I don't suppose this thread could double as a place for fans to vote for Umineko getting it's own section? As it is, the series already has six threads dedicated to it floating around, and more will only surface as time passes.
Considering the fact that Umineko is the successor to Higurashi, I'd honestly be pretty surprised if it doesn't get its own sub-forum.

Yerrrshh! :D
I have been waiting for this! Never played this game but if its anything like Higurashi i will love it! :D:D:D:D
Can't Wait!
Sequel hype, heh.
But with the same guy behind the plot (right?), it's hard not to have great expectations. Higurashi was really something, after all.

X3 Squeee~
I can't wait to hear their voices! *w*
And Maria's uuu~. :3
That's really fast, they don't have that much material up till now. Two games, three with the one released in august. Perhaps they'll stay close to the game this time *dreaming*
Actually I wanted to play the games first, then the anime, but since it will air this soon~ xD

We just need some cute little anti-social butlers with hats.
I also want that.
For the main cast. I can imagine they may consider using alot of the Higurashi seiyu. But i hope they don't. Not that I mind the seiyu of Higurashi. I just want to hear some new voices.

Personally, I've only read the three chapters of manga that have been translated, but I can't wait for it~
Did anyone notice that the plot of the Agatha Christie novel And Then There Were None (alt. Ten Little Indians) is similar to Umineko's? (ATTWN is about ten strangers being invited to a private island, and one by one they start dying o.o)

I did indeed; however, as that Agatha Christie novel is not the only place I've heard of/seen this sort of plot before, I didn't consider it that big of a deal.
...In fact, the Haruhi Suzumiya books/anime do a pretty good job of explaining why those sort of mystery stories take place in such places (that is, things like islands lacking direct contact with the mainland, etc.) in a specific chapter (aptly titled "Lone Island Syndrome").

So any word on how much of the games the anime is adapting? Is it just episode 1, or including 2 and 3 as well?

How could it possibly work? You can't adapt something that doesn't exist yet.

So I was wondering if they could maybe start the anime after it's out, but that may be too late. Who knows.

No chance. They have to know the content they're including in the anime when planning it out at the beginning of the process. They said they'd start this summer, and episode 3 will be out next month, so it's possible that 3 could be in the anime, but I'm not going to assume it will be. 4 is a definite no-no.
Can't say I mind either way, we'll inevitably get multiple seasons for as long as it takes to cover all the chapters anyway, so as long as they do a good job I'll be happy.

Doesn't that rather assume that the basic plots to each arc aren't written up long in advance of them being released? I mean I don't know how Umineko's production processes work but I figure a first draft of the script would be one of the first things that gets done, and if the producers of the anime can get the co-operation of 07th Expansion then there's no reason they shouldn't be able to get an idea of what happens.
Of course, depending on when they're aiming to get the anime released it might create issues, as I doubt they'd want an animated version of the 4th arc out before the actual release of the game.

Thats certainly. So how does it work out? if we estimate, should the game come out before the 4th arc? well that is.. wait.. does anyone know if its supposed to be a 13-14 episode season? or a 24-26 episode season? if so.. what are the chances that the game will come out before?.. if it does, even if the game isnt out yet, as long as they follow the story closely, there shouldnt be any reason they cant animate it.. then again, the game release shouldnt coincide with the 4th arc being animated.. there would be some time in between.. hmm looks like the chances are low.

There isn't any confirmation for any specific amount of "arcs" for Umineko. In fact, it is even possible that we will have either extra content, or different things to build up few elements while the game is in progress. That is said there is high chance that we will have a faithful adaptation. That would be like the first 4 arcs in higurashi for the first season.
Personally, i would assume they will only start the premise with a 12-13 episodes season.
Mh without knowing the mangas and games, are they relations to the first 2 seasons? :)
Considering what the games offer up to the second episode, there isn't any connections, except some cameo and references. Being in the same universe or not, they are completely unrelated (pretty much like Tsukihime and Fate/Stay Night).
But I thought the website said "2009"
The 2009 mention is absolutely not related to the anime release date. There isn't any confirmation for the moment.

That's quite a choice, though I wonder how he will change his voice to match battler (I will have HARD time if he uses his Air Yukito/SNH Kai/KNS Kazuma voice)

What about his Itsuki voice? (From MoHS.) *hasn't played the game at all, so doesn't really know what Battler's personality is like; this was just to mention another role he's done, in a popular series*
Klashikari
2008-07-31, 11:32
It would be really difficult: Itsuki is... well kinda too much a gigolo and a smooth speaker (and some vibes of intellectual guy). It is very very far from Battler's personality so.
Battler is kinda like Keiichi, grown up: passionate, a bit pervert and very familiar. Despite having 18 years, he is enjoying playing with the cousins and such, so it is the reason why I have trouble to picture Ono for Battler.
Sterling01
2008-07-31, 11:52
I hope Ono has a good set of lungs as he's gonna need em.

