View Full Version : Higurashi Game Translation Project

Greetings,
My sister and I are working on a translation of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, starting with Onikakushi. So far we've translated the prologue and the Scenario menu, along with bits of menu and minigame text; we've started roughing out Day 1 as well.
We are probably going to make decent progress with the translation. Her Japanese is good enough to read the games, while mine is slow; I want a translation so that I can find out what happens :)
It would be great if someone could taste-test our little bit of translation (the prologue & menus) and let us know how it looks. I'd prefer somebody who can read the originals well enough to judge a translation, if at all possible. Of course, we'd like to know if our English writing is good as well.
I'm not certain about my bandwidth limitations, and we don't feel ready to "publish" yet, so please PM me if you would like to have a look at our sample and give us some feedback.
Right now it's just a patch for Himatsubushi (the full set of Question-arc games), but I'm getting together a patch for the free Onikakushi demo as well.
Thanks!
Mion (Sonozaki Futagotachi)
Current Status: Onikakushi has been finished and is available on our site in demo form. Our patch for the full Himatsubushi game of course has all of Onikakushi, and also includes the first day of the second arc, Watanagashi. We plan to wait until we've finished the whole arc before doing another release. - Shion

Yup, but the translator of that version doesn't seem to have a problem with us doing our own version. We're more experienced with Japanese and are endeavoring to produce a nice, readable English adaptation. Our version has image translations as well. :)
If you'd like to see our sample, PM me and I'll send you the link.

Hi all,
Not sure how to ask otherwise since the TIPS thread is closed, but could we please have permission to use the AnimeSuki TIPS translations for our Higurashi Onikakushi+ english version?
We plan to edit for readability, but it would help a lot to use the TIPS thread as an original translation base. We'll give proper translation credit, of course.
Thank you for your consideration.

Hi all,
Our latest (beta) English patch of Onikakushi is ready; it includes up to Day 1 and TIPS 1 & 2, as well as image translations of the scenario & omake menus. PM me if you would like to beta-test the patch :D
We have patches for both the full Higurashi (first 4 games) and the demo.
We'll be trying to get Day 2 finished over the next week (Thanksgiving Break); if we can get that done and have some good feedback from the beta testing, I'll contact VisualNews about hosting the patch.
Thank you,

Hi all!
I'm pleased to announce that the Sonozaki Futago-tachi English patch for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Onikakushi (Day 3) is now ready! It includes translations for the Prologue, Days 1-3, TIPS 1-6, menu and button images, and Frederika's poem. :D
I've created a folder on RapidShare to hold our Higurashi patches. You can access it at http://rapidshare.com/users/MQK6IW.
To install the patch, simply unzip the contents into a subdirectory of the original Japanese game; double-click "onscripter-en.exe" to play.
I'll put any future patches in that folder, so you don't have to worry about finding dead links months from now - just check the folder for what's new. :)
Please let us know what you think! :)
Also let me know if you have problems installing the patch.
Mion (Sonozaki Futagotachi)
:o, thank you very much, I'll be sure to check it later.

Hmm... I'm not replicating the problem. Are you using the onscripter-en.exe that I provided in the package? Which operating system do you have? Are you playing the full game or the demo?
I'd like to get it working for you.... it's embarrassing to have it crash like that.
(By the way, the fact that the first "higurashi" is not noted is somewhat deliberate - he's not really in a mood to explain words at that time ;) )

Ok, I replicated the error on my desktop computer, which is a Core 2 Duo running XP. What kind of processors are you running on?
I'm checking the onscripter code, and I'll update the patch once I fix the bug.
----------------
Ok, I'm pretty sure that it's an onscripter bug. I've tracked down what kinds of commands are running when the game halts (there are other halt points). I'm not sure, though, if it's onscripter code or an SDL library that is causing the problem....
Perhaps for now, those of you who are encountering the bug (which seems to happen on Core 2 Duo systems) should use the insani version of onscripter (which is included in the Minagoroshi translation patch). Use the same install process as the Minagoroshi patch.

Well
My comment was more directed to sound novels and the likes
But, anyway,
it's just that I heard on some other forums people whining that they changed their OS to Vista and they got problems with their games (sound novel) when it worked fine on XP
Maybe it's just their own system peculiarities that caused this :confused:

I'm quite sure it's a problem with some onscripter versions on some kinds of processors. I was able to replicate the same problem using my onscripter, playing the original Japanese game, on Windows XP (so it's not just a Vista problem). I don't encounter the bug on my laptop, which runs XP but has a Pentium III.
I'm using a modified version of Haeleth's latest onscripter build. Both my modified version and the original Haeleth binary have this problem. The older insani onscripter that comes with Minagoroshi doesn't have the problem. I'm still not sure if it's a change in the onscripter code or a bug in a newer SDL library, so I'll just have to do some debugging.
It's a real shame, since I made a number of bugfixes to onscripter that improve the performance of Higurashi...
EDIT: I provided a link and instructions for a temporary workaround for the bug, in Post #164.

Minagoroshi-hen is only translated up until chapter 7, and Matsuribayashi-hen isn't tranlslated at all. I think what may be confusing you is the way the Japanese games were released. Each game contained a few older games too:
Onikakushi-hen - Onikakushi-hen only
Watanagashi-hen - Onikakushi-hen + Watanagashi-hen
Tatarigoroshi-hen - Onikakushi-hen + Watanagashi-hen + Tatarigoroshi-hen
Himatsubushi-hen - Onikakushi-hen + Watanagashi-hen + Tatarigoroshi-hen + Himatsubushi-hen
Meakashi-hen - Meakashi-hen only
Tatarigoroshi-hen - Meakashi-hen + Tatarigoroshi-hen
Minagorsohi-hen - Meakashi-hen + Tatarigoroshi-hen + Minagorsohi-hen
Matsuribayashi-hen - Meakashi-hen + Tatarigoroshi-hen + Minagorsohi-hen + Matsuribayashi-hen
Wow that's really good news! Gonna try it right now! xD

Hi all,
I fixed that "halting" bug some of you encountered! Turns out one of the libraries, smpeg, has a problem with multicore processors (like Core 2 Duo). I found some fixes online, rebuilt, and it works! :D
I'm updating the Onikakushi patches to include the fixed onscripter-en.exe; those of you who downloaded a translation patch before Dec. 15 can get just the fixed onscripter here: removed link
Let me know if you find other bugs. :heh:

Wow o.o I already read the 3 first translated days and it is turning out awesome =O... And also tried the minigames too, though it had only the difficulty levels translated xD! Good job, Sonozaki Futagotachi! Can't wait for the rest of the game!

1. Make sure your system is Japanese enabled.
You can find step-by-step instructions how to enable Japanese read/write capability for English language based Windows XP here (http://home.comcast.net/~kagamix2/xp-compatible/japanese_setting.html).
This link doesn't work anymore ... could anyone point me in the direction of similar instructions? Also, I have Vista -- will this cause me problems? Thanks in advance. :)

Well, I'm not quite sure about Vista, but here's another page that describes what to do on XP: http://greggman.com/japan/xp-ime/xp-ime.htm
You can stop after the step where you set Japanese as "Language for non-Unicode programs" and reboot, unless you'd like to install support for typing Japanese text.

(Vista isn't all bad, it mostly sucks because I have Home Premium which was a mistake, I should have shelled out for Ultimate. At least then I could have downgraded for free to XP instead of having to buy another copy of it ...)

