I have a question for Witch Hunt:

Did you guys receive a confirmation about the correct spelling of Erika's name from 07th Expansion? I know that most people call her Erika but I saw some people use Erica instead.

Personally I'm surprised no one has tried to argue for:

Yerika or Werika, either of which would *technically* be more correct in this case as the name is 古戸 ヱリカ

Maybe because Yerika and Werika arent names, but Erika is?

I just want to ask one thing
I've just bought a new PC with Windows 7 Home Premium installed, and it's impossible to change the language so everytime I try to run the patch it says it's impossible since the locale isn't in Japanese, though it can't recognise Japanese caracters, it can't also read them in Umineko 5, it doesn't crash but I won't hear anything, is there a way to solve it?

Thanks for your help, but this time it's "unable to open archive file". D:

So, the .rar file doesn't open at all? Well, dang, maybe it got screwed up when I was uploading it. Just a sec...
[Edit] Ok, I just downloaded the file from Mediafire to make sure it was ok, and it unrared just fine with 7zip. Maybe you just need to re-download the file?

Does that include when you change the locale? I'm pretty sure you don't change the language of Windows, only it's ability to run programs that don't support Unicode. Which is under Control Panel->Clock, Language, and Region->Region and Language->Administrative->Language for non-Unicode Programs->Japanese

I think Vista has the same setup as Win7, so it should be under "C:\Users\[yourname]\AppData" and either in Roaming\Umineko or Local\Umineko, I'm not sure which.

Funny part is, that there is no Umineko folder either in Roaming, or Local. Im looking at it right now. And Im pretty sure that I can see hidden folders too...Damn, Vista cant even find gloval.sav anywhere.

Gloval.sav appears in the Umineko4 Program Files folder. Not in an AppData folder :heh:. We were both looking in the wrong place.

Nope, it un-rars perfectly fine.

But when I use the Ep4 patch, and click on the .exe file, it says "Cannot open Boxfile" while when I used the Ep5 patch, it says "Cannot open archive file". Can you try it on your to see if it works?

Nadeor
2009-12-12, 14:29
To fix the "Cannot open Boxfile", you will simply have to check your directory and your file name for any Chinese characters. If you find any, just rename them to English. Appearently that's a stupid BUG of WinXP+ users (Rename everything into English and it works...wow, what's this, racism? lol)

For EP5:
-Make sure the "Read-Only" box of your WINDOWS folder in your C:/ directory is not ticked on
-Delete every single save file, Gloval.sav, envdata, make sure there's a "Screenshot" folder in your EP5 folder, if there's not, make one yourself
-Run with Applocale (The legendary VN synchronizer)

This time, to counter an a**hole who kept leaking translated scripts, we have decided to try a whole new method on Patching and Clearing
So you might find some places that have typos and such
Wish you the best with EP5

I was having the same problem when I tried the EP5 Chinese translation until I followed this step by Nadeor above. By changing the name of the .exe from "海猫鸣泣之时散ep5汉化补丁" to just "ep5," it magically worked and patched the game, and when I started it up the language was in what I can only assume is Chinese (not Korean or Japanese at least...)

The EP4 patch... haven't tested yet.
[Edit] I can confirm that the EP4 Patch also works (unlike the other though, it's drag-n-drop). Put the two files in the Umineko4 Program Folder, changed the name of the executable to just EP5 (beforehand it gave the BOXERROR like it did to you), deleted my gloval.sav and envdata, and it started right up. I did get a crash when I unlocked EP4 (related to SE playing?), but I restarted and messed around a bit more and didn't get another crash, plus it kept EP4 unlocked even after it crashed the first time.

Both patches seem to be working, but they are still unable to play the ME's and the SE's. They always get an error whenever that happens. Can you tell me what 'tweaking' you've done to have made it possible to play it, Shinsei?

Yeah, this error? I thought I had only gotten this error once, but now that I've tried a few more things, it's popping up all the time. Even though the SE still plays, both 4 and 5 crash as soon as this pops up. :( It does this on XP (x32) and Win7 (x64) for me.

Sorry, I don't have a tweak for this. Maybe Nadeor knows something?

I'm pretty sure they already know about them, and everything..

Yeah, I noticed those too.:(

I had a few questions regarding the new stuff coming out soon (episode 6, patch of episode 5...)

Will episode 5 come out as 5+6 together? And if so, will the episode 5 patch work on the game that contains 5+6?

I also heard something about playing umineko on the ds? What's that about? It would be awesome if that was possible! Do you know more of that?