She played Mutsuki in Manabi, Kana in Minami-ke, and Chiri in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, so I'm really not worried about this, I think she'll do a perfect job.
Ono Daisuke as Battler? :twitch:
Now it makes me really wonder. can Ono soft voice match Battler hyperactive + ecchi voice :heh:

The guy who did K1 wouldn't be a bad choice in my opinion, but this guy is good too, he kind of matches with pimp-like characters. Maybe even Yamaguchi Kappei or the guy who played Light in Death note would fit here.
Inoue Marina;
I like her but I don't know if her voice matches Jessica. Besides, I only remember her roles as Cossette in 'Le Portrait de Petit Cossette' and Monaka in 'Kite Liberator'
She's way too meek in these roles and Jessica is kind of wild.
Nakahara Mai would be nice for Shannon, though.
Maybe Chafurin as Hideyoshi?
And they have to find a place for Yukino Satsuki in there, she's my favourite seyuu:heh::heh:
Inoue Marina had a nice voice when she did Minami Kana in Minami-ke that I think can be doubled up nicely as Jessica...
I'm hoping Yukino Satsuki as Beatrice...they really need someone who can do a nice voice and a harsh laughing voice for Beatrice for Ep2...and I think she's perfect for that.

Klashikari

*moving all game posts about VA to TV thread*
you read my mind sterling, though I think Wakamoto would have to change his voice a bit to sound like a grumpy geezer, instead of a smooth and solemn emperor :p
Nakahara Mai would not exactly work with Shannon: her voice would feel a bit wrong, as it would be moe blob on her (which isn't exactly the type of character shannon is, though she is of course kind and clumsy, but certainly not moe moe or harsh).
but somehow, even if Yukino can do a very nice laugh, I think she would lack of something for the "normal" speech.
I just hope that Koorogi Satomi won't do Maria, it will go VERY WRONG with the "Uu Uu".

There's not much to it but to just admire the nice pictures that the author borrowed from Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu to recreate various scenes in Umineko no Naku Koro ni Episode 2.
And the opening text just states that it contains spoilers from the game, and have bloody scenes.

Well, basically any studio that can animate better than DEEN can would be good. Maybe DEEN could jump in and point out a few things that they did right. Like the eyes. I really liked what they did with the eyes in Higurashi.
I don't know, maybe Bones would be cool? I'd love to see how they would tackle a show like that. Might be too action-y though.

I can already imagine Shannon with Enma Ai's voice hehe
When I suggested Nakahara Mai for her, I was kind of thinking on her clannad-nagisa

And, please, Kinzo NEEDS to be dub by Charles Vi Brittania. ALL HAIL BEATRICE!
What I want to know is, since they definitely aren't going to be able to fit every scene of the novels into the anime, how will they know what to animate?
Unless they talk to 07th and learn the whole story, since no one knows the answer to the mystery yet, how can they determine what scenes are important and which aren't?

Though it might be better then Higurashi was since they're starting the anime with only 2 (soon 3) episodes out, not 7.

Repeat after me: Higurashi and Umineko are NOT bishoujo visual novel at ALL.
Might be the "same" for you, I dunno, but adapting a VN without any bishoujo component might change the whole deal for such kind of studio.

That is a mistake: whilst it is normal they got screwed for season 1, with 6 (not 7) arcs to do, the second season had only 3, and yet, there are skipped facts that aren't exactly great (especially start/end of minagoroshi).

I'm aware of that (I was referencing the game's arcs; if you hadn't replied, I would have gone and edited my post to say "four question arcs and four answer arcs in the game[or "games", if you count each game separately, though I believe each successive game did have the previous arcs in addition to the new one]); what was odd to me was Klashikari saying "6 (not 7)", as though implying the existence of an additional arc. I am also aware that one of the arcs (the Satoko-oriented one) in season two was an anime-only arc, so Klashikari's mentioning of three arcs in season two was not confusing to me. I dunno where episode 1 of season 2, "Reunion", fits in, though. Was that anime-only as well?
Klashikari
2008-08-06, 15:59
Reunion should be considered as part of Tsumihoroboshi-hen.
As for the 6 (not 7), it was to put emphasis that one season only was the first 6 chapters of Higurashi, while the later 2 (plus the extra one, yakusamashi-hen) were used for kai.
In overal, there are only 8 arcs + 1 extra. Reunion isn't exactly a arc so.

