Preview seems to indicate <STRIKE>bullshitting</STRIKE> talking down Ranka. Wish the love triangle was as exciting in the show as it is in real life.

Sheryl was standing and they were hugging. It might have seemed like a faint at first, but if you rewatch it, it's definitely hugging. Whatever precedes the hugging was overwritten by Ranka running up the stairs.

Considering their new support group got as much if not more development in the last 2 episodes that they have got in the last 19 I'll rejoice if it happens, meantime I won't hold my breath.

Well it is understandable: this is a crucial point in the entire series!
Until now Frontier managed to thwart Vajra's assaults without major damages and casualties, but this time it won't go that way. I feel the entire colony fleet will suffer major damage with milions of casualties, among which there will be some beloved persons to the main and second characters.

OMFG. Epic episode
Michel died. ;-; Protecting Klan. She finally admitted her feelings for him too. Poor girl. Michel admitted his feelings when he died.
Other things in this ep:
Ranka was giving off real Minmay vibes to me. She even got a slap. Though it was from Sheryl and not Alto.
Grace is a bitch. She has some weird control over Brera so he can't resist her orders.
Sheryl was awesome this episode and sang Diamond Crevasse to calm the people in the evacuation shelter.

After seeing Alto and Sheryl together, Ranka threw a tantrum, cried and didn't want to sing anymore. Sheryl had to slap some sense into her (yay, Sheryl!) :D
Klan confessed her feelings and kissed Michael just shortly before he gets killed saving her :upset:
Nanase survives...Leon still kills off President Glass...darn. :eyebrow:

Most epic part of the episode is
Sheryl: Ranka-chan, if you are the the songstress of hope then I will sing in the midst of despair.
I'll have to rewatch before having more thoughts.
P.S. This was in the shelter when everyone else was freaking out about how the vajra were still around.

Wow. Sad episode. I knew Michael had a high chance of buying the farm, but I hoped against hope that he'll survive. At least he went out in an epic way. Time to do a requiem AMV. :sad:
Sheryl was epic this episode. Between the slap and the shelter scene, she was truly brilliant.
This episode really is a 10 but I subtracted 2 points for them offing Michael (which means Klan will probably die gloriously before the series end as well :uhoh:).
Sigh. 7 more days to next dose.

When she sang she didn't sing with her heart in it. In fact, she was still emo and moping over the Sheryl and Alto thing. So her fold waves were a mess and caused the Vajra to go into a frenzy and swarm.

Unfortunately, I think the initial shock of that will make Alto blame himself. Because of him, Ranka's singing sucked, and Mikhail died. He'll realize later it's not his fault and runs after Sheryl.

So does it mean that for Ranka's song to work against the Vajra, they have to keep Ranka in good spirits perpetually? :twitch: If some idiot suggests that Alto is now obligated to choose her so that she can be happy for the sake of Frontier, I will kill them! :mad:

Ozma recalls the same thing happening with the 117th fleet. Ranka thinks about how her heart aches while she is singing and causes the Vajra to "power up" in their attacking.
Also when Sheryl is separated from the others by an attack by Vajra,
Sheryl: Go! We'll be fine. Hurry and stop the attack!
Alto: But-!
Sheryl: Who do you think I am?
Alto: I'll definitely come for you. Let's go. Ranka, why are you just standing there?!
In the shelter
Man: What is Ranka Lee doing? Weren't her songs supposed to stop them?
Woman: They said we had escaped!
Man: I knew the government's story sounded too good.
Boy: Are we going to die?
Father: It's all right ?Eddie?. Your mom and the others will definitely protect us. (Canaria's son I think)
Eddie: But...I'm scared, papa.
Father: Don't worry, if I have to I'll protect you even if it costs me my life my life!
Sheryl: Even at the cost of my life.
Alto: There's no way you could walking away from singing. Otherwise your songs would never have reached so many people.

