As Klash has just informed me, the episode has about 20+ hours to go before it's scheduled airing time. I'll have this thread closed until we near the countdown in hopes to curve down the noise:signal post ratio. It's a measure that is necessary to improve the quality of the discussion.

edit: With about half an hour to go for the episode to air, the thread is now open for business. Any idle chit-chat post will be deleted.

Considering the possible spoiler fest due of the source material and the expected reactions for the second season, we will follow the same guideline we used for Code Geass.

Anyone who posts spoilers that should not be posted outside of the spoiler thread will be granted a very special 1 day ban infraction.
Any repeated case will grant the usual "spoiler infraction" which will result into the 3 days ban. Also, any countdown and completely idle chit chat (such like "first!" "can't wait the subs!!" etc) might lead to the same result.

It has been very clear that we must use severe and proper infractions, in order to keep the threads clean and proper for discussion for everyone, instead of acting when it is too late.

...you know the mods are angry when the first three posts in what is supposed to be a potentially popular thread are posted by them, telling everyone "the whole freakin' lot of you better obey the rules.....or else." :uhoh:

Well. I've been waiting for this for months on end now, and it's so cool it's starting already. Probably won't get to watching this for another 20 hours though, since I already have plans for the night. :(

So, I'm watching it live, and one thing I have to say is that the OP definately is different than what I was expecting. Very Lia-ish feel, and definately a much more invigorating one than last year. Now I'm going to get into specifics, so spoiler tag time!

I found it interesting how they used some of the scenes from the visual fan book that were meant to be supplemental fan service, like Nagisa in that black cape, and Nagisa with an umbrella. It stalled out on me, so I didn't see much more than that. But it is definately a Nagisa-themed OP, contrary to the illusionary one I thought it would be

Aizu
2008-10-02, 12:21
Yeah, I'm watching it live too. It's nice. Opening is really great and you can find even some shots based on some older scans and visual fanbook ! Wow, great job as always, Kyoto ! I like this opening. Btw, looks like that there are also two new song remixes at least for this moment, but I can't say it exactly now until raw due the not really good audio quality.

Oh my, last shots before ending are amazing ! And ending is funny and lively enough.

ep.1 just ended!

- love the new OP;Toki wo Kizamu Uta by Lia.
- Tomoyo KICK!!
- Okazaki's antics is still made of WIN. He make Sunohara's life misreble.
- Tomoyo <33
- Misae and Yoshino known each other?
- note to self; Akio is a great pitcher but a bad hitter.
- Kyou; HOMERUN!
- TomoyaxTomoyo, Tomoyo; EPIC HOMERUN! hard hitter for a first timer.
- Kotomi the living calculator LOL!! she was trying to calculate her hit and predict the ball XD
- i feel sorry for Nagisa, AKio just let her down XD
- Tomoyo deciding to go for how a woman should hit.
- Lol at Yoshino that made me laugh out hard :heh: he hit it the 2nd time but got out bcoz of acting all cool and saying sth GAR. He cracks me up! No wonder Mei likes him.
- Sunohara sux.
- Tomoya's turn was breath taking. Luckily, he made the shot and their team won.
- love the ED <3

Tomoyo FTW!!

Btw, they added their own scenes or some different version of them from the game.

- Poor Sunohara.
- Baseball match was really nice.

9 out of 10 : Excellent.

yeah

but what made me like it even better was because of Yoshino

2008-10-02, 12:39
Hmm, yeah. Just watched it. It's a 'good' episode, but it feels very much unlike the first episode of a returning series or even a direct continuance from where it left off. There's like a feeling of 'blankness' in the episode, but otherwise, it's a great episode in which the charms of the characters show themselves nicely.

The OP was nicely Nagisa-centric, without completely forgetting most of others. I lol-ed though at the fact Ryou's not there, despite her larger ease at some things. It's good to see that Kotomi, Kyou and Tomoyo aren't out of the story... yet.

The pacing of the episode was typical Clannad in a good way. Take a point, get the characters, work their interaction magic, and went downhills from there. It helps that it's not the usual team, and thus feels fresher with other interactions and stuff like Akio-Tomoyo, etc etc.

And the winners of this episode goes to Yuusuke and Akio respectively. :D

The episode can do without the blatant melodramatics of Tomoya's last at-bat down right to the bgm, but meh. It's a good sign for his character anyway.

I'm personally disappointed that Sunohara is still in the blanks of Sanae = Nagisa's mom. It's just kinda awkward at this point. Small nitpicks, but otherwise, we'll see where it goes next. Looks like Sunohara episode next... and the point of awkwardness.

Good episode. Some flaws here and there, but genuinely Clannad.

Let's see. usual little summary (a bit less awkward than before... I hope :heh:)

After Story Episode 1 (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2008/10/02/clannad-after-story-episode-1/)

As usual, very faithful to the original material, with some nice additions to match the whole context of the anime (Kotomi and Kouko, to say the least).
Nothing exactly outstanding, but very fun and heartwarming as usual. A very nice start.

