What good timing - I'm watching Flashback 2012 right now. I think that there are a number of worthy candidates out there. "Silver Moon - Red Moon" is one of those; another favorite is the sheer energy of "Zero-G Love". Still my favorite isn't really a Minmei song at all since she doesn't sing it in-character in either Flashback 2012 or SDF Macross, and that is the Iijima Mari version of "Runner". Of the different versions, I like the the Flashback 2012 one the most with Iijima Mari and Fujiwara Makoto because the male and female combo is an extremely complementary style, and their voices really suit one another.

yeah, all the old ones were so full of GAR.
while i have no complaints for songs by modern bands like L'arc'ciel, i still find GAR-songs like those from JAM project (does all the SUPER ROBOT WAR themes) the best.
Hearing the Macross theme just pure nostalgic.
:)
thinknig about it, i wish they put a GAR song for Macross. nothing against Mayaa Sakamoto, love her songs but i felt perhaps a male GAR song would make my manly heart go full GAR power.

I think it's actually a nice touch, and in a way it touches Ozma being a bit older than the rest of the kids (30s or late 20s?). For him, Fire Bomber was probably the big thing when he was younger so he naturally still listens to them probably. Sharon Apple may be a bit too old though, and besides, they may want to surpress a bit of her popularity given the nature of her umm demise, and what that crazy AI tried to do heh.

Just out of curiosity..
talking over with a friend of mine about the duet singing near the end ed of the 2nd ep...and we were wondering if the VA's did their own singing there, or not
I'm assuming Lanca/Megumi Nakajima, is doing her own singing...
does anyone know whos doing Sheryl's singing? is it Aya Endo, or someone totally different? (and also while i;m at it, her other songs)
Aya Endo is just the talking voice for Sheryl, the singer behind Sheryl is May'n.

I really enjoyed Ranka's song from the end of ep. 3 -- I prefer this version to the one in the ending theme of the first ep. It reminds me a bit of "Aoi Hitomi," another Yoko Kanno song (from Escaflowne). A Gabriela Robin Site (http://gabrielarobin.com/) suggests it's a mix of Japanese and non-Japanese, which sounds about right to me (especially since this is Yoko Kanno). Has anyone come by romanized lyrics or a translation for the Japanese parts?

personally, i think the lyrics resemble more to "Galaxy" by Alice Holiday, who was incidentally another (correct me if i'm mistaken) self-labelled "Galaxy Fairy" and who was a personal idol of Mylene Jenius.
I see Yoko Kanno is at it again with her own language. I look forward to hearing a nice full version of Ranka's song.
Though personally i like the instrumental version a lot more.

not to mention that other macross songs are starting to grow in me also.
The Diamond Crevasse/Don't Be Late cd single comes out 8th of May. We get Trinagler this month, Diamond Crevasse/Don't Be Late next month and the first OST (probably have Ranka Lee's Aimo *crosses fingers for episode 3 version*) the month after. Month after... OP 2 perhaps...

Well so far I have yet to be able to complete two full listenings of the opening song as I find it to be that unpleasant to listen too. I completed one listen so I can say I gave it a chance and have the reference point for it's composition committed to memory to call up should the need somehow arise, but wow if that isn't one of the most unpleasant songs I've heard in a while.
I do like the first and second ending themes however, especially the second one Diamond Crevasse. It's a nice quite song at the end of an episode.
Seriously though, they've got to do something about that first opening and I'm holding out for a second one to come along and replace it at the halfway point.

http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2008-04-30/sakamoto-kanno-macross-frontier-song-rises-to-no.3
Maaya Sakamoto's "Triangler" opening theme song for the Macross Frontier anime series rose to #3 on Oricon's sales chart for all Japanese singles last week. It was the first time that one of Sakamoto's songs has reached the top three on the weekly singles chart. The single, which was composed and arranged by Yoko Kanno (Cowboy Bebop, Escaflowne, Macross Plus), sold 31,270 copies so far. It actually reached #2 on the daily singles chart on both April 25 and April 26. Sakamoto had previously sang themes for Escaflowne, Card Captor Sakura, Wolf's Rain, and several other anime titles.
Will be interesting to see how the Sheryl and Ranka cd singles compare to this in sales.

The difference is so marked that I'm actually wondering if the Sheryl version is deliberately mis-produced in order to make Ranka sound even better than she is. I mean really, the Sheryl version is just kind of a mess, and Mayn can sing better than that (see: Long Long Goodbye), whereas the Ranka version is a bit blandly pop, but it's still properly produced and the fact that she can sing helps a good deal.

No, it just seems like the Cheryl version is in the Yoko Kanno "Macross Plus" vein of songs. It sounded like a Sharon Apple song. Ranka's, on the other hand, was more Macross 7 Fire Bomber! :D
The Ranka version is better but mainly because of the live vibe to it with the different instruments and the crowd clapping just added to that greatly. Switch the vocalists (they would obviously sing differently with the situations reversed) and I doubt it would change my opinion in that the Formo version is better. Ranka version is like a 5/5 while Sheryl is a 4/5 just off what I've heard in the anime.. who knows the full vesions from the OST might make me like the Sheryl version better. I really dig the Sharon Apple type vibe in that song..
I can't stop to listen the music "Don't be late" Hehe a good Music video. :D

I'm also puzzled, if Sheryl has an Animu Spiritia we the viewer will see it, because everyone has animu spiritia, but only strong animu spiritia can be seen without amplification, unlike with normal people, where it will make it visible, but it won't have much affect.
I wonder if it depends on the type of song they sing?
Either way, i like them both. although Ranka version just ooze enthusiasm, while sheryl is so sultry.
it's good.
:)
It will be interesting to see what kind of direction Ranka takes with her music when she turns pro (and all signs point to this as the next step). I wonder what her influences are. Obviously, Minmay is an influence, but I think Fire Bomber could be one, too, given Ozma's apparent penchant for the group (he played it in his car) and her Fire Bomber-tinged version of "What bout my Star."
I don't think you can base her version of what bout my star in episode 5 as her future direction, all she did was sing, everything else was an impromptu performance by Deculture loving Zentradis. Aimo is the best thing to go off atm...

In Macross 7 only Nekki Basara is the only one with the light and shockwave effects when facing a Protodevlin. Without equipment.
Song energy only became visually obvious because of the feedback equipment developed by Dr. Chiba which somehow exploits fold physics.
Which somehow explains how Emilia Jenius was heard far away from Macross 7.

While Sheryl follows more current music styles similar to Yoko Kanno's electronics style from MacPlus, almost all of Sheryl's songs so far has the similar beat.
I like both of them, however the more I listened to Ranka reminds me more of Mylene singing. Slow and soft while Sheryl is more similar to Emiriya and Basara, fast pace and louder singing.
Just the 1st 10 secs of the acoustic part of Don't be Late reminds me of Planet Dance from Fire Bomber.
Awesome music as always from Macross series.
Does a full length version of Minmei singing Runner exist anywhere? The Complete Macross Collection only has the tv length version but during Max's wedding, she was singing verses that aren't in the tv version so there has to be a full length version SOMEWHERE out there right?
I'm interested in that as well. I'd prefer the full duet version with Iijima Mari and Fujiwara Makoto that was in the ending of Flashback 2012, but a full-length Minmei one would be awfully cool as well. It'd make it a lot easier to decide which audio CDs to get.

Too bad, no full length version of Runner ~Minmay ver. as far as i know. Same goes to the duet version of Runner.
*checked all of my old Macross cds.
Besides the Complete Collection, you also can find the shorter version of Runner ~Minmei ver. in these 2 albums:

Triangler has staying power and Diamond Crevasse looks like it will chart high as well.
"Triangler," Maaya Sakamoto's opening theme song for the ongoing Macross Frontier space opera television anime, has stayed on Oricon's weekly top-10 chart for all Japanese singles for a second week. A week after its April 23 debut at #2, "Triangler" now stands at #6. The ending theme "Diamond Crevasse" officially launches on May 8, but it already ranks at #2 on Oricon's daily singles chart for May 6. May'n sings "Diamond Crevasse" as the fictional idol singer Sheryl Nome. Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell) composed and arranged both songs.

