Reading your post confirms one thing. You are obviously new to the Macross franchise. Not that we have anything personal against your opinions, but that is how Macross is set up. You will find Macross to be a different animal compared to other mecha franchises, such as Gundam. Macross tend to focus on the normal human qualities of characters, that is why you will never find super aces in the likes of Gundam (although occasionally you have psychos such as Basara...), and that is why you will never find super mecha units capable of taking out xx enemies in xx seconds.

So unfortunately, in response to your statement:

It was just a rumor that was speculated about since (to quote) "the producer said at some point he'll make up his mind and things will progress from there."

I'm talking about what will most likely happen. But yo do not think like me right ?
Alto will share more time whith Sheryl in the next episode and maybe they will show us some proof in a possible Sheryl and alto ending( Like a kiss or something which include not a repulsive reaction from alto).
If they do it you agree with me that the Alto and Ranka pair is dead and buried, no ?
But there is also the main plot with the vajra and Brera.
No one but Grace knows about his identity... After what happenned in this episode they can't let her be like that , they're aware that she give off repel, disdain not only because of her body but also because of her character which they know it, is caught like an immature one who only thing about alto.
Moreover when everybody will think Ranka is no more than a sister for alto because Sheryl made her move and they're( for sheryl fan) the perfect couple.... Brera will step in Ranka's life (vajra, relationship..). You expect Alto to do nothing ?
They clearly said alto will have to react when he will find out about Brera.
But what does it have to be with him if her brother is still alive ? Brera is her bodyguard, why making alto acts to protect Ranka? What about sheryl?
Would you not find it surprising that Alto comes back to protect her even thought they showed us he will not let Sheryl....

I guess in short, Seifall is trying to say that - this episode is full of pure win for Sheryl's fans... as expected by him ... but... because when Brera is the "other factor" that Alto still has no knowledge of... and when Alto learns abt Brera's true identity and motive, he might move to Ranka's side instead (Alto X Ranka) as Seifall's speculation... and that will be "surprising" since today's episode is full of Alto X Sheryl (hence setting us a trap to be thinking in this direction).

Sheryl didn't confess her feelings at all. :o This entire scene shows Alto how much he cares about her, and how her walls came crumbling down as she sank into the embrace of her friend. The entire scene was giving me vibes that Sheryl was resigned to her fate and what she thinks is "unrequited love". It makes me think that she would carry her love to her grave, and be content with the time she's spending with Alto without ever telling him that she loves him.

It's times like this when I just want to smack both of them. But what a set-up indeed. ;) And to think this wasn't even the pinnacle of H.M.S Skull Fairy.

(Hmm, I think it's time to elaborate in the love triangle topic. :heh: )

Is it just me or did anyone else think the triangle will get even more overwrought in the next few episodes before it finally settles down. I mean, judging from past experiences, I don't think this is the end of the triangle at all.

Although I'm rooting for Sheryl x Alto, the idea that the producer is playing with our mind by putting Alto x Ranka together at the end is still nagging at the back of my mind. If Ranka is the lead role in this anime, I'm not so sure that Sheryl x Alto will stand especially when Alto's feeling is yet to be revealed without a doubt. Sofar, I don't think much evidence has been provided in that regard. So Sheryl fans don't get your hopes up too high, although we could keeping for a Sheryl x Alto ending, and hopefully the producer will get our message and produce and ending to our hearts' content.

Big irony time - as Sheryl's disease spreads throughout the body, she's able to cause small fold distortions - not as strong as Ranka's though. Meanwhile, Sheryl is singing charity concerts (people comment that her songs have changed) and Klan spills all the details about Sheryl to Alto because she doesn't want him to end up like her (and Michael).

Surprisingly, it's more like Alto that makes a move on Sheryl than the other way around. Very moving scene with Sheryl finally putting down the act and crying in front of Alto. Almost made me cry, which is very rare. Alto promises to stay with Sheryl until the end! Sheryl asks for Alto to give her the courage to sing to the end. Ahh, so bitter-sweet.


Meanwhile, most of SMS goes "pirate" :D

Seems (since he doesn't explain) that Alto was a bit too much of an outsider to simply go along with SMS. Alto thinks Ozma isn't being very mature to do a runner to help protect Cathy, but Ozma says it's because he's a man :heh: Some rather fun dialogue here. Ozma challenges Alto to chose his own path, like Ranka and he did. Looks like Ozma and Alto are about equal in skill here (though obviously their mecha aren't).


Next time - major revaluations about Vajra and decision time for Alto?

