Yes, probably many of you are confused by the storyline of the whole .Hack Project.
The project entitled .Hack is a long one, as well as very confusing if not viewed properly. Below I took the time to list an 'unofficial' guide in which you should watch/read/play project .Hack
Follow this list and you should understand things to a clear enough point.
Note:. I've used 'Project .Hack' instead of calling it a series since it also includes books, games and manga.
First a timeline...
End of the 20th Century The US Department of Defense developed the ARPANET, which became the basis of the global communication network we now know as the Internet.
By 1999, almost everyone across the world had access.
Beginning of the 21st Century As the internet became popular, secret government information became harder to conceal and easier to obtain. The independent communist nations and the militant nations of Middle East attempts a series of political and social changes, five years after the beginning of the 21st century. Meanwhile, hackers continued to attack networks causing communication troubles and increasing the rate of cyber crime.
2002.10 The United Nations subsystem; the network council of the world, also known as the WNC was created. It was required for all the nations that use the internet to participate.
2003.1 The "WNC Winter Meeting" was held. It becomes a general meeting that reveals WNC limitations of power and effect.
2003.4 A new virus called "Hello, WNC" affected the world globally. An e-mail software company, M Corporation, with a market share of 70%, becomes the primary victim of the virus. The damage the virus affects up to ten million users throughout the entire world.
2003.7 The "WNC Summer Meeting" was held, mainly discussing the "Hello, WNC" virus. Pointless theories arise from the public concerning the actual ability of the WNC, unable to deal with problems like this.
2003.12 "Deadly Flash", a new virus appeared. 7 names of deceased humans are revealed. First capital punishment was decided upon the Japanese youth who implemented the virus.
2004.4 The "WNC Spring Meeting" was held. The introduction of the "New Century HyperNet Plan" is proposed by Japan, Germany and Italy. However, the U.S.A. and China oppose the idea and thought it was a waste of time. In result, only the bill of "Investigation and Research of New Viruses", "Technical Security Development Aid" and "Strengthening Reinforced Penal Regulations of Net Crime" and others comes into effect by vote.
2004.8 The Swiss Bank's main computer was hacked, losing 10 trillion and more in Japanese yen. The terrorist organization was also known since the 20th century actively committing crime without being caught.
2005.1 New York Stock Market prices repeatedly jumped. It was discovered that the stock exchange of Wall Street and the main computer of a major company were hacked, after the criminal announced their crime. The criminal has yet to be arrested.
2005 spring ~ fall The outbreak of cyber crime countinued on. "Security Development Support" and "Internet Crime Eradication" slogans promoted by WNC begin to lose its effect on the general public.
2005.12 "The Pluto Kiss" incident occurs.
On December 24th, the entire internet stopped functioning. Simultaneously, all networked computers and communcation control systems crashed, causing great panic and confusion. The network was able to recover 77 minutes later. The automatic retaliatory system of the United States began to operate erroneously and was moving to a point of crisis. The virus creator was a mere 10-year-old elementary school student.
2006.1 The United States of America's 44th president Jim Stonecold took the responsibility of the "Pluto Kiss" upon himself and resigned from office. The "WNC Winter Meeting" was held. In the year 2004, when the "New Century Cybernet Structure" re-surfaced to the public, they introduced the "ALTIMIT" OS. It was able to escape the damages done by the "Pluto Kiss". Thus, became the world's most commonly used operating system.
2006 Summer The duty of working on the "ALTIMIT" OS was to show individual accomplishment. However, because of this, the central development staff of ALTIMIT resigned their job. CyberConnect Corporation (CC Corporation) takes over. They became the foundation of "The World". Harold Hewick, a German, which he claimed himself to be, sold "The Fragment" to CC Corp.
2007.1 The ALTIMIT OS continued on into the next generation Network Systems as it spread across the world. The ALTIMIT Corporation (head office in San Francisco) established 12 overseas affiliation firms globally.
2007.5 ALTIMIT's corresponding network game "Fragment" began test play. "Pluto Kiss" caused the placement of a restriction on Networked Entertainment. However within a devastating state for entertainment market revival, the WNC removes the restrictions placed on it.
2007.7 "The Fragment" became the most popular topic within conversations between network game users. As for the prototype of "The Fragment" viewed by the public, rumors spread by a semi-maniac claim for the existence of "The Twilight Tombstone". The CC Corporation attends an International Securities Market Stock Presentation.
2007.10 By October 31st, WNC announced that all of the world's computers switched to ALTIMIT OS. At the same time, all restrictions regarding network use on the morning of December 24th 0 o'clock be removed, as formally announced in the past (The Network Peace Declaration). The United Nations named "The Mother Mary's Kiss" an international holiday on that day. On the same day, in a press conference, the CC Corporation announced the release of "The Fragment" in a big RPG "The World". The date of the release to the public was to be simultaneously on the same day at the same time.
2007.11 beginning of the month "The World" pre-orders were accepted. Within the start of the first hour, more than 100 ten thousand orders were received. The CC Corporation total sales, in stock, exceeded the ALTIMIT Corporation expectations.
2007.11 end of the month "The World" discountinuance sales rumor began to spread. CC Corporation denied the rumor.
2007.12.24 "The Mother Mary's Kiss" finally arrived. Alex Coleman, the president directing the worlds' "Network Security Declaration" was informed of the start of "The World" download sale.
200X The character, Tsukasa registered to "The World" (TV Animation Edition).
200X Aura begins her awakening... (TV Animation Edition & Game Edition).
2001X Kite was invited by Orca and logs into "The World". (Game Edition).
2001X Rena is presented the ".hackers official limited edition character" through an election. (Comic Edition).