Nice episode, and agreed, great new opening song.

Felt like it's just the next day after last episode of first season.

Because I'm too impatient to wait for the episode to be available and check this myself: Was the ending-theme also based on game-BGM? And if so, which one?

Klashikari
2008-10-02, 13:29
No, pretty much like the OP, it is completely original, sung by LIA as well, until I missed completely a remix CD that included it.
But as far as I know, it isn't based on any original VN BGM at all.

EDIT: I stand corrected (for the OP mention): the OP is based on 同じ高みへ, but I really can't identify any possible "source" for the ED.

Aizu

No, it isn't based on any BGM, it's completely a new track. Very nice track.

Damn you Key....you always WERE a smart one.
Please don't make such statement. Even if Key certainly get their share of cake with the anime, it is absolutely unrelated to them or even Kyoto Animation. This is quite the usual problem with BS-I/TBS as they are parent channels, so to give a proper "advantage" for BS-I watchers (as it isn't a free channel, unlike TBS, until I recall wrong), the scale of shows etc are different. (or to be more crude : it force people to get the fee for BS-I)

This problem is rather from the TV channels than the source/makers of the series.

...And then making the widescreen-version intentionally sub-par (bad colors) so people will have more of a reason to buy the DVDs, so they'll make even more money. From a marketing-POV, it's brilliant, but as a fan... Not so much. I can't get the DVDs before they're released in America anyway, so having to wait that long to see the show in its correct aspect-ratio AND with proper colors is pretty annoying. But I guess I shouldn't complain... After all, I'm not even supposed to SEE the show at all until it's out on DVD...

(Or, I could get the japanese DVDs, but honestly, those prices are just too high for me.)

Fuwaaa, the opening is good. Animation, song wise, everything from the opening is perfect. I love the part where you see Kyou riding on her bike.

Best part of the episode
Kotomi's calculation on how to hit the ball, she's one true human calculator

The ending song is better then Dango Daikazoku, but it feels slightly more of a typical ending animation then the dangos.

Another thing about the OP:

When it shows the characters, it's extremely interesting that they didn't highlight Fuuko and show her name. I really have to wonder why. Knowing the full story I'm trying to piece together a reason, but I can't come up with one

I find the op really... prophetic too.

This is really a sweet episode. For the first time, we see the greater cast connected together as the show begins to move beyond the nucleus 'family' of Tomoya and Nagisa and extends itself.

Can't wait to see the next episode.

Does this mean we might get more of Kyou's route as it does have "that scene"?

I gave it a 9 out of 10 since I loved the episode and found it to be excellent, but feel that I need to save the 10's for the inevitable occurrence of even better episodes once the story really gets going later on.

The OP is my favorite so far this season, and will likely continue to hold that honor. It's a little odd not to hear MagMell at the start of a CLANNAD episode, but the new song is a beautiful replacement. I love the focus of the visuals on Nagisa, since After Story is really all about her and Tomoya.

First episode starts out with the baseball route, which is plenty of lolz factors :D
It seems so nostalgic, seeing all the casts again. "Toki wo Kizamu Uta" fits really well for the feelings of After Story, while I think "Dango Daikazoku" is better than "Torch".
Overall: A pure comedy episode, but also heartwarming at the few last minutes. I'd give a 9/10, plus an extra point for the beginning of a new Clannad season, which makes it a 10/10. I believe this will become one of the best show this year if KyoAni play their cards right. =))

Well, there is another more interesting detail - still nowhere an x264 version of Clannad AS. I mean from sources, where all raws are coming from, if you know what I mean (you obviously should). That can delay a bit some fansubbers.

Or they will release divx version faster (if they are releasing also this versions too) or simply re-encode it to x264. Anything is not so nice anyway.

Here is my extremely short review of the first episode:

Opening: It's awesome. Also, Fuko was in it for about half a second, which propably means that she WILL appear in this season too, even though she apparently wasn't listed in the cast on the homepage.

Episode itself: It was pretty good. I especially liked Kotomi's super-advanced calculations for how to hit a ball, and the following dialogue:
Tomoyo: So, what did you want?
Tomoya: It seems like Sunohara wants to do something perverted to you.
*Sunohara is kicked into a wall... Again.*

Ending: Not bad. It's better than Dango Daikazoku, at least.

It seems that I'm the only one who knows that the start of the Yuusuke's speech after he hit the baseball is the legendary line uttered by Nitta in Touch Movie #2 when he sent Uesugi Tatsuya's imitation Kazuya pitch to the behind the centerfield scoreboard. I feel old...

