That is funnily not the case: all episode 3 posts made for the first partial patch were moved in the episode 3 thread.
Most if not all posts in the translation thread are INDEED solely related to the project itself.

this is funny indeed. This thread is already on par with ep3's and twice as big as ep4's °°;

Dang, Umi4 made it to number 4 on Himeya for the week.

And it's its 4th week there, since they got them back in stock.

Yeah, thanks to the Witch Hunt. I will probably buy Ep4 as well from there soon, as the patch is coming our ways.

Well, it's a bit late in mentioning this, but in an interview a few days ago, Ryuukishi mentioned our group's name and how he borrowed it in EP4.

Apparently, he liked it because it reminded him of the Blair Witch Project, which inspired him when writing Higurashi.

Oh, and for people still wondering what the in-game Witch Hunt is, that part of the game is covered in the first patch we'll be releasing in a little more than a week (hopefully).

Here's (http://news.dengeki.com/elem/000/000/144/144722/) the interview link, by the way.

Loving the umineko ranking on himeya, keep it up people :D

As for the interview, as far as I could tell, it didn't really say anything much about ep5 specifically (In the engrish that is google translator), though I generally tried to skim read so I didn't encounter any major spoilers for ep4 so I may have missed something, I dunno.

As for the upcoming umineko ep4 patch, looking forward to it... alot :D

I actually have to handed it to you guys that you really did get the interest of this game for the English speaking masses before the anime airs. In the words of Light Yagami, 「計画通り」www

Bravo. ( ゚Д゚ノノ"☆パチパチパチパチ

Now if AS can start compiling this and other Umineko threads into one sub-section, that'll be great. Umineko is just the start of a new wave of original-story hype/pre-anime to come. What you are seeing here is the very first instance where a doujin game is actually already popular enough over on the stateside as before the anime. This definitely wasn't the case when Higurashi first aired (was a darkhorse and no one about this except me and a few fans), and neither was it during Utawarerumono, Fate, Tsukihime, or Kiminozo (which all had their shares of "is their[sic] an English patch LOL")

i always thought it would be combined with Higurashi, but I guess that wasn't the case. I think we're going to need a sub-section as soon as the first ep airs.

I think Higurashi's success overseas, as far as the anime and game goes, definitely contributed to Umineko's success overseas before the anime airing. I'm sure a lot of people are in the same boat as me - that they discovered Umineko via Higurashi and overall praising of 07th Expansion :3

But yes - All Hail the Witch Hunt :D!~~

@D2657a,

Copying one of my old posts:

Note: The guide above is pretty much the same but this ones easier to follow (more noob friendly) imo. :D

Assuming you have windows xp, what's shown in the image under the spoiler, is how to set locale to japanese properly, which is possibly the issue:

http://i41.tinypic.com/339qeya.jpg

Assuming you have the east asian language pack installed, and follow the steps in the picture, it really should work :@

Otherwise, I can only suggest, try reinstalling >.<

Also, I'm only assuming when you say got you mean bought, as I can only say this should work for bought copies. Can't guarantee that it would work with illegal copies (nor offer help). :X

@goose_boy

Oh, and for people still wondering what the in-game Witch Hunt is, that part of the game is covered in the first patch we'll be releasing in a little more than a week (hopefully).

Notice that the post, 6 above yours, says in just over a week hopefully. Also note that the post was 5-6 days ago. Also note that there is 7 days in a week.

Sorry if that sounded rather cynical XD

@others I would agree that many people found umineko from higurashi. I am one of those people XD

@others I would agree that many people found umineko from higurashi. I am one of those people XD

That's also my case, to be honest i've only found out about Higurashi less than a month ago, and i started to watch it just because i recognized one of the character (Shion/Mion) that i had previously seen from a friend's blog and i was curious.
The anime was so inspiring that i wanted to learn more about its origin, imagine my surprise when i found out it was based on a doujin game and that it was basically conceived by a single person.
At the same time i learned about Umineko and the translation project. It actually took me a while before i finally decided to buy the game (youtube and its videos played a big role in that) but i'm glad i did. I like Umineko even more than Higurashi. Maybe it's because the visual novel format is better than the anime version, but i don't think that's only because of that. The two projects are significantly different and both are great in their own way, mine is only a personal preference on thematics.

Now it is certain that such interest in a visual novel from anime fans never happened before. This might be the start of a long series of other independent translation projects, i'm pretty interested to see how all of this will evolve.

crazysjd89
2009-03-21, 09:26
I read the visual novel for Higurashi after the first season was finished, but before the second season was announced. Higurashi was the first visual novel I read, and it's responsible for making me want to read visual novels or light novels before I watch an anime, heh.

Jan-Poo
2009-03-21, 09:46
i can't say umineko was the first...
"Divi Dead" actually was the very first visual novel for me, and it's been a long time since then i think it was 2003.
Thinking about it, that story does share some similarities with Higurashi and Umineko...