did you watch ep 28, all of the udeden characters were there; the only fight scene in 28 featured Kite data-draining a monster that neither Balmung nor Orca can defeat (all 3 are from udeden)... i dont remember them being in the first hack; also hack sign 28 has the final The End screen, so its clearly the final ep in all of the series

Kite and Rose were in ep 28 (they were from udeden), ep 28 was released very recently, way after all of the other stuff including udeden has already been released, it was meant to be the final ep of the entire .hack story followed by the spoof that is ep 29 or gift
Have you not played the games? If you had, then you might know that the original Kite and Blackrose were from the game series. Udeden's Shugo and Rena only used the same character models. Please explain to me how they knew Elk and Mia, Tsukusa, Subaru, and the others if they were Shugo and Rena?

I've always hated Full Metal Panic, ever since I read a few chapters in Newtype (was it?) so I never even gave the anime a chance. Let me fix vio5555's confusion.
.Hack//Unison [ep28] does not belong after .Hack//UdeDen [dusk]. The characters you see are Kite and Blackrose who you seem to be confusing with Shugo and Rena from UdeDen [dusk].
.Hack//Unison [ep28] was just recently released in Japan so it could be released with the final game for ps2 in america. It is the conclusion of the games [instead of making another extremely short game they summed up the plot in a one episode special] .Hack//Unison is what happens after the game, the characters from .Hack//SIGN and the .Hack// games all celebrate the 'saving of The World' which was saved by Kite and Blackrose in the last game [Quarentine].
After saving 'The World' out of respect the game creators made Blackrose's and Kite's costumes 'limited edition' and did not let normal players use them.
In the continueing series [.Hack//UdeDen] Rena wins a play-character contest and wins the ability to use these costumes. She uses blackroses and her twin brother Shugo uses Kite's. That is why they looks alike, in .Hack//UdeDen they are NOT named Kite and Blackrose, they are Shugo and Rena [they just use the same costumes].
Got that? GIFT is a spoof and can be viewed anytime
[but preferably after SIGN, the games, and UNISON as it features many characters from both the games and SIGN]
'The End' screen is referring to the END OF THE GAMES and possibly SIGN

Pretty much right, except for //Legend of the Twlight. The anime version is completely non-continunity, only the manga verison is considered part of the timeline
Originally, //Legend of the Twilight was supposed to be manga only, but after the huge success and popularity of //SIGN and the games Bandai decided to create an anime version of //Legend of the Twilight
Unfortunately, the manga had barely started, so Bandai was forced to create their own storyline, while basing it loosely on the manga's story
There is also a new manga called .hack//ANOTHER BIRTH, which is a manga of the games told through BlackRose's point of view.
Also, recently, a new .hack supplement was released, .hack//ANALYSIS, which contains a HUGE amount of information about the characters of the .hack universe, as well as their real names and real life pictures.