As a tradition with the When They Cry series, each newly released game will include the previous arcs of the same kind. So yes, Episode 6 will have 5 bundled with it.

As for a patch, depending how Ryukishi change the coding compared to Episode 5, the time required for a ep6 compatible version will vary. But yes, we plan to release a ep5 patch for Ep6 game.

There is a script out there that will convert a working, English-patched Umineko installation into a vnds-compatible package, but getting homebrew things (aka vnds) running on the DS is a little complicated. IIRC it involves buying some custom hardware and having an SD slot on your computer.

I haven't personally tried running anything homebrew on the DS but I've heard of the vnds project, so if you're willing to do the research on how to get it running on an actual DS here's a link: http://weeaboo.nl/projects.php?project=1

Um so, hi everyone 8D

My friend is having issues with playing Umineko. In EP2, it would crash for her right after the George/SHannon scene/clock hit nine. I solved it by changing the text speed, but for some reason she can't : x
and now for EP3, it crashes after the scene with Virgillia and Beatrice's battle, and the clock turns to 6. She tried fiddling with it to see if it was the files that was the problem, but now it says that she can't play because it's not installed properly.

Help would be very appriciated ;xx;
And if it helps, she has an XP.

Look at the error message closely and you will see that it's telling you a file cannot be found/opened
The file name was in jiberish, so something must have happened during the installation

Try:
1) Reinstalling EP4/5, and repatch'em (Judging from the error message I'd say that the EP4/5's original file was installed correctly, but just to be safe, re-install them all: IN APPLOCALE!)
2) Applocale is the best thing ever invented for VN and Galgame players, run everything Japanese related in Applocale!
3) Make sure all the BGMs and SEs have correct names, by this I meant names that are not in Jiberish. It would help if someone can post a list of all the BGMs and their file names.

Alert to VISTA users:
According to 前原k1, the head of MMR, 90% of VISTA users will have problems with EP5 patch. To fix'em, apply to the following procedure

1: Install your EP5 from your CD-ROM
2: Right click CD Drive -> Explore, go into the BGM folder inside the CD-ROM and copy the following into your BGM folder of the Already-installed EP5 in your computer:
黄金の影修正版(ラック眼力).ogg
隣死 mu.ogg
誘い.ogg3
螺旋_Choir.ogg

And if you still cannot run the game normally after applying the above procedures
Read the following. If error still pops up, PM me or reply.

1) If an error message popped up with '.wav', '.ogg' file errors in there, check your BGM and SE folder. See if any files were named by retarded jiberish. (If you are too white to tell (lolz), have an asian classmate (preferrably Japanese, Korean or Chinese, since the languages all involve Kanji) come and check it out for you. If they can't tell what the hell it's saying, then it's jiberish)

1.5) If no jiberish was found and yet, the game still cannot progress normally, copy the BGM and SE folders from your CD Drive (Apply the steps from the above quote) to your EP5 folder

2) Save files cannot be shared between the original Japanese and the patched versions. Make sure that there's a 'Screenshot' folder in your EP5 folder, AND delete "envdata", "gloval.sav", "savexxx.dat" (xxx stands for numbers)

3) Don't be stupid and patch the EP5 patch to EP3...

4) If an error occured while unzipping, refer to WinRAR's built-in tools to fix it

5) To be 100% sure that nothing goes wrong while installing the EP5 original file, DON'T Install! Have someone who you know have already successfully installed EP5 send over their file to you.

6) If you cannot execute EP5 patch/Original File, Task Manager -> Terminate "海猫鸣泣之时EP5.exe" Process (or something like that in chinese). Rename your EXE file to some English name and check if there's any character in your directory that's NOT in English to your EP5.

7) For those who have no error message popped up, simply crashes or stuck in one place: Upgrade your sound card system.

And that's all for now
If you have any chinese-patch related errors, please leave your problem in the following thread: http://bbs.acgol.cn/viewthread.php?tid=18762 (If you cannot write in Chinese, leave'em in English and adress them to "To 那迪奥尔", which is my board name so they know who to call for), since I'm not sure if the mods here would appreciate a discussion of patches from other languages

Best luck with EP5

Hello everyone. :3 I'm glad to be part of the forum and participate in the Umineko section. I really love the series ( especially Kanon X Jessica ohoho~), and i am the person that my friend mentioned regarding this post:

I fixed the problem of the reinstalling, and everything is better, except for my game freezing awhen the clock turns 6 as said in my friend's post above, as well in ep 2 after the George & Shannon scene. Can anyone please help me? What can I do to get past this? I really love playing Umineko all day and I really want to be able to play more, but until I can solve these errors I will have the worry of my game freezing whenever the time changes. Thank you in advance!