Artists can be quite silly with their song names at times. I've always thought that "Long Long Goodbye" is a better title for that song, though.

Right before the OP seqeunce of episode 6 Sheryl is pratisicng her dance moves to the beat of something we haven't heard before.. I'm guessing this will be played in episode 7 and is probably track 2 on the OST
Welcome To My FanClub’s Night! (Sheryl On Stage)

Maybe it's just me, but it really sounded like an instrumental version of Sagittarius-9:00-Don't Be Late (I'm still hoping there are more insert songs in the pipeline :)).
Now that you mention it.. it does sound similar to Don't Be Late.. but it's more like a remixed version than just an instrumental.

Yes, it's some kind of techno beat club version of Don't Be Late.

Wah, freshly excited from watching the first few episodes! This is such a great looking anime! And am definitely looking forward to the music. Had a mini heart attack when FireBomber was played in the car ^_^
I don't feel a thing for 'Triangular' nor that 1st concert song Sheryl did, but am liking 'Diamond Crevasse' more. But the tune I'm listening to on repeat is Nakajima Megumi's version of 'Ai Oboete Imasu ka' that was the ED for the preview ep - I love it! V nice updated version, and like previous posters have said, v reminiscent of Mylene ^_^

Certainly Basara would love a duet with Sheryl if he's still around. He's always try to get Mylene to put more emotions and heart into her singing and it just ain't there.
Sheryl's singing definitely have that Basara's emotive force in the voice. Where as Ranka is just your normal Idol singer, Sheryl is a diva.

Oh yeah, even if you focus on the singing and ignore the dramatic scenes during the last part of episode 6, it's quite noticeable that Sheryl pours her emotions in "Diamond Crevasse."
And I got the Mylene vibes from Ranka in her version of "What 'Bout my Star" in episode 5, especially that "camera pan" before the Minmei poses where her face was beaming and the wind was swaying her skirt. Pure cuteness.
On a side note, I thought the music that played during the launch of NUNS scouts in Episode 6 reminded me of a slower and slightly re-arranged version of the Pirates of the Caribbean theme song, heh

not really. all those pirates were really Americans. So it's not technically British. (we wear red coats you know)
Which is probably why Johnny Depp fit the role perfectly with that horrendous accent.

But to steer things back on topic, We need more songs here.
Just having ONE ost album isn't enough, i hope they bring out another Ed, dunno about opening.

Here's a blog and snipets of May'n Live on 5/9 at a Japanese train station, singing the 3 songs from Macross F.
Not very good quality but not bad, she can blow.

Dnn't Be Late debuts @ #3, Triangler stays at #6 for the second week in a row.
Two Macross Frontier theme songs ranked in Oricon's weekly top 10 chart for all Japanese singles last week. The CD single for May'n's "Diamond Crevasse" ending theme debuted at #3, while Maaya Sakamoto's "Triangler" opening theme stayed at #6. Sakamoto's song also debuted at #3 when it launched three weeks ago. Yoko Kanno (Macross Plus, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost in the Shell) composed and arranged both songs for this space opera sequel in the Macross franchise. At #2 was "Niji" ("Rainbow"), the theme song that Aqua Timez (Bleach, Brave Story) performed for the most recent live-action television series based on the Gokusen manga.
Don't Be Late had opening week sales of 42,714 which is better than Trianglers opening week of 31,250. Triangler did 12,550 in its second week and 12886 in the third bringing it to a grand total of 56,686. This makes Triangler her second best selling cd single since it surpassed "Hemisphere" (her best intro song imo...) which sold 54,460 copies. It should surpass "Kiseki no Umi" which is her best selling single with 66,340 units sold. The Macross brand name is still very strong..
Also looking at jpopmusic.com I read this about May Nakabayashi aka May'n.
From what I gather, she was chosen out of 34,911 people at an audition held by HoriPro and debuted in 2005.
Will be interesting to see how Ranka's single compares to the sales of these two.. if it isn't for the second opening I have a pretty decent idea what the cd single is going to be... if you're curious read the spoilers I posted from Macross World for episode 10 in the speculation & spoilers thread.
Dnn't Be Late debuts @ #3, Triangler stays at #6 for the second week in a row.
It looks like the Macross Frontier music is seeing the Gundam Seed/Seed Destiny effect. Anime music as a rule doesn't sell particularly well, but the music attached to those shows consistently debuted in the top 1-2 in sales. It looks like the Macross music isn't quite as successful, but Triangler being Sakamoto Maaya's best-selling single ever is certainly nothing to sneeze at.
In other news, I'm awfully impressed with the volume and quality coming out of Macross Frontier. In just the first few episodes, there's enough for an OST and three singles without counting all the remixes they can pump out.
I know that it's a bit of a joke that SDF Macross had only one song, and that Macross 7 only had three songs, but they each had a fair amount of music. However, Macross Frontier is already encroaching on their volume, and we're only a quarter of the way in.
Don't Be Late actually debuted 2nd place on Oricon, pretty impressive, if you ask me.
But don't forget, Macross 1982 was the pioneer in bringing anime music to regular popular music charts. It pretty much single-handedly paved the road for anime music that wish to follow the same path in the years to come.
- Tak
Nah it was #3, that Niji song by Aquatimez was #2 with 50k+ and Summertime sold like over 200k.
Macross World poster paper2k1 mentioned that the name of the Ranka Lee single got revealed on the Nakajima Megumi official Blog. It's called Interstellar Flight.

What's the title of the new song that Ranka and Sheryl duet together in episode 7?
Infinity, as per credits.

It's the second last track on the ost, another stellar song from Sheryl!

I just want Ai Oboete Imasu ka, Deculture version ^_^
The Nyan-Nyan song is still my favorite from all of Macross... >_> Yeah... I liked Haruhi's ED more than any other ED, OP, or OST for any anime. But anyhow, if we're talking non-sing&dance tunes...
Back to the talk about how Ranka sounds better and more professional than Sheryl (or at least I think that's what has been said in the past pages) or just all around more emotional... You have to remember, Sheryl is the idol of this anime and she's likely been performing for years and years, doing hundreds upon hundreds of concerts. You can't sing the same song over and over again with the same love for it you may of had the first time you sang it perfectly, and have the same emotions portrayed every time. Where as Ranka has only started singing in the past couple of weeks for people, so she has a pop flare and all this pent up emotion from NOT singing for people at all. That's just my theory, but it's not one that isn't extremely possible. Even I can only sing a song about Drunken Sailors so many times before it isn't funny to think about drunken sailors being thrown and pulled everywhere to, "sober up." There's my two-bits.
(But no, the music in Macross Frontier is really well done and 'Don't Be Late' and 'What 'bout My Star?' are especially fun tunes. Nyan-Nyan isn't the only one I love... <_<)
Speaking of Nyan Nyan song...I seriously was annoyed by it when Ranka sang it until they showed the actual commercial. But this guy cracked me up.:heh:

