View Full Version : Licensed Kodomo no Omocha

I was just wondering: Why has Kodomo no Omocha, which will hence forth be known as Kodocha for the sake of time, stopped being fan subbed? Has it been licensed? If so by whom, and when? I want it sooooooo bad. I can't wait for it hit the states, but until then, I need my fix. Thx! So please, any kind hearted soul and/or fan subber :help: me! Thx again!

It hasn't been licensed, and I don't know if it will be. I think it's pretty old.
I also have no idea why there doesn't seem to be fansubs for episodes 33-37, and after episode 38.
I can't imagine how this series could be 102 episodes long, but I guess it is.

Jordan I suggest you read the forum rules next time.

It's not that old, I think it's about 1996. The real issue with licensing is the large number of cultural references and the problem of getting someone who can talk fast enough to dub Sana. For 102 episodes. And the length.

According to some industry comments in AnimeonDVD forum in the past, the real problem is how much Sony is asking for the series besides other demands.
About the age factor... do people know how old Dragonball was when it was licensed ?
I'm not sure this series has so much stopped as is not progressing at a very fast pace.
Someone has to buy the DVDs, you know, and I'm sure even they can only afford so much so fast...

Thx to all who helped. As for Wandering_Youth... what rule did I break? I didn't ask anybody to start subbing it, and I didn't ask for any favors. I just wanted info. Anywho, if I did break a rule, tell me which one so I don't do it in the future. Thx.
I don't believe the subbing has stopped (33 and 34 were released fairly recently]), it's that the KTP is slow as hell.

I believe episodes after that HAVE been subbed.
KTP is now redoing the subs from DVDs (the previous ones were tapesubs)

Anywho, if I did break a rule, tell me which one so I don't do it in the future. Thx. I don't see anything. You're not really asking when the episode is released, but more if it is in progress or planned as a project or still being tended to at all. Nor are you plainly asking someone to sub it.
If so by whom, and when?
So please, any kind hearted soul and/or fan subber :help: me! These were the offensives, I think. Probably a misunderstanding.

All episodes except 41-50 are subbed (And i think 82) by KTP. Those just have summaries. (and they claim they will do them with the dvd's...if they ever get to them that is). Oh, and i forgot to add, there are rumors that it is going to be licensed, a lot of them.

/me hugz Kodocha DVD tightly >.>
I wonder if this was the actual DVD they used -_-;; (since I got it off eBay around the time they finished the episodes on that DVD)

One thing I didnt like about KTP was that they cut the ending song off certain eps so they could fit 4 eps on a cd.
I would rather be able to get 4 eps on a cd than have the closing song on every episode. They left the ed on every 4th ep, I think, so you still got it. But I frequently skip the ending and opening songs when watching anime, unless it is a series where there is new storyline introduced at that time.
Oh, and i forgot to add, there are rumors that it is going to be licensed, a lot of them./me dances around the neighborhood with the apparent risk of being branded as an insane. That means, no more waiting for KTP to show mercy on the Kodocha fan. I'd rather wait three months for the DVD's to come out than waiting for three months for the KTP to release one episode.

KTP = Kodocha Translation Project (I think)
They have a channel on irc and you should go there if you don't want to use bt. (At least I *think* they distribute in their channel ^^; )

It seems that there are a couple of relatively inferior animes which are being subtitled by more than one fansub group.
Does Sana's rapid-fire dialogue increase the workload on the fansubber a whole lot? That's the only reason I can guess for groups to pass over this hard-to-find (but very well known and loved) series in favor of something forgettable like... say... Raimuiro Senkitan or Harukanaru Toki no Naka de OVA.

Maybe because there hasn't been a new Kodocha episode since December.. and episodes have been skipped.

Seems more like a problem with distribution. You can visit their fansite forums and look around.

Maybe they have a life outside fansubbing? Maybe you can wait a little longer? I'm guessing they aren't jumping ahead to the skipped episodes because they're still at around episode 30 redoing the entire thing from DVDs.

Okay, calm down. I was just responding to your question. There's no need to get angry and defensive.
You don't even need to wait for this; Kodocha was subbed all the way through on VHS, and I have a copy of Episode 100 that was encoded from VHS subs so I'm pretty sure they all have been.
Correct, but the new fansubs are good quality encodes from the Japanese DVDs. That's what we're waiting for.

