View Full Version : Why do you like Anime?

For me its because with anime you get alot more care and effort being put into the work. When comparing say a ghibli film and a disney film, the amount of concentration thats gone into making each and every detail amazing and dazzling, is clear in the gihbli film. However with the Disney I feel like its been more quickly produced, not alot of thought gone into it and it hasnt really had much care taken over things like voice acting, soundtrack and animation.
So in terms of animation Anime is my preferable medium.
Thats why i like anime.
I adore their art, their OST's are often amazing, and also most of them aim at more mature audiences so they have a lot more violence, ecchi-ness, drug use, etc. What's more is that their story-lines are often a lot more in-depth, epic and dramatic. They are often more humorus and the comedy in them goes a lot further as their are more mature jokes and references. Use Kogami Akira to examine that, ofcourse in the original Japanese version.
Some of them also go onto ground in which other animators would never dare tread, just watch Elfen Lied for example. I cannot imagine their ever being a western animation project that resembles that. Nudity, dettached limbs, child exploitation...and other things such as that.
Above all is the story and such though. Also the quality of the animation.

Its another form to narrate a story. They look good and because its animated, so no real actors and almost fictional places(not realy ;)), it could let you fall into a new world. Unlimeted characters can be created and in animes happen things, they never would show in real films, cause it looks only good in animes, for example magic or some powerfull fights. The comedy is outstanding, since there can be done so many jokes, gags and funny missunderstandings, that can only be shown in anime series. Uptill now, every anime i had watched, has a beginning(meeting of persons or whatever you want), a main story(what happens to the persons) and an ending(what is the result of the actions of the persons). In my opinion, anime is a very enjoyable entertainment. :D :)
In my back of my dustbin, called memory, there's a little light that tells me, maybe there was a thread like this before.
Why I love animes? Because they're good. I don't watch TV, because most of shows are bad. So I watch animes. As for Disney: The old ones were the best, the new, mass-produced CG crap... well, crap. And when we combine animes and Disney, we get Kingdom Hearts. I love that game.
So why I love anime? Because there's nothing better than that in the televisual media. It's like World of Warcraft. It's popular because there's nothing better than that. Like that is the pinnacle of MMO, Anime is the pinnacle of animation.
And the things that the other posts above mentioned.

lol, I actually used to hate anime. I grew up with three younger brothers who all watched (and still do watch) Dragonball Z, and I hated it. It wasn't until I moved in with my boyfriend last year and he made me watch Cowboy Bebop that I realized some of this stuff is really, really good.
I like it because it's different than everything else out there, and it's kind of an escape, you know? It's just fun to watch space cowboys shoot people and schoolgirls fall in love. Plus, I'm a little squeamish about violence in movies (unless it's deliberately over-the-top), and anime violence doesn't really bug me. And some of the animation/artwork is really beautiful, which is always a plus.

Why I love anime? There's a whole lot of reasons, but I ain't gonna lie: I watch anime particularly for it romance aspect. The majority has it (even ones that are aimed for the younger generation, strangely enough), and the majority of that contains the childhood friend archetype, and the majority of those actually 'wins' in the series. If any of the above trends changes in the near future, I'll probably seek out another medium in which the trend is higher. But as of now, the trends are in acceptable levels for me. XD

For me, this isn't a black and white answer but it's also not an emotional, meaningful, or wise answer. Simply put, I enjoy anime more than stuff shown on American TV. There might be shows and movies that I like, but only anime will I re-watch for their value and/or enjoyment.

I know what you mean, there is a certain trend for anime to reflect romance in a more appealing light than say any other form of animation. The japanese do it so well for some reason. Maybe its the romance animes set around japaese schools, i love those.
the new, mass-produced CG crap... well, crap
That's quite a generalization there. I'm as surprised as anyone that no care went into Ratatouille or Finding Nemo.....Also, I hear they were created in a factory
Anyways...I don't have any particular "preference" for anime over other mediums. It's just a genre in which you can find some bad stories and some very great ones. I don't generalize all cartoons as being childish, and this allows me to enjoy the anime out there which are of high quality. I'm not the kind of person who watches anime just because it's anime, and I feel that the majority of anime, like anything else, isn't really that great . But I'm not going to ignore the good ones just because they're animated...I also like the exoticism of watching something produced from a different environment/culture...
Because I was to cheap to buy a tv so I started to watch it on my PC.
5 years later I still dont own one and I have completely closed myself out to any other forms of visual entertainment. Quite sad when you think about it, and I know there is a lot of good material to be found outside anime. But I guess my foolish pride won't allow me to go there yet, not until I find myself completely feed up with this.
Now if you'll excuse me I need keep going with this 48hours marathon.

