If it's true, it'll probably be more of the same of the later episodes as opposed to the earlier ones, where they fiddled with character interaction and personal situations.

The later episodes offer a greater character selection than the earlier ones because more characters were introduced in the second half of the series. All of the character will probably be featured but I expect it to remain focused on Konata, Kagami, Tsukasa, and Miyuki. For the Lucky Channel segment, I expect Minoru, and maybe even Akira, to become part of the regular show. They will not be main characters, but part of the show nevertheless.
I would love to see a teenaged boy, possibly Minoru, call one of the main characters, probably Konata, over the phone pretending to be a girl about Yutaka's age. During the call he sets her up on a date with himself. What Minoru did not count on is she has genuine feelings for the "girl who never was". Realizing he can not hide what he has done, Minoru confesses and discovers that he is a "lucky star". This is what I would like to see but I sincerely doubt it will happen. The idea might make a good Lucky Star fanfic if I decide to take the time and effort to write one.
I'd be perfectly fine with no Lucky*Channel (or an abbreviated bit with Akira just ranting about the time and then running out of time).
I'd really rather *not* see any anime-only material (I got plenty of that during the series). I'd like to see elements of and sketches from volume 4 or 5 animated at least.

I guess I could theoretically blog this, I'm just not expecting terribly much beyond what the TV Series had to offer, which started off interesting and then just.....well....................:heh:

I'm just wondering if this OVA will take place after their graduation or shift focus to the underclassmen of Lucky*Star (frick, I have forgotten their names!!!0_0).
It would be cool to see what they're up to after high school...I might be a bit disappointed if its set somewhere in between any of the series episode.
So this may be obvious already, but Kyoto Animations will be doing this project right?
:heh: just checking....

That is the most important question. Most probably. If not, then it's possible our friend Kaioshin might finally give his two thumbs up. (Nah just kidding KS, I still love ya. )
Anyway, OVAs are probably the best way to keep the franchise suitably milked and keep LS fans happily sedated without having to suffer from withdrawal symptoms as the Haruhiists are suffering already. :heh:
Already from the anime series, LS's 4-koma style and "slice of life" theme has allowed the writers to adapt things freely at their own pace without being too constrained by the pace of the original by Yoshimizu.

Greetings!
You pop an interesting question: for any anime series past or present, has fanfiction/doujinshi ever been tapped as original resource material? The slightest hint I heard is a fanfiction writer was contacted by an animation house was for Ramna 1/2. My dad recalls that one or two fans actually had their scripts produced for the old Star Trek show, so I guess it's not impossible. I'm just a babe in the woods, but my best guess with L*S is that the OVA is a season 2 surrogate, especially what the American market. IMO L*S's humor is far too sublime for action/blood&guts driven anime America (even the PPG was like that), and I regret L*S would have as much chance here as the few romance anime there is. From what I hear on-line, outfits as the Cartoon Network weren't exactly hopping up and down over L*S at the NY Comics show. I think we might have to rest content with L*S continuing on as DVDS instead of a season two.
IF a season two, how to "adapt" L*S for America? I agree with Vexx: prune out the heavy anime and Jap product/TV references for starters. Maybe if you substituted such with American counterparts it might work, but the work involved would probably be prohibitive. So, back to basics; drill the manga itself as source material. If we go that route, then how far could that original material get you? I haven't seen any L*S mangas past volume one so I don't know roughly how many mangas packs one episode, but judging from volume one you might be able to put away what – two or three per episode? Also remember the series stuffed a lot of scenes that weren't in the manga too, like the beach thing. Can you exhaust all L*S manga source material before you finish a full second season? I dunno. (If it does, then it begs the wild imagination of what a latter second or even a wistful third season might be like; almost all non-Yoshimizu material? That might even be good thing!) I think the OVA route avoids all this via drips and dabs of manga on a DVD and maybe that's how L*S will continue on (at least for Americans).
Maybe another thing going against a season two (here) is unless you make it a literal extension of season one, you either have to frequently flash over to the antics of the original quad in college or hope the "new group" can win over the hearts and minds of their fans, but I don't see that (unless they do a "Dallas" with season two with the original crew). Many fans have their faves welded to the first girls, and outside some yori teases, this new group to me doesn't feel all that unique or interesting (except perhaps Hiyori and one-foot-in-the-grave Yu-chan) to really grab a fandom. It might be necessary to go the Twilight Zone route a'la Yamato to really make a pure high school L*S season two interesting (hey, it sounds crazy, but those in the know would know that even "serious" and earthy daytime soap operas used to dip some pretty freaky and weird stuff to spice up the series!). Neither is trapping the quad in high school for another run (as "super seniors"?) out of the question – after all, we never got to their graduation! My stop's coming up so gotta close up.
Well, IMHO. Then I could be like Tsukasa – ALL wrong!! :)
Take care burning all!