Sanae? It's Sana. :nono: This is my second favorite anime (out of around 800) so I get picky about it. :D This is a good episode, even though it's only a one-shot. Tsuyoshi-kun and Aya-chan are so cute, it's really nice to see at least one stable relationship in this anime.

Yeah whaddya mean bad? Ultra Relax always makes me get up and shake my booty! :) The long version of this song is good too, and the remixes are really awesome.
TOKIO did the original "7 o'clock news" song. The also did another screamingly fun song called "Minna de Wahaha!". Does anyone know if that song was in Kodomo no Omocha anywheres?

WHAT is this PICKING on Shinorer all about! I won't have any of that, thanks. "Ultra Relax" is awesome - the crazy banjo loops alone are worth gold. And I like the weird Easter Island thing in the sequence.

Aah, why don't they make shows like this anymore?
I bought the entire Tokyopop Kodocha manga series (10 volumes). It's also good and I like it, but nothing (I mean 'nothing') compares to the crazyness that is Kodocha anime!
Even Excel Saga seems tame to compare.
Anyway, for me Ultra Relax is a really good OP video. Those chibi characters just dancing around, it's very unique for an anime OP.

Ultra Relax...that's one funny OP song, and the video that goes along with it is super funny as well. Although I think I like the 7 'o Clock News OP slightly better (there was an Evangelion version of it floating around a long time ago that was particularly funny).

Sorry b-man, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou edges out Kodocha on my list since the manga is an amazing masterpiece, and the anime brings it to life. (Plus my first and only cels I ever bought are 3 absolutely fabu pieces from the first OVA.) :D Kodomo no Omocha beats out all other anime in terms of humor and drama. One of the most memorable moments in my anime watching hobby was when Sana was considering letting herself die in the movie shoot fire. I remember exactly where I was, and whispering "Holy GAWD !!! " before hurrying to find the next ep. :) This is an incredibly compelling anime... except for the simply awful New York arc but I try to forget that happened. :(

I don't think there is anything wrong with more than one group subbing any particular series. From a translator's viewpoint, it's very difficult to translate something you have no interest in. Unless of course, you are paid to do so ;)
The fansubbing process is grueling enough even if one IS interested in a series (or whatever material is being subbed), so I don't think groups should "spread out" their work or something like that. Besides, it's always nice to see a little competition (constructive and healthy that is). Of course, with projects like Kodocha it'd be nice if, instead of forming a new group, people interested could help out KTP and get involved that way. I'm sure KTP already has a wealth of resources concerning Kodocha, and with old series like this it's hard to get multiple groups working consistently on it anyway, so consolidating might be more efficient and also more pleasurable to work with. Just my $0.02 :)
Funimation has licensed Kodomo no Omocha (aka Kodocha, aka Child's Toy).
From www.animeondvd.com
Funimation (Saturday, April 10th, 2004 @ 03:42 PM EST): Funimation will be releasing the Blue Gender movie, The Warrior on July 20. On August 24, the first DVD from Detective Conan (Case Closed ; ;). A YuYuHakushou boxset will be coming out in late July that holds the first six volumes of the Dark Tournament Saga. Then Lance announced Kodocha to much cheering!
Kodocha (Saturday, April 10th, 2004 @ 03:45 PM EST): It will be coming out in Spring/Summer 2005

Owo. This news took me by surprise. I expected Kodomo no Omocha to remain one of those great series that never gets the US release it so richly deserves, but here it (apparently) is! Normaly I'd be a little bummed out, but the fansubs have been coming out slowly (or not at all... still not sure what's up with Kodocha) for awhile now, and I thought I'd never get a chance to see the rest of the series.
I have Animation Runner Kuromi on DVD and thought it was awesome, and it's success no doubt helped this series get licensed. The beautiful twist there is that watching Kodomo no Omocha is what got me to check out Kuromi, proving that fansubs do get people to buy anime, and buying anime does encourage companies to license more great series. Huzzah!
Tough to have it at three episodes per DVD though; for a 100+ ep. series I'd much rather see it come out in boxed set(s).

for all we know they have screwed up again . I have always doubted kodoma would ever be brought to the US and untill I see it on the shelves I still wont believe it .