Well, I haven't seen the raws yet, but so far everyone's reports don't surprise... I've been figuring this would all happen, because it's made the most sense dramatically, even if the minutiae are a bit different from my conjecture. There is some sort of link between Ranka (her singing) & the Vajra's attacks that goes beyond simple placation. Sheryl won't just lay down and die, and will continue to sing, and the KlanxMikhail relationship figured heavily in the "who's the next to die" part of the saga, right down to their not declaring their love until the moment of truth. Also, the triangle will get more complicated before it begins to resolve, and I still stand that it won't resolve until the last scene of the series.
I'm looking VERY forward to seeing this eps, but even more for the next 2! Time for the fit to hit the shan! ;)

They escaped from Leon's office by punching out the guards (both did). Later on they were heading to Battle 25 when they came across President Glass' dead body (after Leon finall got him). That's where we saw them last, Cathy crying over her Dad and Ozma comforting her.

As much as I detest Nanase, Ranka didn't even express much concern for her when Nanase was injured. For this and everything else, I must praise Sheryl again. Actually Sheryl was just superb in this episode and as I expected, she was the "voice of reason" both out on the field as well as the shelter that she was nursing Nanase in.
If I were Sheryl, (and perhaps that's a good thing as Sheryl is emotionally and mentally the bigger person here) I would have knocked Ranka senseless and threw her to the Vajra...well...that might not do any good but for her to keep drowing in her own self-pity is VERY unbecoming and it just shows how desperately she NEEDS to grow up.
I'm wondering how she'll redeem herself now....anyhow, I've always respected Sheryl, but my respect has gone infinite. I seriously need to sketch something to pay homage to her bravery and logic.
Meanwhile, I love the fact that Kathy can hold her own in a fight...I do feel terrible that she had to encounter her father's corpse. She's moved up on my ladder of favorites....of course nothing holds a candle to Sheryl and even Michael/Klan in this episode. At least Klan and Michael were able to confess their feelings to each other before Michael heroically perished.

This was an excellent but very very sad.:( :upset: Why Michael??? This ep. confirmed for me why Sheryl deserves Alto and why Ranka doesn't. Sheryl put the welfare of others before herself. What amazed me is how she got the people in the shelter to calm down. This ep. also showed be that Brera might not be the bad guy I thought he was. I was so sad for Klan and Cathy.:sad: I just hope Klan doesn't due anything that would get herself killed.

I've been eagerly switching back and forth from this episode thread and the Romance in Macross thread waiting for a dissection of this episode's implications to the SherylxAltoxRanka relationship.

That's how it's always been though and I would go as far as to say she's spoiled.
Though I wouldn't be surprised with the way things turn out given the fact that
1. Ranka's singing is linked to her emotions so Alto has no choice but to cheer her up.
2. Sherly is dying anyways.
So they'll probably do this to make her character grow into something more mature for Alto

Ozma recalls the same thing happening with the 117th fleet. Ranka thinks about how her heart aches while she is singing and causes the Vajra to "power up" in their attacking.
Vajra: "Our Queen is Sad! WHO DARES TO HURT OUR QUEEN!!?? ALL OF YOU MOTHER*bleep* DIE!! RANKA-JOUSAMA NO TAME NI!!"
I'm still going for the theory that the Vajra Collective wants to pass on the torch to Ranka before they pass on. (I'm still neutral so please don't flame me Sheryl-shippers.)

Ok. I can't believe that I cried but it's the truth, one more time, after Code Geass 19, Macross 20 ...
I loved Michael so his death...even if I knew this will happen, it was a hard moment.
And still hardest since Sheryl's resurection was already a really, really, emotional moment, when she is standing and start to sing...whoa, I already had tears in eyes, but when, during this wonderful song which is Diamond Crevasse, I saw Michael dying in front of Klan...Horrible T_T It was HORRIBLE
And his last words to her, and her, and, and...
But I'm not really angry towards Ranka, I think it's understanble, and I thinks it's too easy to put everything on her fault, we saw that she is a really emotive girl, so, how could we be angry at her to not be able to control her feelings ?
And cause of that, Sheryl could finally slap her :p

I also predicted Ranka would have had a break down and her song wold have been ineffective. I deserve more credit :p
Btw, I liked how Vajra's blood painted Michael blue. Surprisingly fitting. Now, I don't hope they off Klan in the next episode though :( I really hope Brera got a "limiter off" mode and save some named characters :cool:
Also, Ozma and Kathy now are in trouble because they know all. They must be either hiding for the rest of the series or... well... :(

I'm glad about the bitch slap, although you can't blame Ranka too much, she was in shock that Alto wasn't intentionally making that heart in the sky just for her. Then again, I'm saying this based on your opinions and what some of you said about the episode.

