Cast is great. The trailer was pretty good as well. The backgrounds are really nice the music is great too. I like the art from Studio Deen, but I wish that it was more like the manga. Another 1 of the spring anime I'm going to follow.

The trailer was good, especially the music. Odd that they didn't show Kon since he's one of the three major Characters in the manga.

He was shown in the trailer (but in it he's blonde thought XD)

I'm going for this because of Paku Romi voicing the tough swords lady, plus they do not seem to restrict the bloody scenes too.
Maybe this series will be a surprise, but we will see

Hmm, I've had my eye on this. Liked the promo vid. Although I'm not a big fan of the blood, but that's just me.
I'm guessing not, but I gotta ask, is there any love-interests in this series? :D
Jun Fukuyama and Paku Romi as the leads... guess I'm sold!
Ah, finally a thread. Thanks for opening it!
I must say the trailer has surprised me, in a good way. I somewhat expected the series to receive the same treatment as Hatenkou Yuugi (pretty manga, visually disappointing adaptation) - replacing the series in the same timeslot, I thought it'd get the same sponsors (since Bus Gamer has the same ones too), which would make sense anyway as one of them was Ichijinsha (the publisher of Comic-Zero Sum in which are published Hatenkou Yuugi and Amatsuki).
Yet the budget seems totally different. And satisfying animation usually does not go well with the name of Studio DEEN :eyebrow: It was nowhere near mindblowing, but it did have interesting elements that seem to imply the action scenes won't be made of stills only, what the people at DEEN seem to love so much...
I was really afraid to see another failure, especially since the direction is working on Real Drive at the same time and I thought RD might have been more 'important' than this - but the trailer has relieved some of my worries. Of course it may just be the best-looking stuff...
Yeah I watched the trailer about 30 minutes after last posting in this thread. Seems like this is "the" Deen title of the season since it looks a lot better than Vampire Knight. Jun Fukuyama seems to be making it a habit in voicing characters who have had something done to one eye and Paku Romi seems to be voicing another bad ass female swordsman, awesome.

I'm actually reasonably surprised with this show. When I first glanced over this thread I was under the impression it was going to be fairly crappy, but now I'm not so sure. Hum.
Yeah I have to admit I wasn't expecting much but the trailer surprised me, it can of course still turn out to be crap but with zero hype for it atm it has a good chance of being one of the sleeper hits of the season. i like the song used in the trailer, I'm hoping that's the intro.

Wow, I've been reading the manga for this, and didn't notice that they're making an anime. The plot is pretty interesting (IMO) with the main character's eye. Though, I felt like an idiot once when I read it. At first, I thought Kuchiha was a man, been seeing too many bishounen I think...
Based on my previous experiences, I've learned not to judge an anime based on popularity, hype, or the trailers/previews. Trailers/previews are a marketing ploy to get you interested in watching the show, so it can make a crappy show look great. Or if not done correctly it can also make a great show look crappy (sometimes the trailer is so vague, as to avoid spoilers, it ruins the concept of marketing the show). I've had those experiences of watching a trailer or reading a synopsis and thinking it was a dull and uninteresting a show only to be proven wrong once I browsed the blogs or forums...and then watching for myself. I want to reserve judgment until I've watched a few episodes, but naturally I'm not immune to a good-looking trailer and so I did get a lot more interested once I'd seen it. I mean I've got 18 animes (out of some 30-odd new entries) that interest me this season, but what turns out good remains to be seen.
I'd heard of the manga and it's been on my "to read" list, so I wasn't unfamiliar with the story though. The voice cast is also great and even if Studio DEEN isn't known for it's works of genius, I like their art and they may just create a gem this Spring season. I agree with Westlo, I hope the music used in the trailer is their OP, I thought it was great.

A guy in a mediaeval parallel world with fantasy beasts and swordsmen? What is this, reverse Twelve Kingdoms?
While I am not terribly impressed by the style, it is Kazuhiro Furuhashi and it has got to have redeeming qualities. I will be checking it out, if only to see if I am wrong to suspect that this is a waste of time.
Because, it does feel like a typical waste of time adventure, yet it's by Furuhashi. DOES... NOT... COMPUTE...

I watched the trailer.
It doesn't look too shabby! :D
I'll be looking forward to this one, since the animations seem really good.
It has alot of pretty in it though the description doesn't seem to do it any justice. Hopefully it keeps a solid plot with all the pretty.

Yeah sorry that description was rather vague.
I found this summary of the manga on ANN (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/manga.php?id=8883):
Rikugou Tokidoki, a common Japanese high school student, has failed his last history test. So to make up for it he has to study at a museum that uses state of the art virtual technology to place you right in the middle of the Edo period. However, when he runs into a being called a nue, a masked man riding an enormous monster, he loses the sight in his right eye. After realizing that he is no longer wearing his goggles, he discovers that he is trapped in the Edo period, where he meets Shinonome Kon, another person in a similiar position as him, and Kuchiha a female samurai who saved his life.
Am I the only one here who's read(ing) the manga? ;_; It's not a reverse Twelve Kingdoms, but I'm not sure what it is. The plot's complexity is difficult to keep up with for many people. A lot of intrigue, and mystery...
The trailer disappointed me a bit, though.
The school scene is some sort of filler. I guess it does make sense that they want to provide some filler featuring Toki's school life, because at the start of the manga, he's already in the history museum.
Everything else in the trailer happens in the very first chapter.
It seems like Studio DEEN is slowing down the pace a lot here. The pacing is very fast in the manga, but that's what's great. The manga doesn't "slow down" to provide emphasis on characterization, plot development, or action. It does each of those things well, without having to slow down. Well, we'll see soon.
I was going to download the manga and read it all last night.... but I decided not to. Nearly every manga to anime adaption starting this season which has been scanlated I've read... so I decided to ignore it for this and go in fresh.
That's probably a good idea.... I loved the manga's pacing and hope the anime's is comparably excellent... But realistically, I suppose it doesn't even matter, since whatever style of presentation they choose, the content is what makes the anime what it is. Ah, but I love the characters and hope the voice actors and animation style do them justice. =)

mostly i think thats a good idea..
i usually at most read the first 1-2 volumes of a manga in a case like this just to get a general idea of what kinda anime it's gonna be..
but in general i think its a lot better to leave the manga for after the anime that way you use your time to watch and enjoy the series for what it is instead of compering the manga and the anime all the time and thinking "this wasn't like that in the manga! this too! what's going on?!?!"
and in the case the anime really is a 1:1 of the manga its worse as you already know everything thats gonna happen (and how it will happen)..

Amatsuki is one of my favorite recent manga, so I'm really looking forward to the anime adaptation. It initially seems like another standard fantasy-adventure, but I've enjoyed the folklore and sci-fi elements. The manga is tightly plotted like a detective story and there's a lot of moral ambiguity in the characters. Well, I hope the anime doesn't screw it up. :heh: The only thing I'm really disappointed in so far are the clothing designs... UGH! Too bland.
Well the first episode is slated for today, wonder which sub group will pick it up and how long it'll take them to post it.

