View Full Version : Hajime no Ippo: New Challenger
New season CONFIRMED!
http://imepita.jp/20080914/517260
For those that can't read japanese, it says new HnI anime starting JANUARY 2009! FINALLY! :D
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG *faints*
I've gotta tell everyone I know!!
Shouldn't the licenses be free to these new episodes? Since Geneon only licensed the first 75 episodes (and don't plan to continue the series)?

Please somebody reassure me that " in a new anime series" means continuation and not a spinoff/remake/retail/whatever nonsense. PLEASE

id prefer a remake to be honest. start from the beginning all over again
You'd prefer a remake to seeing Takamura vs Hawk animated? ... Why?
Mashimaro

Ippo fights were pretty awesome but COME ON! TAKAMURA VS HAWK was THE fight that brought tears!

id rather them start from scratch. The animation techniques we have to day would be freaking awesome in Ippo. Dosent matter though, i doubt we'd get any long running series for a while. These days they seem to be doing a load of 12 episode seasons.
Plus i wasn't keen on the VA's, especially Takamura
Err...what? Did we watch the same series? I thought Takamura's VA was PERFECT for the past. Hmm, maybe you read the manga first and had your own ideas?
Myaimistrue
2008-09-21, 12:45
Pretty much every VA was perfect, in my opinion.
In fact, I'll be completely crushed if they don't bring back the exact same VAs for all their old roles. They were all absolutely perfect for the characters. I also thought that the animation was just fine -- the first spar between Miyata and Ippo, for example, was animated beautifully at times. It looked far better than the manga, where Mori's art had only just begun to evolve.
If they started from scratch it would be one of the biggest wastes of potential in anime history. They have so much absolutely amazing material to work with...Takamura/Hawk, Ippo/Sawamura, Date/Martinez, etc. It would be absolutely ridiculous if they just started from scratch to remake an already brilliant first season. A waste of their money, and a waste of our time.
Tiamat's Disciple

the Va was good, but it just dosent fit the image i had of Takamura. Usually this wouldn't be a problem, but to me it just feels to wrong

This is one of the greatest tidbits of anime-related news I've heard in a long time. I'm genuinely excited, Hajime no Ippo is such an amazing series. I loved the original VAs as well, I would be pretty disappointed if we're to go without them. I also feel this should be a sequel, as the best has yet to come for the fights in terms of where the anime left off.

Hello Everyone.
Weekly Shounen Magazine has confirmed that the anime Hajime no Ippo will return in Jan. 2009. This is my favorite anime and manga. Funny, intense, and cool fights.
WOOHOO.:D

I would think it's very likely a continuation of the last series, i.e. where they ended with Ippo winning the Japanese Featherweight Title vs. Sendo.
This new anime then would probably focus in how Ippo would defend his title (although we saw his 1st title defense in the movie). But yes, I HOPE it's a CONTINUATION and not a RESET, since there is no lack of material to animate for ANOTHER 75 EPISODES, plus there are too many AWESOME fights as mentioned above that we still haven't seen animated! :D

kinda of waiting this one.... I want to see not only Ippo to grow but also the other boxers.... Even I'm waiting Miyata Vs. Ippo again...
Note: Is it just me or you're title is wrong? "Hajime no Ippo"...

I just fell outta my seat!
Thank goodness it was getting hard having that OVA not even starring Ippo as the last animated work...As much as I love the fighting I hope there is a bit more emphasis on the relationships...It's like they pwned us on all the love interest stories, pulling us along but never really concluding it...

Another must see series!
The manga had alot of good fights between the other boxers namely Takamura. I hope they will animate it! Will be looking forward to this in 2009.

oh thank you god i have been praying for another season of hajime no ippo
i freaking love this series. I wonder how many episode are thier going to be.
And man they have a ton of manga material to use to cover so many episodes
im so looking forward to this
One of my all time favorites... WOOT!
I would not want a remake... I watched the original series and I had nothing to complain about, it was still captivating. I'd prefer they make a whole new story and captivate me again. God damn this anime was good.

Tears were shed!
Wow! This is the second anime I'm excited about this season!
Defintely want them to keep going forward since I never read the manga and hopefully bring back the same director and gorgeous animation style! I really cant see how anyone would have a problem with the animation, it was gorgeous and fluid 90% of the time and anime usually is really jerky.

I want this only! This is the first anime I've been excited about in a long time! I just ordered the two volume set off rightstuf last night so I could rewatch the series, and now I have this to look forward to! I agree that it would be best if they pick up right where they left off, same voices, same artist, and I really hope they get the music right again. I still listen to the first two intros from time to time, just to get me pumped up!