Alto has to be crazy not to choose Sheryl. This episode proved that, even though Nanase hated Sheryl and talked bad about her, Sheryl still saved her life. Sheryl is just too awesome for words to describe. Watching episode 20 reminded me that Sheryl is pretty much my favorite anime character of all time.

I really don't like ranka. These past episodes didn't help much in making me like her even more.
However given the way the show's running, I stated that I wouldn't be surprised if that's how everything turns out (Wasn't there an interview that stated that Ranka was suppose to be the love interest?)

I still believe that Ranka's gonna stop singing at the end
Putting out a highlight of the events surrounding Alto-Sheryl-Ranka-Michael-and-the-loli for those dial-up users. Be warned the last episode I have seen is 12, so the following is an account of mostly what happened, rather than why. Yeap, the following might not make sense in some areas. I should also mention that some of you may quickly discover about my level of comprehension of the language. :p
Alto tells Sheryl that she isn't the type to abandon singing just because her singing won't reach to millions of ears. Ranka walks up the step and finds Alto supporting Sheryl in an embrace. Ranka slowly backs away and goes down to the stairs fast. She falls in the process, hitting the ground hard. She utters, "I want to die." A Bajraa stirs up.
The sniper is taking aim at the President. Just when the sniper has a shooting solution, a Bajraa appears in front and kills the sniper.
Alto goes after Ranka. He extends his hand to her and asks her to sing. He believes her singing will calm the Bajraa down which will help to protect the city and its people. A brief flashback later Ranka breaks down in tears. She says she can't bring herself to sing like this, for the sake of fighting the Bajraa. At this point, Sheryl walks in, slaps Ranka, and hugs her tightly. She tells Ranka that she understands perfectly that songs conveys emotion of the moment. Sheryl then goes to say, Ranka is a professional. Sheryl convinces Ranka that she projects a type of strength in her song which Sheryl desires but don't have.
Ranka goes out to sing. In the process she utters in her thought, "my chest hurts." That thought process seems to have projected to the Bajraa as well, and now it wakes up a nest of them.
Alto suggests they go to the SMS where they can employ the weapons. One of the Bajraa attacks at this point which separates Sheryl from the group. Sheryl pleads to Alto to leave her there. Alto still hesitates and Sheryl says, "who do you think I am?" Alto promises he will definitely come back for her. He grabs Ranka's hand and heads to SMS.
Klan is getting prepared. She has a plan to fight the Bajraa. Alto and Michael guards the entrance to buy Klan some time. As Klan unhooks her bra, she prods Michael about the question earlier she posed to him: "Where is your voice?" *monir was confused too, but monir didn't care because Klan was facing the camera cupping her tiny breasts with those tiny hands* Michael's half-assed response earned him a quick punch to the stomach from the loli. As he naturally leans toward the ground in compliance to the body's reaction to this particular pain, Klan kisses Michael. Klan declares to Micahel that she loves him. Michael worries more about the time, place, and circumstances. He ponders about the great sentiment, "why now." *Alas, he didn't watch enough shounen/mecha series to realize that a death-penalty has been issued to a side character for the sake of tragedy and drama. I know, I'm heartless for finding this moment amusing.*
Sheryl is with people hiding under a bunker. They don't understand why the uta-hime, (Ranka), hasn't come to their aid yet. *"An individual is smart. People are panicky and dumb." Whomever said that was a genius.* Sheryl stands up, looks at her earring, and says to herself, since Ranka is the Kibo-no-Uta-hime, she will try singing in the midst of despair. She starts singing which have the instant calming effect on the dumb-panicky people.
Three Bajraa attacks Klan's regenerating glass-cylinder. Michael goes to engage them. He gets two. The third one comes from behind and pierce him through the chest cavity. A fatal blow. The Bajraa goes to reintroduce new attacks on the cylinder. Michael reengages the Bajraa and destroys. A hole has been blasted on the ceiling which compromises the room's pressure as air escapes through it. Michael is caught in the drag and out he goes in space. The ceiling regenerates itself while Klan and Alto can only scream his name helplessly.
Sheryl continues to sing. The end.
I know, it's a bit opinionated, but it's so hard to be free of opinion. :D I also think it's about time I catch up to the current episode.
Could anyone translate Alto's speech to Sheryl (roof scene) please ?

