View Full Version : [Game] Umineko no Naku Koro ni - Translation Project
ok cheers for the awnsers, started ep4 today and wow, a new intro :P
1 last question, in wich resolution does onscripter actually runs?
i gonne get a new monitor so my handy wide to non widescreen button will not work anymore so need to find a way around it and will maybe need to resolution of the script program to make it work.
Is it Episode 2 or Episode 3 though where Beatrice actually says she is using the Knox Rules?
That would make things even stranger in that case.
She implied that she never used secret passages, but she never said that she follows the Knox Decalogue.
But really, the Knox Decalogue is just a way of keeping things fair, stating what should already be fairly obvious to Mystery readers and writers. Every single rule (chinamen excepted) is just a specific version of the more general "We cannot reason about that which we do not know."
Van Dine is similar, although it also targets Mystery cliches in addition to the obvious puzzle-breaking inconsistencies.

I assume you're wondering if onscripter will play on a monitor of a different resolution? Well my monitor is widescreen and it plays fine :D It just doesn't reach the side edges of the screen. The little bit on the side just stays black :]

Sorry to ask but there currently is no episode 7 compatible episode 6 patch?
I went ahead and got ep 7 without checking, since by looking at the past those don't seem to take long.

Yes, i want it to stay black and go non wide screen mode.
However, on my current monitor it doesnt work that way and stays widescreen stretched.
I remember there was some trick you could use with custom resolution in the nvidia panel but ofc you need to know the exact resolutions for the program to configure that.

It's apparently going to be released sometime soon. That's all we know.

I remember there was some trick you could use with custom resolution in the nvidia panel but ofc you need to know the exact resolutions for the program to configure that.Unfortunately that sounds like a resolution/monitor issue. You'll have to fiddle with your graphics controls until it stops forcing widescreen. There is an option in the NVidia panel, as you said, but I don't have one handy to check.
Alternatively, see if your monitor has adjustment settings while in fullscreen 640x480 mode. For some widescreen monitors, switching to very low resolutions not anticipated as being used cause bad configurations of the screen dimensions and don't auto-adjust properly. If the monitor menu has an "Auto Adjust" option, try that while in 640x480 and see if the screen fixes itself.

In the Nvidia panel, under the display option there should be something that deals with size and position of the desktop, there should be an option there to keep the ratio width/height for resolutions smaller than the native resolution. If you choose that it should do the trick, at least it did for me.

Quick update on patch progress. The first EP7 patch with the first 4 chapters will be finished soon, but we're a bit short on editors at the moment (people have college and stuff). One or two more people might speed things up a little for us.

Oh that's great. Too bad about the lack of editors, but it's understandable. I am swamped with college myself. Hope everything goes well for you guys.
i would gladly help, but i fear that my skills in Written Japanese are too poor.
If you can go deep in details about what tasks you need to be accomplished by an editor, i can enroll and help if i can be of any use.
I got lots of free time.
Dont wanna push or something but is there a estimated time when it will be done?
1months, 2months? i dont mind waiting but an estimated time would be nice even if its way to far :P.
I'd love to help but my plate's full with my own translation projects.
If only time could stop.

No, we have 10 editors (Squirrel and Crazy are mentioned twice and I'm part of it).
The fact we are "that many" doesn't mean only few of us are busy. It is basically a general trend (and I think we have to update the staff list as well, especially that we also list contributors that aren't working all the time with us (providing their part whenever they can so to speak).

Last time I saw someone asking a random translation group that question, they answered with "Before Duke Nukem Forever comes out."
It's hilariously fitting, all things considered.

It will take one hell of a push, but I'm hoping to get the rough translation finished by the end of this month. The editing might push the release back up to two weeks or so after that, of course. And we're not making any guarantees yet.
How much Japanese do editors need to know? It was my understanding talking to you about it once that the translators are fluent but the editors are partial-speakers to be able to compare the translation to the original, in addition to standard typographical spot-checking and coherency.

We do need some editors who would be capable of doing a full translation by themselves, but not everyone needs Japanese knowledge. However, at the moment, we could use a bit more help on the Japanese side of things than the English, so the more Japanese known the better.
Things can get bogged down with too many editors, so if someone has no Japanese knowledge at all, this probably isn't the job for them at the moment.