Honestly wasn't overly impressed, but I'm not familiar with the source material either. Just seemed very very slow and they went out of their way to describe every single thing. Decently animated and the foreground art was all crisp and consistent, but the BG artwork was boring as sin, so during all the long expositions my attention tended to pretty quickly drift. *shrug*

(Watched the raw.) Yep, it was very slow. There was much less conversation in the manga, although there was still an above-average amount in the manga.
And not only were things added, some were removed. There were no real plot changes in the anime, but the narrative definitely had a different tone because of it... I won't say any details because there's no need to (the anime should be enjoyed for what it is) but I have no idea why Studio DEEN removed the things they did, unless they wanted to save all their frames for Vampire Knight. This episode would've had more charm if those things weren't removed. :(
By the way, the song from the trailer was the ED song.
Edit: It was bothering me for a while... I just remembered who Kuchiha's voice reminds me of. The tsundere mermaid examiner in Seto no Hanayome, Shiranui. Similar role, and I feel like it's probably the same voice actor... not sure at all, though.
By the way, the song from the trailer was the ED song.
Nice, I'm glad it didn't end up nowhere like the songs used in the trailers for the first FMP and Kiddy Grade.

Kuchiha is Romi Paku and Shiranui was Eri Kitamura.
Hmm, lots of people are saying it was dull, but I can't write-off an entire show cause the beginning was slow, I've watched a few shows that started slowly and ended brilliantly. Those who've read the manga have been saying to give this show a chance, cause it starts slow only to build into an incredibly fast-paced and exciting story. I think first impressions are just that, only impressions.

I agree with you completely. First impressions should not be the sole basis of our judgment whether a show is good or not. It's disappointing to here there are people ready to give up on the series because of the first episode being slow-paced. Amatsuki is worth more than.
Well, in my opinion (after watching it), I can say that there is enough interesting stuff in Amatsuki to keep on watching. I do not understand why people expect great stuff from an episode. I feel that there are enough interesting points in the series to get excited about. It might not be crazy action, but the action scenes are decent and there seems to be a good background for this.
That said, we made a summary + screenshots for the first episode (http://that.animeblogger.net/2008/04/06/amatsuki-episode-1-this-rainy-evenings-moon/). ^^

ep 1
Boring? bland? slow moving? How could you O.o
I actually like this first episode quite a bit. It has a certain charm that kept my attention all the way even with the long explanations some of which I was able to pick up (thankgod ^^). The characters are attractive and hold interesting personalities, abit cliched seen as I can just see that this is the start of their "party"but still good imo. The sudden change from reality to the fantasy world was sudden, but in a good way ~ now that is what I call being caught off guard.
This is a good first impression out of all the new series I've seen so far, so I hope they keep at it ^^ And what's more, this gave me some great fushigi yuugi vibes for some reason :3
12 Kingdoms didn't exactly meet with rave reviews when it started airing (IIRC it wasn't until the King of En episodes when people started to talk it up, so much bitching about Yoko and her friend at first...), I'm not saying this will be as good as 12 Kingdoms but I expect a similar amount of improvement. (hopefully)
I liked it. I really don't care about the slow pace so long as there is some characterization (which there is) and set up. Too bad it's another 13 episode only series. *sighs* Suppose with the manga incomplete it's inevitable.
They should easily have enough material for two seasons, but perhaps they thought it'd work better to wrap up with that amount of material. If it's going to be that short, though, it concerns me that they Gonzo will be tempted to create a filler ending to provide better closure... Then again, this is just the first episode, so it'd difficult to speculate exactly how the series will flow.
It isn't by Gonzo, it's studio DEEN.
Who said it was going to be only 13 episodes?
just watched it, song not bad, the story look not bad too, will follow for sure.

I'm guessing that the anime will cover up to the end of the 4th volume because that's a nice, fairly self-contained arc that includes all of the characters shown in the OP. But that will leave a lot of plot holes and unanswered questions...

I'm not too sure on this series now after this ep. Ep 1 felt like it had more of a direction compared to this one. This may also do to the fact that it was hard to understand what was going on with the place. I seriously need the subs for this one.

The show's alright, reminds me a lot of shounen omyouji.
The part that suprised me was when the girl was being bullied by those sumarai, i thought the guy's definitely going to bring out some special power , but instead the girl did xD.. Not too much action so far...

[spoiler="Thoughts on the trailer--very minor spoilers"]The school scene is some sort of filler. I guess it does make sense that they want to provide some filler featuring Toki's school life, because at the start of the manga, he's already in the history museum.
I wouldn't say school life scenes are filler, at least they aren't in the manga. Real life events are getting very important later on. And I think anime shows the real life events earlier just to flesh out the plot flow better. And there is a lot more between Tokidoki and Chitose than we are told. It is very possible Tokidoki's way of life has affected Chitose's action. And I think Tokidoki's behavior in real life is to be a contrast of his changes in the gameworld.
Though, I kinda can't stand the art right now... maybe it is because the mange is too pretty, the anime art style just didn't live up to my expectation. Although the VA cast is really nice.
It seems like this one isn't getting that much attention, I thought it looked good.

The anime art really awful. :heh: Maybe Amatsuki is a little too dialogue-heavy to make an easy transition to anime (but it gives the voice cast a chance to shine. I can't wait for Suwabe as Bonten!)
I doubt Chitose is even going to show up unless there's a second season. I'm afraid they're going to cut out the real world portion of the story and make it a more straightforward fantasy adventure. But Toki's vague and spaced out character seems like a weakness in the otherwise solid writing until the manga starts hinting at real-life events that made him the way he is... well, I guess there's a limit to how much they can fit in 13 episodes.
My eyes were practically popping at the exquisite piece of sexy blond manflesh I see in the OP... and you say the anime art is awful?! :twitch: :twitch:
My eyes were practically popping at the exquisite piece of sexy blond manflesh I see in the OP... and you say the anime art is awful?! :twitch: :twitch:
Yeah I don't get that people would think it's awful. Granted I've never seen the manga art aside from the covers and they are indeed very nicely drawn but that doesn't mean the animation is bad IMO. It may not be as good, but not bad. I personally think that is usually the case in manga vs anime. Example, I think the art in S.A. and Vampire Knight manga are better than their anime counterparts, but I certainly don't think it's bad.

It's already decided that I'll watch it, I just want to know what to expect.
Something about the protagonist being taken to another workld or something correct?
Ehh.
Finally the subs are out XD Can't wait to see it!
This doesn't seem top be getting much attention but I actually though that, as far as first episodes go, it was pretty decent. Not an awful lot happens and there's no overtly sexualised content so that could account for it.....but it was a pleasant set up with plenty of future potential.

Pretty solid first episode. Those two guys really got into a tough situation here. One having to get by for 2 years, and losing the ability to use one arm is pretty rough. Though Toki also got a bad loss losing sight in one eye. Going to be a troublesome blindspot when things get rough.
Wonder what is up with the yakou and the philosophical questions.
Well should be a fine series to follow.
the answer is allusion btw, thats what i think anyway XD
and I'd say losing an arm in edo period japan is worst then losing an eye..
sure 3d perception is important, but having the power to fully use a katana is more important .
moreover i think that eye isn't "dead" i think he may actually get some special power from that..
seeing as he saw a youkai with that eye that wasn't even near him

seeing as he saw a youkai with that eye that wasn't even near himWould definitely agree the one arm being mostly useless is a pretty serious loss. Would have to pick up the skill of using a sword with just one arm. Definitely a handicap, no expert on sword skills so no clue how well he'd be able to deal with it.
Guess you would take having not quite the same wideness of vision in exchange for two capable arms.
generally speaking the problem with having just one functioning eye is not really your field of vision as the loss is around 30% or so..
the reall issue (specially with martial arts, and even more so with swordsmanship) is that it destrois your depth of vision.
and not being able to tell where objects in 3d space are is an issue(not knowing how close is the enemy blade to you is not ideal :p)
but and thats a big but for it to actually matter is mostly with experts.. in an expert fight having one eye is a pretty big disadvantage, tho its a disadvantage you can make up for with other skills, but for a novice having just one hand is a real issue.
when too not-so-skilled people are fighting the most likely scenario is that the more physically capable person will win.
moreover with one eye you can learn sword techniques normally just with the disadvantage of eyesight during the actual battle.
using a sword with one arm will require you to invent more techniques as most of them are based on using two hands(not that there aren't any for one hand, but when talking about a katana its mostly based on two hands and while there are some for one they are more for specific scenarios and not for general fighting..)