Well it's speculation for now as the Comptiq magazine with all the information isn't out yet.
I read somewhere on the net that according to Moonphase Diary, (http://d.hatena.ne.jp/moonphase/), the release of the OVA is scheduled already this summer.
I can't read japanese so I'm not sure if this is official or not... Anyways, if this turned out to be true then 2 of my favorite Slice of life shows (Hidamari Sketch and Lucky Star) will be airing at the same time!!
I am really looking forward to this year's summer season!! :D
i heard about a possible ova, but didn't know that it would happen. i wonder if it will be a retelling of lucky star or continue where the series left off.

are you saying that the focus will move away from the original four (since they will graduate) and concentrate on yuu-chan's group?
amai.... the REAL problem: you really think konata and tsukasa will manage to graduate?:heh: they're gonna end up repeating lol

If Konata and Tsukasa failing was the only way to keep them in the OAV, it would definitely happen. I would say they might end up in summer school, but the Japanese school year is different. Do they even have a way to repeat a failed course without repeating the entire year?
So this may be obvious already, but Kyoto Animations will be doing this project right?

Really though should it honestly matter all that much. The content comes from the 4-Koma manga and Kadokawa regardless so the concern should lie with what strips are chosen to be animated. Not to mention that the final say on anything always goes to Kadokawa anyway as the holder of the license. The best any contracted studio can do generally is run their ideas before them and have them either approved or denied. We all know what happened last time Kadokawa decided that Kyoani wasn't doing good enough right?

You mean the part that says 京都アニメーション in plain (well if you have good eyesight since it's a dark scan) sight. I can see it obviously, but that wasn't the point I was trying to make when talking about the ANN article which doesn't feature the scans. 2ch is after all the same source people had for episode 03 of Code Geass being completely rewritten which didn't come to pass and caused a huge uproar in the community anyway as a result. I'm just surprised (or am I) that ANN would use 2ch for anything after that incident.

So apparently the plot is going to revolve around (as in central theme) a battle of wits between Konata and the Anime Tenchou, and it doesn't sound like the other characters are really going to factor in too much. The Anime Tenchou being a feature character gives Kadokawa the chance to really go at hawking their wares with their most popular property and through said property possibly enhance the sales of their other works and maybe pull themselves out of the red ink for the next quarter.
I don't mean to sound like too much of a downer, but this sure sounds like a pure cash in and I think at least Vexx will agree with me. Also people looking for more Kagami, Tsukasa and Miyuki; I'm not sure you should get your hopes up to much as the ad very much has Konata and Anime Tenchou in the foreground and everybody else in the background:
http://animehistory.wordpress.com/files/2008/05/luckystar2.png
Considering the Anime Tenchou trying to sell Kadokawa merchandise to Konata was my absolute least favourite part of the TV Series and amounted to little more than cheap commercialism in my opinion I think my expectations for this OVA are about as low as they could possibly go right now. I'm almost speechless......
Character placement in promos are usually pretty informative.... but there's not much else to say until we get closer to air date. ..........

Although it doesn't seem to interesting as of yet, I'm sure it will be enough to satisfy my longing for more Lucky Star.
This comes with absolutely no justification whatsoever, but my gut instinct is that this simply won't do as well as the original series. I will say that this is the best outcome I hoped for in terms of a follow-up...I believe an OVA is infinitely much better than an entire second season, which will cross the line and make people sick of the entire franchise.
I'll give a thumbs-up if this thing has any kind of storyline...but I doubt it.
Of course, I tend to jinx things to happen exactly opposite to what I expect them to.

But at 2009 according to MoonPhase? :(
Hi All:
Not to sound a shadow party pooper, but I'm starting to have a creepy feeling that the OVA will be a somewhat different animal than the series. KyotoAnimation by now would've felt the full impact and thrill of L*S's popularity and hype and will be riding a high horse which can very easy boomerang on them if they're tempted to play up that pop aspect (and marketing potential) in the OVA by not being canon with the manga or even the games but go a new "fan service" path to the extent that they end up parodying the series. Success, like spice, can spoil the soup if applied in excess.

Too damn true my friend!
I just hope that the OVA will tie up the loose ends after episode 24 ( although tht prolly wnt happen). Obviously I hope for more randomness!
konata + tenchou = epic win
Just so ya'll realize there's more than one viewpoint: for me, that would be an epic lose.... tenchou is an anime-only creation that I found entertaining for exactly one episode. I'd prefer that the OVA return to or stick to its roots (the 4-koma that the anime was derived from).
Unfortunately, it seems the characters and story are being co-opted as tools to push other franchises. Kind of like Snoopy being known more for the Met Life advertising than what it is he did in the first place that was so charming.

Well, already in the anime, Patricia stole the scene which belonged to Ko (Hiyori's Year 2 senpai), the one with Hiyori's early art.
Also, Fuyuki needs some love. Her and Hikari should get some scenes together.
Also, for the voice cast, I really would like to hear the drama CD cast for the OVA.
Didn't Tenchou have his own little series as well as being the mascot of Animate long before Lucky Star. It is more a revival than and anime-only character.

It worries me that every key character but my favourite (Miyuki) is on the latest promo art for the OVA. What did Kyoani just up and say "Well screw her she's like got Pink Hair....and ummmm KONATA!". If Miyuki gets shafted again like in the latter parts of the TV series then I'm not going to be impressed as I got more laughs out of her then any other character combined I think.