The second song is cute. Finally, a Better song from Ranka. It gets better the more you listen to it. It can work for either OP and ED to me. It makes a cute, funny contrast to the mecha theme IF they made it the 2nd OP or leaves you with an upbeat feeling of the episode for an ED theme. If I were to pick, I'd like it better for an ED theme. It would be a nice change from all the depressing songs so far. Plus, I don't think everyone will like their badass Macross Frontier having a cutesy lovelove OP:heh:
And I doubt this is 'the' Ranka song. I'm thinking if this is it, then why aren't they promoting this the way they did Diamond Crevasse. I'd expect Ranka's final song to showcase what made Megumi Nakajima win from a Nationwide audition. My expectations are a little high, I hope I won't get disappointed.
No way this should be the second OP, should be something in the vein of the RahXephon or the Aquarion OP. Triangler as the OP over Don't Be Late was a bad enough miss in the first place and I'm sure we'll get a few more OP worthy songs in the second half.
And I doubt this is 'the' Ranka song. I'm thinking if this is it, then why aren't they promoting this the way they did Diamond Crevasse.
Well DC only got that massive amount of promotion in episode 6 because the cd single came out that week, the cd single for Interstellar Flight comes out in like 4 weeks or so. I expect it will get a concert performance in the episode that airs in the same week it comes out as well as ending up as the new op or ed.
Between Aimo (for plot reasons) and Interstellar Flight (cd single/her first hit in the show) I really don't see her getting another "big" song, a DYRL so to say. Perhaps the DYRL of this series will be a duet between her and Sheryl.
EDIT
Found the current oricon sales figures for cd singles released this year, both Frontier singles are placed in the top 50 for 2008.
42 *,*75,026 *12,630 Don't be late starring May'n 08/05/08
44 *,*72,024 **6,350 08/04/23
Don't Be Late is still hanging around the 8-15 mark on the daily charts, guess it will finish up at around 90-95k while Triangler finishes at around 80k.

I think Neko Nikki will fit the best as the 2nd ending
Im also betting that "Aimo Tori no Hito" is going to be the insert song for ep10 since ranka suppose to sing the theme song for "legend of zero" and this is the closest song i can see that can fit into the theme
Wow, Sheryl’s "Welcome to my Fanclub’s Night" sounds awesome (I expected something silly due to the title). I wonder if they'll make it fit in another concert.
Neko nikki is cute but underwhelming...

The Aimo bird man version imo is much better than the original version and is easily my favorite Ranka Lee song. Sheryl’s Welcome to my Fanclub’s Night is potentially my fav song from Frontier so far, I like how it reuses some samples from the Sousei no Aquarion OP which is one of my fav anime ops period. Really looking forward to hearing both of these used in the show.

Actually it seems the 2nd OP is not by Megumi, it's a May'n & Megumi duet. They seem to be really pushing May'n, makes one wonder if the Sheryl character was in place when they did the talent search that unearthed Megumi Nakajima.
Catalog No.: VTCL-35033
Release Date: August 6, 2008
Price: 1155 yen (approx. 10.97 USD)
Song list:
1. Lion (2nd Opening Theme)
Vocals: May’n, Megumi Nakajima
2. Northern Cross (2nd Ending Theme)
Vocals: May’n
Seriously Lion better be incredible because Welcome To My Fan Club Night would make an incredible OP, that song is so epic, best song so far in Frontier.
So it will be a duet. Interesting. Haven't heard Welcome to My Fanclub yet, but it looks like Sheryl will and always will be the idol of this show. Just looking at all these great OST songs given to her, whoever said she doesn't have an even importance compared to Ranka lol Sad to say, but I have yet to hear a song from Ranka that would prove otherwise if the producers are really planning to dethrone Sheryl from her icon status. May'n is even starting to win me.

From how I see it, they purposely made Sheryl and Ranka mirror their VA in terms of their music careers. Sheryl's VA is as professional as she is, and Ranka's is as amateur as she's supposed to be. I actually liked how they did the casting. In some sense, it's realistic.

I'd have to say my favorite Ranka song so far is Aimo. Very wistful, and it showcases her voice in ways that the other, more pop-based, songs don't, especially the unrestrained, unforced sound I hear in it.

Nakajima's doing fantastic for a newbie, IMO - again, I'm a fan of her voice for the fact it does'nt sound overly polished and professional, which fits the character rather well. Going from Aya Endou to May'n for the singing feels a bit odd, but given Sheryl's pop style, makes her quite suitable. Of course, I remember some of the stuff in the karaoke box in the Lucky Star ED's, so I have to think that Aya Endou could do at least ONE song herself... but that's not to be.

The Bird man version of Aimo is vastly superior to Voices lite imo.
Macross + Yoko Kanno = you just KNOW it's gonna be good
I've been impressed by all the songs and I hope additional soundtracks are released.
I could easily get away with saying the first soundtrack sees the return of classic Yoko Kanno. This is what i want to hear from someone as amazing as her. It's a lot like her Turn A Gundam score, with a hint of Macross Plus for the battle themes.

So are the insert songs on the OST or are they coming out in a separate album?
All the insert songs used so far + 2 unused ones (which imo are the best from both artists) are on the ost. As far as bgms go Tally Ho (The Frontier equivalent to Macross Plus Dog Fight?), Take Off and The Target are awesome.

Loved the first OST.
As for the content, if you like Kanno this one's for you. I've pretty much heard it through without skipping any single one of the tracks. This might be my favorite Yoko Kanno album after Escaflowne and Cowboy Bebop (tied for my all-time favorite Kanno album). Loved the idea and presentation of the Sheryl songs, it's like having another album.
As many have already pointed out, there's still ample material to be covered by a second or third soundtrack release.
Favorite instrumental tracks:
-Innocent Green (Track 9) [I hope they don't overuse this track; the scene from 'Stardate' in which this first played was so damn good]
-Alto's Theme (Track 16)
-Private Army (12)
-The Target (18)
-Kira Kira (20) [Another nice track from 'Stardate' when Alto and Sheryl took the skytrain. Here's hoping that there will another outstanding episode that will even top that one in the new music department]
Here's my favs.
Top 5 Vocal Tracks imo are
Welcome to my fanclubs night!
Don't Be Late
Aimo ~ Tori no Hito
What bout my star @ folmo
Diamond Crevesse
Top 5 BGM Tracks imo are
The Target (This is "the" battle theme of the series)
Tally Ho (Hasn't been used yet, feels like it's the Frontier version of M+'s Dogfight)
Take Off (Was played when Alto launched in his ex-gear in episode 1 and when he attacked the Varja at the start of 2)
Innocent Green (When Sheryl kisses Alto on the cheek in episode 5, has a lot left that hasn't been played.. I hope this is the Sheryl and Alto "romance" theme")
Vital Force (Hasn't been played, reminds me of another M+ bgm)
Halfway through the OST and the only thing that really stood out was how bad What 'bout My Star - Sheryl on Stage is, but then the What 'bout My Star - Formo version makes up for it. The duet is what made the song from 'good' to 'great!'.
Great OST overall. I'm loving track 8 which is What 'bout my star? @Formo.
By the way, does anyone have the correct tag names for the artist name and song titles? I have a feeling nipponsei's release is incorrectly tagged.

Is anyone actually planning to pick it up instead of leeching off the net?
I'm picking up mine as I have owned almost all of Macross soundtracks, all originals from Japan, not the SM bootlegs.
Mine hsn't shipped yet, but I'm getting (had it ordered for a bit now). I just download them to save myself the job of ripping it myself XD
I can't stop listening to Infinity.
I'll probably pick up a copy when I'm in Japan next week :)

Waiting for it to arrive, should take a few more days though i couldn't wait that long, so i'm previewing.

Definitely importing if I can't get locally from some of the stores which specialize in this sorta thing. It's Macross, and it has pop AND some nice BGMs. Kira Kira makes me think of 'Final Fantasy' for some reason... probably due to the fact I've probably listened to the piano collections for FF too many times. :P

I really like the Infinity song, the one where they battled it out in space.
A shame the Deculture version of Ep1 ED wasn't on the OST.
I was really looking forward to that.