I don't understand much, but from I do get I'm pretty sure it's a technical patch that has to do with the game functioning oddly. It has nothing to do with the translation~

chronotrig
2009-03-21, 21:05
Actually, we're putting some of the changes from that official patch into ours, and also adding support for using that patch along with our patch (just so that it'll run, since that patch changes the file names for the music tracks). There were also some little fixes like adding the text 'EP3' to saves in episode 3 and preventing you from saving on the title screen (which would be bad).

And I think we can expect a release either Monday or Tuesday. There are just a couple bugs we're working out, along with some last minute edits.

Orophin

So wait, do we have to download both patches in order to have the fixes and the translation or will your patch do both while supporting the official patch for those who have it installed?

chronotrig
2009-03-21, 22:01
The latter. As far as people using our patch are concerned, the official patch does nothing. All of the fixes we added will work whether you have to official patch or not (there are some details in the official patch that we are not implementing).

However, if you do install the official patch, or if 07th-expansion decides to include it in later versions of Umineko, our patch should still work fine on top of it.

So 40% of this episode is just slightly less than episode 1? That's pretty insane amount of text.

I remember taking way more time to read episode 1 myself. But then again I actually spread my reading out, so I tend to go at a slower pace.

That's a shame that we couldn't release the patch sunday considering that almost everything was done, but once again, my shitty schedule wasn't exactly helping...
Well, at least it was within our expected deadline so...

Well then, shall we start?

Witch Hunt is proud to announce that the new patch for Umineko no Naku Koro ni is available!

http://g.imagehost.org/t/0891/grimoire1.jpg (http://g.imagehost.org/view/0891/grimoire1) http://g.imagehost.org/t/0942/umi4preview1.jpg (http://g.imagehost.org/view/0942/umi4preview1) http://g.imagehost.org/t/0347/umi4preview2.jpg (http://g.imagehost.org/view/0347/umi4preview2) http://g.imagehost.org/t/0243/umi4preview3.jpg (http://g.imagehost.org/view/0243/umi4preview3)

The new patch covers the first 9 chapters of Episode 4, Alliance of the Golden Witch. You can get it with the following links (mediafire, Rapidshare as a mirror linkŕ:

[WH] Umineko 4 v4.0, 41.51MB (rar file) (http://www.mediafire.com/?jemtjmvzzg5) | [Mirror: RS] (http://rapidshare.com/files/213010268/_WH__Umineko_4_v4.0.rar)

As usual, please do not overwrite the old patch if you were using it. Rather, please delete it and then install the v4.0. Worry not, the save states are not in the patch folder.

Note: Because of the new feature, it is very likely that any old save state (regardless of the episode) will act up very weirdly most of the time. We suggest you all to make new save state starting from this patch release even for the previous episodes.
Our apologies for this inconvenience.

Please be sure to check the NEW readme file as some specific points must be taken in account for the full use of the patch (a lot of content has been changed, and the format is itself, easier to read).Log of the recent changes
-Chapters 0-9 of Episode 4
-Sound glitch fix working for vista (repeated sound SFX)
-Buttons everlasting "red effect" bug fixed
-Quake freeze bug fixed
-A new feature has been added! Check out the start of any Episode!

Please don’t hesitate to leave your feedbacks, comments, troubleshoots and so forth here!

How many chapters are in total for Episode 4 though?

chronotrig
2009-03-23, 03:04
There are 19 chapters total, but their size differs by a huge amount
For example, chapter 16 alone is longer than half of the patch we just released.

The third patch will be only slightly shorter than this first one in length, but will have only 3 chapters and the tea parties.

Well, I think the point was that the patch could end on a climatic note without being on a cliffhanger.
Trust me, that point was not exactly easy to choose as it would be either a silly mood breaker, or a ugly cliffhanger.

That was the least harmful scene to select. That or forced to split the game either in 2 or 4, which is not exactly the best conditions for Chrono.

Matrim
2009-03-23, 10:44
Is there a way to play the game even if the music tracks are not played properly? I installed the game under Vista because I have Japanese regional and language settings there but I would rather play it under XP, even iwth some of the music missing. I can play episode 3 under Windows XP even though I instaleld it under Vista too, but episode 4 gives me an error while Vista allows me to play. I mean apart from installing Japanese regional/language settings for XP which I am reluctant to do just for the music.

Hey, what's wrong with cliffhangers? Other than having people at your throat demanding the next patch release date they are good for building anticipation. :p

Otherwise, kudos on your latest release. But you just had to go and release it during the morning while I'm still at work. You did it on purpose, right? :( Excuses blaming it on the time zone difference aren't valid

We put that check in because it seems a lot of people are playing through the game without those songs and don't know it. And if you see that error, you're definitely missing way too many songs to fully enjoy the game.

If you absolutely have to play it without changing your regional settings, copy any ogg file from the BGM folder and rename it '80.ogg'.
We strongly suggest that you only try this if you're already played the game with all the music.