This is great news, and will get me back into anime for a while. I can't imagine that they'd start over from the beginning, but do you think they'll redo the OVA and the movie? As they were pretty hastily done, with cuts to accomodate for time. I'm fine either way though.
OH MY GOD.
Yes please.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
These exact same words crossed my mind when I read the first post LOL. This is probably the only anime I'm excited to see atm. I haven't been able to really enjoy a series (not even geass or gundam 00, unfortunately), but it was mostly likely because I had no personal attachments. I've been following Hajime manga for sooooooo long, so definitely looking forward to see this.
EDIT:
From the little bit that I see not cutoff, the magazine talks about the anime on its 2000 - 2002 run. I'm sure they will be continuing where they last left off, and not remaking the series. It wouldn't be plausible to do a remake anyway, considering the interval of time that has passed and the girth of the manga left.
They are continuing where they last left off, post Kimura vs Mashiba.
And for those worried, it is Madhouse Studios again.

Sweet. Is there any word on how many episodes are they planning? I heard 90, which would be amazing, but I don't really believe that, even though they have more than enough material to work with to come up with 90 episodes.
eh really~? then looking forward to it. I hope to see more epic fights. yay~!

the brian hawk vs takumara fight
and
ippo vs Sawamura Ryuuhei
those fights are gonna be epic watching.
I wonder if their going to use the same music in the 2nd series.
the 1st series the fighting music was brilliant
Great more Ippo cant wait, will this new series be picking up from where the last one left off?

I can already predict where this new series is gonna end (if only to give the manga story more room to advance further)! Oh yes, they're gonna "build it up", they're gonna "hype it to death", everyone will be "shivering with anticipation"....and then.... *BAM!* Series Ends! :D
*Manga readers you should know what I'm talkin about!* :)

YES!!! The godly Martinez!
He spared with Miyata and he gets countered everytime! Ippo didn't land punches he was left jabbed and daze when the spar was over. The author is 100% Bias when it comes to this guy, even in the games he's the strongest! He can beat Takamura and take hits from the Bear, if you ever played HNI in the ps2.

Seconded. I cannot wait to see that animated. Ippo will probably break into my top 5 list from this new season.
When Takamura pounds Hawk's face into the mat... that is the single greatest beat down punch ever. Probably my favorite moment in any fight in the entire series.

The Randy Boy Jr. and Miyata fight has to be almost a one sided match up to the latest chapter.

Almost december. Only a little over a month to go until new episodes!
So the first fight should be Sanada/Ippo right? Been nearly a year since I read it, I'm half tempted to go through the archives for Ippo again.

That's already finished with the Champion road movie.
It'll probably start with Itagaki joining the Gamoga squad.
I also saw an ad with Arnie's image so I think the Arnie vs Miyata match will be drawn into this season.
Whoops, forgot about that. You're right. :heh:

I went back to see which volume Itagaki joined Kamogawa gym. It was volume 39 after the Date vs Ricardo "Diablo" Martinez match and before Ippo - Hammer Nao match.
Yeah I decided to reread it, but thanks. All its doing is making me more excited for the new season though.

Are these the same as the first series? According to animenfo Takamura's VA is different in the first series which would really suck...
Also, Takamura vs. Hawk and Genji vs. the American guy.. can't remember his name, are by far the most exciting and emotional fights to look forward to in my opinion. I can't wait for January!
In contrast I thought the Ippo vs. the filipino? I think, the Magic guy who has the 'extending arms' I thought was a really boring fight.

i wonder how they will start the new season
ippo doenst fight a whole lot if they start after the move when he fought sanada
after that it goes
miyata vs crocodile
date vs Ricardo Martinez
hammer nao vs ippo
i wonder if they are gonna skip or re arrange some of the fights. Cuz it might be wierd starting off with the miyata fight
Nah, Miyata winning the OPBF is an important event as is Data vs Martinez, and Ippo is still recovering from the Sanada fight iirc. Doing those before the Hammer Nao fight makes sense.
Plus both are better fights than Ippo vs Hammer Nao anyway.
I can't wait to see Martinez in the anime.

The sub-title is "New Challenger" so "Raijin" Miyata and "Jesus" Date both fits the description as well as Takamura in the world ranking level.
I also believe they will introduce Itagaki at the very beginning since it also fits the theme.
My guesses for this season ending is;
Takamura wins the belt after the grueling weight management scene and this season ends after that they create an OVA that introduce the Sgt.Anderson vs Kamogawa match when Aoki and Ippo makes an escape to Nekoda's pension in the snow.
Was the first Ippo series seperated into seasons or did they just continually release new episodes until it reached 75 episodes and the OVAs?