Miyuki gets quite a bit of love in the manga version. See her cry over telephone calls (that mistake her for her mother, and vice versa) and her mother's idiotic requests (centered on Minami's playing of the piano).

It worries me that every key character but my favourite (Miyuki) is on the latest promo art for the OVA. What did Kyoani just up and say "Well screw her she's like got Pink Hair....and ummmm KONATA!". If Miyuki gets shafted again like in the latter parts of the TV series then I'm not going to be impressed as I got more laughs out of her then any other character combined I think.Miyuki's just not as popular as the others. She's been touted as the moe machine inside the series, but she just pales in comparison to others. She also doesn't seem very deep, which probably hurt her in the polls.

Macronized Konata-sama FTW! I've mentioned it before but for the Hiiragi twins, Tsukasa is Ranka and Kagami is ... Alto!
Speaking of awesome purple-haired twins... I guess these could be the inspiration (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?p=1677601#post1677601) (look for the family pic).

She's still the funniest character I found. And she also has a less strictly moe antics side to her character. I would say that Tsukasa fills the straight up moe factor pretty much all the time followed by Konata, then Miyuki and then Kagami.
Konata I had mixed feelings about because of her tendency to be used a mouthpiece for certain real life products. Tsukasa was just sort of too ditzy for me to really grow attached to to any degree. Kagami was alright I think if exploited to much for the tsundere gag, but Miyuki had that sort of smarter then she looks, but ultimately clutzy character thing going that just ended in me getting more laughs out of her in the series early stretches then any other character. I noticed I tended to like and laugh at the series less the less screentime she got and the more Konata centric the series became. They just sort of overused Konata way to much in the latter episodes and marginalized a significant portion of the cast. I mean there's only so much interest I can take in a character that lives to buy Kadokawa Shoten merchandise and manifests as a glorified version of the Otaku's ideal girlfriend. Miyuki may not be deep, but I found her the least shallow and archetypal of the main group when I looked at her from a different perspective then what Konata pointed out.

I don't see how you found Miyuki to be less shallow than others. Miyuki didn't get the amount of screentime that others got, especially the extended scenes in the latter episodes about their families' lives etc.

Which is strange because she was shown to have a perfectly nice family they could have explored. Oh well, what's done is done.
And I meant less shallow in terms of overall personality, not character development. In looking at the main group I found that Konata was basically mostly about material interests. Tsukasa was basically a moeblob with no real backbone or purpose to act as other then a foil for Konata and Kagami....well Kagami was okay I think and I appreciated her displays of sisterly love and her often being the most rational of the group. Though like any of them she knew how to have a good time when it counted. Miyuki just clicked with me on some level I can't explain though, she was a friendly sort, she had common sense, she was talented, but humble, a bit klutzy........She kind of reminds me of the type of character Rick Moranis used to play.

Well, here's what the manga has to say about the Hiragi twins and Miyuki, in one sentence (my rough translation from my Chinese copy):
Tsukasa: A klutzy girl who lives life according to her speed (按照自己步调生活的糊涂少女)
Kagami: the normal person who never stops worrying (从不间断劳心的正常人)
Miyuki: The one who supports everyone in the dark (暗中支撑着大家的人)
Tsukasa may not be smart, but her simple mind is probably what most of us need after a tense day at work.

Well, yea. To me, Miyuki was always underplayed as the Lucky Star main trio's auxiliary or like a "bridge" between the trio and the "new" L*S batch. She always had a funny eye-candy draw mascot feel to me. Like you'd thought if she was so darn umber-moe they'd given her way more play. Maybe it was the salmon-blond thing that demoted her. :) Or maybe she was just "too perfect" and pumped-up would've dimmed out the others, what her trophy bod, computer brain, traditional etiquette, athletic prowess, the coy knockout-in-glasses thing, world-traveler keen and a kind of cute spaced-out social cluelessness reminiscent of Tsukasa (gee, I'm jealous of her already!). Though Miyuki wasn't deep into games, her performance in the ones she did play even floored Konata. She was almost like the trio all wrapped up in one bright curvy cheesecake package, and there might even be a "wild" side of Miyuki we haven't seen yet but that door's open since we know so little of her home life. I hope the OVA does her better this time 'round – at least better than the L*S games or Pocket Travelers and Murder Mystery. (I don't have the manga so I don't know how they treat her there). But what I really wanna know is how the heck she got so far in high school without any guys playing her tail! :D

Her wild side appeared when she played a DS game which Konata lent her (at the school library, no less). It was in the manga.

Not enough people bit into the whole clueless bookworm moe or whatever she is. Or maybe the fact that the others were more interesting to so many more people forced Miyuki into the shadows.

Well, the only member of Miyuki's immediate family that's never seen is her father. He does exist, as Miyuki once mentioned him in the "2 million yen blowout". Again, manga-only.
I like Miyuki's mom. She's so goofy.