Ah jeez I love anime sometimes...As for the first episode it was a nicer intro and the only thing that really irked me was the robot voice on the smaller one. Somehow found myself wishing it sounded more insidious or creepy not so much like a literal computer...meh.
Highlight was Romi's Kuchiha...The combination of the voice, the sword, and the hair. ;)
I loved it! It may not be riddled with action, but it was very engaging and I found it really intriguing. I'm sure this will be the type of show to built up its plot and flesh out its characters. I, for one, cannot wait for the next episode! Thanks a million Ureshii :kisskiss:
I liked it as well. The virtual reality museum was nicely done. I don't know if there are any museum / attractions that can do what that museum did. If not, I expect it's a reasonable progression of how attractions are evolving. Taki's blind eye surprised me. I expected it to be without a pupil since that's how blindness is normally depicted in anime. I didn't expect it to look exactly like his other eye with a color change. The lecture on what it means to tie a kimono backwards, how that's reserved for corpses, has got to be a foreshadowing of something ominous. Lady Longhair's outfit was certainly revealing for its time. (Sorry, I'm bad at remembering character names.) I think she misunderstood what Taki was saying about how his life has always been like a dream. His words left me feeling sorry for him because he hasn't been a part of the world around him. The blond turned black-hair may have learned courtesy during his 2-year stay in that world. But clearly that's just a surface veneer. I expect him to get into more pointless fights as the series progresses. :heh:

I love history and if we ever progress to having such museums, you bet I'd be there! It certainly would make history more appealing to those who might find it boring.
Lady Longhair's outfit was certainly revealing for its time. (Sorry, I'm bad at remembering character names.)
Kuchiha. Although I'm also bad at remembering, especially if there's a big cast introduced fairly quickly & then I'm lost until I've watched a fair bit of episodes.
I think she misunderstood what Taki was saying about how his life has always been like a dream. His words left me feeling sorry for him because he hasn't been a part of the world around him.
I think so too. I also feel badly that he felt so isolated and removed from everything around him, but I'm sure that will be a key point in his development as a character; becoming more involved with the world around himself (an active participant) rather than as a voyeur looking at life pass by. The VR Edo world will become more real to him than the real world maybe?
P.S. Love the ED!!! I can't stop playing it. The full album version will be released only on June 18th...so until then...the ED is on repeat! :D
This is a rather interesting series, kind of mysterious. It's a reincarnation of Teresa from Claymore, pretty hot....
Only 13? Ha.... I guess they are going to use original plot than....
+2 on the interest level with the story and things of that nature, thought it was slow at the very beginning but picked up after Toki was attacked.
+6.5 solely on the basis that a super bad ass chick comes out of no where(Kuchiha) and cuts off the nue's tongue, then proceeds to slice the beast right down the middle(*PRESSES THE BLOOD CODE FOR THE SCENE* A,B,A,C,A,B,B) and then wraps her hair around her shoulder(I find that to be very sexy);). If that wasnt enough for you, she comes out of no where again and SUPER FLYING DRAGON kick the shit out of Shinonome, then proceeds to stomp him out(beautifully executed):D. Im sold on her already.:)
I give it a 8.5 overall:cool:
I see people bandying that this series is only 13 episodes in length. Could someone provide links to official information or supportable evidence on that? As best as I can see at the Amatsuki website (link (http://amatsuki.com/web/index.html)), there has been no mention of the length of this series. Otherwise, it is best that we should not be perpetuating an episode count for the series when there's no official information nor supportable evidence on that.

A yet another very watchable show. I loved the action as well as the dour atmosphere.
Jun Fukuyama and Romi Paku were instantly recognizable from their voices and yes, the music pretty much kicked ass. I was genuinely surprised.

watched the first episode was pretty boring as first episodes go. Looks like it going to be the typical historical, stuck in the past, while fighting demons. Didnt get me too excited the animation was decent I was not impressed but the voices although 2 were familiar the rest didnt stand out to me . Maybe it will take time for me to warm up to it. I did like the samurai girl though her look and style were pretty unique. The best part of the episode was watching her proceed toSuper dragon kick Shinonome in the back of the head and then stomp his ass into the mud all while yelling at him, that had me laughing pretty hard.

The entire historical stuff aspect is there, but not with so much cynicism and sarcasm. I surely didn't get that old campy Inuyasha feeling from this ep that's for sure.

I thought that was rather good. I especially liked the Virtual Edo - if they ever open that place, sign me up. Very realistically done. Too early to get a real feel for the characters and the depth of the writing, but both the characters and the premise show promise, and the visuals are above average.
I liked the first episode and it's nice too see Romi Paku playing another kickass female lead who swings a sword. I'm expecting/hoping for at least one great fight scene considering this is from the director of Rurouni Kenshin OVAs and Chevalier.
Call me surprise, I was expecting to hate this series after reading much of that, IMO, tripe of a manga (atmosphere and pacing? heavens, what?!), but, hey, this is quite a good start and a much smoother (which for some may be considered slow) introduction compared to the source. The difference it makes with Furuhashi at the helm is enormous, which for me is all for the best, really. This is one of those series that I definitely wouldn't mind not going to the faithful adaptation route; it can do loads better.

ep 3
An improvement from ep 2 at least.
Toki begins to see spirits easily now and so he wears an eyepatch. A frekish scene where we see another little guy (much like the attacker from ep 1) doing some dance and rapping...seriously, one of the freakish thing I've seen is a while. I'm not sure if the song even made sense.
The plot however, is really something hard to get into. Currently I see no form of where this is going or where it is leading. *shrugs* I guess only time will tell...
Toki does something stupid again and I think it is concerning the prank from ep 2. Well he admits to whatever it was to some guy and he is taken to be "punished" (or something like that). The other two follow and Kuchiha's moe mode is MOE :D
The end we see toki putting the meaning back into wishing that a hole would open up in the ground and swallowing him up.
Only seen the first episode so far and it was better than I expected, not that I really knew much about the show going into it. I like some of the little details in the show. Like the CG Edo Japan thing is pretty neat. And the fact that the main characters sustain pretty serious injuries is refreshing. Seems most characters in action series these days are nigh indestructable. I also really like personalities of the characters that I've seen so far and liking the characters is pretty huge for me in terms of anime enjoyment. Now I'll just wait for the second and third episodes to get subs to see where the story goes.
Hehehe, this is a very slow entry but Episode 2's summary + screenshots (http://that.animeblogger.net/2008/04/18/amatsuki-episode-2-call-of-the-dog/) is up on the blog. Blame Extrange and his DS addiction.

you have to wonder what Nietzsche would say if he had to observe the kind of surface level existential introspection that is so common in anime. the typical anime writer slaps their philosophical pretensions down in front of the audience like a butcher handling a side of beef. there is a decided lack of subtlety and craft in the delivery.
*shrug*
look, i am not expecting Sartre or Camus. i know that anime is popular entertainment, but heck, even Robert E. Howard showed more artistry with his Conan stories. in The Hour of the Dragon did you even once hear Conan ask, "What is emptiness?" no?
the art looks pretty, and i am intrigued by some of the characters thus far, but whenever i see the Philosophy for Dummies approach rear its ugly head in a pc game or anime i cringe. such crude methods are one of the reasons why anime writers get so little respect from academics, and justly so.

