View Full Version : Code Geass - Seiyu (Voice Actor) Appreciation & Discussion
NoSanninWa
2008-04-11, 00:33
The purpose of this thread is to discuss, critique and idolize the Voice Actor cast of Code Geass. Please remember that the discussion should center on their performances as professional voice actors and not on the show content (which can be discussed in the various Episode threads). Please remember this simple rule when critiquing a VA's performance or reading another forum member's critique:
Don't take it personally.
In other words, you’re free to disagree with another person’s opinion, but don’t flame them if they offer a well written and well thought out analysis that differs from your own opinion. Keep it civil.
Voice Actors are humans.
Yes, it’s true. They’re human. Therefore, don’t just indiscriminately rip them and their work apart as if they’re inorganic objects. You don’t have to praise them non-stop, but be thoughtful in your criticism.
This thread might duplicate some discussion in the Episode threads, but it can also serve to demystify various VA roles, disseminate VA information (VA Bios, VA photos, etc) and provide cast information of various types as well as discussion about performances.

Sakurai-san WAS famous for voicing roles in BL CDs (I said "was", because he has stated that he will not be taking on new BL roles. However, he'll still honour past roles.)

Unless you don't see Suzaku as the seme all the time. ;)
That said, I was surprised to see he also did older Loki in Matantei Loki Ragnarok. I feel like rewatching the series now, that man really has a nice voice to listen to.

He doesn't appear that often, as far as I can remember. Still, there is hardly a role of his that can be termed "fail". I think Kira in Bleach is one of those.

I so much want C.C. with Tessa's voice, in CG DVD Magazine I can't get enough of it  Hers is even cuter than Kaguya's.
Well Tessa's voice is just cuteness overload, especially in her OVA from TSR.

She is one of my favorite seiyu, her name is Ami Koshimizu, she voiced Tenma in School Rumble, Nina in Mai Otome, Anemone in Eureka Seven and my absolute favorite, Horo in Spice and Wolf:bow:. She is very polyvalent, and can do all sorts of characters, she's just awesome *_*.

She must be lowering her voice all the time to fit C.C.'s mature character, but sometimes while arguing or doing something really childish her voice could go really high (and cute ) There were a few times it happened in S1.

Hey, I asked the same thing of Jun when he started playing Lelouch. I can't recall any of his previous works before that one reaching anywhere near how well he bent his voice, he's usually a rather high and squeaky befitting a shouta :uhoh:

Ami Koshimizu is my favourite "newer" seiyuu. The first couple of times I heard her she didn't really resonate well with me since I really didn't care too much about Claes in Gunslinger Girl (I was a Triela fan), and I hated Tenma Tsukamoto from School Rumble. I thought Futakoi blew so her portrayal as one of the Ichijou twins went under my radar as well.
It wasn't until Mai-Otome that I took notice of her with her strong performance as Nina Wang. She's also got great range, from airheaded (Tenma, Sae Sakura from sola), to tsundere (Nina Wang, Kallen, Nanako from Myself ; Yourself), to drugged up enemy pilot who I guess is tsundere too (Anemone from Eureka Seven). I think her work as Horo really showed off what she could do though.
I like when she's playing a tsundere or strong-willed girl the most it seems, because she can convey a lot of emotion in her voice.
I guess I have to watch Eureka Seven now... I saw a couple of clips of her as Anemone and I'm liking what I hear. I haven't really heard Ami do the psycho-bitch yet.

My impression of him is as a "princeling". Not a full "prince" (ala Miyano Mamoru), but still pretty competent at doing suave gentlemen.

My impression of him is as a "princeling". Not a full "prince" (ala Miyano Mamoru), but still pretty competent at doing suave gentlemen.
True, but that deep and much darker aspects in his voice, that hatred and spite he carried was just something out of this world you wouldn't think he was capable of. I mean, last I recall the interviews the staff initially thought the same and had Jun pinned to play Suzaku and Takahiro Lelouch :heh:

They should have a gag segment in a future CG drama CD or DVD, where the two do exactly that. Man, I think all CG fans will go, "WTF?"
Iunno, he sounds mad ebil!princely to me as Lelouch. Nothing about Lelouch strikes me as 'princeling'ish at all. Not even when he was a kid, what with that big attitude of his and all. His more 'princeling-ish' performance would be mmmh...his character from Macross Frontier, I suppose. That one is so shouta is not even funny. His max!hentai performance (in terms of mainstream ecchi anime) would be Keita from Inukami! (in which the female character he pervs over is ironically voiced by Nunnally's seiyuu, Kaori Naduka). Haha, I like that anime. So much so that I'm hoping that there'll be more of it in the near future. Guy should do more hentaiyarou!types. He's very good at it.

I was talking about his other roles.
Nazuka Kaori is a lady to note also. Her role as Chomesuke in D.Grayman was pretty good.

Hey everyone! I found this (http://www.famitsu.com/anime/news/1215694_1558.html) today. Famitsu interviews Yukana with lots of lovely pics.

Well now my wish has came true in the weirdest way possible: C.C. with Tessa megacute voice :love::love::love::love: I feel bad for saying this and I do miss the usual C.C., but damn, vulnerable C.C. is too yummy not to enjoy in the mean time :p
I also expect old C.C. to return soon.