So if progress is going along at that rate, why is the status bar on the Witch Hunt news page still at 0% for Translation and Editing?
Did you just decide that feature was more trouble than it was worth?
Klashikari
2010-10-06, 15:51
A bit like before, we often feel like "well, we are going to have another burst, so perhaps we should wait before updating".
And doing so repeatedly just often leaves us with a stalled number (and if you add our IRL matters etc, you can say we sometimes completely forget about the status %).

I was just wondering how many chapters requiem has... Is it about the same as the last 2? And how many chapters does an Umineko novel typically contain?
The distinction is somewhat arbitrary. Some chapters are very long, some very short. Ep5 has roughly 15 chapters, a Tea Party, and a very long ???? segment. Ep4 had more, ep6 I think has more but shorter Tea Parties. Ep7 has a lot of segment breaks that I'm not sure are chapter breaks (I'd have to see the code), but could be. I would say it's a relative thing.

There are 19 chapters in EP7 and usually there are 18-20 chapters each episode.
However as Renall said the length of the chapters varies greatly, so much that a chapter can be twice the size of another.
Counting the 19 chapters alone EP7 would be one among the shortest Episodes ever made so far, however the tea parties make up about 1/4 of the whole text.

I might be mistaken but I think the tea party for EP 7 (the first one, not the ura) is probably around the same length as EP 4's tea party.
Does anyone know if there exists a French translation patch of Umineko? ><

But I COULD read it...! Everything was perfect, no problems occured. And now that I finally changed my system into japanese... NOTHING WORKS! That's weird >_<
My computer was old, no japanese installed, Umineko worked
My computer will be old forever, japanese is installed, onscripter closes itself when the first letter of the text starts. Well... I installed Umineko several times THE SAME I DID WHEN MY COMPUTER WAS STILL NOT JAPANESE !!! =(

I am wondering aswell if there is something like a music room like after the first 4episodes.

Every game has a music box after you complete everything.
When EP 8 comes out it will only have the Chiru Arcs (EP 5-8) while the EP 4 Box contains EP 1-4.

Cheers for the fast reply, is there any cofirmation that EP8 is the end or is it still in the dark?
It's going to be the end of Chiru at the very least. No real confirmation about whether or not there will be a Rei-esque sequel.
It hasn't specifically been confirmed, but from recent interviews it does appear that ep8 is the end. At the very least, it would sound very strange for the things that have been said to be true if there's more episodes on the way.
That doesn't mean there wouldn't be more stuff later, mind you, just like Higurashi.
So its either
1. watch ep5-7 now and 8 whenever it comes out and is translated
2.wait till ep8 comes out and translated and watch 5-8 in 1smooth go.
meh, doubt i can't wait till then, this is to addicting to read.

Not yet, but we're working on a compatible patch with the first 10% of EP7 translated as well. Hopefully, it won't be long before we release. We've had to change up our lineup of editors almost completely, which has set us back a bit, but we should be back on track soon.

Hello. I just wanted to say thank you for the translations. You are definitely the fastest translators of visual novels.(I've been waiting for some other VN's for well over two years). I am only in my second year of college Japanese so VN's translated into English is still a must for me. Thank you!

I even tried the old EP6 Patch where only the preview is translated... But everytime the first letter starts onscripter breaks down. =( For EP5 the Tips and the character profiles work.

Hmm... would you mind trying the latest build of ONScripter-EN?
Go to http://onscripter.unclemion.com/releases/#onscripter-current and download the Windows 32-bit with DirectSound zip package (http://onscripter.unclemion.com/pub/onscr/onscripter-en-win32_dsound-20101010.zip), then unpack that into the Umineko Witch-Hunt patch folder. Run onscripter-en.exe to play the game.
This version of onscripter-en should also give you more information when an error occurs, so please report back on what happens. Especially let me know if it crashes without showing an error message.

If it's basically showing a page of text all at once - skipping to the next-page clickwait - then it might be in "page-at-once" mode; try hitting the 'O' key and see if the text scrolls properly after that.