The "emptiness" line uses the kanji 虚, which can mean either "void" or "untruth". When the line comes up later (repeatedly), I chose to translate it as "what is an illusion?" and "what is reality?" since that's relevant to the actual plot development but it still has that Zen vibe. So, I don't think the intent was pop philosophy... it's just a word with two different meanings, and since it was the first instance of the line, I didn't know which one to go with. There is a fair amount of philosophy in Amatsuki, but it's usually slipped in as references to Buddhism and classic Japanese poetry, or as musings on the ambiguous morality of the characters. 7 volumes in, and there's still no clear "good guys" or "bad guys". And don't worry, Toki has yet to show any major angst. Kuchiha is the angst bucket and even she isn't that bad.
fair enough. if episode 1 was an aberration resulting from translation issues then i will endeavour to persevere... but if this turns into insipid and self indulgent navel gazing reminiscent of neon genesis, i am going to blame you for tricking me.
i jest... sort of.

I watched the subbed version of the 1st episode a few days ago. I wasn't too excited over it mainly because of the cliche storyline and the main character's name (Tokidoki?!!).
But now, astonishingly, I can't wait for the next episode! I think it has something to do with Kuchiha....can't wait to see the development between her and Toki, or even Kon :heh:.

lol, Tokidoki is a weird name... but almost all of the characters in Amatsuki are named after Japanese colors, so "toki" is reddish pink, "kon" is navy blue, "kuchiha" is brown, etc.
Another anime with a supernatural element I am so in ... This spring has been really good to my anime watching experience. Now I just have to download it to get started : )

Amatsuki very informative also at the same time it doesnt leave you confused like other historical anime . The information provided on Edo was really neat I hope in rl such virtual world existed . This anime surpassed all my expectations its really that good
This show kinda reminded me of Ayakashi Ayashi but unlike Ayakashi it did not have real confusing first episode

Why is this series so hard to understand >_<
ep 4
From what I can see, Toki has some special ability which is so much more than being able to see demons.
He talks to the "angel" guy about something (seriously...I pretty much got nothing from that scene :heh:).
Afterwards he wakes up to find a loli sitting on top of him. After being attacked by a bunch of mikos, feathers started to pour out of his broken eye (freaky).
The leader of the temple is a doll...even more freaky.
Kuchiha reveals her true form (a giant wolf ~ this is what Horo should have done instead ).
She goes on a rampage but was stopped by Toki who visualised bonds onto Kuchiha which surprisingly came true. So in the end wolf Kuchiha was tied up in giant iron shackles.
Maybe watching this ep half asleep wasn't such a good idea :heh:

He means that Toki's name is "tough" in the sense that it would be problematic. Blond hair and a weird, modern-sounding name stick out too much.
None of his classmates besides Kon go back in time... in the manga, his school friends show up in the first chapter as comic relief, but that scene was cut from the anime. I'm not sure why they're in the OP, really.

Well I Liked The First Two Ep...Look Interesting Anime To Watch
Witting Ep 3 Sub ^.^
I enjoyed episode 2 and it was nice to see Toki repair his relationship with Kuchiha after his comments in the first pissed her off. Question for manga readers..
Is there any romantic developments between Toki and Kuchiha? This is published in a shoujo magazine so I'm guessing while it's obviously not a focus there should be some developments at least. Though whether it's between them two or someone else is the thing.. Just a yes or no answer will do... thanks!
Episode two was a nice watch, especially for that damn wonderful smile from Kuchiha. It's one of those smiles that would lighten my whole day from the morning --- absolutly wonderful.
If possibly, could i reguest a few Kuchiha avatars from the first or second episode?

I've only read up to chapter 22 (manga is up to chapter 44) but...
IIRC, Toki and Kuchiha do have a few moments... so I would say yes. I do get the impression that Toki has feelings for Kuchiha. Not sure if anything causes their relationship to change in future chapters though.
Anyways, when I watched the first episode, I thought Kuchiha's voice was a bit low since I imagined her with a higher voice while reading the manga. But it's nothing that can't be remedied with time.

I too have that problem when characters from manga & books that I've read are not up to what I imagined them to be when converted to the big screen or TV. :p
Regarding episode 2, I was quite taken aback by Kuchiha's smile at the end...just not what I would expect her to do. A pat on the back is more like her.

I just figured I'd throw in my two cents about this show. I was just kind of looking at the main page trying to find something I could jump into and this one sounded the most appealing. To my surprise, it was actually really enjoyable. I really enjoy the characters, especially Kuchiha. While Kon seems to be all sorts of badass, I find myself disliking Toki. Like, actually disliking him to the point where I think the show would be better without him. I think as time goes on, my opinion of him will change, but hey, it's only two episodes in.
Seriously, though, Kuchiha is awesome.
WooHoo! Episode 3 has been subbed and released by Ureshii! :D
I was sad to see some of the developments in epi 3. That character at the end... Anytime theres a character like that introduced, you can always tell, the plot is heading in a bad direction. Not bad as in, oh no horrible things are gonna happen. I'd actually prefer that, but bad as in bad choice of characters, bad choices in plot developments. Just bad!
Hopefully things won't turn out the way I'm thinking.

It wasn't a bad episode, but there were some odd things. When Toki first mentioned his eye patch, I thought, "Did I miss an episode?" And the scene where they come to the basket and then it splits, I wasn't crazy about their reactions. They were ready to just split up. I just think that some of the pacing of the episode wasn't the greatest.
And, yeah, I agree with Molenir, I'm not that fond of the villain introduced at the end of the episode.

Indeed, the pacing was rather bad but the way they did introduce the villain in the end isn't necessary a bad thing, but more of a cliche. Though this time, it was used in a rushed way...and just shows how clueless Toki is when he can't sense danger at all. This is also the same when the time he followed the little "monster guy"...in fact, I am still freaked out by his rapping O.o

I don't think there are any characters in Amatsuki that can really be classified as "villains." There are characters with personal agendas, and characters that aren't exactly trustworthy, and characters that are doing the wrong thing for the right reasons... but no one is really evil.

Well, that's just not true. That character was not introduced at the end of the episode as he was introduced earlier about 2/3 of the way through the episode. Shortly after they introduced the "Princess" who commented that she can't see into the future anymore, the scene switched to introduce that character who then commented that the "Princess" has found Toki. Thus, an introduction to 2 new characters who are on opposing sides.
As to whether he is the "villain", I think Shinkouhyou has given an indication that it may not be clear-cut as it is:
I don't think there are any characters in Amatsuki that can really be classified as "villains." There are characters with personal agendas, and characters that aren't exactly trustworthy, and characters that are doing the wrong thing for the right reasons... but no one is really evil.
With the above, I see it as both sides wanting to use Toki for their own ends. The folk song sung by the mini youkai plants the hint of the uncertainty of who Toki is going to be, a demon slayer (as per Momotarou) or a demon (as per Shuten Douji). The folk song sung seems to end with the child becoming a demon like Shuten Douji and about it being pitiful - does it imply that Toki being likely to fall that way?
However it develops, whatever choice Toki is going to make will have a significant impact - an obvious case of signalling about the impact that Toki is having on those around him from the scene that Toki had with Shamon after dealing with Sasaki.
I've already seen Episode 4 raw but will keep my thoughts on that until you guys watch the subbed Episode 4 when it comes out.