I agree somewhat.
Personally I think it was stupid of FUNI to announce it now. Why couldn't they have announced it late this year or early next year?
I don't like the idea of someone announcing a license and saying "it'll be released a year from now."
I don't think Funimation was taking fansubbing into consideration when they decided when to announce their license.

Not just talking about fansubbing. If they announced it later this year or early next then people would be much more excited because it was coming soon.
It's hard to get excited for Kodocha on DVD because we have to wait a whole freaking year for it. People are excited that it's licensed, but if was announced later this year or early next people would be be excited that it was licensed AND that it would be coming soon.
I think it matters a lot when something gets announced, and not for fansub reasons. I would like announcements for licensing to be closer to the release dates. Like I said before the idea of an announcement saying "we'll release this a year from now" is dumb, IMO.
Edit For example, Geneon announced Uchuu no Stellvia as licensed today, and the first disc is coming in September. I like that.
Better to announce that they have it now, so people will be able to save up for the release date, than to wait until a month before and have people still be in doubt.
Even at 3-4 eps a disc, the price will still be fairly cheap (as per funimation, this is something NO ONE ever takes into account), and on a 6-week release cycle between discs... I'm certinaly not complaining.
Also, that thing about One Piece, it was an editorial mistake, however this was an official announcement. Sure, the license MAY get yanked at any point, but for now it's signs of clear sailing ahead.
THANK YOU FUNIMATION

They already licensed it and announcd that it will be available one year from now? Yes it's true but I will be watching my bootlegs first since I got all episodes on HK DVDs, until they get to the release of the final episode. :)
If they released 6 episodes on each DVD, it would be 17 DVDs long, and 8 episodes on each DVD would be 13 DVDs. 6 weeks between each would be like 2 whole years for the final episode if it was 6 on each DVD and 1 year and 4 months for the 8 episodes on each DVD.
It's a laugh that people will have to wait at least a year for the first DVD to come out and then almost two years more just to see the end. I think I will go watch the bootlegs now and avoid the long wait, if you know what I mean. I will have better things to do than worry about the ending, or find better anime to watch soon. :heh: :heh: :heh:

The manga recently finished its run in the US, so the ending won't be a surprise to a lot of Sana fans. However, who knows how much they changed in the adaptation? That's where the fun is, I say. Sana is a lot more hyper in the anime... and the white bat... and the songs... lots of good stuff in the anime.

Their price is not cheap online.Funi disc price is $25 discount to $17 and bandai,MB,ADV price is $30 discount to $17.Their price is not cheap.
Their 6-week release already have problem.Kiddy Grade #2 have sound probelm if you didn't know.ADV even release more content at a 6 week rate but funi have to lower the content to release the dvd faster.
Not saying funi is the wrost but I think they can do better. They are the company that release DBZ and suck alot of money out of the fan you know.
FUNimation is making a lot of good decisions lately...
i've decided to call off my kappa attack on FUNi headquarters...due to them:
1) licensing series that don't suck
2) Not editing them to crap and forcing us to buy what's left
i also think it was a smart decision to release the anime after the manga has been released. the Fruits Basket anime was released stateside before the manga...IMO if it had followed the manga, FUNi's sales would have perked up a bit
Damn, between Kodocha and Urusei Yatsura I'm going to need a lot more shelf space. I hope they go with at least 5 episodes per disc, but I'd buy it at 4 too, this is a great series. I remember hearing Sony was asking for a ton of money for it, maybe they finally compromised. It'll be years before I see the last ep of UY, so I think I can wait until '07 or '08 to see the end of Kodocha. Even though it's not starting to come out until '05, I'm glad they announced it now, something more to look forward to.

Then again, they haven't been in the Anime Distribution game as long as ADV or Bandai, and aren't just focusing on Anime either.
Perhaps a "Friend of Big Business" sticker on your car bumper would suffice? ;)
Remember, some people just don't have that kinda cash lying around. Not saying that what they're doing is right, per se, but people have their reasons for doing the things they do. Same as anything else.

