I'd give it about a 7 out of 10. Better then the last quarter or so of the TV series, but still has that more of the same feel.

Anyway, here's my summary and thoughts (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2008/09/28/lucky-star-ova/) if anyone is interested.

lol and konata goes "are you really japanese?":D

Yes, I didn't get that reference. Anyone knows?

There was even a mention of Blue Planet in the pet store sequence. Which is an expensive and awesome animal documentary.

I found it amusing that almost everyone (save Konata) was animated left-handed for the volleyball match.

Just about everybody in Lucky Star is left-handed, with the exception of Minami, Mr. Hiiragi, and one or two others. Konata is ambidextrous.

I enjoyed it --- it was entertaining without having to know a single "reference" gag (though a couple of references were just annoying...)

I *even* liked Lucky*Channel because we get to see the two VAs live-action behaving like goofballs.

Now that I understand that the entire volleyball segment is a parody of the Attack No. 1 anime (http://www.dannychoo.com/detail/mac/eng/image/8324/Attack+No.1+an+anime+that+was+unintended+to+be+hil arious.html) it makes it even funnier. The part where Konata says "are you really Japanese" is probably referring to the line "The tears are coming, she's a girl" which is a from the theme song of Attack No. 1 which I guess was really popular, thus causing her to chide Kagami for not knowing it.

Now that the subs are out I can finally emerge.

I think that Patty called Cherry a "tuna" because she was lying so still. I heard that "maguro" (tuna) is a way to reference someone lying still, like a tuna. Correct me if I'm wrong. No offense meant to the tuna, but when they're dead they don't move around much. :P

I loved the OVA. My favorite sequence was probably Kagami's dream. She and Konata were their true awesome selves in it, despite it being not "real". Tsukasa's reaction to poor Kagami's exclamation at the end had me laughing the hardest out of anything.

The MMO was hilarious. You've all said pretty much everything I was thinking about it. Tsukasa was very funny. She was very funny through this whole thing, wasn't she?

The volleyball game was adorable, and the animation was a pleasure to watch. And hey, we actually got some insight into Tsukasa's inferiority complex... but watching her poor self get smacked around by the ball and the net was funnier.

I liked the hike, because I love the interactions between the four of them and that's all that it was.

The horror movie sequence was confusing. I've seen these kinds of sequences before, but for the life of me I can't remember where. It looked like one or two old (showa era?) movie clips I'd seen that freaked me the hell out... I'm usually pretty slow to catch onto references, was it referencing anything in particular (besides Keroro Gunso)?

Not gonna comment on Lucky*Channel because I gave up watching it after the sound threw off.

Thanks a ton to the person who subbed this! I highly appreciate your work! I really had a lot of fun watching this one, and it was a real delight just to see everyone again. I sure love these characters. Yeah, I still hope for more...someday. Now I'm gonna sit around and pretend that Kagami's words at the end of her dream were a result of repressed passion for her "fairy godmother".... ::cough::

PS - Good to see you finally make an appearance, Nuke. :3

Hey, you never know, right? The series IS pretty popular as far as I know, so it's not impossible that they might do another OVA later. (Though I doubt they'll continue the TV-series.)

I think it's somewhere around here...still, it made me laugh when I watched for the first time and the subs said: *Otaku Mode*

Oh yeah, at the end of the 3rd scene, wasn't that like a Hidamari Sketch moment? Tsukasa was making a crazy face and everything. I know Kagami was tricked in her dream to say something like that, but still you can't help but think about it. And I think another reference in the 6th scene would be to Macross Frontier with how similar Miyuki and Sherry look. Another weird fact to me was, did anyone see that art of Minoru? It's kind of strange because he appeared all demented and bent in the scene.

On a few extra notes, I have to go along with Kaioshin Sama on that whole voice actor thing. KyoAni probably has tons of money, would it kill to get some more for extras? I mean, the woman who sounds like Freiza works for those old women you see around the show, but not for 3 different looking teenaged girls.

