Getting into manga...

While I've been into anime for some time, I've only read through a few manga, and I've found that I mostly enjoy slice-of-life comedies (whereas I usually tend to find them less amusing in anime form).

Being that I want to promote the R1 anime/manga industry in some manner, I prefer to actually buy manga volumes, (since it's cheaper than anime DVDs).

I'm hoping for comedy or slice-of-life manga licensed in R1, and I'm currently reading Hayate the Combat Butler, Yotsubato/Yotsuba&, and Azumanga Daioh.

But since you list Hayate, I'll consider "slice of life" to be a fairly loose category in this case and also suggest Ranma 1/2 (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=1049) and... I guess Karin (http://www.mangaupdates.com/series.html?id=149) is pretty diverting.

Ah, Genshiken in particular seems interesting, and I was a bit sceptical on Karin when I first heard of it, but I'll give it a maybe. :)

And yeah, Hayate isn't really slice-of-life, but it's mildly similar.
This isn't really constrained to slice-of-life, any mainly comedy manga would work.

Mangaupdates is a great site, similiar in design to Animesuki in regards to archiving manga without actually letting you download said manga from the website.

I'll second Karin, although not sure if I'd classify it "slice of life" exactly.

Maybe it's slice of life in the same way that Fruits Basket is (which I also highly recommend). Strange things happen, but the story is very definitely about real life problems. The thing about Karin is that if you imagine it's the story of a typical high school girl from a foreign family, then it's really good. She's different from everybody. Her family doesn't approve of her following the customs of the local population, so she's different from her family as well. Love interests are impossible because her family objects. Etc, etc, etc. I think it's well written (and well drawn too).

The vampire stuff is just extra ;)

Edit: Oh yeah... School Rumble is hilarious. One of the funniest books I've read. Definitely recommend it.

I dislike manga in general. I much prefer the voices, music, colour and motion of anime. However a few years ago, a few series prompted me to finally pay attention to manga; xxxHolic, and Genshiken. I bought them, and enjoyed them a lot, which opened me up to the world of manga.

Though I still tend to ignore most of it, preferring anime by a huge margin, but there are some series I've enjoyed a lot, that are unlikely to be animated any time soon, if ever. Always looking for more kemonomimi series though, few and far between with main characters (not just cosplay or some minor character.) but I digress.

xxxHolic is kindasorta slice-of-lifey. But I strongly second Genshiken. One of the best 'realistic' stories, animated or otherwise, in a long time. And fully available in R1 print.

Well, it definitely costs a lot more to produce anime than to do manga. Maybe, drama CDs can help solve the "lack of voices" issue.