The Witch Hunt is pleased to announce that we have been working with representatives from Hobibox over the past few weeks, and together we've worked out a download version (http://www.witch-hunt.com/stage) of Umineko and Umineko Chiru. That's the full Japanese games, not just the patches.
The Japanese versions of both EP4 and EP6 are now available for download purchase from Hobibox's website, and are compatible with the newest English patch installers. The entire download system has been translated by Witch Hunt members, so there's no need to navigate through Japanese pages. Future episodes will be added as soon as they are translated, and since there's no import fee or shipping, you can get the games at the original Japanese prices.
If you have any problems whatsoever, please let us know as soon as possible and we'll try and fix them.
Before I go any further, one disclaimer. Hobibox has decided to start this service for American audiences only. That means non-US IPs cannot access the download page at this time. If things go smoothly for the download version of the game, Hobibox plans to include more regions in the near future.
Partly because of this, the Witch Hunt would like to open up to the other translation groups that have been working on Umineko. We haven't been in close contact with most of these groups lately, so if you are part of one of these groups or know someone who is, let us know how things are going. Of course, we'll now link to the homepages of any group that asks.
Finally, many, many thanks to Mion, Message, and Roto, all of whom put in a huge amount of work on this project, leaving the rest of the team time to focus on the EP7 translation. The shifting about of our whole editor lineup has slowed us down a bit, but I think we're on fairly solid ground going forward. Without the time spent by those three, however, the download version would not have come together the way it did.
The Witch Hunt is also acting as an affiliate for these download purchases, so you can support us by using the link at the top of this message to buy either Episode.
This is incredibly good news. It can open the path to a wide visual novel distributions through the internet. It was about time someone realized there could be a profitable market with this system (which can also make happy the overseas customers).
The bad side, is that for me, and for many other Umineko fans, it's the same as before. I hope they will open the channels to the rest of the world soon.

Well, I've already imported physical copies of the games from Paletweb. So you could already "buy Umineko off the internet" before.
But, this'll be really convenient for:
1. No worrying about that painful Dollar/Yen exchange rate. Oh wait, no, it's sold hy HobiBox so it is still in Yen ;_;
2. No waiting for long overseas shipping.
Even though I would kind of like to have a physical case and all that...

Really, nothing changed. I tried hitting these keys:
F = The fullscreen works. No problems here.
S = That works too. And when I hit it a second time, the snatchy text appears. With snatch I mean that it's showing a page of text all at once. And when I try 'O' after that onscripter crashes with the first letter of the next page.
It's useless, I guess I cannot read Umineko anymore...

Thanks for the additional information, Yuhime. We think we've seen this issue before, so here's what I'd like you to do:
1) Go to the Ep6 patch folder - where you put the onscripter-en.exe - and make a file called "ons.cfg" containing the following word:
debug
2) Run onscripter-en.exe and play the game until it crashes on the first letter, as usual.
3) Several folders should have popped up as the program started; one will be named "ONScripter-EN", another "Umineko6". Take the contents of those 2 folders and email them to UncleMion@gmail.com so that I can try replicating the issue.
Here's a possible fix for you (at least until I can make corrections to onscripter-en):
4) Rename the "Umineko6" folder that popped up to "Umineko6-old".
5) Run onscripter-en.exe again. Umineko will start up like a fresh install, with no game saves and none of the episodes unlocked.
6) Start a playthrough and see if the text displays correctly.
If it works, go ahead & remove the "ons.cfg" file, or at least change its contents to this:
#debug
Good luck,
Uncle Mion
Run onscripter-en.exe and play the game until it crashes on the first letter, as usual.
Ah, I forgot... The window doesn't crash! BGM plays, ME continues, but the right-click-menu and everything else doesn't work. I made a screen:
http://s7.directupload.net/images/101015/temp/xepbdno8.png (http://s7.directupload.net/file/d/2313/xepbdno8_png.htm)
Several folders should have popped up as the program started; one will be named "ONScripter-EN", another "Umineko6"
No folders popped up... =[

Oh, that's fantastic! I mean, I've already bought EP7, but this means EP8 won't have any shipping rate. I can also get friends to buy it more easily -- without the long wait or the extra costs, it'll entice more people.
Thanks so much Witch Hunt. :)
No folders popped up... =[
Yuhime: Are you sure you created the ons.cfg in the proper directory?
If yes, try running the umineko executable through the command prompt like this:
start / run / cmd
e:
cd "Games\Umineko\Episode 6"
cd "[WH] Umineko Chiru English"
"Umineko no Naku Koro ni EP6.exe" --debug
where e: is the drive and "Games\Umineko\Episode 6" is the directory where your EP6 is installed.
That way, the game should definitely pop up the explorer windows Mion mentioned.