After getting highly addicted to Higurashi no Naku Koro ni after watching the anime seasons, I decided I would love to actually play through the original games. Of course, I dont know Japanese, so that makes it quite hard.
I just found your patches and tried it out with the demo, and it was quite good. Means that there is more hope for me to play the games then "learn to read Japanese".
Great work, and I wish you best of luck in doing this.
Just one quick thing I wouldnt mind asking - is it possible to set onscripter-en to a certain window size? Unfortunetly for me, the Window is a bit small on my screen now, and the --fullscreen option plays weirdly with my screen setup (works fine if I disable all my other screens, but thats a hastle). Any ideas on that topic?
Klashikari
2008-01-04, 10:57
In most -if not all- Visual novel, you cannot customize the window size.
In case of Higurashi, you simply can't do that. Either the standard size or full screen.
Euphemism
2008-01-04, 11:02
Try changing your screen resolution. Granted, that will mess up your desktop icons if you have a lot of them, but you shouldn't really be having more than 5 or 6 icons on your desktop (I have over 110 -_-; )

Here's some exciting news for those of you who are interested in getting the Higurashi visual novels but scared by the shipping costs:
Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the suspense doujin visual novel games from 07th Expansion, are becoming available for download! The first game in the franchise (containing the "Question" arcs Onikakushi-hen through Himatsubushi-hen) became available on New Years Eve on various download sites (http://07th-expansion.net/dl_tenpo.htm) at the price of 1575 yen. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai (featuring the "Answer" arcs Meakashi-hen through Matsuribayashi-hen) will be available starting January 25th, 2008 at 2100 yen. Finally, the fandisc Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei will be available for download starting February 22nd, 2008 at 1050 yen.
So, if you can muddle through a Japanese online ordering system, you can download Higurashi (also Kai & Rei later this year) without having to deal with shipping!
Shion and I already bought all three games, but we hope someone will come along and recommend which download store to use and maybe give some instructions for ordering.
Enjoy! :D

Dang... Even if it just used some trick to trick it into double the normal size it would work fine for me. Oh well..... maybe I will play it only on my laptop :D
As for my desktop icons, I dont worry about that. I have a program that saves their posistions for me. (I also have more icons then I use)

Just want to warn people, there's been a problem with running the translation patch on those purchased downloads of Higurashi that I posted about earlier.
It looks like at least some of the sound files are encrypted, so that onscripter isn't able to play them. You can't play the original JP game using onscripter, either. :(
Sorry about this, for those of you who went and bought the download games already... I suppose you could run the translation and the original game side by side, to get the sound effects that way... :heh: Well, I hope you can still enjoy our translation.
What a pity, the purchaseable downloads seemed like such a perfect solution for non-Japanese to get the games and enjoy them... :(
Mion (Sonozaki Futago-tachi)
EDIT: I've produced a fix for the sound files problem! Check Post #199 for the link. Now you can go ahead and purchase the downloadable Higurashi and still get to enjoy the translation! :)

Are you sure they are encrypted and it's not the issue with (for example) different codec?
Sonozaki Futagotachi

Are you sure they are encrypted and it's not the issue with (for example) different codec?
The wav sound files in question are nearly identical to their counterparts from the CD release Higurashi, except for the first 64 bytes, which are effectively "garbage".
The download-release Higurashi seems to use an overlaid software purchase manager (SOFT-Denchi) which is used for DRM, and 64 bytes is a common block size for encryption schemes, so I'm quite sure that's what's going on.
At the least, only the files in the WAV directory are affected; the files in the subdirectories WAV\LP and WAV\minigame are not encrypted.
I can suggest a temporary partial solution: download the Higurashi demo here (http://07th-expansion.net/Soft/Taiken.htm) and install it. Now, copy (or move) the top-level WAV directory to the folder that contains the higurashi translation patch files (NOT the original JP game); you don't need to include the subdirectories of WAV. This will at least take care of sound effects that show up in Onikakushi. There are other sounds that get used in the other 3 games, but at least this will take care of most of them.
Some of the sound effects files in the demo are different, but not so that it'd ruin your enjoyment, I think.
Hope this helps,
Mion (Sonozaki Futagotachi)

I've gotten together more of an actual fix for the unplayable sound files in paid download versions of Higurashi. You can get the zip file at: link removed
Extract the files in wav_fix.zip to the translation patch directory, and run onscripter.exe to play. (You can remove the WAV directory from the translation patch folder, if you did my temporary solution using the Higurashi demo.)
The (soon to come) Day 4 release will have this fix more tightly integrated, but I thought folks would appreciate being able to have a fix right away.
You don't need to get this fix if you're playing the demo or CD release of Higurashi, but if you do it won't hurt anything ^_^
Enjoy!

To install a patch, simply unzip the contents into a subdirectory of the original Japanese game; double-click "onscripter-en.exe" to play.
I've also added a version of onscripter for all you Mac OS X users; download it from http://rapidshare.com/files/83920439/onscripter-en-20080112.dmg. You should be able to drop the onscripter-en.app file from the dmg image into your translation patch subdirectory, and double-click to play.

Okay, dumb question. If we've got day 1-3, are we supposed to save over the old patch files or create a new subdirectory? I saved over them but when I try to continue from my old save, the program loads the background scene and then closes immediately, so maybe I just installed it wrong.
Also, in regards to your PM to me -- after I couldn't continue my old game with the new patch I tried starting over again and it wound up freezing on me again. I was speeding through the dialogue with the control button at the time, though, so that might have been a factor. In a little while I'll try playing it normally and see what happens.
I'm sorry for not responding to you by the way, it's been a busy week for me. :)

Technically, you should be able to just write over the Day 1-3 patch files, but it would be safest to just create a new subdirectory and delete the older patch directory once you know the new one works.
Mion (Sonozaki Futago-tachi)
EDIT:
Also be sure you have the Demo patch for the Demo game, and/or the Full patch for the Full game! I was able to replicate the "close immediately after launching" bug when I was running the Full patch on the Demo game. ;)
But if you still have problems even though you're running the right patch in a new subdirectory, be sure to let me know.

Ok, I have downloaded the demo version, and the patch for days 1-3, but I have no idea what a subdirectory is or how to get the patch to work with the game. When I click on onscripter-en it pops up for like 2 seconds and then goes away. Can anybody help me? Please and thank you ^^

To get it to work
1. Download the demo and the patch
2. install the demo
3. Find out where you installed the demo
4. Go there and make a new folder called "English" (without the quotes)
5. Then copy the folder called "WAV" into "English"
6. Then put all the files that came with the patch into "English"
7. Click onscripter-en
8. Play the game

Nice set of instructions, but you don't need to copy the WAV folder to "English"; the onscripter-en in our patch will search its current directory and parent directory for files. (Nice not having to duplicate all these big files, neh?)

