About the SOTM:The Signature Of The Month contest is open to all members of the Animesuki Forums. The goal of the contest is to provide a fun and competitive way of showing off and improving the signatures and personal skills of contestants. The winner of each months contest is given the privilege of choosing the theme for the next month.

The contest begins on the first of each month and consists of roughly two weeks of entry creation/submission, one week of voting, and one week off. The entry and voting periods may be extended or shortened slightly as needed.100

About the SOTM Theme:Each month prospective contestants are given a theme to base their entries on. This theme is decided by the winner of the previous contest. The theme can be anything, as long as it does not break forum rules regarding inappropriate material. At the end of the month, voters choose which entries they liked best out of all submitted entries and a new winner is decided. Themes cannot be used twice in a row.100

The Rules of the SOTM:
1. Contestants are allowed to create, work on, and submit their entry from the start of the contest until two weeks from the start date. This period of time is specified by the organizer every month. Once the entry period expires, all submitted entries are gathered up and sent to the Voting Thread.

2. Contestants must submit original works. This means you cannot simply cut a picture out, slap your name on it, and call it your own. Claiming someone else's work as your own is also not allowed. Anyone caught doing this will have their entries removed from the contest.

To further expand on this rule:2A. Unless proven otherwise, all entries made by contestants are derivatives of works made by someone else. Thus, no claim of "ownership" shall be made in reference to the image(s) used in the signature entry.

2B. Misrepresenting someone else's signature work for your own is prohibited and will result in an immediate expulsion of the entry and disqualify the contestant from the current month's contest.

2C. In the spirit of originality, "crop" sigs are frowned upon, but not discouraged; however, the contest organizer can call upon all contestants to show the source of their entry(ies) at any time.

2D. Also in the spirit of originality, new signatures are encouraged. However, if you feel one of your older signatures is perfect for the theme and wish to enter it, you may. Just remember that the signature still has to follow the rules stated above.3. Contestants are allowed to create as many entries as they wish, but are only allowed to enter one. To submit an entry officially, the contestant must mark the post in the Offical Entry Thread containing that entry with the words "Final Entry", or they can submit the signature to the contest organizer using the private message function.

4. Contestants who wish to keep their entries private until after the submission period can private message the contest organizer with their entry. The entry will not be displayed until submissions are closed, unless the contestant displays that entry publicly.

5. Entries must comply with Animesuki rules regarding signature size. This means each entry can be no larger than 500 x 160, and must be less than 50,000 bytes. They must also comply with forum decency rules. If you think your entry will be offensive or reported to the moderators, don't post it, even as a joke.100

About the SOTM Entry Process:

Every month, a new entry thread is created. Each month's entry thread is a central spot meant to give contestants a chance to create and improve their entries as well as their skills, in addition to providing them a place to post their official submissions.The thread is solely about helping contestants with entries, and as such these things will not be tolerated:1. Nonconstructive and negative criticism (if you truly dislike something about an entry, be polite and helpful)

2. Comments, questions, or complaints about General SOTM affairs

3. Flaming, trolling, and other uncivil behavior that breaks Forum RulesAnyone disrupting the thread will be asked to take it privately, to the SOTM Generic Discussion Thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showthread.php?t=63601), or if the offense is severe enough - reported to the moderators.

This Month's Entry Period::

This months entry period officially starts Wednesday, October 1st, 2008 and lasts until Friday, October 17th, 2008. Entries will be gathered and put up for voting on Sunday, October 19th, 2008. Voting will end on the following Sunday.

The due date ends at 11:59 (midnight basically) UTC/GMT. The polling will be up one day later after 11:59 (again, midnight). I will try to be as lenient as I can with last minute submissions but only slightly.

It is up to you as a contestant to know what your time zone is in relation to UTC/GMT. I cannot do this for you.

Headphones are OK.

(Of course they can be used to listen to "inspirational" speeches by Margaret Thatcher as well as music, but it's a bit beyond the point of exclusivity I want to take it.):heh:

Any object related to either producing or listening to music is OK, be that stereo equipment, instruments, batons etc. I'd allow even pen and paper if it's evident in the entry that they're used to write music.

Since you had give me C&C,

I'd probaly take away that out glow around Kotomi since it's rather distracting on the left hand side. But on a second look I think it's from the background no? I'm not sure :heh: The musical notes are rather nice, but I think (don't mean to sound harsh) the moon *or whatever it is* seems to be a bit distracting for me. But then again I have a different eye remember? (the font colour issue :heh: )

Arg never realized i saved my sig format as jpeg instead of png.