Would someone explain for me please? (Like about where I can get the japanese version, then I assume that I'd use your translation patch and all...but I've never done something like this before, so can someone help me please?)

I guess maybe I misunderstood what Chronotrig meant when he said affiliate then. But I will do that next time since you asked. ;)

Out of curiosity, how quickly will Hobibox's site be updates with new episodes? Like after Episode 8 goes on sale at Comiket, how quickly will the download version for EP 8 be available? Or is that undecided for now?
Oh sweet! Downloading with no shipping costs. But uh... I live in Australia :( Hopefully the downloading opens up to Australia by the time Ep 8 is out.
You can also import a physical copy from Japan at sites like:
http://www.amiami.jp/shop/?set=english
http://www.paletweb.com/
http://www.himeyashop.com/
No region restrictions that way.

Probably won't be until the patch for EP8 comes out
Please note that, even though the most recent installment of Umineko Chiru is "Episode 7", this site only offers Episodes for which an English translation patch exists -- "Episode 6" currently.

Check out Chronotrig's post above. You can now purchase and download them online from Hobibox. Before you had to go to go an import website like Ami ami or Himeya shop to get them in the mail.
well to save time just go to this link here. It's a pretty cool deal!

I've downloading games before from legal websites, and I don't think it will. :) As for making it work...well, in the past you've had to change your locale to Japan, though I'm not sure about that here. You can download it, I know for sure, but someone who's more well-versed in it will have to help you from there.
chronotrig
2010-10-16, 13:49
The download version itself is just a simple extractor, so it's more or less impossible for it to mess up your system.
There is no need to switch to Japanese locale for any purchased Episode if you use the installers, and if you get the download version, you can even use the installer-free method without switching locales. (Though you must be in Japanese locale to play the game in Japanese)
As I said in the first post, new Episodes will be added as soon as they are translated, and new regions will be added if the download version goes smoothly.
Hobibox is doing something that is rarely if ever done. It's no surprise that they're being a bit cautious at first.
How is it possible that its still region locked?
Isnt that the whole point of having it downloadable that everyone can access it? :P
Well i will buy it from an importer if its not for europe i guess.

It isn't exactly region-locked, but NScripter, the engine that runs the original Japanese game (which is what you're buying), depends on Windows Japanese system fonts; also, it can't open files with Japanese characters in the filename unless the locale is set to Japanese. This limitation is present in all versions of the original game, DVD or download.
The English patch comes with its own font, and the program that runs it (ONScripter-EN (http://onscripter.unclemion.com)) can open Japanese filenames even without Japanese Windows locale, so you're able to play the game on Windows machines even without Japanese language support or locale ^^
Uncle Mion
Edit: Ah, I see assirra was probably referring to the fact that you can only visit the download site from US addresses... as chronotrig said earlier, new regions will be added if the download version goes smoothly, so let's try to make this experiment a success.

As I just said, they're being cautious and starting out with only one region before moving on to other regions. Given the huge amount of support for Umineko that exists in Europe, I wouldn't be at all surprised if that area gets added soon.
If there's enough demand for the download version in other regions, that can only help to make this transition faster.

I assume there is also a lot of legal crap that doesn't allow you to just make it available to all regions.
From the little I know, international law on the internet gets quite a bit messy.

Yeah... no. Even in the Internet there are things for which the Law will get you, and which you cannot do because of legal matters.
Anyway, I don't see any legal reasons why not to make this available to all regions. My guess is that they have costs to cover regarding these downloads (servers, maintenance, other crap - although I wonder if they are any relevant for this situation) and they'd rather play it safe. Now, the US is a big market, and Americans are well-known for having money and liking to spend it. If they see any success there, they'll probably make it available for Europe, Australia and maybe other regions.

Listen, when you have a new thing going, you don't want to open it up to everyone straight away. It's better to just open it to a small group of people and give it a trial. You know, to see how it runs, if there is any mistakes or errors or anything else wrong with it. After that, when you're sure everything is working great, then you release it to a bigger audience.