Interesting .hack Character/Relationship Info

-After the events of //SIGN, Tsukasa was adopted by Bear, and she and Subaru started dating (yuri!), but their relationship was put on hold when Tsukasa moved away to an all-girls school dorm, but the two (and Mimiru) would all hang out once in a while
-Bear is divorced with a son and is a novelist
-Subaru lost her legs in a car accident as a result of the Pluto Kiss virus
-B.T is an aspiring model
-Krim is an office worker, and Subaru is the only online person whom have met him in real life
-Wiseman is 10 years old, the same age as Sora and are friends with him in real life (they go to the same school)
-Sora was in a coma for around a year and a half.
-Rachel and Nuke are both in College and are friends in real life (Rachel refers to them as 'business partners')
-SilverKnight/Ginkan works at a video store, and later got a new job at a pub
-Sanjuro is 27-29 years old, from American and is a Japanese language teacher
-Kite and Orca are 14 years old and is a Freshman in Junior High
-BlackRose is 16 years old and is a Sophmore in High School
-Natsume is 14 and is a Freshman in Junior High
-Terijima Ryoko is 15-16 in a prestigious all-girls Junior High
-BlackRose, Natsume and Ryoko are all in love with Kite (da playa!). It's not known yet who(if any) Kite chose, though Kazu is pushing Kite to ask BlackRose out
-Piros works in CC Corp as a character graphics designer
-Balmung is 18 years old (during //SIGN, 23 by //Legend of the Twilight) and worked in CC Corp as a graphics designer, and decided to become a System Administrator instead following the events of the games and //UNISON in order to keep his promise to Kite
-Shugo and Rena were once next door neighboors and good friends with BlackRose and Kazu. Rena had a crush on Kazu, and started playing 'The World' as a way of being closer to him (it wasn't a coincidence that Shugo and Rena were chosen by Aura to win her contest. And gee, I wonder where Rena heard so much about the .hackers from XD)
-Rena are friends with Hotoko(from //AI BUSTER) and SilverKnight in 'The World'
-Shugo has a crush on Aura
-Shugo, Rena, BlackRose, Kite, Natsume, and Orca all live close to one another
-Mirielle really is Mistral's daughter. According to //Anaylis and one of the new //Legend of the Twilight drama CDs, Shugo is shocked to find out from Ouka that Mirielle is a 4 year old with an IQ of over 200, and inherited her mother's character and won a special event to change her name from Mistral to Mirielle. Mirielle has no idea that her mother was one of the .hackers
-Ouka is a college student, are friends with Mistral IRL and is Mirelle's home tutor.
-You find out at the end of one of the //Legend of the Twilight drama CDs that Hotaru (//LotT) is really a guy XD

Information regarding the Timeline, Harold, 'The World', Aura, Morganna, and the Phases