He is indicating Sheryl is a genuine singer who does indeed care for her singing and he is dismissing her previous attempt to say she doesn't care if her singing career ends there>

Ugh. Ranka's pathetic in this episode.

OK you can tell me whatever you want about how things might have gone well if Ranka singed like always but this is if, so a supposition.
In another episode this has already happenned in the monster, when she singed Aimo without emotion like Grace said so the vajra came back. You never know what could have happenned if she singed like this in this episode( not emo but without a lot of emotion ).
Sheryl was so awesome in the shelter scene it's not even funny. Must say, this episode made me really unhappy with Ranka. Must agree with SymphonicRain about her.

I suspect that Brera will realize who he is and what a Frankenstein's monster he's been recreated into. He'll ultimately sacrifice himself to save Ranka, and possibly to allow Alto to have her, otherwise the tension between Alto and Brera wouldn't serve much purpose.
I agree with you, but not that much for Brera to die in this way.
Cathy and Ozma hiding? No way, not their style. I expect them to survive to be together, but its possible they will die together finishing off Leon and maybe Grace too... Either way, they will fight on.

i just saw the raw.
Why? Why did Michael have to die? I knew he was going to but I still wasnt prepared dammit! He was awesome when he died & he was awesome before he died & I hate that he died, it was an epic scene & combined with Sheryl's heartfelt singing managed to make me shed a few tears ( I've always been prone to tears when watching intensely emotional scenes). Klan, I feel her pain, for her to have to go through that just after finally admitting her feelings to him was just heartbreaking. It was really painful to watch. Poor Klan, at least she finally knows he loves her to, Damn thats too ironically bittersweet for my tastes. I 'm going to miss him too, Klan.
What else impressed me this ep, lets see-
Sheryl! She really was awesome in this episode and delivered the most epic lines aside from Klan & Michael I would guess. Even if I dont understand jap I can figure out what they're saying & the translations from, Ickem & other posters helped. I loved that line of hers- Ranka-chan If you are the songstress of hope, then I will sing in the midst of despair. God, She's a woman of profound feelings & the more I learn abt her, more I love & admire her! She is honestly the 1st female anime heroine I have ever related to & felt this much empathy for. Definitely my all time favourite! If she loses in this LT, (In which I'm still sincerely rooting for her) m really going to lose faith in the existence of good storytelling, Im going to be disappointed but u know what smhw Sheryl herself has really risen in priority above the LT. If Alto cant see hw amazing she is then good riddance! SHe deserves much better than a blind jackass. Even if im saying that, I really think alto isnt that blind & by the end of ep 22 or the end of the series he has got to realize her importance to him.
What else- klan & Michael were of course mindnumbingly awesome as well!I already said that I know!
Oh And I also love the conversation b/w alto & sheryl, loved hw he continued to hold on to her even when she didnt need support & proceeded on to tell her he saw through her act & that she was a genuine singer & very much real, isnt the kind to just stop singing for shallow reasons & that he knew the difference because he has performed on the stage before. Do u realize that it is the 1st time Alto has spoken abt his past on the stage without an angry/sad undertone in it? It probably doesnt mean anything but I like hw he says things he normally wouldnt when hes with sheryl. I also like that when sheryl was separated from the rest of them, he screams out her name just as luca screams out Nanase-san. He tells her he's definitely going to come back for her, sweet.
I really also felt for nanase, I agree with lone wolf, it was sad to see ranka not even try to call out her name or smthing which is in direct contrast to a scene before where nanase calls out to ranka & tries to comfort her. Though I dont think it was intentional on her part. The writers prob forgot to put it in there. Immediately after that it sounds like she's thinking hw warm altos hand is & it feels like smone elses (brera flashback). Her crying & panicking was understandable but hw she dealt with it is well still understandable, since it is ranka & she still doesnt know how to separate personal emotions with professional duty,even if it didnt feel admirable. That slap & hug by sheryl was gracefully done & with class & very much necessary to knock sm sense into ranka in her unstable state, to bring her back down to earth u could say.
Oh Ozma & Cathy were kick ass together & it was unfortunate that they stumbled into her father'dead corpse. Sad to see her cry but ozma was rte there comforting her. But damn that leon, what a huge asshole! & whats up with Brera & grace, didnt get that part?

