Tomoya was actually being rather indecisive about the whole issue.

Fuuko's appearence this week again was actually really good. It made me laugh. :)

One interesting detail to note: this was the first appearance (since her arc) she didn't drop in with her little starfish intro. I think it's absence helped make the scene feel more natural.

Sunohara and Akio were just awesome this episode. Akio was just full of :heh:, while Sunohara once again displayed his wisdom and seriousness.

Cheers for more Yukine screentime. She's so dreamy... I think it's the eyes.

I pretty much expected the Furuakawa's past to be something along those lines. Still, it packed an emotional punch. The look on Akio's face and Nagisa lying near-dead in the snow....

As for the end, I'm also surprised it didn't end in a cliffhanger of sorts. However, it was very enjoyable to watch. :)

One interesting detail to note: this was the first appearance (since her arc) she didn't drop in with her little starfish intro. I think it's absence helped make the scene feel more natural.

Oh yeah. I actually thought that it might've been the real Fuuko :)

Agree big time, it's hard not to fall for their pairing they're so cute together. I really like Nagisa so im glad that this was the pairing in the end. I loved the episode my favourite so far so 10/10. Feel good stuff at its finest :)

Can't wait for next episode and conclusion.

Tomoya's feet were looking kinda weird during the baseball part, at least for one scene.

Nagisa accidentally affirming that she'd fallen in love with Tomoya again == WIN. The win was only offset by my intense expectation that Nagisa would suddenly collapse from Key AIDS when she started to run the bases. Especially when it went into slow motion, with everyone looking happy. I felt suddenly cut short when the ED started instead. ;)

Mmmm... it was a really cute episode, I have to say I'm a little bit disappointed since I was expecting her past to be something a bit more "dramatic". However ignoring that it was really nice, I loved the baseball scene hehe =w=

Meh, it all balances out. If Nagisa's past takes over the story then there wouldn't be any room left for romance, so it makes sense for other main characters to have a much more dramatic past. I really love Youhei now, and he's probably one of the best supporting characters ever.

Respect for Sunohara rising... rising...

You know what makes this show so awesome. Strong male characters. Everywhere. We have an incredible male lead in Okazaki, a strong supportive side character in Sunohara and one of the funniest characters in the show in Akio. There isn't a single male character in this show that's difficult to like, and they all have an awareness about the relationships around them that make them easy to admire, but also a number of flaws each that make them human.

The comedy in this episode was incredible. Clannad, as a comedy, is right up there with any other comedy of recent times, which is scary to consider when most of us came into this series expecting a fairly heavy drama. Sure, there's been drama, but it's very rarely been all that heavy. It's like Nodame Cantabile in that respect. The point has never been to bury the audience with drama that is overbearing, it's been to ask us to watch these characters as they go through the good times and the bad. It's been more genuinely "slice-of-life" than any of the other Key titles that have gone before it.

I'm a bit worried, though, if Clannad can tackle darker themes. I have no idea what's coming next for Nagisa, and whether Clannad will go in a darker direction (or even if it should). This is a problem with a show that hasn't been heavy (and hasn't been "light" either, it's kinda struck a balance between the two)... a sudden change in tone could be really jarring. This is probably one of the areas where I don't think Clannad has been as good as Kanon. Clannad has been better at comedy and better at romance than its predecessor, but Kanon nailed drama like only very few anime of its style have. Kanon was also better paced than Clannad has been, but I'm not going to harp on that too much, since Clannad still has two more episodes left to play with.

Nagisa's inadvertent confession at the baseball scene was brilliant.

I'm glad the animation was back up to a level that we expect from this series. But, again, I still try to imagine how awesome this series would be if all the scenes were animated as well as the other world scenes. Oh man, that'd be Shinkai-awesome.

Episode 23 will be a "summer break" episode, which is kinda out of the main plot.
Episode 24 will be a bonus episode for the DVD release. Hence why the story should be finished with episode 22.

I thought it was interesting that the last thing Sunohara said in that scene was "I'm done". Kinda reminded me of There Will Be Blood... ok, maybe it wasn't quite that profound. :p

And I have to say good episode.

Although for some reason, I couldn't help but notice that her face was looking kind of sad at the very end... Maybe I'm wrong, but for some reason, it looked like a forced smile. And this is Clannad anime I'm talking here...

Great overall episode, Sunohara & Akio owns, Fuuko is getting more screentime than all the other sub-girls, etc. etc.

I was expecting Okazaki to ask the "did you fall in love" one, and it should have been obviously anticipated that Okazaki would say something similar to Nagisa in the first place, as Akio said to Sanae.

Also I absolutely loved the Fuko appearance. She did the Micheal Jackson zombie thing from "Thriller".

That she did!

In my opinion, that's the way Fuuko should have been showing up: unexpected and for incredibly short periods of time. The lack of an intro really made the moment.