Think of drama CDs as audio CDs, with no moving pictures. Lucky Star has at least 1 drama CD, with a cast that is stellar to say the least. Some names include Koshimizu Ami (CG's Kallen) as Kagami, Yukino Satsuki as Patricia, among others.
I do not have the translation, but one of the tracks involve Minami (Matsuki Miyu) meeting Yutaka (Shimizu Ai) for the first time.

Thanks! Well, I guess I can only hope to bump into that scan (forget the manga itself!) by dumb random luck once a blue moon! :( I hope they followed-up Miyuki being in and out "wild" like that in the rest of the manga, and it'd really be awesome done in the OVA but I'm not holding my breath that it's not just going to be a half hour of subliminal anime advertisements since L*S is riding so high over there.

So you're saying it's like a radio play on CD? That's interesting -- and means it'll probably be till the next asteroid strike when it comes out in English! :(
So sorry I don't really have the time to learn Japanese (or own a PS2) because I'd set up a site just to do translated transcripts of the manga and Lucky Star Ryouou Gakuen Outousai. No art. Just the pure text. Like my highest fantasy would be to fandub them but I'm lame at doing different voices! :( In fact I'm kinda surprised a fansub CD collection of fandubbed L*S stories all over the web hasn't popped yet!

Miyuki really needs a stage of her own to strut her awe and mystery, and that's why I just can't hardly wait for Desktop Animation Production to get perfected and released! It's going to be so cool to see KA get competition from their own characters under the hands of fan artists and dubbers!!

Eh, the polls and the general vibe from all the discussions.
I've never been very big on those types of popularity polls that can decide the fate of a character. I'd prefer to see them at least try to make her case a little more. Well they did....sort of? I don't know what else to say really other then that I'm disappointed if they actually did cave to the Otaku crowd who wanted as much Konata as possible even if it came at the expense of some other characters.

The way most of the polls look, you can definitely see that people liked the others more than Miyuki. Even side characters have more fans than her. So why should Kyoani try to make Miyuki's case? Do you suspect that would've made the show an even bigger success?
What can I say? 'Oh well'? If you don't like what everyone else likes, there isn't gonna be a lot out there in life that mingles well with your tastes.

Oh well, as Dad once said, more than a few comics heroes who started off as third bananas ended up with their own mag, especially in the Marvel universe. Most of you all would know way better than I...
That said, and noticing how even the Powerpuff Girls Z crowd have their own on-line fanzine manga by awesome Yuji Battakun (which looks EXACTLY like the official PPGZ manga), it'd be kinda nice to take aside one of these great Lucky Star fan artists who are spinning their wheels and churning out nice but repetitious Lucky Star artwork on Deviant Art and Raki-Suta and ask them to more productively (and excitingly) ply their pens or brushes or whatever to drawing online Lucky Star mangas under diff writers, only this time with a more prominent (or starring??) mysterious Miyuki for once! :) To me, as long as you follow manga canon and studied the tone of the original manga to capture the same look and feel that fans all agree on, it make no diff whether the strip's done by a deep-steeped fan or Yoshimizu Kagami himself (and really, since L*S struck gold as an anime just how much of that manga's REALLY done by him now, huh?). Like if it looks like a duck, walks like a duck...
Now the coolest thing to me is all these fan-created mangas and strips are just a tantalizing dress-rehearsal to the "real thing" via Desktop Animation Production. I got a peek at a raw "wireframe" version of this in Denver's "Toaster Works", (and it's kind of like a blend of theater and stage direction software and a morphing program on steroids which shapes your characters moves in motion. They're aiming for "Disney grade" animation quality). Shouldn't really be much longer before this stuff comes out, but it'll really change how pop anime and manga characters are viewed and featured. I mean imagine your fav (or original!) manga/anime characters in adventures and scenarios an animation studio wouldn't touch with a ten foot pole, but it looks just like they did it! Gee, imagine the impact on OVAs and the whole nine yards! Okay, okay, secretly I'd LOVE to be a voice talent for these fan animes, but if DAP prices fall to earth over time from the thousands I'm sure they'll debut as, I've a feeling there'll be plenty of regular and original fan anime characters to chose doing.
Anyway, that's my two yen on the issue (Go Yuki!).

We seem to be on a different page here. I'm in no way interested in success, I'm interested in what I see, what I receive from the series. Considering I won't be seeing a penny of the profits, big or bigger success, it doesn't matter to me, what matters is the overall content. And in that case I felt as well as wished her bit could have been more fleshed out and continue to hope (though given the synposis and promotional art with a lack of Miyuki entirely probably in vain) that she will be given some decent screen time in the OVA.

Officially-endorsed Hatsune Miku parody? Complete with LEEK? Obvious Yamaha advertising, but I've got to call it a win.
I guess this is the natural escalation for Lucky*Star...
I thought Konata was suppose to be the "tank".
Interesting... the RPG motif is a theme in one of the short stories in a collection of Lucky*Star as done by other mangaka. This might be fun.... especially if we get to see Nanako in her "clerically healing" drowsiness.
I am still anticipating the Lucky Star OVA. I think that it will prove very entertaining and funny, just like the original episodes. I am an easy audience so I will probably like it anyway, but nontheless I also think that it will be an awesome OVA for an awesome series. I very much doubt that they will degrade it any, because Lucky Star is just awesome as a whole. I just cannot wait to see more comical references, jokes, and also just to see all the lovable cast of the series return.
I have no doubt that this OVA will succeed through me.