I have no clue why your script has such an error.
Is it an error of the patch 2.1? That's strange...
Try downloading the patch again. In the worst case you can extract the txt and correct the error manually.
There is only one "bg mhal_2co,42" in the whole script.
or maybe someone can send you a nscript.dat that doesn't have that error...

Hello, I've been reading your translations from episode1 to 4 and never had any problems, but now it seems that my safefile for EP4 is corrupted. It loads and when the moment as i see Battler it closes.
I did not read trough the 250 pages and the search failed on me too.
The crash is right after Rosa getting tortured by Maria, in the scene where Battler says ". . . .Whoa, that thunder was pretty close" or something like this
Is there any solution on this? Or maybe anyone could provide a safegame near to the said point?
Thanks in advance!

I'm so excited to see that EP 7 has started to get translated. I'm still going to be importing my copy from Japan though (well, for EP 8, already have the rest), just because I know things play nicely with wine that way, and I like having my physical copy. Can't wait to see how the story goes from the last episode. Guess I better start saving my money to preorder EP 8 now, too, huh? Unless the schedule suddenly changes, should be out around Dec. 28-30, no?
Also, any plans to translate the PS3 remake, or would it even be technically feasible to do a patch for it? If it's in the works, I need to start setting aside money for a PS3 now, too.

If Umineko gets localized to America, won't there be a CaD letter given to Witch Hunt before episode 8 gets translated?

Not if the company in question chooses to work with Witch Hunt on the translation.

I highly doubt this will happen. What Witch Hunt is translating is the original work which has nothing to do with Alchemist's game. The only reason why Alchemist would send a C&D letter to them would be if they translated the PS3 game without their permission or if they ripped the resources from the remake (sprites, backgrounds, voices, etc.) since those are copy righted by them and not Ryukishi. If they ever were to receive a C&D, it would be from 07th Expansion, and we all know it won't happen.

AuraTwilight
2010-10-21, 22:50
Of course not. What he's saying is that 07th Expansion isn't going to send a C&D unless there's an actual copyright breach, given that they've given permission for people to edit their games. However, Alchemist can still deny people that permission for their PS3 remake; it's just that 07th already gave their permission on it via implication.
Mmh... I don't know if it's an error or...

Regarding errors, I think at some places in Episode 4 (didn't notice them in earlier ones) during my re-reading I found slashes after sentences. At one point it seemed to make a somewhat awkward row change. I mean / <- that kind of marks you know. They're probably part of the script accidentally put inside the quotation marks. Just so you can pay attention to them on the next update. ;)

I installed it succesfully now but my language option keeps changing to japanese when i enter firefox or another program, strage, well, I'll deal with it somehow.
More important, I installed episode 5 which I downloaded from nyaantorrents, can I use " [WH]_Umineko_EP6_English_v2.2.exe " on this install?

Kurizu204

not sure how feesable but it would be, but it would be cool if sometime after the ps3 version is released if a phone app could be made with a correctly format script? As in a android&iphone app that you can scroll through the script formatted to match the ps3 version. i wouldn't mind even proving that i own the ps3 game for this option.

A question. I have the game (ep 4) and have read it but now I have to change computer (due to broken screen). So my question is, will the game work on Windows 7? I would hate it if it didn't because I love the games and even if my screen isn't fully broken it will destroy the experiense (like 5% is broken) and the computer is 4 years old so it isn't so worth it to repair it.

If you can't switch your computer to Japanese, you're boned. Fix that problem, first.
Is there any work around other then switching setting? I don't have the disks to install Japanese or any other setting on my computer. (because the copy of xp I have is a work copy that I got from family years ago so it's only basic stuff )
I mean for eps 5+ I can run it perfectly fine with out switching settings.

Well, the thing is switching settings is a necessity so that the Japanese characters can be rendered, which can then be translated by the English Patch.

I really don't think this needs to be said every single time people ask this sort of question. Let the question be asked if it's gonna be and Witch Hunt can decide to respond or not. We really don't need mediators for this.

Not to be taken as a guarantee or official statement or anything, but I think that's very likely, considering that Comiket is 12/29-31 and there's usually some margin of time between the final patch release and the release of the next game.