2008-12-09, 03:18
It was consecutive but you see the changes in seasons since they change the opening at that timing.
So the last season it was three seasons.(6 cours)
Not sure what a cour is, but I'm guessing its a run of 12-13 episodes?

Also you gotta wonder with all the other popular characters why did Sendo had a Gaiden Manga? Probably because of his backstory and character development anime and manga. Plus people missed him since after being away from the ring and just guesting in a few panels...glad the Tiger is back. :D
Nooo!
They changed Kamogawa Coach's VA? Dammit! Issei Futumata was really decent :(
As in for the others, I see no change. Rikiya is still Takamura's VA.
I really loved marathoning this anime for 2 weeks (lol finals). And the movie... was just a masterpiece. In my honestly opinion, best (shounen) anime ever.

I on the other hand think they will rearrange the fights. Since it's Hajime no IPPO and it's starting a new season after over 6 years, they will show the Geromichi fight first for a taste of Ippo action, and then show the CrocodilexMiyata fight next. Just my opinion.
Also, yay for the new season being almost here. This topic of mine will get huge (hopefully ippo will get its own forum, though). :D

The animation and art didn't deteriorated it is still as crisp and solid like the Movie!
Though I might criticize that the backgrounds are all black, less detail on the crowd unlike the movie, but seeing the characters detail so solid like that it's awesome!

To me, this is the reason to live in 2009.
Of course, way back when the first run ended, EVERYBODY was downtrodden and were saying how all the good fights were cut off.
But now.. wow.. too many great fights to see animated. It's literally going to be insane. It's as if Berserk came back and started animating all its best scenes. But the fights should lend themselves to epicness. IN HIGH DEFINITION.
And since it's Madhouse, I have full confidence in them. Especially with the awesome crop of anime all around by Madhouse in the past year.
Haohmaru

Trailer looks good. Lets just hope this won't have the same cheap ass action scenes that a lot of other Madhouse series have. We need some a-class animators on this.

LOL! Defintely!!!
I just wanna know is the original director back?
I think he is the reason the original series was so fantastic!
Also, it looks like the animation isn't as nice and distinctive this time around...I hope I'm wrong. But the thick outlines around the characters are gone now...the style looks more like generic anime stuff..but meh. Hopefully they retained the fluid body movement animations!!

The only question mark is that the director, music and storyboard people are totally changed. I can only hope they don't drop this project by its head like the Slayers Revolution guys did. But it IS Madhouse and they seem to put Ippo as a series in high regards. If they flub this, I'd definitely be quite mad at Madhouse. After years of continuously making great anime, it'd be a shock if they flub this.

Most HNI fans are hardcore boxing fans and fanatics, some are even boxers or fighters themselves.
To tell you the truth Ippo started slow in the anime and manga on my part, but when it got to the fights it got interesting, developing muscle strength and other techniques and stuff, but what really got to me was Kamogawa the trainer.
I really LOVED Kamogawa's flashback stories, on how he used the Tekken. I first saw that in the game when I bought a HNI for the PS2 the cut scene with the log training is awesome, Kamogawa's fists as it BASHES on the log as he says "ONE SHOT! JUST ONE BODY SHOT!!! TO TAKE THE G.I. DOWN!" and man what a great ending it had very tear jerking. I appreciated it more when I saw it in the manga.
Now Iam only waiting for it to get animated.
Just 3 more days... and, yes, that short trailer was not good D:

Right after Ippo's first defending match with Sanada Kazuki.
The Kimura vs Mashiba title match was done through OVA.
My guess is based on the titles already announced is that Arnie vs Miyata arc will be the first to be animated.

Morikawa-san the author of Hajime no Ippo actually owns his own boxing gym and stands-in as second at professional matches at Korakuen hall for the last 10 years. So his art is something only a person that had actually stood there can portray. The expression of the winner as well as the one who had been beaten is also sheer realism through what he had seen at the ring.

If there's any type of an MMA manga like in the vein of Ippo, I'm sure they're going to use Korakuen Hall too, because it is a happening place for MMA too.
Also, I sorta wonder why in the manga, there' so few Korean characters considering they're a constant presence in Korakuen Hall. Can't blame him I guess, because of the language barrier. :heh:
Filipinos need to get more presence... especially after Pacquiao. I haven't caught up in Ippo recently, but I wonder if they mention Pacquiao as a real life champion.