I think the narrative is pretty set for the last three episodes. Next episode should confession time for both of them, episode 24 is a fake-out, when Ranka gets back and Sheryl appears to be about to die and in episode 25 Ranka saves Sheryl via whatever-makes-her-immune-to-her-own-V-Type-disease magic, therefore letting go of Alto and transforming into a mature woman.

Sheryl gets Alto, Ranka gets maturity. All is well.

The spoilers look more like Alto is mad enough to want to kill Ranka (like Luca is right now). Sure, he'll come to her point of view at some point, but that has nothing to do with the romance.

Just because Sheryl might not be with Alto at the end for any number of reasons, doesn't mean Ranka will by default for no good reason. This isn't some zero-sum game.

I feel that Sheryl will definitely not let Alto be around her only for pity ( if that is his motivation... I doubt that is the most relevant part of his feelings for her ), so I´m looking forward to what happens next week.

BTW... there was a very, very brief shot of some sort of Vajra - blood smeared Valkyrie during the conversation of Sheryl, Luca and Leon... can anybody make sense of why that shot was included?

The hug scene between Alto and Sheryl is all about walls crumbling down and unresolved feelings. There were so many revelations and misunderstandings that came out of this one little scene itself. There is so much pain in Sheryl's declaration to sing, because she feels that singing is all she has left; it is all she could live for in her days to come. She believes she had no future with Alto, she believes that her love for Alto is unrequited, and I won't be surprised if she keeps her love a secret from Alto and carry it to her grave without Alto ever knowing how she feels about him.

Does Alto realize why she's so determined to sing?

Just as Alto failed to understand Ranka, he failed to understand Sheryl's heart, though in no fault of his own. It is a heart-wrenching scene for Alto too, because he sees that she's fighting with him for her singing; he just didn't know that she had no choice. He has no idea that she loved him, he didn't know that she intends to sing for the rest of her life because she believed she had no future with Alto, he probably didn't even know how much he meant to her to the point where she could place himself first before her, seeing how he led the topic away when she was beginning to talk about the issue.

It was only after Alto saw her desperate for her singing, that, after a moment of pain, he hugs her and promised to stay by her side and support her as she sings. But by doing so, Alto has chosen to take a passive stance on Sheryl's death issue, he remains idle by the sidelines, pretty much resigning himself to supporting Sheryl on what he thinks is Sheryl's true wish, until her death. He has no idea that she was singing Northern Cross at her most painful moments.

Ozma's conversation with Alto in the end is a move that urges Alto to find his way and be resolute in it, just as Ranka had done when she flew with Brera to space, as the flashbacks indicated. Is Alto going to stand there and watch Sheryl sing until she dies? Or will he fight for her by fighting against her wishes? Will he allow her to slip away from him like what he's doing now?

Emotional barriers were torn down, but at the same time, Alto has no idea Sheryl is in love with him, and Sheryl is more or less content with Alto's presence near her as she sings to her death. But you could also see that Sheryl is at the peak of despair, and you have to truly wonder if Alto is really there for her, or how much Sheryl is allowing Alto to be. Look at the very nature of Northern Cross and the reason she sings this song.

I guess in short, Seifall is trying to say that - this episode is full of pure win for Sheryl's fans... as expected by him ... but... because when Brera is the "other factor" that Alto still has no knowledge of... and when Alto learns abt Brera's true identity and motive, he might move to Ranka's side instead (Alto X Ranka) as Seifall's speculation... and that will be "surprising" since today's episode is full of Alto X Sheryl (hence setting us a trap to be thinking in this direction).


If Alto did that he would win the asshole of the year award. He already told Sheryl he was there for her and would stay by her side until the end. God knows I don't think much of Alto, but he is not the type to go back on his word. Of course, that could be kind of ominous and be foreshadowing her death. But if that happens it's not exactly good for Ranka fans either. It makes her the consolation prize. If he even chooses to be with her that is. Because even if Sheryl dies that doesn't mean Ranka automatically wins.

As for the Brera thing, do be honest I don't see that they even have much time for that. He'll react and get over it quickly. From the looks of things Frontier will not be anywhere near Ranka until the end of ep 24 or ep. 25.

I've always been the pessimist and thought it would be a RankaxAlto end, but this ep does give me some hope. However, I'm still wary. To me ep 21 just shouts RankaxAlto end. I'm afraid they might make SherylxAlto and then kill her off and throw RankaxAlto together. :mad:

I hope something works out and she gets cured. Because I want at least ONE of the two couples I've been shipping lately to win. Cause I don't think Kalulu is going to work out in the end. So SherylXAlto must win!