I've been watching a lot more anime recently because State-side entertainment is shit.
Hollywood depends on recycled cash cows and feeding on franchises that already have an established fanbase (i.e Anime/Comic etc). Creativity and originality are thoughts far outside of Hollywoods scope as of late.

I have pondered this question before.
I think what sets anime apart is that out of all formats, it is the closest to a direct link to the imagination.
In essence, live action gives you more information than you could possibly have imagined. It creates a wall between yourself and what you are watching.
Watching an anime is almost like you yourself are imagining the story as it happens; it seems to take place in your own head. It allows you to feel like you are a part of it much more than live action.

so many reasons.... sooo many...... hmm let me just plot out a few,
i like anime because of the....
- the artwork and animation
- the creative and fantastic storylines
- katanas rule!
- the action
-katanas rule!
-cartoon + slice of life = complete awsomeness
thats pretty much the basics in a nutshell

Anime is a lot more blatant about catering to pedophiles, than mainstream American entertainment could be for the foreseeable future.. All the moe, lolicon, fanservice, doujinshi, etc.
American... mainstream for the pedos?
Not seen a lot of Hannah Montana and some of the recent reality shows and crime shows, eh? :)
The nice thing about anime is.. .that it is animated. No kittens harmed and all that.
As to why *I* like anime,
0) I don't automatically like it just because it is anime...
1) Anime tellsl stories I don't find on American television outside of PBS anymore.
2) There's a sense of some aspects of japanese culture in anime that I find abysmally lacking in American culture on television (e.g. slice of life, nostalgia).
Note: it *used* to be there -- its long gone though.
3) I find many aspects of asian culture interesting to study - japanese pop culture is one aspect.
4) I watch a few hours of my particular anime favorites and I feel less inclined to hate the world. The opposite happens when I watch broadcast primetime commerical television.
5) Lets fire up the television... lets see... 5 versions of Law&Order (or is it 7?), Various CSI, various serial killer gruesome, various superspookular crime solvers,
Big Brother XXVII, Who wants to be a Plumber/Star/Whore/Cook/Whocares, Extreme Stuff, bread&circuses.... errrr, back to PBS.
5) Much of my family and their friends also watch various forms of anime, so its a family experience.
Because of the artwork, the music, and most important: the story. Todays television program reeks of uncreative crime-dramas and the even worse reality-shows.
I mostly watch animes because there's nothing interesting on T.V. ... Internet is probably the only thing I can have in every country I move (Since my father just can't move somewhere without Internet ...), so ... Yay for anime fansubs.
But that's the main reason why I started, there's plenty of other reasons like ...
- Animation, artwork
- Characters!?
- Storyline, really ... I don't think you'll find an extraordinary and developed storyline in something like Hannah Montana.ô_o
- Anyway ... Just cannot go outside without being disgusted by people's comportment.

I like anime because it can range from any age, has awesome artwork, great animation, and the extraordinary original voices of the characters. :D
Vexx pretty much nailed it. Whats available on TV over here for the most part just does not interest or appeal to my tastes anymore. Anime more often provides the intersting and unique forms of storytelling and escapism that I desire. As well, the art and animation is also usually better done and more appealing to me than the kind that comes out of our own usual tv cartoons. I also enjoy the unique japanese culture aspects to alot of anime shows as well.
I personally don't worry about the difference between anime and other forms of motion video; I just watch what I like. I don't find myself wanting to "watch anime only", nor do I find myself trying to avoid it either.
Got sucked in by Voltron, Saber Rider and the Star Sheriffs, Thundercats, and Dragonball. Havent grown out of it since. Plus anime is fantasy made for the viewing pleasure. So many worlds, concepts and imagination that can not be compared.

The voice acting. It constantly boggles my mind how one single lady can do roles as diverse as Claymore's Clare, Melody of Oblivion's Bocca, Flay and Stellar from CE and Azumanga Daioh's Kagura.

