full moon wo sagashite..not completely sad..but has its moments. Very much the emotional roller coaster. It is a great one to watch..enjoyable for all :d and is something you can dl off this site.

if you want to shell out money (and it's well worth it) go buy grave of the fireflies.....it's a damn good/sad anime movie.

indeed it is. verymuchso. i'd recommend serial experiments:lain - it has quite an effect when you watch it all at once...
FLCL made me cry like a baby every time Carnival started playing, but this doesn't seem to be a consensus opinion. oh, and the end of haibane renmei. that's good. and the final credits of nekojiru-sou (so, so creepy...) ...

Video Girl Ai (manga is much more sader)
Saikano
Key the metal idol (the op/ed itself is depressing)

Lain is a very good one to try, but don't count on, well pretty much anything really. It's one of those shows that plays to the subconscious and engages parts of the mind that are very different from person to person, so it's very difficult to predict exactly what sort of effect it will have for any given person.

Figure 17 and Gunbuster might be interesting ones to try.

Hitsuji no Uta is very sad, and is currently available on Animesuki. Unfortunately it is not finished yet, which is often a problem when showing shows to new people...

I dont see Hitsuji as sad, more like a horror/Psych/dark themed anime.

So far its only been subbed up to the second ova, theirs a total of 4. I wonder if the those fansubs who subbed the first 2 dropped the series, I hope not cause it be a shame.

Since it's an OVA, the release schedule would be something like one episode per 3 months or even 6 months. I'm too lazy to look it up now but I believe the rest of the episodes are not released yet.

Erm, Grave of the Fireflies isn't a Miyazaki film. It's a Takahata film. Are you one of those people who doesn't know that Ghibli has two great directors?

I like to make another note on grave of the fireflies, it was actually based on a semi-autobiographical novel written by a man who survived the war on the homefront, but whose younger sister died of starvation while in his care.

Just off the top of my head:

Now and Then, Here and There - The creator did a lot of research for this show on the different wars around the world, specifically on the plight of child soldiers. Very Very intense.

Vampire Princess Miyu TV: not excatly sad but very depressing.

Narutaru - only watch the frist 6 eps but form what i heard of the rest of the series very depressing, very sad and very intense.

Violinst of Hamelin - I think Ep 6 had the last joke in the 25 Ep series. The series just get more bloody, sad and depressing down to the last ep. A lack of animenation might put some ppl of though, but the story is top notch.

Also called Hoshi no Koe. You know the guy did the whole anime orignally by himself, a pretty amazing acomplishment. Im waiting for his next project anime to debut called Beyond the Clouds the pilot preview looks amazing.

I never tried to remember which director did which film. I think there are a few which both of them worked together and I can't recall the names as well. Sorry if I offended any Takahata fans. Think next time I should do some research before I talk.

You might try "Windaria". Be warned though, the final scenes alone will probably require a box of tissues. Also, its faily old now (eighties I think) so you may have problems finding a copy.

Ayashi no Ceres. Something girls will like.

Kodomo no Omocha (aka Child's Toy) if you can get past the craziness this is rollercoaster, so many ups, downs, and twist! I was crying most of the time I had a box of tissues beside me.

Oh, don't forget Princess Tutu. Although it might not seem obvious at first, that show is very deep and sad at times--it's a fairy tale, yes, but something more along the lines of the dark and sad fairy tales of Tchaikovsky then the whitewashed ones of today.

One that i really liked and that no one has mentioned is Chinese Ghost Story.

Grave of the Fireflies is a classic by every sense of the word. It has won numerous awards and gained must appraise by critics everywhere including America. Many people get it confused that Miyazaki didn't do this work, however it is listed under his name on the dvd and even posted on his website, he did have a hand in its creation so techniquely it is by him and his studio.

Narutaru might be a bit too much for his girlfriend, i just finished the series 2 days ago and must say that, that anime is really f-ing messed up. Eps 10-13 really get disturbing and are nothing like the 1st 8-9 episodes. Some really messed up stuff happens to those school kids like testtube rape and death. Kite i would definitely not show your girlfriend. It's very violent and has heavy sexual themes and child rape. The uncut is even worse, it shows graphic sex and child rape. Stay far away from that one w/your girlfriend.

It is something like Ghibi's Spirited Away, definitely recommended. :D

Although unfortunately I saw it on a day when I didn't want to be made more sad. But it is still v. good.

Not for some but Koi Kaze is brilliant. very sad and the animation is detailed.
Also, Elfen lied is quite sad... a bit gory though. um. yep this is 3 years out but just incase anybody else is looking for sad anime i'll carry on talking... ok um... Ayashi no ceres... try it.

If your looking for an anime thats in line with Saikano in the sad/suffocating sense then I second Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien and Grave of the Fireflies. Full Moon wo Sagashite also has the right stuff in the sadness department but be forewarned; most of it doesnt show itself near the start of the series

Try Gungrave. Just finish watching it and you'll definitely feel a lot of pain. Trust me on this. Gungrave will be the only anime I'm never gonna watch the second time. Its nice but the whole story is just too dramatic and tragic.

wingdarkness
2006-06-09, 00:26
I actually had been looking forward to watching Gungrave, I even have a couple eps on my HD, but every description talks about this being one of the most depressing animes in the world rather than a pretty good action-packed thriller which I always thought it was, especially based on the video game images and commercials I've always seen...I'm glad I haven't watch it yet, don't think i ever will now...I wanted to be thrilled not cry...

Full Metal Alchemist is a pretty depressing story in spots and is pretty good...

If you want your guts ripped outta your soul and have them laff at you try KGNE(Kimi ga Nozomu Eien)...I was able to watch this with a girl and have postive results after saying stuff like "I'd never leave you even after 3 years baby..."

Yeah it worked^^...

If you really really want a sad anime that's going to make cry then my recommendation to you is to watch AIR. When I said AIR I mean watching all of them: the TV series, the summer special, and the movie. It has a very captivating storyline, plenty of romance (particularly the movie part), and so many things that will make you cry.

Other sad anime(s) you should also try:
-> Kanon (from the same makers of AIR)
-> Diamond Daydreams

-- That's all I can think of - but really, you should watch AIR.

Loveless is good. I know, I know, it's BoyXBoy, but no sex scenes or anything happen, they kiss 1 1/2 times, so bleh. Plus, someone posted Gravitation! Anyways, I love Loveless and it's kind of sad. You should watch it

Yeah, they're still working on the next season. I don't know if it's sad or depressing. It's just the tone of the anime kind of put it in the "sad" slot for me. Not sure :p

here's the list:
Ayashi no Ceres
Fushigi Yuugi

I would add one, the very first one that I saw is sad, X the movie. The song of forever love matches with the final scene... :(

But I would say the manga for some are more sad than the anime itself. But mostly not in the end...

Kannaduki no Miko is kinda sad. I enjoyed it
Onegai Sensai is a nice story gentle roller coaster.
Samurai X (though most people will focus more on the fighting)