But I'm quite anxious for EP7 myself, as well as EP8, ahaha. It'll definitely be exciting. But I also really don't want it to end.

In a way, it's definitely a relief to have it done and out of the way. There's more than a bit of stress when you have to juggle so many little things and still get it out on time. But yeah, I for one will definitely miss translating Umineko.

The download version will have to wait until the complete translation, I'm afraid, but patch progress should be moving a lot faster over then next few weeks. We've just overcome a fairly tricky section, and the big 'halfway' point of the non-tea party story has nearly been reached in rough translations.

Well, the thing is switching settings is a necessity so that the Japanese characters can be rendered, which can then be translated by the English Patch.
Usually I choose not to give helpful information to blatant torrenters, but in this case I feel it's important to point out that the above statement is NOT true. The English version of Umineko installs AND runs just fine on non-Japanese locales.
And in any case, there is no such thing as a "translating patch". Witch Hunt's releases are already translated. That's what the whole "translation" part is about...

On some systems you have to switch locales, the reason for that is the music. Some of the tracks have japanese characters and if your computer can't read them there won't be any music at all. And I think that umineko can run in english locale now but before it couldnt and it was impossible to install it without switching locale. I still remember around when the EP2 patch came out and I couldn't install it. (I was such a n00b back then)

I was sure it was 10% last time :heh:.
On some systems you have to switch locales, the reason for that is the music. Some of the tracks have japanese characters and if your computer can't read them there won't be any music at all.
Even if you're in the wrong locale, and EVEN if you don't have any Japanese fonts installed, any NT operating system should still be able to access Japanese-named files without trouble. Can you show me a savegame where music should be playing but isn't?
I believe the newest version of the engine that WH uses has no problems parsing all the music file names even on a system set to a non-Japanese locale. However, I could potentially see an issue if the file names became garbled on installation to a system. I can't recall the last time I've seen that happen, but I am running Win7 and it parses Japanese characters in file names just fine even in English locale, so I can't say what it used to be like in XP.

If you use the patch installer and not the Japanese installer, you shouldn't ever need to be in Japanese locale unless you want to read the Japanese version of the game. Of course, this is assuming you have either the official download version or the DVD.

Yes, you don't need to install EP7 with the Japanese installer. The installer that comes with the partial patch will install both the Japanese game and the English game in any locale, though you need to be in Japanese locale to run the Japanese game.

Would the partial patch have the translated versions of Episode 5 and 6 with it? Or will it just be the partial Episode 7?
I'd like to point out that if you play in Mac os you can run any version of the game without locale issues as os x displays japanese by default.

Our apologies for the unexpected delays, it took us some time to fix some stuff.
As promised, we are releasing the compatibility patch for Episode 7.
Of course, it wouldn't be really special with Episode 5 and 6 alone, so we have included the prologue and the first 4 chapters of Requiem of the golden witch. This covers 16% of Episode 7.
We hope you will appreciate this little tidbit of this Fragment for the time being.

You can grab the new patch on our website. Please check this link (http://witch-hunt.com/stage8.html).
Also, our current progress on Episode 7 is like this:
-Translation: 27%
-Editing: 20%
Please note that the pace was slow due to a lot of factors, and we managed to get past the trickiest portion of the whole Episode. Although we do not have any precise ETA, we believe we still can finish it before Episode 8 release.
-However-: please remember it is just an estimation, and we cannot promise anything just yet.

Hi, Witchhunt. I would like to thank you for uploading the partial patch so quickly!
But, I am having trouble with installing EP7. I feel terrible for complaining so soon after the release.
Mainly I have two problems. The first, my computer is having trouble accepting the disk. I've never had this problem before, but right now I put the disk in and my computer whirs for a minute and then out comes the disk. Second, the patch always quits when I'm at the 'installation type' part of the installer. I'm using Mac OSX 10.4
Any help would be deeply appreciated!

I've identified an issue with the installer that affects Mac OS 10.4. An update that fixes the installer quitting should be coming soon.
The problem of the disc being ejected after you insert it means that there is either a problem with the disc or with your DVD-ROM drive. (First, you're sure you have a DVD drive, and not a CD drive, right?) I've also seen a handful of drives that will be fine with most discs, but simply won't read a few (and those discs work okay in other drives.)