Had to take out the transparency as it made the file size just too large and i had no luck optimizing it enough.

Overall, I think it's actually too dark (so I prefer the first version). It could do with some contrast and I agree with Rick that I'd like to see more focus on the violin. I love that you used purple though, I'm digging that color lately. I would also venture to say that the dimensions of the sig are too big for what's currently there, either work on the background or shrink it a bit. The text is also a bit hard to read.

I really like what you've started here, but the major thing that bothered me is the mismatch of the render and background. The colors are great, but the styles are different. The render seems hand-drawn/painted and the background is sharp.

Great idea! As of now the sig is flat, very flat. I like all the different action going on in it, but I don't really see any depth. The lighting also seems very muted - intentional probably?

Again here, I don't think the render and background really jive well together. I also wince at the font used, it draws my attention away from where the focal point should be. Like the sig done by Sweetie, it'd be fun to see a bit more contrast, ie more colors than just strictly purple.

As stated before, it'd be good if you befriended the splice tool! The animation is too fast and I'll echo again, the render needs to blend in better with the rest of the piece. I'd start with first cleaning up the render a bit (it looks a little pixelated) and then complementing it with a suitable background/theme. It'd also be nice to see what other text you could substitute instead of your name that would represent the theme nicely.

Very pretty colors and the sig has a nice calm feel. One question I have is: What's up with the blurry whiteness smack-dab in the middle of the sig and to the left of the render? It creates a feeling that there's something lacking. I look forward to seeing what revisions you come up with!

The animation is fine, if a little fast. But the splice tool would greatly enhance the quality of the signature. Right now the signature is a little empty and washed out, and the entire image being a gif hurts that.

I think a way to improve the animation is to make the bars move up and down at different times. It'll be more realistic since the bars don't usually go up and down at the same time and it won't make it look as jerky.

And a quick question....does the musical object have to be in the render or is it okay to have a render and put something music related in the bg?

As long as the focus is equal there's no problem. Ichigo-Sora did this by placing a guitar in the hands of a render that didn't have one. Frailty made it appear that the render was sitting in front of a piano. That sort of thing is acceptable.

Don't worry about rushing. At the minimum, everyone has two weeks to work on signatures. As I mentioned in the opening posts, I may extend it to three weeks if I feel more time will help people get their entries just right. ;)

IMO, this pic makes me think of music, but it doesn't clearly show it's music. It does show the DJ and numerous equipment but...

It boils down to personal opinion. Text will be added, signyfying the group, which is a psychedelic trance group. However, I do not know if it qualifies. Want your opinion on this before I get to work.

@KiNA - Well I know Soul plays the piano silly, I just don't remember his piano looking that realistic! :p I haven't visited the image thread in a bit and haven't had the time to watch any anime in weeks so I'm out of the loop as far as images go....was just using it as an example for how to represent both the instrument and the character. ;)

@AX - Hmm. I'd have to wonder how clear the focus would be once the image is smaller. Real life images are allowed, but that particular picture is kind of dark.

I've tried the same bold layout with a different image and colour and even managed to keep the curved edges without losing to much quality when i optimized it.

Drake - I think both of them look good, but I have to honestly say I still lean towards the original blue just because I like the render better. I might change my mind if the red one were fixed a little because as of now the render is a bit blurry, especially around her face.

AffiX - looks good! I love that particular render, I have it, just haven't gotten around to doing anything with it >.<

PG - also another render that I really like. My only thing with it is that the way it is now, I'm reading it "listening music." Are they supposed to be separate phrases like "listening" and then "music," or are you aiming more for "listening TO music?"

You could fix up that light below the render. Its color doesn't match the scheme of the background. Also don't worry about not having animated sigs.. I prefer static sigs because it leaves you room to add filters, distortions, and overall depth. Not saying that an animated sig can do it too.. but a static can do it better.

Well, in those kind of amplificators, the bars alway go up or down, I leaved them at diferent heigth though

Evil Rick, How about making the bar animation in 4 separate slices with different frame delays, if you use delays that are not dividable by each other it'd make it almost random.

