It is still genderless as of the current point of the manga. English just feels awkward if it refers to people as its (the genderless pronoun), so subbers tend to attribute a gender to Crona.

It's one of the final scenes of Hayo Miyazaki's Spirited Away where Chihiro and Haku are falling from the sky after Chihiro told him his true name. Whoever drew this must have been watching it at the time. :) It's a gorgeous movie, I recommend it to anyone who likes strange, supernatural worlds. (Not scary though.)

It was from the end of volume 12 of Soul Eater. I decided to scan it. The artist is Tonogai Yoshiki. You might know the artist from the manga Doubt and the manga version of Himatsubushi-hen of Higurashi.
