I'm expecting it to be a 1-cour season, as do many others. It is my belief that 1-cour will be fitting enough to cover the events in After Story.

The other problem that may arise now is how it will be scheduled in regards to Suzumiya Haruhi Season 2.

So they really decided to make CLANNAD span more than 2-cours. :) Too bad it's not consecutive, or I would have brought up one of my earlier prediction posts. :heh: More despair for FMP! and Munto fans though... since SHnY at least has a next season confirmed. :heh:

With After Story, this will make CLANNAD KyoAni's longest running series. :)

Nothing against AS, but I hope it just airs after FMP3 and Haruhi2.

There is little to no chance for FMP3 to be animated anytime soon. The current plot in the novels prevent any possible open end at all, even with 24-26 episodes time span.
Hence, it will certainly end like a cliffhanger, thus they have to either make a new end (which is hardly KyoAni's habit) or they have to wait for the end of the novels (which is the most likely).

As for the order, just wait for the announcement of After Story, it would save time and meaningless debate on "which is better to make another series".

As personal opinion, Clannad has so many things to add that it has the biggest "sequel worthy" point (not about preferences) compared to the other 2. FMP TSR is nicely open ended, and Haruhi is "at first glance" (don't take it as a solid statement) that it is episodic/not really getting any much continuity (which is of course false, by reading the novels, but that's the state they leave with Haruhi 1).

Well, wait and see.

Nothing against AS, but I hope it just airs after FMP3 and Haruhi2.

FMP has 3 seasons, and seems to be endless. Haruhi is very slice of life, self contained inside each light novel, at least until book 7, which would probably not be animated. Clannad is connected, so delaying the resolution for series which have no resolution written and would probably not resolve within one season is just wrong. Everyone is in the full Clannad mode right now, let's not dampen it with another story and then slap us with Clannad again.

I'm told by one of my sources that the second season will likely be in October (like when CLANNAD was originally announced a year ago), but we'll know all the gory details as early as this weekend.

Yes, but FMP: fumoffu is almost like a spin-off, hence we say that FMP and FMP: TSR are the first and second seasons.

Kyoani will make clannad more then 24 eps only under one condition :

they can earn more by making more eps, not losing more.

and from what I saw, if clannad can keep the rest dvd vols
have the same sale just like it's dvd vol. 1 (about 24,000),

it seems some people think anime can be produced freely,
but the fact is:

when an studio does not have enough money,
they can't keep anime running even if they want to.

there are two main resources support Kyoani right now : kadokawa and key.

no need to worry the kadokawa side since haruhi and lucky star doing well.

but for the key side, after the low sale on kanon, clannad may be the last chance

Never once have I doubted that Kyo-Ani will not make a season 2 for Clannad, because, as the ending shows, the story is clearly incomplete. From how I see it, Kyo-Ani has always intended for Clannad to be a single project, divided into two due to its large but complete story, unlike those of Haruhi and FMP, where doing it season by season is more feasible since their stories are still incomplete.

So your claim (and you were so damn confident about it without providing any solid figures) about DVD sales affecting the making of season 2 is moot, to say the least.

Now then, I can't say anymore about Afterstory than to say that KyoAni will need the same length as S1 to get this story done. There is alot of things to cover yet, and Clannad, even with just Afterstory, actually still has more material to animate...

I thought they had probably decided to fall in line with Sunrise's method of doing things with regard to Code Geass and Gundam 00. I wonder if this is the new trend now and if others will follow suit too. The thing is it honest to god works in generating hype.

Then again hype is the primary reason that Clannad Season 1 met with such a huge backlash with regard to it's finale from some people. I also think they probably would have been better of doing what Sunrise did with 00 and announced from the beginning that Clannad was going to be a split series. It would have saved them a lot of hate and would have been the courteous thing to do for the fans rather then leaving them in the dark for almost a month as it stood until now. And hopefully this decision also doesn't backfire on them as well. They made the right decision, just the execution and timing of it all could have been handled a lot better.

The visual novel and the game are one and the same though. There is a novel called CLANNAD Another Story which is effectively a series of stories that are additional to the game content, in case you were referring to that.