Great opening episode for 2nd serie, after all the mechas drama and love drama and melodrama from CG and Macross, i feel somehow relieved for a not so much brain stress serie.

anyway just finished ep1, great episode overall:DTomoyo: So, what did you want?
Tomoya: It seems like Sunohara wants to do something perverted to you.
*Sunohara is kicked into a wall... Again.*lol... here we are with a brand new season 2, 5 minutes into the first epsiode, and sunohara gets beaten up already:heh: thats when you think "yup, this is definitely clannad i'm watching and not something else"

found it funny in the scene where tomoya convinces yoshino to play for them, with his ballsh*t story... all three of them actually believed it:heh:

did anyone notice this: go watch the part where mei was batting again, somewhere at around 19min50sec (zero-raws version)... :twitch:lol, was she even taking it serious:heh:
when i first saw nagisa in the helmet, she reminded me of mikuru-chan (suzumiya haruhi) in the helmet:p

btw, is it just me... or did misae-san seem hotter than usual in this episode?:naughty:
sanae-san is still a yummy looking MILF:D... BANZAI!!!

EDIT: forgot to mention... did anyone else find that kotomi's first line (in the club room) didn't quite sound like kotomi? what happened there? did mamiko start her engines a little late getting into 'kotomi mode' or something? ...or is it just my ears f*cking with me?

With the episode out and in full viewing. I won't be posting in spoiler tags. If you came into this thread, then you should've watched the episode already.

This is a good first episode for a new season of a returning series. Pacing was good, tho, I had hope they would've done the other side-story before the baseball one. It would've been a better follow-up for this episode.

What probably intrigues the many of us (that had play the game) is the OP. Seems KyoAni is going to be using a lot of original work and materials they didn't get to use in the first season before heading into Nagisa AS arc. Using OG material isn't a bad thing, since I really enjoyed this episode with the way it turned out. It's great seeing it being done on a different perspective than from the game's point of view, but still remain faithful to the game's overall feel and story branching. I hope they keep it up and don't disappoint.

Another note to add is, the OP share a similar format to Air OP.

I wonder if the ED has any hidden message, if it's played backwards from end to start. o.O -So we would see Tomoya and the others walk forward, instead of backwards.

ep.1 just ended!

Tomoyo FTW!!

Just to correct you there. Akio is actually a great hitter as well. In the snip where he wasn't able to hit the ball is not because he sucked. It's because the pitcher intentionally walked him. Thanks to Tomoyo, hitting a grand slam, scoring 4 pts for the team.

The new opening theme is really awesome, a lot better than the previous one.
Same with the ending which is really nice.

About the episode. I couldn't make because of big ROTFL when Yuusuke was giving his reflections after each ball. XD

Also Kotomi-chan as a living calculator totally smashed me.
Ball trajectory, speed, wind power etc. XD

And one thing...
Sunohara you sux!

Thought it was an ok episode. The plot hasn't really gotten started so I can't judge the series' direction yet. This was basically a fun/fanservice episode, giving pretty much everyone almost equal screentime. I have to say though, that the OP is absolutely stunning. I liked Megumeru, but this was just beautiful. The ED is ok - I prefer Dango Daikazoku. Some characters I don't recognize were present too. New characters or perhaps I just forgot about them from the first season. I also noticed that there is an error in the ED. Kyou and Ryou are shown to both be wearing thigh-high socks, but Ryou does not usually wear them to that height. She usually only wears them to ankle-height IIRC.

Next episode appears to be about Sunohara, which I will greatly anticipate. Also in the preview, what is Tomoya parodying when he says "That's it!"? Sailor Moon?

After watching this, I have to say, Kyoani is a genius. The idea never crossed my mind of how to bridge the seasons together, and I thought that just jumping straight into a route would seem kind of strange. Baseball route! How stupid of me! This was the perfect link for the two seasons, and it's going to create quite an amazing backdrop to the future.

I loved Kotomi-chan's manipulation. If the ball lowering it's angle 40 degrees is 63 percent and the ball is 400 mm and *Insert more complicated stuff here*... I might hit it!

I'm also glad that even when trying to get a filler episode so as to not hit us hard all at once, they stay true to the game.

Next episode: False love? I'm liking the sounds of 24 episodes now.

10/10 for being genius.

As stated by our guidelines, spoiler tags DON'T cut it for being suitable for such threads. Spoiler tags are actually too often used as excuse to post recklessly, despite these are rarely tagged properly or well used.

This is the reason we don't allow ANY kind of spoilers, being subtle hint or under tags. Just leave episode threads free of these, it will be for the best.

EDIT: Please do NOT MENTION characters that didn't even appear yet in the anime series. Even if you don't explain who they are, it is potent enough to reveal things that aren't shown yet.

three things
1)the ep sent me from a "code geass mecha anime kicking ass and taking names" mindframe right back to the clannad mind frame in 24 minuts
as imersive as it comes
2)i love the new OP beyond anything i have ever expected (i was thinking that it would suck since i liked megumaru so much) i actually had a tear in my i during the end of it (the isumademo oboeteru part)
3)i loved the way nagisa was kinda looking at tomoya when he was helping tomoyo, i hope this gets explored during the show since nagisa and tomoyo have been alternating in my fav clannad girl list for a while now
nagisa is sweet beyond compare and was my fav during the entire first season
but tomoyo has a certain charm that extends beyond the standard action girl level and the OVA made me really love her
i hope they mannaged to incorporate some of the tomoyo after into this one (tomoya hooking up with tomoyo for a short while before going back to nagisa)

Was looking forward to whether they'll come up with a new OP, and was not disappointed in the tune paying homage to the original song it was adapted from.