I'm somewhat disappointed in the 1st episode, but it has more to do with the new music direction than anything else. The comedy felt a little bland without it. But my Japanese is rudimentary at best so I'll wait for a subbed version for better impressions.

The yaoi GROPING part kinda scared me, but it's part of HNI comedy.
Wait till you see Itagaki's Father!!! lol :heh: There will be ALOT OF PUNS!
It's just the first the episode, the more episodes the better the story flows. We'll note also if the episode is a filler or part of the manga.
Also the way they teach how to box and counter when they talk is simply brilliant for boxing and sports fans.
Still can't believe season 2 has come. I mean, so many sport animes ends before the good stuff (usually finals), but this is different. Instead, we get to see even more :D

I did check out the Op&Ed a while ago and they're VICIOUS.
The Op isnt nearly as good as Shocking Lemon but it's defintely good and gets me pumped for the series. I hope it's used IN the series during some fitting emotional scenes like the old intro themes were. The ED theme is slightly better than most of the old ones, HNI never had amazing edings or anything.
The animation looks a lot more vibrant but not quite as details with the body movements and such as the original. Still I'll wait until we see more before I complain too much. It still looks really good but the original series looks RIDICULOUSLY good and actually stands the test of time. I had no idea the series was that old when I watched it a year ago.

After Takamura pulls down Ippo's swimsuit (0:39), Kumi unleases her boxing DNA and smakes Ippo with a flicker jab(0:41) into Ippo's right jaw.:heh:
Anybody have a screen shot of that awsome punch?
I don't think we need to make "small talk" i.e. spam in order to get our own forum. These things have to happen naturally. If only 5 of us are watching this thing, even if we get a whole forum to ourselves we won't be able to fill it up without more "small talk". Let's just have fun and say what we want to without thinking too much about forums and post numbers.
Well 5 people making small talk is pretty much the reason why Sekirei never got a forum, just see how things go and not try and force it to much and hopefully the shows popular enough to get a subforum.
Liking the new OP btw, still need to watch a lot of Ippo Season 1 before I dive into this but I intend to catch up very soon.

Well this is easily one of the biggest Animes to come out this year. It definitely needs a sub forum, as that would make it get even more views. I know a lot of people who watch every anime that's listed under it's own sub forum since they think those are the most popular, heck I am one of those people (Though to be fair I watch all those + about 10 other series)

Sooooooo any fansub out yet?
Well... it might be just me but... when you get to see the HD raw... you just note the bad decision of putting piano and sad songs on the first episode... not that everyone hasn't noted it, just pointing it out again.

Seems like it picks up after the Champions Road OVA. Some incredibly gay moments in there though lol beyond "normal" anime. Why they did that I'm not sure, it might scare off a few newcomers.

^Or entice them into watching more? ROFL
Depends on the person.
Anyway, I totally couldnt tell what was happening in those three scenes from the ending! I thought Takamura smacked Ippo! Lol. Now it makes a LOT more sense!XDD
Is this season licensed?
No, it is not.
The Kimura vs Mashiba OVA and ep. 76 also weren't licensed.
Subtitled Part One - Enjoy!

I didn't notice hers being different, but Takamura's and Ippo's trainer sounded different to me. Maybe it's just my imagination though since it's been years since I've last seen this show.

There IS a new actor playing the trainer. Apparently, he's the only one of the main cast that couldn't return for this series.

That's Shinoda-san, trainer of Aokimura not Ippo and Takamura since Kamogawa's VA is the same.

I'm not exactly disappointed, but what I think 2008 lacked was a really heavy-hitter anime like Gurren Lagann was in 2007 and Suzumiya/Death Note/Code Geass in 2006.
This one seems to be a possible heavy-hitter for 2009.

Hello!
Does anyone have the lyrics of the opening and the ending?
Here is the lyrics for ending
"8AM"
Somehow, I can't remember why
You stayed up 'til 4 AM
'til 4 AM
We talked about nothing important and then made love
"No persons can be close as us/close her eyes"
"No persons can be close as us/close her eyes"
And now she calls my name inside her dream
And kisses me "so effortlessly"
Oh, I wish that we could stay right there
Yeah, yeah, yeah
You set your alarm to work to sleep at three
I'd do anything if I could make this time rewind forever
'til 7:59
Can't really make out what their saying in start for OP.

Heh, last week in Naruto it was the opposite.
They got away with the lesbo scene, but removed the yaoi aone. (while it was the EXACT SAME SCENE, except it was 2 boys hugging each others naked instead of 2 girls)
I guess it all depends on the sensibilities of the producers.

