View Full Version : Characters who suffered the most in their childhoods

The one that comes up the most is Shinji from Evangelion, having been abandoned by his father and continually ignored even when he tries to reach out to him.. sure, he whines too much but if I had suffered the same trauma, I'd probably be like that too.
Karou from Ai Yori Aoshi: His parents are both dead and he was mistreated by his family's clan once they were gone
Kirika from Noir: Having her memory erased and being brainwashed into becoming an assasin
Souske from Full Metal Panic: being raised in a warzone environment where his life is constantly in danger and parents already dead.. imo, he copes with his situation the best out of all characters with really sucky childhoods mostly due to his natural military talent.
Most suffered childhood
Gaara from Naruto - i won't spoil it.
Youga from Condor Heroes - i won't spoil it either
Gunslinger Girls

 Ohh the girls from Naruturu...
 The sad thing about it, is that i can relate to that childhood... I have friends who go through "that" kind of pain... They havent done anything dramtict yet, but still :dots: they still go through the pain...

I'll second the vote for the girls from Narutaru, Akira and Hiro-chan specifically. I won't go into detail as not to spoil anything, but I'm sure people who've seen the show will attest to it.

- Gaara from Naruto : everyone should know what I'm talking about :heh:
- Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin : having yr parents die of cholera (or some other disease) and then seeing the family you live with and care for you get brutally murdered before your eyes can't be healthy
- Sagara from FMP : child soldier is no way to spend your childhood
- Kaoru from Ai Yori Aoshi (see it to know why)

I think its Urumi from GTO..
She's mentally ill and wants to kill/injure people.:heh:
It seems that in most anime series, there's almost one character who suffered a lot in their childhood so it's difficult to name them all. ^^;; I agree with Gaara... But if you look at the Naruto cast, almost all the characters have suffered.. Just in different ways. If you look at Naruto, everyone would avoid him and he felt really bad.. It's just that he didn't turn bad like Gaara did. x.x Same for a lot of the other characters.. ^^;;
But like I said... Even if you look at the popular series, there's characters who have suffered.. Even if you look at a series like Sailor Moon.. You have a character like Ami who was always alone because her parents were very busy.. You have Makoto; her parents died in a plane accident and she had a very traumatic experience with a guy she liked... And so on.

Gaara has a very sad childhood. He was constantly shunned and feared by the people of his village. His mother died as a sacrifice to him. He was alone, an insomniac, his uncle was ordered to kill him (The only person Gaara thought cared for him . . . ) , and there were attempts on his life ever since. Now if that isn't a sad childhood, I don't know what is.
Haku also has a horrible childhood. Being thought of as a monster, having his mother killed by his father, his father trying to kill him. Haku then had to kill his father and lived on the street as an orphan. That is heartbreaking . . .
Ed from Full Metal Alchemist. Having lost his mother and plagued with the guilt of his brother seems like it would be unbearable.
Mayu and Lucy from Elfen Lied
Been raped by her father and her mother slaps her when she tries to talk to her :upset: Ran away from home and lived on the streets :upset:
Lucy has far from pleasant childhood as well.
Hm... Fate from Nanoha comes to mind... she is completely devoted to her mother and obeys her fully just hoping that her mother would smile at her once, yet all she gets is cold words and leather whip, but she still keeps loving her mother :S
...Bleh, ill stop here - i bet i can name at least one character per two series i have watched.

Kouta from Elfen Lied was horribly tortured even if it for just a few moments.
Almost his entire family was killed in minutes in a very gory way, and it was all done by someone he thought to be his friend. He even subconsciously blocked out the memories in his later life.

May I suggest Johan from Monster?
While it may not seem obvious, the monster that he ended up becoming was all a result of all sorts of twisted psychological experiments by Franz Bonaparta to create the perfect "Monster". It takes a "perfect monster" to conceal all these suffering superbly and proceeds to bring darkness that he has seen to the world. Dr. Tenma merely extended the lifespan of the monster, but he did not create Johan.