I hate story telling like these. They create conflicts, and emotional dilemmas out of the stupid mistakes of the characters. It's like the writers can't come up with any better ideas. "Oh we are going to create these emotional and plot development by making this character do something so fing stupid that a monkey wouldn't even do and he'll do it twice in one episode".

And don't forget the overly dramatic villain type characters. They're a must have for any show. Seriously. I can hardly remember an action show where they don't have some lameass character doing the dramatic pose, and saying corny dramatic lines. Makes me wish the writers had read/watched Seirei no Moribito. Overly dramatic morons is a sure sign of bad storytelling.

Things moving along with episode 3. Wasn't that big on referring to events they hadn't shown, but oh well. Toki really is one odd guy in how he with relative ease slipped into things. Pretty popular with the women of the neighborhood :heh:.
Really thought when he was chasing that little guy he was going to get into some serious trouble. Ended up slightly going along that path, but not quite the way I was expecting. Still plenty of things I'm uncertain about and will just have to wait and see how things unfold.

And, yeah, I agree with Molenir, I'm not that fond of the villain introduced at the end of the episode.
Heh, the poor guy has barely appeared in the show and people are already accusing him to be a villain. Give him some break

ep 5
I like this episode :)
Even though there wasn't any action scenes, the bonding between Toki and Kuchiha was very interesting to see...like the what the other guy who cut into their conversation said, It is spring already :heh:
The doll princess is actually able to release her soul back into her real body...I use the term "her" lightly because he turns out to be a trap, trap and reverse trap (I'm just as confused :heh:).
Things are moving along nicely but it is still quite confusing without the subs to understand what is going on. Well, it's keeping my attention so far.
Too bad Toki and Kuchiha were interrupted, they were having a nice moment there. :o
Thanks for the screenshots! Can't wait to see the episode.

Yes, he was technically introduced earlier than at the end of the episode. I apologize for callously misstating when a character first appeared on the screen.

Again, I'm sorry for labeling a character who ominously appears before the main protagonist of the story. Forgive me for perceiving the "sink hole" that Toki falls through, which leads to a dark and undisclosed area, as a cryptic situation, almost as though Toki may have fallen into trouble...as the saying goes.
Honestly, I'm just blown away at how I, who have no knowledge of this series through any other form of media, am being so criticized for assuming a character who was so insidiously presented in the anime itself, is a villain. Because I fear the retaliation of those who, I can only assume, like this character and know about him via the manga, I will change my label of "villain" to something more unbiased. How about, I say I don't care for the design of the apparent antagonist? That doesn't imply he's "evil" or "bad", it simply says he seems, at the end of episode three, to be the antagonist for Toki, who is the protagonist.
Does this settle well for everyone? I hope it does. I seriously am sorry for mislabeling, I didn't realize I would be so criticized.

Heh, my presumption is that he is a villain as well, and thank you very much I don't care who criticizes me I'll presume as I like until evidence contradicts me.

Presume away as you like :) No one is stopping you from doing so or, at least, not me. What the others who have posted earlier on this are probably finding it irritating to them is that there must be basis to presume something and the basis must be what is shown in the show - you have not articulated it well and there's so little presented up to that point. If the basis was that it is due to the character being introduced at the end, factually, he wasn't as stated in my post above. For me, it's simply getting the facts right and then argue away based on your opinions of those accumulated facts. That's why this is a discussion thread and you must be prepared to stand by your views based on what has been seen in the show to-date - not based on presumptions and speculative information. It's not a thread where you post your views/opinions and that no one is allowed to have them challenged.

In my defense, I may have mislabeled a character a "villain" without citing reasons why, but nobody, not even yourself, cited reasons why he wasn't a villain. You merely stated that you feel there are two sides trying to "use" Toki for "their own ends". Which, if one considers Toki to be the "good guy" would make those trying to "use" him the "bad guys". However, I wasn't vext that I was being criticized, but by the fact nobody was telling me why he can't be perceived as a villain after his appearances (note the plural) in episode 3. As I stated in this post (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=1574120&postcount=139) on the page before this one, I think I was somewhat justified for feeling the character could be construed as a villain. I will try to once again state my reasons.
Basically, I said that Toki is essentially swallowed up by the ground, something that doesn't bode well for a friendly encounter of any kind, and then he finds himself enter a dark and unknown place with a single person, who's outward appearance is far from something that could be considered "welcoming". If you consider the precedent set by other forms of entertainment, it would appear as though Toki has "landed" himself into some sort of trouble. Though, it's hard to tell for certain what is going to happen, I walked away from the episode feeling as though Toki was about to encounter some sort of villainous character or, perhaps, find himself presented with some sort of danger.
Now, not only have I apologized for mislabeling him a "villain", but I will also apologize for not giving a basis for my reasoning the first time I posted. In all honesty, "villain" was a word I callously chose without considering the connotations it implied.

Now, not only have I apologized for mislabeling him a "villain", but I will also apologize for not giving a basis for my reasoning the first time I posted. In all honesty, "villain" was a word I callously chose without considering the connotations it implied.
Well as far as first impressions got, I also think that Bon is the villain and I don't see a reason not to think so unless he does something that shows that he isn't one. It is natural to assume that there is more to him than what meets the eye, but if someone is saying for certain that he isn't a villain then I would suggest that they keep manga/novel spoilers out of this. As for now, the anime viewers have every right to think so given how he has appeared.
But I also think the line between good and evil in this series is blurred, though there is a side to be taken.

*raises the Not a Manga Reader flag*
The feeling I got after watching episode 4 was that a battle (for lack of a better word) is developing between 2 groups of people who both want the best for their kind: the humans led by the princess and the ayakshi (sp?) led by Bon. So whether Bon is a "villain" would depend on whether you side with his goals or not. Unfortunately for Toki, it seems both sides want / need him in the upcoming battle and are trying to get him on their side without telling the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth.

That's what I thought too when I first watched Episode 4 last week. Hence, my earlier post about waiting for you guys to watch Episode 4 first.
There are 2 groups who want to use Toki for their own ends. However, if you pay attention to what has been said in Episode 4, first by Ginshu and then retorted by the demon hound, it's a case of the humans persecuting the ayakashi in fear. If we look back at the past 3 episodes too, you will note a burgeoning human population too - could this be crowding out the spirits and the ayakashi? - akin to Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke. People are bumping into the ayakashi at a higher incidence and the demon hunters are being deployed to eradicate these ayakashi who are finding their territory being violated by humans.
From what has been posted by some, how easily a number of us automatically presume that the human group is probably good and that the ayakashi are probably evil and due to Bonten being a bit mischievous in his behaviour and leading the ayakashi, one is falling into the trap of presuming that he is the villain. We are probably seeing a deeply-rooted natural prejudice against anything that is not one of our own.