Going back to topic gotta wonder how the animation in Arnie G. and Miyata fight will be like? Similar to the HNI Champion Road movie? Or will the animation tranish?...I hope not, since the beginning HNI's animation was superb and the body movement are realistic.
Next Up! BLOODY CROSS!
Wait what?
Kamogawa coach's VA is the same? First season had Issei Futamata... now this season has another one... who can confirm this?
It's exactly the same voice, though. It's like it didn't change :V

Probably the voice actor is a good one, since he still sound like an oldman. Or if that's still the same probably they'll use the new voice actor for something like...
the young Kamogawa.
5 more days to episode 2.
Man...this just started to air and I'm already thinking about it every day :D
DAMN! Having HnI back is amazing, and first ep has the same feeling as the first series so no complaints here :)
Now they just need to get Hikaru no Go back and I can die happy :P

No Kamogawa's VA from the first season is Utsumi Kenji.
I also noticed that Mashiba Kumi's VA had indeed changed, the first season was Kobayashi Sanae and in this series it will be Hirata Yuka.

This one seems to be a possible heavy-hitter for 2009.
What!? 2008 was lacking!?
Let me direct you to the Code Geass, Clannad, Kannagi, Gundam 00, Index, Toradora, Soul Eater, One Outs, XamD, and Ga-Rei Zero fans. If you think 2008 was lacking then you just weren't watching anime, or at least the right anime.
The second season of Clannad, Gode Geass, and Gundam 00 are enough to call 2008 good for anime, and then you throw in the heavy hitter Soul Eater and One Outs/XamD and it was a good year.
I'll at least admit that there wasn't an anime as good as Gurren Lagann, but Animes that good only come once every 10 years so so. I don't expect to see an anime that good for another few years.
I glad that HnI is back on the air, but the change in music style is throwing me off. The orchestral sound just doesn't feel right and is something that you'd see more in a space opera than a sports anime. It's especially bad toward the end, sounding like Castlevania or Final Fantasy boss battle music :heh:
I have some quality concerns about the show. Is it me, or do the characters not seem to be drawn as detailed as the previous seasons. Like there's missing pencil shadows on the face or something? Maybe it's just that the previous episodes of HnI were OVAs. *shrug*
Also, I noticed that the VA and animation wasn't matching up at some points. The major one being right as Miyata gets knocked down. As Kimura is shaking his fist up and down, his mouth open as though he were talking and then then a second later, his dialogue comes out. I'm not talking about an audio sync problem, because Kimura's mouth stops moving when he stops talking. Just a plain error on the director's part. I was watching the Animebreaker version.
I'd have to rate the episode a 6 out of 10 for now. Maybe after getting used to the shows changes, I might bump it higher, but for now it's a definite 6. Still, I can't wait for the next episode!

It's really weird with the voicing, because it's basically been TEN YEARS since the original run. So some guys just sound more... adult than before. Kimura is basically an anime veteran now and he sound way older and wiser than he really is in the manga. Weird. :twitch:
Oh, and Takamura always seemed too beastly and wild to have such a dignified voice actor like Rikiya Koyama (I know.. he does a lot of wild roles, but it almost never seems to match him when he's trying to do wacky roles. Death/Shinigami-sama in Soul Eater was an exception).

That's pretty common for Japanese animation. They don't care as much about hitting the lip flaps perfectly as they do having the right actors and line delivery.

Ippo is back!
The animation is very modern now but we still have the very familiar character designs. It's great to see how much improvement the industry as made over the years by just comparing this series. Most of the VA's are from the original cast and I felt nostalgic hearing them again. I kind of miss the VA who did the coach though, and Takamura doesn't sound as tough or youthful as he use to. It also appears that the tone of the characters are more conserved/less rowdy than before.
Anyways, I'm pumped and looking forward to the match! Can't wait for more Ippo next week. =)

I was in the same situation as you before.
HnI S1 + OVA + Movie ends at Chapter 314. From 315 onwards, Season 2 begins.
If you'd like, from Ch 270 onwards, you can stop reading and watch the OVA + Movie.
If you plan on doing this, watch the OVA first because the events that take place in the OVA happens before the movie.

All the main characters sound almost exactly as they did originally.
Altho, I dont remember Miyata as Tomokazu Seki(probably because I wasnt familiar with him when I watched the original series) and now that I like him in so many other roles it's awesome that he plays Miyata.
He played a similar character in the other anime that just ended its second season so I went straight from a series he was a lead in to Ippo and it was surprising!

The mangaka's interviews basically stated that he was inspired by real life boxing and Ashita no Joe.
