Black Star was my favorite Soul Eater character (until I've read Kid's intro xD)
He's a parody of an annoying and typical shounen character. I like it that he has exagerrated those negative traits, because instead of annoying, it turned out to be so damn funny xD Man, I love crack xD
But if Black Star's serious, he could actually be so awesome :) Yay for Black Star!
As for Tsubaki, she's a lovely girl :) Lucky for Black Star to have someone as nice and sweet as her for a partner :) I admire her for being so selfless! Oh she's terrific :)

oh please. Naruto Star is a total clone with blue hair instead of orange. He is about every bit is anoying. I say get rid of him, and let Maka have Tsubaki and Soul as weapons
The thing that makes Blackstar salvageable and interesting/tolerable as a character is the "Wiley Coyote" effect. His ego slams him to the pavement every time. He suffers consequences for being an asshat. It makes him far more tolerable than the sorts of characters he represents - it actually makes him funny.
It does make you wonder about Tsubaki's "stand by her man" determination :)
Everyone in this series is a little bit dysfunctional - it lifts them out of stereotype cardboard just enough that even if you don't like the archetype, *these* characters are bit easier to swallow.

Like Vexx mentioned, when he does things like that it comes back to bite him in the end. Or during the fight against Mifune he was nearly killed because of his antics. So it's not like he acts like that without consequence. When it comes down to it he can get serious and be one of the most dangerous guys out there.
Full props to Tsubaki though for sticking by him. She can see the good qualities and does all she can to support Black Star. Of course someone like her could get someone else. The variety of weapons and her personality would be easy to work with. But she sticks with Black Star so you know the guy is worthwhile.

Thats an interesting thought. I don't really know how Tsubaki stands him, I find him annoying, but at other times I kind of like him. He is definetily more bearable than Naruto.

Well interesting stuff from episode 5. Seems like with his soul type would be hard to find a partner for Black Star. While Tsubaki is the type that could work well with most. Have to say the images for their souls was pretty entertaining. Though that episode had to be rough on Tsubaki overall. Did seem for a bit there that Black Star got taken out for good this time. Luckily it all turned out alright.
Was a surprise to hear Black Star called a genius....well at least in how he can use wave lengths to attack opponents.
Since he is a stereotype for shonen leads, it wouldn't be unusual for him to be some sort of battle genius, revealing hidden potentials and breaking limits when he gets serious.
Being a genius at using his soul wavelengths is similar to having kyubi, bankai, going to a higher gear or even 'spin on'.
He's quite a cool character to me, but I wouldn't like him as much if there wasn't Tsubaki, they are a great team to watch.

It's prodigy. Makes a lot more sense.
He's not really a stereotype though. I don't ever remember anyone being as over the top egotistical as he is.

Well true though since he's got a hard soul to be compatible with its not like she has too much to worry about. Just shows she cares though and wouldn't want to lose him. Somewhat ironic since he's the one that should be a bit worried with her being really compatible and a great person overall.

Between Black Star and Naruto: I think Black Star actually has more natural skill as a ninja/assassin, while Kyuubified Naruto simply has more potential--and retardedly high stamina. As for mental ability... it's probably safe to say that they're equally stupid. :D
But I digress. The cool thing about Black Star is that he's not entirely talk. They made him out to be such a dumbass that by the time he actually managed to pwn someone, I found myself cheering for the kid.
Black Star and Tsubaki make a terrific pair. Tsubaki's a super sweet gal with brain to even out Black Star's brawn. The show hints at a possible romantic attachment on her end, but don't they always do that in a shounen series? ...Hope they don't play that up, as Black Star could probably use a dog trainer more than a girlfriend.

I hate Narutos shouting about never giving up all the time, while Black Stars shouting about surpassing God is alot more entertaining.
I wouldn't mind seeing some sort of relationship development between Black Star and Tsubaki. But then I think no one can have Tsubaki as she is just uber cute!:love: shes all mine I tell you!
I want to see more from Black Star I think he has potential but he is not using it to his fullest . I would love to see soul synchro of Tsubaki and Black in the future.

Am pretty curious myself to see what a soul resonance with that pair could accomplish. Have seen what the other two main teams can do, so hopefully we'll see that eventually.

I think it may be that he never loses his confidence at any point really and continues to always believe everything he says. Or something.

B*S is around 13. Tsubaki's age has never been given, but I'd say it's a toss-up between her and Liz being the oldest of the group. With her height, 17ish, maybe?

Anyone think that Black Star being so annoying and everyone hating him is what the author is trying to do so it backs up how Tsubaki is one of the few people that can be his partner?