I love stories. The format doesn't matter. Comics, autobiographies, novels, e-books, newspapers- anything. Anime provides such a wide range, too; I can find practically anything I'm interested in. Tales with humor, or depth, or drama- or a combination of any of those.
So many lovely stories.

The voice acting is a large part of the experience for me as well, as well as the aesthetics. The stories can often be a selling point, though not necessarily. There's a lot to like about anime, though I often have trouble putting into words what those things are.
i dont exactly know why i like anime. i just do. i enjoy watching them espcially if they're fun
ghibli? Is that a company?
Anywho, I like anime because, as it was said, it's more mature, but not in an Adult Swim, these cartoons are just cartoons, they're real stories, like a serious live-action show, but the people are animated and they can do whatever you want them to...
I've seen some live-action counterparts to anime series like the Negima live-action series and the people and events looks absolutely ridiculous!
But to add to the first point, anime is great because it can also be for little kids too.
The industry has such a wide range, truly there's something for everyone.
Plus, it's ultra fun to watch.

I have pondered the question too, and this is a very good explanation. Anime is so much intenser for me than live action. Drama in anime can easily bring me to tears, comedy can bring me to tears of laughter. A brilliant anime being over can often make me feel somewhat depressed for a while, which is somehow an extraordinary experience in itself I think. Regular films and series can make me feel somewhat sad, or have me laugh a bit, but not much more than that usually.
I also tend to get really attached to the characters in anime series, while characters in regular series or films can die a dramatic death without me caring much. Anime connects much better with the subconscious mind. Kind of like how books do.
I really love anime, it's alternate universes I can temporarily get sucked into, and all the emotions it creates.

As with most forms of entertainment, it is an escape from reality. I find that anime does an excellent job at that, usually. Of course, storyline, art quality, and various other bits are reasons, but
Vexx pretty much nailed it.

I find myself respecting VAs alot more after my experience with drama CDs. No moving pictures, and for non-Japanese, I actually have to refer to the manga as I listen to the clips. Still, I enjoyed myself immensely, be it with GetBackers or Blaue Rosen (Hoshi Soichiro and Saiga Mitsuki hams it up big time over there).

Quite lame of me, but I'm a big sucker for well done opening credits and ending credits. Damn those catchy theme songs! In fact, I've stayed with some series that seemed quite boring, but the stuff in the beginning and end just compelled me to go on. Occasionally, this paid off, (Nanoha, Eva) but even if I end up hating the show I have a better argument since i watched it all. :P Maybe I just like bright and vibrant colors.
Another thing is that they sometimes manage to surprise me, which keeps me entertained. Whether it's a compelling story line, a bizzare mind screw, or just completely out of the way randomness I can't seem to find it elsewhere. Animation lets you do a bunch of strange things I guess if you're creative enough. It's no suprise that my favorite western shows like Futurama and Family guy are animated as well. Just how far can you take people's minds?

Real life just doesn't bring me any strong feelings about anything. at all. I suppose I'm emotionally detached from reality (for many reasons)
So, I find what's missing in watching anime, reading manga, and playing visual novels. Without them my mind and heart would simply freeze over and break.

Yeap, this makes total sense to me. I really enjoy anime for the stories, characters, animation, feelings it can provoke, and well, cute girls in skirts...:)...but I really enjoy American movies and TV shows, with cable there's so much to watch, and with life, not enough time to do it, but ehh, I watch what I can when I can.

Though I suppose it has to be variety, American TV shows like Vexx said are mostly terrible, and K-Drama or J-Drama are just too boring since the story is way to too cliche, predictable, and freaking 99% is love story (except the historical ones). Of course anime do have lot of its own cliche but the there are lot of variations for story and really compare to other type of media it is more imaginative. Recently I have begin to lose faith in anime but after shows like Baccano! and TTGL it has restored back the faith, and reminded me why I still watch anime.