Ah thanks. My friend had a lot of trouble with Japanese fonts on his computer (he couldn't get them working at all), so I adjusted the song names in the gamescript and the soundfiles with Japanese text in them, so that the game could still play those songs for him.
Guess I'll need this trick to get the patch working for him.

Also: THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TRANSLATING THIS AMAZING SOUND NOVEL!

Edit:
Just saw the grimoire part. Awesome add to the game.
I was already wondering if you would add the grimoire in the game, since Mion already used a similar hack in her Higurashi patch.

I just tried it here
The sound is kinda strange... and choppy... not very continuous

Any TIP?

Are you using the version of onscripter-en that came in the new patch (along with the SDL.dll file)?
If you're using an older one, you might be getting the Vista sound bug.

We've had several people check and the sound is working fine on Vista with the new patch.

Well
I just downloaded the patch and unpacked it
There's a SDL.dll file in the middle of the files, and I'm using the onscripter that was with the patch

I'm using windows XP

The other patch was working fine

[WH] Umineko 4 v4.0, 41.51MB (rar file) (http://www.mediafire.com/?jzxwny2ughr) | [Mirror: RS] (http://rapidshare.com/files/212623184/_WH__Umineko_4_v4.0.rar)
[WH] Umineko 4 v4.0 for MAC, 41.86MB (rar file) (http://www.mediafire.com/?4enzj2rjcmz) | [Mirror: RS] (http://rapidshare.com/files/212611642/_WH__Umineko_4_v4.0_for_Mac.rar.html)

I checked the readme and notices something weird it says:
absolutely no content of ep4 have been translated did you include the wrong readme or something??

That was a line I forgot to edit. Of course, the line should read as "It is only covering the first 3 episodes completely, but only the first 9 chapters of Episode 4 have been translated so far."

I've got a bit of a problem.

I downloaded the new patch, but I uninstalled the old ones first and there's no new folder, apparently. I only got the WINRAR file. I'm not sure if there's something wrong with the computer or if I'm doing something wrong. Can you tell me how to replace the deleted one?

I also have a problem...

I installed the patch, and it keeps telling me that I have to set the regional language to Japanese or to install the music files, but I have everything and executed the program on AppLocale too. I also reinstalled it again, getting the same files, and the patch is telling me that.

Any suggestions?

Yup, the new patch actually uses DirectSound like it should (that's the "audio fix"), so you need to be sure your settings are right ;)

Alright, let's try and fix this now.

There are a few problems when using Applocale with our patch, so if you're getting the 'regional language settings' error screen, this is how you can fix it:

Find the Umineko game disk, right-click it, and select open.
Find the 3 folders called BGM, sys_se, and SE.
Copy those folders into your game folder (Program Files\07th_Expansion\Umineko4), and tell it to overwrite all files.

Also remember to run the game with Applocale every time if you haven't set your regional settings to Japanese.

Reporting that the game is working under Linux, with onscripter svn version 20090110. The only bug I can report is that it sometimes switches between fullscreen and windowed mode on its own, but it's kind of sporadic and I haven't been able to find a pattern, other than it happening when a paragraph ends up sowing (and you get that page like icon at the end of the line, instead of the arrow).

AppLocale is a Windows Application that allows you to run a program in a certain "locale" without changing your whole Windows setting to it.

I prefer changing the Windows settings, though.

Also, out of curiousity, if you didn't know how to extract a RAR file, how did you extract the Umineko opening movies?

Ok, I don't want answers from those who already know but..
We have 2 message bottles. Which are both different in content, and indicate that everyone from the Ushiromiya family died.

This way, I'm looking now at Umineko at this angle

1. Episodes 1 and 2 are the what if's of the Rokkenjima incident, the stories inside those 2 message bottles. They are shown to us as it is.

2. Episode 3 is what happened, or rather as Ange put it, where the plans of the culprit didn't go according to plan. This is the world that results to Ushiromiya Ange's unhappiness.

Well, I'll need to distract myself again with other things or else I'm going to die of waiting.

Yup, I'm also looking at it that way.. but, the repetitions exist. I don't think they're simple stories in a bottle.

Yet, why have they become written stories in a bottle? Is it because 'the person in the center of the repetition'/'Beatrice'/'the culprit'? failed in this game and gives out the notes to enforce it's existence or something?

How should one really look at this overall?

I'm so confused.. @_@

We announced that the last minute required for the patch were the edits and bugs, and we maintain this claim (which is rather a fact).
The omakes you saw so far were always done right after the first translation draft was made, which was absolutely not affecting by any means the releasing date.
That is because we always go through translation first, and then afterwards, the editing and the qualitycheck/testing. Ergo, absolutely nothing related to the delay.
And honestly, I don't see any of us having fun into belating a patch for the hell of it.

I would like you to stop doing such assumption. Feel free however to report us critics of the actual content, especially the typo and the grammer issues.