I was surprised the Lieber twins weren't right at the top of this list. Anna didn't have a happy childhood, either. It's depressing that the scene at the desolate Czech border crossing represents hope to Johan and Anna.
She had her own dark experiences in the Red Rose Mansion and tried to kill her brother on, I believe, two separate occasions during their childhood. Despite that she's remarkably intact, much more so than Johan.
As for Narutaru,
I was shocked by the test-tube rape scene in Episode 11. I always wondered how Narutaru could possibly be considered a kids show. After Episode 11, I suspected that the creators of Narutaru must have only shown the first couple of episodes when they pitched the show to Kids Station, or else KS doesn't have a Standards & Practices department. I was very uncomfortable when my daughter watched that scene with me at age 12. I guess I'm a romantic, or else repressed, but I'd prefer that kids not be exposed to material like that until they're at least 14 or 15. It's sad if one of your earliest exposures to on-screen sexuality is a horrific, same-sex gang rape.

It's depressing that the scene at the desolate Czech border crossing represents hope to Johan and Anna.I'd imagine it was because the posts skipped ahead a year (due to the infamous forum crash) - and that year happens to coincide almost perfectly with Monster's airing. I definitely think both Liebers should probably qualify. Obviously a good portion of the Elfen Lied cast does as well.
EDIT: Actually (caught looking at your avatar again), Hare from Hare + Guu should probably qualify also. I mean, come on, Guu exists to screw Hare's life up. :)

Ahem...Seta Soujiro. My favorite character in all of anime.
Of course his sufferings did allow him to use one of the most awesome techniques in all of Kenshin.
*Gaara Konohamaru Itachi ( Sauckay's Brother Nuff Said ) and Naruto from Naruto
* Lucy from Elfen Lied
* Itachi Sauckay's Brother Nuff Said
* Shinji from Eva
* Kagura from Speed Grapher
Well, barring some really out-there childhoods featured in doujinshiii and such,
Satoshi and Satoko from Higurashi really had a hard time, and are a good mention.
The Narutaru examples are quite good too.
In erogames, one that kinda stuck with me for a long time was in Cross Channel:
From what I can gather, the main protagonist was apparently forced to wear girl's dresses and such, and I think he was abused whilst so as well.

Gotta give Guts from Berserk another vote.
Very minor spoilers from early volumes
The guy was born from the corpse of his mother, raised knowing only about war, blamed for the death of the woman who saved him, sold for the night by his father figure to another guy leading him to get butt raped. Then later he gets chased out of the group, fleeing for his life and falls off a cliff, somehow surviving only to get attacked by wolves five seconds later....DAMN! :twitch:
Hensel & Gretel from Black Lagoon?
Hansel & Gretel from black lagoon, too.

Ah crap, beat me to it. By a few hours. Damn.
You could probably throw Revy in there too no problem.
If manga is included, Rei from Mars had an almost laughably difficult childhood. Kira's wasn't easy either.
As for anime, Ginko from Mushishi didn't have it too easy. Neither did Watanuki from xxxHolic.
Tell me if this is just me.
I haven't seen all the animes listed, but seeing people list Shinji(Eva) and Sagara(FMP) on the same level as -any- mentioned character from Elfen Lied greatly makes me question the credibility of this thread as a whole.

Lots of anime series feature someone who had an unhappy childhood, but IMO Sana's six brothers from Innocent Venus would win a "worst childhood" contest hands down.
Sana and her brothers were the results of a genetic engineering project of a special military unit. The boys were dissected and had portions of their nervous systems implanted in powered armor suits in order to interface with and enhance the abilities of the suit's users. The remainder of their nervous systems are kept in tanks in a laboratory for future use. And the worst part? They still retain awareness of who they were and everything that was done to them. The memories of pain and terror carried in their nerve tissues are so strong that most people who try to use the armored suits are either driven insane or die from the stress. As a result, the ones who can use the suits are either certifiable psychopaths to begin with, or highly disciplined and controls individuals who are having their humanity slowly eaten away.