As for the rest of the episode. Nagisa's story really works for me. The main thing about it is not the traumatic event so much as the life changing result for the Furukawa family. I really think that we are more affected by the context we live in than by any individual events that punctuate our lives. Nagisa's story, so far, explains the context that we've seen. She is clearly well cared for and loved by parents that always seem to be right there, protecting her. Now we know why.

Overall, a heartwarming episode. With only a small number of episodes left in the series, this is either doing a great job of acting as an interlude before something big happens or doing a great job at winding the series down at a natural pace.

In terms of drama, imo Air > Kanon > Clannad.
Strangely similar to the order in which KyoAni produced them :D

I agree that a dramatic event would be kind of unexpected, but.......
something like an Akiko car crash doesn't seem out of the question.

And is it just me, or did the CG animation look slightly reduced in quality ?
Maybe because the other robot wasn't being animated.

Well, it has been mentioned earlier, but since its conception CLANNAD was supposed to be fundamentally different from KEY's previous works in terms of the drama. So it's not that CLANNAD's is weak at conveying drama scenes, it's just that it wasn't supposed to be like that from the start :p

Eh, even though I generally don't pay as much attention to the CG, if I didn't notice it, it probably wasn't that large of a change.
I found the animation for the girl in the scene to be great, though. It flowed with the rest of the scene even better than it had before.
I'm not an expert on the original game, but I doubt something like that would happen.
It will probably have something to do with their buried memories and whatnot.

Exactly.
It wasn't so much that KyoAni decided to make them less dramatic each time through, but that even the visual novels were made that way.

Yeah, Clannad already won by having the a more dramatic arc than Kanon, at least, in my opinion. Nothing really beats Fuko's arc, except for CCS 22, so right now it ranks #2 as best emotional arc/scene. I don't think the comedy is detriment to the anime at all like some of you are hinting, because Clannad doesn't have to be exactly like Kanon in order for it to be good.

However, on second thought.... that means we're not getting Akio's story right now.... so that actually is a good sign for the progression of a second series

really really annoyed me why they didnt just explain why nagisa went outside, would have taken an extra 20seconds. it felt completely random and lost all the impact it had in the game.

Um, they couldn't. Remember that Akio was narrating this story, so it's his conjecture that she went outside to wait for her parents to get home, and he did say that. We might never know why Nagisa went outside from her point of view.

I guess I missed something between the end of Nagisa's arc and the afterstory... for Akio is the one that tells us why she was outside in the after story... all 100 lines or so... or it seemed that long .. in an almost identical story to the one presented here that shows even more strongly why it hurt them so. Of course after doing some digging it seems that this is canon to Clannad's telling in the arc, so I can't complain I guess... eventhough I dont know why it comes twice in the story, but I didnt write it :) altough the second time includes Akio's personal plight, which makes it even more important.

Anyhow... okay, so yeah Fuuko as a zombie is growing on me... although she still doesnt seem zombie-ish to me.. but yeah, I am so thankful for the more random non-intro nature of her apperance this time. :)

Youhei always has been a good guy, I think....at least looking back.. he just likes to be playful. :)

edit:
i cannot believe fuko did the thriller ahaha

I guess it does kinda resemble part of the zomibe dance about 40 seconds after it starts (about 8 minutes in) ... of course I'd pay big bucks to see them animate the thriller dance from about 8 minutes to 10 minutes into the original video :) hehe... with Fuuko and the rest of the Clannad cast.. that would crack me up!

Even though I think this is a good episode I was bored of the slow pace of the recent episodes. Not even Fuko's appearance in this episode is good enough for me to get away of this feeling (I laughed when Yukine asked Tomoya to try out the charm after she realize Nagisa was walking toward old building).

Well, Clannad never really was supposed to be as dramatic as Air or Kanon. It was a lighter story. Although, I think that After Story was right up with Air and Kanon in terms of drama. Heck, even just look at the secondary themes.

Air- The secondary theme was about prejudice/isolation, since Yukito, Misuzu, and Kanna were all forced to be alone.
Kanon- The secondary theme here was about death, as basically all the characters had some near death experiance.
Quite morbid when you think about it. And what is Clannad's secondary theme? Moments of true happiness. :p

By the way, in terms of drama, I'm of the Kanon>Air>Clannad opinion. :p

All I can say is: Akio, you're a great dad.

In a society like Japan where men are viewed to have a higher status, it's usually just the mother that gives up her career for the sake of her child. Here we have Akio joining his wife and give up his dream for what is really important to him.

I wonder though, does Yukine count as the first girl to talk to Sunohara after the spell? :)

I had the exact same thought. she did give him instructions regarding the charm after he performed the prerequisites.

if that's not enough, she talked to him again after he did the five laps, saying "I'll get a cup of water for you"

so Yukine talked to Sunohara not just once, but twice.