Just finished this and the both option will forever haunt me.
Also since you asked for some corrections I had read this on an image board about a day ago:
"Witch Hunt doesn't know the difference between "who" and "whom" and it's really bothering me."
I'm not really too sure on the locations as I didn't notice though, but i thought you would want to know.

k//eternal
2009-03-26, 00:44
The only people that should "really bother" are hardcore grammar nazis... however, I suppose I can take another look at it.

If you'd be so kind, can you ask this person to point out locations? The options are either that I sift the script for every instance of these two words which will probably make me cry, or get help from someone who's already seen the issue... particularly if the issue is that "who" was used where "whom" should have been, since the latter is less common.

The only instance of "whom" in EP4 seems to be "When you become a full witch, you may not only be a match for me, but might instead grow into a Great Witch whom I must acknowledge as superior."

This is correct usage ("I must acknowledge *"), so I'm assuming it's the opposite problem.

EDIT: Just checked every "whom" in the entire script. (Luckily there aren't terribly many.) They're correct. I don't have time to check each "who" right now, though.

Is it "an honor" said by Ronove on episode4? The rules about the "n" in front of words starting with "h" is kinda confusing. In this case it's correct.

I had a similar problem such as you are having. Note: I'm not sure if this will work if you use Vista, but if you have XP like I do then it should be fine:

1. Go to My Computer. Make sure the Umineko 4 disc is in your disk drive obviously. When My Computer opens right click the umineko icon under Devices with Removeable Storage (the icon should be part of Battler's face).

2. Click 'Explore' option when you right click. A new window should open up, and should look like this:

http://i44.tinypic.com/fblzyo.jpg

Now 'X' out of this window for a moment. Go into 'My Documents' and make a new folder. Call it 'Umineko 4' or whatever. I suggest you take that folder and put it on your desktop for the time being to make things easier.

3. Now go back to the window in Step 2, while keeping your 'Umineko 4' folder opened (you can do this by reopening My Computer on a different window). Now simply transfer everything from the D drive Explorer window into your Umineko 4 folder - EXCEPT FOR THE FULLSCR DATA.

4. After doing that, open the Fullscr data folder from the D drive window and copy all the files inside of there into the 'Umineko 4' folder, but create no sub folder for it okay!

5. Almost done. Download the patch and put that [WH] folder into the Umineko 4 folder. Open it up, load up the onscriptor and you should be able to play!

Actually, no. Sorry, but save files from earlier versions are not compatible with the new patch.
However, you can unlock the chapter select function by unlocking EP4, which should lower the amount of text you have to skip.

Fortunately, this should be the last time save files get crushed in our patches, at least for the question arcs (the original game had similar problems).

I had a bit of an issue with the Mac version of the new EP 4 patch. I assume that, once I put the [WH] Umineko English folder in the RAR file into the Umineko4 folder, that I only had to double-click on Onscripter to run the game, right? When I tried to do that, Onscripter would try to open (I'd see it briefly appear in the dock), but then it'd immediately disappear and wouldn't open the game. On a hunch, I downloaded the Onscripter in chronotrig's post a while back (quoted below), and copied the Onscripter-En into the folder; the game worked when I opened it with this Onscripter.

There is a Mac version for onscripter, which you can get from here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/8pvwno).
This actually fixes a sound bug that is in the Windows version and has all of the game effects added, so it's just about the best build out there.

Was I just doing something wrong, or has this happened for all the Mac users?

@shadow miko

Assuming you mean "can I change the locale in vista", yes you can in ultimate edition but I'm not certain of the other, more commonly used versions. Following from one of my old posts, this guide is for xp, but the process in vista is similar (Unfortunately I cannot show a vista guide as I reverted my only vista computer to xp)

Assuming you have windows xp, what's shown in the image under the spoiler, is how to set locale to japanese properly:

http://i41.tinypic.com/339qeya.jpg

Assuming you have the east asian language pack installed, and follow the steps in the picture, it really should work :@

I'm not sure what the language capabilities of vista are (for versions other than ultimate) so hopefully you can do something similar.

In vista, you dont have the whole uh... bunch of buttons in step 3, but yeah, hopefully you can figure it out as the first 2 and last 2 steps are similar.

When the settings are in place, assuming you can do it with vista, you should be able to install the game, and hopefully run it correctly as intended. :S

...

Also after all that ramble (hopefully it made sense), if you meant something else, I'm sorry, but I couldn't interpret what you said differently.

First of all, good work with hunt! i really enjoyed this patch!

But there's one thing i think you must add in the grimoire for non-english readers:

What's a kakera? by context i sorted out they were like "fragments" or something like that.

I tried searching the word on the internet but that confused me even more.

The kakera is explained both in the in-game notes of episode 1, and in the grimoire document for episode 1.