LOL. It looks like Kagami is the wizard, but I thought Kuroi-sensei was the wizard (because she doesn't do anything except push the same button over and over again). I would say Miyuki should be the wizard, with the glasses and being all brainy and klutzy (think Presto!). Kagami seems more like an "in-the mix" DD to me. Maybe an assassin/rogue or barbarian/damage-spec warrior (wielding dual leeks!). Tsukasa as a healer/priest makes sense, being the more non-violent one, although a druid-type would also work because she loves puppies so much. :)

It's 30 minutes long. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think that the license would cover the OVA since it didn't exist at the time of licensing.

Just finishing watching the Raw. 40 mins of goodness. How I wish I knew Japanese.
Scene 1 - Everyone visits Minami. We see through the eyes of Cherry the dog. Quite hilarious at parts. But this is the only scene with the 4 1st years. How sad.
Scene 2 - MMORPG. Nanako, Konata, Kagami and Tsukasa playing an MMO. Tsukasa doesn't know the commands whilst Kagami is a pro. The usual bickering, in an MMO setting. :twitch:
Scene 3 - Kagami's left alone at home. Konata suddenly appears in her Yuki garb with a magic wand and suddenly changes her shrine to a vehicle? The whole house gets wheels, Konata and Kagami goes on some trip to some tournament, gets magically changed into several costumes until the Kaga-miku outfit. Both of them goes to some tournament where Nanako is a wrestler, Ayano is a referee and Misao is the king.
And I think there's something important which I missed and then Kagami wakes up. It's all a dream. Tsukasa's in shock.
Scene 4 - Volleyball match. Misao/Tsukasa/Konata/others against Kagami/Miyuki/Ayano/others. Shiraishi's the ref. Exciting match. Tsukasa can't help comparing herself with Kagami. Poor Tsukasa. The end was LOL. :heh:
Scene 5 - Some camp forest walk for Konata and co. Got lost in the forest, and unable to receive phone signals at the same time. Narration of scene at some points from Miyuki. Includes the antics from Konata, the bickering, and how to split 3 cookies for 4 people etc.
Scene 6 - I really don't know how to make sense of this scene. Konata and co visits a pet shop, saws Keroro and Tamama and then errr...I don't know. This one is really just plain weird.
Scene 7 - Anime Tenchou. In the MMO. Spotted Legendary Girl A. Don't know what happened but days and nights went by as both of them stayed at their spot...Konata's AFK! The BGM here kinda sounds like the battle theme from Final Fantasy VII. :heh:
Scene 8 - Live-Action Lucky Channel!!! Got to see it to believe it.
No OP song, no ED song though there's a You Wa Shock in the background by Hiromi Konno and Minoru Shiraishi in the middle of Lucky Channel.
Not the usual Lucky Star stuff though I can accept it. But, as good things does, you always wish for more. 7/10 from me.

No I'm pretty certain Rembr is correct, it was just censored in the form of Kagami's sleep mumbling. Most Japanese people seem to think it's definitely parodying Sousei no Aquarion.

im glad you guys brought up "what DID kagamin mumble"... coz im STILL tryna figure it out.
it was just censored in the form of Kagami's sleep mumblingyup, so basically all we heard was こ*********したい
my first interpretation of it (after replaying it a few times) was, same as Rembr suggested...
コスプレしたい~~~ coz it certainly matches her dream. but after reading here, im starting to think it might be the Sousei no Aquarion parody you guys mentioned. haven't watched that series btw.
this section of the episode was probably the best one! LOL @:
"really you're looking forward it, you tsundere =ω= " :D:D:D
then the rin cosplay had me cracking!
btw, was that haruhi BGM when it was turning night time at summer camp? (cant be bothered to check a scene from haruhi)
thought it was funny when they came back from golden week and kuroi-sensei had level'd up 5 levels:heh: she was playin 24/7 during golden week:heh:. can anyone figure what the moves were parodies of? my first thought was chrono cross for some reason:confused:
btw, how come its out already? wasn't it suppose to be released on 26th? was it leaked early? (like what happened with FF7 advent children) or did they release this at midnight?
btw...Just finishing watching the Raw. 40 mins of goodness. How I wish I knew Japanese.i always wondered, how can people do this to themselves (nothing personal to you Peanutbutter003)... i'd never ruin the epiosde for myself, especially not with lucky star

Ichigo Mashimaro, another favorite series of mine, is getting a second OVA, and it is nowhere near as popular as Lucky Star.
Unless certain higher-ups simply decide EH NO MORE LUCKY STAR THANKS & GOODBYE, we'll see more material. It'll probably be a while, though.
Peanutbutter003

Oh well, Lucky Channel was pretty much a broken wreck anyway.