Was pleasantly surprised to find this series starting off with the "Baseball Route", with Kotomi standing in for Fuuko for obvious reasons. The baseball game serves its purpose well by reintroducing everyone after the interval. In fact, one could just watch this right after watching episode 23 of the first series and won't even feel like anything's gone missing.

We finally get to see the side of Yoshino we never knew. lol

I'm going to need time for the ED to grow on me.

Here's the list of the parade of characters walking from the last person to the first, as far as I can recognize:

1. Koumura - The old teacher
2. Sanae-san
3. Akio
4. ??? <--- I have an idea who this is now, but revealing it now risks the wrath of the mods. (Hint: all characters next to each other are related in some way or another. )
5. Yukine
6. Sunohara
7. Mei
8. Misae-san
9. Misae-san's cat
10. Tomoyo
11. Takafumi - Tomoyo's little brother (seen briefly in flashback in ep 18)
12. Yoshino
13. Kouko-san
14. Sugisaka - Of the Chorus Club
15. Nishina - Of the Chorus Club
16. Kotomi's guardian
17. Kotomi
18. Botan
19. Ryou
20. Kyou
21. Nagisa
22. Tomoya

Fuuko's notably absent from this parade for obvious reasons, so is another character, unfortunately.

Ironically enough it seems that the very usual problem for listing the characters in the ending won't affect your post since it doesn't show the "non yet appeared character name" :heh:

just 2 quick corrections: it is not fuuko, but indeed Yukine. The character behind her has not appeared yet, so it will be kept for later, perhaps.
Also, Tomoyo's brother's name is Takafumi, not Fumihiko.

As far as I know, it is the usual problem with Key being extremely conservative with their royalties etc.
Since Kanon and Air had their major share of original BGM directly from their respective game, I assume that they want to force people to buy the original game OST, even if they are not exactly in big stocks nowadays.

Hmm? Fuuko is in the parade, but not Yukine. You mean to say she might be added in if the story involves her later on?

Edit: Nevermind, I noticed the ahoge on her head. That's Yukine indeed. My bad.

Actually, I meant the opposite.
Yukine IS in the parade, but Fuuko is nowhere to be seen.

The girl design is not really like Fuuko's, considering she isn't "short" enough, and got long hair with 2 thick strands of hair on her shoulders, and her characteristic ahoge.

as for the "later in the show", I mean the guy who is behind her, that have yet made an appearance in the show. He "might" be added later on, but considering the ED, they will most likely do that.

I love the episode. This and Toradora I'm definitely watching this season.

But, this episode was perfectly paced and enjoyable.
That baseball match and Akio's monologue kept me smiling and laughing the entire time. Let's not forget Kotomi's over-analyzing the movement of the baseball and calculating her posture and how hard to hit it. XD

Of course, the animation visuals are absolutely stellar. No noticeable drop in quality. Every frame and art was consistent. I wish a lot more animes were like this.

Oh! The opening song I love it so much already. Has anyone noticed that for the main characters namely Nagisa, Kotomi, Tomoyo, and Kyou, they showed both their present and future selves?

It seems they're hinting at what's to come in this series, with a lot of it focusing on Nagisa of course.

Wow, that was an excellent start to the season. Plenty of laughs were had by all, and it's good to see much of the cast back again.

This episode was quite effective at picking up from where things left off. For a lot of shows, the first episode of a new season is a tricky one, as you must strike a balance between showing new or entertaining things and remind your audience about all that happened last season. At either extreme, you risk either boring long-time faithfuls with an episode of flashbacks and repeated exposition, or alienating casual viewers who don't remember all the intricacies of the plot. Clannad ~After Story~ seems to have pulled this off quite well, though. The faithful are treated to a hilarious story that lets the ensemble shine, while the casual are gradually reminded of each character's backstory, circumstances, and quirks, as well as the main plotlines of the show, such as Nagisa and Tomoya's relationship and Tomoya's enmity towards his father.

I especially enjoyed how each character acted during the baseball game was a natural outpouring of what we already know about their personality, which serves to solidify each character in the minds of those who are just tuning in after a long break from Clannad. We got to see Tomoyo's dichotomy of hardcore force and feminine grace, Yusuke's flair for the dramatic, Akio's child-like hot-bloodedness, and Kotomi's innocent yet shockingly analytical mind. It may have been a long time since we've seen these characters, but right now I feel quite comfortable with each of them, as if it hasn't been so long at all since the show ended last March.