I conciderated that, but if we leave the bars at diferent time frames, they'll eventually start to go ones up, and the others down, as I said, in the amplificators, the bars always go up or down

well, that's a very colorfull sig, indeed indeed, I really like the pop-up style that you gave to the render, nice work there ;)

@Ratche: Could I advise you to make a border? It might be due to my personal preference but as it is now, it cuts off against nothing and makes it looks strange for lack of better words.
You could also, I don't know, but the vectors you used is a bit blurry. If you did them yourself or used a brush/render don't matter but I think it would look even better if they were sharp and not blurry.
Other than that, a nice sig with fitting design and text. Good luck.

god dayum. green, purple and yellow glowing orbs, really attractive. the splatter effect behind the render really blends in well with the vector buildings, as well as the c4d bg. as for the color combo, just perfect. and for the bad parts: some rough parts on the hands. splatter brushes seems a lil blurred, (though its inevitable since splatter brushes are naturally... like... really HUGE) im not feeling the brown ripples on the red side of the cap, and maybe just decrease some of the spatter on the hair. perhaps smudge the edges of the render a bit? outwards though, so u wouldnt lose the outline. a bit more shading would help.

i really like it though. its too sexy to be scrapped. right now, ur only opponents are those crazed fan girls who choose cute chibi characters or some pretty gal with a guitar instead. boo!!

as for the text, im not so sure how it would turn out, but maybe try using the greenish-brownish color u used and just connect the text to an area sharing the same color to make it look solid, or embed it on the white part of the buildings(space might be a bit too small though), either or. if that doesnt work, maybe just do plain white text in the background, smudge it a lil bit and voila.

i hope i did more helping than babbling; but really though, the overall look of the signature is just awesome. might've gone overboard with pointing out the minor errors, sumimasen D=.

Yeah ill fixed that up. Im might also completly start from square root one. Im lacking some good c4ds so ill hunt some down. I also need to learn cropping i just got some animation ideas. Hopefully It doesnt kill the sig.

@reN simplicity is best if your gonna for the ipod theme. Just make it easier to see the vectors.

Im so mad right now....ok question and since it has to do with sotm Im asking it here. Worked this morning on my entry, had a decent first draft going, was in IR actually trying my hand at animation. Got it to where I liked it, saved it optimized, closed the orginal copy (kicking myself right now...) when I clicked on the now saved file to see how big it was for some reason IR saved it as greyscale, there is no color and I have no idea why since as I was working on it, all the color was there. What did I do and how can I fix it since I really dont want to go back and redo the animation...
Ive saved all sorts of gifs to IR and never had to take out the color...

mmm... idk. the text just doesnt fit the image. yeah sure its easier to read but it sorta looks more like pop up text on an advertisement. try using a solid color that stands out most in the palette. font should give a similar expression as to what the sig is all about: "Ethereal Melody". i personally dont like drop shadows and semi-transparent text, but usually, when theres something's glowing in an image, i'd prefer using a faint outer glow.

overall appearance is perfect, its just the text thats bugging me. gj and gl.

Yeah, I recognised that from Skyfall's sig :heh:

i like the burning effect on v1 but i also prefer the brightness of the render + the right border of v3 as well. if possible, erase some of the brushed parts esp. the ones overlapping the keys of the piano. try randomizing the light/dark spots to give it more depth. some more contrast + sharpness will bring out the black a bit more. also, try experimenting with the text; 'Frailty' is ok, but im not feeling the 'Soul Eater'. id like to see the text blend in, like its originally a part of the picture, but still easy to read. burning effect on the left is appealing, luv it.

Right was a little on the bored side this afternoon so i made a few adjustments to the brightness and had a go at adding a little beat animation to the light on the head headphones.

Didnt really turn quite how i would of liked and i lost some quality changing it to gif but what do you guys think?

The splatter seems out of place, and it's difficult to see the musical object (I'm guessing it's a microphone?). The right side could use work, as you already noted. ;)

Why not put text in that top left corner? Try a simple text, and increase opacity so that it doesn't jump out and detract from the dreamy quality.

Try putting the text near the focal point. My reccomendation is next to the guitar. Tilted and positioned bottom-right to the guitar.

i tried to bring down the darkness a lil bit and set the focus more on the guitar. although on v3, im expecting to reveal her face a bit more. i also assume not everyone's feeling the 'fire' effect on her hands, as it roughs the image altogether, so yeah i'll lessen it a lil bit. c&c pweeze.

Nice! Text is great, the style is good. I'm not sure how I feel about her being more of a background object but the signature as a whole looks great.