It'd be better if you got the patch for days 1-4, by the way... we've made a number of fixes since the Day 3 patch.
And... it looks like RapidShare is having problems :upset:. So I created a folder on Mediafire: http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=4259cafc79f6687e4012e8015643d9c8b546d82d aef7d21b

Ok, I figured out why the program would close when you try to load a saved game. It's not that you've got the wrong patch, or that something's wrong with the program.
It seems that the save files store the "current position" within the script file, probably the current character.
Since we added some text in the earlier Days (1-3), that must've changed which part of the script a save file would point to. In your case, it's pointing to a spot that causes an incomplete command, so the program exits.
I guess save files aren't geared as much towards changing scripts, like ours. Man, I wish save files were defined more intelligently than that... but it looks like that means we need to avoid changing text in earlier days when possible. At the least, now we know what the problem is.
Sorry about that,

Just kidding. I get the feeling we'd get in trouble if we charged for it.
Though I wonder if, after we finish Onikakushi, we could contract to do a legit translation; what's involved in licensing, anyway?

Money and lawyers. You're better off not asking to license it, and instead try to get his approval for the patch, as long as you encourage people to buy the game. This has worked before. And the fact that you're dealing with a doujin writer and his own work, instead of a corporation increases your chances several-fold.

It would be awesome if you tried that. I'd be careful though and not let on that you've actually released a patch so far, just that you've been working on it and have something to show for it.
Mint Kashiro
2008-01-23, 15:19
I agree. If you can get in contact, make sure to show how you would provide patches (don't say you have been yet, but don't really say you haven't been either) and that they would certainly require the purchase of the game to use.
If it promotes people buying the product, doujin game artists seem to be okay with translation patches as it helps to further spread their work.

Hi folks,
I've figured out the problem of your saved games not loading when you get a new patch. It has to do with the savefile storing a particular line of the script to start from. Unfortunately, when you save on the first page of a new Day, the savepoint is not in that day, but in a little bit of "jump" code that's run just before the Day starts. This jump code is near the end of the file.
Needless to say, when we add the translation for a new Day to the script, the saved starting line no longer points within that jump code block, and you get... who knows what.
I've fixed it by adding code to the script to force storing the savepoint at the beginning of each Day. So now the saved games won't be broken. That's the good news! :D
The bad news is that it's fixed starting with the coming new patch, so your save games from Day 4 and earlier will definitely be broken with the Day 5 patch we're releasing in a few hours. Sorry about that. :(:heh:
But at least you won't be having that problem with any future patches! :)

The Sonozaki Futago-tachi English patch for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Onikakushi (Days 1-5) is now ready! Check out our RapidShare folder at http://rapidshare.com/users/MQK6IW.
You may download the translation patch for the full version of the game (aka Himatsubushi-hen) at http://rapidshare.com/files/86415675/_Sonozaki_Futago-tachi__Higurashi_-_Onikakushi_Day5.zip
Here's the translation patch for the demo version of Higurashi: http://rapidshare.com/files/86415676/_Sonozaki_Futago-tachi__Higurashi_Demo_-_Onikakushi_Day5.zip
If you experience problems with downloading from RapidShare, you can try our folder on MediaFire (http://www.mediafire.com/?sharekey=4259cafc79f6687e4012e8015643d9c8b546d82d aef7d21b).
To install a translation patch, simply unzip the contents into a subdirectory of the original Japanese game; double-click "onscripter-en.exe" to play.
You can download the demo game here (http://07th-expansion.net/Soft/Taiken.htm). The download mirror sites are at the bottom of the page; follow the directions for which mirrors to use.
Someone put together a guide for buying Higurashi through one of the paid download sites; you can find it here (http://www.oishii-manga.org/higurashi/higurashidl.html). Let us know if you have trouble.
If you use Mac OS X, you can download a OS X version of onscripter-en from http://rapidshare.com/files/83920439/onscripter-en-20080112.dmg. You should be able to drop the onscripter-en.app file from the dmg image into your translation patch subdirectory, and double-click to play.

Anyway, Day 5 contains more new material that wasn't in the anime, so enjoy! :) We cleaned up some text in Day 4 as well, and of course there's that savegame fix I mentioned in my last post.
This release came pretty soon after Day 4, but don't go expecting to get the next release that quickly :eyebrow:! The next section (Day 9) is much longer than previous Days.
Please let us know what you think!

Oh good! I haven't had time to play so I haven't started day 4 yet. Now I don't have to start over again. :)
edit: Okay, ugh, sorry to have to keep reporting problems. :( I am able to open up my save now without it crashing. However, the place where I saved comes up in Japanese. I'm pretty sure that's during Day 4. I skipped through it and finally came to an English section, it's when Rika and Mion are telling Keichii about Rena's name (I'm not sure what day that is). So it seems like part of the translation is missing? Also, I cannot pull up the menu now (neither by right-clicking or by hitting escape). I also tried reviewing the text the minute I loaded it to see what was right before the save and couldn't, but that might just be a normal aspect of the game (not being able to review text prior to a save).

Hi Vonmalvarius, are you using the demo version or the full game version? I know that June 1983 is using the demo - maybe Mion pasted the day5 material onto a Day3 demo release instead of the Day4 release? I only have a copy of the full-game Day5 prerelease version (day4 is translated there), so I can't check the demo myself to confirm that. Mion will take a look when she gets back from work/classes. Hopefully that's the reason for the problem, and it's not something more...sinister :uhoh:
P.S. to June 1983 - that part about Rena's name is the TIPS for day 4. Did you have to click on a button to see it?

Okay, okay...
Unfortunately, as I mentioned before, the savegames from previous patches (Day 3, Day 4) are most likely going to be broken. :( You'll need to start from scratch and rewrite over existing savegaves to make sure you don't keep an old one. The "fix" is so that any future patches won't have this problem.
You can fast-forward through the prologue & earlier days by typing the 'S' key (for skip); this toggles a fast-forward mode. Holding down the CTRL key will do a super-fast-forward. You'll need to click the "continue" button in the TIPS menu after every Day and press 'S' again to restart skip mode.
Or, well... we did do some rewriting in the earlier Days, you might enjoy rereading them... :heh:
Sorry that this is the best I can offer at the moment. :(
EDIT: I removed the Day 3 & 4 downloads from sharing, just to make sure any new readers start with the fixed script. I'll remove the links from previous posts as well.
Mion (Sonozaki Futago-tachi)
P.S. Wow, Shion lives! and posts!
And no, Shion, I did not paste over an old version of the demo - it's all up to date. June 1983 is probably seeing Japanese text because the savegame start point was essentially shifted back from the jump code block (near the end of the script) into one of the later TIPS.

Its weird, but I want to see a picture of Keiichi in all that gear, just so I can laugh my head off more.... The setup is just too evil funny.
I recently received a copy of Higurashi that I bought online from http://www.himeyashop.com/
Apart from a small stuff up (they sent me Umineko no Naku Koro ni part 2 instead of Higurashi Kai Matsuri Bayashi - getting it fixed right now) it was a fairly simple and quick order process. They even support PayPal.
http://www.himeyashop.com/product_info.php/products_id/2237
http://www.himeyashop.com/product_info.php/products_id/4952
They were fairly straight forward, and fairly easy for me to use. Even their support (in the rare situation you need it) was fairly easy to use.
Im thinking I might upload a small guide for people on how to get their systems running Higurashi with the English Patch, both the Demo and the Full Version. Unfortunately, alot of those guides out there seem to contain steps that arnt needed. Plus, Windows loves to do some stuff that just plain confuses or scares when you first see it. Also, some of the steps arnt needed to play the game, just to get it to install correctly.
Hmm. Would there be enough people out there who need Windows 2000 instructions?