The art is why. The stories, the plots, the character developments, the settings, these we've seen before in movies and TV, but the art is what conspicuously sets the genre apart from anything else out there. Live action films and TV shows are great, but animation can bring a sense of depth and breadth to the visual world we see and realize all forms of fantastic phenomena that live action just cannot do without itself incorporating animation techniques.
And so far as I have seen, there is nothing in animation elsewhere that can compare to the variety of art styles put into Japanese anime. I've watched no Pixar or Dreamworks animation that I could enjoy because the art is always crudely disgusting. The characters designs are always caricatures that are eye sores. Even when anime studios have to outsource production tasks to foreign facilities, their ugliest output is still far above the quality of domestic cartoons that make up part of American TV programming. Bleh.
As if the art alone wasn't good enough, anime uses musical scores far superior to those used in cartoons from anywhere else in the world. We have names we can latch onto, Yoko Kanno, Taku Iwasaki, Yuki Kajiura, Toshihiko Sahashi, Hikaru Nanase, Mina Kubota, Toshio Masuda, Kenji Kawaii, I've Sound to name several because of the fine memorable themes they use to enhance the aural dimension and emotional impact of scenes. And the scores of jpop performers add distinctive performances to opening ending credit music.
Anime just kicks ass!

Kashimashi was based off of a manga series, though you're right.
Several popular series are original: Cowboy Bebop, Gurren Lagann, Code Geass, FLCL, etc.
i totally agree with cowboy man (starter of this thread). but i also like anime becaus of the freedom the authors have, which allows them to do what they please. eg ecchi, fanservice
I like anime because I find the stories compelling and the characters interesting. I also like how, since it's just artwork, they are free to explore whatever they want w/o worry about special effects or sets or anything like that. I frequently find myself "addicted" to watching a good anime show, but I rarely find anything on cable that makes me want to spend all afternoon watching ep after ep. I just finished Shakugan no Shana, watched 48 episodes in three days. Probably would've been two if it weren't for going to work, heh. I can't think of the last time a show on cable gave me the same feeling.. ok, actually I can. Babylon 5, back in 1998 :)
I suppose I'm emotionally detached from reality (for many reasons)...
I can relate to that. My experience with reality has been pretty harsh. The escapism factor in anime is a big plus for me. It just gives so much for the imagination to latch onto. And I'm a big daydreamer... I can get lost in my own thoughts very easily. So the artwork in anime is a big factor for me because it comes from the imaginations of creative minds. Sometimes, I can be absolutely spellbound and captivated just from the visual appeal alone.
I've always loved animation. I used to live for the Saturday morning cartoons Hot Wheels and Sky Hawks (back when Saturday morning cartoons had some substance), and I never got tired of watching reruns of Johnny Quest (the 1960's stuff, not the 80's crap). So, when I discovered anime I was fascinated by the style and the characters and the depth of many of the stories.
I could go on about the emotional impact that many anime stories have had on me, even to what I would consider therapeutic levels, but suffice to say... I've shed more tears over anime stories than I ever have over anything from Hollywood.
...and well, cute girls in skirts...:)
I would like to emphasize that - A never ending supply of cute girls in short skirts. :D

I have been into cartoons and comics for a long time because of my father who is also into cartoons and comics, and I suppose it's no surprise that I was attracted to anime and manga, but I'm one of the folks who doesn't really understand why I watch anime and read manga. I have been into this hobby for such a long time that it's something that I just "do" this days, almost as if it were a "good" habit that I love to have.
But when it comes to why I like manga more than anime, well, that would be because I feel like manga is unlimited. Yeah, manga and anime both need to be successful to survive, but the kinds of stories that are animated are limited because it needs to appeal to the masses in order to earn back the large amounts of money that went into the animation. However, I love manga because you can find a manga about almost anything, not to mention you can usually really see the creator(s)'s love for manga through their work because it's almost entirely theirs. I guess what I am trying to say that in addition to the variety of stories, I like the "heart" that you can find moreso in manga than in anime. ;)

What is it about these intricate fantasies that makes you cling to your viewing screen begging for more?
Could it be that you wish that you yourself were the character in the anime you are viewing?
And why don't typical shows do it for you, could it be they are not imagainative enough and sickenly boring? *cough*
The perfected bodies, ideal personalities, surreal and colorful design...
Could it be it's an easy outlet/escape from disgusting and distasteful "reality" as we all love to call it?
I'm interested.
I'll tell you why i watch; reality is fucking boring and i wish something exciting would happen everyday. Anime (well...some anime.) gives me this release. I find an outlet by following the characters and story line that i desperately wish i could be apart of. (ie: Light yagami in death note, love hina, outlaw star...)
Share thoughts please, why do you watch anime?