Once again Clannad throws itself into the mud when it tries to add in a dramatic past. They failed with Kotomi hard, Tomoyo's lacked a good emphasis for which her past could be flowered onto the viewer as something emotional, and now Nagisa's is just presented terribly. I thought that the main girl in Clannad, while not having a sense of realism in her personality, would of at least of had a nice story to go along with. Unfortunately her story is as bogus as the character herself.

I can't but help it and feel that Tomoya likes Nagisa not just for Nagisa's personality, but mainly for the family aura she gives off. If Tomoya's family wasn't so screwed up, I would be doubtful if he ever would fall in love with her. It's quite interesting to see something like this in an anime, as I see people fall in love in real life for similar reasons. People yearn for what the other person has, it's like a jealously turned into love.

Nagisa's confession, Freudian slip anybody?

Well despite the major feelings of wanting to belch due to Nagisa this episode, I rated it an 8/10 because I really like the Tomoya scenes, Sanae spells are teh best, Akio is just a cool Dad, and that Sunohara displays his latent wisdom once again.

On a topic asking for favorite romantic couple I said Tomoya and Nagisa were coming very close to becoming one of my favorite romantic couples.

I might as well come out and say it now: after this episode, Tomoya x Nagisa have become one of my favorite couples. It seriously warms my heart every time they talk to each other.

And they complement each other very well. Sunohara eloquently pointed out the effect that Tomoya has on Nagisa, but I will add what Nagisa brings to Tomoya. I think she brings a warmth into his life that he never gets anywhere else. While I don't think Tomoya's dad is a bad person, their relationship is clearly distant and strained. There's a lack of intimacy between them, signified by the way Naoyuki talks to Tomoya and his really forced-looking smile. While I'm sure that Naoyuki does love his son deeply, the problem is that Tomoya doesn't feel like a son. He feels like a stranger and there's no love and intimacy between strangers.

When we do get insight into what exactly Tomoya's thinking, Tomoya comes across as a rather sad individual. He doesn't seem to feel like he's worth much. He seems kind of resigned to being a delinquent and loser in life. His little monologue in the basketball episode is quite telling, and even the opening lines in the 1st episode reveal his bitterness. I think this is why he's hesitant to take the next step with Nagisa, he doesn't seem to think he's worthy of affection, but I also think that's why he likes her so much. Sounds horribly cheesy, but she makes him feel like he's cared for.

I guess you could say I agree with Reckoner in that Tomoya likes her because she provides him with something he doesn't have or at least he thinks he doesn't have, but I do not see that as a negative. I think this is a good thing relationship wise because they make up for the others' weaknesses. If both people get in a relationship and improve as people because of it, I would say that's probably the best possible relationship anyone can possibly have. People who are similar do not necessarily like each other. In fact, they may end up hating each other. Probably because people who are very much alike to the point of practically being mirrors of the other also share the same weaknesses and I don't think people like to be shown that. If you put two stubborn people in the same room, they will likely fight each other. They're different in their beliefs, but they are essentially the same person in terms of personality.

I think The love between Tomoya and Nagisa is the most beautiful love I have ever seen in Galgame.

They not just only love each others, but also do their best to support each other, and This will be obviusly showed in After story.

Love is not just love, you need her,and her need you, that is a imporant part of truth love.

Indeed, personally I hadn't enjoyed the romantic chemistry two characters developed in any anime series since Jinto and Lafiel from Crest of the Stars. It even surpassed my previous second place, Sakura and Shaoran.

Pretty great episode. The arc advancement was quite nice, and I think KyoAni layed it out nicely as well. All the characters were spectacular as has been said before.

Rewatched the baseball scene again. Come on, Tomoya, go for it! :)

Was also amused by Sanae's surprise, but that doesn't lend itself well to screencapping.

Well I don't think it's a bad thing either, I find it quite beautiful for people to compliment each other like that. I agree with you that similar people tend to not be a very good match because of what you described as a "mirror" effect. It's fortunate to Nagisa x Tomoya that Nagisa gets confidence from Tomoya and that Tomoya gets his "sense of fitting in life more" (I don't quite know how to describe what he gets from Nagisa, but I understand it at least :heh:) from Nagisa.

Just started watching this ep for the second time and I just noticed something.

It's probably REALLY LATE to say this (due to it probably being in other eps)... but... I just noticed it's Keropi on Akio's apron LOL :heh:. (zoomed up at 5:00 - 5:02)

The baseball scene is my favorite this ep. followed by Sunohara giving the reality check. Too bad he hasn't found a girl yet.

Well, it would probably take you out of this world!

Yeah, she does. They mentioned that in the game. I forget what happened after...