Make sure that the patch files are in a subfolder of the demo game. Look for the folder that actually contains these demo game files: nscript.dat, arc.nsa (~50MB), a Japanese .exe, etc.
Now, if the demo files are C:\Program Files\higurashi, you would put the patch files (onscripter-en.exe, etc.) in, say, C:\Program Files\higurashi\English
Hope this helps,

The Omake is not available in the demo version. Technically, you shouldn't be seeing the Omake button at all, but the original game script doesn't seem to leave out the button correctly (it's not there when the program starts, but seems to appear if you come back from the "Continue" menu and such.)

On the topic of using the demo, make sure your computer is extracting it correctly. I do know that the extractor uses Japanese characters in some file names, and it can royally screw those up if you dont do it correctly...
(I think I might hurry up on that guide I mentioned...)
And your right about Omake not being left out correctly. Fairly sure that if you click in its position when its "not there" it will appear and take you to the Omake section... You only get to Exit, but thats still a bit unusual.
On another note, what does the Omake actually contain? I know it has the Chapter Select feature, and when I tried that it did add more features in there (and I think one was a minigame). What exactly are the extras?

When playing the demo, once you've finished the Onikakushi story, you'll have proper access to the Omake menu from that point on.
You'll be able to jump to a particular chapter (from the "Start" button), and the Omake menu has access to a bonus "afterwards" scenario as well as a full TIPS menu.
If you have the full game, once you finish Onikakushi you'll have access to the same Omake as the demo, as well as a minigame. The later stories (Watanagashi, etc.) will give you other bonus scenarios and minigames, and some other stuff which we haven't looked at very much yet. (Hey, those won't be available for a while...)

The minigames are... very silly. A little tricky to play, too. I wouldn't suggest buying the VN just for them, they are very much bonus items.
The first minigame is "Rena*PUN*" (original name "renapan"), where you try to avoid Rena's punches.
The next two are... too darn silly to describe. Seriously. Okay, they are called "Sufi Bomber" and "Devi-Devi Devils". :eyespin:
The final minigame is "Strolling with Rika-chan", where you help little kitten Rika-chan make it safely through Hinamizawa. (Miiiiiii...)
Yes, we are translating the minigames, but we won't be putting enormous loads of effort into it... the creators didn't seem to put a lot of effort into them, either... :heh:

Renapan is probably...the least silly of the minigames. lt's a simulator to learn how to dodge Rena's punches, which is actually 'useful' compared to the setup for the other games.
I took a look at Renapan online, and the way to play is simple but tricky.
If she throws a right punch, click on the right side of the screen (to avoid it).
If she throws a left punch, click on the left side of the screen (same idea).
However, if you avoid it too soon, the punch will still get you - you have to wait until the fist has almost hit, and click at that moment. The timing's the hardest thing to get used to in this game, really.
It's not the same as the game within the novel - there it doesn't matter _where_ you click. You do a left-click for a left punch, and a right-click for a right punch. The timing's just as much of a pain there though. And of course you don't hear Rena talking :). Oh, and there's 3 stages to the game - you have to avoid 100 punches to clear each one! There's dialogue explaining the idea of the game, and more between each stage, which I'm of course translating so players won't be left in the dark. The dialogue banter is fun too, I hope you enjoy it.

http://www.dacyclops.com/higurashi/Sonozaki_Futago-tachi_higurashi_english_onikakushi_day5.exe
Cool, that works pretty well. We're trying to keep our releases in zip format, though, so that non-Windows users can install them. Is there a way to make a generic "install.exe" that takes a setup file which tells what needs to be installed? The full Higurashi game has something like that....
Thanks,

Hi folks,
We'll be doing a translation release of the whole next chapter of Onikakushi (Day 9), but since it's so long that it even comes in two parts in the actual game, we've decided to do a beta test of just the first part.
So then, this is a general shout-out for any and all beta testers! If you would like to help out and have time this week to try out the beta patch, send a PM telling me which Higurashi game you have (full or demo). Your feedback will be greatly appreciated!
Thanks! :)

this particular installer is made by compiling a script file which says what needs to be done. The software is called NSIS and its free. it does compile everything into itself as part of the process (and smaller than a normal zip :D )
I just checked the CD (trust me to have an image of the CD on my Work PC) and I see what you mean. It does appear to define the installer in a text file. Unfortunetly, NSIS cant do that.
I can fully understand wanting to keep it in zip format. I just provided this as an extra option for those who have the full version in Windows. Truth be told, its mostly because it works flawlessly in Vista :D
Just think of this as a bonus for those on Windows. Its since ive already done all the "hard" stuff, its actually going to take me longer to turn on my laptop then to update in the future :D

No, that's cool. I was just looking into Inno Setup, another freeware installer program that seems to do compiled exes as well as an install + script release. Maybe that would work well.

After looking through the Beta of day 9 part 1
Here are a few things
You shouldn't define words in game as it kinda takes away from the story I.E "Miko (Shrine Maiden)" or "Tako (octopus)" etc.. Also most people know what these things are.
Trying to load a game crashes ONscripter
Also it's been awhlie since I last read Onikakushi (in Japanese) and being a K1xMion fan, the amount of RenaxK1 in Onikakushi is making me want to kill somebody...
Though on the other hand I found Tommy to be moe... I think something's wrong with me.

I agree, but we're trying to keep it to a minimum, explaining just enough for words that have slight significance in a scene, and just within the narration. Though, yeah, we might be doing a bit too much of it in this part.
Trying to load a game crashes ONscripter
Hmm, are you trying to load a game that you saved from before the Day 5 release?
Are you using an onscripter-en other than the one that came with the beta patch?

Yeah, Tomi is pretty moe in this part, he looks so vulnerable at first but then happy to have friends.
As for the RenaxK1... well, you could think of the first 3 games as 3 different "paths" in a dating simulation. Onikakushi is the Rena path, Watanagashi is the Mion(?)/Shion(?) path, and Tatarigoroshi is the Satoko path. (Himatsubushi is sort of a Rika path, but with a different protagonist.) Neat, huh?

Oh, so you saved within the TIPS menu after Day 5? My prior savegame fix covered saves at the very first page of a new (untranslated) day, but I'm not sure how I'd do a fix for saving at the TIPS menu. I'll certainly try to figure something out; the release shouldn't punish people for saving when presented with a SAVE * LOAD button! :heh:

just posted my savegame testing to the Sonozaki Futago-tachi sisters, but I think I will say it here for those who want to upgrade before those sisters manage to magic up a fix for it.
Save games made during the TIPS Save/Load screen will crash when loaded in a different version. No matter which save it is (just tried it with on a TIPS save after day 4 as well - same result). If you want to save after that, for now you will have to either save just before, or just after (as in once the VERY first line of text appears) the save screen. (and thats what their last magic fix supported)
also, you shouldnt have too much of a problem loading your game back into Day5 Patch (extra folders are fun!) and loading that save game, just to advance to the first line of text and save again. Thats a nice work around for now, so that your not stuck.

Hi Mion,
Glad to see that your progress is continuing :)
My PC died shortly after your last email so I wasn't able to follow through with continuing with the rest of the game. (Had to buy a new one in fact  ) But I'll be re-downloading the demo and buying the game once I locate the links in this thread. The emails with the links are lost though :(
Kind of hard to find time to search through the thread for them now; I've got too much on my plate at the moment :heh: But I wanted to say "Thanks!" to you and your sis for all the hard work; it's really appreciated

I'm really enjoying your translation and seeing all the extra material that had to be left out of the series. I do have a bit of a question on your translation though - on the second day, when Mion and Rena are explaining about the Watanagashi festival they say "Watanagashi isn't a summer festival; apparently it began as a festival to celebrate the end of winter." I know a lot of countries use a different way of reckoning the seasons, but by the Japanese calender wouldn't Watanagashi fall practically on midsummer?