I'd have to agree that if this was the plan all along (i.e. Clannad then do After Story), they probably should have said so upfront - unless they were just going to go through the whole thing in one go. Given how a big part of Kyoto Animation's reputation is the adapting material fairly faithfully, it was pretty obvious that this was coming - I couldn't see them just stopping more or less halfway through the story.

As for whether the "split seasons" trick is going to be a trend, I think it might end up being the case for series like Gundam 00, Code Geass, and Clannad, where they have a big - but finite - story to tell and the odds of strong ratings all the way through is good. No matter how well something is written, I can't help but think it's tough to maintain momentum and interest over 52 or whatever episodes. It's also a pretty big commitment for a studio to make as well.

For series which aren't quite a "slam dunk" or don't have finite end as of yet (for adaptations), I can see studios taking the approach of doing one season at a time, but leaving themselves an opening to do another should the interest (and material!) be there.

But as for After Story - looking forward to it. It's (Clannad) easily the best of their visual novel adaptations, and they've done a good job of building up Nagisa and Tomoya as a couple (although they could have handled the twins and Tomoyo a more smoothly). Where they go from here should be interesting.

I imagine the reason why KyoAni didn't announce this before the start of the season was probably because, at that stage, they weren't certain they were going to do this. And then there's the hype and marketing reasons as well.

Anyway, my opinion of this is pretty neutral. I welcome a second season of Clannad, but it doesn't make or break my opinion of the first season, since I really didn't find anything unsatisfactory about the ending.

Doubt they could actually fit in Tomoyo and Kyou's path from the school life arc in. Doubt they would throw in Tomoyo After too, considering the time difference.

I imagine the reason why KyoAni didn't announce this before the start of the season was probably because, at that stage, they weren't certain they were going to do this. And then there's the hype and marketing reasons as well.Personally, and in retrospect, I think this has been in the works forever -- from the moment Clannad was in the planning stages. But as a conderation to viewers who haven't yet played the game (and would be thus be compelled to look into it if they heard an "After Story" was being animated), and to keep people guessing a bit, they didn't announce it. This is exactly the same thing Starchild did with the D.C. II's adaptation, and for a similar reason -- people who knew the game could see it coming, but announcing it would have given away the way things were going to end and what was still to come.

So yeah, marketing, hype, but also good storytelling sense. Telling an audience the a part 2 is on the way establishes a different expectation/interpretation of the plot than not telling them. Though, certainly, doing it this way carries at least some degree of risk of annoying the fanbase.

I guess my biggest question now is whether the OP/ED will change or not... I don't think the OP will, but I do wonder if they want a more downbeat ending song or not... I mean, I don't see them using Chiisana Terohina every episode, but maybe something from the Vocal albums?

Kyo-Ani would indeed be foolish to simply end Clannad at the School Life arc. Objectively speaking, Clannad season 1 is a decent show, but very mediocre when put alongside Kanon 2006 and AIR. After Story would fill up that emotional gap (aka "tear gas attack") Kanon and AIR fans would be craving for.

I would say season 1 only has 25% of the story's essence, whereas After Story would have 75%. Though I wish it'll be another 24 episodes, I'm fine with 12 episodes as well, and if Kyo-Ani can make legions cry with 12 episodes of AIR, I'm sure this would be a piece of cake for them.

I already knew from the beginning that we were going to have a season 2. Well I couldn't know for sure of course, but I just had a feeling XD;

They could make it a 12-13 episode season if they'll focus on Nagisa and Tomoya, but they could easily make it a 24 episode season if they'll focus on the side characters as well (they could make the side characters interact more in the school part)

I think that we'll get a great ending to the show.

Why tears would be a requirement? All I want is to see Tomoya's and Nagisa's couple life. Seeing them going through challenges of a married couple is enough for me. And a change from romance anime that usually end when guy choose/confess/kiss the girl. I liked Clannad well enough for Tomoya and Nagisa development alone, and welcome After Story as continuation of Nagisa x Tomoya.

Why tears would be a requirement? All I want is to see Tomoya's and Nagisa's couple life. Seeing them going through challenges of a married couple is enough for me. And a change from romance anime that usually end when guy choose/confess/kiss the girl. I liked Clannad well enough for Tomoya and Nagisa development alone, and welcome After Story as continuation of Nagisa x Tomoya.

