Also, please explain all the file names and instructions :twitch: (if there are any) in detail, beacuse I'm a n00b w/ VCD files, MPEG1 files, MPEG2 files, and NTSC files, etc.. I know my DVD player cannot play CD-1 (or is it CD-I?) , PAL, SCREAM, or CD-G (whatever the heck those are  ) Anyway, I hope sombody can help me 'cause my family's getting really P.O.ed with me beacuse our computer is sooo slow beacuse of all the anime I downloaded. I hope sombody can help me. I'de really appreciate it :help:

Do you want them to play in a DVD player or just on your computer? If you want them to be accepted by a DVD player you need to get DVD-R's. This is so that they will play in almost all DVD players. If you want them to play on your comp just burn them onto your cd. They will play fine off of that. Or you can be like the rest of us and go here (http://www.amazon.com) or here (http://www.jlist.com/PG/) and be a good otaku ^^;

If I get DVD-Rs, can I still burn my files to a DVD-R with a Regular CD Burner and be able to watch them on a DVD player? (I am a good otaku... I'm just impatient for some animes to be released in the US :innocent:)

No, you can't. A CD-burner can't burn DVDs, though a DVD burner can (atleast generally) burn CDs as well as DVDs.
As for just burning the files, that won't work either. Your standard DVD player only understands mpeg2 (and mpeg1) while pretty much all fansubs are mpeg4(xvid/divx) in an avi container. Every file will have to be re-encoded to mpeg2 before it's burned on the DVD so that the player will actually play them.

Okay, I got a program that can convert files to: Standard MPEG1, VCD NTSC (MPEG-1 as VideoCD in NTSC Format, VCD PAL (*but my DVD Player instruction manual says my DVD player can't play PAL files), Standard MPEG2, SuperVCD NTSC (MPEG-2 as SVCD in NTSC format), SuperVCD PAL (see *note), DVD NTSC (MPEG-2 as DVD in NTSC Format), and DVD PAL (see *note). Which one should I use to convert my files which are in windows media player format right now, and will burn to a CD-R using my regular CD Burner, and be able to view on my DVD player? :help:
(Also, generally, how much is a DVD burner?)

I'd say your best bet is to go with NTSC SVCD, provided that your DVD player can play SVCDs.
Most new DVD-burners retail for around 100-150 euros (128-192$) around here, and Finland isn't really that cheap so they'll probably be somewhat cheaper where you live.

Okay, so (I have widows XP) do I just send the converted file to CD Drive E (My Regular CD Burner), then copy the files to a CD-R? My DVD player dosen't say anything about being able to play NTSC SVCD, but it dosen't say that it can't either. If it helps, I have a RCA DRC212(N) DVD Player. I would think it could paly SVCDs. Is there a special program I need (preferably a FREE or TRIAL program [a little low on $$$ right now...] :heh: ) before I burn them to a CD-R using my CD burner? (Sorry If I'm not understanding you, and for all the questions...)
If you know the format, and you're not doing anything fancy, you can just put it in the right location. However it's easier to use a authoring program like
http://www.vcdeasy.org/index.php
(free trial available)

Thanks. I'll check out the progam later today. I hope it works :)
Check back later to see if it worked.

Okay, before I download the program suggested by warnold (thanks again for the tips, everybody) how should I convert the files? The program I am using has some different options, and I am not sure which ones to use. Cruzz said an NTSC SVCD format would be good, so these are the options if I use that: (Firt off, I am using a demo version of Essien R&D DirectConvert [if anybody knows a nother free or trial version of a converter that may be more reliable or may work better, I would appreciate the info] and it says it will "watermark all converted files". Does that meen that the files will be lighter than they should be? ) MPEG-1 Layer 2 Audio (Standard for all formats), Dolby Digital AC3 Audio, Multiplex (combine) audio and video files after conversion, Delete temporary audio and video files after multiplex, and variable bitrate. Second off, I take it the program warnold suggested does not require a DVD-burner. Is that correct? Anyway, I really REALLY appreciate all the information, thanks again :)