Well, for most of Japan "summer festival" season is July and August. June is the rainy season, which is technically part of summer but not especially "summery" - seems like Japanese festivals must require the weather to be too darn hot and humid, perhaps so they can sell more snowcones and cold soda. :p
I do agree that mid-late June is a bit late to have an "end of winter" festival; I'd normally consider April or May to be the better month for that. But then, Hinamizawa is a mountain village, so maybe winter ends a little later. Or maybe Watanagashi used to be earlier, but got move to June. Hard to say for sure. :heh:

It still sounds strange to me to think of the end of winter even as April though - by the Irish calender winter's already been over for two weeks. ^^

The end of winter thing can also be a calendar thing. Japan had a lunar calendar, that didn't attach a particular month to a season; then they went luni-solar, and different months had to have the solstice or equinox in the precise middle, but since calendars are always imprecise, the seasons drifted away from their dates (like it happened in Europe, with Easter falling later and later at one point; and in Japan, different places celebrate the Bon festival at a month's interval). If Hinamizawa had the festival in April, it's quite possible it got shifted with no one bothering to put it back to the right month, since by their reckoning it was still the right "time" to have it.

I also got ahold of Atlas and AGTH; still have to install them. Just too much going on at the moment (it's 6:15 AM as I write this LOL). But since Higurashi is in my Top Tier of anime I'll be making an exception and time ;)

But Higurashi is very plot oriented

Thanks, I was going to give it a try because once I start a game (or an anime, for that matter) I like to finish it in as few sittings as possible, not over the course of months (not that I'm complaining at all). I want to keep everything in mind, and I tend to forget details after awhile. And Higurashi is all about the details :p
I much prefer Mion and Shion's translations though :D
Heya DaCyclops,
Heres and afterthought - am I actually being Helpfull by placing it all out in front of you, or more of a problem by making it so easy to find :P
Helping people should never be a problem; that's how Forums used to be before chest-beating elitist-types began enjoying themselves by slamming people for not searching threads, using Wiki, and so on. Now it's kind of an "in-thing" :eyebrow: Haven't seen that behavior so much here, and that's a good thing
Actually, I'm a stickler for going through threads thoroughly myself, but your post here saved me from reading it again as I did in December. It's just been crazy-busy here since then (PC died/configuring & testing new one/website work/Blog work/house probs/bill probs etc etc etc :eyespin:) Just getting caught up now and wanted to see how the Sonozakis were doing :)
So yes, helpful :D If it's a "problem" for people they can just skip to the next post :heh: Thank you!
And again, thanks to Mion and Shion for all the work
(EDIT: Argh, the deed is done: Since Higurashi...Rei was sold out at Paletweb, I ordered all three through Himeya, although Paletweb has better pricing and shipping. I figured I'd want to get Rei from Himeya anyway, and have to deal with their $19 p&h at that time, so bit the bullet. A $90 bullet o.O Now my teeth hurt, but at least I'll have the games. Now I need to find a job LOL!)

Hi Sterling,
I could still cancel I suppose, but I really would like the game boxes for the box art; Higurashi is a big fave and especially since no-one knows whether any more DVDs are coming out (not to mention the status of Kai) I'd like some "hardcopy mementos" ;)
My poor unfilled collector's box is getting very lonely :upset:
I really enjoyed what I played of the demo (thanks to the Sonozaki's translations) so I figure that having the whole game would be cool  Of course, I'll need translations to understand what the heck's going on :heh: While I await the S Sisters superior ongoing work, the Atlas/AGTH solution can be fiddled with in the meantime :D

As always, im a bored person, and I should be doing work :D
Was looking around about Unicode and System Languages and all that stuff, and found a small Microsoft app that might make it much easyer to install and use Higurashi (and other Japanese games).
Microsoft AppLocale
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=17598
It can actually run any program in other Locales without you needing to change your system settings. This would be very usefull, because when you change your system locale it REQUIRES you to restart your computer, even in Vista.
It is a download link that requires a Microsoft Genuine check, but thats not too hard. When you use it, just tell it your running a program (forget about the add/remove - its too much detail) and then choose the installer.exe on the CD (or the Demo installer). Then, when it asks you what Language the program is in, just choose the very last option which should look like this...http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v41/abcyclops/AppLocale-Japanese.jpg
(I honestly want to know what pain at Microsoft thought they didnt need to put the pure English in front of it)
Its fairly quick to use, and makes it alot easyer to install Higurashi (since you dont have to restart a few times)

I've played through Day Nine thanks to the Sonozakis, and am anxiously awaiting more :D Thanks so much for your excellent work, Mion & Shion! (Not to forget their beta-testers ;) )
I really noted the difference when trying to continue the game using Atlas and AGTH :twitch: Man, what a mess those programs produce :heh: They don't even get Mion or Satoko's names right :frustrated: (Well, they did at first, but I guess I changed something; they're pretty confusing to set up right.) I just gave up in frustration. The Sonozaki's translation reads so beautifully that anything else is a letdown :heh:
Anyway, as an impetus of sorts to motivate anyone on the fence about buying the games legitimately to think about it, I decided to go ahead and order all three 07 Expansion games from Himeya-Shop. Pretty spendy, but hell, being a Higurashi junkie I wanted them, and the idea of supporting Ryukishi07 appeals to me :) His hard work and devotion provided me with many hours of enjoyment, so it's only fair.
My tracking number revealed a box that said 2 pounds, and I wondered how large the game boxes might be! Visions of juicy gigantic game boxes danced in my mind's eye. And when it came... the darn thing was almost two feet long! Imagine my disappointment upon opening it and only three jewel cases were inside; not even a game box :upset:
Next to them was a rolled up bunch of what looked like posters. "Hmph," I thought, "they just had to include promo crap, didn't they?" I almost tossed them, but unrolled it... and found:

Looks like they just chucked them in to an apparent Higurashi fan, if you ask me. Nice bonus there!
Thanks :) A friend who I turned onto Higurashi is ordering all three games from Himeya as well, so we'll see if he gets one, too. Hope so! :D
Hi Mion :)
Ahasuerus, you lucky bastard! We didn't get any cool swag like that *sniff* Please take some more photos!
:heh: Yep, I felt so lucky I almost forgot how to act :p Being that I had at least four other orders delayed or out-of-stock in the last week or so, maybe it's some kind of balancing-out. Or Karma: I bought both Schoolmate and Artificial Girl 3 through them (each cost over $100 total) so maybe they looked at my record and tossed in the calendar as a treat?
Perhaps when you guys ordered yours the calandars weren't out yet? At any rate, it's almost an injustice due to your dilligent work on the Higurashi project. It would be cool if you could get in touch with R07 and see if he'd grant permission for a U.S. translated version of the games  I'd pay (again) for that :p Or maybe even just a patch FOR the games, for a reasonable fee?
Oh well, just thinkin' out loud :D
In the meantime, here's two more pics that I'd taken of the calendar; there are two more left to shoot that I'll save for last :D I'll put them up tomorrow. Afterwards I'll try to refine my shooting "technique" *ahem* so that I can put up better quality photos in the appropriate thread, assuming no-one has yet. I only went through the last 6 or 7 pages to check.
Allso, apologies for the angled shots; I don't want to hang it to display the inner pages for shooting because doing so will damage them. Laying it down is the only way, and the damn glare is bothersome. I would've posted them in the "Higurashi pics" thread but compared to what's there my photographic "skillz" suck LOL