Well i can think of quit a number of characters who suffered (or are suffering)a horrific childhood.
IMO the worst cases i know about
- Gaare from Naruto (obvious)
- Wrath from Full Metal Alchemist (the Anime not the Manga)
- Johan Liebert from MONSTER
Add another point for Gaara..
Then there's also Sasuke..
This is an ibvious one....
The ppl from Elfen Lied. All of them except his cousin.
The most screwed up childhoods ever. No question about it.
Oh yeah how the hell could I forget..
That girl who had her hands..... *ahem*
Poor thing.. she had it the worst.. :'(

Who and what series are you referring to?
This is an ibvious one....
No, it's far from obvious imo. Kouta had a pretty horrible "accident" happen to him, but it only lasted for a few moments before his brain blanked the whole thing out. It is no fairy tale, but he didn't suffer for long.
In the same time there are characters who have been suffering ever since... let's take one not so obvious one - Misuzu from Air and let's have a look at her situation.
All her life she has spent alone. Due to some unknown cause(curse of the winged beings) she is unable to befriend anyone, because she has a breakdown each time she is about to become friends with any one. Her mother included. (And it is not her real mother, but her mother's sister - her mother died way back and her father didn't want her at that time so she ended up with her mother's sister)
Because of her strange sickness and some other factors she does not have a close relationship with her mother - they are simply living under the same roof. At school children wouldn't even talk to her much, because she is considered weird. And even if they would talk to her it is not like she can make any friends because it would cause her to break down.
Her mother has not even given her a birthday present on any of her birthdays. In fact they pretend such day does not exist. on her 16th birthday she gets to talk and play with Yukito for a bit and says that this is the happyest birthday she has ever had. Normaly she spends all her time alone playing cards with herself.
Yukito is the only person that she has that resembles a friend - but she still can not get too friendly with him or that causes her to break down. It gets even better - her sicknes becomes worse and she is getting weaker day after day. Yukito figures this has got to do something with him and tries to leave, but he can't ... when it looks like Misuzu is about to die he sacrifices his own life to gain some more time for Misuzu so that she can gain some happy memories.
Oh, but it gets better - her condition keeps getting worse to the pont she can not walk on her own. She is in pain all the time, but pretends that she is fine in front of her mother in order not to worry her. In the end she asks Haruko(her mother) to take her to the beach (because she saw children playing there and how fun it was)... there she gets out of her wheelchair and walks about 10 steps or so before collapsing, but she still says with a smile that she has reached her goal - to be happy once in her life... after that she dies in Harukos arms.
Nice life she had, didn't she? It is even better in Air the Movie imo - instead of breaking down when she gets too friendly with any one she feels pain whenever she has feelings for any one(love for her mother included)... Her life has been weaking for a long time now and the doctors have no idea what to do... and Misuzu knows about this.
Certainly does not help when she falls in love with Yukito. Later down the road her mother even beggs of Misuzu to hate her if that would help her to ease the pain... but Misuzu answers that she has finaly decided - that emotional pains hurts more than physical. At the end she meets the same fate - getting weaker and weaker by the day with Yukito and HAruko by her side untill we have the beach scene again where she dies in Yukito's and Haruko's arms.
Nice life this girl had, didn't she? I have no idea how she managed to cling on to her sanity or didn't commit a suicide.
Kouta from Elfen Lied does not come close to this level of suffering. Lucy might to a lesser extent, but none of them had to suffer for 16 years straight.

I would say that the diclonius children in Elfen Lied had about the worst childhoods. Test subjects that were treated worse than lab animals.

Rei.
As bad as Nana had it, she was the luckiest of the diclonius from the lab. All the others, including Lucy, died, while she ended up living a relatively normal life with people who loved her. As Mayu said, they were a family with Yuka as the mother, Kouta as the father, and her and Nana as the children. At the end of the manga she even got her "Papa" back.