Sorry to trouble you guys. I think you folks deserve a huge Thank You for the all the great accomplishment up till now, and in my opinion you guys did a great job so far (I've only played a few hours with Umineko). However something started to bug me while I was playing, and I didnt found any solution whatsoever on that.
I'm not sure if someone else already asked that (I've started to read through all 73 pages, but eventually gave up), but is there any way to turn down or mute the music in the game?

The thing is Violin is really not my type and while I understand it is really effective in creeping me out in the scary scenes, I cannot bear it really during the peaceful dialogs etc. The other thing is that my interest used to fluctuate whatever I play/watch whereas I used to leave the game for a while and browse something else in the meantime, however Umineko's loud Violin music just keeps blaring out from my speakers, and I kinda want to turn it down during these times. (It's a bit troublesome to save/exit/start program/load all the time).
I'm not saying the music is bad (it is actually quite good, makes excellent atmosphere), it's just I'd like to turn it down sometimes, but I haven't found any options to do so.
Thanks in advance, keep up the good work (hats off to you guys)

Random question.

When words are typed like thi~s or thi-s (can't think of an example off the top of my head, but I think Beato uses it a lot), how should we read them? Are they slurred, or emphasized, or something? Also, how d'you pronounce Lambdadelta and Krauss?

Proto
2009-03-29, 15:44
In the case of Lambda-Delta, it's the same as in the greek letters (in case you have never encountered them which would surprise me given that they are used since junior high level physics and maths, Delta would be pronounced the same as in 'Delta airlines', the company. Lambda, the first part could be pronounced as in lamb, the da could be pronounced as the da in dandy.

As for Krauss, the Kra could be pronounced as in Kraft, the food company. Hmm... I can't think of a simil for a simil for the uss part.

as for the thi~s thingy, yeah, they are intended to be slurred.

Well, considering its called a Sound Novel, and it focuses on the music to set the mood, why would they want to put something to turn off music? :P

2009-03-29, 18:23
I agree that during episode 1, the music for the rather long introduction of the characters started to piss me off a bit too, though it definitely improved so much later on that I wouldn't consider trying to play without it^^ Anyway, if you find it frustrating I recommend turning off your speakers (or headset or whatever) or adjusting the speakers to be quiter for the duration of the (rather long) scene, or until you feel like listening to it again^^

If you can't adjust the sound externally, then, try alt+tab (minimise hotkeys), adjust the sound, then maximise again :S

As anyone said you just need to turn off the speakers or the windows volume control. Unless you want to listen to your own mp3 while playing... as a drastic system you could create a void .ogg file with no sound and then replace all of the existing .ogg with it (changing name files accordingly), but do you hate umineko's music to that extent?

I've thought of changing the name of the BGM folder, but decided against it, as I don't really want to mess with it that much, and maybe even risk a reinstall, replay.

Well no as I said, I don't hate it (actually I rather like it, it is completely needed to feel the creepy atmosphere), but whenever I'm alt tabbing or whatever I'm surfing on the internet in the meantime (it's usually rare when I'm entirely immersely focused on VNs, therefore I keep alttabing like every hour for a bit depends on my focus), however I'm a bit lazy to save quit, relaunch and reload 5 minutes later, just because I wanted to do something else which needs sound. That's why I was hoping if there might be somesort of hidden inbuilt volume setting implemented. It's not a big deal though, especially if the music really improves at the later parts so much that it keeps me entirely immersed.

Just a few things I have noticed:
Is anyone else experienced serious lagging during the scenes where the rain is shown onscreen? Even though my computer is beyond the recommended requirements, whenever it's raining in the game (the screen only, it's fine with the sound of rain), everything starts lagging, the text appears in slowmotion, and even the blinking text ikon/arrow laggs.

The only bearable solution I invented against that, is that I'm playing by advancing the story with CTRL (skip) key, as it makes it faster a bit, and unlike other Novels it's not that ultrafast.

Of course I pretty much started using CTRL throughout the normal scenes too, but that causes the game to freeze down like every hour or so (it froze down four times and only during times when I'm playing with CTRL advancing method, once in the rain, thrice in indoor normal scenes).
Am I the only one with these issues or is there anyone who experienced these so far?

Edit: Bah last save 3 hours ago...

Sounds to me like you're using an old patch. I know the control freeze bug was fixed in the Ep4 one, and I haven't been getting lag in the rain scenes in 4 either so I'm assuming that was too.

You just need to upgrade to fix it.

What happened to the music box in Ep. 1?

If you mean that you're using the episode 1 demo game, with the episode 1 patch, then it is because the demo does not include the music box.

Whether it is included in the official game (of episode 1) or not I could not confirm, but I assume so :S

Klashikari
2009-04-01, 04:28
That is correct: the music box only appears in the retail version of episode 1, and was needed to unlock the ura tea party.
Since Ryukishi removed the Music Box for the demo, we considered that as a feature that he didn't wish to let it public for the demo, hence we didn't change anything about that.

Just want to say, for those that didn't have all music transfer over when they installed the game, some Sound Effects might not have installed as well. You may want to check out if that happened, because I was missing a lot of sound effects. Compare the SE, sys_se, and ME folders with the original disk.