Hmm... I'm in split minds about this one... YES I'll finally get to see the series on DVD (not that the Kodocha TP fansubs were too bad, but... :P), but a whole year? I hope there's a boxset waiting for us at the end of that year. Yeah, I'd prefer for them to have annouced in 6 months time or so, the wait will be annoying...
And as for disk/episode counts. Aparently Funi ran a poll on their site, and people said they'd rather pay less price for 3eps/disk than more price for 6 eps/disk
Hopefully they'll wake up for Kodocha, 3eps/disk with a series that long isn't even funny.

wow just because you don't have problem doesn't make it cheap.

NO WAY! Its the end of the world as we know it! Kodocha has been licesned! Their treatment of Fruit Basket was great.
Not yay. It might get the Dragonball Z and GT treatment. You know, Bad voices, crappy music, episode edits by the truckload, etc.
But if it does get the Fruits Basket treatment, it will take about 6 to 10 years to finish dubbing and releasing the whole series on DVD. (That's if they don't have the Japanese version with subtitles.)
EDIT: Corrected spelling errors.
Am I wrong, but wasn't Funimation originally somehow under Saban's thumb for a long time? I think that's where a lot of the issues with the DB treatment came around. When they finally freed themselves, things picked up a bit. I don't follow DB, so I'm not sure, but I think someone mentioned that to me once.
I think that releasing it at a higher disk count is going to be dangerous... Kodocha starts off strong, but around ep. 20-30, the frantic comedy tones down and gets replaced with shoujo angst for a while. Sales for that middle section will probably be pretty soft, and I don't know how damaging that will be to the series' performance as a whole.

Maybe shoujo angst for ep. 20-30 because they did follow the manga at that time. Whenever there are episodes that do not rely on manga content Kodocha is particularly frantic.

No they were not under sabin because if they were DBZ would turn into a live-action series like how they did to power rangers. The issues were same with sailor moon if DIC didn't win sailor moon than sabin will have it and turn it into a live-action series.

I do agree that we should be cautious about what we expect, but Funimation know full well that Kodocha is a fan favorite. No one else tried as hard as they did to get this series because it was too expensive or too difficult to license, but Funimation didn't give up. They will give this the otaku treatment because that is the primary audience for this series. DBZ and GT were their early days (and screwed up by other companies as well), they've proven they can do a good job now.
Who cares if it takes 6-10 years? (And it won't, that's an overestimate.) Before this announcement I thought it would take NEVER, as in not happen AT ALL. 10 years is a lot shorter than never.
To everyone else in this thread: Stop whining!!!!! AHHHHH! This is a joyous moment!
Yes, this series is long. No, everyone can't give us 7 eps per disc (but I wish they would like w/Fruit Basket), so just budget yourself if you really love this show. 3 episodes per disc? Hey this isn't Viz with Inu-Yasha.
EDIT- Now who the heck will they find that can speak as fast as Sana? :)

dude not everyone is whining :)
let me tell you about Fruit Basket.
at that time when Funi release Fruits Basket at 6 ep disc for $40
Bandai release 8/9 ep disc for $45.
There was a riot that Funi is charging so much that they have to lower it down to $30 to sell. They say that at many con that they will never do that again.
not bashing or anything just a little history about fruit basket :)
I too wonder who will voice Sana :)
What release from Bandai had that many episodes on one disc?
Edit: You seem to be thinking of Outlaw Star which was released in three volumes. Actually each volume comes with two discs .
Remember, some people just don't have that kinda cash lying around. Not saying that what they're doing is right, per se, but people have their reasons for doing the things they do. Same as anything else.
Yes, however I don;t like the good feeling of the thread of the announcement for a series that was "unlicensable" to be disrupted with "OH HAY GUYZ I HAVE HK MAN US R PRETTY SLOW I CAN DO WHAT I WANT REGARDLESS TOA NYONE ELSE JUST THOUGHT I'D SAY IM SHITTING ALL OVER THIS THANKS". It bugs me.

