Hmm, this season didn't change my view on the characters drastically, but there were some changes.

Shana: My all-time favourite anime girl. I liked her more in season 1, but she's still awesome and kawaii in my eyes. I missed her triple urusai a lot in this season, as well as her aggressive personaliy sometimes (This is probably because of the many slice of life episodes this season) But her new cute outfits and her protectiveness of Yuji made up for it:)

She still gets a 10/10 from me.

Yuji: I didn't like him too much in season 1, but I like him quite a lot now. He isn't the helpless boy who can only whine no more. He learned to fight and has made his resolve to protect the village. He did show his weak side in the beginning of the season, but in the second half of the season he turned into a fine male lead. I didn't like that he was too indecisive in the love area though.

He gets a 8/10 from me.

Wilhelmina: I already liked her in season one, but I like her even more now. She really grew on me this season. She's stronger than she looks and her personality is really cute sometimes. Trying to act like her mother for instance. Combine that with the dry Tiamat...awesome

She gets a 8/10 from me.

Hecate: Most of her was anime original, but I still liked her. She stays pretty cute. She changed a lot from season 1 in some aspects though. Her new fighting abilities were nice and I liked that she had trouble with her new 'emotions' sometimes. They did 'overuse' her this season imo though.

She gets a 7/10 from me.

Dantalion and Domino: Don't ask...I just like the weirdos XD;

They get a 6.5/10 from me.

^ I don't really see how Hecate is overused. I doubt her screentime amounts to even 10 minutes through the whole season. She barely had any appearances aside from her attack on Yuji to seal silver again and the very last episode.

If i were to say which character is overused, it has got to be Kazumi. She didn't really have a purpose and the writers didn't really seem to know what she is supposed to do either. Her involvement in the story lacks any form of creativity and she is very limited in her actions, which would amount to thinking one thought: "i want to stand in the same place as Sakai-kun and Shana-chan".

Her role in season 1 was much more defined and her presence more meaningful. But it seems that after fulfilling her role as Shana's rival in season 1, now it seems the writers simply had ran out of ideas what to do with her, thus she ends up as presence with barely any purpose.

As for my favorites ... i am not really sure i have one :heh: Yes, i have some characters i would prefer over others, but i don't really like any of them to the extent i would want to vote for them on the poll and say "yes, this is a charater i like from SnS".

Yoshida Kazumi - Alright, you all knew it was coming. Kazumi, to me, is the character that makes this anime worth watching. She is sweet, kind, cute, and overall a completely normal girl. Her love for Yuji is pure, and she is just so completely selfless. If this series was renamed "The Devient World" with Kazumi emerging as the late heroine, it would be a complete work of art. Yuji should have chose her. :(
Hecate - Maybe it's just Noto Mamiko or something, but Hecate by far has the most character development of anyone in the series, in my opinion. It's interesting to watch her. Like, she was quietly evil in season one, but this season, from the bird scene and the end of twenty four, it shows that there is more to her than meets the eye. She's still nowhere near Kazumi, but she gets into my favorites.
Seeking Researcher - Honestly, there's too much good about him to pass him up. Namely, when he appears and is in action, the storyline moves with such a quick pace. Though he is impossible to time, since he never ends his phrases...

1) Shana : She was the reason I got into Shakugan no Shana. No Shana = no show IMO. And I love her melon bread love. :) +10 for Shana since shes voiced by Rie Kugimiya too. I may just be a closet lolicon though...

2) Alastor : I love him in the Shana-tan Specials.

3) Konoe Fumina : Even though the episodes she were in sucked hard I still like her. It may just be Noto Mamiko like ChrissieXD said.

All the other characters are likeable just not my favorites, though sometimes I wanted to smack my head repeatedly into a wall at Yuji's density at the 2 girl's feelings. If I hated 1 of them I would fast forward to the next scene in 0.001 seconds.

Kazumi - the main link in the series to the normal world, sweet, kind...... I'm saying the same things as ChrissieXD. :heh:
Personally, I think there was way too much hate and death posts at her...

Fumina - voted for her because of everything she is, except the Hecate deletes her part

There was no character that I hated in this series. However, I had to narrow down my vote to four people.

Kazumi Yoshida- Poor Kazumi, so many people dislike her; worse, hate her. I thought Kazumi was a great character, very nice, helpful, and cool at times. She was very brave, following her "feelings" and sticking with what she believes. Apparently, some people don't like how normal humans think aka "Yuji, I want to be with you". But, then again, I'm probably sticking words into people’s mouths, so ignore these, probably, false accusations.

Yuji Sakai- Surprisingly, there were problems with him, too. I still liked Yuji; he grew a lot in this season. He turned into quite a fighter, using the Bloodsucker and his sliver flame... thingy (I forgot). Yuji is awesome.