Sonozaki Shion had it pretty bad. I guess, even though I didn't like her as much as the other Higurashi characters, I do pity her. I mean, it must really suck to be the "lesser" twin even though you're supposedly the "head" twin. Then being ignored and hated by the rest of the family. Nails! >.<

While Shion had a somewhat lesser situation than Mion did because of the two's mix up when they were younger, Shion herself didn't have a really bad childhood. While yes, she was shunned from the other members of her family, they still considered her and treated her like family. Mion, Kasai, and Akane always supported the other twin in and out of the limelight and Ohryo also cared about her, though she didn't show it as much. Her most tragic incident is probably the loss of Satoshi, which sparked her madness. She's not a character who suffered, but she's a tragic character because of all the things she does in Meakashi-hen and the realization she comes to at the very end and how she's sorry for being born.
That said, I like Shion a lot. She's an interesting character, to say the least.
I think Rika Furude has the more tragic past of the two, however. Living the same life over and over again...

while i agree that Misuzu from Air had a pretty messed up childhood... i don't agree about your comment towards elfen lied... first of all, the previous comment was not just targeted at Kouta, it was targeted at most of the characters from Elfen Lied.. secondly...
his family was freaken killed, in front of him no less... who the hell cares if it only took a few moments of his life, it doesn't change the fact that he'll never see his dad or sister again... and the fact that he had to block it out in order to cope only hightens the factor, whether it was murder or an "accident" as he remembered it, they are still DEAD, and i am sure he suffered plenty knowing they were... Kouta aside, the diclonius children were held captive and imprisoned & treated worst than animals, and tortured & experimented on for most of their lifes... and Mayu was molested by her stepfather, and her own mother didn't love or even care about her... and lets not forget that she was forced to run away and become homeless after that.... oh and where's her real father? (don't remember if it was mentioned, but one would assume he was either dead or didn't give rats ass about her) so yea, if u saw the anime... i think its pretty freaken obvious....
k thxs...

Nami and Nico Robin from One Piece
Allen Walker from D Gray Man
Rukia and Ichigo from Bleach
Lucy from Elfen Lied
Hansel and Gretel from Black Lagoon gets my vote.
Abused since young for child pornography, taught to kill their "victims", pretty much every bad thing that can happen had happened for em.
Elise Housen from Canvas 2-- had childhood trauma since the car accident that killed her parents whose deaths she herself witnessed
Mayu from Elfen Lied-- spent most of her childhood under sexual abuse by her stepfather.
Urumi Kanzaki from GTO- lived without her parents.
Hmm well I've only seen Elfen Lied I'd have to pick from there. I'd say Lucy. Because she spent most of it being abused by kids at school, and whenever she thought she's found someone she thought she loved they were always snatched away from her. Also when she killed Koutas sister and uncle she had to live witht he guilt all her life, as well as her childhood.
Dammit! How do I delete that post? I don't see anywhere I can. :s
I have to say gohan ron dbz,
his been left alone to survive in the wild at the age of 4.
The Elric Brothers from Full Metal Alchemist

I'd put up a vote for the Twins from Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage. Revy didn't have the happiest childhood either, but I think the twins had the worst...
Even Gaara comes in second to Hansel and Gretel
From Fruits basket almost all of them for example Kyou his dad left he and his mom because he was possed by the cat and his mom wouldn't let him go outside then his mom comitted suicide so the is sad
Momiji Sohma when he was born since he was possed by the rabbit her mother got really sick(emotionally)and decided to get her memory earased or atleast her having Momiji so his dad left him in the Sohma Main House and there he grew up
Yuki sohma since he was possed by the rat he was also with like asthma or something like that but he had to be with Akito and live there but he was closed in a room and being hit by Akito when he was really sick
lets no forget the others *complete silence*
Staying on the topic of Furuba I would say ....
Akito no wonder she is so bitter
I would add Ichise from Texhnolyze somewhere on the list.
Seening as Allen Walker is still "IN" his childhood and he keeps getting tortured to death I would say it is turning out kinda rough. There are things that were suggested to occur while he was with Cross as well, like when those big mean men came at Allen for Cross's debts. (what happend next isn't said but it is kinda scary)
A lot of main characters are still basically children, when you think about it.