Huh?
Even now, Dragonball was around $33 AUS from DVD pacific (10-17 episodes per set), Most of their box sets round down to $9 USd a DVD, while media blasters, adv, and everyone else are still in the area of $13 per disc when it comes to boxsets. Also, all of their other titles have been cheaper MSRP wise than most of Bandai and ADV's stuff.

Given that it's going to be out in one year, I doubt your theory on 6-10 years. Two possibly?
Bandai release 8/9 ep disc for $45.
Thats because Bandai titles were older (I can only really think of outlaw star that got this treatment). It is possible people got the shits with FUNimation, but as it is, everything eventually comes down in price anyway.

Long sentence.
FUNimation had Saban as a TV distributor, thats why 68 episodes were reduced to 53 due to Sabans strict editing policy.

wow I must be an old man
Outlaw Star (TV) (1998)
Silent Mobius(TV) (1998)
Saber Marionette J (TV)(1998)
Geneshaft (TV)? I sure about the other one but not this one
note I might miss some
Fruit Basket(2001)
wow three year different I guess anything older then 1998 should have this kind of disc release.well look on the bright side it not older than DB,DBZ or even DBGT.
However you look at it they are not the same as you stated above. The three titles you listed were special collections that came with 2 disc per volume and came out four years before fruits basket.

they come with 2 disc.So that don't that mean they can't be cheap? (a little thought not ment as a debate but more doesn't more disc cost more than one disc? so shouldn't it cost more if if has more disc? end small thought)
The year is when they were make not when they were release as a dvd.
Why the heck do you think they lower the price to $30 for.Because they are not cheap.
Outlaw Star 2000-2001
Saber Marionette 2001
Brain Powered 2002
Geneshaft 2003
Fruit Basket 2002-2003 I think the price change was in the same year that the fourth volume was release
Edit: :heh: sorry for the kept edit again and again.I find mistake everytime I read it.
edit2:add release info
The difference of price could be attributed to the price difference between dvd-5s and dvd-9s or Funi felt that that was the price pointto recoup their investment.

Sure it may bug you. If there is really a problem with it I expect the mods to take action. No need to insult other people or condescend their level of intelligence. The guy who posted about his bootlegs did not use the kind of language you used at all, and I really don't find your AOL impersonation to be humorous either. I mean, it really does take the thread further away from its original intents and purposes. Besides, if there are positive opinions about the licensing there can also be negative ones. The opinions don't change the fact that the series was licensed, and it will be released according to Funi's will. If you are happy with it (as am I) that's good for you. If someone else is unhappy about it, they are also entitled to their opinion. No need to throw little hissy fits here and there.

Actually, I found it quite funny. It was an over exaturation. Not meant to be *exactly* what he said.
I've watched eps 1-3 and somehow managed to get myself eps 53-102. I don't have eps 4-52. I heard that eps53-102 were featuring their high school life.
Question : How much will I get confused with the story? Does it greatly it affect the enjoyment if I skipped eps 4-52? (basically can't wait til I get those eps since eps 53-102 are in my hand now.)

You'd basically be skipping half the series, which is never a good thing.
There are plenty of plot points that you'd miss that could be of importance to the second half. So just wait until you get the rest of the first half, then watch the entire series marathon style!

You need to learn patience, its a virtue that will never do you wrong.
Heck, I've been to the point to where I had an ENTIRE series on my computer, but couldn't get Episode 2 no matter how much I tried.
I deleted the entire series after that.
Like I said, patience.
If you got them off the net then... just go find the rest... if you have a CD or something... I guess you could watch them if you want but you'll be missing out on a great deal of the series...
I guess other than the fact that you would miss the entire evolution of Sana and Hayama's relationship, as well as the evolution of everyone else's relationships while you are at it, you wouldn't miss a thing. Why don't you check out the manga instead of ruining the anime by watching it out of order?
Thank you very much ^_^
Since you all said the same then I'll check out the first half of the series first. I'm looking forward for manga version.
Could you tell me which manga volume will be equal in story of those in eps 1-52?
I'm going to check out those volumes and continue watching eps 53-102. ^_^
BTW I heard that there's only 10 volumes? 10 volumes = 102 eps... hmmm... ???
Thank you again ^____^