Like nearly all of the music in this bloody series are good. I think it's what makes a lot of good series good -- good music along with good timing. Macross seems to execute them both, making me forget about my frustrations that arise at time while watching episodes.
I can't believe all these songs came from Yoko Kanno's head. She's too awesome. :|
Out of all the songs, the one that I ended up listening to over and over again was "What 'bout my Star@Formo" lol The duet was perfect. But I just gotta say, "What 'bout my Star" shines best with Megumi's voice. ^__^ I liked this song way better than Aimo.
Welcome to My FanClub's Night didn't really impress me as much compared to other people. I think Infinity's better and much more of an OP theme material. Macross Frontier and its cast are going to be even more popular. This soundtrack is probably selling like hotcakes now.

Really love the BGM, never a boring moment when listening to this from start to finish. I love the SMS theme for being a potential drinking song and Zero Hour really reminded me of the following theme, a big part of my childhood.
KIq5x8-QL-o
The medley of Sheryl song's were really well done, to tie them together. The crowd clapping and the bass beats were really mixed in well at the start of What 'Bout My Star.

It would be awesome if we got a 20-30 minute Sheryl concert included with the last volume of Frontier as a bonus. These 3 songs, Infinity, Diamond Crevasse, Lion, Northern Cross and whatever else she does in the second half of the series.
And that concert medley really added to the original version of What 'Bout My Star, still isn't anywhere near as good as the two songs it was in between though.
and Zero Hour really reminded me of the following theme, a big part of my childhood.
Must say i'm glad i'm not the only one that was reminded of the Top Gun theme. Nice one Kanno.

Am I the only one who finds this first OST kind of meh? I mean it's listenable at all, but it's not even close to the greatest OST of the year or anything like that. Just because it's Yoko Kanno doesn't automatically make it great to me and it really seems like she's just phoning this one in. That I know for a fact I won't remember a single track from this even a year from now drives home the idea that this just isn't her best work.

I listened to the entire OST for a whole day and only few words can describe it: AMAZING and LEGENDARY!
I listened to all the new tracks sung by Sheryl and Ranka, and none is par at all: they are great! Especially Sheryl's version of "What 'Bout my Star?", I think this one can pulverize the Oricon charts single-handedly if you asked me.
For the other songs (Aimo, Aimo 2nd version, Infinity, etc.), they are just a joy to listen again and again.
For the BGM tracks, this is top quality. I must admit I've been waiting for so long to have Yoko Kanno at her best like that since the days of Macross Plus, Escaflowne and Bebop; now I can say the wait is over. :D Zero Hour also reminded me of the Top Gun anthem as others mentioned it. Vital Force, Tally Ho, Vajra and Take Off reminded me of the best in Macross Plus while Innocent Green reminded me straight away of the love themes and songs from Escaflowne (especially Into the Light). However, the best of the BGM tracks was no doubt The Target: power, suspense, action, and drama in one single track. I can loop this one for hours if I want to. ;)
I can't wait for the other OSTs.
I'm pretty disappointed that the OST doesn't have the musical piece that's used in the 'preview for the next episode' scene and more importantly where the hell is Ranka's version of "My boyfriend is a pilot" :(

Cheer up! This ain't over yet! I'm pretty sure all the other songs and cues will come out in next OSTs and we can be sure there would be 3 or 4 OSTs total.

I agree with you on some levels. I'm loving the first OST, and it's defiantly the kind of music i've wanted to hear again from Yoko Kanno, though she hasn't reached the level she was once at with some of her past works (which we have talked about before). It's a good score, and i like many tracks from it --- it just could have been much better.
That I know for a fact I won't remember a single track from this even a year from now drives home the idea that this just isn't her best work.
Still to this day you can find me radomly humming tracks from her Escaflowne, Macross Plus & Turn A Gundam score. Like to say one day that i'll be doing to same with this one.

Mainly this release isn't a proper OST release. Typically you have the BGM and Songs separated, this one is a combo. So, there are some rushed BGM tunes with the popular songs people recognize.
You will have to wait for future OST releases to complete all the tunes you hear and like.
Like many Macross 7 CDs that I've owned, 1-2 rare tracks in there just to make you buy them while filling the rest with dup tracks.
Still, for a relatively new anime, the 1st OST came out much faster than other animes I can think of..
Compare this with 00 Gundam, 1 bland OST after 20+ episode released, of course with Gundam, they will rehash many different releases such as a symphony based, then Best of, Best of Best of..

For me the vocals just kinda dwarfed the bgm tracks, I must have listened to Infinity like a hundred times. I only wish my postal service in my area didn't suck out loud since it is likely that I won't get my copy until like almost aweek after everyone else :heh::heh:

If anyone's interested I just hit up a full review of the OST. (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2008/06/04/macross-frontier-ost-review/)
Yes overall I felt it was about a 7.5/10 on the overall scale, which is somewhere between good and very good. I found myself liking the Megumi Nakajima songs and the orchestral pieces while not so much liking the May n' (or whatever her name is) and more synthesized sounding bits. Maybe the next OST will offer something a little more powerful and worth of all time greatness, but somehow I doubt it. It takes a lot for me to consider an OST an all time fave, and Macross Frontier's just isn't shaping up like that.

Names when it comes to OST's don't mean a lot to me, except for Yuki Kajuira (but that has more to do with the fact she tends to make songs/tunes I like a lot than her name so she stands out for me), but even then if I don't like a song, I don't like a song. It doesn't matter who did it. But I do love the songs on this OST. Butwhen it comes to BGM it has to be a really stand out tune for it to make my playlist since I'm not the biggest BGM person. There are a couple of there I'll happily listen to over and over, but that's it. But that's what I normally find with OST's with my preference for songs.
Kaoishin I kinda get a chuckle when I saw your rating for Don't Be Late, I remember you didn't really like it at first and couldn't see it as an OP at all... it would've been a far superior op to Triangler too :(
And Tally Ho to me comes across as this series equivalent of Dogfight, in that it's a really dynamic battle track... and I bet it will be used for a Alto/Brera fight. Vital Force has a more dogfight sound to it imo with those drums... I kept thinking the part in Dogfight after those drums is going to kick in :heh:
And this isn't Yoko Kanno phoning it in, that would be Darker Than Black OST 1. This is probably the closest she's been to capturing her mid to late nineties sound this decade.
How can we be sure of that? The series is only going to be 25 episodes. I'll be surprised if we see enough Yoko Kanno material that'll push it to 3 soundtracks.
Macross Plus had 2 OSTS & a For Fans Only album and that was off 4x45 minute OVA episodes. Escaflowne had 4 osts.. I'll be shocked if we don't hit 3 or 4 osts with Frontier.. the second half is going to have the following vocal songs in Interstellar Flight, Lion and Northern Cross. There's plenty of bgms that didn't get put in from the first 9 episodes, a few off the top is the music that plays when Sheryl talks to Alto about Galaxy, the break beat panty theft chase one, next episode preview, the music that plays when Michael tries to chat up Grace.
And should be a lot of new bgms from 10-25 to use anyway, in addition to using the ones on the OST we haven't heard yet like Vital Force, Zero Hour and Tally Ho.

Well intially I wasn't going to do anything like this, but I was sort of prompted to when I realized every review I was seeing for it on animeblogger seemed more like grovelling fanboyism rather than an actual review. They all started the same with singing songs of praise about Yoko Kanno and finished with them saying that is was one of the best OST's they'd ever heard in there lives, and I was just like "No way.....there's gotta be some leeway for criticism even if it is a solid if passable OST". As usual I try to fill the void with something a little different while trying to be as fair as I can.
Hmm, I love Aimo and Yoko's coglangs. More often than not, the melody accompanying the coglangs are quite nice, but there are exceptions, such as the torch song from Mac Plus.
Maybe thats just me, but coglangs fit the Macross universe quite nicely. After all, the Zents do have their own language.

