Your description basically sums up the premise to Shakugan no shana. And since you liked Zero no Tsukaima, maybe you'll like Shana (from my experience, people who like one of them often like the other). Shana however is more serious in tone, and in that case, the female character is definitely more powerful than Yuji (the male lead) who's almost like a male damsel-in-distress at times. The characterization is pretty good IMO, particularly for shana. Plus, the same seiyuu who play louise and Saito play Shana and Yuji.

Chrno Crusade-might be or not be what you're looking for; chrno is a demon and contracts with rose, though chrno takes the form of a normal, though weak looking human, with the sacrafice of time he can unleash his true potential. Rose, the second protagonist is an outgoing, loud(but caring), skilled exorcist, combos with chrno to of course exorcise demons as well as quest for her brother

Code Geass-Lelouch is weak physically but dominates when it comes to strategy. Though hes the mastermind behind the rebellion against his father, the emperor, Kallen, his ace pilot does the dirty work on the battlegrounds

Elfien Lied-action pretty much comes from the girl, guy is just the emotional character needed in every anime

Elemental Gelade-though the main protag only has his spirit/ego to keep his promise, the girl holds most of the power

Kanokon-similar to rosario+vampire, the main character is put in perverted situations, suffers/enjoys naughty acts, and goes through trouble here and there

Nagasarete Airantou-Guy is pretty much the weak guy but comes through when the time is right. Surrounded and stranded by an utopia of big breasted females who are dying to be his lover

Fate/Stay Night-Protag is the caring type;kind, caring, and easily taken advantage of, and eventually gets dragged into the war of the holy grail. Saber, his servant desires to win the war, though his agenda is to prevent any more casualties

Shingetsutan Tsukihime-similar situation to F/S N, from same creators of course so you'll get the same feeling