Perhaps so but at the moment I am witholding judgement on which is the 'good' guys and whom is not. I don't think it would be prejudice to persume Bonten is a villain especially as he wants to use Toki as merely a tool and wouldnt care if he had to be discarded after. That way of thinking is hardly that of the good guys. One possibility is that neither side or group maybe in the right which at the moment seems the most likely.
Perhaps so but at the moment I am witholding judgement on which is the 'good' guys and whom is not.
That's what we should be doing.
I don't think it would be prejudice to persume Bonten is a villain especially as he wants to use Toki as merely a tool and wouldnt care if he had to be discarded after. That way of thinking is hardly that of the good guys.
It depends. For now, we know that Bonten sees Toki only as a tool. If and when Toki outlives his usefulness, he would be discarded by Bonten. This is actually logical once you determine that your target is a tool. A tool that outlives its usefulness will not give you any further utility. Bonten has voiced it out.
Ginshu has gone the "hail-thy-hero" method. Toki is called their saviour. How so? Someone with special powers that they desire to be used to achieve their ends. Isn't that similar to a tool? As of now, we do not have any idea what Ginshu would do to Toki if and when Toki outlives his usefulness.
One possibility is that neither side or group maybe in the right which at the moment seems the most likely.
That is what I'm sticking to. I suspect there really isn't a right or wrong group and I don't think there really will be. Each are out to protect their interests.
I've watched Episode 5. Watch it and you'll see which side is causing the problem for the situation shown in it ;)
I agree with DK and LkK that there isn't any precise definition of good, evil, bad, villian, etc when multiple factions/races/lifeforms exists and have conflicting interests. They are rather defined by a person's perspective and may differ from individual/faction/race/lifeform to individual/faction/race/lifeform.
Even though Bonten may try to trick/use Toki with his faction's best interest in mind, he has already sworn allegiance to Toki (EP4 - "When you call me by that name, I will serve only you, in this whole world"). Toki's understanding of Amatsuki world (and how it works) is still very limited and can be changed/influenced based on his experience, and thus he is "blank page" in more than one way. His understanding of Amatsuki world will define his interpretation of those words (depending on whether losses his own perspective in factional conflict or starts viewing Amatsuki world with his own uninfluenced perspective). Also, Bonten refers himself as guardian/protector of Amatsuki world (Ep 4).
Ep 4 had lots of detail thrown in so it was a tad bit confusing . The plot or general story moved a lot , many new characters . The best character introduced was Bonten its really awesome he is a Tengu . I dont know I think it too early to call Bonten an antagonist his group of misfits is hilarious

Can I just say I marathoned all 5 epis :heh: Loving this series! I wont get into the fact that Im in love with Kon (those who know me should know why :D) but the seiyuu cast is wonderful! This was on my list since I knew Paku Romi  was gonna be in it and I love her character. I forgot FukuJun was in this, that was a nice surprise but I squealed the most when I heard Sawabe Junichi as Bon :D Oh sexy voice for a nice looking tengu. I very much like historical/period anime like RuroKen, Bakumatsu Iroha, Mononoke, so Im really glad I decided to watch this. Little sad I cant find anyone blogging it since I have some questions about epi 5.
One down side...OMG DOES THE HIME HAVE TO BE A PUPPET!!! D: Only puppet I like is Ukon! The rest scare the heck outta me! Ugh....that creeped me out in epi 4 I was like...smoke clears...omg evil looking doll!! ~flashes back to Ghost Hunt~

I just saw episode 4. At least the story knows that the main character is an idiot. Now there seems to be hope for this story. If it's just going to be the main character doing stupid things and making the situation escalate to a far more undesirable outcome like ep 3 then this show would really suck.

Princess is another asextual being this season and she never answered kon's question.
Episode 6 is out....about the "Hime"...
Apparently Ginshu was Shinshuu's brother before he was cursed by the snake demon. He's asexual now I think. He has a clearly male voice too. I don't think I can call the hime a "she" anymore. o_O
I don't really view Bonten and the ayakashi as being bad guys. The hime gives me worse vibes...but then that's probably cause I really hate Ginshu's doll form. It's creepy. I do get the sense that neither side is really "evil". Ginshu wants to protect humanity, but imho is just going about it the wrong way. They go around killing the ayakashi, which of course pisses them off and makes them attack humans more. The ayakashii are clearly not brainless monsters. They have emotions and seem to care when other ayakashi are hurt, like Tsuyukusa running off by himself to try to help that fox demon. Maybe Toki is the key to getting both sides to just stop fighting each other.

I won't really call them the bad guys either until we know what their objectives are. But feelings tell me that whatever they have planned will be bad for Hime's side.
ep 6
Ohhh Hime's past...
And in the past it was clear that Hime was a guy whereas now he is a gender inbetween. It is revealed that he got to this state because the young girl let in some bad Ayakashi through the barrier. Hime fought the ayakashis but they were really strong. We aren't show how the ayakashi was defeated but the result must be some sacrificing on Hime's part.
The girl has blamed herself ever since. I was surprised that Toki then summoned Bonten and asked him for help. Naturally he won't help the enemy, but gave Toki some advice on how he can save Hime (as a gift or something like that).
Highlight scene, Kon feeding a stubbon (but very hungry) Kuchiha :heh:
She is moe :p
@ person above Allison to Lilia? wut?
Bonten or Tengu in genral reminded me of Haruka from Tactics . Incidentally they both have blacks wings too

Ah curses, why does this have to be such a dialogue heavy episode...have mercy please :heh:
ep 7
Honestly...I would be lying if I said I understand half of what's going on O.o
Well, but that is only for the specifics. The general bonding stuff between Toki and Kuchiha was well explained by their actions. Toki is such a drag to be "shy" about sleeping in the same room as Kuchiha...he really needs to stop being so formal (just look at Kon who openly argues with Kuchiha :heh:).
A nice flashback from Toki about his past. His father (or guardian) left him at a young age for an unknown reason, but their goodbye together was pretty amusing to watch.
The blind guy (sorry forgot his name) shows that he may be more than what we expect. Just which side is he on, and for that matter it seems that Hime seems to know Bonten and vice versa.
Surprisingly cliffhanger end...
ep 7for that matter it seems that Hime seems to know Bonten and vice versa.
Is that surprising to you? I thought that had been established in episode 4. Or maybe you're referring to something or someone else from an episode that hasn't been subbed yet?

Well "know" each other in a deeper sense. Hime could have met him once or twice or might actually have bonds with him. I just find it mysterious that Bonten addresses Hime as someone he knows on that deeper level (like they were once friends or something...but I could be horribly wrong so don't take my word :p).
I guess I read more into ep 4 than was really there. After ep 4, I automatically made the assumption that things are the way you described because they so often are in situations like that in anime. I've gotten used to it and have come to expect it now. :heh:

Just speculating, but I'd guessed the Hime was originally a woman. Every one refers to the Hime as a female, even the ayakashi (sp?) who presumably knew her way back when. The doll is female, so that could explain it. But I think if the person was originally male, they would still use male references despite the doll.
*makes note to learn how to spell "ayakashi"*
What caught me totally by surprise in this episode was Bonten's reference to Napolean. I knew he knows about our world. But to know about Napolean indicates a level of knowledge that I wasn't expecting. I really wonder how he learned so much about Toki's world.
Hah, ep.7 surprised me a little. I completely didn't expect Toki's flashback. I thought Suou is going to be dropped completely just to avoid the Chitose sub plot.