Klan didn't say koe=voice but rather koi=love. This makes a lot more sense since she previously asked the same question "Where's your love?" to Michael at the rooftop scene @ 1:50, right after he says everyone has someone they love.

She had her world torn apart and found out she's dying, but picked herself up with some slight encouragement and helped people anyway. Ranka was on the top of the world, savior of Frontier, and saw a little scene she didn't like with her crush and became totally worthless. I don't think we are being rude to her. It's just.... past time for her to stop this nonsense. People are just frustrated.

People wanted to say he was Max, with his blue helmet & VF-25, but I called all of the parallels with Focker. Ozma may be Skull leader, but in this play, Mikhail was playing Roy's part. Pine Salad or no, you can't be a lovable good hearted skirt chasing sempai and not also be marked for death.
Heart wrenching eps. Sheryl was FINALLY at her best of the whole series. This was her redemption episode.

I don't know what to say about this ep... other than I cheered when Klan finally confessed and kissed him.... I hope Sheryl can be some sort of support for her like she helped out Sheryl in ep 19. Call me crazy but was the director trying to tell us by showing a close up of Alto holding Ranka's hand? (When he pulled her to run away and she looked down at it).
This is the ep that should prove what an awesome character Sheryl is, although we had the earlier eps, this should show the Sheryl-Haters how awesome she is. Also... did anyone's heart break at the last scene with Mik's glasses on the floor cracked with Diamond in the background? :(

Whoa, whoa whoaaa.... as much as I hate Ranka (that is NOT a typo) I don't think she is to blame for the Vaj killing Mik =/. Yes she was annoying when she didn't want to sing till Sheryl had to queen slap'er, but she did attempt to sing and I think in that scene where Grace is floating around all Tireia-like (from 00 and I never could spell his name rofl...) you see a graph behind her that shows the impact of the emotion through the song and it was veryyy low, maybe that is what caused Ranka's singing not to have an affect?
Don't mistake me as a Ranka shipper, I hate her and she annoys the crap out of me... but I don't see how the vaj killing Mik is her fault unless it was Ai-Kun, then we should burn her at the stake!
Also Alto is REALLY starting to piss me off, Mik gave him a hint that both girls likes him and he continues on with his stupid oblivious act? Ugh... and his smile for ep 21's preview doesn't sit well with me, your friend just died dude... that goes for you too Ranka. --;

Downloaded and watched just half of the episode (screwy wifi! Grrr). Uhm... Anybody know what Klan said to Michel when he attempted to placate the SherylxAltoxRanka scene on the flight roof/deck? 1st half of the episode was sweet! A definite 9 at least (was kinda hoping for an AltoxSheryl liplock before Ranka burst in, Curses! Foiled again!) Waiting on the complete episode before voting though.

I feel the same way. Either Nanase or Luca should have been the one to go. Hell, both of them.
The last thing I wanted at this stage of the story was to see Michael die.:upset::( He and Klan were to the closest to what we had of anime legends Max and Millia, and we really needed both of them alive to help cure Sheryl and knock Alto to senses.
I also thought that killing Luca could have had its significance as well with the number of top secrets things he knows, which he could have given a hint for his friends to find them out. Besides, Luca is a poor pilot anyway. Why can't he bite the dust instead of one of the aces?:frustrated: Meanwhile, killing Nanase could have thrown an ice-cold shower on Ranka right after she caught Sheryl and Alto.
This was an excellent but very very sad.:( :upset: Why Michael??? This ep. confirmed for me why Sheryl deserves Alto and why Ranka doesn't. Sheryl put the welfare of others before herself. What amazed me is how she got the people in the shelter to calm down. This ep. also showed be that Brera might not be the bad guy I thought he was. I was so sad for Klan and Cathy.:sad: I just hope Klan doesn't due anything that would get herself killed.
I can't wait for the subs to add at my collection of episodes, but I can feel that Ranka deserves the entire box of tomatoes on her for bitching and all the tantrums because she saw Alto and Sheryl together.
Through her actions in that shelter, we can see in full glory why Sheryl is a top class lady despite whatever we can say against her. That alone is more than enough to show how much Sheryl deserves Alto and why Ranka's aspirations can be thrown out of the window.
If there's someone who deserves to kill Grace with his willpower at some point, it is Brera. I hate when people are used as pawns like that and I always expect them to bite the master's hand.
I've seen many Macross episodes in my life, but never had I expected for one of my favorite characters to die in Macross since the days of Roy Focker.:(:(

And of course they'll ignore or misinterpret things to say that Alto choose to accompany Ranka during this episode rather than go with Sheryl and that Alto x Ranka being together in the end will be the key to humanity's survival against the Vajra.