IIRC, the secret tea party os only secret if you only have the first game, if you are playing it on a latter game disk, you odn't need to unhide it. you should be getting it right after reading the first tea party.

Hm, question about something that... not really bugs me but I was just curious about.

How come when someone uses red, the punctuation is sometimes red and sometimes white? Sometimes I'll see a whole page in red including exclamation marks and periods and then next I'll see a whole page in red but the exclamation marks and periods are white.

Klashikari
2009-04-03, 17:51
That is because it is in the original script, and we don't know whichever is the correct layout: that the punctuation is included or not (rias actually brought this up in episode4 thread as well).

Since we can't exactly call head or tails, we decided to stick with the script until Ryukishi makes another patch that fix that... or not.

Also, since we don't want to let you guys in the dark, we have to announce sort of "bad news".
Considering the current period of the year, chrono (our main and only translator, as you probably know) will have to take a break in order to invest himself fully for his studies (last quarter). Therefore, we probably won't have any progression for the next 2 months.

Of course, we will work on episode 4 as soon as we got more free time, but at least, you now know why there will be a lack of updates for some time.

Guys, stop sending me PMs about typos and such from anything older than EP3. (I asked about EP4 specifically for a reason, although I will take anything from EP3 because I already edited that and there shouldn't be terribly much left.) EP1 in particular has a massive number of errors and it's much more efficient to just go through the whole game and redo stuff than to sift through my PM box.

Has anyone had problems with the 4.0 OS X patch? The executable won't run at all for me (on OS X Leopard). I tried replacing it with the demo onscripter, but then saving won't work. I just crashes back to the desktop whenever I try to save. Curiously enough, if I try running Onscripter on the original game, the save files do register, but only while the game is running. After restarting, they all disappear. Any ideas for this?

Edit: I think it might partially due to a permissions thing, as when copying from the DVD everything is read only. I changed a couple of folders/files to be read-write, and then tried renaming and moving the patch into the main folder, which managed to work with correct saving (sometimes - it still sporadically flushes the saves apparently). Still can't get to having the patch in the folder. Where are the save files for the OS X version stored? I've read in this thread that it's stored in the registry files for the Windows version, but is there something like that on Mac?

Reporting that the game is working under Linux, with onscripter svn version 20090110. The only bug I can report is that it sometimes switches between fullscreen and windowed mode on its own, but it's kind of sporadic and I haven't been able to find a pattern, other than it happening when a paragraph ends up sowing (and you get that page like icon at the end of the line, instead of the arrow).

I have a question about the first sentence of the witch's epitaph

According to what i got the original is shown as follow:

懐かしき、故郷を貫く鮎の川。

Which should be transliterated into:

Natsukashiki, kokyou o tsuranuku ayu no kawa. <- I hope I didn't mess up.

What bothers me is that comma. I have limited knowledge about japanese so i'm guessing that "natsukashiki" is the same as "natsukashii". So uhm... is it normal in japanese to separate adjectives and nouns with commas? °°;
Does that "natsukashiki" (beloved, nostalgic) really refer to kokyou "homeland"?

theacefrehley
2009-04-21, 10:58
懐かしき is an old form of 懐かしい.
It's become what it is now just by dropping the k-sound... (and before き-endings, there were し-endings, from what I read )

Well, as a self-student, I'm not that knowledgeable (ignorant) but, I guess there's also this possibility:

For the sake of organization, as there are two 'adjectives' to river of the sweetfishes:

1st adjective = 懐かしき
2nd 'adjective' (a relative clause) = 故郷を貫く ;

The coma could be indicating that 懐かしき links to 鮎の川

Without the coma, 懐かしき故郷, it'd be clear that 懐かしき links to 故郷.

Yeah it certainly would make sense to think it is referred to hometown, but the comma itself does make sense?
I know as usual this might just be an overly analysis of minor facts, but still why this comma here?

I've made i few researches on google and i found this:

http://209.85.129.132/search?q=cache:q6UOHYh5A28J:haikuguy.com/issa/search.php%3Fkeywords%3D%26romaji%3Dsora%26comment %3D%26year%3D+natsukashiki+old&cd=5&hl=en&ct=clnk

here "natsukashiki" is standing alone and is it translated as "like old times". Is it possible that in the epitaph "natsukashiki" doesn't refer to anything in particular but it just serves the purpose of recalling the past?

theacefrehley
2009-04-21, 11:18
Beware dude

Poetry is usually translated very loosely, to try to preserve the original 'magic', mood, feel, whatever... (:heh:)
Otherwise, a literal translation would make it very 'cold' and not-poetic

And it can perfectly mean 'nostalgic', missing, dear, something you miss, you wanted close, but is not
It is an adjective

Jan-Poo
2009-04-21, 13:53
Yeah i know, but japanese is a language that often omits words.

