Website ads aren't really all that annoying. However, most of them are run by a few small companies. They can use cookies to track what websites you visit!
Here are opt-out links for major advertisers:
Doubleclick http://www.doubleclick.com/us/about_doubleclick/privacy/ - click "Ad Cookie Opt-Out"
Advertising http://www.advertising.com/OptOut2.html - verify
ValueClick http://www.mediaplex.com/mplx_privacy.shtml#_Toc41282072 - verify
Other advertisers, such as PayPal (http://www.paypalsucks.com/) and other scummy companies, don't have opt-out links. If you use I.E. (http://ashitaka-san.home.comcast.net/yayrant/ieharmful.html), you are out of luck. But if you use Mozilla (http://mozilla.org/), Netscape or Firebird, you can block banner ads with this nifty script:
http://adblock.mozdev.org/
Mozilla (http://mozilla.org/) also allows you to block cross-site cookies with the click of a button.