I just saw the raw, If thats pity I'll eat my hat. I cried , that was the most powerful scene ever, so much emotion shown by alto & sheryl, even if I didnt understand a single word they said, it moved me to tears. I refuse to believe alto's not in love with Sheryl after that, I cant see him going back to ranka, I just cant, not after that. I loved alto's show of emotion, his voice, eyes, the hug, everything. The Sheryl/Alto scene was beautiful, but I agree with what others have said in that it's not all entirely clear whether it's Sheryl and Alto are a done deal. Has Alto really connected with Sheryl on the emotional level as a significant other or is he moved by empathy to her tragic predicament? Perhaps it's a mixture of both, but it's still ambiguous.

I'm curious though, as to what path Alto will ultimately take, after Ozma posed that question during their duel. Has he already decided to stay back on Frontier in order to protect Sheryl? Many decisions are practically made by circumstances--Alto missed his chance when he had to stay by Sheryl's side. By the end of the episode though, he is extremely frustrated with everything that has happened. How the story then turns out, I think, will largely depend on Alto's choices in the final episodes as the last scenes seem to hint.

Just like those Galaxy entities, I was elated when the Vajra planet was revealed. Never has the prospects of seeing massive Itano circuses and dogfights in a real sky been so good (frankly, no Macross series would be complete without a real atmospheric battle).

That said, dunno if it's only me but I did have the impression that the main reason why Alto didn't go with SMS was to be with Sheryl. Besides he had just finished telling Sheryl that he would be with her till the end and running away with Ozma right after would've been a bit ridiculous ^^;

The last part of the episode felt weird though cause Ozma & co are clearly depicted as the "good guys" (quite obviously since we know what Leon has been scheming), but then what's the role of Alto, Sheryl and Luca right now? the director said that he is going to choose one, what has happened so far doesn't seem like he has made a choice. Osma's word also indicate that he has to decide what he wants to do.
Being an outside observer and not rooting for either of the two girls I think Sheryl has the upper hand, even though he knowing she is dying make it look like pity.

I think it's time to stop being so dependent on the "Surprise Ending" remark by Kawamori, which is what all your previous arguments are dependent on. I am very welcome to this surprise ending Kawamori is talking about, but I'm sure he can tell the difference between a surprise ending and an inconsistent ending. As musouka has put it eloquently, the stage has been set for an Alto x Sheryl ending, and no matter how much violent or shaky the journey is, it will not change the final destination point the series has been leaning towards. Of course, there is always a chance Alto x Ranka could happen, and I'm sure most, if not all, would call it cheap and inconsistent ending. But I've seen a sufficient number of Kawamori's works to have enough faith in this man for him to see what he's doing and manage his hold on the series firmly and neatly. :)

I must admit though that I H-A-T-E being left on a cliffhanger at the end of an episode.

In sports terms, I was hoping this episode to be a late stunning go-ahead goal for Sheryl fans meaning at the same time that Ranka fans would be completely stunned right now with almost no hope of seeing their character win Alto's affections by any means. All I wished was the story to be in a position in which we're about to put the final nail to the coffin of any Alto x Ranka possibility. BUT with Sheryl's health getting worse, we still can't close it yet... and that is pissing me off.

I don't think that Alto and Luca's choice staying with Frontier is bad decision. Ozma said that he do it for the women he love (Cathy and Ranka) and I think Alto and Luca are the same. Ozma and Cathy saw Leon killed President Glass and they hate Leon. The same for Alto, Luca and Klan, they saw Micheal's painful death, can you forgive something killed your precious friend and your beloved person that easy? Micheal died, Nanase condition isn't good, I can understand Luca's decision to defeat the Varja and I don't think that he is a tool, Luca chooses to work with Leon. If he bring her with the Macross Quarter fleet, can they cure her? I don't think SMS medical team is as good as Frontier's hospital. And if he leaves behind her with Frontier, he will regret for leaving the one he love and even lives a painful life blaming himself if Frontier is destroyed by Varja. As the main characters are staying with Frontier side, I believe in Frontier. They choose Frontier people's pain instead of Varja's pain.

If Sheryl die at the end of the series, I only can accept RankaxAlto ending only if few years later, Ranka grew up and stop act like a spoiled kid and Alto's wound for losing Sheryl healed a bit. So if they can meet and understand each other, it's time for them to be together.

I agree, that's one of the realistic approaches to a Ranka x Alto end, if they ever decide to let Sheryl go.