So it could be plausible that the vajras destroyed were part of an older generation that has yet to gain immunity.

This episode gets a perfect 10 from me cos Michel's death makes me sob even though I saw it coming. It's still sad. Poor Klan. I don't know what to think of Ranka anymore...she just goes down so low in this episode. It sucks to be her. Sheryl gets her chance to shine again and Diamond Crevasse is such a fitting song with all the drama that's going on.

I bet the Ranka shippers will be seething about "how dare that bitch Sheryl slap our beloved Ranka?!" and they'll try to justify her selfish self-absorption by saying that it's because her love for Alto is "pure and she had been betrayed, so how can you blame her for being emotional?".
And of course they'll ignore or misinterpret things to say that Alto choose to accompany Ranka during this episode rather than go with Sheryl and that Alto x Ranka being together in the end will be the key to humanity's survival against the Vajra.

Can't compare apples to oranges. Different Anime, different situation, different context.
Lulu is a leader of many and must make decisions, right or wrong. Never said he is without sins and neither did he. Most things are out of his control, but he always take the situation and deals with it. For good or bad, his character also grows with each decision.
Ranka can do something, but instead runs away from it, and even at the end of this ep, she still doesn't get it. What? Alto hugs Sheryl and now she wants to die? So it's the end of the world for her and everyone else too? Her slow growth has been a sorce of annoyance all along and it's the final draw when it costed us a favored supporting male character.
And it's actually the Sheryll fans/Ranka haters who are filling the threads with posts of ranting and whining and raging against her. I hope somebody will take the time to debate and try to answer the question with insightful thoughts. One thing for sure, secondary characters you kill must have an impact on the story. In that sense, I thought killing Luca could have made sense since he knows a little too much and leaving all secrets to Alto and co. could have been the Pandora Box which Leon and Grace wouldn't like to open for other than themselves.
Some might say that killing Nanase would have been useless. But, I'd rather believe that it could have brought Ranka into a "journey to hell" in order to see what she's made of... if some people believe in her to rise up. Sheryl had her own "journey to hell" (a downfall, for those who ask what I mean) until she came up rising from her ashes.

As much as I don't like Mikhail dying, it was used to speed up Alto's decision making process. It's to communicate to Alto that he needs to seize the day and confess to the one he trully loves, because you can die any time.

I agree, mostly cuz I don't like Nanase. Ranka's wake up call has got to be something from her past, since it's been hinting at it all along. When she was holding Alto's hand, she thought of her oni-chan. May be this eludes to Ranka seeing Alto as a replacement for her real brother. Ozma is a bit too old to play that part.

I make no effort to defend Ranka because there will be no end to that debate (as is because of my actual point), but my point is how the Ranka-haters are out of control and being ridiculous. How do you know people don't blame him? No need for me to blame him, he already blames himself. Let's not have Lulu invade this forum as well. But whatever decision he makes, he takes reponsibility for them. Ranka on the other hand fails to be responsible for her decision to be the songstress of hope. He ditches her fans at the parade and realizes she doesn't sing for them, but for Alto. She also fails again in 20, but I can sympathize with her situation. That doesn't erase the fact that many loved ones died because of it. She needs to see in full scope the consequences of her action, or lack there of.

I get the need for Michel to die in regards to story however there were better ways to serve the story. You mentioned both Luca or Nanase as alternatives. What about both of them? For instance instead of being injured Nanase is killed by the explosion in front of or possibly in Luca's arms. This serves as motivation for him and as well as a much needed Ranka catalyst. Later during the base fight Michel still charges to defend Klan however when blindsided by the Vajra Luca takes the hit. This gives the opportunity for the deathbed confession, i.e. giving a password to a computer with Vajra data, and allowing Luca to make up for any perceived wrongdoing by allying with Leon. This scenario serves to provide character growth for nearly every main character as well as advancing the overall plot.