Margery Daw- She also grew more awesome this season. It was nice to see her a little more of her life, the whole Yuri and Annaberg episodes. Not to mention that she is so awesome and helpful in fights and in general. Basically, she is more awesome this season.

Fumina Konoe- Another controversy, I liked her. She was so "cute" and a competitor for Shana and Kazumi. Besides, she brought Shana and Kazumi more together.

"Honorable mention" goes to Wirhelmina Carmel, Shana, and Hecate.

I love the fact she reaches out to birds, it's so innocent, and omfg her in a witch costume shoots me back to Yuki Nagato and Tabitha, oh Konoe Fumina is oh so cute in that costume. :heh: I cried like so much on episode 15 when she went away, then a lot at the final episodes, MEMORIES OF KONOE FUMINA BURSTED INTO MY MIND. ;_____;

Hecate: Much character development, and like she's pretty with earrings. She is like so hardcore, her attacks are like holy shit awesome, but her expressions include: expressionless face, Angry Face, confused face, sad face, and orgasm face. I happen to enjoy all of them, especially the last one. :heh: but she has like little screentime in this season, much to my disappointment...

Shana. She's simply great. Shana is a large part of what makes this show what it is, and she's been my utter favorite since her first appearance.
Wilhelmina. Another favorite from the first season, her style and grace is unprecedented in the second season as well.
Pheles. I really liked Pheles. She was full of surprises and awesomeness from beginning to end. Plus I've got a thing for green hair.


Yuji gets an honorable mention, he's pretty awesome, but these ladies are still a step ahead of him.

Shana - Well have to give her the vote here. But really has been a favourite in this show the whole way. Shows a lot of strength combined with her cuteness. Just has a likable personality and swords+fire just works.

Wilhelmina - Honestly grew on me a lot more in this second season. Really showed up in the fight against Sabrac and just how much she cares for Shana was really nice.

Other - Sabrac was pretty cool. Guy was focused on his work and does a pretty good job.

My top favorite characters in Shakugan no Shana:

1) Shana... same reason as other people...she is just UBER in all ways! She is the only non-annoying tsundre character i've seen in anime.
2) Alastor... Great voice, great mentor, never ceases to amaze me.
3) Wilhelmina... I hated her at first... but when I saw her caring attitude as a mother figure for Shana, it was just beautifull. My favorite episodes are when Wilhelmina fights Sabrac, too spectacular. Cold, but really nice, whit Tiamat around makes her even more special. Not to mention she is the most beautifull character in the show. ~De arimasu~ xD
4) Marcosius... just funny and wild.
5) Sabrac... coolest villain i've seen in years.

1) ive developed a liking for hecate ever since the first season, shes my favorite character again.. shes probably had the most character development out of all the characters from shana, and even though she got very little screen time, its great to see that shes slowly but surely becoming the central figure of bal masque.

Yuji Sakai- Well he doesn't have it in the first season but in the 2nd he was really a help to Shana. Anyway he seemed to be too innocent to notice the things that has been happening around him(Shana and Yoshida). It made him look a players but he doesn't even know it.

Shana-The character that made me watch the whole thing why wouldn't it be on the list. I like her personality and how she sees things.

Yoshida Kazumi-I disagree with others saying that Yoshida is a poor girl and has bad luck. In fact she isn't, Yuji chose her at the misagi festival rather than Shana(who cried a lot at the time) though knowing that stopping the Tomogara is much more important than

Another one is I think... The rainbow guy? the skeleton who trained Shana. Even though he only lasted for two episodes I think he is a really cool guy, I think his name was Merihim?

Kazumi - I feel bad for her that yuji picked shana and that she was rejected by ike, she is a sweet girl who just wants to help, she is so awsome :p The part where she tells yuji he is a human is one of my fave parts of the anime.

Fumina Konoe - I felt sad when her existence was taken away by hecate, but i was kinda hoping it would make hecate fall in love with yuji or something.

OK I will go against the conventional here and say.... I didn't like Shana (the character) because shes like Louise from Zero no Tsukaima (1st season) .... kinda annoying when they do nothing regarding their feelings....

Now to my fave characters:

Lets see...

Yuji: A great male protagonist. Although he started off as the "damisel in distress" has gradually earned my respect. He is smart, powerful, and not a wishy-washy guy. Although it was pretty close with Yoshida.

Shana: Need explanations? The girl has evolved since her early Flame Haze days. She found her heart and could quickly cope with her newly found feelings. Despite that, she is very proud and strong, a rare quality among anime females. And her Urusai, urusai, urusai, is one of the cutest things I've ever seen.