Ah, okay. Anyway...is there any evidence on whether or not Umineko may be broadcast in HD? (Or, for that matter, Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei?)
Rei is also coming out in BD, so that's HD
Umineko...if AT-X airs it, which they probably will, then it would be in HD

i'm kind of hoping (although it's not terribly likely) that this will be split into 4 seasons of 13 eps, so that it doesn't clash with the game releases and should have more balanced pacing
That is a mistake: whilst it is normal they got screwed for season 1, with 6 (not 7) arcs to do, the second season had only 3, and yet, there are skipped facts that aren't exactly great (especially start/end of minagoroshi).
I know the actual first season of the anime only had 6 arcs in it, but I was just saying how they started the anime when there were 7 arcs of the game out.

No, I believe the 7th came out while they were making the first season.

The first season of Higurashi was broadcasted in april 2006, while Minagoroshi barely got released in end december 2005. So it is a bit "short" to work on 7 arcs in barely 4 months.
The production of the first season most likely begun before Minagoroshi was released.
I always thought than they did the 6th first chapter in the first season because they needed a ''good'' endding for the end
Klashikari
2008-08-07, 08:47
Indeed. The way how they ended the first season pretty much implied that the series wasn't expected to have a sequel. It was way too open (despite it should have ended like a cliffhanger).
Perhaps they needed a proper popularity for an appropriate budget, consering how Kai became compared to the first season.

BTW, they did announce seiyuus for Battler and Jessica already on 7/31 (http://umineko.tv/web/main/news/index.html#080731), so you guys can stop speculating for those two characters.
Battler: Ono Daisuke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Daisuke_Ono)
Jessica: Inoue Marina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inoue_Marina)
I enjoyed both of them in Minami-ke, still I'm having a hard time seeing Ono as Battler. I blame his excellent performance as Itsuki Koizumi in Haruhi. ^^;

I think Ono Daisuke is an alright choice. Though I admit Im hoping he uses a appropiate voice (don't know if Akasaka's voice would work in Battler's...I don't think so)
Inoue Marina works. Though I think I was expecting someone like......Saeko Chiba? Nevermind that could have gone wrong easilly.

Since they've only announced that they're making anime, but not when, so I don't think it's going to start before the end of 2008.
By that time fourth arc will be out, which will be the last Question arcs (according to Ryu-chan's diary), so if the anime goes up to 4th arc it could have well-shaped, if not happy, ending.
Well, that's if they're planning to do another series for Answer arcs, it is.
If they try to fit everything in one season of 13eps or something... we'll all go Umineko no naku koroni, ikinokoreta mono ha nashi.

Perhaps a little too deep for Battler? It might work though. Still, it'll be all over if he has to unbutton his shirt. I'm afraid I won't be able to control my laughter then.

It is unfortunate that I don't "know" Battler. Epic laughter would be a major selling point if he needs to go stark raving mad.

Everyone who knew Japanese said the article stated 2008 was the release date and no one else said this was wrong. No idea where it went, though. I've seen one of MGLN blogs blatantly posted "Movie will be in '08 and Bardiche will be female" as if these are the fact, when those are only rootless rumors spawned from this Animesuki boards.

Actually, I may have been guilty of causing confusion. They really can't say when the release date is because they just started production on it, which is what is written on the flyer "production starting summer 2008."
As for why I posted that link to the flyer, it's practically because I really didn't pay attention to what the person was asking; I basically posted it as "here's the flyer, if you can read Japanese, read it yourself" without taking into consideration what the actual question was.

I had some issue with Jessica at first, but considering she "is" 18 years old, it is actually fine, though she sound a bit too "lady-like" despite the familiar speech style.
I assume the issue is the original game design, because I have less troubles to link these voices with their manga design :heh:

Not much. Battler's boob obsession, random talking about the family, then they go over the legend of the golden village (Battler's voice here was good) and finally say they'll be doing some other form of media before the anime actually airs. Sounds like a full cast drama CD might be in the works so we can hear everyone else's voices.