Y'all keep yelling at Ranka for not singing... but the problem is that a) Sheryl's a pro and will keep singing because it's her job - which is why she sang even as SMS went off to kick Vajra back in Ep 7 and after her mini-breakdown on stage (and Ranka, despite Grace's efforts, is definitely not a professional yet in any sense of the word), and b) Ranka needs to grow fucking UP as Sheryl has already started to do. Sheryl's had character development time, Alto's had character past exposition time, Ozma and Cathy got it... and Ranka's just sitting there, making no progress on any front save that which is forced on her by Grace and company.
At least the pineapple salads we ordered an episode or so back got delivered, but if Cathy and Ozma stick around they're going to get charged with murder and executed before being able to discover Leon's involvement (and more importantly, evidence). Time to get back to the Quarter, pronto. And at least Klan and Mikhail made some progress, even if the latter had to bite the salad a few moments later. Hopefully, Mikhail biting it and Klein's pain will get Alto thinking that he REALLY needs to get over his ego and start deciding whether he likes either girl - and more importantly, to act on it. Maybe Ranka will take this death as an excuse to, y'know... get a backbone and finally confess, if she wants Alto-kun as much as she says she does. Since he's a pilot and could die anytime, just like Mikhail did.

I still support Ranka finally realizing that she needs to stop singing at the end. Ranka I believe is some1 who needs the protection of a man. Ex. Her brother protected her, Alto, and Brera. She can't seem to function properly if none of them are around.

What? The fact that they're both human beings, regardless of whether they're in different shows, isn't reason to compare them? Viewers didn't blame Lelouch for doing something bad while Ranka gets the gallows for something she didn't intend to do. That just goes to show how biased the haters are against Ranka.

You are being a nit. There are lots of people blaming Lelouch for what he did, and there a lot of people blaming Ranka now, too. Sure, it was less intentional than Lelouch, but it still got tons of people killed, including her friend Michael. Nanase got very hurt ( and she is by far the closest friend Ranka has ) and Ranka barely batted an eye, because she was soooo shocked over Alto not-even-really hugging Sheryl.
Mikhail died to protect Klan, more like. And as noted earlier... Ranka's not a professional, but a spoiled child. Time to grow up, girl.
At least we won't get a Max/Millia redux with Mikhail and Klein now. Of course, Alto'll still probably be emo instead of finally choosing a girl since he won't live forever (as if the example of his mother wasn't enough). Now will Alto try to help Klein too, or will he be too self-centered (a la Ranka) to think about it? She helped him once with Mikhail, after all.
I also want to see what if any Alto and Klan development there is. If he tries help or console her it could be the beginning of an interesting friendship. They could both gain something beneficial out of it.

But I can see how the remaining episodes will focus on the main plot of vajra, in which obviously Ranka plays a bigger role than Sheryl. Hence the next few episodes would focus on Ranka more than Sheryl (apart from 22). Probably about how she "fell" and needs to "get back up" again.
Then probably Kawamori would give us a lot of fake hints about Alto x Ranka. Then when the whole Vajra threat is over. They rebuild the fleet, and probably the galaxy fleet as well. Sheryl is about to leave, and Alto finally realizes his feelings and confess. They get togehter, hence the surprise, because we're going to see a lot of Ranka in the near future.
And I hope they bump into Basara in the end :D

I'm hoping they end the series with the All That VF airshow celebration after finding the Megaroad, with familiar aged faces from all the series flying in and showing up in the crowd.
I like the "SDF Macross began with an airshow, and comes full circle again with one." symmetry.

I'm not even going to comment on the number of people in this thread that can't look beyond a hand grab and a slap. So much more to this episode and you fixate on those two things. You know who you are. Even by not understanding half of what was said due to my poor Japanese I can tell that she was in shock and wasn't exactly thinking right. I would have thought the lack of any emotion from a girl that is usually filled with emotion and the blank stare would have been a clue. Alo the biggest reason for her to sing and motivated her to sing that she had convinced herself of just went out the window in her mind. Give the poor character a little benefit of the doubt. Pure Ranka hatred is as bad as Pure Ranka love.
On that note Sheryl rose to the top and certainly came out as a shining star amidst the darkness of the battle. I certainly enjoyed the character in this episode and my appreciate for the character has grown because of it. Not going into shock was expected I think from Sheryl but not even getting sick once, was rather convenient I thought. Must have been the adrenaline. Staying with Nananse and singing at the end was superb. The song was also an extremely moving song coupled with the scenes that were shown. Even the pause was amazing when Michael died. Oh and the one last tear from Sheryl was also moving.
So much tragedy and loss in this episode though epic in it's many elements. Significants step in the love triangle, more depth to the characters, drama that pulled on our heart strings, death of one major character and one minor character, poor Cathy losing her father, poor Klan for losing her love and poor Alto for losing his best friend. Plus awesome battle scenes and great animation once again not to mention superb use of music elements.
I gave this one easily a 10 outta 10.
I will give this thread another read once the emotions have run their course and intelligent discussion has a chance to rise to the top once again.