On the other hand, they could do something like this:

Alto going back to Kabuki-acting, but also taking care of a handicapped Sheryl on a wheelchair: virus infection gotten so bad that it has already affected her brain and that she doesn't remember anything anymore and cannot even speak or sing. Together they spend Sheryl's remaining days peacefully. A bittersweet ending.

I've always thought people putting weight on the suprise comment to be ridiculous. It's a love triangle, the ending was bound to be a surprise anyway since both ships think they have it in the bag, not to mention alto's VA had no choice but to be diplomatic & state its gonna be a surprise since he cant very well give away the ending!

As for why they made alto find out abt her dying before he confesses to her, Isnt it obvious ? Its to keep us doubting & guessing! Otherwise it would've been a sure win for sheryl/alto, not that I think its any different now if they plan on keeping the show consistant.

Yes, there is a nagging feeling that alto/ranka ending might happen but that's all it is, a feeling with no strong basis because the story so far doesnt strongly support it. Also, it just means kawamori has achieved his evil goal of wanting to keep his viewers hanging.

I admit I initially disliked the thought of alto finding out abt her dying before the big confession but I still loved how they portrayed the scene. What I loved abt it was that the scene did not reek of pity at all, it was all raw emotion from both, especially alto.

In that moment I felt like he was only thinking of her & all the pain she'd been through pretending to be strong for the sake of others, for his sake. It wasnt the right time for a confession because he was concentrating on her pain. That is why, the first thing he asks her to do is to stop already, stop pretending, stop putting yourself through so much pain. You dont have to force youself to smile anymore, you dont have to sing anymore if it hurts you to do so. ( I actually find it vey ironic, that these are the very words he should have told ranka, if he had been in love with her, but he doesnt, not that it means anything, just an observation)

Sheryl protests strongly against not singing, because singing is her life, proof that she's lived, so he puts aside his own needs/feelings on the matter, hugs her & tells her that if it is her intent to keep on singing, then he will comply with her wishes until the last moment. You can see the brief moment of pain in his eyes before he hugs her. I dont know abt you but I saw this as an unspoken promise on his part to stay by her side forever & also of his love. He is letting her live her last moments the way she wants to. He is putting her above his own needs.

Like crisis said in her post( in the romance thread), he doesnt understand her heart just like he didnt understand ranka in ep 21, but the difference I found was that he put Sheryl's needs first & tries to comply to what he believes is her wish.

The important thing to note is that though the walls around their heart have crumbled , there are still unresolved feelings & misunderstandings b/w them as I dont think Sheryl knows alto loves her yet. ( Yes, as of now, I do believe its mutual) Which is the huge problem here, she seems resigned to her fate. And honestly, I'm not too sure that was a kiss at the end. As much as I want that, I'm going to need real confirmation that it was a kiss. Hopefully, the next ep delivers it.

Then there's his childhood nightmare of his mother's illness and death, Alto really had every reason to tell her to stop.

The difference really is that he backed off. With Ranka, despite her agony, he kept telling her to sing. Sheryl's original situation here probably doesn't count seeing as to Alto it would probably have seemed like a pop idol tantrum, but Ranka cried. She practically claimed to want to die, yet he asked her anyway. The fact that he could put away all his personal reasons in the end, namely his trauma over losing yet another loved one, and his guilt over getting Sheryl to choose this path, and finally his wish that she would be safe, just to let Sheryl do what she feels is the purpose of her state of living says a lot to me >__< I liked him so much this episode.

Alto x Sheryl ftw! I want to see this episode so badly now ~

Well… Although I am really happy for Alto and Sheryl moment, the fact that they still have to confess is really bothering me.
We all know that in most anime, love is portrayed on a different way than in western movies/series. While the second value more physical contact, showing the couple kissing, making love and all. The first tends to focus more on portraying character feelings through their mutual understanding, and little by little, we can see in their actions some sparks of love, to finally express it physically with words.

The main couple of “Lamune” never kissed on the whole series, but since the first episode, we can already assure that they are in love, because they knew how to deal with each other, they are always together enjoying themselves. We can see in apparently mundane events how much their care for each other, like when the guy always helped the girl to harvest vegetables.