We are talking about personality wise, both are stuck up and arrogant and both were raised without parents and both are/were hated for something other people did (kyuubi attack), so in many ways they are similar but when Black Star is serious he is like Sasuke-esque/Kakashi-esque

But suppose that's how he is, a personality flaw that makes things more interesting.
Wonder if Tsubaki will ever get all the souls necessary with the way things are going. They could dominate most enemies, but unless Black Star is focused things won't go well. She really has excellent patience and definitely is someone that Black Star is lucky to have. During his adventure in episode 9 stayed behind to go as far as polishing the library :D.
I guess everyone manages to deal with his personality. Good friends with Soul and aside from some Maka chops can't be on bad terms with Maka.

I'm wondering if we'll ever see anyone in Soul Eater complete their weapons. I can't think it would be for a while since that would make things a lot easier for them.
As for why he is the way he is, perhaps it is somehow related to his past and family which we don't know a lot of details about.

He doesn't really bother me much, and quite franky he can be mature when he wants to. I just accept that part of his personailty that makes him different from most people, plus it leads to quite a bit of humor in the series. It's phase that he'll gradually grow out of when he's get older anyway.
I find him entertaining and it would be boring if he were too normal, especially when he plays off Maka and Kidd so well.

Well this was definitely a great episode for those two especially for learning more about them. Tsubaki having joined Shibusen in order to hunt down demon blades.
Also how Black Star's family being assassins that would do just about anything for payment. No doubt that would have made enemies all over the place. Wouldn't have thought that his family was wiped out by Shibusen and then he was taken in by them. Guess since he was so young its hard to have much of a connection to his family. Instead he's been hated by those that recognize his background.
Doubt it's the kind of story Black Star would talk to a lot of people about. Though shows how he feels by being willing to talk about that kind of stuff. Also nice of him to put her feelings about using him aside. They are partners so its only natural to help each other out when they have problems that need to be taken care of. Nothing wrong with her relying on him when she needs to. He might act a bit out there at times, but he's there for her.

I like Black Star, he reminds me more of Urahara in Bleach than any other character. They might be goofy on the exterior but there's some really dang good skill backing them up.
Also like the fact that while he comes off as a brute force fighter personality, he's anything but. Only a very skill technician could use all the differnt Tsubaki weapon modes.
If they could get to the point in their relationship where Tsubaki would anticipate that Black Star would need and change modes without having to shout out, it would make them even more formidable... Course BS likes shouting any ways so it's pretty moot :p.

Managed to trick Mifune into thinking they were using the ninja blade and instead it was dummy star mode. Right now calling out the changes is probably the best they can do. Even if the opponent knows what weapon is coming how it will be used can still surprise them.
Having multiple modes is a great asset, but only if the user is skilled enough to make the most of it. He's done a good job with techniques for the different modes. Like trap star and speed star. Combining that with his ability to attack directly with his soul wave and they really are a great team. Even if Black Star doesn't have the ability to see souls.

Black Star continues to evolve as a character and so far I find Tsubaki's and Black Star's back stories to be the most interesting.

The guy really showed some insight and how well he knew Tsubaki. Sure he made a big show on the statue and had that incident with speed star. But he knew how important this was and right through to the end of Tsubaki's performance, he was solid.
With the hug that was really touching, letting her know about his past, and when he asked her if she wanted to remain his weapon. He's growing and in her way so is Tsubaki. I'm sure before no matter how sad Tsubaki was she would keep it in. Wouldn't have had an outburst against her brother either saying that Tsubaki does indeed have a scent.
Really am liking Black Star a lot more after these last couple episodes.

But yeah I really liked Tsubaki's brother as a villain. A good guy that just walked down a dark path until he became someone that had to be stopped. If he realized that and let Tsubaki take his soul he'll stay right up there. Hard to tell if Tsubaki got a hit that killed him or that when he touched her soul he realized he had misunderstood her.

Not to mention that charge was really impressive in itself. I'm willing to believe she did some damage since nothing there to disprove it.
Don't think it was coincidence that she got her brother's ability. Probably during that realization he decided to do the only things he could for his sister. Recognize her true feelings, give her his soul, and along with it his weapon.

Thought it was a fairly interesting development at least for Tsubaki. Just reflecting her growing ability to speak up about her opinions. Clearly drew the line and refused to cross it no matter what Black Star said. Was certainly right that using the Fey Blade mode any further could put him in serious jeopardy. He was already at the limit after trying to stop Eruka from injecting the black blood.
Do wonder if it will end up meaning anything overall. Since has to be the first time she refused to do something he asked in the middle of a fight. Though I'm sure Black Star will understand her point of view. Well after he regains consciousness :heh:.
Surprising when you realize its been a few months since this topic got any posts at all.
He is exactly like Tiax from Baldurs Gate.. lol

You know i used to hate Black Star ... but after reading the Manga.. he isn't so bad..
The manga improved my opinion of him slightly. I still think he's an example of how power and ambition shouldn't be used, but he's entertaining in a teeth-grittingly annoying kind of way. ;) Also, him and Tsubaki as a team are lovely.
Black*Star and Tsubaki are the best team !!