Well SZS was basically just doing a nod to old movies, so you can either take it as Lucky Star doing that, or it's a SZS parody. Either way works if you ask me.

mmmmmm, nope. They are in their senior year at the end of the series but they're in the middle of a talent festival. They are worrying about their prep and university entry exams.
They *could* do any number of OVAs in those timeless "in between" moments.

In the manga, time is running much slower (i.e. "senior year" may last forever at the rate they're moving).

I speculate that the author will eventually move the girls to university in the manga. There are a number of campuses that actually have the full K-12 *and* university in one spot (e.g. Waseda University (http://www.waseda.jp/top/index-e.html)) so they wouldn't necessarily be separated that much - even from the lower aged classmates. A friend of ours is finishing her last year in high school after spending a year in the US. Her "old" classmates now in university on the same campus still see her almost daily.

Those of you who read Negima will note that the Mahora Academy is organized in the same way with K-12+university.

Just watched it. For me, it didn't really feel like a normal LS episode. Usually there's some silly funny scenes, then some token KyoAni mush scenes. There weren't really any like that here, except maybe Tsukasa's feelings after the volleyball match.

They had very distinct and relatively long 'arcs' in this OVA. In the normal series there would be several skits, some of them very short. In the OVA, each arc seemed to pander to the fans of each individual girl: Dream - Kagami, Volleyball - Misao/Tsukasa, Hike - Miyuki, Dog - Minami.

I just didn't feel it with this OVA. Didn't laugh nearly as much as in a regular ep, despite it being almost twice as long. A big factor is probably the absence of Konata's dad and Cousin Yui, the harbingers of several laughs in the series.

The OVA can still redeem itself with a good Lucky Channel, which I haven't seen yet since it's not subbed.

I just realized the "super (very long name) attack" that Konata used to serve her volley in the volleyball sketch is exactly the same serving attack Haruhi used in the table-tennis scene in "Lone Island Syndrome - Part 1" episode of Suzumiya Haruhi. Of course, no prize for guessing that they're both done by Hirano Aya.

Good fun. Always nice to see the girls back in all their goofy glory.

Like many others, I loved the MMORPG segment. By the way, Nanako's still single because she obviously spends too much time behind the PC, not because she's not beautiful enough. :p

Kagamiku...cute overload. :heh:

Hmm, I didn't quite like the volleyball segment. But it's a nice mushy moment for Tsukasa, nonetheless.

As for the horror segment, not sure what the references are meant to be. But I trust that hard-core anime fans would soon discover what they are, if there are any.

Oh...Konata wasn't so much AFK as she was possibly being a vendor-bot in the Tenchou segment. That's fairly common in many MMORPGs.

Finally, I enjoyed the live-action Lucky Channel, although it's a shame that the cranky version of Akira didn't feature. Off-the-wall humour, as usual, and utterly hilarious, as expected. :D

Indeed. And even though it wasn't quite correct, I still found the subtitles really funny in that scene. "Super mega special mecha awesome chocolate-dipped shining flaming glowing incredible serve!"

i can agree with the "everyday occurance" part. out of all the stories, putting the magic aside, this one felt the most lucky star like... for me anyway. coz one of the main appeals of the series was the konata-kagamin interaction, and this one is totally what the original was like.:D

I agree with Trueno about the Konata-Kagami interaction bit, but also with Vexx on the MMO scene having the most Lucky*Star feel overall. And yes to the character development in the volleyball scene. Lucky*Star is an anime where character development almost never really happens, so I appreciated the very brief change of pace.

Finally got around to watching this and it was good to see the cast again--thought the dream sequence was going to be my least favorite part, but the references to other anime made it more entertaining (any time Keroro has a cameo it's awesome, and Shiraishi as Mujaki from Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer at 34:12 made me do a double-take, you don't see a huge amount of UY references these days). If I had to pick, I'd say Konata's Kagami costume changes was my favorite part of the OVA though :D A little disappointed in Lucky Channel, it's just jarring to see real-life characters somehow...