There is a lot of filler in the anime. I haven't seen past the elementary arc of the anime, so I can't tell you where to stop reading. I had the opposite problem, I saw the first half of the series and wanted to watch the rest but 'settled' for the manga instead. I ended up enjoying the last half of the manga so much I went back and bought/read the first half. I can say now that I enjoy the manga as much, if not more, than the anime.
Thanks :)
But I think I figured it out on where to stop reading. I heard that Eps 53 started when the main characters attend junior highschool, right? Then I think I'll just stop reading when they finished primary school.
So this is one of those titles that manga version is superior to anime? hmm.. I just finished Fruits basket anime and can confidently say that it's superior to manga in terms of enjoyment(it made me laughing non-stop). Actually I'm interested in Kodocha because people says it reminds them of Fruits basket ^_^
You should absolutely not watch the second half of the series before the first half.
So, to avoid the temptation to do so, I suggest that you sent me your copies of the show, and I will keep them safe for you.
(The fact that I have only seen the first half and would love to see the rest, has absolutely no bearing on this at all.):p
Now I just finished reading the manga at the point when they r starting middle school. I believe eps 53 in the anime start at this point, right? It was only 4 volumes of manga which is equal to eps 1-52 of anime??? I've a feeling that I just missed many important story points. Or I just missed many filler eps??? :hmm:
Or I just missed many filler eps??? :hmm:
Yes, as I mentioned earlier, the anime is full of filler. You still get the same story in the manga, just without all the extra fluff.
I saw the first 25 eps, then read the entire manga series, then watched through to the end of primary school. I am afraid to see what filler they add to the last half of the series, I am worried it could ruin the story to some degree. I know there were filler episodes in the first 50 eps that I could have done without :(

I've seen the entire series and i thought it was really good! Once they got out of primary school things changed abit!( the pace ) there was more drama than comedy. I had to have a box of tissues beside me... I know I'm sentimental. I Never read the manga so I really can't compare them. But I can say I that the second half does have some fillers. Kodomo no Omocha kinda reminds me of Marmalade Boy!! does anyone agree?
Kodomo no Omocha kinda reminds me of Marmalade Boy!! does anyone agree?
I'm such a wimp. I wanted to see Marmalade Boy very badly because of the comparisons to Kodocha, but since it was licensed with no forseeable release date I read the manga instead. Now I have the same problem I am having with Kodocha. From what I have heard the side stories in Marmalade Boy the anime are going to aggrivate me. I want to watch, but I am scared. A grown woman afraid of anime. I need therapy
KTP should just start with 40. 1 - 39 are easy to get on kazaa but after that it's really hard to get the episodes.
edit: guess i should read the entire thread next time

Erm, to answer your questions, I think the the fansubbing stopped back in April when the licensing of Kodocha by Funimation Inc was announced, and I think they're releasing the first batch of episodes next spring/summer [or so they're probably praying lol :joke: ]; if you want to get your hands on them for free, I don't see how I can help you, but you could do what I did and purchase the DVD sets ; most of the subbing is okay, though the end of the first boxset was absolutely incomprehensible [I think between eps. 39 or 40 to 51 it was terrible, mostly closer to 40; I had no idea what that entire story arc was talking about...grr... ]. *sigh* Lets cross our fingers and pray as well for a timely and successful outcome of the Funimation licensing...
:topicoff: Anyways, as I've just finished watching all 102 episodes, I've got to express my opinion...:
WHAT THE HECK WAS UP WITH THE END OF EPS. 102???????????????? DOES THE SERIES [I]REALLY END THAT WAY??????????????? WHY??????????????? AND WHATS WITH THE TO-BE-UNFULFILLED END TEASERS??????????????????????? WHATS GOING ON????????????????????????????????????? Someone else who's seen it, PLEASE tell me what the heck the last few minutes of that episode was all about.......

According to AnimeOnDVD (http://www.animeondvd.com/news/news.php?news_view=5049) the first volume has been scheduled for June 26th, 2005.
Since it has been licensed, downloading of Kadocha are likely to make your feet smelly, cause you to become impotent and break out in hives.
I wonder HOW they're going to release it. For some reason, I'm expecting Marmalade Boy style boxes.