That was the original plan, actually, but that'd have made for a fairly tiny first patch, and we'd already translated well past that part. Have no fear, though, since the next patch is likely to end at an even worse cliffhanger :)
I wonder which part you mean, because there's "cliffhanger," "worse cliffhanger," and "oh God it can't end at this part."

Ohara does English more epically than the overwhelming majority of native speakers of the language.
Did they actually correct any of the english used in the anime? There were quite a few that were outright stupidly-phrased, but I don't even specifically remember if they even included the engrish in the series at all.
If they did Chiru it seems like they'd have to, as there's much more english dropping going on there.

AuraTwilight
2010-11-01, 22:22
I agree. It totally ruins the believably of a lot of dialogue when you have Will sounding vaguely polite, and then have Lion go "OMG watch your mouth!" It just makes Lion seem like an ornery, uptight jackass instead of a gentle person totally overblown by a guy who speaks like he's only an iota better than some schoolyard thug.
Read through the partial yesterday. Not bad, but your Will is pretty boring. Not crass enough.
I really appreciate you guys' work on the translation, and I can't say how impressed I am you managed to keep Lion gender-neutral - but I do sort of agree with this? Will did come across differently to me from when playing the game in Japanese; it struck me immediately from the opening sequence that in translation he seemed rather tame compared to the original. His rude mannerisms/speech pattern felt like a very distinct trait, at least to my reading, so not having that does give his character something of a different flavor.

It seemed to me most of Will's haughtiness came from what he said rather than how he said it.
No idea how this was supposed to come off in the Japanese version.
chronotrig
2010-11-02, 10:10
Well, in Japanese, rudeness doesn't work the same way as in English. I'll admit that I'm not perfectly satisfied with Will as he is now, but the way Japanese can convey that rough, careless style of speech without actually diminishing his vocabulary is something that English isn't really capable of in text. Instead, that would be conveyed by spoken tone. Just having him swear more would make him sound like an idiot with a stick up his ass.
And if you check up the rest, you'll find that Lion isn't yelling at him for his overall style of speech (though Lion does seem offended by that), but because of Will's extraordinary bluntness and lack of tact (since, of course, he knows the people he's talking to are pieces, so they don't actually exist; Lion doesn't know this).
I certainly don't think he needs to swear more. But then again, I'm one of those squares who thought Battler's once-in-a-blue-moon swearing also needed to be toned down.
Honestly, I'm not seeing a problem myself. I think it just comes down to the impression you got of him from how you read it initially. But that's open to interpretation too. It's not that different from other characters with not-perfectly-transferable personality quirks, is it?

First of all: thanks WH for putting this patch up:D you got me soo excited over the weekend:D
second, i think i found a typo in chapter 3:Ushiromiya Kinzo, at the point where stuff is being explained about Beatrice and where Rosa meets Beatrice this line comes up: 'She couldn't stand the fact the she didn't understand who she was,'. isn;t the second 'the' supposed to be that? or am i thinking wrong?
and thirdly, i want to share my thoughts about this episode:), cause it feels like an Umineko episode, but on the other hand, it doesn't. Battler always seems to complete it with his wierd theories, but now we have to do it with Will. I dont mind him, Hell, at some points i think he is pretty cool, and i understand that this is propably an explaining episode to say: this is where Beatrice comes from, and what she did.

Generally speaking, I always allow people to use the translation project thread for that, since there are already way too much threads in Umineko subforum (that and creating a new thread each time is rather redundant, especially the thread serve no purpose once the ongoing Episode is fully translated).

Is episode 7 already the last one or will there be one more?
From the ending of the tea party and ??? (after quick skipping there) I guess there will be another one because the ending of the "tea party" doesn't seem to get resolved with "???"
From the pictures it seems like Bernkastel wanted to end everything "without heart or so" but Will jumped in near the end of "tea party" to prevent her from doing so which is why I said that it looks like there is going to be another one..?
But I didn't find any definitive proof on the internet, so can somebody confirm if there will be another one or not?
Well, to tell the truth there has never been any exact word on any EP until 07 announces he's selling at that season's comiket. Although I have an inkling there was an interview published somewhere that regards EP8 as coming out for sure.