Does anyone know if this OVA is going to be part of the R1 release? I'm assuming no, or that it would have to be licensed and released separately down the road.

I have some speculation but my files are gone so I can't double check, :upset:. Maybe someone else can do the work of checking :D(Update, found some videos for some of the stuff).

The first one looks like an "Ice Slash" combo with Frog/Crono and Marle from Chrono Trigger.(Second Attack in video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RMqY_pBKAlU&feature=related The ice is off and it only features the ending part of the combo, I'm sure there's something that fits Nanako's attack closer.

The third combo reminds me of Gen's super combo from Street Fighter Alpha where he slides across the screen to the opponents backside and the opponent is hit with several hits after. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqqQwNy2qwk&feature=related This one is pretty spot on I think, unless there's someone who does a similar flourish with a knife or something ;p.

The second combo with the stab and the punch seems so familiar, I just looked through Xenogear death blows and FF XI weapon skills, none of those though... Anyone out there with more gaming experience or a fresher memory able to enlighten us? ;p, the gamer in me is curious.

I think the references in the OVA warrant a new post in the ref list thread.

It feels really weird. The OVA made it very apparent every half minute that they're referencing something, but I don't get most of them. The best laughs I could get were Tsukasa in the RPG, the Hatsune Miku section, and the Code Geass-Zetsubou Sensei-Keroro Gunso triumvirate in the end. The rest felt almost awkward, as if they're filtering out the otakus by seeing who laughs and who gets antsy.

Typically, the AS stance is that OVAs must be licensed separately from any series that has been licensed. Its a bit unusual for a license to automatically cover all current and future releases related to a brand. Just check the "is licensed" sticky for any unusual details.

Finally got around to watching this, and it was utterly random and hilarious.

Makes me wish there was a season 2. Q_Q

I kinda wish that they would liscence it (though because of how much time a release would take, I wouldn't mind if they waited for the rest of us to watch it first), because I'd really like to own it myself. In a format that my DVD player can work with, that is. :)

I wasn't even aware that a group had released it, all I knew of was an individual on crunchyroll.

Wait, are we talking American distribution? I'd prefer it if Bandai reserved the license for this OVA.

That Ova was weird.

Yeah, I hope Bandai handles it. They always have such nice DVD box sets and extras and stuff... and are quite good at making me spend a lot of money.

I've added what I know of the references in the OVA, as well as what I didn't know that 2ch users apparently do, to the ANN trivia page (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/anime.php?id=9842&page=22) (mine are the last 37 entries or so). Feel free to add to it if you'd like.

dunno if these are the same or not. but in the camping story, when it turns night time, is the bgm the same as the haruhi one? you know, when koizumi was talking to kyon about haruhi in the taxi (ep13) and once in lone island syndrome.

They certainly sound similar, but they're not the same background music. "Kaidan no Kyoufu" is a Lucky Star original (it first played during Konata's scary story in episode 6).

You all will be happy to know one of the best translators (imo) of the Lucky Star series just released a torrent submission for the OVA.

Carry on, space cadets.

Finally! EnAglish sub. :heh:

Finished it. Brilliant subs! Except for a few minor musings here and there, I'm impressed. They even translated (a little) of the MMO menus, changed the two screens (Golden Week is over, Reproduction of video blah blah blah). It'll be good if they even translated the:

equipments and weapons Anime Tenchou was paddling.

Good job!

Since the OVA has been released we no longer need a "Expectations and Speculation" thread. Please post in the Lucky Star OVA Discussion (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=72681) thread instead :)

equipments and weapons Anime Tenchou was paddling.

The weapons are, from top to bottom: Excalibur, Caliburn, Durandal, Laevateinn, Dainslef, Gram, Claiomh Solais, Caladbolg, Fragarach, and Hrunting.

What I remember of the armor is that it had Abbandon Plate, Sapphire Cloth, Crocodile Skin, Mithril Plate, and then a bunch of stuff with names no one has been able to decipher.

It is already subbed btw. And the subs are not that bad too.

Cherry is still as cute as ever lol.