Has anyone else bought this one on DVD yet?
I thought the dubs for the most part are pretty good :D
I have (2) negative comments thus far:
(1) Original opening missing
obviously couldn't afford to buy the rights to whomever has it :( They used the second OP instead.
(2) Sana's VA-dub
She's pretty close to capturing the "true" Sana personia, however she does come across as slightly annoying, and I never had that feeling in the sub.
I highly recommend for anyone who loves this series to buy the Manga. I believe there are only 10 or 11 Volumes. I purchased Vol. 4 and UP.
The manga will help those who are in NEED of an ending :D (and a proper one at that-rare in anime at times!)

This was not a case of "Could not afford". This was a case of "Would not allow." Tokio would not allow FUNi to use any of their music or their likeness in the series.

Yup, but it's the fans the suffer  Thanks gosh it was only one song that was omitted.
If the music was created exclusively for Kodocha, I really don't understand not also allowing FUNi to have it..... however I'm not an artist so I can't even begin to understand. :twitch:
Thank God for fansubs!
Music is so important to an anime, people may want to consider this before using certain artists....but that aside, I mean even IF One Piece had a great English dub, without the music, is still would so suck

It isn't annoying enough for me to stop buying the DVD's :D
Hayama's dance kick step was amusing in the old first animated OP also, so I miss seeing that.
I also bought BOTH the Kodocha OST's (yes, from proper local Japan importer), so :p the His music is in american anyways

Since you don't mind importing from Japan, you might want to see if Anime Jungle has used copies of the Japanese R2 DVDs of Kodocha. As far as I remember, they're rather cheap (comparatively). And if you're of the adventurous type, you can splice together the OP from the Japanese DVD with the episode from the English DVD and add in subtitles from Script Club or something for the opening song and then create your own personal DVD for viewing. :)
In my opinion, the Kodocha dub SUCKS not only for the bad voice acting but because it's edited!!
Example dialogue:
(Japanese)
Sana: Rei-kun, let's sleep together!
Rei: Ok.
Mama: Don't teach her anything more than a kiss on the cheek until she's out of grade school. *glare glare* (lol)
(English)
Sana: Rei, let's sleep together!
Rei: Ok.
Mama: Rei, I don't want you two up dancing all night. *glare glare*
....ok so WTF!?
Anyone notice the blank spots in the dialogue because of copyright issues!? Sorry, I'm keeping my fansubs. :P To add, Babbit's voice is ATROCIOUS. I've never seen a non-televised series handled so badly! >_<

I see the on-line stores have now started to list a release date for the second Kodocha box along with Vol 7 and 8 (which are different to the dates currently shown on the AoD Upcoming Releases page).
Kodocha Babbit Box 2 (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=733560), release date 8th August 2006
Kodocha Vol 7 (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=733508), release date 22nd August 2006
Kodocha Vol 8 (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=733493), release date 22nd August 2006
Currently, the AoD Upcoming Releases (http://www.animeondvd.com/releases/releases_by_date.php) shows Vol 7 as having a release date of 27th June 2006.
06-27-2006 Kodocha Vol. #07 (also w/box) (of 24) FUNimation Entertainment, Ltd. 100 29.98/44.98
I assume that the Babbit Box 2 will be similar to the first box set and will include Vol 7 along with the box but I read in another post on AoD that it will contain Vol 7 and 8 (but judging by the price this doesn't seem to be the case).
All the same, it's a bit odd that Vol 7 and 8 are being released on the same day but the Babbit Box 2 is being released two weeks earlier. Could anyone confirm what is exactly part of the Babbit Box 2, I just assume it will be Vol 7 (and maybe something extra like the Babbit Bag that was included in the first box set).
Can't seem to find any info on the Funi site either.
Well, on the Right Stuff listing they have it as both volumes come with the box.
Kodocha (Kodomo No Omocha) DVD 7 and 8 (Hyb) + Artbox + Plush
This Premium Collector's Box is designed to hold volumes 7-13 and comes with a Limited-Edition Babbit Plush and both volumes 7 and 8 (episodes 25-32) of Kodocha.
The title also says with a plush, but the details don't mention it. Their price is 44.98 retail/33.74 which isn't bad for a box and 2 volumes.
Deep discount doesn't' have any details, but the same retail price and their price of 27.21.
Well, on the Right Stuff listing they have it as both volumes come with the box.
The title also says with a plush, but the details don't mention it. Their price is 44.98 retail/33.74 which isn't bad for a box and 2 volumes.