I installed windows 7 today and decided to move my umineko folder to an external hard drive.
I thought the save states where saved inside "global.sav", but when I start it, none of my save states are there.

I did install it on a different partition, so the files needed are still somewhere in my hard drive.
Can anyone help me with this? :\

While I can understand the reason why this document was created, I would like you to take down this file from Megaupload ASAP.

Although our situation isn't all legitimate (since we are on the edge of piracy here), providing such kind of document is basically the same as offering the whole decrypted script on the web. Sure, this is the demo we are talking about, but this is the open door for more of this, which is hardly what we want (Of course, we know that anyone who did a little research won't have trouble to find the tools to decrypt the scrypt themselves, but generally speaking, any extra research is a bother for most of them).

Furthermore, we did this translation for the sole purpose of providing people a translation to a SOUND NOVEL.
By this definition, we believe that having the text only is not only unpractical, but also takes down the purpose of the VN itself, as you will miss a lot of things (characters expressions etc).
Furthermore, I can't imagine the number of retcon to do if we were to edit our patch.

For all intents and purpose, we wish to have our translation used within the purpose we had set it for.

My apologies for removing the link (that isn't enough, but it is a preemptive solution, before the deletion of the said file). Although I can notice that a lot of efforts was needed to put Umineko in this format, it is really not what we wished for. Even if credits were given, I really can't expect any "good" thing in the future if this transcription becomes a trend for the whole franchise.
Thus, as owners of this translation, I believe we have the right to refuse such transcription.

Perfectly understandable, and I do not mind that you edited my post to remove the link.

I wish that the Kodansha BOX Higurashi and Umineko novelizations would get an official English release. It would mean that we would get the official novelizations made by Ryuukishi07 himself, adapted to the format properly.

Sorry, I don't have a tweak for this. Maybe Nadeor knows something?

The BGM and other associated files have to be renamed. Or at least this is the path I used using the NOAPP Traditional Chinese patch. This is because the game requires you to be in Chinese(HK) or Chinese(Taiwan) region and while in this region the game itself cannot read the Japanese filenames. (This is just like when you run with the English patch while in English region and it can't read the Japanese filenames.) Switching to Japanese for non-Unicode programs won't work either, logically speaking because then you won't see the Chinese.

So one of their solutions was to rename all the files with Japanese characters to something else while retaining the kanji. They used a program called unicodeaton_250.exe to do the renaming. I did this all in a virtual machine to keep my system from being 'polluted' just in case there were any viruses. But there didn't seem to be any...

I've uploaded the list of filenames as it appears on my system. Although I'm in Japanese region right now. This is how the filenames look in this region:
http://www.megaupload.com/?d=P8SV2753

You could switch to Japanese, rename this one file:
Umineko4\SE\落雷3.wav --> Umineko4\SE\クィケp3.wav

and then switch back to Chinese(Taiwan) and run 海貓鳴泣之時_cht_noapp .exe ...

Or rename the whole SE directory. If it gets past the point you were at then you know the renaming method works... then go and rename all the other files.

Someone should really make a .bat file for this instead of this strange Unicode-conversion program... heh. It's not like there are that many files..

Anyways, this method only works for the CHT_NOAPP patch. I'm not sure how the APP patch works... since I got this working I didn't bother looking at that one.

Just go to
Control Panel -> Regional and Language Settings
and look for the Language for non-Unicode settings.
Set it to Japanese.

It looks like this in Win XP.

Well, it's working fine here. I just needed to manually install 4 or 5 BGM files (someone showed which ones here, a few days ago). You just need to be on Japanese locale.

My rename-oggs program, though meant for use with PSP, might help with other systems. ( http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?b0mnymwzzmz )

And does anybody have any feedback on using it with the PSP?

Also, I heard there with rectangles appearing around the sprites on PSP Umineko. Could somebody try unpacking a resized .nsa file and seeing if the corresponding images look okay? If the resizer isn't written to take into account the split image / transparency info, it might produce the problems seen.

That's definitely the case with the resizer.

I did modify the onscripter resize code to account for multiple cells during game playback, but unfortunately the nsa converter has only the flat files with no info about how many cells or alpha data, and if the resulting image doesn't have a width divisible by the number of cells & alpha components, those sorts of rectangling artifacts can show up.

I've been working on a way to maybe have onscripter detect probable resized files and avoid those artifacts, but so far no dice.

How do you work the renaming oggs program?