It all started with a programmer called Harold. He was a programmer at CC Corp and fell in love with a woman, but she died in an accident. Heartbroken, he sought to create a child for himself and his girlfriend, a symbol of his love
The first child born was an AI girl called Lycoris (she looked exactly like Aura, but wore red clothing instead). However, she was bugged and was actually blind. She befriended a System Administrator called Albio, a Long Arm (with two different eyes)and Hotuko, an Elven Wave Master. However, Lycoris was eventually killed by Albio. (.hack//AI BUSTER)
The 2nd child was to become the AI called Aura
Aura was ment to bridge the gap between AI and reality. How she was supposed to accomplish this is still unknown at this time.
Harold created Morgana, another AI whose purpose was to oversee the birth of Aura. The 8 Phases were created in order to collect information about human emotions.
All of this became known as the 'Epitaph of Twilight'.
How would Harold collect information about emotions? Because all of this was created in a game called 'Fragments', the beta version of 'The World'.
Eventually, Harold uploaded his own memory emgrams into computer data and inputed himself into 'Fragments', where he could finally see Aura's birth.
However, CC Corp decided to create 'The World', which is actually built on top of 'Fragments', with bits and pieces of 'Fragments' floating within 'The World's code.
Harold didn't know anything about women, and never realised that Morgana wouldn't try to rebel. Morgana realised that she will be deleted once Aura awakens and becomes complete, thus she tried to prevent her from awakening. Morgana sought out an individual with great negative emotions and imprisoned that person within 'The World', linking that individual with Maha, a Phase as well as Aura.
Thus the events of //SIGN and the games takes place.
After //SIGN ended, Morgana sent a Twin Blade - based on Sora's data - after Aura, but she was protected by a Long Arm called Curl, whom manages to defeat Copy Sora. (.hack//ZERO).
Desperate, Morgana then decides to send the 8 Phases after Aura, and .hack//INFECTION begins and the 'Epitaph of Twilight' begins to play itself out.
Three Years Later...
Aura creates a contest for Kite/BlackRose's avatars, and arranges for Shugo and Rena to win the contest. Then, meeting Shugo(love at first sight :love: ) returns to him the Twilight Bracelet. Shugo later meets a girl called Zephie, who claims that she is the daughter of Aura, whom Shugo takes as a little sister.
Later, Zephie meets Kamui, a System Admin whom intends on deleting Shugo and Rena, which causes Zephie to remember about a Long Arm she once met with two different eyes...(.hack//LEGEND OF THE TWILIGHT - Manga verison. Only read 2 of 3 volumes, so the story isn't complete yet)

What is Cubia? *GAME SPOILERS!*

Throughout //MUTATION -> //QUARANTINE, the .hackers continually meet up with this entity. A being of complete darkness that appears and confronts the heros. But what is it? And who is the person that you can see within Cubia's core?
Cubia is actually the dark half of the Twilight Bracelet(the shadow of the person inside Cubia's core is really Kite). When Kite uses the Twilight Bracelet to Data Drain monsters, the bracelet deletes and re-works the bits and pieces of the code in order to change the parameters of the target. The missing code must go somewhere, and the bits and pieces of the codes slowly gather up
Normally this isn't a big deal, since the missing bits and pieces of coding exists within the game itself, so it doesn't cause any major problems
However, things like 'Data Bugs' are corrupt data that exists outside the game programming. This causes a gradual build up of corrupt data
But, even corrupt data from Data Bugs isn't enough to cause major problems, however, the 8 Phases contains millions of times more data than almost everything else in 'The World', and Data Draining them causes the corrupt data to skyrocket, eventually forming Cubia
Eventually, Cubia became so powerful due to the Data Draining of the 8 Phases that it became near invincible, with absaloutely no stopping it - except for one method:
Destroying the Twilight Bracelet
The two are linked, neither can exist without the other

//UNISON (ep28 of //SIGN) - a few months after //QUARANTINE
//LEGEND OF THE TWILIGHT - (length unknown at this time. It does take place 4 years after the games)

AI Buster is a 1-part novel about
the beta-version of 'The World'
and I just put .Hack//UdeDen at the end of the list because the costumes are from the game characters. My list
is not the correct order in which the series take place but in what order you should watch them. Like if you watched
ep27 before SIGN it wouldnt make too much sense and would be a big spoiler so its best to watch it after the SIGN series.
Oh and I Know that the contest was held by Aura but I just didnt want to post it because it could spoil the series [and we all know how much spoiler posts attract people even if they really don't want to spoil the series. Temptation :) ]

Changed one thing on the list, it's a pretty big change and added two things very interesting.
It's about
-Mirielle really is Mistral's daughter. I would reccomend reading the .hack//LotT manga. It is alot better then the show. Which is saying alot considering I *really* liked the show.

.Hack//SIGN is completely out on DVD and the last special edition DVD also features
the specials: Intermezzo [27], Unison [28] and GIFT.
All four .Hack// Games for the playstation 2 are out, which also counts for the 4 .Hack//Liminality OVAs.
.Hack//UdeDen is said to be released shortly.
My Limited Edition .hack//SIGN Volume 6 is on it's way, I can't wait. I am still not sure if I'm getting UdeDen.
Definantly got to sell this Japanese PS2 and gt a US one so I can play the .hack games.
something else about mirielle/mistral: at the beginning of //OUTBREAK, Mistral goes on hiatus (becomes unavailable...like i used her anyway heh) after she tells Kite this: "I'm a housewife and i'm having a baby soon"
also...orca looks a lot like Bear :)
in much the same way that Elk looks like Tsukasa and Mimiru looks like Blackrose (MMORPGs have limited character models...there's an episode of //SIGN where Subaru meets a disgruntled player with a similar character model...who happens to be disgruntled because she looks like Subaru :))