Anyway, I guess I've just gotten used to looking at the anime style, in the broadest sense of the term. Otherwise, it's because I feel that there's more exposure to different types of ideas in anime than there is on television.
Oh, and moe. Can't forget that.
could you be an intp Levistus?
anyways there's many reasons why people watch anime.
it can be simple reason like:
"looks prettier than ugly american cartooons"
Other reasons include
1. Fetish: moe, maid, etc etc fan-services to keep the viewers entertained
2. deeper themes and issues being addressed. Animation in Western culture often don't go to philosophical context very much.
3. fantasy element: anime can do what reality TV can't. + Japanese people are very creative.
And like computer games it is indeed used as escape tool from reality.
Unlike real people, anime is really simplified so on physical beauty level it is appeasing to almost everyone. And since most shows don't develop the character's personality in huge details, one can fill the gap way he/she wants.
So it is easier to fantasize (err that sounds bit wrong) about the characters.
And lot of anime carries the plot of some hot girls like "AVERAGE" guy no reason All of a sudden. OR You are the chosen one who have the power to save the world, etc etc. It is indeed written for those who are dreamers. By watching it you feel like wanting to be the character, and thats why lot of anime tries to connect the main character with the "Expected viewer. "
So once they fantasize about it, the only way to get back to that world of fantasy is to watch the next episode. Its recurring cycle.
personally
I watch it for sake of inspiration, since i'm a fashion designer i need to be inspired by something. also i'm learning japanese.
err, its so late, ill repost tommorow idk what in the world im writing right now.
I prefer watching animated stories than acted ones. I just find it nicer and more entertaining.
Due to the great variety of genres and topics and their continued new releases, there is always something new to choose from and watch.
Besides many of the topics like fantasy or sci-fi cannot be presented very well with normal tv series due to high production values that they will have, making the choises very narrow.

I guess you could say that:
I'm a dreamer with high standards and ideals;
I have a fascination for logical wholes & my inner workings are often expressed in a detached fantasy environment, i often just see life as a boring game that i toy with and make more interesting.
Can you blame me though?
I guess you could call me optimistically cynical -_^
So once they fantasize about it, the only way to get back to that world of fantasy is to watch the next episode. Its recurring cycle.

I watch it for sake of inspiration, since i'm a fashion designer i need to be inspired by something. also i'm learning japanese.
Most anime/gaming environments suit my aspirations perfectly, how you decribe it is exactly how anime the process goes for me.
I also use it for inspiration and to expand my perspectives; i'm a musician and a writter.
Anime has been enhancing & producing tons of my creativity lately.
I'm learning japanese as well so i can actually be worth someones time and meet new people when i go to japan this christmas. I took 3 years of japanese in high school and forgot fucking everything, lol..
Worst mistake i've made in life by far, you really gotta keep studying it all the time.

QFT. It's entertaining.
I mainly like anime because of the creative futuristic and supernatural stuff they come up with.
There's countless "what ifs" in the world. Anime is a great way to visualize it.
Some interesting "what ifs" that I watched recently are:
- eve no jikan... what if androids started exercising freedom and got to a point where humans had trouble differentiating them from true humans using only our personal senses.
- planetes... what do you do with trash in space? Seems simple, but it's interesting to be able to visualize what would happen with the other options.
- a detective one where they use a memory scanning machine to solve crimes. Himitsu _something. Would you reconsider your actions if you knew that your memories or other people's memories of you could be scanned?

I watch for the artwork and story, but mostly the story, I swear their stories are so much better then the shows/crap stories they come up with in hollywood xD

I like anime because the artwork is less disproportionate than American cartoons, and the eyes don't look like big white balls with tiny black dots in them. The artwork has more effort put into it and the stories are intricate and not stupid and pointless...usually.
well , I do watch TV but I like anime due to the characters since I think they have more depth( some of them ) and some storylines are really good. :)
It's refreshing to watch something that's not so westernized

I guess its because there is nothing on American TV that is good except maybe South Park and a couple of shows on the USA network. I find that most animes tend have more plot and the characters look more human than American styled cartoons.

the artwork and because of the storylines, there is not much/ too little on the same level of imagination. American shows are not ont he same level when it comes to audience, the releases are btw super strange (once followed a show and then it just stopped for a couple of months or the episodes were mixed up). the music in anime is a lot better, in other words the japanese take the subject a lot more serious than any other country does and they're not affraid to think utside the box and standard rules