Kirroha

I keep getting a certain error when I try to open the EP5 game in Japanese. At the very beginning, when there is a 'crash' sound, there is some weird error message popping up about ME's. And I still can't fix it.

EDIT: Ah, it's fine now. I tried re-installing with AppLocale. What a useful device.

Kirroha
2009-12-19, 04:19
... No, it still isn't working. It only seems to work at first after I installed and pressed the button to try it out, but after that it crashes again. Help?

And I'm not missing any files. The only way it won't crash is if I open it via launcher.exe on the DVD, but I can't do that all the time, and especially not after the english patch is out. I can take a screenshot of the error if anyone needs it.

Switch to Japanese mode. That pretty much solves most of the problems encountered.

Give us a screenshot of your error because it could also be a file error.

Another possible solution for the renaming .oggs problem: Instead of leaving them raw, put them into a .nsa file. That way, you bypass the operating system's naming completely.

Or distribute a special program designed to do that. If need be, it could be run with applocale, and would only need to be run once.

Yeah, same for me. No matter what I do, using Applocale, changing the regional settings, trying to find a missing file, anything, nothing works.

...

Ok, I take that back. I finally got it to work, at least in EP 5. Haven't tried 4.

1. I INSTALLED the game either in Japanese locale or in the Japanese Applocale setting. (same as always)
2. Then, I had to rename the Chinese EP 5 patch to something in all English. (same as always)
3. Next I had to run the patch in Chinese locale. I picked the first choice, I'm not sure if that's traditional or simple (assuming those were the choices), but it was the first in the list in Applocale.
4. Lastly, I ran "海猫鸣泣之时散(宋体).exe" with that same Applocale setting.

Doing these steps, I was able to get the game to get past the errors I was having at the beginning, where the glass crash happened. I "played" a little until Lambda and Battler started fighting over who was going to be the Game Master and stuff and never got a crash WHOA, loud pound noise. My speakers are up too high.
Anyway, it seems to be working. See if you can use this to get it working, Kirroha.

Oh yeah, anyone interested in a registry file that adds a right-click context selection "Locale Japanese"?

Post it. I used to have it lying around and it might be useful for some people. I, on the other hand, use this AppLocale patch (http://opcode0x90.wordpress.com/2008/01/09/patch-for-applocale/) that removes that annoying dialog box, so I don't need it.

I succeeded in running it with AppLocale, but now all the Chinese is messed up. They're chinese characters, but they make no sense. Battler's name has turned into "Battle Fast" for some reason. And everything else is too gibberish to understand. For some reason, some words seemed to have been swapped for other random words, and I can't understand a thing. Is it a problem with the patch or my computer? I still didn't change to the Chinese locale yet. The whole thing still seems like something that had just popped out of Google Translator.

Now that we have reached this part of the patch, I guess a little update might be good.

The translation is now done (chrono needs a break I think: chapter 14 took a toll on him). Please note the emphasis however, as we still have many things at hand (editing so to speak).
That being said, we believe that releasing the patch the sooner as we can was the policy we always stick with. So as many could expect, there will be no delay (so no, we aren't waiting for Episode 6).

As far as it goes, we "might" be able to pull the patch before the end of the year, but there is no ETA so to speak.
I'm just done after going through the whole game, save the tea parties for the whole day, 4AM right now... quite taxing for a rough first check (I can sense the joy for us editors, especially the bloody red :heh:)

14 is what forced me to add the ATLAS trial as a speeder-upper supplement to my dictionary-only reading method. I was DONE by then. IIRC it took me about half as long to read that chapter as it did to read the entire novel up until that point O__o.

In any case, I could imagine even a native Japanese speaker taking a while to digest all that ridiculous stuff. The information alone is hard to piece together. So way to go for translating that - do yourselves a favor and eat a few dozen cookies :).

Yup, it sounds like there are only a limited number of copies printed for pre-order or release on the release date (in Japanese stores), and according to their Twitter Himeya only got 30 of them (not surprising since they're oriented towards foreigners). Beyond that they have to wait for later shipments, and they won't be the only ones trying to get more copies by far :heh:. Hence the unfortunate delay.

However, here's the good news: There is at least one other place that ships to the US that apparently has some pre-order copies left (I've posted this before but in the spoiler-y thread so I guess it's also good to have it here): http://www.amiami.com/shop/?set=english&vgForm=ProductInfo&sku=TVG-PC-0144&template=default/product/e_display.html

I can't say anything about them other than that I've heard they're good, and I'm not entirely sure what the final shipping cost would be, but from the rough numbers they give I think the final total would be fairly close to what you'd pay at Himeya.