But in Macross Frontier, we are dealing with a love triangle. Though Alto x Sheryl seems pretty obvious now, to ensure the end of the triangle we need a more explicit resolution, like Alto confessing or accepting Sheryl feelings, their love must be shown physically to properly express to the audience who won the triangle.
Yes, they kissed and all, but it was not explicitly shown right? The pessimist inside of me is saying that Ranka still has a chance. Though a "Ranka x Alto" ending probably will be one of the worst plot twists in anime history, and I will bash Kawamori until the end of his days. :heh:

The last part of the episode felt weird though cause Ozma & co are clearly depicted as the "good guys" (quite obviously since we know what Leon has been scheming), but then what's the role of Alto, Sheryl and Luca right now? Allies of the bad guy without knowing that he's a bad guy maybe? I wish they showed what was that Ozma sent to everyone in SMS D:

Looking at the HD Raw, they clearly kissed... why they didn´t show it in a close-up is anyones guess.

As for the message from SMS, Alto didn´t even look at it when it came in, he immediately switched off his phone.

Been thinking about that. When I first saw it, I thought to myself that bastard wants Alto to be his brother-in-law in Vajra land. But Ozma is suppose to be the wise one, so may be he meant something else. Then I remembered he asked Alto what he was killing for, and in the hospital he asked Alto what he was fighting to protect. So I believe that Alto's path is still to protect his beloved sky and the people he loves who lives under it, but killing the Vajra in it is perhaps not the best method. I think it was more to facilitate the peaceful ending with the Vajra than trying to hint at the love triangle.

On the topic of Alto x Sheryl, the scene with them left me wanting more. I believe Alto's feelings for Sheryl are real, and they are more of love than of pity. He would have probably confessed had Sheryl not told him that singing is her only reason to continue. Hearing her decision, he decided to support it, even though he didn't like it. He knows that she loves him, but singing until she dies is more important to her than he is to her. So he clamped down on his confession. And Sheryl would have confessed, if she didn't think Alto is only with her out of pity. They are still misunderstanding each other, which is pretty bitter sweet (and annoying k-drama like). But that will make the finale all the better when the finally shed off their skin and takes each other in their arms.

If there was an episode where everything should have been solved on love issues to seal everything (and throw the key), it should have been this one. I don't think there could be a more perfect moment than this one to confess everything and all out. I am saying that because the most important matter is coming ahead: battling Grace, Leon's dictatorship or vicious Vajra. It would have been better to finish with one issue before focusing to the biggest one.

That's why I hate when things go down to the wire.

The singer who inspired Sheryl was most definitely Mylene. I don't think she was Enika (Macross 7 Trash) or Passero (Macross Generation) or one of the Milky Dolls (Macross VF-X).

I think the Macross 7 ending (with OVA) indicated more of a Basara x Gamlin ending. :heh:

Cheese's analysis of that scene in Ep 22 is I think fairly accurate. I also believe that Alto really doesn't have a clue as to how to comprehend women's feelings towards him. You've based all your prior arguments about AxR based on pretty much one episode of the entire series. While Sheryl and Alto had been on a marathon, Ranka and Alto have yet to even begin a stroll in the park!


Now that they made Alto finding out about sheryl's illness before choosing the girl... this is pretty obvious Alto and sheryl will not happen.

I think you are not only misunderstanding Sheryl's intention for withholding her illness but you are also completely missing the point.

Sheryl pushed Alto away previously because she had a disease which the best of human technology could not cure. She did not want him to be burdened with her. That was her love for him, her own selfless love for Alto.

When Alto knew about Sheryl's illness, everything clicked for him. He may be dense, but not that dense. Learning of Sheryl's illness allowed Alto to finally realize what Sheryl had actually done, emotionally, for him.

In contrast, what was Ranka's sign of affection? Calling Alto at 3am in the morning to fold airplanes, then suddenly summoned her Vajra and Cyborg bodyguards to threaten Alto's life while confusing the crap out of him at the same time. You call that love? Seriously, if you think that is love, then I begin to wonder about your concept of hate.

Giving us a AxR ending would be the most inconsistent conclusion in Macross, if not anime history. By forcing an AxR ending, the series would have completely destroyed any support (from Klan and Mike) that had been placed upon Alto's understanding of Sheryl and their eventual companionship.

Never mind that you'd destroy the fandom that way.

This is like Digimon all over again for me o.0 Even though it wasn't a romance anime, there were LOTS of hints to Sorato (Sora x Yamato/Matt) but the Taiora fans (Tai x Sora) kept saying there was nothing between them and just because it looks like Sora was more gentle with Tai that she would end up with him. (c'mon... Matt's crest was Friendship and Sora's was love, put 2 and 2 together...)

Then in season 2 came along and who ended up with whom? Yamato and Sora ended up together and to throw salt on the wound, they had 2 kids at the end of Digimon Season 2.

So this is why I am rooting for Sheryl x Alto, beat the cliches man!