.Hack//SIGN is completely out on DVD and the last special edition DVD
so that means the box set is now available? :) i have been stalling on buying any .hack//sign cuz i have been waiting too long for the box set.
No plans yet for a Box Set release, considering the Volume 1 came with a very Limited edition box (which has long gone out of print and is pretty darn expensive). Maybe, considering the nature of the first box, there might be a release with an ordinary box, but I would imagine it's not coming for a good 1.5-2/3 years

(1-4)DVD1: Lighter parts, events and meetings
(5-8)DVD2: Starting of Plot->rising action
(9-12)DVD3: Final Conclusion (starts with the best ep ever! ep9!)

If by SIGN and SIGN alone, there's one season. (25 episodes, along with 2 bonus episodes)
Then, seperately, there's the 4 OVA series Liminality and the 12-episode Legend of the Twilight series. Limanilty takes place during the games, which are after SIGN. Legend of the Twilight takes place after the games. The special "28th episode" of SIGN takes place after the games but before Legend of the Twilight. Confused? Ok. :)
I'm currently watching Hack Sign, great so far. I'm just wondering what the order is. Is it Hack Sign 1-27, Hack Dusk, Hack Sign 28, and Hack Liminality? Just want to make sure so it makes more sense.

I'm currently watching Hack Sign, great so far. I'm just wondering what the order is. Is it Hack Sign 1-27, Hack Dusk, Hack Sign 28, and Hack Liminality? Just want to make sure so it makes more sense.

How are the .Hack games? I finished watching Hack Sign, Luminality, and 28 Unison, since I haven't played the games Unison doesn't make much sense in terms of the characters. I'm not a very big fan of RPGs, but I like the story for .Hack.

The games are great if you've seen //SIGN because it answers a lot of questions.
On the other hand, the games are kind of repetitive, and quite short (each game is roughly 8-12 hours long). They pretty much took the game and split it onto 4 CDs instead to leech more money off of us :P
It's also one of the few games that offers the option to engage either the original Japanese voices, OR the English voices (are you listening? Square-Enix? Monolith?).

Thanks, I've tried the demo for .Hack Infection, the story is good, decent graphics, and boring gameplay. Can't imagine playing through all 4 disks to see how the story goes through. It would have been much better if the games were made into animes, Luminality was great, but an anime based on whats happening within The World. Any link on the story for the games? Thank you for your time and valuable knowledge.

Why? The games own.
Hm, I suppose they figured it would make it special and interesting to split a story onto different media, but to be frank it kinda annoys me. So now I've seen .hack//sign and the ending didn't explain anything really. For some reason I kept watching, but overall it was very slowpaced and kinda boring (x episodes of waiting for Tsukasa is like watching paint dry). I thought this series was interesting but without having access to the rest it is rather disappointing.
Even if my PS2 was still working (bahroken :(), there's no way I'd buy and play 4 games to get the rest of the story.

Before this topic evaporates, does anyone know any details about the new Complete Collection release for .SIGN? Specifically, does it have a Japanese 5.1 soundtrack remix, or is the 5.1 just English?
I know I just bought all the regular discs, but surround sound is very, very tempting... :)

I believe it's the same as the regular DVds, it's just a boxset...yeah, thats it...I think. Just a box with all the previous DVDs :)