Possibly. Since I can't actually read Chinese (only generally recognize that it is, in fact, some form of it), I couldn't tell if it was correct or not. Either way, even garbled text is a step closer. Or, at least, it seems closer :heh:. Better than crashing?

Post it. I used to have it lying around and it might be useful for some people. I, on the other hand, use this AppLocale patch (http://opcode0x90.wordpress.com/2008/01/09/patch-for-applocale/) that removes that annoying dialog box, so I don't need it.

Here is the registry tweak (along with the installer for applocale, you never know). It works great on Win7 x64 and XP x32. It has an install AND uninstall registry file, which is doubly nice :).

Since some days I have a new computer with Windows 7 and since then I can’t use the Scripter for Umineko anymore. With my old one (windows XP) I never had any trouble with the installation or playing with the Scripter, but now I have q_q.
I changed the settings on Japanese like I did with Windows XP, but it wasn’t working on Windows 7.
I can see Japanese Writing in programs like MSN or Websites, but when I try to install Ep 5 it doesn’t show me them.

The Scripter for Umineko Ep4 says me something like there are missing files or they are unreadable.
I think it’s the same problem like the missing Japanese writing at the installation for Ep 5 but I don’t know a solution for that.

For me, I don't need a perfect patch. I just want at least 48 hours before Comiket to read a legible EP5 translation and look at Umineko stuff across the web without worrying about running into EP6 stuff.

Short such a release schedule, I wouldn't have another opportunity to do that until perhaps March.

Our motto and policy have always been to release a patch we are satisfied with, for several reasons. For one, I think it is disrespectful to just dish out a patch without polishing it to a satisfactory degree. Second, it will be a waste of time and momentum break to increase the number of patches.

...However, about the 48 hours thing...if everything goes as planned, I think you'll get your wish.

It takes time for us to give status updates.

I still don't get why it would take more than 5 minutes (if even) to update the site every week or so, honestly.

I'm still convinced you guys just like to troll with the site percentage. :eyespin:

Klashikari
2009-12-23, 19:51
To be less cryptic: like Keternal said, it takes time to actually give a proper status update.
Why is that? Remember that we don't have a single editor, but we are 7 on this task.
As you might expect, all of us are working on our own, and contribute to the "whole editing". Because of this, if we want to have a status update, that mean all of the editors must provide what they have so far, regardless if they are done or not, compare, make a script of it, and then reread AND have an estimation of what still need edition or not.

This is the main reason why we aren't so hot in giving edit update, because it really doesn't mean much, especially sometimes, the editing flow so quickly, and other times, we are stalled because Ryukishi didn't spare us :heh:

In short: we really can't update the status % that much, and instead of giving false hope, we rather update it when the information is deemed critical and certain.
Firing off a random number is really not our fancy.

I was more referring to the translation percent, actually (as editing usually goes fast for you guys, even now, when you said it'd take longer).

I liked when you guys used to say "Chapters 1-4 completed" etc.

Impossible
2009-12-23, 20:02
I think the reasons for not giving regular updates are understandable, but you could easily raise the translation to 100%, since you said that was done, and it's certainly an exact figure you don't need to think much about. Editing could just be raised to something conservative and approximate to indicate some progress has been made, even just 10-20% more. Obviously it doesn't need to be precise, just look at what happened right before Ep 4's final patch was released.

I don't need to be told that this isn't necessary and won't make the patch come out faster, but a lot of people don't read this topic and would love to know if there's any chance of getting the patch soon, or if it will be on 75% forever.

I'm not sure I understand why everyone is asking for the team to take the time to update two numbers that are at this point rather moot, when Klash has already told us when the patch would likely be finished.

Can we lay off the griefing of the people who are making it possible for us to play EP5 at all? And they're trying their tails off to make it possible before EP6 comes out. I seriously think the Witch of Miracles is at play here, and would rather not piss her off...

Oh I'm not giving them grief (or at least I wasn't trying to), just making some suggestions for the next Episode, since there IS a lot of complaining about translation percentages, especially on other forums.

EDIT: I suppose I wasn't entirely clear I wasn't talking about this Episode any more.

No, I usually add the other members' edits manually to a single script file, tweaking them a bit if they need it (though I do keep a local SVN just for backups). It means we don't need to worry about setting "standard" translations for certain terms or do a second pass to make sure different edits don't contradict each other. It sounds like more work, but it's saved us a lot of headaches we had back in the Wiki project days.