Ohhh...an episode dedicated to Kuchiha :)
I suspected that she had a traumatic past being possessed by an ayakashi and sure enough, it was pretty touching.
Shamon was the one who saved her from hell and their first meeting was pretty interesting. Again I can't get a lot of what was said but I can make out the general conversation. Kuchiha wanted to die in the end but Shamon wants to save her with everything.
And so their relationship begins.
Young Kuchiha was really cute imo, and when she grew up, dam is she deadly :heh:

Did go and answer the whether Hime was a guy or girl initially thing pretty quick. Though we only got to see the flashback seems like it really was one hell of a fight against that snake. Seems like its a lot more painful transferring into a flesh body, but the fear that he feels about that doll form is understandable.
But in the flashback Shinshuu refers to Hime as "nii-sama", which means brother. He looks like a guy in the flashback too.
Yeah, it was the "Nii-san" that sealed it. A shame really, because Ginshu being genderless was rather run while it lasted.

ep 9
I don't think I will even try to interpret this episode :heh:
It was hard enough to make out what was going on in the flashback as it is :heh:
Instead I will just skip to the end as say that Heihachi isn't in a very good shape. The fox demon that was shown a few eps back batter him up seriously but that wasn't all without meaning.
It seems that her memories somehow got transfered to Heihachi who was more or less unconcious.
From the memories it turns out that the fox wasn't bad initially but she had a master who was a scholar she loved.
But the guy died when his tree was cut down and she went into a berserk rage.
As for the rest...need subs :heh:

That's just annoying. It's not that easy to fansub this show. I'm watching the raws and let me tell you that every episode starting from Episode 5 has been near end-to-end non-stop dialogue. I'm doing rewatches to get a handle on the conversations and waiting for fansubs to come out to countercheck my understanding of what was said.
If you're so impatient, go watch the raws and see whether you can do any better than them in releasing properly fansubbed episodes of the show, say starting from Episode 7, before they do. If you can't, then quit whining.

ep 13 - end
Seriously...no subs for this series really kills the enjoyment. But as far as what happened Toki manages to save the fox demon (who turns into a normal fox but perhaps without her soul). Though it was a happy end for the fox demon as she is reunited with her spirit master.
Something happened and Hime tried to summon the gods for some reason (I am guessing here that he is trying to escape the curse) but in the end he fails and dies, turning into butterflies who tells Kon to escape.
Good and evil is a very blurred line in this series...but the ending is open for a second season, and I would expect that no doubt.

Well now I'm going to be curious about the ending, but will just keep following the subs until we're done. Holy crap Heihachi!? What the heck was that? Walk into that place have a nice chat with Tsuyukusa and then that crazy woman kills him. Oh sure we haven't seen a body, but that much blood pretty much means dead. Been a while since I saw the last episode, but still he was a good guy. I have few words to describe how I'm feeling about this.
I feel bad that I can only remember only a few names in this series. But maybe because its late, but I didn't quite get why hime knocked out that guy. I know he has a name, it just escapes me at the moment :heh:.
Still maybe more than with any other time in this series I really want to see the next episode.
*Edit
Well interesting how that works out :heh:. Want to see the next episode and the subbers provide with impressive timing. Have to thank them for that.Of course went in a different direction from the last episode. Not that covering Kuchiha's past isn't important, just seemed strange that we jumped right into it. At least the preview showed that Heihachi is still alive. Pretty seriously injured and not in a place I'd like to be, but alive. But now I want to see the next episode :heh:.
Still enjoyed getting a look into her past and what happened. The relationships between people and demons is intricate. Neither is innately evil, but with such visible differences problems can occur. The very existance of demon hunters kind of reflects it. Can only imagine what its like to be a part of that race knowing that humans have set up specialists for killing you. Though they can also kill humans as well. Poor Kuchiha though, for a time was revered by the village and then despised. Views of people change and a girl got into a terrible situation as a result. Liked the relationship with Shamon and the demon inside Kuchiha. Even got her embarrassed a little there :D.
Also got a story about what felt like some random monk. Though seeing how people are connected in a way. Was at Shamon's place for a time and then ending up at the hime's temple. Just a little funny how people can be connected.
The random monk story in episode 08 was very random. Not so much out of place, just random. Still nice to see more views from people in this world concerning humans and demons.
Kuchiha backstory was very lovely indeed, and very much welcome. Also as of late i just seem to adore Ginshu's scenes. I must be falling for 'it' (i hate saying that, though i don't know what other word i can use).

Amatsuki is one of those shows where I feel my lack of exposure to Japanese culture puts me at a real disadvantage. Episode 8 really brought this home during the whole discussion about Buddhism and Zen in particular. I can appreciate shows like this, or Mononoke, on one level, but I still feel like there's another level of understanding that I'm totally not in touch with.
I suppose Japanese people would have similar difficulties with a show about Catholicism, to take just one example.
This is probably another show I need to watch again from the beginning, along with Real Drive, to gain a better sense of continuity. I'm glad we're seeing more of Kuchicha; Tokidoki seems rather a generic protagonist so far. As for Kon, he's probably my favorite character with Ginshu second but closing fast.

See i just want to rewatch the series after it's finished, so i can capture all of Kuchicha scene's for avatar material. :heh:
But yeah, i could understand how this show could come across as more enjoyable during a marathon session.
Man, I really wish there were more episodes. Maybe they can do an OVA series to cover the rest of the manga.

Well Heihachi is still alive though I'd hardly call his situation ideal. Hopefully he gets a hand sooner or later. At that rate Imayou is going to kill the guy by stepping on him way too much.
Kind of sad how things got to this point. The tree spirit really was a good guy. Unlike some others really respected all life. Sure humans do bad things, but he didn't just paint them with one image. Saw them as the same as everyone else and took that form because of how he was helped by human kindness. Sadly Imayou lost herself to rage after he was cut down and has turned into something dark. Though human demon hunters etc would only see her as a monster and never understand how things got to this point.
Think Toki has picked up on these feelings. They just see the other side as their enemy. Its a natural point of view to see things like that. Someone like Toki can have a better point of view since he's only recently got there. The decisions he makes with the power he has will have major consequences.
I'm just happy to see Kuchiha blushing appears again in episode 10. <3
I really do need a blushing Kuchiha avatar.
Oh my Kuchicha, you are so moe in episode 10.

Well hopefully Heihachi is alright. Don't think whatever is being done to get information is fatal just a little disturbing to watch :heh:. Seems like Tsuyukusa agreed to go with the Fox and treated Heihachi before leaving him out there. Obviously safer than taking him along with the mental state of that fox.
Always impressive maturity with Kuchiha getting into a heated argument with a little girl. Even if its safer to not take her along (though in that case might as well have left her entirely), but wasn't handled well at all. Had her moe moments so it balanced out and a fight against Tsuyukusa seems to be coming. Just showing that these two sides will fight likely due to prejudices about the other.
Good episode overall.

Well things are progressing to a climax to be sure. Was kind of disturbing with Kuchiha there for a bit. Just flew off the handle when Tsuyukusa showed up. Not to mention the creepy 'slaughter the other side' speech she was giving there. So if you can have disputes and the other side is different you should just annihilate them? No wonder Toki was creeped out by this. Able to see both sides views and then how it clashes with the standard view of everyone else.
Really get to see the similarities for everyone. Be they demon, human, or where Toki is from. There are those you care about and would be enraged if something happened to them. Sadly no one is willing to see the other side of it and thus you get all this conflict. Just a sad thing you have there.
But looks like its going to be a mess next episode.