I learned the meaning of "natsukashii" by frequently hearing it in various fansubs. Of course when a word is pronounced alone chances that i learn what does it mean are very high. Natsukashii happens to be be a word that is frequently pronounced alone without adding anything after that, and in that case 90% of fansubbers translate it as: "how nostalgic".

Now this case is a little problematic to me. "natsukashiki" is not exactly alone here, and i can't really imagine what should be implied if it was, this would lead me to think that therefore it is tied on what is shown next. But if that's the case why putting the comma there? As far as i known punctuation is something that has been borrowed by western languages and definitely you should not place a comma between an adjective and the related noun. In a few words: there was no real reason for Kinzo to use that comma there, unless he wanted to clarify that nastukashiki and kokyou are two separated things. Chigaimasuka?

It may have been asked elsewhere, sorry if I've missed it, but the post was made within the last 24 hours as far as I can tell. On the umineko animes homepage HERE (http://umineko.tv/web/main/index.html) is it suggesting that the anime is going to start airing in July 2009?

I can't read much of it, but what I do pick up is

TV ANIME
2009 July ...?
Television ....?

The majority of the kanji are beyond my very low level of japanese

Anyway, anyone wanna confirm for me? :D :D :D

I have a little idea. I dont know if something like this wasnt mentioned before in this thread (I dont want to read through all 78 pages).
My main locale is Czech and I have a lot of programs that require Czech locale so playing Umineko with background music requires changing locale and restarting PC (I hate Vista). The main reason why BGM cant be played when using non JP locale is the usage of japanese symbols in names of the files. Would it be possible to make alternative translation patch that will load different files as a music - the ones that arent using japanese symbols? Than simple batch file that renames .ogg files in music directory will enable music even when playing with different locale.
I tried to hack into game code and do it myself, but all utilities to extract content of .nsa files dont work for me. Not to mention that I dont know anything about ONScripter code syntax (I want to learn it but there are almost none english guides).

Jan-Poo
2009-04-24, 08:39
I dunno if this is feasible but the main problem is that you'll have to manually rename the ogg files since witch-hunt will not include those files in the patch.

maximilianjenus
2009-04-24, 09:15
Yes, he already said he will simply use a batch file to do the renaming.

chronotrig
2009-04-24, 12:17
Actually, there is a simpler solution.

Try applying this (http://07th-expansion.net/umi/Support/Patch/umiEP4patch.zip) patch from the official website to your original game.

To use this patch, just move all individual files in it into your Umineko4 folder, then run umi4patch.bat.

Doing this will not only change the BGM files to non-Japanese names that our patch is also compatible with, but will also update the script for the original game so you can run that too without missing tracks.

A warning though: there are several sound and music effects with Japanese characters which are not effected by this.

Nice, thank you. Does the patch for episode 3 work the same way? I dont have ep 4 yet.

Maybe adding that info to the readme could be really useful for your readers btw.

chronotrig
2009-04-24, 23:21
We haven't been pushing it too much since it doesn't handle all the sound effects.
When the next patch comes out, maybe we'll add in a batch that does everything. We would need to update the script file as well, which complicates things a bit.

i have two silly questions:

1) Is there a way to select a chapter to start from? Can i jump to a certain point or is that impossible except for saved games?

2) Where the saved games info are stored? There's a "gloval.sav" file on main directory but it looks like saved games created from the onscripter only works there and not on the original game.

Since everyone seems to be starting to use Enjye for Ange's name since the Motion Graphic spelled it that way, are you going to adopt that spelling too, or keep Ange?

I don't really like the look of the name Enjye, myself, but... thought I'd ask.

Lol, people are actually using that? God knows why, it looks awful, and even if you're one of the rigid followers of 'official names are always right' the motion graphics... aren't official. Anyway, they've used it Ange since the beginning and it fits the naming pattern better (with Kyrie etc) so while I can't speak for the project personally it seems veeery unlikely they'll switch now.

Klashikari
2009-05-01, 04:42
As varion (here, happy valdra? :heh:) said, the UMG are definitely nowhere close to what we can call "official".
For that matter though, we still have sent an e-mail to Ryukishi about the possible "official" romaji, explaining from our side why we used "Ange".

That is to say, I'm certainly not in favor for "enje/enjye" either as it isn't concistent with the western pattern at all.
If you are curious, the pattern is as follow:

1) Ryukishi used "Kyrie" instead of "Kirie" (which should be the natural romaji of that japanese name). With Assumu around, the references to Ragnarok Online are quite big, as we have put on the grimoire (thanks to an anonymous source, but it became effective after some check).

2) Even if it isn't a common occurence, Ange is also a first name in French

3) Ange is the french word for "Angel"

4) Considering Ange's role in episode 3 and 4, that name is very fitting if you take its prime definition.

Jan-Poo
2009-05-01, 07:29
Well they are supposed to be western names written in Kanji, and Enje (or even worse "Enjye") is certainly not one. I wonder why Ryukishi didn't write those names in romaji to make clear what's the original source. Or did he?