Well, I tried searching on the 07thExpansion website for 'English translation' (the Japanese words of course) and found a post Ryukishi07 wrote about people contacting him about an English release. He said he's gotten a lot of such requests, but because his English is too poor, he can't trust making a written contract, so he has to refer them to the Japanese publisher, which ends up being too difficult and expensive so talks break down there. He feels bad about it always going that way, but doesn't know what to do about it as a doujinshi writer.
From what I've heard, making a patch is tolerated, so long as you're not profiting from it. And as good and interesting as the Higurashi stories are, the market in the US for VN's is waaay too small to pay back the licensing fee even if we did have the $$ for it (or could borrow it off you guys ;) ). I'm enjoying the translation as a side hobby to my frustrating full-time job, so if you're okay with the pace we're keeping I'm happy to continue this way as a fan translation. Pics of juicy merchandise help too, so thanks for those

Why does the contract have to be in english?
You are talking about this, right?
Basically it's becuase he cannot oversee the operations since it's oversea. In the event that he has to go through any problems that might lead to legal problems (such as royalities or copyright issues), the trials will be held in that respective country instead of Japan. Of course, signing a contract beforehand can prevent those problems, but he cannot do it himself since his english isn't good enough to understand the contract. Thus his solution is to refer those who wanted to legeally translate his work, to the publishers. Of course, the talk ends there since much money is involved.
Side note: This reminds me of the story of the one-person translation effort that is being done in Taiwan, Chinese translation. The person is quitting after Tatarigoroshi-hen finishes, as he feels discouraged after seeing other people rip off the work that he has put into the project. He recalls going to shops and seeing that Higurashi the PC game was sold on the shelves, with giant words of "chinese version" slapped in the front and was sold for about 8 USD (bootlegs, of course.) At the back cover was the summary that he translated for the game. One can easily guess who translated the content in that disk.
Another story from that same person was that he was contacted by a cellphone company, they wanted to move Higurashi to cellphones (same thing as the PC game, just on cellphone), and offered to pay him about 330 USD for Onikakushi-hen's translation and implementation. That company was actually offered that price by another translator, but they found out that the person would probably just copy-paste his work, so they contacted him instead. Needless to say, he turned it down (those who have played Onikakushi-hen would know how many words there are actually in that one chapter alone...), and never knew if they actually made the game or not.

^ Thanks for that interesting look into the legal/illegal issues involved. Interesting stuff. While I feel bad for R07's business position as a doujinshi, I hope he's aware of how highly regarded he is among our "little" Higurashi fanbase, not to mention the rave reviews of the series by knowledgable reviewers.
I'm enjoying the translation as a side hobby to my frustrating full-time job, so if you're okay with the pace we're keeping I'm happy to continue this way as a fan translation.
And I'm enjoying you and your sister's translations as I'm sure that most reading this thread are as well. Whatever pace you can manage is fine with me as long as you're able to keep one :)
Don't work too hard ;)
Is there a hope for me who discovers now about this marvellous project to download the translation?

The patch is still up for download. Let me see...
The Sonozaki Futago-tachi English patch for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Onikakushi (Days 1-5,9) is now ready! Check out our RapidShare folder at http://rapidshare.com/users/MQK6IW.
You may download the translation patch for the full version of the game (aka Himatsubushi-hen) at http://rapidshare.com/files/94455305/_Sonozaki_Futago-tachi__Higurashi_-_Onikakushi_Day9.zip
Here's the translation patch for the demo version of Higurashi: http://rapidshare.com/files/94455799/_Sonozaki_Futago-tachi__Higurashi_Demo_-_Onikakushi_Day9.zip
On Windows, you'll need to have Japanese language support enabled to install Higurashi. The easiest way to do this is by using Microsoft AppLocale: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=17598
If you use Mac OS X or Linux, you can download the latest version of onscripter-en from the Onscripter-En website: http://dev.haeleth.net/onscripter.shtml. Mac users should be able to drop the onscripter-en.app file from the dmg image into the translation patch subdirectory, and double-click to play.
-----
There's a new savegame fix (to end all fixes?) in this release, so don't be surprised if some of your older save games crash or load into a different place than where you saved; just resave at the appropriate point in this release. From now on, there shouldn't be problems with loading savegames you make using this release and any later ones.
Please let us know what you think!
Also let me know if you have problems installing or running a patch.
Mion (Sonozaki Futagotachi)
And of course, because I love wasting time... (not really. the longest parts of making this was extracting the files over my network, and adding in a link to the Controls Guide)
http://www.dacyclops.com/higurashi/Sonozaki_Futago-tachi_higurashi_english_onikakushi_day9.exe
Only for use by the Full-version users. Installs to the right folder, and also over the Day5 one that I made. Enjoy!
EDIT: As a note, if you were refering to the "Minagoroshi / Matsuribayashi Translation Project" from the title, that has been dead a long time. This thread is currently used for the Sonozaki Futagotachi sisters patches, which start at the first chapter of the game. Maybe these should be split into their own topic, in case of confusion....

Hm, bummer :( Maybe it has to be Higurashi product in order to get the Higurashi calendar? And all three CDs I'll bet. I wish they would communicate in English so I could (a) express thanks and (b) ask about what's needed to get the calendar. I guess it's a secret, anyway ;)
I've only checked out a little of the Umineko thread... I'm very interested but don't want to get spoiled. Also, the lack of a translation kept me from investigating further. Using Atlas and AGTH sucks, especially when compared to the Sonozakis work. But the story seemed really cool
Is there an estimation of how many CDs there's going to be for Umineko?

Gha! Topic Split! Now I have to learn a whole new topic number, and get that into my most-frequently-visited address list (wont take long, im sure :D )
What? Another person got the calendar? Either I ordered too early, I ordered too little (didnt get Rei) or im just unlucky (because I actually got sent the wrong thing originally, too. Got Umineko part 2 instead of Higurashi Kai. Unlucky would just fit).
Screw it, im ordering Rei now and seeing if im lucky.
My poor credit card.