I love this team, mostly because they embody one of my favorite pairings: Naruto & Hinata.
The characters fit the motif flawlessly, with the exception that Tsubaki actually has the guts to stand up to her partner at points which I actually applaude her for since someone has to knock the idiot down a peg.
The interact the same way I always invisioned my ideal pairing would, opposite who draw off each other to at least somewhat balance out the flaws in their characters.
Just look at the mini-arc where they had to capture Tsubaki's brother, nuff said.
But aside from my pairing fantasies, they just work together. Definitely as a team, possibly as something more, but the first is all I need in terms of approval.
They compliment each other great, they're interesting enough on their own or paired(not necessarily in a romantic sense) with others, and they develop nicely.
And there's my two-cents.

Bit curious about the talk of another presence in Tsubaki. Obviously key to mastering the Fey Blade mode and bringing their strength up another level. Though what that actually means and how they will achieve that is something I'm uncertain about. Latest fight in episode 28 just reflects how great a weapon and character Tsubaki is.
Just nice to see growth with the characters. Unlike episode 2 or even parts of the fight against Tsubaki's brother; Black Star was pretty serious throughout. Wasn't going around talking about how Big he was or goofing off while using Speed Star. Just some straightforward fighting in order to try and win this rematch. Obviously didn't get the result, but good to know when its time to be serious.
Tsubaki also did a good job asserting herself at various points. Using the smokebomb when Black Star was in a bad spot and trying to keep both sides from continuing the fight when it was clearly done.
Besides some focus on this team in an episode makes a post a worthwhile thing.
Tsubaki's hot. That means that she's the perfect too to drive confessions out of zombies with.
At episode 28 Mosquito do good comments about Tsubaki.
And Aracne is very similar to Tsubaki... Mother??

I think that's miss translation.
Arachne is the mother of all demon weapons (ie 1st creator). She's the one that first sacrificed a witch's soul to make them. I think they mention it in ep 27 i think.

I've been thinking this for a while though, isn't Black Star kinda like Asura (the Kisshin)? He seeks power for its own sake, to be better than other people. Asura explicitly did it out of fear of others, but Black Star certainly seems like he's afraid of being merely human, of being weak, of realizing his maximum potential and finding it wanting. So far he seems to trust Tsubaki, but what if it turned out that she was holding him back? What would he do? I can't imagine him giving up "godhood" without a fight.
I suppose that's unlikely to happen (if anything it's the other way around; him being frustrated about not being able to use her full potential), but I really have to wonder. What would he be like if he didn't have a partner like Tsubaki?

The reason he is going so far is to not be looked at as a child of a clan that did horrible things. He's definitely trying to get harder by pushing himself so far. Is possible he could lose it. He pushed himself too far against Asura and is pushing himself hard still with the Fey blade mode. Right now he still has Tsubaki that can keep him steady, but sooner or later he'll have to face those inner demons of his.
33 was good overall for this pair. Both in terms of getting closer to the presence inside Tsubaki, but also with her helping him out. Nice to see Tsubaki's growth with smacking him in the back of the head. Obviously it wouldn't hurt someone like Black Star that much but it sent the message. He even apologized and asked to leave the complicated talk to her.

I kinda agree. Though I by no means hate Black*Star (that is reserved for the child-abandoning whore Medusa:frustrated:), I must say that such a sweet and lovely girl like Tsubaki-chan deserves better than a rotten bloke like him. :(

Though definitely can understand the feelings on Black Star. Guy has a pretty good sized road to walk on to develop his character. Moved from making ridiculous proclamations from statues to getting more serious. But still has plenty of room to grow in terms of how he interacts with others.
Can accept Tsubaki's choice on who to stick with. Think he's let her be more outgoing. Since with the attention he tries to draw to himself no one will notice too much if she tries to leave her comfort zone now and then. Think going with the balance portion that they can both bring each other closer to the centre. Tsubaki speaking her mind more and being assertive. But also Black Star not being so obsessed with the past of his family and making himself stand out.

yeah... usually i absolutely loathe this type of character... but with black star i just cant help but love him. He may be an obnoxious brat at times but he definitely has his moments where you can see character development...
he is becoming a complete BAMF with all the power-ups... but they are well deserved i must say :cool:

There's no major manga spoilers in the fact that it 'Black Star' seems to be his actual name.
Minor manga spoiler: If the name of his father's anything to go by - White Star - it's something of a tradition in the clan, perhaps?

Well, the the pic we see of him is presumably Sid and Nygus' memory, making it understandable to mistake him for a relation of Black Star, given the timeframe. Considering where it turns up in the manga, I do think we're going to find out more about the past of the Star Clan.
White Star and his fellows ended up being taken out by Shibusen, and Sid compares Black Star to him whilst the boy is trying to defeat Kid.