*Whistles quietely* Oh hey, how'd that get there. :heh: (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2008/03/31/eushully-presents-2008-a-retrospective/)
And I didn't know anyone else knew who/what Eushully was. Drop the name key or Type-Moon and everybody will be all like "Yeah yeah, the Visual Novel makers", but drop the name Eushully and :confused:
Yeah, that's what I might say if it wasn't just the fact that it's Yoko Kanno. She does this kind of thing all the time. Besides Zentran sounds more like what you here in this:
IW2JsPlOreA
Well, personally, I cannot imagine anyone singing with the Zentran language. Its just... not right for singing... (not even when women are speaking it)
Which reminds me. Anyone seen Orguss II? Notice how they talk ;)
Speaking of Eushully, my favorite company in general is Illusion (hands down). Besides them, I also like (and not ashamed to admit it) Active, 13cm, MBS Truth, Marin, Clockup, Bluegale, Lune, Tinkerbell, Kaguya, Bishop, Crossnet-Pie, and of course Eushully.
Yeah, there are more, but I cannot recall many with their own set of production staff and designated artists. The companies I listed however, do have their own set of production staff and artists.
Of course, the funny thing is when you also recognize several main-stream VAs when you play them. Such as Soichiro Hoshi, who went to voice for the popular Muv-Luv series from Age.

First day sales for the OST.. is 10304 copies and it places #2 on the daily albums chart.
http://www.oricon.co.jp/rank/ja/d/
Apparently her previous highest ranking on the Oricon album charts was #44 for her CMYoko, though still waiting for confirmation on that.
Triangler = 75k
Diamond Crevasse/Don't Be Late = 82.5k
OST = 10k in one day.
Macross brand is still strong, Interstellar Flight should sell well and I expect the same for the 2nd op/ed single as well as OST 2.

Need you to help me out here in interpreting these numbers. Are the good, medicore, poor? How do they compare against other OSTs and singles?
Diamond Crevasse/Don't Be Late and Triangler are in the top 50 sellings singles for the year, I think Triangler was #44 and Diamond Crevasse/Don't Be Late was #42... but Diamond Crevasse/Don't Be Late should now be in the high 30's.
So yeah they are selling well, Triangler for instance is the highest selling cd single Maaya Sakamoto has released, her previous highs being the record of lodoss war op (66k) and Hemisphere (my personal fav anime op period) from RahXephon (54k). And May'ns single is going to outsell this (as it should, both songs are way better than Triangler) by the time it stops selling...
For an anime this is selling very well, especially since it's made for the show and isn't some popular band releasing their next single and using it as an OP to get some extra sales... like the first Gundam 00 opening. Though Orange Range's Code Geasss R2 OP is selling a lot more than their previous singles, though still a long way away from what they use to sell.

As you can see it will be hard for Frontier to place in the top 50, but I doubt any other anime ost will come close to it's sales, except maybe Evangelion Movie ost... which I should look up.
If a Yoko Kanno score is great or not mostly depends on her "inspirational" material. For "The Target" credit should be given to David Arnold's "Independence Day." Of course there's also the "nod" to Hans Zimmer's "Pirates of the Caribbean" theme in "Big Boys" and at the end of "Tally Ho!". At least these two are blatantly obvious.

That depresses the heck out of me considering that Yakosoku Wa Iranai and Hemisphere are actually great songs (first being my all time favourite anime opening) while Triangler is just....ugh!
The sales for Triangler probably have to do more with Macross than Maaya Sakamoto. Because Yoko Kanno, Maaya Sakamoto, May'n are setting career highs right now, I doubt Megumi will top whatever she sets with Interstellar Flight as well, in a non Macross Frnotier project anyway.
Sorta like how Nami Tamaki's 3 Gundam SEED songs all sold fantastic but everything else she did was nowhere near as high in sales.

Just a quick post before I do a full on review of the OST, since it seems everyone is discussing their thoughts on it...
Generally for me I note that the songs that stick out to me are the ones that I find myself humming to throughout the day. Which have been Big Boys and Private Army :p
Then again I always was a sucker for mariachi guitar... Especially when Ace Combat Zero showed up :p :heh:
But it seems that the near-unanimous feeling is that Diamond Crevasse is fuck wins. I'd have to agree, it is. Though regards the SMS song, IMO it's just a lulz song, not meant to be SRS business. :D
Though... to be honest, listening to an OST while not watching the scene the BGM is tied to kinda weakens the power of the song; IMO the BGMs are keyed to specific scenes, which is where they get their power from. Take the Imperial March; hear it on it's own and it's just John WIlliams music. Watch when it's in use and you go "VADER/EMPIRE". Or Danger Zone; it's not really that great, all in all, about 7.5/10 IMO, but it's when it's paired with Top Gun that it becomes truly awesome.
Just listening to the BGMs on their own, the BGMs are weakened, as the impact they try to convey is lessened due to seperation from the scene they were melded with; the BGMs support the scene, so without the scene their power is inherently weakened. It's why Viral's Theme is considered so awesome, or how Libera Me From Hell is also considered great win: because both BGMs accompany memorable scenes.
...ugh basically BGMs by themselves are inherently weakened when listenened to.
...okay I have no idea how I got this far from "I like Big Boys and Private Army", IS: Disrupted Tangent musta been set to passive mode.
...ugh basically BGMs by themselves are inherently weakened when listenened to.
Eh, no no, uh un, nope. Imperial March from Star Wars, anyone? ;)
On the other hand, I have to agree, Triangular is one of the worst OP I've ever heard in a long, long time. I mean, it is not bad, but it is very, very bland.
And this is coming from Yoko. How could that be! I don't believe!

Well I thoroughly enjoyed this OST :)
I though some of the songs were more amazing than others but overall it was pretty pleasing to listen to.
Aimo still wins it for me and I still want to burn the carrot song from my brain though (at least the image that associates with it anyway:p).

Eh, no no, uh un, nope. Imperial March from Star Wars, anyone? ;)
You've proven my point, Tak. The Imperial March works because we have the strong connections to the movies; everyone knows it and knows what it means. But to someone who hasn't seen Star Wars, they'd go, "Meh, okay, what's so special about it?" Likewise Sorairo Days, which generally speaking is rather meh as an anime song, and not really that awesome. Then you get to episode 27 of Gurren Lagann, as first Rasengan Overlord and then Tengan Toppa Gurren Lagann embark on a 4-minute epic smackdown.
Watched on their own, the songs aren't as epic.
As another example, Megalith~Agnus Dei takes the requiem mass Agnus Dei and turns it into a BGM considered one of the most awesome in the entire Ace Combat franchise - because of Mission 18: Megalith, where you first run a gauntlet of 30 Su-37 Terminators, and then fly into the enemy base, and then up an ICBM launch tube, all the while as the sky is raining asteroids. And it makes the words "Agnus dei, qui peceta mundis, dona eis requiem" sound badass.
Incidentally that line, translated from latin, means "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest."
On the other hand, I have to agree, Triangular is one of the worst OP I've ever heard in a long, long time. I mean, it is not bad, but it is very, very bland.
It was okay at first, but after a while I get tired of "Who are you going to kiss, me or that girl~" and substitute it for hot blooded GAR (JAM project) or the insane mad guitar skills of Dragonforce: "Through the fire and the flames we carry on!" (Through the Fire and the Flames); "For victory we ride, FURY OF THE STORM!!!" ("Fury of the Storm")
And this is coming from Yoko. How could that be! I don't believe!