Well, in Higurashi there are many sad destinies, Satoko Houjou, Rena Ryuuguu and Miyo Takano (!!) are the most miserable in my opinion.
Misaki Nakahara from Welcome to the NHK had it very hard, made me really sad.
Kouta and all the diclonius girls from Elfen Lied.
And back to the classics:
Asuka, Shinji and Rei from Evangelion.

Most of the main characters in One Piece had a very sad childhood, but among them the saddest were:
Nami:
Lived in poverty with her mother and sister, then watched her mother be killed in cold blood in front of her and then agreed to work for the man who killed her for several years in order to save her village
Chopper:
Was always mocked and ostracized by both human and animals because of his appearance. After he finally found a man who accepted him for what he is, he watched that man blown up to bits in front of him for trying to save the people who would condemn him to death
Franky:
Was an orphan until being taken in by a shipwright. Later that shipwright had to face the death sentence because the ships Franky himself had built were used for evil in a treacherous move. Then he tried to stop the train carrying that shipwright to jail and got most of his body destroyed in the process
Robin:
Was always alone and mocked by the other children because of her ability. The only people who acknowledged her were a group of archaeologists. Later, she finds her first true friend and gets reunited although briefly with her long lost mother, but almost immediately after, her home island gets obliterated by the marines, the archaeologists and her mother perish in the fire and she watches her first true friend get frozen to death. After that she is a wanted woman and is on the run for several years unable to find a place where she belongs.

^ Yeah One Piece characters do carry a lot of emotional baggage. I think Zoro's past was the saddest to me though.
I'd also like to mention Kohaku from Tsukihime. She was raped by her adoptive father and became so traumatized that she became an emotionless doll to keep from feeling pain.
As mentioned before, pretty much all the characters from Elfen Lied.
Tsugumi from Ever17 had a pretty crappy childhood. Spending it locked up in a facility as a lab rat. Cal from Phantom of Inferno. The person who was taking care of her is accidentally killed in a moment of what seems to be gang violence. She is then taken in by Reiji, falls for him and he promises that she'll never be alone again. After a bomb destroys Reiji's house, he assumes that she is killed and he decides to leave as his life is in danger. However, Cal was still alive and she thinks Reiji abandoned her.
Well, I woulda say Gaara He grew up being shuned and hated....Everyone feard him, he couldn't ever sleep, He thought his uncle loved him, then he tried to kill him....Yea...Bad
Naruto and Sasuke..er...I can understand Naruto..Sasuke justs over reacts...he makes things more dramtic then they really are...He wants people to feel sorry for him but he doesn't show it, he tries to act all tough when he's not

Hansel and Gretel from Black Lagoon gets my vote.
Abused since young for child pornography, taught to kill their "victims", pretty much every bad thing that can happen had happened for em. Yep seriously this was the most messed up childhood that I seen in anime and I really think that out of all the anime childhood that I seen they suffered the most.

Aikawa Hinako from the manga Bitter Virgin.

Yeah, I would also have to say Guts had it most rough.
Yukishiro Enishi's sufferings are pretty bad too, even helping to create a demon out of him.

Well, I can't think of THAT many right off the bat, but here goes:
Allen Walker:
Abandoned by his biological parents because of the innocence in his left arm, then taken in by his adopted father, Mana walker, who then dies sometime after. After grieving over his adopted father's death, the Earl turns him into an Akuma, of which Allen then has to kill his own father, unconciously, but not before he curses Allen, and is then taken in by Cross Marian, and made to work as a slave for pretty much his entire childhood..
Hansel & Gretel:
What Jazzrat said
Hayate Ayasaki:
Working for practically his entire like since age 8~9, to support his degenerative gambler parents, who end up leaving him saddled to be sold to the Yakuza for his organs after squandering every cent of his pay on their gambling habits....
Higurashi:
Quite a few...Rika, Takano, to name some.
My first thought wasof course: Naruto and Gaara
However do not let us forget the past of Souichiro Arima from Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, who always was being considered the black sheep in his family - he basically had no support.
I guess there are lot lot more to mention, coz Anime is full of tragic stories...