'Enjye' is the Roman characters you would type to get the Japanese syllables used for her name. The name is actually pronounced 'En (like end without the d) je (like in jet)'. Or NJ, if you prefer.

Also, while we did ask 07th-expansion about the official spelling, they've just started their 'pairs' popularity contest' and their 'most suspicious person contest' on their website. And after that they have a little thing called EP5 to write. So it'll probably be a long while before they respond, if they do at all.

Remember that Japanese have a very restrictive way to prononce certain sounds etc.
For instance, Battler's name is pronounced "Batora", which is arguably very different to its actual way to write it (and optionally, how english community would call him so).
As a little trivia, Keiichi's romaji was originally "Keiti", and Higurashi was "Higurasi". So you can tell it is not really a foulproof joy.

I assume Ange is considered as a "spoiler character", as much as the stake girls, considering Ryukishi didn't even list them on the site so no wonder why there is still no media to put her official name.
And to be frank, I wonder if Ryukishi already thought about the actual romaji name for her to begin with.

Ah true that's yet another problem with romanizations. "Keiti" and "Higurasi" is what you get by using he "Kunrei" system. It looks like Japaneses use both "Kunrei" and "Hepburn" randomly but any western official and unofficial translation group uses invariably the "Hepburn" system, which is the one we are all used to know.

I wonder why "kunrei" is even still taught in Japan, there isn't really much point in it and it only causes confusion.

Anyway there's really no reason to adapt to the UMG, one should not fall under the impression that being a japanese speaker means to know how to make good transliterations, this is hardly the case.

O_o seriously?

I understand that you get to write "tu "si" and "ti" instead of "tsu" "shi" and "chi" but what about "jya" "jyu" "jyo" and "jye" instead of "ja" "ju" "jo" and "je"? they might be less common but overall i really don't see much gain @_@

tobiast88
2009-05-01, 18:39
Kunrei follows the logical construction of the hiragana/katakana table: "r-line"= ra, ri, ru, re, ro, "t-line"= ta, ti, tu, te, to, even though "ti" and "tu" are pronounced "chi" and "tsu". Same for the je/jya: pronounced the same, but "jya" retains the "y" in the little "ya" in じゃ.
So Hepburn is pronunciation-based, kunrei is construction-based. That's it, really.

Ignoring what spelling is considered official, and that Ange sounds much better in english regardless... The 4th motion graphic itself, is there much in the way of spoilers (beyond the current english patch)? I've watched the others too many times and it's oh-so-tempting to watch the 4th one, but when I saw the scene with Ronove, Virgilia and the gold haired+red dress+red hat (but not within the current patch) character, I figured I should ask first.

I have finished up to the current patch, and although I've seen fanart of some of the yet-to-be-introduced characters beyond the current patch, I'd rather not be spoiled for scenes or know about them.

Hopefully someone can tell me. :)

izmosmolnar

The temptation to watch it is high since most of us are considerably thirsty to some new infos (hence the reason we debate such silly trivial things pages long), but if it's so heavy on spoilers I definitely avoid it. It's a lot more enjoyable to go WTF watching the game, than feeling confused and semi-spoiled by watching the motion graphic. (Of course pay no heed to us, we know full well everyone have a life. Few months extra wait definitely won't kill anyone.)

Well, it still says that my locale is wrong etc, but if i right click and go to system menu and title back, i get the main menu and i see text and everything right from there onwards.

I tried playing it a bit and everything seemed to work as usual. Even all the kanjis and stuff show correctly (atleast in the grimoire), so i think you just need to remove that locale check and it'll work just fine. Good work. :D

Sonozaki Futagotachi

Hmm, but if you still get the "locale wrong" message, it's because the script couldn't find one of the sound files with characters in the name. That likely means the file (and others) didn't get copied over correctly during installation.

You will need to change your locale to Japanese and redo the installation, but after that you can change the locale back to normal and the new onscripter-en executable should still find the Japanese-named files. And now you'll get to hear all the music you should!

Of course, let me know if there's still a problem ^^

They are equivalent to the AMV
But while the AMV (Anime Music Video) mainly use anime scenes + some music playing on the background, a MAD does not restrict to anime, they can use images/animation from manga, games, anime, live-action stuff, random images, etc...

That's unfortunate. You likely need to copy the BGM, ME, SE, and sys_se directories from the Umineko installation DVD to the installed location, in order to make sure you have all the sound effects. That's how i generally installed it, by copying the folders, generally it shouldn't matter because if i use applocale to run the game, i can hear music that has a fully kanji filename. For example the one that plays when maria reads the letter in ep 1.
Just for clarification: I can't hear it with the new executable except when using applocale.

While i'm by no means knowledgeable about onscripter, can't you just use something like the setlocale function to set the locale to japanese? The program seems to be written in C++, so the function call setlocale(LC_ALL, "Japanese"); should suffice.