I hope people reading this forum and these threads.. if you downloaded the Macross songs, OST, etc.. If you really love Macross, do the right thing by supporting the artists and order your copy of the OST.
IF you can't find it locally, CDjapan is a good place to do so.
Macross while popular, not hugely as popular as other animes like Gundam or Code Geass that gets domestic fanbase support.
I ordered my copy just like I've owned virtually all of Macross soundtracks from every series.
Ordered mine at yesasia ^^
off topic: also preordered the revoltek YF-19... the flesh is weak

I read your reviews, I respect your opinions but I don't think your ratings are consistent and fair.
From what I gather in your reviews, you liked good music arrangements but didn't like the ones that are actually much more technical for the singer to sing.
For example you gave 10/10 for Ranka's version of "What about my star" which happens to me to be the least technical song for the singer. That song is all about the arrangement rather than the singer's abilities. You can put any other angelic voice singer like Hirano Aya or even Sakamoto Maya in there and it would sound great.
From my perspective, Nakajima haven't really shined in any of the songs she sang. Her vocal range is very limiting and she relied on her innocent voice and the melody to carry her. Unlike May'n who could carry a song on her own if she was just singing Acapella.
Again, the rating on Triangular is a very biased one at best. The song sang by Sakamoto Maya is a pretty impressive one given that she has the vocals and the pitch quality to sing the song. It is a pretty unique song if you compare to her other songs. Although I'm not a huge fan of the song I think it is much more deserving than a 1.5/10 rating that you gave, obviously the sales charts disagrees with this as well.
You gave 9.5/10 to "Choujikuu Hanten Nyan-Nyan" by Ranka, where really isn't a complete song just a little melody she sings. How is this justifiable compare to a full commercial quality song like Triangular which you gave 1.5/10?
Again, I respect your personal preferences but from a scoring perspective, it is just really off..

Exactly what I thought when I heard "Big Boys" - not a nod, more like a direct rip of Pirates... I'm not particularly impressed by the BGM, it mostly just sounds like something else. I keep thinking, "Ooh, what's that remind me of?"... They work fine as BGM, but I don't think I'll be listening often as standalone tracks.
The vocal songs are great on the other hand. I like the full version of Aimo a lot (and the carrots song for some reason ^_^). And all the May'n tracks kickass.
Still waiting for Deculture version of DYRL ^_^ Possibly my favourite version of the song so far out of all the Macross singers who have covered it...!! Getting ready to be slapped silly by people who will argue otherwise... :heh:

If you translate it instead to "...grant us peace," the profundity is raised, or made more obvious IMO.

I haven't seen any official sheet music yet, but it seems Triangler starts with the chord F and thus is in the key of F, symbolic much.
Watched on their own, the songs aren't as epic.
I cannot say I share your point of view. Being a fan of classical music, and military marching music, I take the 'pieces' for what they are. None of which is accompanied by visual material. Most of the time, you just have to imagine it yourself.
And military marches in general are background music. Those 18th ~ 19th century pieces (Hohenfriedberger Marsch, The British Grenadiers to name a few), were meant to be background material. Still, nice tunes.

That's true, but peace in latin is "pacem", and requiem does tend to carry enternal rest connotations - hence why in the Catholic church, a funeral service is also called a requiem mass. *shrugs* If the line is "Grant us eternal peace," it would read "Dona eis pacem."
Uh yeah, I forgot that eis means eternal. :heh: The dangers of posting after coming home from night shift.

I'll have to take your word for it; I haven't really listened to much classical or marches; about the only march I've listened to has been Semper Fi. But then again, marches are a different kettle of fish, IMO; the purpose of a march is to get you pumped up to march long distances and not feel so tired, which is somewhat different from an anime BGM which is used in conjuction with a scene to set mood and tone.
I just friggin skip em.
I used to have Triangular in my PSP's playlist but got rid of it for the aforementioned songs.
Not sure if I should take that as a compliment or an insult :p Although I am certain you don't know me in person.
I have no idea myself if it's a compliment or an insult :p WCW's meme/catch phrase was "I don't believe!", so I was wondering if you were the same guy. The letters and stuff will only make sense to someone like USB500, who's also from Kota Kinabalu.
Aside from the very high pitch part in the chorus I really have no problems with Triangler... well apart from it not being anywhere near as good as a Kanno and Maaya track should be. I like every other proper song on the OST more than it by a lot except for Aimo. Aimo just doesn't do anything for me... but I adore the bird man version of it.... 1:42 onwards for the bir man version is... magical... classic Kanno.
Second day sales in for the Frontier OST, 9235, so 19k after 2 days, on track for 60-70k this week if the sales keep up which is amazingly good for an anime ost. Mayn's single has been rank 26 and 24 on the daily chart, slipped big as expected once the OST came out since both songs are on the OST as well.

I concur with some posters that Maaya X Kanno's work on the older titles are far much more superior with Macross.
I personally feel that her best song so far is Record of Lodoss War's OST: Kiseki No Umi with Hemisphere running second. It impacted me so greatly that I was inspired to create one of my successful characters for in Neverwinter Nights role playing server.

I gauge on personal enjoyability, but I will say I find Megumi Nakajima's singing far more enjoyable then anything I've ever heard from Aya Hirano. Angelic voiced singer is the last thing I would use to describe her style.
I find that what Nakajima lacks in experience she makes up for in heart and it really comes through compared to the more overproduced sounding May N' songs. I don't like that whiny sound in her voice at all. It's enjoyability that is key for me and I really don't care much if it's more technical or not if I don't like listening to it. Though I will even say that I find the exact opposite of what you do with Nakajima shining more through vocal talent in my eyes than May N' who's songs all seem to be carried by the background music. I mean Aimo is pretty darn A Capella if you ask me versus something like What Bout My Star (Sheryl On Stage).
Likewise I think that Maaya Sakamoto is way too pitchy in Triangler to the point where it actually hurst my ears and makes it extremely unenjoyable to listen too, hence an extremely low score to show my personal disproval. I will agree that it's a pretty unique song compared to her other ones in that her other songs I've heard are actually incredibly enjoyable and not just by comparison. Also I really don't care at all what the sales charts have to say given that the Japanese media markets are driven by name and brand power in a way that would make American's blush. The reason it sells well has little to do with the overall quality so much as it does with the names Maaya Sakamoto, Yoko Kanno and Macross being behind it. It's an absolutely meaningless statistic to me and does nothing to change the fact that I don't enjoy the song at all.
And regarding Choujikuu Hanten Nyan-Nyan, have you considered that it's simple unique charm (as far as tunes I've heard in anime go) might be more enjoyable to me then a commerically produced opening that I could arguably here anywhere in any sort of anime?
"Raging fanboys" do gauge OST on personal enjoyability too, just saying XD
Well, I guess it will be labelled as fanboyism and not an "actual review", but I praise Yoko Kanno for making me enjoy so many pop songs :heh:
My favorite ones are Diamond Crevasse, Aimo, Infinity and Welcome to my fc's night.
Only songs I dislike are "What bout my star" (both versions) and "Triangler".
BGMs are enjoyable, but nothing stellar.
I have no issues at all with May'n's tone, which seems to bother some people here, but it's a matter of taste so there's no point in debating about it.
So in my opinion, it's a great OST that perfectly fits the Macross Frontier universe (though I would still rank a lot of YK's works as superior).

The internet. Serious business. :p Especially with fanboys
Well, general thoughts:
Yoko Kanno has been rather hit and miss with me. IMO her stuff really needs to be used with the scene and doesn't quite standalone by itself. Not too keen on either versions of WHat about my Star, though May'n's version has a eurobeat-ish vibe to it. Aimo is Nakajima singing Yoko's gibberish pseudo-french mixed with some Japanese and is listenable, but it hasn't really rubbed off on me.
Then again it takes a while for me to warm up to music...
Triangular is deleted from my PSP, which should say something about how I feel about it.
On the other hand I like the SMS-themed songs: Big Boys, Private Army and SMS no Uta. THe last is always good for laughs :D And I suppose it can be argued I really like Private Army since I found myself tapping out the beat in sync with the song, on my steering wheel. Owie my red hands. :heh:
Nakajima does have heart and a voice that I could listen to over and over, that's for sure.