Characters like Lelouch Lamperouge intentionally blow up kids and other unarmed people out of simple rage and blind vengeance and get a pass from the anime fandom. Ranka inadvertently and accidentally sets the Vajra on a rampage and gets to "Burn in Hell!"
A comparison like that makes absolutely no sense. Lelouch is a complicated anti-hero, Ranka is a little loli moe heroine. Not to mention the anime themselves are very different. No one is CG is a "good" character. They are all rather messed up in one way or another. But I'm not going to get into an argument about Lelouch here. There is a whole thread dedicated to Lelouch in the CG forum. :rolleyes:
Besides the reason I'm disliking Ranka this episode is not even because she inadvertently set the Vajra on people. It's because she is dependent on Alto to a ridiculous degree and I can't stand it anymore. I thought she was on the verge of maturing as a character after ep. 12, but she has taken some huge steps backwards these past few episodes. "I want to die?" Because she sees her crush with another girl? Sorry, no...I can't sympathize here.
But I can't see Kawamori keeping her like this. So hopefully she'll get a wakeup call and get back to growing as a character very soon.
Actually, they can be compared. Because while one human inentionally does somethign bad he gets a pass, while another human being does something bad on complete accident and gets buried for it. We're talking about human reactions here. Humans can be compared.
Lelouch is an anti-hero. I expect him to do messed up things. It's part of his charm for me. But hey, I also loved Yagami Light. Again, with Ranka it's not even the vajra thing that bothers me. Hell, if she went all bad ass and took control of the vajra that would probably be a nice change. I just want Ranka to grow up. We're 20 episodes in already afterall...

Both mention the Protoculture.
Grace's faction achieving something that the Protoculture could not do.
Bilrer is more on bringing the children of the Protoculture together.

The way Michel died is somewhat parallel to that of Fokker: taking on three Vajra (Fokker went against three Queadluuns in SDFM, IIRC) then fighting while mortally wounded (in DYRL, Fokker also did a pointblank pwnage). Powerful scenes.

OK so im hella pissed WTF you kill off Michale but you leave Luca and Nanase alive what kind of BS is that. Luca is uselss in a fight once his drones get shot down and now our favorite sniper is gone. Poor Klan but now that hes gone her death flags are waving like crazy she is going to want revenge and in the process probably get killed and the annoying characters will still live to the end. I directly blame Ranka for Michales death.
Sheryls slap was epic i mean that was a she bitch pimp slap and her performance in the shelter was mind altering. I think she might have found her new place in the Universe. Im truly hoping that Alto does not end up with Ranka in the end Sheryl all the way.

Am I the first one to speculate Michael might not be dead, ...... yet.? Yes, he was impaled by gigantic stinger that most likely have severed his spinal chord when the stinger went through the back. Then it ripped through the heart and the lungs which caused a massive internal bleeding. Oh and then, the stinger protrudes through the rib cage and comes out.

Now, the space can help him out actually, as ridiculous as it sounds. He is got few more seconds now that the cold will stop the bleeding which leaves some room for a rescue. The rescue should come from the outside. Those fighter drones should be on it's way to engage the Bajraa. Possibilities? Yes?

Klan didn't say koe=voice but rather koi=love. This makes a lot more sense since she previously asked the same question "Where's your love?" to Michael at the rooftop scene @ 1:50, right after he says everyone has someone they love.
That makes much more sense! I've already deleted the RAW, but I can always re-download. I'm so used to hear the pronunciation with the "oi-ee" sound that the "o-eh" sound totally made me discount the possibility.
