I've been watching the series since I started college and once animesuki popped up with the forums I hear a lot of people referring to the novels. I'd love to know where I can purchase them. I've got a friend who can read japanese but if they're out there in english that would be great. If not I'd like to know if there is a website around with a synopsis of the books. Thanks alot for your help guys.

Go to Amazon Japan.

The novels are:

In addition, the short stories in which most of the "Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu" is based on are as follows:

放っておけない一匹狼?
本気になれない二死満塁?
自慢にならない三冠王?
同情できない四面楚歌?
どうにもならない五里霧中?
あてにならない六法全書?
安心できない七つ道具?

Probably easier to search it under the author's name: 賀東招二

I don't know much about non-Japanese OSes. The are numerous threads around on this board on how to enable Japanese capability on a Western-languaged based OS, so I can't help you much further...

And, since this is Amazon Japan, it is rather pointless to write it in romaji as it won't come up anyway.

Solution: get your OS to enable displaying Japanese.

You can do it either when you install any Windows OS. When they ask you to input your computer settings they ask which language you'd like to install as the primary. You can then install secondary language packs to enable scripts in those languages. Insert your Windows CD and search for those Install files. They've got the be on there somewhere.

Note: I know this is a fact for Windows XP and ME. Others I'm not to sure about.

This is going to sound really dumb, but when you say "novel," are you talking about a large collection of writing or a graphic novel? If it's an actual novel that goes along with the manga, it would mean this story has been elaborated far more than I ever imagined.

I did a search on one of those items listed above and didn't come up with any images.

The former. "Full Metal Panic" anime is based on the original novel written by Gatoh Shoji with insert illustrations done by Shiki Doji.