Ichigo Masimaro has gotten three OVAs so far ....
"Popular" is a wispy word. OVAs depend more on how much in the way of profit has been accrued and how much more profit they might expect. So a series with the right fans in Japan (with big pocketbooks) may get more attention than a fan outside of Japan might expect. Ichigo Masimaro fans are more numerous than one might think -- they're just not quite so loud.
Lucky Star was "bigger than expected" because of vectors from many directions (KyoAni, Comiket, injection of industry and anime references, crossover Haruhi buzz, voice actress choice, etc) that helped what was basically a pleasant little Japanese form of "Peanuts" (daily lives of a group of diverse students in 4 panel comedy) turn from a moderate success to being almost the mascot team for an industry.
Tsuchirinhon
2008-09-26, 11:57
Ichigo Masimaro has gotten three OVAs so far ....
For some reason, I always want to think that the currently-released OVA's are all part of one package, which is probably because I downloaded them all from one torrent. But yeah, I mostly just meant that there's another one on the way.
And all that is nice, but it doesn't really change the fact that Lucky Star is still more widely popular than Ichigo Mashimaro, which is all I said in the first place. It doesn't really matter which started with more potential.

More KyoAni brilliance. Some absolutely wonderful character design and animation. The people in the dog sequences were wonderfully well animated. The game was good. Kagamiku was one for the ages.
Maybe I wasn't as thrilled as I was by the series, but I did have a silly smile on my face much of the time, and that can't be bad.
Voice-acting by Katou Emiri (Kagami) and Hirano Aya (Konata) was just outstanding. And it was good to hear Sasaki Nozomi again (early burbling voice). Give that woman more work!
I noticed that there were several people credited as the episode director (usually there is only one), so I suspect they had different people manage different parts of the show. That would explain the somewhat inconsistent feeling of the various sequences.
And I noticed that one of the first genga (key animators) mentioned was Gotou Keiji, the director of Kiddy Grade, Uta-Kata, and Gigantic Formula. He also did similar work on some episodes of Kure-nai.
I don't know whether this has been mentioned earlier, but there was a huge warning screen that said all the things one shouldn't do with the show, like reproducing or redistributing, and "translating" was included in the list. But I don't think that will stop people.
As for this show coming out a day early, maybe it's the same as CDs, where the CD is apparently in the bigger stores the day before its official release date.

Sounds like from what I'm hearing people should get what is to be expected from the Lucky Star OVA. If they liked the TV Series then they should like the OVA, but if it wasn't their thing then the OVA will probably do little to change their mind about the franchise. Of course. We all do. But it's only been out for a few days. You can't expect fansubs to pop up instantly, you know. A 40-minute OVA propably requires like, a minimum of 20 hours of work if you want it to be done properly, and it's not like they can do all that in one go.

AHHH~ KAGAMIKU!!!!!! :love::love::love:
Now that I've got my inane fanboy mode out of the way, the LS OVA is finally upon us, and it lives up to its name of even more slice-of-life of our favourite girls.
Some highlights for a long LS episode.
Cherry sketch:
A day in the life of Cherry, Minami's doggy. LOL at poor Hiyori getting smacked at by him. (Cherry's a "he" right?)
MMORPG sketch:
Finally, the MMORPG that Konata and Nanako-sensei plays is revealed, in full 3D. It's even got quite advance character customization in that the avatars resemble their real-life counterparts. :heh:
Poor Tsukasa being mute for such a long time because she didn't realize she could simply hit enter when typing her lines in these sort of games.
Tsunderella Kagamin sketch:
Kagamin gets bored and dreams of herself as a reluctant Cinderella, featuring Konata in her Nagato-robes as her fairy godmother.
Konata's first Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo was turning Kagamin into a goth-loli maid.
And then Kagamin gets momentarily turned into Tohsaka Rin. *faints*
And finally, her final form: KAGAMIKU!!!:love: (OK, OK, that's it for me. )
A wordplay on the word for "ball". Instead of taking Kagamiku to a ball (butoukai 舞踏会), she takes her to a martial arts tournament (budoukai 武道会).
Once past midnight, Konata loses her fairy godmother powers, and they end up with her house outside in the middle of the street. (Long story) In order to dispel the spell, Kagamin is required to say something embarrassing.
Kagamin wakes up, realizing it was a dream, though unfortunately she blurted the out the censored word, in front of Tsukasa, much to her great embarrassment. :D (Having read what others have said what it really is, it's all the more funnier)
Volleyball sketch:
It's not often you see Tsukasa fired-up for things. She was totally adorable when she cried after getting her face smacked by the ball accidentally from none other than her sister.
Lost in mountains during field trip sketch:
Amazed Tsukasa managed to fall for the same horror prank twice by Konata.
Konata finally acknowledges what the LS fans have been saying about Miyuki's knowledge: "As expected from Mi-Wiki!"
Horror sketch:
Good use of fish-eyed cam for the "horror" effect, though the mood was quickly dispelled by the sudden Code Geass reference for both Zero (I am Zero and I have returned) and Rollo (I'll use you dry like a rag), as well as a joke on Miyuki's seiyuu Endo Aya concerning Macross Frontier. (Endo Aya is of course Sheryl, the "Galactic Fairy". )
Of course, it wouldn't be a horror sketch without horror, and so Keroro and Tamama obligingly appear in a cameo and curses the girls, turning them into minature Nendoroids with frog suits.
Anime Tencho cameo in the MMORPG:
I think Tencho's a merchant and was hoping "Legendary Girl A" would pay custom to his shop even in the online world as well. Though it seems Konata has a habit of putting her character in "AFK" mode for a very long time.
Live Action Lucky Channel:
WTF at Shiraishi with his afro hair and yaranaika (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yaranaika) tie. LOL
Shiraishi getting sprayed by a hose for nearly a minute.
The appointment of different directors was notable in the various directing styles of the sketches.
Most characters returned for this special, though notably absent were Konata's dad and Yutaka's sister, Yui.
In conclusion, I wouldn't say this OVA is the best LS episode EVAR, but it lives up to its usual reputation of giving a smile to the audience face while enjoying each sketch on its own.