Wow... I think I just about passed out when I read some of the other voice actor's roles.
Shirley is the same VA as Rukia from Bleach?
Anya is the same VA as Hikari from Special A?
Nina is Natsuki from the Mai-HiMe/Otome series?
And Milly is Yuko from xxxHolic?
Talk about diversity!! Those characters are all polar opposites voice-wise!
I also find it pretty funny that the VA for Schneizel looks exactly what I would picture a Japanese Schneizel to look like. LOL

Here's a question: what do people think of Yukana's voice as Kazehana in Sekirei? It's almost like a cross between adult C.C.-voice and "child" C.C.-voice, in my opinion. (Oh, and substitute liquor for pizza. XD).
Also, I concur with previous posters...Wakamoto is AWESOME.

lol? well she's a bit on the thin side compared to the chubbyhealthy Yukana. She's also a big fan of Zero, and always teases Fukuyama Jun (Lelouch) about Kallen and Zero even tho she don't really prefer Lelouch.

You know, if Kaori Nazuka and Souchiro Hoshi were in the recording studio at the same time during episode 25 I wonder if he just started eyeballing her during Nunally's crying scene and then started grovelling at her feet saying "Teach me master, please teach me how to cry properly".

whoever is nunnally VA deserves an award.
That was one of the most realistic crying jobs i have ever heard.
I really felt her emotions.
It was amazing.

QFT. I didn't notice it the first time, but when i rewatched, wow. That was heart wrenching.
I agree! Until this episode, I was just 'meh' about Nunnally's VA. But after that crying scene....WOW. I have heard some good 'crying' in anime before, but never THAT good. It tore me apart and got me bawling.

It surprised me as well, most of the time when I hear a younger female cries it sounds really forced. This actually sounded a bit natural.
Nunnally's VA should submit this episode for consideration for best Female Supporting Character in the next Seiyuu awards. Between switching from mature!Nunnally to "Douzo, oniisama :)" and her gutwrenching crying, she has a good shot of winning. Ignore behind the scenes studio-and-sponsors politics please.

When I heard her cry... I thought my heart was getting ripped into half. I totally agree with you, it was absolutely beautiful.
I'm with all you folks, Nazuka Kaori was absolutely amazing in ep25. I wouldn't be surprised if she does win an award for it, seeing as Koshimizu Ami nabbed one for her role as Kallen in season 1.
I gotta say, the voice acting in Code Geass is absolutely top notch. I don't think there's any weak link at all, which I find incredibly rare these days.

On a separate issue, apparently in the Japanese version of Granado Espada (a Korean MMORPG), Yukana vocies the female Musketeer and Fukuyama does Rio, a bard who plays a lute.
Fukuyama-han hopped onto the blogging bandwagon recently. Apparently he only started it slightly more than a week ago, on his 30th birthday. It's kinda hard to believe that it's only been so long; he posted in a week what takes me a year to post, maybe longer. To say he's pretty into it is an understatement. He's been updating it so frequently (he updates up to a dozen times on certain days), it's bordering on obsessive. xD
Judging from his entries, one can easily tell he's the romantic and wistful sort. Sappy, if you want me to be painfully direct. Nevertheless, it's a pretty fun read so if you can read Japanese, head on over to his blog (http://ameblo.jp/junfukuyama/page-1.html#main) and give him a shout-out. He seems to appreciate that a lot.
Oh and if you sign up for an account and add him, he adds you back pretty quick. Or so I heard. I've also been told that there's also a friends-only welcome video that you've gotta friend him for (and possibly get him to friend you back) in order to watch.
Over and out.
EDIT: Apparently you need to sign up for an account first before you can comment. Please do so if you're interested. ^_^

Please tell Fukuyama-sama that I love him. I tried to leave a message. ( Converted my messed-up romaji into hiragana ) But I need to register or whatever. xDD Anyway, thanks for sharing his blog. ♥♥
...I don't have one either. xD Japanese blogs are the death of me, so other than (very) occasionally reading the blogs of others, I rarely ever go near them.
He's an...energetic fellow isn't he?
You're welcome.

Thats Norio Wakamoto, if u are wondering. I'll see if I can get one for u... Dont get ur hopes too high though.
Jun Fukuyama has one of the widest vocal range i have ever seen for a male voice actor... Compare his voice in CG to Onion Knight in Dissidia or even :D Akiba from MGS4, brilliant, really brilliant.
BTW, couldnt help but agree on this part, when a translator of the Negima! manga series commented that princess Arika should be voiced by Yukana

Wow...AWESOME!!!!
Jun Fukuyama is indeed one of the best seiyu in the business. My fave is Takehito Koyasu though.

I love Jun Fukuyama~ I swear, I watch almost all the animes that he's in. He is, in fact, the main reason why I watched Code Geass.
Not only he's a cool guy, but he really is a great seiyuu. Yes, over-the-top and being the comedic character is his main forte, but he could also pull off voicing Lelouch.
I think he suits him perfectly. :)
But, Nazuka Kaori was amazing during the Turn 25.
The last Nunnally-Lelouch scene was a total killer. I was crying my whole heart out.
The way she voiced Nunnally crying over the death of her lovely onii-sama was way beyond my expectation.
This is unfair. I would have been happy just being with you, Brother. I can't bear a future without you, Brother. I just can't.
^Those words totally broke my heart.
Nunnally crying + Crowd shouting ZERO + Continued Story playing in the background = *cries*
The Code Geass cast was all-star. And they all did well.
And I believe that's one of the reasons why this anime will remain unforgettable. :)