So yes, this way does make more work for me, but it makes things much more simple in the long run, which speeds up the process:heh:

Without your help I wouldn't have been able to play the VN at all. ^^;

(And the reason I wanted to Ep1-4 Chinese patch earlier wasn't because my Chinese was better than my English, but quite the contrary. I wanted some practice, since the only thing I can currently do fluently in Chinese is speaking, and not even reading. My Chinese is deteriorating so badly it's shameful to call myself China-born. )

And I'm currently shaking for some reason. I don't know whether it's because I'm excited at the patch being just days away (though I'd probably be in Malaysia with no internet connection when it's out, sadly), or because of annoyance at how less-than-acceptably the anime's last episode was conducted, or both.

Witch Hunt, you're doing very impressive work. I'm not saying it just like that, because really, it is impressive work. The amount of volume you guys have translated is probably right up there next to books the size of Eragon. Not only that, you need to make everything consistent, and since Umineko has a forbidden amount of red truth stuck in it, there isn't much leeway for ambiguity.

I honestly appreciate everything you guys have done for the translation. Here's a nice cup of Rosa's tea to thank you all. :innocent:

It's no longer listed on Himeyashop, but Ep. 6 (for $23, and includes Ep. 5) is there (albeit it's sold out) but they'll get it back in eventually. And I'm pretty sure there's some other places you can check. Amiami has an English site, I believe.

I think that adding a mute command to onscripter itself would probably be better than having the Witch Hunt do one.

Probably adding code to "bool ONScripterLabel::keyPressEvent( SDL_KeyboardEvent *event )" in "ONScripterLabel_event.cpp" that watches for "M" being pressed that sets/clears a variable, and having all code that plays sound watch that variable, would do.

I don't know what you mean by false theories.

In the opening at the end when they were in flower garden they had very sad/unsure faces on if you looked closely. And that's the mood they had when together - Beato wasn't reacting at all and Battler was very upset/frustrated about it.

This is the place to go for support and installation questions, right?

Okay, so it's Christmas, and I just got myself a much-needed new laptop. I'm a Linux user (Kubuntu, just installed 9.10 but I'm having other issues and may just go back to 9.04 if I can't fix them), and I don't really know how to install Umineko on it. I have it on my Vista desktop, and on my old laptop I installed it in VirtualBox (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virtualbox) Windows XP because I was having issues installing it in Linux and was too lazy to figure it out (especially weird since before I purchased EP4, I got the EP1 demo installed natively with little more than drag-and-drop). But booting up the 'Box whenever I wanted to check various details and whatnot (but wasn't actually playing) was annoying, so I'd like to get it installed natively on my new machine if at all possible.

Not sure if anyone here can give me any tips, but if there's anywhere to ask this is it. All the tutorials I've found in the past by googling never really turned up anything helpful. Granted I don't remember exactly what errors I got last time and I haven't attempted reinstalling it on the new machine yet, but I thought I'd ask before trying rather than trying, failing, and then having to diagnose and explain a bunch of errors because I screwed something up. Anyone have a good guide to installing in Ubuntu/Kubuntu? Feel free to PM me I'm taking up too much room in the thread, because I know the impending EP5 patch is a big topic of discussion right now. Good luck Witch-Hunt, we're all counting on you. :D

You might try just copying the directory over after installing it in VirtualBox. As far as I know, there's no problem with simply copying it over between machines, my current installation has been moved over through OS reinstallations three times, and it still works fine.

Okay, so it's Christmas, and I just got myself a much-needed new laptop....

First, make a new directory to contain all of the Umineko files (let's say, ~/umineko) and into it, copy the *contents* of the fullsrc directory from the CD (not the fullsrc directory itself). Then, copy the following directories (this time including the directory) from the CD: ME, SE, sys_se, movie, and BGM. So you should end up with:

~/umineko/arc.nsa
~/umineko/arc1.nsa
~/umineko/... a few other files from fullsrc
~/umineko/ME/...
~/umineko/SE/...
~/umineko/sys_se/...
~/umineko/movie/...
~/umineko/BGM/...

Now, download the Windows patch and extract it to a new directory in ~/umineko, say ~/umineko/patch. So you should have:

~/umineko/patch/nscript.dat
~/umineko/patch/arc.nsa
... and so on.

You can delete the .exe and .dll files from the patch directory if you want, since they won't be used on Linux.

Now, go to http://onscripter.denpa.mobi/?page_id=26 and download the ONScripter-En release for Linux that matches your Ubuntu installation (either i386 or x86_64/amd64). Extract it, and copy the onscripter-en executable to your ~/umineko/patch directory.