I think the issue raised has more to do with the distinction between music that is pleasing on a personal level and music that is strong on a technical level. When you try to compare the technique of two different vocalists, then you step across that somewhat blurry boundary between taste and aesthetics. Ideally, the two approaches should not be used interchangeably.
Aimo (which, for some reason, strikes me as oddly reminiscent of "Scarborough Fair") isn't a technically difficult song by any means. The rhythm is slow, simple and consistant, there isn't a significant variation in pitch, and the lyrics seem to be made up almost entirely of nice long vowel sounds (which is what produces that 'pure' sound to begin with). The fact that it's sung a cappella makes it even better; there's so much freedom in that to add stylistic variations to this piece, which is why the song felt underutilized. I know that the song was intentionally supposed to be simple, but as it's presented, the song wouldn't lose anything at all if the vocals were replaced by an appropriate choice of woodwind. While it is easy on the ears, it isn't really a song that showcases Nakajima's ability.
'What about my star @ Folmo' does a much better job of this, but a lot of the initial build up and energy comes from the fact the instruments are played to more of a rock feel than a pop feel. In addition, much of the vocal variation in the song arises from the interweaving of May'n and Nakajima's voices. The cut and paste version in episode five sounds much more tame, by comparison.
Overall, I don't think that there's enough material to do a comparison, yet.
That Nyan Nyan "song" is just the ten second line from episode one. It actually works better as an endlessly looping video; that way you don't have to deal with the five or so seconds of dead air at the end of the track. ;)
Aren't all openings commercially produced? Also, wasn't Nyan Nyan commercially produced as well (not to mention being a jingle for a commercial in the anime)? I know that wasn't the focus of your point, but I couldn't help but notice the subtext. :heh:

Nakajima's voice is very sweet, the innocent type. That's probably what we enjoy about listening to her singing. While May'n, we hear a powerful and sultry voice, the kind that exudes confident and experience.
I think Nakajima has sang pretty "safe" songs, if we were to go by Simon Cowell's standards. They weren't exactly songs that would blow people away.
While May'n, I can see she has far greater potential in her voice, the technicality, pitch transitions are pretty good. She and other Japanese singers all have "Engrish" problems, when they sing English words, they do appear whiney are you based the "whiny" sounds on Engrish, cause here voice is very rich, in fact the person with the "whiny" voice is Nakajima. Listen to that 10 sec song "Chou Jikuu Hanten" that is the definition of a "whiny" sounding voice. If May'n is consider whiny, we have a complete 180 in hearing.
Likewise I think that Maaya Sakamoto is way too pitchy in Triangler to the point where it actually hurst my ears and makes it extremely unenjoyable to listen too,

Maybe, it doesn't occur to you, but her pitch transitions in Triangular was done pretty "stylishly" if Nakajima would do that she would lose it. This where experience comes in, Mariah Carey does it all the time, she's the expert at pitch transitions. Probably too fast for you to hear it but Maya did a pretty good pitch transition to "sing with the melody."
Again, I think it's a matter of listening preferences but from a technical POV, Sakamoto Maya did a pretty good job at pitch control and stayed with the melody. No commercial released songs like these gets released if the producer detects pitch problems, they go through many many takes to get it perfect, so you're conclusion about pitch problem is more personal taste.
I will agree that it's a pretty unique song compared to her other ones in that her other songs I've heard are actually incredibly enjoyable and not just by comparison. Also I really don't care at all what the sales charts have to say given that the Japanese media markets are driven by name and brand power in a way that would make American's blush.
I think many people including myself gets fixated on a certain song structure, many Jpop songs are very fixed on having the same type of beat sequences, melody, and singing. This song did well for Sakamoto Maya because it was different and the Japanese listeners are starting to get tired of repetitive Jpop songs, so here we have a pretty refreshing song.
The reason it sells well has little to do with the overall quality so much as it does with the names Maaya Sakamoto, Yoko Kanno and Macross being behind it. It's an absolutely meaningless statistic to me and does nothing to change the fact that I don't enjoy the song at all.
Some truth to that, but for mainstream pop charts, there are audiences that buys music that have no clue who produces it nor which anime it's from. Even in Japan, anime music is consider geeky.
And regarding Choujikuu Hanten Nyan-Nyan, have you considered that it's simple unique charm (as far as tunes I've heard in anime go) might be more enjoyable to me then a commerically produced opening that I could arguably here anywhere in any sort of anime?
Yes, it can be a fun little song. But to put the weight of 10 secs and give it that high a mark, I struggle to believe it can out-score songs that probably took weeks or months for Yoko Kanno to produce and write, give credit where it's due.
If the song go past 10 secs, you probably would get tired of hearing the chorus over and over.
My point is, if you want visibility and people to not take your reviews with a grain of salt, then you should score and rate the songs more objectively. All of us we love/hate certain songs and singers but to gain the trust of others as a review, one must be objective weigh the song from every angle.

Sultry? I don't find May'n's voice SULTRY yet... but she does do a decent job with making it very energetic, when given the right songs (Don't Be Late, Fanclub's Night) or with the more acoustic songs when not overprocessed (Diamond Crevasse). For potential, I don't think either her or Nakajima have hit theirs... but they sound pretty good here, IMO, for the roles they're playing - pop star versus starting crooner.
Maaya Sakamoto does a fairly good job with Triangler, even if it's not everyone's cup of tea - as you pointed out, going and changing pitch is pretty difficult, and is something Mariah Carey's famed for. IIRC, Sir Andrew Lloyd-Webber loves doing this to his singers.... which is why it's damned hard to sign anything he's had a hand in. Sakamoto successfully jumped from the almost-whiny high to a lower register in the following verse.

I'll be going off the current discussion, but there was an announcement of a live concert by Nakajima Megumi and May'n at the end of episode 10. The emcees apparently are Nakamura Yuuichi(Alto) and Kamiya Hiroshi(Michael), and it will take place on 27th of July.
Looks like they're cashing in on the Macross music phenomenon pretty well, as well as this being a preview of May'n performance during Animelo '08.

Maybe 'perfect marketing sense' would do better for the logical ones out there instead of tradition. :heh:
That said, I have heard favourable reviews of May'n's live performances, and given the seemingly unadulterated nature of the Ranka tracks on the OST, I look forward to watching a DVD of the concert to see what they're truly made of.

They've done a great job in cashing in just the music: episode 10 was a great advertisement for the Macross Zero Blu-ray box that's about to be released. Even in this forum, we can see people interested in either watching Macross Zero for the first time, or giving it a rewatch.
On a similar note, episode 6's wonderful send-off also served to push the sales of the Diamond Crevasse single which was released the following day. The thing is, this advertising has been executed so well that nobody seems to mind. Sure it may be blatant commercialism, but it's darned entertaining as well.

Newtype7 (June 10th Release) So what is this about? Another single?
Also "Interstellar Flight" is another single in the series by Lanka. Something about it actually being released as a single in Japan? Megumi Nakajima is supposedly promoting it.
The Interstellar Flight single is coming out on 2008/06/25, Lion/Northern Cross cd single comes out on 2008/08/06. The next Macross episode airs on the 19th and episode 12 is than the third of July... I wonder if the cd single will get pushed back a week. Though I guess if Interstellar Flight is sung in episode 11 it's no problem...
Oh this is going to sell more than I thought, a poster on the GR blog said..
The numbers you see next to the top 3 are not actually sales numbers, but and index figure. Multiply the total by 1.75 and you get a reasonably accurate idea of how many units have sold.
So sales after 5 days are.. (taking from the Oricon 2008 thread on jpopmusic.com)
x->2->3->3->3->3 - Kanno Youko - 10,304 + 9,235 + 5,132 + 4,542 + 6,775 (X1.7)= 61,180
Obliterates her previous high in the CB Movie OST, I can definitely see at least 4 OSTS coming out now with sales like this...