Considering the content of the OP disc, there will obviously some themes of the original game, notably 黒のリリアナ (remixed in 黒のリリアナ ~メランコリア~(instrumental)) and 金色の微笑 (remixed into 金色の嘲笑 ~麗しの晩餐~)
I just hope they will do something about hope, オルガン小曲 第6億番 ハ短調, システム零, Golden_Slaughterer and Worldenddominator (too early to talk about ep3 BGM, so ひだまり, あかいくつ偽 or Miragecoordinator).
Hope, オルガン小曲 第6億番 ハ短調 and Golden_slaughterer are the most important, first being the "you" of umineko, second being Beato's theme, third for being the shocking and trusty value.

So, is that just a fan-made video? The art kind of seems that way, but maybe it's just very early production... It'll be really hard to fit 4th game in considering that the production have started for a while now, that being said it would be a lot better to see the question arcs together.
The less arcs they have the cover, the less they can rush. Meaning the less material that will be skipped.

Well it's not like Nakahara Mai suffers from the monotone voice actor problem to the extent other VA's do (like a certain one whose name starts with T and ends with anaka Rie).
While earlier I would have thought this to be accurate (though not bad). After seeing her role in Akane Iro and the game (soon to be animated) Tears to Tiara, I found this not to be the case.
But on those seiyu. Good choices. I can definitely imagine Shannon with that voice.
I keep imagining Kanon being voiced by Sanada Asami (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=3680).

Well it's not like Nakahara Mai suffers from the monotone voice actor problem to the extent other VA's do (like a certain one whose name starts with T and ends with anaka Rie).
Huh? Do you actually mean Kugimiya Rie? (I assume Avisch thought the same too).
Tanaka sure is popular for her deliciously evil voice "suigintou", but she did so many different roles that she certainly has a huge range of tones etc (Lacus from Gundam Seed, and Maria from Hayate no Gotoku notably). She would be an excellent choice for Beato.
On the other hand, if you were talking about Kugimiya, yes she is downright generic (in her own account): she has a proper voice for her roles, but that's that: she cannot do anything past that catered "loli tsundere" (albeit different in Akane iro but for the first episode only) and is basically recycling the same damn voice over and over.

I blame the meltdown of Iceland's economy for my slip up. As you said, I was talking about Kugimiya Rie, whose last distinctive role I heard was Alphonse Elric in FMA, who knows how many years ago. She may be a good VA, but the fact that she has inmersed herself into a character mold has meant the death of her possibilities right there. Even if she is physicially able to do many type of roles, it has come to a point that the industry won't let her experiment much.

I'm guessing you haven't heard Kugi's shouta ninja voice yet.Kalsh she voiced Alphonse Elric, and that girl in Mnemosyne, Mimi
I also knew and heard about such roles as well. The main problem is that she is literally flooding her performances with her usual and generic one dimensional "loli tsun" voice.
As any seiyuu, she probably has more potential elsewhere (as seen in first ep in Akane Iro, as Yuuhi), but the vast problem is that even with her characters that don't have much in commons, they are basically the same and don't have subtle differences (except maybe shana in some extent). Pretty much agreeing for the silly mold effect (and she isn't only one for that: Noto Mamiko is approaching dangerously to that syndrome...)
Take for example Nakahara and Tamura: both have a specific "moe" voice, but they add a lot of subtle differences (despite very similar, Rena (Hack//Legend of the twilight bracelet) and Rena (higurashi) are very distinct, same between Mei (clannad) and Rika (Higurashi)).

^ But isn't Madhouse doing Chaos;Head? Even though I am waiting for Umineko (and Higurashi Rei but that's coming up soon xD) I gotta say it'll be out for either summer or fall 2009.
And I also have a feeling that Deen will take it as well. I'll be happy if that doesn't happen.
We haven't gotten any info on who animating Umineko right?
But isn't Madhouse doing Chaos;Head?
A studio of Madhouse's caliber is well used to working on few projects simultaneously and I believe Chaos;Head is not their only fall anime. Not to mention that chances are Chaos;Head will be over way before Umineko airs or even before the work on it actually starts.
If Madhouse can do 6 anime series this season, 2 planned next season, and a bunch of OVA/Movies planned...
Then again, there's like no news whatsoever since they released the CD back in August...I wonder if they are waiting for ep4 to come out first...

Honestly, after what they have done with C;H, I would rather welcome DEEN once again than madhouse.
Until they use a budget like DN or Casshern, I would not give credits to madhouse after how C;H turned into...
Yeah. I would like DEEN to do Umineko. Mostly because DEEN was able to capture some nice atmosphere in the first season of Higurashi. The C;H anime has some atmosphere, no near the amount that Higurashi's first season had though.
Then again Madhouse have created tons of anime with brilliant atmosphere - Monster, Gunslinger Girl, Kaiba to name a few off the top fo my head.
Thinking of Monster I think Mami Koyama could be a great Eva...just like she was in Monster. ;) At least based on my impressions from the first episode of the Umineko game.