Actually, Yukine doesn't count as the first girl to talk to him under those conditions. That's probably why you forgot what happened after.

Of course she was the first girl to talk to him technically, but she specifically said she didn't count because it wasn't the hallway. Kind of like, the spell wasn't working at that point. Kyoani didn't exploit this, but implies the failure pretty big.

I just noticed (or rather already noticed) that Kyoani does interesting sound effects. Like if it's choking, you really hear exaggerated sounds. Same goes with the Sunohara is in Tomoya's way SFX.

Good episode. I don't know which word describes it.

Though personally I thought the rainbow bread would be ... uh rainbow shaped (or rather, a half circle shaped). The shine was exaggerated though it does make the food seem freaky. Though I kind of wanted the rainbow bread to appear earlier and see the scene where Tomoya feeds Fuuko a piece of the bread while she's in a trance.

Hm, just about every character was used this episode. Looks like the Fuuko usage is balanced if you run her gag once. Since this was a different gag, and given the circumstances, it was executed amusingly.

I think what makes the Tomoya and Nagisa pairing truly beautiful has yet to be seen. O_o (Okay so that's obviously referring to after story.)

Finished episode 20…

Clannad is one of the few shows I rarely have anything to say… I simply try to enjoy it for what it is. 2 more episodes left and I’m still not that concerned on how the show is going to end. Would more Clannad be waiting for us after this season is finished? I hope so.

Anyway, I was missing Tomoyo and Kyou so much, especially the former who is probably the one with the least amount of screen time thus far. Tomoya and Nagisa looked cute together. They have what certain chemistry I haven’t found in any other anime couple. I can’t quite describe the relationship between the two when they seem to fit perfectly together.

Nagisa’s past was very touching in the Key verse. The simple act of holding hands between she and her parents was one of the most symbolic imageries as far as the show can do best. It conveys the nature of family ties with something just as simple as that. A girl whose weak body can depend solely on her parents by reaching her hands; two people who can’t help but do the same to show their affection and love for her.

Everything is going way too nice with no conflict whatsoever that I’m starting to doubt the chance of reaching a satisfactory conclusion, if any. The mysterious world is finally mentioned in the main plot, but not in a way in which it matters to me. This episode didn't give me any sense of urgency when the last episode is around the corner, but hopefully things won't be contrived or forced.

On a side note, the animation of the mysterious world is simply amazing, so smooth and detailed.

Well like many of us have echoed in previous episode threads, Nagisa's tale doesn't have much urgency and drama unless they'll show us After Story at some point. Meaning, her story and it's point will make no sense whatsoever unless we see the continuation of their tale together.

A little late but oh well.I see some people didnt like this episode i thought it was done superbly. What really got me were 4 things.

1.Tomoya blushing when runs into Tomoya Nagisa in the hall way after his love charm chat. Oh and playing another prank on Fuko just so she wouldn't speak to him. His feelings about not wanting to get into a relationship were her was great.

2.Nagisa's father and Tomoya having a heart to heart about Nagisa's past and what happened with her. I actually like this moment as it almost made them seem like friends and or father and son in law.

3.Sunohara given Tomoya a pep talk WTF and it actually made sense and was very informative has Sunohara grown nawwww we all have brief moments of clarity.

4. The whole picnic scene with the family from beginning to end was just very nice, even with Tomoya being late. Tomoya repeating the same line Nagisa's father did was a great set up for Nagisa to answer the "did you fall in love?". Her blushing was so damn cute and of course Nagisa's father goes off the deep end but i honestly feel like he actually like Tomoya its actually pretty obvious. Nagisa and Tomoya are so perfect for one another it hurts.

I just hope it ends well or we get an after story im really hoping for a good end to this folks, i dont think my fragile mental state which has been destroyed by H20, Kimikiss, and True Tears can take much more.

Well, the story right now revolves around Tomoya and Nagisa. So don't expect to see the others that much.

Watched it in the weekend. It didn't really have much happening in it, compared to the other episodes. But it still had some good moments. And it did reveal some interesting points to the story. So I'm not even close to being disappointed with it.

Go the 'requesting avatar and signature' thread. There is one there^^

And it's true that not much happened this episode. But I'm okay with that. It was a slice of life episode and they did a good job with it. They used this episode to show a bit of Nagisa's past, while they focused on the growing relationship between Nagisa and Tomoya.

The family theme was really obvious and important in this episode as well. Seeing how Tomoya has been basically accepted into the family already makes me feel happy somehow.

That was a fun episode. Nice to see the contrast in the first scene in this episode as compared to the first episode. Much to do with how they didn't knew each other, then, but the atmosphere and more notably the way Tomoya worries about Nagisa is what stood out.

Nice little bit about the past, but I doubt it's over since the issue isn't resolved. Next episode looks like it will continue on with that, though.