Last episode was simply brilliant, just like the show has been since the beginning. I'm not even going to say it's an ending, because it's clearly not. After leaving us with such a cliffhanger, i hope they plan to carry this show as soon as possible --- OVA, DVD only episodes or another season. Any will do please.
I absolutely loved the comedy between the demons, especially Utsubushi. I laughed so much at the jokes centered around him --- like Bon saying he's just transportation, his chat with Toki and of course, being quite tall. It's the light hearted scenes that i loved so much about this series. Great character interaction.
A few questions for manga readers --- was the last episode all manga material? And if so, what chapter/volume did the anime end at?

This better not be the last episode. Otherwise, it'll be terrible. This might be the biggest cliffhanger I've ever seen in a series with no presently-announced future.

I think all of it is manga. I rushed through it though. It appears to end around chap 24, with that hand sticking out and all.
Urghhh I wanted to see more Kuchiha for the last episode :( Hope they'll make another season or something, because the real problem finally showed itself at the end -o-

Damn that was one heck of a finish. They unleash all this and now its over :heh:. Definitely requires another season to carry on. So much stuff went on there it might take a bit of time to absorb it all.
Nice work though by Toki to help out the fox. He didn't want to choose a future where he saved humans and then sacrificed some demons as a result. Certainly wants to help out as many as he can. Though there are some who simply won't accept the viewpoint he has as being valid. It worked out though and he really pulled out something amazing there.
Got some serious threats though on the human side. Will have to be careful that they don't decide to take him out. But wow the whole thing with heaven really was a shock. Bon plans on taking that on and installing Toki as the new Teiten!? Talk about your ambitious plans.
Ginshu got taken out! Then turned into glowing butterflys that pass along the message to run for the hills. Talk about a major development being tossed in there at the very end.

all i can say is WTF!!!!
this is soooo incomplete
they need at least 1 more season to clean up the story line, there are still so many scenes from the preview that has not yet aired
and there are sooo much to the story line that was left up in the air....
this is a good series, and good story too, i really hope they make season 2
this is one of those that it is actually worth buying the originals when they come out.

Considering this is a monthly release manga, I do not think they will release a second season any time soon. This is kind of depressing. It kind of feels like Claymore, when it ended. I love the series, but I know that it will be years, if ever, before another season will show up.
Which, made me realize that series can revive after years from the first season. Guyver and Ah! My Goddess comes to mind as series that took a long time for the manga to be released before another Anime season comes out.
This is one of those excellent series that I would recommend.

The ending honestly was poor and let the rest of the series down unless another series follows it in the near future. It would be an okay episode to set something up for future episodes but as an ending it is awful. It fails to conclude most of the characters even pratically hardly even showing one of the main characters.
I really expect them to do another season now just because that episode was not an ending as such and was probably one of the worst episodes of the entire series.

Well, it was not an ending because it wasn't. I don't think I really should feel disappointed other than that they decided to animate it before the manga could catch up.

I am getting this one eventually. Not quite yet though.

It's obvious it wasn't the ending, i mean i'd take this over an anime original ending any day --- especially how obvious it is that the story was no way near the ending point.
The anime's end is directly from the manga. It's chapter 24 which is the end of volume 4. There are 7 volumes currently out.

Ok so I just watched all thirteen episodes from start to finish for the first time.
I will say that the story is very interesting. It started out rather chaotic but matured later by filling in the viewers with what is happening behind the scenes. The characters all play very specific roles which I enjoy and have intelligent dialog which is also a plus.
Now it's pretty obvious that the thirteenth episode is a halfway point and is in no way an ending episode. Anyone who thinks that isn't very observant. Now whether they give us the second half will be up to the studio and the manga. As several have already mentioned the manga is not far enough along for the studio to take it and finish the storyline or even give us the next part if there is going to be more than two parts.
All we can do as fans is wait and pray. Regardless I thought it was a very enjoyable anime series and I would recommend it to my friends that enjoy supernatural element in their anime.
the manga is only a little bit ahead of the current anime ending, so it'll take ages (assuming it gets really popular) for a second season to come out. The anime has also left a few important things out... well, it's a shame 13 episodes don't seem to have gone anywhere. Guess it's type of anime that will draw more people to read the manga.

Yes but its the ending of the first series and theres always the possibility that a second series won't be made like you've said or even when it will be made. More should have been done with interaction between the characters in that episode.

The interaction between the characters was good enough. It was one of the strong points of the episode, and i found nothing wrong with it. It was a cliffhanger ending --- and as along as you can see it like that you'll be able to accept it.

Yeah, I thought exactly the same :)
I wished I had stumbled upon this thread earlier. Finished the show recently and I'm craving for more now. :( Kinda hate it that studios animate series which are not completely serialized yet. Then again, while this is a good series with interesting ideas I can't help feeling that it would end up with a horrible conclusion. Not to mention I kept anticipating cliches while watching this. I think I am too deeply scarred by the genre.

You're no fun. :(
Meh, I guess there's no need for me to say what I felt after doing a marathon today. Pretty much what I was gonna say was said already in this thread :heh:
Overall, this is quite a good series and I do hope for a s2 some time soon.
Still, this cliffhanger is quite agitating. Same goes to how each episode ended with an unfinished business. Well, no use in quabling now I just hope Studio DEEN won't let us wait too long.
You're no fun. :(
no fun but a wise choice he made...
So I just watched all 13 and I am still lost.
All I got out of this is humans are killing off demons, not all demons are bad and many would like to have peace with humans, the main character wants to save both demons and humans, there are four super powerful beings(The biggest confusion for me), and the Americans are coming(Doubt we will see this, but they mention it, lol).

So I just watched all 13 and I am still lost.
The setup is a classical style JP alt setting with a "computer world" twist, its a world of demons and humans with a "creation" thats the order for the world as well as its maker, the main character is a blank page of creation able to rewrite its code.
The Human/Demon situation is one of race and creed seen in todays world they can get along but through pettiness and spite do not this of course breeds more of it,current "creation" seeks a odd stern balance.
The choices the main character has are return to his old placid life or "save" the world he is in, things grow complicated as he seeks to save the world on his own terms.
One could say he is both king and pawn to the story.
One thing I wondered. Is this world 'real' in the best sense or still a computer program he got trapped in? Like, will history continue as normal(With the American Navy's arrival being the next big event) or will it reset since it is just a computer program?

I would be surprised if it was on the same timeline, I would prefer to believe this is a parallel world, with being in "creation" enjoying to pull people out of the real world for the purposes of experimentation..
And the one pulling is Yakou?

And the one pulling is Yakou?
Now that I am unsure, it dose seem to enjoy such things tho.
I can only assume it or they (IE "creation" note I do not use the word god/God as it seems as a more lose collection of beings than a typical deity setup), say in order to do whatever ti is they do they bringing people and some random lucky person gets to be the blank page.
Any manga readers here want to give the full details? I can only read so much into it before I start rambling like a drunk :P :heh:

what a great series :)
I just finished it and am HOPING to god they get that second season going. The plot was so interesting and imo not hard at all to follow if you payed attention.
I LOVE how the line between the good guys and the bad guys are sooo close. It's going to be nice seeing how things go. I am personally looking forward to what (god sorry forget his name!) the leader of the demons is going to do because of the princess turning against heaven's net like he wants to.