PS. This is my first post.That episode was one of his better moments overall in the series. Supportive and showed how much he cared about Tsubaki. The hug offer was very nice since she really did need it. Too bad that damn kid cut the moment short :heh:.

Probably the same things as we see in the manga.
Baba Yaga is being attacked, so we'll probably black star coming in being able to use three forms of Shadow Star Chain of Blackness (http://souleater.wikia.com/wiki/Shadow_Star:_First_Form_-_Chain_of_Blackness), Severed Shadow (http://souleater.wikia.com/wiki/Shadow_Star:_Third_Form_-_Severed_Shadow), and Branched Darkness (http://souleater.wikia.com/wiki/Shadow_Star:_Fourth_Form_-_Branched_Darkness).
As well we'll probably see him using Soul Authority (http://souleater.wikia.com/wiki/Soul_Authority) (Soul Purge or Soul Threat for those of you who still trust fansubs/scanalations and their crappy translations). And his own Planet Destruction Cannon (http://souleater.wikia.com/wiki/Planet_Destruction_Cannon).

There are <i>only</i> unofficial translations for the later manga and anime at this point. We have the 'crappy' translations because there are no others. So long as they get the main point across correctly, the smaller details are perhaps less of an issue.

Well the issue is not that the translations are crappy, but that people trust them far to much.
Fansubs and scanalations are known to do bad jobs at translating, and use very loose translations that stray from the actual name. 威 has absolutely nothing to do with "Purge"ing.
A good wiki is the best place to get the translation. Kanji and romaji are noted, as well for most of the more debatable names you can usually find more details or rationales for the use of the name on the talkpage. Not like fansubs where one or two people control the entire translation and it can't be mutated after being distributed.
The real point here actually is that a number of people still think that Stein uses "Soul Purge" and Black Star created "Soul Threat", when in fact they are actually the exact same move with the exact same name, people just read different translations and ended up spreading misfacts.

Oddly between my last post here and now I've caught up with the manga. Was a bit curious about Black Star's growth since the anime wasn't seeming to go there and couldn't stop reading :heh:.
Anyways do agree I'm sceptical of us seeing those forms in the anime. He hasn't seemed to go through the development necessary. Either they'll give a flashback to him training or somehow in the coming fights he'll somehow gain them. Or most likely he'll just fight with regular shadow star and hope for the best.
Honestly I'm a bit worried how it will end since they can't really give him the same opponent without the growth necessary to stand a chance. Would have been a great fight animated that's for sure.
I hope that they'll use Shadow Star as-is.
I'm not sure that the training/flashback route would work at this stage; there's too much of importance to pack into relatively few episodes. It worked in the manga partly, in my mind, because it had been quite some time since we'd seen anything of Black Star, plus the difference at the end of the Kid fight. Black Star of the anime has shown no such change in his loud tune.
It would have been a fantastic fight, but I don't see it happening. Hopefully they'll pull off something with him and Mifune in order to conclude that subplot (and hopefully speparate the samurai and witch from Arachnaphobia). I'm not a major fan of Black Star, but I'll admit I do enjoy his fights when he's actually paying attention.

I LOVE his style!! I wait just to see him every episode!1 He's so cool!! He's my favourite chracter. Then comes Stein, then Mifune, then Medusa, then Justin Law, then Kishin himself, whenever he's not grinning madly. Like when he just broke out of the Seals under Shibusen, and he saw Shinigami for the first time after however many years.
He looks really cool, that Kishin guy.
But Black Star owns that anytime. The difference between Black Star and Naruto is that Black Star is NOT ALL TALK!! He says he will surpass god and you KNOW he will eventually OWN even sTein, somehow, cos he's SOOO COOL!!!

When Blackstar first came on screen, the first thing I thought of was, "Oh god, it's Naruto...again," but now, I think I'm totally in love with him. He's my favorite character in both the manga and the anime now.
And for Tsubaki...I've always liked her, so there's nothing much to say, except...she gets cooler and cooler as the story progresses.
Black Star is probably the main reason why I watch this show. He is pure entertainment. I am surprised how many people don't get his character. Maka is hella bland to me and Kid is funny, that is about it. BS is the man! =]
Funny how people keep saying "he's like Naruto but I like him in spite of that" - hell yeah, he is like Naruto and I like him because of it. XD

Black Star > Naruto!I ahve to agree with you on this point. While there are some simlarities between the two, there are also key differences. One of which is that Black Star can back his talk up. Maybe earlier Black Star had the problem of not being able to back things up, but now he really can. Besides now that he can he doesn't talk big like that so much anyways. After what happened with Mifune and at Tsubaki's home he's had to change. The goal he's after is one in which he will have to carry the spirits of those who's dreams he crushes.
Anyways the key point remains that Black Star is a badass character and makes the series that much more entertaining.