Grabbed this off Nico and uploaded it up on youtube. An utterly beautiful piano rendition of Diamond Crevasse. The same guy did Triangler but IMHO it doesn't sound as great as this.
wow that is beautiful, I have never ever said anything like that in my life so I mean that music really does fit that Alto wants to fly thanks for the upload dodge, Very good song <3 Sheryl

The violin verision guy was off on some parts but it was pretty damn good 97% of the time. looks as if he broke some streams though probably what did it

I have two questions.
One: Is the song "Infinity" really by Ranka? It doesn't really sound like her to me.
Two: The song "Aimo" is REALLY pretty and addicting (full version), but...there's like words I've barely heard before. Check out the lyrics. What language are they in? Italian? Greek? Something?:heh:
yea Aimo is a pretty funky song dunno if they're made up words or not but it still sounds nice

Infinity is by Sheryl.. the only time she sang it was episode 7 when she sang along with sheryl
Think its Zentradi language

Infinity is an interesting song, I find the song a bit short because the 1st 5-8 secs of it with the climax building strong then abruptly ends without a dramatic follow through. The middle and end is a bit weak but if they remix this song, it could sound even better.
The reason Diamond Crevasse is so good because the beginning, middle, and end is very well balanced.
Most folks without a trained ear likes/dislikes a song based on 3-4 secs of the song's beginning.

Think its Zentradi language
Zentradi? What's that?
Zentradi is the language of the giant people in macross frontier you should know that if you watch the anime
AIMO is not sang in the ZENTRADI language. Its just Yoko Kanno's habit of creating coglangs and put them in her music. If you heard the real Zentradi being spoken (in DYRL), you will immediately recognize its nothing like the beginning of AIMO.
Zentradi? What's that?
. . . . .
W... ow.
The Zentradi were the original enemies of humanity since Super Dimension Fortress Macross aired in 1982. They lost the 'big one' and now co-exist with humanity (at least a portion of them). Since there are many, and I mean, MANY other not-yet pacified Zent fleets out there, it is partially the duty of colonial ships to bring 'uncultured' Zentradi as part of the UN SPACY.

That's one thing you have to give Macross - they're pretty good about pushing the product, which is probably why Macross 7 sold so well despite having such an... odd story which turns off some of the hardcore fans of previous things like Macross Plus. They're doing a very good job selling the seiyuu as well as the CD's, Blu-Ray discs, and the show itself.
Hmm im starting to think that Aimo is the song of the Vajra because she was one if not the only survivor of that vajra attack and it probably had some weird effect and fused with her. When she sang Aimo the vajra woke up and attacked the SMS and Miltiary people right and that guy who knows alot about the vajra plays Aimo on his hermonicha. Omg thats it im betting :P

How significant is Macross OST being in the top 3 of the ORICON charts?
According to this article:

the last time an anime OST was in the top 3 was 11 years ago, the End of Eva soundtrack! So it is one heck of a big deal! :)
things are sure looking good! I bet Ranka's single is gonna do great!
Yeah that's pretty big.

Dang, that's impressive. Looks like we're not the only ones who like this show :)
Here's hoping that this will lead to the creation of a Frontier movie or another Macross show that will be equally impressive in terms of creative contents.

^Before End of Eva, which anime OST did the same feat? Macross 7?
Considering Evangelion's popularity probably the Death and Rebirth OST lol... I'm think I'll sign up for jpopmusic and ask if anyone has records on just anime osts.

How'd I know you be the first person to break this news here. :D
Either way, not surprised, Yoko Kanno+Macross+Pop Music=Three in one Grand Slam of appeal to the Otaku fanbase.
It's quite ingenious.

Its like some Chinese written with Japanese grammar, a bit of English and a little Zentradi.

This OST puts the F in awesome.

Eleven years is very impressive. I get the feeling that the Macross products are selling better than the creators ever expected. Heck, Kanno Yoko has been blowing all of her previous works away in terms of sales. It really helps that the show itself has done a fantastic job in promoting the music without resorting to pandering.
On a slightly different note, I thought that most anime OST CDs would have 2-4 vocal tracks, and the rest would be BGM. In OST 1, we've got:
Triangular
Welcome To My FanClub's Night
What 'Bout My Star
What 'Bout My Star
Don't be Late
Aimo
Aimo
SMS
Ninjin Loves You, Yeah
Nyan Nyan
Infinity
Admittedly a couple are remixes and a couple are short, but that seems to be an awful lot of vocals.
I didn't know there was a Macross radio show in the official webpage starring Nakamura Yuuichi (Alto), Megumi Nakajima (Ranka), and Kamiya Hiroshi (Mikhail). Verrry interesting.
Here's the link for people who understand Japanese. ^_^
http://www.macrossf.com/radio/radio.html
The latest link has Nakamura, Megumi, and Kamiya as hosts. (Macross phase crushaa lol)
I only understood 60% of it:heh: They talk so fast I couldn't keep up.
Looks like they're promoting Megumi Nakajima's debut album. They played Nekko Nikki and afterwards, they had an in-character Alto and Mikhail conversation discussing about the Macross F livehouse. Very funny if you listen to them lol Here's how the convo went from what I understood:
***It starts out with Alto thinking about Zepputo Kyou(sp?). Mikhail enters randomly and says about it being a Nippon (japan?) something something livehouse. He concludes that Alto might actually be thinking of going. Alto denies, but then ask what's it about innocently. Mikhail then starts saying it's going to be a Macross F superlive featuring Ranka's debut. Alto thinks. Mikhail mentions the date, ticket price, plus there'll be...drinks. Alto happily yields. They talked some more. If I'm not mistaken, I think it's all about this:
a live concert by Nakajima Megumi and May'n at the end of episode 10. The emcees apparently are Nakamura Yuuichi(Alto) and Kamiya Hiroshi(Michael), and it will take place on 27th of July.
In the end, Alto dials his phone and even calls his...Mom to ask if she wants souvenirs (?) lol! He has a mom? Nakamura is hysterical:heh:
They even talked about WWE superstars like the Rock and HBK. Megumi said she loves Shawn Michaels. (Cool.) Then later on they gave her a cake for her bday. There was also a part where Megumi kept praising Nakamura for being cool and too bad they couldn't see him cross-dress (something like that) lol She made a comment on Kamiya too--"darenimo niteimai kegashimasu" (sp). There's a lot of random stuffs in it. Just check it out.;)
Then the older link features the 3 again, PLUS Aya Endo. Macross Frontoyarinikui (sp??)
They introduced Aya Endo and read her 'fanmails'. They were all fawning over her and calling her oneesama. I'm running out of time so if someone can translate the rest. It's really interesting. They played the Carrot song and another interesting Alto and Mikhail convo afterwards. This time, it's to promote the Nyan Fro OST. ^_^
Mikhail sounded like he's doing something suspicious here:heh: He states the songs that're going to be on the album. I think I understood more of the convo here word for word.
[*note: This is incomplete translation]
Mikhail: Here look, this is Alto's most awaited first OST.
Alto: That's the (date) Nyan Fro OST album...why is Mikhail? *screams* What is that?
Mikhail: What's wrong? Are you surprised?
Alto: *gibberish*
Mikhail: Calm down. This OST album contains Sheryl and Ranka's vocal albums.
Alto: *hyperventilates* Ticket, ticket! More more to the left (wtf? Poor Alto's OOC lol)
Mikhail: Left? Like this?
Alto: *happy*
Mikhail: OP/ED songs include Iteza gogo Kyuuji Don't be late Sheryl on Stage, Infinity, Nyan Nyan CM song, and Alto's beloved song Aimo (LOL!) will also be there.
Alto: *dumb laugh* Eh? Eh?
They said something more, but I couldn't understand anymore. I'm guessing it's more details about the album. ;) They also talked about episode 6 about Sheryl sending Alto off with her song Diamond Crevasse, and some more random stuffs with Megumi and Aya Endo. You can tell this is an older recording. Again, check it out. I had fun listening to the two.
At the end, they always say, see you next week. So looks like this'll be a weekly thing.
That's just AWESOME news about the OST doing so well.
Congrats to Yoko Kanno and crew for releasing an SUPERB OST.
I already have my copy purchased.