Gosh! DVDPacific (http://www.dvdpacific.com/item.asp?ID=733560) have the box set for $25.99, so if that's for volume 7 and 8 and the box, then it's a great price. That's only a couple of $s more than the price I would expect for a box and first volume!
I am soooo not buying Kodocha from Funimation simply because I like my anime to have ALL the audio along with it, not this "sorry-there's-gonna-be-a-few-blank-spots-in-the-dialogue-because-of-copyright-stuff" crap.
Bit me, Funi. You could have put more effort into it and made this a great project but sadly, you didn't.

i want a limited edition doll! :)
has any pics been released?
Guys, I have a question.
Is the Babbit Box 2 the LAST box set released for this anime?
I wanted to watch the whole series :( and I don't have time to download so I was thinking of just buying the boxsets. But I won't buy it if the series won't even be completed and released in the US. Pretty pointless to only buy up to what, 37 episode or whatnot, and not have the whole series after that.
Thanks!

The original license was for the entire 102 episode series, so the plan was to release all of it. Recently there has been some reports that due to low sales there is a question about the series beyond episode 52. But I do not think this has been confirmed, it's only a rumour. Bottom line, if people do not purchase the DVDs then it's unlikely to see completion.
And so far the first 52 episodes (not 37) have been released. The 13th volume containing eps 49 to 52 has just been released.
Kodocha has been licenced by Funmation for a few years now & they air it on the Funmation & Colours channels (Select Cable & Satellite Providers).
They had been re-showing the first 35 episodes over & over again for a while but have recently started to air episodes 36-52. (All episodes are english subs)
Just thought you might want to know.

can someone tell me what the filler episodes are so I can skip them, I've seen this show up to episode 40 or so...
Finished this series recently, review here (http://omohide.com/2220/kodomo-no-omocha-review/).
I really enjoyed the beginning and ending arcs of the show. The middle sections tended to drag a little because of the lack of Hayama-Sana chemistry, which is definitely the most enjoyable thing about the show. However the formula returned at the end and trying out this show ended up being quite a rewarding investment. I have the two boxsets in my possession already.
Does Funimation's license include the OVA?
I don't know what their license terms are, but they have only released episodes 1-52 officially.
The "OVA" is more like a prototype pilot that is overridden by the series, so I doubt they'd be interested in it.

Yeah, I found out about this recently after buying the 2 DVD boxsets thinking they each contained the same episodes as the Japanese LD boxsets... WRONG!!! :frustrated:

I've got the original tape, but it's getting quite old now and is looking a bit wobbly, so I'll need to invest in a time base corrector* if I want to make a good enough capture for subbing. I don't want to go to that much expense if I can't then release it.
* I do own a TBC, but it's built into my old genlock card which iirc requires a 486 or Pentium 1 based PC! Unsurprisingly, I no longer own either of those, grrr!

I remember Funimation indicated that they only licensed what they have released. Apparently, the series did not do as well as they would have liked. The rep I spoke with told me that they instead went and licensed other things like One Piece. I know that is popular, but I cannot stand the character designs nor the plot. It is making money for them, but I would rather have the rest of Kodocha.
Regarding the first opening... The band Tokio apparently wanted to much money for the use of their song.
http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/13.html lists this in the '96 series with 102 episodes. Prior to this an OVA was produced in '95 (pilot?). My question: was that licensed along with the main series that followed it or is it something we could list?

The OVA isn't licensed; if it is, it's some dormant license that Funimation/someone's squatting on and not using. I can't imagine Animesuki listing this series, since at least part of it's been licensed, ntm this series is very old and run its course. Not sure any fansub groups would be willing to sub the remaining 50 episodes. :/ There might be some already done a long time ago though, dunno if anyone would still be seeding those.
Just gotta Google for some subs, I guess.
Yes, there are fansubs of the remaining 50 episodes, and yes, with some dedication you can get a hold of them. The subs are of varying quality, though.