Looking forward to the rest of an enjoyable series.

Just to correct you there. Akio is actually a great hitter as well. In the snip where he wasn't able to hit the ball is not because he sucked. It's because the pitcher intentionally walked him.

One more thing that I've got to say about the episode...

I really loved the bit near the end when it came down to Tomoya at bat, when they shifted to the team dinner that night. At first, I thought they just weren't going to show the conclusion to the baseball game, and was a bit disappointed at that. But then I realized that as the characters were all cheerfully having dinner together, it occured to me that I couldn't really say for sure whether they had won or lost yet, until the very end when Akio declared a toast and sync'd the sound of the glasses with Tomoya's victory hit. Before that scene, I could still conceivably imagine that this group of young men and women would be close enough to enjoy their time with one another regardless of the results of a silly little game. What was important wasn't whether or not Tomoya had won the game; after all, there was little more than Akio's pride running on the outcome of that match. Rather, Tomoya himself had already won in a sense; compare the first episode of this season to that of the first season. We've gone from Tomoya being completely alone and apathetic in a world that he hates, to being surrounded by friends and companions in a loving home. The team's dinner together helped put everything in perspective for me; despite the hilarity that was the baseball match, it still didn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. Thus, when the episode shifted back to Tomoya hitting the ball for the win, the whole thing felt rather anti-climatic for me. Which was perfectly fine, as I had already seen what I wanted to see.

Also, compare this game-winning play by Tomoya to the one from the basketball game in episode 16 of last season. While they share lots of similarities, there were a few notable differences. The basketball game scene was introspective, with Tomoya lamenting over himself before being snapped back by Nagisa. The baseball scene, on the other hand, focused on those around him, which highlights just how much has changed since then for him.

So yeah, even in the midst of a rather light-hearted episode, I really appreciate some of the nuiances that can be gleaned from it. Maybe I'm thinking too much about it, but it's the mere possibility of minor yet fascinating things like this that keeps me interested in a show.

A slow start, but they managed to make baseball seem fun (psssst....I think it was the girl factor ;) ), although not quite Touch level fun. The animation made excellent use of varying shades of orange as well. Blue made a strong case for itself, but couldn't quite match up.

I'm going to break from other people and say that I have about the same opinion of the new opening as I did of the old one in that it feels like a Visual Novel opening. It works, don't get me wrong, but I wish they had gotten a touch more creative and tried something a little new with this season. Overall the episode had that same old Clannad antics feel to me, but since this show isn't a plot driven story I'm willing to forgive that a little as long as it doesn't carry to far into the series and become it's key driving factor for the next 12 or so episodes. Overall they did what they had to do in bridging the two halves of a longer storyline together and hopefully things get moving soon.

Also the less Sunohara (Will Ferrell) the better. The main character's "dude" best friend trope has never been quite so taxing. :eyespin:

Gave it an 7.5/10 rounded up to an 8/10.

edit: Almost forgot, thanks for making some use of my favourite character there. I'm sure people have figured out who it is by now and not that I'm overly worried if it breaks from the game canon a little of course. In fact I'd encourage it to break from the game a little here and there and hope it happens more often for the added surprise factor for people that have already memorized the entire game a few times. Not where it's critical to the story of course, but in minor areas.

Episode 1

-I love how Nagisa is now so used to call Tomoya, Tomoya-kun. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi00.gif

-Love the opening! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi01.gifThe images and the song are both beautiful! And the song (the lyrics) is so fitting for the After Story.

-Love how Akio-san is so accepting of Tomoya being Nagisa’s “guy” that he even asks favors from him now. :)

-Sunohara is still as hilarious as always. :D The Yoshino call was priceless! :heh:

-Tomoya is still great at coming up with the best made up stories! :D

-I like how Nagisa is trying to help Tomoya with the relationship with his father, but judging by Tomoya’s reaction, it was too soon to ask him to meet with his father.

-So Mei-chan is a big fan of Yoshino. Her reaction when she saw him was so cute!! :)

-The scene when Tomoyo said “I’m sorry. I lost the ball” was so cute!!! http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i255/tele5/smiley/wakuwaku.gif

-Poor Akio-san!!! :upset: That must have hurt a lot!!

-That pitcher change was so unexpected! I liked it so much! :)

-Kotomi is a genius indeed! :heh:

-Yoshino’s speech was priceless! :heh: The best part was when he was informed he was out the first time and when he asked for a time-out the second time. :D

-I’m really curios about the request that Mei-chan made to Nagisa. I wonder what it was.http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i255/tele5/smiley/huh1.gif

-Tomoya giving the victory to the team was awesome! I loved that scene!http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i255/tele5/smiley/onegai.gif

10/10 for me. Highlights of the episode:

Yuusuke was simply hilarious with both his speeches, especially how he called time out the second time around.

"He wants to do something perverted to you" - Tomoya followed by Tomoyo's trademark kick

Tomoya's story about Sunohara looking up to Yuusuke and everyone there believing it.