Now, with a terminal window, cd to ~/umineko/patch and run ./onscripter-en . Hopefully everything will work!

That worked perfectly. I never got the Linux version of Onscripter when I'd tried in the past (the methods I'd seen instructions for were almost all through WINE), so that may have been part of my issue. Thanks for the help, looking forward to replaying EP4 now that the Anime has ended.

here (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=2586399#post2586399). For all you Linux users. :) For installation, AFAIK you can just copy the whole disk contents on a local folder. Or you could run the installation program with wine and the wine japanese configuration described on the first post of that thread.

Probably a bit late, but considering the period of the year, I thought we should probably celebrate the recent festivity with Umineko, despite we can't make it in time.

Thus, let's see what Kinzo has to say about it (click on the pictures, they are gifs).

http://g.imagehost.org/t/0061/XmasKinzo1a.jpg (http://g.imagehost.org/0061/XmasKinzo1a.gif)

...Well, I guess he has another idea in mind...

That's about it people, now let's see what Sant-, err... kinz...GOLDsmith had prepared for this day.

Merry Christmas, everyone! We couldn't really make this release coincinde with Christmas. That being said, we are happy to announce that we can once again fulfill our promise.

Anyway, without much ado:

Witch Hunt is proud to announce that the new patch for Umineko no Naku Koro ni Chiru is available!

The new patch completely covers Episode 5, End of the golden witch. You can get it with the following links (mediafire, Sendspace and Rapidshare as mirror links):

[WH] Umineko Chiru 5 v1.0, 16.5MB (rar file) (http://www.mediafire.com/?jmz5m1w5wd5) | [Mirror: Sendspace] (http://www.sendspace.com/file/823m2h) | [Mirror: RS] (http://rapidshare.com/files/326612930/_WH__Umineko_Chiru_5_v1.0.rar)
[WH] Umineko Chiru 5 v1.0, 19.9MB (Mac Installer) (http://roto1.net/umineko/%5BWH%5D_Umineko_Chiru_English_v5.0.dmg)

Please be sure to check the NEW readme file as some specific points must be taken in account for the full use of the patch (some updated points for Chiru).Log of the recent changes
-Episode 5, full translation
-Mute sound feature by pressing "m" key

Note that due to circumstances that weren't under our control, we decided to postpone the grimoire document for this release. We will certainly add these for our update of Episode 5 along with a compatible version for Episode 6. Thank you for your understanding.

Vista and Windows 7 users: Please remember that the installer will fail at installing several tracks. So please manually copy the following 4 music files after installing.
黄金の影修正版(ラック眼力).ogg
 隣死 mu.ogg
 誘い.ogg
 螺旋_Choir.ogg

as usual, please always check the number of tracks and their titles compared to the ones on the disc, as there might be more missing files than these 4.

Furthermore, because we couldn't have many test with this OS, we couldn't really have a proper evaluation of the patch functionality on Windows 7. If you have any problem, please report here right away.

Please don’t hesitate to leave your feedback, comments, troubleshoots and so forth here!

First off, many thanks to our two new editors (nagare and Rias), to both Squirrel and Dormeur doing even more for the patch than they've ever done before, and of course, to Klash, who managed to edit all of this game's many pictures in just a few days before the release. There weren't many incredibly complicated ones this time, but they were far greater in number than any single EP before. Also, with crazy and ktern now focusing on QC and last minute grammar checking instead of first pass checks, we'll (hopefully) have no surprises after the release this time ^^; There are some sections which were impossible to iron out perfectly without info from EP6 and later Episodes, but they are few and far between.

Many thanks once again to all of those who made the Onscripter-en engine what it is today, and a special thanks to Uncle Mion for improving it in at least a half dozen big ways over the version we included with EP4. There is a good chance that we'll be moving to the newer ponscripter engine in an upcoming patch, and that should make for an even larger improvement.

And now for pointless stats that no one cares about, nor should they:
First off, most of this info came from the VNDB, and it was sketchily assembled whenever I had time over the last several months. So please, don't take my word for it. Measuring VN sizes is always ridiculously rough, and there's a good chance that something's terribly wrong here ^^;
Second, all of these apply only to groups like our patch: fan translations of VNs (broadly defined but no full-on RPGs) into English.

EP5 is the first time a medium or large-sized VN has ever been fully translated and patched this close to the Japanese release date. 7 VNs have been translated closer to their original releases, but the largest of these, Planetarian, is a bit more than a quarter the size of EP5 by raw text count.