Beatrice - Tanaka Rie
Shannon - Mai Nakahara
Bernkastel - Tamura Yukari

If madhouse were to do it I want them to use Death Note, Monster and Kurozuka kinda quailty. The Choas; Head isn't one of their budget spenders...I was surprised at the quaitly compared to some of their other shows. I wonder if Shaft animated it that would be pretty neat too. But I don't think the pacing would word for the kind of animation they do.
I want Higurashi's art style, but DEEN just somehow managed to butcher it in execution. But it seems like Umineko will have a Rei like style, which I personally wasn't very fond of.

For truth. In truth, I'd not like any of the Higurashi art styles. The first was creepy, the second ruined the atmosphere and Rei.... :/
Unfortunately, I'm afraid the animation would never live up to my expectations. I can only imagine it as it is from the motion graphics. Haha.

I actually for once...don't like a manga art. The first arc...I simply don't like how they draw the characters. Maria has a huge head...Battler simply looks odd...and following that Kanon and most of the adults. But if the anime's going to be bad...then I'll stick to the manga...motion graphics and the visual novels

They helped out with marketing and such for the Higurashi anime too so I wouldn't be surprised if they're along for the ride this time too. 'Doing the anime' makes it sound like they're an animation studio though, which they aren't.

I think they're probably still scrounging the budget they're going to need to do Episode 3 :heh: I'd be inclined to think they aren't waiting for episode 4 because they clearly said it'd gone into production already. Well an announcement around Comiket, therefore cooinciding with the release of episode 4, seems plausible actually. They've had the website up for a while now, they can't keep us waiting that much longer, surely. It does seem strange that they've still only announced Battler and Jessica though, I figured they'd trickle them out slowly during this long wait but the site pretty much died.

Yup. Like the first trailer...it came...what? One or 2 weeks after the summer Comiket....or at least it appeared in youtube. So I guess they'll release something after this Comiket. (Time flies...but not fast enough xDDDD) I kinda understand why they released Battler first, since he is veeery important, but they would've put at least the rest of the cousins if they had the voices. That was a surprise to me, Horie Yui...
Horie Yui's serious Hanyuu sounds a little too adult to work with serious Maria, IMO (childish Hanyuu maybe works with Childish Maria, or not).
Even though Rika/Hanyuu and Maria seem to be of the same age, we know Hanyuu is a god, so the adult tone doesn't look weird on her (the same goes for Tamura Yukari with Rika).
She'll have to work out something new for Maria, or else, it'll get kinda of weird...
For Maria the most important thing would be to find someone with a quality creepy laugh. I am not sure how much Horie Yui fits that requirement but I am not very fond of her and I don't like Maria either, so it coudl work. ;)

I like both (heck, Tamura's serious voice is very sexy), but even her serious voice would be terribly off for beatrice, and considering bernkastel, it would be a farce (seyuu bending? :heh:).
Well, ideally, yes, Tanaka Rie would be a great choice, but ironically, another character fits the bill as well (see episode 3) :heh:
Itou would make a greater Beato than 34, imo.
Fuyuka Oura, who did Miyoko, would make a better 34.
I think someone said this before, though...
The Ito that was Takano's VA
Ah, silly me. I always keep forgetting the Itou part of her name, even though I love her voice.
Well, ideally, yes, Tanaka Rie would be a great choice, but ironically, another character fits the bill as well
As long as it's an evil character or at least one with an occasional evil streak I am more than fine with any role she might be given. Although come to think of it, in the end, all the Umineko characters might fit that latter requrement.
Anyway, I can't really think of other female seiyuu with impressive "evil voice". Maybe Inoue Kikuko who was pretty damn good in that respect in Macross Frontier. And now I see she even voiced a Higurashi character, so who knows...

True that, at the very least it will lead to theories that Beatrice and Bernkastel are the same person (which for all we know they might turn out to be). I totally forgot about Bernkastel in my urge to support more the possibility of so much of Tamura's serious voice.

Well, lets hope she starts practicing then.
Although I was kinda suprised about Horie Yui, and part of me thinks it's a miscast, I think Ryukishi07 might've had a hand in picking the cast.
1. Higurashi Rei, "Uguu" by Hanyuu
2. Hidebu, "Soko wo doite-!" by Hanyuu
so perhaps in Umineko, we'll have "Uu-Uu-Uguu" by Maria.