Alastor: Not much in the anime, more in the novels and the CD dramas, Alastor serves as a great comic relief. Above all his "paternal instinct" towards Shana, and his reluctance to let the unworthy mistes become her boyfriend made me laugh as hell. He is pretty powerful too being one of the two gods of the crimson realm.

Yoshida: She is not just the necesary rock in Shana's shoe. She has also developed a lot since the beginning. She confessed to someone prone to dissapear (She didn't know about the Reiji Maigo when she confessed, right?) She is very strong too, in a different way from Shana.

Besides in the Shana-tan I simply love her "I'm so going to kill her" quote.

Hmm, just HAD to rush through the series (in Chinese subs, no less) from Kansai Airport to KL Airport.

So after running through the two series, SnS and SnSII, I voted for:

Shana, that's for sure. Urusai, Urusai, Urusai! ['tis directed to those who have something against her]

Yuuji, although he starts off unawares (and right thru SnS Season 1), he's actually helpful later on, in SnSII. Really. And I remember from somewhere (the novels?) that he actually kidnapped Shana to Seireiden. I hope they have some hawt action in there. Seriously.

While I'm in this thread, I might as well weigh in on its topic. Aside from the usual suspects (Shana, Yuji, etc.), I must say I actually have something of a weakness for Hecate. I find her "purity" and her aloof yet quietly determined temperament rather appealing. It's also poignant that there's an emptiness within her that cries out to be filled. She just happens to be on the side of evil, of course, but still...

I've read that Hecate comes across very differently in the novels (which I haven't read aside from III), so maybe it's only anime-Hecate that I find appealing.

Do you all think that summoning Pheles with Yoshida using Giraida will save Yuji? Not quite. Remember that Pheles will prioritize on saving Johan. If a situation, which Johan can survive without saving Yuji, somehow occurs, why would Pheles want to save Yuji?

Besides that, although Pheles is a powerful Crimson Lord, I think that she cannot easily defeat the 3 Trinities such as Sydonay, Hecate and Bel Peol. Using Giraida is not a sure-win method, though.

^ I've never said Pheles has enough power to get everything done. But she can be one (possibly crucial) element that contributes to saving Yuji (if indeed he will be saved) and defeating the bad guys. Even though her motive may be to save Johan, Yuji may also end up being saved as a result. The defeat of evil will obviously be a team effort (and I'm saying that Pheles may be a part of that effort), even though Shana will (most likely) deliver the coup de grâce.

The author can use/manipulate the Shanaverse and make all sorts of scenarios possible (I just hope things won't get as convoluted as, say, Harry Potter VII). Of course Kazumi's hougu might be just a red herring, but my intuition tells me that Kazumi and Pheles have a (possibly crucial) role to play in the story's climactic plateau.

I see your point and I agree with you. Just then, I would like to highlight that Pheles is certainly selfish enough to deceive Kazumi into thinking Yuji can be saved by using Giraida. There is no guarantee that by summoning Pheles, she will try to save Yuji. I am all for Yuji and Shana to be together in the end, but I do not want to see Yoshida sacrificing herself for nothing.

I certainly don't deny Pheles's selfishness (though pre-Johan Pheles must've been a whole lot worse, judging from what Wilhelmina says). Aside from a scenario where saving Johan also saves Yuji (by setting up some kind of Shanaverse condition that one cannot be saved without the other), another possibility is that Shana (and others) will ensure that Yuji will be saved by somehow keeping Pheles in line while saving Johan.

[Incidentally, I've always found it wonderfully symbolic that Yuji carries a benevolent being and a malevolent being within him. I wonder if the author intends to make something of this, such as some kind of symbolic conflict between the two, or by underlining that both have to be somehow expelled from Yuji for things to work out.]

Also, if Kazumi's death by using the hougu (unless a Disney death or some convoluted plot point/trope/whatever ends up sparing her life) contributes to Yuji's salvation and being with Shana in the end, I wouldn't regard it as a sacrifice for nothing. IMHO it would be much like, say, Goethe's Egmont, Leroux's Erik, or (in a way) Romeo and Juliet -- a posthumous triumph of the spirit. It's certainly a noble enough way to go, methinks.

Yes, I feel the same way. The author always has interesting storyline to keep us excited for more. I think you also noticed that Yuji has the strongest malevolent being, whereas Shana is contracted to the strongest benevolent being, Alastor. It does serve as a strong contrast, similar to the one you just mentioned.

Let's assume that Yoshida does sacrifice herself at the Episode 24 of the second season of the series. When Pheles is being summoned, she will probably say :"Thank you, Hecate for doing the hard work of extracting Reiji Maigo from Yuji". She then takes the Reiji Maigo and releases Johan. And, off they go without saving Yuji. If that happens, that is I mean by Yoshida sacrificing herself for nothing.