thought it was funny when they came back from golden week and kuroi-sensei had level'd up 5 levels:heh: she was playin 24/7 during golden week:heh:. can anyone figure what the moves were parodies of? my first thought was chrono cross for some reason:confused:
LOL, I never noticed that before. Poor Nanako, still single despite her looks. You can always marry me, you know? :D

I saw the English subs, compared with the Chinese subs I saw earlier, I say these subs got it pretty much there, though I appreciate my subs do not include self-pandering and props thrown to people who I and many other people do not know of.
Maybe it's just me, but the audio during the Lucky Channel part was off.
I planned to compare every sub released out there and decide which's the best to keep based on one line, that line that Kagami sprouted out while waking up. :heh: Let's see who can do the best. :heh:
I'll give a B for this particular English sub. ;)

It's not just you, it was off for me too. x.x
Overall I loved the OVA, though that last sketch was pretty strange. o.o I really hope they make another one though. ^_^
There were two overkills yesterday. Kagami and Konata featured two matches in 2th round of Japan Saimoe together. Partially because of this OVA, they kicked opponents' asses easily and headed to yuri world (the later part is my fantasy).

Please post your result when you done. I'd like to know if there is better sub over there than the one I currently own.
Thanks in advance.

This OVA was pretty much what I'd expect from Lucky Star, which is always a good thing. I can't wait to watch the subbed version. :3
That was great fun, especially the MMORPG part. I quite like how they went with the 4-koma plan as in splitting each chapter into parts (like AzuDaioh). It worked nicely with this 40 minute+ OVA.
Really glad they went with the Macross Frontier seiyuu reference for Miyuki. It just had to happen. Oh and that was so Alto.
It's just great to see this cast again, and i really do hope it won't be the last time. With how popular the show is, i can't see it being.
Oh, and great Jet Stream Attack reference.
Shoutz to AnimeSuki!
I'm glad that you people liked my subs, although they might not be *perfect*.
Well, first of all, the bulk of my Japanese knowledge is due to half a year of self-studying. So maybe my translations were off sometimes; I don't know.
Well, I subbed the OVA yesterday mainly because my friend was dying for a subbed one. It was time-consuming... I don't have a team of fansubbers and all that. It was all done by me, so that was kind of stressful too. Oh and I didn't use the Chinese subs to help; I can't use Simplified Chinese anyways (I can make do with Traditional, although I'm still not so good). Dictionary, dictionary, dictionary... =.=
By the way, that one line when Kagami woke up - there really isn't a very easy way to translate this into English, although I know what it means. This kind of conflict happens particularly with East Asian languages. Anyone who's better at English, offer a suggestion?
Next time I'll have improved at Japanese! :D

I loved it, didn't like Lucky Channel, and didn't get that Zero thing :-D

My review of each section... sorry if this is boring to others.
1st Story: Cherry-chan
The first time I watched it, I thought it was kind of stupid and boring. But I watched it again and found it a lot cuter. I laughed when Hiyori got attacked, though. I totally didn't get Patricia's "stupid dog, tuna dog" rant, though. (I don't remeber Patricia's voice being that loud in the anime, too...) I did really enjoy Yutaka's "Santa Clause is Coming to Town" to "Cherry-chan wa kawaii na" very much ~ !
2nd Story: Online Game
Tsukasa in this section is really funny! It reminds me of all the times that I would start to play a new game and wouldn't know what to do. My favorite part is when she starts to eat by accident. I did like when they did their "victory" pose and it was the Haruhi dance pose, too... knew they would slip that in somewhere...
3rd Story: Konata the Mage
First off, I'd really like to see what kind of dance the Hiiragi-ke is going to... but we never will know, I guess. I think Kona-chan is quite creative with her carriages. Lots of otaku fun in this one... Yuki... Rin... Miku... a maid... shrine maiden... and most likely several others I didn't recognize. I would have liked to see Kagamin as Misao's bride. This seems like a lot of geek-oriented fun shoved into too little time, but Konata is so honesty strange in this that it might be my favorite.
4th Story: Playing Volleyball
This one is nice! The animation is better than the rest, also. Misao's spirit is very inspiring, and Kagami-chan is always looking out for her sister. And even though she lost, Tsukasa gained some experience in independance.
5th Story: Hike
I didn't really enjoy this one. But it was nice seeing a story just for the four main charachters. I do really like seeing those few times when Tsukasa actually comes in handy, like when she knows the stars to show them the right direction. But then she keeps getting scared by a mean Konata... I feel really bad for her 'cause my friends do that to me all the time and I hate it!! Like in "Probably Around Episode Sixteen" ;)
6th Story: Pet Shop
What. the. fuck.
7th Story: Death of Sales Clerk
RIP #1 fan of Densetsu no Shojo A.
8th Story: Live-Action Lucky Channel
If the subbers had actually subbed this part, or at least had the audio fit with the video in some vuage degree, I would comment on it.
I liked everything except for the subbers. AFK, why didn't you sub this one?