Yeah, though it's been said a million times already:
Naruto and Gaara from Naruto
>Come to think of it, all characters had emotional baggage SOMEWHERE, but these two Jinchuuriki had it the worst off by far. Out of the two of them, Gaara walked the darker path because while Naruto gained friends to support him, Gaara had nobody.
Kouta and all the diclonius girls from Elfen Lied
>For the record, technically, it should be "Elfenlied". That's right, one word. It's German, after all. Although ALL characters' childhoods were pretty f***ed up in this anime (except Kouta's cousin's), I think Mayu is especially worthy of note because she was not only sexually exploited by her pedophile stepfather, but her mother practically threw her out of the home because she was JEALOUS. I wished that some character, somewhere in the series would come and use those two as human bullet shields.
Clare and probably any Claymore from Claymore
>Let's just say I wish Teresa hadn't died. A lot of Claymores had sad childhoods usually involving their entire families eaten before their very eyes. However, I still think Clare had it worst off out of the bunch. Just my opinion.
Kenshin Himura from Rurouni Kenshin
>His backstory from the OVA's was EXTREMELY sad and had me bawling like a baby. Surrogate family being killed, then his life as an assassin was heartbreaking. If you've seen the OVA's like Samurai X and Reflection, you know what I mean.

Ayasaki Hayate from Hayate no Gotoku:
Let's see, irresponsible parents, working at a young age to pay off his parent's debt, working various dangerous job to the point he's an expert in almost anything (Professional level cook), being sold off to "very nice people".
Allen Walker from D.Grayman:
Abandon because of his arm, taken in by Mana, then regrettably turned Mana into an Akuma and forced to kill the only one that care about him off. Followed the worst master possible, forced to work and cheat to pay off his master debt.
Nic Robin from One Piece:
Acquired a devil fruit at a young age, picked on by kids becuz she's different, her mother left her to do research. Watched her either island burned down by Buster Call, including her mother and people that cared about her. Witnessed Saul died right in front of her. Betrayed by various people over her childhood in favour of her 79 million bounty.
Ayasaki Hayate from Hayate no Gotoku:
Let's see, irresponsible parents, working at a young age to pay off his parent's debt, working various dangerous job to the point he's an expert in almost anything (Professional level cook), being sold off to "very nice people".
Yeah - you defenitelky got a point there ^^

I would say Rika, from Higurashi no Naku Koro ni. Well, she suffered something horrible in her... childhoods :)
And from the same series, Takano has a pretty dark past as well. Poor thing.
It's ironic how people who suffered in their childhood tend to make other people's lives miserable. I don't think I will ever understand that concept.
... Wait, Satoko too. Now that I think about it, she probably is the one who suffered the most.
Not happy in the first place because she had so many different "fathers", ended up killing her parents, had to live with her aunt, with whom she was arguing considerably, her brother disappeared after killing her aunt, her uncle came back, and in Yakusamashi-hen, she saw Rika's dead body as well as those of her friends, causing her to be traumatized, and when she was about to discover to truth about the disaster, she died... Oh, yeah, definitely the most unfortunate character.
Rena was not that happy either. Not at all, actually.
Keiichi... yes, kinda.
... Wow. Almost all the characters in Higurashi have rather dark pasts.

im really suprised no one mentioned myself; yourself....this is more believable than most other anime childhoods....as far as on the plane of reality and what could possible happen in real life...this kinda takes the cake....
yo her freakin parrents died in a fire....and shes filled with alot of angst now because of it....yeah there are alot worse childhoods...but in terms of what could really happen in a life like tragedy....this is the worst that could happen i think...to lose your parents , and for your comfort zone(sana) to be away when you need them most....pretty harsh...
i totally love this series

Gaara from Naruto had to put up with some terrible things during his childhood, due to his status as a Jinchuuriki
the diclonius girls from Elfen Lied

Anyone from Elfen lied.
Guts from Berserk.

I don't like the character, I hate the anime and haven't read the visual novel itself yet, but i think my vote (if i have only 1) go to Kohaku from Tsukihime also.
A past that can't bring people back to life no matter how many years passed or allow any hopes in the future must be terribly terrified.