Akio referring to Sanae's bread

Kotomi's calculations

Akio's reaction after breaking a window right before the opening theme

And I found it sweet how they ended it with everyone eating dinner together, celebrating the victory then having the sound of the glass sync with Tomoya hitting the baseball.

This episode was nostalgic more than anything. The way Tomoya makes up his stories, Tomoyo's kick, Kotomi's genius, Garkio, it simple had that "Clannad" feel to it.

Tomoyo 1 second kicking Sunohara when Okazaki said he wanted to do something perverted was hilarious. Yoshino giving the speech was also hillarious but he only suceeded the second time since he got an out before finishing the first time :heh: Kotomi's calculation of the ball etc. was something i DID NOT expect though I think she spent too much time calculating? :p Of course we still can see Okazaki's usual "pranks" which I'll never get tired of

That was an excellent way to start things off by getting the entire gang together. Watching the events on screen just felt like a reunion of sorts and it was great just letting the characters' personalities bounce off of each other. Execution of the comedy was also good and there weren't any slow moments at all as this episode grabs you from the get-go. No complaints from my end!

It was essentially a filler episode, but an entertaining one. Certainly Yoshino Yuusuke stole the show for me, with his backhanded melodramatic lamp-shading, the type of which is almost a trademark of Ishihara's sense of humour.

The motley baseball team gave me big Suzumiya Haruhi vibes. Most of it was pretty facetious, but there were little glimpses of things under the surface that play into Clannad's main set of themes. Mirrinus has already pointed most of them out more eloquently than I care to try.

Edit: I completely forgot about this, but I found it interesting that Misae, Ibuki-sensei and Yuusuke share some sort of past. I haven't played very far into the game (I'm certainly no where near After Story), but from that scene, I started to speculate that maybe there are some parallels in their past that resembles some of the stuff going on with the characters of Tomoya's generation. Maybe there are parallels between the way the relationships panned out between Misae, Ibuki-sensei and Yuusuke and, I don't know, I'm speculating here, possibly Tomoyo, Nagisa and Tomoya. I don't want to know if I'm close or not, it just strikes me as a plausible possibility... and an interesting pattern in the story if it is.

Hah, I loved this episode, it was great, light and funny. But still had a few hints about the core of the show.

Yoshino and his speeches were hilarious, and Kotomi made me giggle with her calculations. Poor Tomoyo, trying to be a 'regular' girl and just gives up in the end and belts the ball. So will these characters who didn't have much screen time in S1 be getting more in S2 I wonder? :o

I "think" I saw her in the OP, hugging a "character that didn't get its proper appearance yet":heh:

i meant as a nomral cast, like the ones where she pops up every now and then to unintentionally disturb a 'locked-in-a-gym' kinda scenario :heh:

I had high expectations for this series (since I simply loved the first one way too much) and I am in a bit of disbelief as to how well this first Episode shattered all of them. I thought it was really as to how Akio, Sanae, Misae, and Yuuske all got a good deal of screen time (Akio especially, coolest guy in that series, IMO). Overall, I just liked it (regardless as to how cheesy it was).

Also, poor, poor Sunohara.

The epic storyline loved by so many people has come back....I love this anime but OMFG the cheesyness in this first episode grahhh To much happyness and weird ass speaches over such weird things x.x

I agree, there were too many lines that popped out of no where that made the episode seem rather weird.

I also noticed that there is an error in the ED. Kyou and Ryou are shown to both be wearing thigh-high socks, but Ryou does not usually wear them to that height. She usually only wears them to ankle-height IIRC.lol, is this a hint that ryou's on her way to becoming tsundere later in the series:heh:

Rewatching the episode, noticed in the victory dinner, Mei whispered something into Nagisa's ear. That would most likely lead into something concerning Sunohara, as can be seen in the preview. This would thread the story nicely into the "Sunoharas Route" side story.

I was just going to mention this :heh:

It was quite a nice starting episode...I had a few chuckles out of some of the scenes. Though rather than Haruhi, this whole baseball ep reminded me of Little Busters

Tomoyo doing the orz made my day too ^^

Looking at what earlier posters had drawn about the contrast in Tomoya's disposition between the first episode of the first story and AS, I just realised that the producers had used the same music during the corresponding scenes as well. Really nice touch there, IMHO, especially since the name of the track is named 町、時の流れ、人, which I think translates to The Town, the Passage of Time, and the People (maybe it might not be plural in this context though).

1. Misae: Don't call a *Car Horn*-year-old lady with a -chan attached to her name!
2. Yuusuke: Thanks for the encore!
Mods: I figured that the above would be fine since nothing has been spoiled about the actual episode and the lines won't appear ever again, but if they aren't, do what you have to.

I say 8/10 because it was a fun, lighthearted first episode, very funny and enjoyable. But there doesn't seem to be any kind of plot or arc yet, and from the looks of the next ep, there won't be one their either.