The highlight of this OVA is obviously Kagami waking from her dream, sputtering lines that slip from her hidden and personal vault.
Aside from that, I really enjoyed watching the first year students flutter about, especially Yutaka.

-_- I found the Tuna dog part... offensive. Tunas are never to be regarded negatively. XD
I just read the Random Curiosity review and screen caps..... wow, that's a lot of OVA.
Love the sketch format rather than some long silly story.
Though I'm not thrilled with Lucky*Channel - I'm interested in seeing the VAs live-action because that is almost always quite entertaining.
found a .hack reference. When they were talking about games that look like online game but are actually single player games xD. Fits description of .hack perfectly
edit: BTW what is that song on the background on 22:42?

This was quite enjoyable. It was a bit lengthy of an OVA which was cool and I loved all the anime refrences. Each little sketch was enjoyable, in particular the dream and videogame ones.

I thought that was what it was! I recognized it from the episode where Yui, Yutaka and Konata's dad were setting up for Konata's birthday.
I liked the OVA, but the pet scene scared me a little. :upset:

Did anyone else catch Patty's "I'm in despair!" reference in the first segment?
I found it amusing that almost everyone (save Konata) was animated left-handed for the volleyball match. I have this sneaky suspicion that it was originally Tsukasa on the left and Kagami on the right, but the scorecard was drawn the wrong way so they just mirrored the scene.
Also, what are the other two background songs in the Volleyball segment? (20:29 and 23:19)

The fearsome foursome are left-handed, with Konata being ambidextrous as well, so there's nothing wrong, I think. Kyoani doesn't get their details wrong.
The scorecard was placed at Shiraishi's side, so it shouldn't be wrong.
As for the BGM, I imagine it's some BGM from the original anime.

The transition from scene to scene was even more discombobulated than usual. Usually we have an event and then some home scenes, or some home and school scenes, here we have a dog sequence, an MMO sequence, a dream sequence, a sports sequence, sort of a survival sequence and than something really bizzarre...
I thought they tried some stuff that was a little new for Lucky Star in this OVA. They didn't have the usual "talking heads" making light of everyday stuff. But I still enjoyed it. Truth be told, I'd probably enjoy about 35 minutes of almost anything as long as I get to see the familiar cast. I thought they could have done better though. I wish there were more lead up to their scenes, it felt like they took a bunch of ideas they had that didn't fit well in the first season and mashed them all together.
While they were doing the MMO scene, I wished they had a more lengthy scene with a bit more plot. Like a scene with a quest and a boss, there's so many MMO jokes you could play on, imagine if Tsukasa had one of her moments during a boss fight that somehow got Nanako killed too. And that would leave Konata and Kagami to take on the boss on their own. They could showcase their teamwork in a tension filled battle, with plenty of the remarks you get with their unique chemistry.
For the dream sequence, it would have been nice if they had the girls saying they had to get off soon to get ready to go out. The field trip and the volleyball match could have used a little briefing in Nanako's familiar 2-B classroom. Before the volleyball match you could have a good spot for fanservice while the girls were changing. For the field trip it'd be a nice place to showcase some familiar whacky driving. I guess there's length issues, you could cut the bizzare pet shop scene out then ;p.
Good stuff nevertheless. Ever since I even heard about Konata talking about MMO's, I've wanted to see inside one of those worlds. It's cool that the OVA delivered that. And also it gave a good dose of Kagamin, my favorite Tsundere. Overall it could have been more fun-filled but I'm happy for any Lucky Star material I can get.

I thought this was brilliant. Good job KyoAni in doing this. I'm a weebit curious, do you that was all made up or did some of that come from the 4koma? ^^; It was just fun because it returns you too the Lucky Star spirit and was just enjoyable all around.
If I had two grievences, it would be these: That 6th Scene was just plain weird...didn't follow up really or make any sense. And I was a bit irritated that the 1st scene was the only one with any of the first year students. Now I hate Minami most of the time, but you just can't help loving her for this one with how she shows so much concern for Cherry. It's just amazing. Plus you mix in some humor from Patricia and Hiyori and an incredibly cute scene with Yutaka, so it just makes you wonder why they didn't appear a bit more.
When Yutaka was singing, I think she was singing to the tune of "Santa Claus is Coming To Town." Just wondering if anyone else noticed that.