Judging from how we ordered, and if this is how they measured their criteria, we both ordered all three of the 07thExpansion CDs for Higurashi at the same time. That's all I have to go on, sorry :(

Im putting my trust into luck.
New Rule - Im going to receive the package, however big, and just never open it. Because until I open it, I can believe that package both does and doesnt contain a bonus calendar. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_cat)
Ahasuerus
2008-03-27, 06:37
Hm... interesting. I've seen "Schrodinger's cat" mentioned in at least three anime: Kanon for sure, possibly Gilgamesh or Ergo Proxy, and I *think* Higurashi (or it may have been in one of Klashikari's analyses).
It's also mentioned in Hellsing and Yu-Gi-Oh! as mentioned here (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Schr%C3%B6dinger%27s_cat_in_popular_culture). (Haven't seen those.) A great many references to it seem to be of Japanese origin for some reason
Actually, you can tell from the size of the box: If it's two feet long, it'll have the calendar rolled up in it. If it's CD-sized, well... the cat is dead :heh:
theacefrehley
2008-03-27, 06:58
As for these bonus stuff
The first time I bought from Himeya, I received an "anime girl doll" I had not ordered (I think it's made from plaster or something like that)
Maybe it's just for people buying for the first time because I never received any bonus on the subsequent orders :(:(
Ahasuerus
2008-03-27, 07:14
I dunno... at first I thought it might have been because I bought both "School Mate" and "Artificial Girl 3" games through them @ $100 each, so I thought it was like a "thank you" for all the $$$ I've sent their way. (I've torrented enough Illusion games in the past and felt it was time to pay them for their hard work.)
But then my friend bought his 3 Higurashi CDs getting the calendar as well, and I think it was the first time he'd bought through them, so I *think* it must be if you order all three official Higurashi CDs at once. That seems to be the common denominator :)
I just wanted to say thank you for this continual effort of bring Higurashi goodness to us unfortunate english-only speakers. It really is amazing and I hope you get to the other arcs as well.
I've been slowly reading through the patch (been putting it off for awhile) and I thought I'd just post up what might be a spelling error in the first day:
http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/6271/41046403cf4.jpg
I'm not sure if you meant 'had' or not, but wouldn't 'have' be better?
EDIT: Sorry about the page stretch >___>
Sonozaki Futagotachi
2008-04-03, 21:43
We used "had" since Keiichi's "thoughts" are almost entirely in past tense, a bit like a daily diary, with the exception of very "present-tense" realizations, reactions and such (like "What's that noise?")
Mion (Sonozaki Futagotachi)
Sterling01
2008-04-03, 22:22
There's also a reason why his thoughts are in past tense
Unlike Umineko where they're always in present tense
Okay, yeah because at first I thought it was a mistake, but then after reading it again I thought it might have been intentional.
I also love how there are little clues in this arc for the next ones, that you definitely wouldn't catch unless you replayed them (or watched the anime :P) such as "it must be scary to marry into the Sonozaki family".
I installed both the demo and the full version to see if either would work for me, I unzipped the onscripter, and then tried to open it in the sub category, but when I open it, it closes on me right away. Do you think there is a way to solve this, or did I do something wrong?
Klashikari
2008-04-04, 07:08
How is the directory of your patch folder?
If there is several sub directory, it might be a problem for the onscripter
at worst, just copy the 2 directory line for both game main folder and the patch.
By the way, I noticed at the first day, when Keiichi explain about Rena Kai mode, there is this line:
"If a little girl were ever kidnapped here in hinamizawa, ..."
Shouldn't it be "was" instead ?
As for the little discussion about possible bonus in their order, despite I ordered all naku koro ni game (5) at once, at himeya shop, I received naught...
kinda disappointed, but the factor might be simple: out of stock? Gahhh >_> (received my order around mid march so)

And yes, I never saw this calendar in their page, so I was really surprised by it. It woudn't be far fetched to think that surprise was quite limited both in time and stock.
As for "were" and "was", i can't say I can affirm that since i'm not an english native, but since the sentence seems to be simple past in singular, it looks like "was" should be used here, but I guess I missed a point XD

It's actually an odd case where both "were" and "was" would be technically correct, so your English is fine. ^^

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei (Gratitude)
This is somewhat the fandisk release the very next comicket after Matsuribayashi-hen. This has 2 spin off arcs and Saikoroshi-hen, the later being the "epilogue" of the series.
You can find this at Himeyashop [link] (http://www.himeyashop.com/product_info.php/products_id/5824)
It is unavailable on paletweb for ages, and it seems they don't even bother to restock these.
EDIT: how surprising, they finally got Rei available on paletweb: [link] (http://www.paletweb.com/selectpage.asp?code=00954)
Ironically, they still didn't relink himatsubushi in their search tools, so one might think they don't have it anymore...
Meanwhile, Matsuribayashi is out of stock, just like Daybreak and Daybreak kai huh...

It's subjunctive tense, for a hypothetical statement, same as the song title "If I Were a Rich Man".
Keiichi doesn't yet know how very non-hypothetical it could be :D
For what it's worth, many people use 'was' in this type of situation, but 'were' is grammatically correct.

I know what you mean by lack of comments from my own (only-partially-anime)blog (though to be honest I haven't worked hard at spreading the word :p ). I rarely comment anywhere; I like to stay in the shadows :heh:
But really, yours was SUCH a great help... I mean, all that work and thought you put into your analyses, the careful screening of spoilers (MUST have been a pain in the ass), and extreme attention to detail... Without sounding too fanboi-ish, your Higurashi blogness for both seasons was like a companion to me during those lonely days of desperately trying to assemble the pieces when my head was in constant turmoil and confusion
Of course, looking forward to Season 3 and your summaries, synopses and interpretations :D
Okay, wow. I'm just starting the 4th Day (Day 9?) and I have to say, this sound novel has completely blown me away. Based on what I have already seen (The various clubs activities, all the different character's personalities, their interaction etc.) and by thinking about some of the very emotional events that I know about from watching the anime, I can now understand why the sound novels actually are 100000x better then the anime. There have already been times this game has actually made me smile and/or laugh out loud, when I'm just sitting here on my own.
That being said, I'm very, very excited for more chapters to be released. I almost don't want to finish reading what is already translated, because I know the wait will be unbearable. So Sonozaki, I would would love it if there was anything I could do to help you with this translation and/or patch to speed up the process (though I know no Japanese at all). Just let me know, okay? ^^
Yes youre right I also think the Audio novels are better than the anime, but youre wrong the novels arent 100000x better than the anime, the novels are 100001x better :heh:.
Just joking a little, I also am hoping for the next day of the onikakushi, I think Sonozaki Futagotachi had made a really good job with this, and Im hoping for them to continue with the translation untill the very end :)

You only really needed to change the regional settings to do the game installation; you should be able to play the game using your normal settings. So go ahead and change the regional settings back to Italian, but keep the Japanese fonts.
If you run into similar problems again, you can try using AppLocale (http://www.microsoft.com/globaldev/tools/apploc.mspx) instead; that way it won't change your entire system settings.

As was mentioned, without the Japanese fonts the game finds itself unable to write the files, as it cant find the characters for the filenames. Installing the Japanese fonts and using Applocale to install it would make it work fine. You dont need to change your region (or use Applocale) to run the game - just have the fonts installed.
You can also actually remove the Microsoft IME (Input Method Editor) that it installs for the Japanese language. If you are only using it long enough to install, you dont actually need it. Go into the Regional and Language Options, goto the Languages tab, click on Details, and then click on and remove the un-needed options under "Installed services".
Also, here is the post I made on how to use Applocale.
I installed both the demo and the full version to see if either would work for me, I unzipped the onscripter, and then tried to open it in the sub category, but when I open it, it closes on me right away. Do you think there is a way to solve this, or did I do something wrong?
I'm having this problem as well.
How is the directory of your patch folder?
If there is several sub directory, it might be a problem for the onscripter
at worst, just copy the 2 directory line for both game main folder and the patch.
Not really understanding what your saying:eyespin:
The game runs perfect in Japanese but I extract the patch into the game folder & when I try open this shows up for a split second:
http://img139.imageshack.us/img139/7427/84930267jj7.jpg
Then closes:upset:
Thanks for any help & thanks for the patch Sonozaki!! :D

Re: Levon
Uh oh, if you unzip the patch straight into the game folder, then that overwrites some important game files. You'll need to reinstall the game.
Once you've done that, make a subfolder in the Higurashi game folder (call it 'English') and unzip the patch straight into the 'English' folder. If you find that the patch files end up in a subfolder of 'English', then move the files from that subfolder directly into the 'English' folder.
Now run 'English\onscripter-en.exe' and it should play! :D
Of course, let us know if you still have problems.