It was a fun episode, but I'll agree it had it's bit of cheese.
Yuusuke was funny, and even though I've played this in the game, it still managed to make me laugh. (And I rewatched that a few times too)

But I wouldnt let it shatter your expectations XD This IS just a get to knowing everyone episode again.

So I gave it an 8/10. Good, but not the best. The best is to come.

And is that the Siblings arc I see. (would this be a spoiler? D:) It was one of my all time favorites <3

That was a good opening episode, imo. I admire the creators how they can make such a thing like baseball into a sad touching moment.
The scene I like the best of ep1 was the "Kotomi, scientists in action". Tomoyo Kick was great too though.
But I hope the main plot will start in 3 episodes, at most.

Been waiting ever since the Tomoyo After OVA, and it didn't disappoint, save for the fact I'd have liked a more upbeat ED.

Rewatched the episode again and I cannot get over how well animated this series is compared to other animes I've seen last season. There is so much detail and nuances in each scene like folds of the clothing and how the hair flows and moves. The lighting and shadow and facial expressions were just as impressive.

It's why I love the opening animation so far. The way the camera would pan out of the van with Tomoya or the camera zooming into Kyou on the moped.

I love it. I can't wait for the OP single to come out. I had to rip the audio out of the episode into an MP3 so I can play it in iTunes. XD

For me, Tomoyo was my favorite in this episode with Nagisa coming in second.

Favorite quote from Tomoyo <3
"Sorry. I made us lose the ball."

Oh, let's not forget Kyou dancing on first base after her first hit.

Haven't gone through the whole thread so this has most likely been mentioned before but....

It stroke me as curious how much they drill the point about the game being important to the town yet, when the game begins, you can't see a soul (outside the obvious ones) actually watching or caring about the actual game.

A bit of a crowd wouldn't have hurted there KyoAni. :p

WOW I LOVE THIS EPISODE.

At first, I was kind of surprised that it was not in widescreen. But I guess there's nothing surprising about that.

Reason why I love this episode:
It starts off CLANNAD really strongly: with action, comedy, story, character development, and a hint of a more serious side. The directing was phenomenal. The artwork was inconsistent at times, however. Music was VERY fitting. The MAIN reason why I love this episode though: it made me laugh literally every minute. When watching it, I laughed, paused, and rewound it. Maybe I repeated it a couple of times. I was never this entertained watching something ever. Maybe a few movies and shows were close, but this is definitely my favourite.

Can I expect a widescreen release in 2 weeks? As they have done with the first season?

@ destiny4everlove:

*shameless copy paste that I posted on Riuva*

A squeeze is a baseball maneuver that makes use of a sacrificial bunt so that the runner on the third base can score.

When it is Nagisa’s turn, Kyou was on the third base, hence Akio “suggests” Nagisa to do a simple bunt that won’t do anything good (though even a normal swing would be no good as demonstrated XD) but that might give the opportunity for Kyou to score.

When Tomoya is doing his bunt for Mei, that is not a squeeze, but rather a "sacrificial bunt", as Mei is on the first base, not the third one. It is "kinda" the same, but the squeeze term is far more specific.

In the last Inning, Akio “forbids” Tomoya to do a squeeze as since it is the last inning with 2 outs, it would be way too obvious for the opposing team that the furukawa bakers will attempt a squeeze (especially that Tomoya has been probably framed as a poor batter). Attempting a squeeze in such situation would be a suicide, especially that the runner on the third base is Nagisa, so she would be caught with ease.

I find certain aspects of this screenshot to be very... err... interesting.

What is Kyou and Kotomi's relationship? I mean, they're friends obviously, but are they particularly close friends now? For some reason I just think it'd be nice if they were.

In part because they're both good people who deserve to have good friends, but also in part because it's such a long way from where they were when they first met. Kyou pretty much outright rejected her when she was initially getting Tomoya to help her find friends, and even after a change of mind, she didn't really take Kotomi all too seriously.

If you squint and look at them from a certain direction, they, and they're entire relationship, somewhat reminds me a little of Hinagiku and Hamster from Hayate no Gotoku.

Watched the episode raw, probably will need to watch it again as i missed about a half of what was said.
So, looks like it was a light comedy. I thought they'd start at the funerals or something.
Poor pops - he surely got a heavy injury.
Also, as much as I tried to understand baseball rules I miserably fail at that. I even tried to read wikipedia on the matter. I know that if the batter can't hit the ball, the strike means an instant win. If he/she does hit the ball then they start to run around actively trying to catch the ball and then get to the bases. Something like that. But the scoring rules are beyond my comprehension. Sorry.
What is good is that Kyou's back. She makes my day.

I wonder if I'm not the only one who thinks Kotomi is just walking pair of tits.

I'd LIKE to hate on this show right now because I still think Nagisa should be hung over a pit of boiling acid from those cockroach antennae, but there's a part of me that has a tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny bit of respect for there actually being an honest to god established couple right from the get go.