If you're reading this, mugener, today's announcement has completely blown your proclamation that Kyo-Ani is suffering from monetary difficulties from their Clannad DVD sales to make a season 2 out of the window.

Never once have I doubted that Kyo-Ani will not make a season 2 for Clannad, because, as the ending shows, the story is clearly incomplete. From how I see it, Kyo-Ani has always intended for Clannad to be a single project, divided into two due to its large but complete story, unlike those of Haruhi and FMP, where doing it season by season is more feasible since their stories are still incomplete.

So your claim (and you were so damn confident about it without providing any solid figures) about DVD sales affecting the making of season 2 is moot, to say the least.

If you don't want to be spoiled then wait for the ~After Story~ animated version.
Playing Nagisa's route is ok for now if you've watched the entire series and have an understanding of it. :)

Oh wow. I'm so excited. I just can't wait. I haven't been check daily for announcements like I usually do and of course when I don't the best news comes: that the after story is going to be animated! I finally got around to watching the extra and when they showed the teaser at the end I got so excited! I have the feeling that I'm going to playing the trailer a lot until the after story comes out which I'm hoping is October.... *crosses fingers*

I certainly hope The After Story comes out before Haruhi Suzumiya second season because although I do love Haruhi, I like Clannad more. Besides, I can read the Haruhi novels anyday, but I have no way of getting my hands on the Clannad game.

Just from scanning Kyo-Ani's announcement dates, I think it's unlikely that Haruhi 2nd Season will come out later than Clannad After Story. (note, I did not scan very hard)

Yeah I know, it didn't belong in this thread to begin with so I reported it. It was a question that was phrased in a way that uncovered certain aspects of the AS. My primary concern was to just post something so that a new page would be created in the thread (thus giving those who never played the game a heads-up) while waiting for someone to act on the reported post. Skyfall swooped in and took care of it pretty much instantly, so I hope that no one had time to actually get spoiled by the question.

Speaking of spoiler, just to let you know: we do treat such problems quite quickly. However, report is fine enough.
But since we aren't bots/machines, we can't respond instantly, so people might read the spoiler.

Here comes the little problem: a spoiler might look "harmless" until someone expose its true colors. Hence, saying "put that in spoilers tags!" etc is just confirming the problem, and it will go quite a predicament before we act.
That happened several times, be it on CLANNAD or anywhere else (for instance, I remember there was a gigantic fuss on a picture which was NOT a spoiler until someone said about it, which detonated the bomb).

Hence, as a general advice, please report ASAP, but stay in submarine mode until we intervene. That's the safest way :)

But KyoAni isn't writing the story. They're adapting it from the Key game. If you overlook the character arc meshing, season one actually follows the game events pretty well. Many lines and jokes are even copied from the game almost verbatim. We can expect season two to be the same.

I've been warned against spoilers, but I can rest assure you that After Story contains a lot of slice of life (adult life) and is not some stupid romantic love-hate drama. The drama is much more profound.

Yeah, they could definitely fit the rest of the side character arcs into the rest of Tomoya's school year if they did 24 episodes.

I have just heard the news that Tomoyo's story won't be just one episode, instead it is gonna be a whole new season of clannad focused on Tomoyo. The "extra" episode from DVD is just going to be a preview of the story.

If the next project will be something from Key Games, so, it think, it should be a Planetarian story at first.

I'd prefer to see a 2-hour Planetarian OVA instead of a series. The animation would be of epic quality.

I have just heard the news that Tomoyo's story won't be just one episode, instead it is gonna be a whole new season of clannad focused on Tomoyo. The "extra" episode from DVD is just going to be a preview of the story.

Clannad has been announced to be one of the anime to be featured at the TBS anime festa 2008 (http://www.tbs.co.jp/anime/festa/) and considering how Air, Kanon, and Clannad were all shown in TBS anime festa first before starting on TV soon after, the possibility of Clannad after story starting in October has become a lot more real.

Probably shortly after midnight on October 3rd in JST is my guess. Kyoani seems to like that slot a lot with Kanon and Clannad.