There's one near the start of this thread, or almost complete.
The very first thing is proberly the novels .hack//AI Buster Vol 1, then Vol 2. The anime SIGN is next.
Question: Where was all the character/relationship info from. A few things I noticed in the main SIGN anime and then a few others were hinted at or said in SIGN's episode Unison.
Also, does anyone know anything about a .hack//SIGN manga? I heard mention of it on a wikipedia entry. And has .Hack//ZERO been translated into English?
Changed one thing on the list, it's a pretty big change and added two things very interesting.
It's about
-Mirielle really is Mistral's daughter. According to //Anaylis and one of the new //Legend of the Twilight drama CDs, Shugo is shocked to find out from Ouka that Mirielle is a 4 year old with an IQ of over 200, and inherited her mother's character and won a special event to change her name from Mistral to Mirielle. Mirielle has no idea that her mother was one of the .hackers. The reason why she has all those rare items is because it's really from her mother.
-Ouka is a college student, are friends with Mistral IRL and is Mirelle's home tutor.
-You find out at the end of one of the //Legend of the Twilight drama CDs that Hotaru (//LotT) is really a guy in real life! XD
The drama CD was called "Let's meet offline", wasn't it? Though where is the name change event from? It just mentions that Mirielle's mother was a legend in the world (going with other things, it is heavily implied that they are daughter and mother) and about half her stuff is from her. Going by the [Excal] translation anyway.

Hotaru's gender seems to be a bit inconsistent - the .hack//DUSK manga portrays Hotaru's player as female, and apparently the "A.I. Buster 2" short story collection also describes the real Hotaru as a girl.
Mireille (real name Mirei) is clearly shown in the manga to be Mistral's daughter - there's even a part where she briefly borrows her character back from her child as the remaining .hackers reunite online. In the manga, Mireille also talks about how she got her character and won an event to change her name.

Strangely on the profile it names him Firefly?? but in the text itself, another player calls him Hotaru. It doesn't say one way or the other about his gender, but I get the impression that he's male and not very outgoing from reading it.

The story is about Hotaru and Sanjoros first meeting. When Horaru first enters the Japanese server she has a hard time communtcating with anyone because Japanese is a second language to her. At this time a fairy shows up and ask her over and over, "What is unique in the world, yet evryone has one." This is a special event for her, but she can't solve the riddle.
She soon gains some help from Sanjuro who agrees to help her out. He doesn't know the answer to the riddle, (:rolleyes: ) but asks Hotaru to going him for a special event that only occurs once a year. the event is a point were thousands of fireflies fly away. This gives Horaru the answer to riddle. Her name Firefly is a refferance to when she was little and still lived in Japan with her grandmother.
The prize that she wins for answering the riddle is a little pet grunty.

Hey all -
I know this is a really old thread, but I'm just about to embark on watching everything .hack and I was wondering, what with hack//roots and all, if the order of which you should watch it has changed. Also, if I am not planning to play the games, is there anything I can do (like reading novels or manga) to replace that? If I'm gonna get into the whole .hack thing, I'd best do it properly....
hack roots takes place after Legend of the twilight bracelet, so the order shouldn't change. I believe that the novels for hack that Tokyopop has been releasing is the hack game as seen from blackrose's perspective.

Ok. So I just got done watching all of .hack//SIGN and I already played the first series of games. Infection, mutation, Outbreak, Quarantine. I understand the story up to there and haven't had the time or money to play the other game series or read any of the manga or books. But then I realized I didn't even KNOW about HALF of what is out there on this. As I was playing the games I always had the question int he back of my head, "Where did the legend of Balumung come from and all the others?" So i wiki'd it and found a crap load of stuff. But now I am having trouble finding the proper order they all go. Please correct me if I am wrong and put in anything I am missing or take out anything I added incorrectly:

If i remember correctly .Hack//G.U series take place in "The world R2" while the other hack games take place in "The World" also .hack//trilogy seem to be an alternative story to .hack//G.U series (not sure about that).

Tsukasa, a player in The World goes into a coma while playing the game and is unable to "logout."

The games take place shortly after .hack//sign's ending and in conjunction with .hack//liminaliy OVA. The main characters in the games are Kite and Blackrose. Shugo and Rena (brother and sister) win character mods to look as the infamous .hackers (Kite and Blackrose from the video games). Shugo obtains the Data Drain technique by Aura, an A.I. anomaly in The World. .hack//AI buster volumes one and two are novels based on the beta version of "The World", Fragment. .hack//Another Birth is a novelization of the four original .hack video games based on Blackrose's point of view.

Can someone update the list. //GU and //Roots isn't in there and there are a couple others missing as well. Where does the order for the newer books and episodes go into the storyline.