Very tiny bit. Still I fully them expect to go about in NOT developing the relationship and end up running things into the ground in a mediocre fashion. Already in the first episode we're given a possible show of jealousy coming from Nagisa, but nothing to follow up on it with.

I'll keep watching, but god I fucking hate Nagisa so damn much.

Aaaaactually, this show will get several points more (at least from me) soon enough when fuuko actually interacts with "characters that didn't get its proper appearance yet" :heh:

On topic, I kinda love Kyou's line "Let Nagisa run home", of course it has its meaning in baseball, but I like letting my mind interpreted it on its own :heh:

This is a harem romantic story guy. There were 3 girls after him in the first season, and from the looks of it there's a good 5 or 6 at his beck and call. I will admit the series not being entirely generic though.

Please do not make such statements without properly understanding what the term means.
A harem genre would be a story with the male character being able to hook any of the female character and likewise, the main "vector" for the romance would be "who the guy will end with". While the first season "could" be considered as Harem sorta, ever since episode 18, it sealed its genre completely away from this category.

After Story will not delve about romance and back and forth at all, you are actually missing completely the point. Likewise, please understand this is not a harem romance story at all, especially from this point.

Yeah you're right, After Story isn't a harem romance (I hate having to even put those two words next to each other), I'll acknowledge that.

And the first season was definitely harem, you can't deny that, even when all knew very well he was going to end up with cockroach.

I think the fans should leave you alone for now since you already seem so determined to not to give this series a chance. Assumption is all well and good if it can be based on proper reasoning. Comparing season 1 with season 2 is way too early. I think your outburst will be more fitting if you wait at least 10 episodes and then say, the show is "harem."

I wasn't happy with season one as well. The entire series didn't need a whole 24 episodes to move on to the next stage of things. Nagisa still remains pretty undeveloped character. Her passive role also doesn't add much to her character. Her character is pretty boring, in fact. That said, season 1 established the show will revolve around Nagisa and Tomoya. What would be a "miracle" is that if you happen to be right, that this is another harem anime in disguise. And if you do happen to be right, I'll be with you bashing the show for all its worth.

Until then, stay in the observation mode! I'm sure you can already see how people here are taking to you. Those kind of conversation can be pretty disruptive and can lead to poor behavior. For me, I'll try to enjoy it.

Actually, talking about harems - new definition is really different from the old one. Now when we are talking about harem we mean something like Kanokon, Shuffle and so on. Clannad isn't really a harem, it has only a classical harem base with "one guy and a lot of girls", but is different in plot and idea.

personally i really dont think there is a bad choice to be had there
kyou is epic, easily the sexiest of the bunch, and her dere dere scenes make her awesomely sweet (locker room scene FTW)
tomoyo was a girl i didnt really get that attached to in the first season
till the OVA came out and i was totally inlove with her (almost to the point of how i was with nagisa after a whole season)
and nagisa was the first key female lead i totally fell inlove with ever (i prefered nayuki to ayu, and while i liked misuzu i still saw her as a girl rather then a love interest)
i came into clannad thinking tomoyo was going to be my fav
and nagisa won me over completely

It was essentially a filler episode, but an entertaining one. Certainly Yoshino Yuusuke stole the show for me, with his backhanded melodramatic lamp-shading, the type of which is almost a trademark of Ishihara's sense of humour.

I was wondering about those scenes. So was there any significance beyond this? (The director's style that you mentioned.) It all seemed to come kind of...out of left field. ;) I'll admit I don't remember him much from S1, though.

My qualm is that the first season is intended toward the game players, so they can relive those "paths" of these different set of characters. The relevant story actually starts taking shape from episode 18 and onward. Did we really need 17 episodes just to get to the core of the story? I'm not saying I didn't enjoy those episodes, but the answer still is , "heck no." My qualm is that I am not the intended target audience for the most part of the season 1. As a result, I can understand the frustration expressed by posters such as Master Chibi. To interrupt the flow of the story to satisfy the game players with these "paths" is what irks me about stories adapted from games and such. Those kind of story telling leaves the door open for misunderstanding. Character development isn't necessarily done only by sobs stories and the likes, but I'm sure you are already aware of that.

I'm cruel, but not to that extent where I'll generalize characters based on my own bias. I give myself more credit. :)

Evayo
2008-10-05, 19:08
Stories like these are all about the development of the characters. Tomoya doesn't just sulk in a corner for a couple minutes and then spring to his feet yelling "I want to be with you for the rest of my life, Nagisa!" He has to take baby steps. Crawl, walk, then run.

That being said, I have no problem with lengthy pacing and I feel like this season is going to throw a lot more at us than the first as Tomoya becomes more involved in those around him.

I see, and I understand where you come from, and your point is completely valid. My personal take of it is that previous chapters are within the theme CLANNAD tries to convey. True, its not part of the very core of the story, however it is pivotal in giving more strength to the resolution of the whole series.