^ So far the Sonozaki Futagotachi have translated the days 1-5 as well as day 9 (there are no day 6, 7, or 8) of Onikakushi. There are 15 days in Onikakushi.
What you need to know is that there are three games in the Higurashi series. The first one is simply called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, the second one is called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai, and the third one, which is more or less a fandisk, is called Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei. The first game has four arcs in it, and the first one of these four arcs is called Onikakushi-hen. Then come Watanagashi-hen, Tatarigoroshi-hen, and Himatsubushi-hen. The second game has four arcs as well, and the third one has three side stories.
And I completely agree, the Sonozaki Futagotachi are doing an excellent job :)
Too bad I can't play the rest of what they translated so far (I didn't get a chance to play day 4, day 5, and day 9 unfortunately, because I'm waiting for my new computer, which will have XP. Yeah, I still have 98 . And I can't play on my dad's computer anymore since I messed up his mail box by setting his computer to japanese the last time I played, for an unknown reason :heh:). I'll try that later, thanks.

Well, apparently there was a translation patch (at least the beginning of a translation patch) for Minagoroshi-hen - which is the third arc of the second game - somewhere since it's a pretty important arc, but for some unknown reasons the links to the patch all lead to an error 404. Unfortunately I don't really know what happened, or if you can still even get the patch.
Otherwise, nothing else has been translated. Although I think some parts of Matsuribayashi-hen, the last arc of Kai, have been translated, I'm pretty sure the same thing happened.
tobiast88
2008-04-08, 17:09
Minagoroshi-hen was started on, then abandoned because a lot of its project's staff went AWOL. Matsuribayashi is only translated in the Kakera, "pieces" after a substantial part of the game that you read and put in proper order, and this was done so that people who only had the first anime season to go on could get closure.
However, Umineko is being translated right now. Go look for Baka-tsuki.

Thanks, I hope you get to read more soon :). Just download the most recent patch and it'll have all the prior days too.
To add a bit to Bernkastel's answer, the demo contains the entire first arc of HIgurashi no Naku koro ni, called "Onikakushi", so if you like you can wait to purchase the first game CD until after that arc is finished.
We fully intend to keep translating the games, even through Kai and Rei if possible, since we want to read it ourselves. We've both been occupied with other things in our lives lately (like our paying jobs :heh:), but kept at this too just at a slower pace. The pace should be picking up a bit soon, and our next release will have Day 10 & 11, so there'll be plenty of new material to read.
Thanks for the encouragement, it certainly helps to cheer us up for the work of translating and adapting the obsessive thoughts of a paranoid delusional (or is he...:twitch:).

This is a somewhat known problem with onscripter and Vista, and used to be a problem with multicore processors. The internal mpeg decoding library freezes the program after starting/stopping music playback a certain number of times.
The good news is: we'll be having a new Onikakushi patch release shortly (like in a week or so) which will have a more recent build of onscripter that uses newer libraries. Based on tests so far, it's eliminated the Vista freeze problem :)
It seems like a new set of official onscripter builds should be available soon as well, and if they come out before our patch does, we'll be sure to include the official binary.
In the meantime, I wonder if running the program in "XP Compatibility Mode" would help, though I can't be sure since I don't have Vista myself. If not, then saving more frequently and restarting from the most recent save should at least get you past each freeze point. :heh:
Take care,

I've been playing the game on my XP machine and I love it! Your translation is awesome and very nicely done. I really liked the events of the recently translated days and am anxiously looking forward to more.
I noticed you have an onscripter file for Mac OS X, and since I have a Macbook Pro, I thought I'd like to get the game on my laptop as well. I have all of the translation files and the .dmg onscripter file from Sonozaki Futagotachi, but I can only find the demo as an .exe file, which I don't think will run on here. Granted, I'm still learning how this OS works, so I may be missing something painfully obvious. :heh:
Is anyone running the game on OS X, and if so, what do I need to do? Or is the demo Windows-exclusive and I have to buy the game to play it on my Mac? Or am I just completely out of luck here?
Thank you for any help with this, and again, thank you to Sonozaki Futagotachi for this wonderful translation! :D

Ah, I think I see what you're saying. So, I should be able to take the extracted folder from my Windows machine, put it on my thumb-drive, copy it onto my Macbook, then just put the .dmg onscripter with the translation files and enjoy...right? :p
I have the folder with the actual program and the translation files on my Windows desktop...Since I'm not at my Windows machine at the moment to check this myself, are there any other files saved to, say, Program Files that I'd need to copy over as well or just that folder on my desktop?

Everything for the Higurashi demo is in that one folder, so that's all you need to copy. Oh, be sure you get the hidden WAV subfolder that's in there too, or else you won't have any sounds!

I've got a mac, and everything works.
What you gotta do is make a folder with all the files, slap the ONScripter in the middle of it all and run it. It should work if you have all the files lined up correctly.
Okay, something's not working right...someone let me know if I missed something.
I took the extracted folder on my Windows machine that contained the original demo files and the English folder with the translation files (and the hidden WAV folder is in there too) and copied it onto my Macbook. It's currently sitting on my desktop. After getting past the authentication problems whenever I tried to put the Onscripter DMG file in there (I ended up making a new folder and copying the files to get around that), I put the DMG file into the English folder. I open it, then run the Onscripter program in the "dist" folder that appears. Then I get the error "No game data found. This application must be run from a directory containing the ONScripter game data." As I said before, I'm still new to OS X and am sure I'm flubbing up something that would be easy if I was more used to this thing. ;)
What on earth am I doing wrong? I apologize for being such a bother and appreciate all the help so far!
Sonozaki Futagotachi
2008-04-24, 21:20
Okay, you have to have a copy of the ONScripter-En.app program right in the same folder as the patch. Just drag the ONScripter-En.app file (in the 'dist' folder that you saw) to the 'English' folder, so it's copied there. It should work if you double-click that file now, but let me know if this doesn't resolve the problem. Good luck and enjoy!
Shion (Sonozaki Futago-tachi)
Awesome, that did it! I think I've confused DMG files and APP files in the past...
Thank you so much for your help, and I am very much looking forward to the next release!

But now I am installing the full game (I had the demo before) as I type and then I will download the patch and replay ... wow, up to Day 12! Good job!

Hi, Shion here. I was wondering if there were any native Japanese speakers on this board who might have time to help us out with some undocumented idioms and cultural references that we've had trouble finding information about, as well as maybe cross-checking some bits. Just to help us get Onikakushi finished up to be the best it can be. Oh, and it'd be a bonus if you know about mahjongg, since some talk about that comes up during Detective Ooishi's break-time, and I'm _really_ not an expert :heh:. Please PM us if you would be willing to help us out. Yoroshiku onegai itashimasu!

Me and a friend were contributing to the Minagoroshi project just before its demise and came across mah-jong problems too. I can only tell you good luck, coz I'm not going there again. ^^;