If you count EP1-4 as a single game, it's the largest VN ever translated and patched except for Tsukihime and Fate Stay Night.

If you combine EP5 with EP1-4, it's quite a bit larger than Tsukihime. Unless EP6 is the shortest EP yet, EP1-6 will be larger than Fate Stay Night.

Only 5 VNs with over 5000 lines (where a line is ~9 words) have ever been fully translated and patched within 6 months of the Japanese release date. 3 of those 5 VNs were EP3 (17000 lines), EP4 (20000 lines), and EP5 (16000 lines) from Umineko.

Only 9 VNs with over 5000 lines have ever been fully translated and patched within 2 years of the Japanese release date. 5 of those 9 VNs were episodes of Umineko, with both EP1 and EP2 at around 14500 lines.

Or, if you count the Question arcs as a single game, it is the longest VN ever translated within 2 years of the Japanese release date, even if you consider the release of EP1 to be the release date for the whole thing.

And I'd like to clarify that this is because we translate recent games, not because we're the fastest group or even close. Amaterasu translations averages at almost, but not quite, twice our speed in lines per day. Still, I'm more than happy with the pace we've managed so far, and we have translated more of a single series than any group besides mirror moon.

In case you missed it, there was a problem with the installer for the original game of EP5. This only affects Vista users and possibly Windows 7 users.
As a result of this bug, 4 BGM files must be copied to the BGM folder manually after the installation of the Japanese game is complete:
黄金の影修正版(ラック眼力).ogg
隣死 mu.ogg
誘い.ogg
螺旋_Choir.ogg

If you want to be on the safe side, just copy the entire BGM folder and choose not to replace anything that's already there.

Thanks for your hard work, Witch Hunt. I truly appreciate it, and so does everyone else. Those stats chronotrig posted were interesting. Umineko was my first visual novel, but it felt the shortest. We do plan on releasing an updated version of EP1-4 soon which includes some changes we made in EP5. For example, the word "kakera" is now translated as "Fragment", something we've been considering for some time now.

In addition, as we have already said, the EP6 compatible version of the game that we plan on releasing may include further updates depending on the new information we get from EP6.

This is so awesome. :D

Of course I'm having trouble installing it, because I'm so special. D: I've obviously done it before, so I don't know what the problem is. I even reinstalled the game (I had it installed to play the anon patch and still).

- Vista
- Japanese locale
- arc.nsa is 968mb
- the patch folder is directly in the EP 5 folder
- there are 74 files in the bgm folder, and I manually copied and replaced those four files that were just mentioned.
- The Japanese version of the game works fine.

But when I start up the patched game I still keep getting that message about it not being properly installed. :/ I tried restarting my computer too, just in case.

To the Witch Hunt, I have a question:
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/8421/dlanorfinished.jpg

Why was FINISHED chosen?

デス = Death, therefore I would have gone with something like:

CheckDONE checkDONE checkDONE checkcheckcheck DEATHDEATHDEATH checkcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheckcheck DEATHDEATHDEATHDEATHDEATHDEATHDEATHDEATHDEATH
<Die The death>!
<Sentence to death>!
<Great Equalizer is The Death>!!

On a seperate note, I think the choice of using all caps for the ending of all Dlanor's sentences is an interesting choice. I think it works well. :)

Klashikari
2009-12-26, 21:41
That was something that would have been explained on the grimoire, but it couldn't be done in time.
Basically, the issue is that it is a pun, between death in katakana, but also the usual "desu".
Because Dlanor is usually ending all of her sentences with such katakana, we had to make a choice here.

Chrono might give more details about that, but the major reason is that we had to keep a certain consistent way to translate that peculiar word, even if it doesn't convey the whole thing in a specific case, such like yours.
Finally, since Dlanor's speech was sort of "mechanical", using "finished" all the time were kinda more appropriate, especially "death" was already mentioned anyway.

Ssol
2009-12-26, 21:44
I see, thank you. Well, it works either way in my opinion.

The point was she kinda went a bit insane at that part and at the part when the court was adjourned. :heh:

chronotrig
2009-12-26, 21:44
Also, it wouldn't work to say "the room has been death'ed"...

No point in translating every word literally when the joke itself doesn't translate.
I think our version qualifies as "going insane":heh:

Okay, it looks like chrono and I worked out my problem -- I was missing 翼.ogg in my BGM folder. It wasn't in my dvd's bgm folder either. Take a look to see if you have that track in yours. If you don't, copy it from your Ep 4 folder and paste it in there, and it will work.

If you do have 翼, then maybe you're missing a different track than me ...