Since you have a CD-Burner you'll want those episodes to be the original format....simply burn them on a blank CD in ISO mode.
If you wish to encode them to DVD...
(I won't go through the whole process...just the main program, TMPGEnc)
Get your file in TMPGEnc, download the KDVD template for NTSC video....
Use the KDVD template in TMPGEnc, change CQ to 82-85, raise max bitrate to 6000-7000.
Switch color format to Component
If the fps is 23.976 choose 3:2 Pulldown on Playback for the interlace mode, along with 23.976 (29.97 internal) for the FPS settings. GOP should be at 12 for anime.
I have a RCA DRC212(N) DVD Player
Google thinks that your DVD player supports SVCD so I guess it should be okay.
it says it will "watermark all converted files". Does that meen that the files will be lighter than they should be?
It means that the program will embed some kind of watermark into the file, most likely a logo which is constantly visible.
For the conversion, I'd go with DVD2SVCD (http://www.dvd2dvd.org/) + TMPGenc (http://www.tmpgenc.net/). They're both free for non-commercial usage and there are quite a few guides to them around (well, most of them are for DVD2SVCD + CCE (http://www.cinemacraft.com/eng/home.html) but the principle is the same), like this (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvd2svcd-avi.htm) one
If you want a free alternative to EasyVCD, try this (http://www.vcdimager.org/guides/vcdimager_tools_gui.html). After you've converted files to a proper SVCD stream, you use that program to make an image file which you can burn on the CD.
In the end, I don't really think it's worth it to go through all this trouble to watch fansubs on a dvd player. It's a million times easier to just burn the episodes on a CD and watch them on the PC, heh.

Ok, I am confused about a whole bunch of stuff. Okay, first off: All my anime files are in windows media player format right now. I want to get them to a CD-R using my CD-burner (not DVD burner), so I can watch them on my DVD player, and I guess I need to put them into SVCD NTSC format. I need to know step-by-step how to do that (in non-computer jargen please, unless you explain it). I have a converter called DirectConvert (See previous replies). I now also have TMPGEnc (I need to know what TMPGEnc is for, if I understand it correctly, its a encoder, but I cannot put windows media player files into it, and I tried to convert one of my anime files to MPEG-2, and that wasn't supported by TMPGEnc either). Another program I could download if I need it, is VCDEasy. All I need to know is what I need to do, step by step, to put my files onto a CD-R using the programs above (or other programs needed [please give me the links to download them {only trial or free programs please}]) and my CD-Burner. I'm sorry for all the questions, but I really appreciate all those who are helping me.

that all sounds correct. The only thing that might be hard, is that I've never converted anything that was a .wmv format (I assume that's what you mean by "windows media player format", if I'm wrong, please tell me.) But It should work the same as an AVI file.

http://www.vcdhelp.com/ Is where I learned everything I know on the subject, but I'll summarize.
The process of creating a SVCD disk is
1) convert the video/audio stream you have to the an mpeg2 stream of the appropriate resolution and bitrate for SVCD. (more explained later)
2) use an authoring program (vcdeasy, etc) to put that mgeg2 stream into the appropriate format, along with any chapter marks, etc you want.
3) burn that to a CD.
1) part 1 is the usual hard part: I use TMPGEnc for this, but it appears that DirectConvert will do it also. Looking at the documentation on the web site,Select:
MPEG-1 Layer 2 Audio
Multiplex (combine) audio and video files after conversion,
Delete temporary audio and video files after multiplex
variable bitrate.
hit convert. What extension does it want to put on the result? If it's not mp<something> tell me what it is and I'll try to figure out what it's doing.
(FYI: TMPGEnc is more complicated, and gives you much more control over this process. It also produces the best results of any of the free/cheap converters, If you figure out the correct settings)
If you want to use TMPGenc to do this see http://www.dvdrhelp.com/tmpgencsvcd.htm
2) see http://www.dvdrhelp.com/vcdeasyhowto.htm
Summary:
open vcdeasy
Select Videocd type: SVCD
drop the mpg from the precious step in the big space.
select your CD writer, and check "burn"
If you want to add chapter marks, select the chapter tab and add them there. (http://www.dvdrhelp.com/sefy/?id=chapters2.html)
Hit "Go"
you should now have a SVCD you can drop in your DVD player.

ok question.
I want to burn files onto DVD.
My friend has a DVD burner.
Each file is about 420,000 KB as MPEG
So how much do you have to add when its being converted?
I have about 21 episodes.
About how many DVDs do i need for these?

Just noticed this thread, perhaps I can add a few insights. A friend of mine in Austin and I have both been building video DVDs for some time now, with menus and everything, for a variety of series we like. I do this because I want to share these subs with a number of old timer friends who don't have fast enough computers or broadband to be able to watch these things on their computers. (And because they, like me, feel that anime should be watched on a nice big TV from the comfort of your couch in the company of friends, not huddled alone over a computer monitor. Call me crazy.)
Now, the system we use for this is probably rather different than most others here. We are both using PowerMacs with Apple's DVD Studio Pro authoring software (the best there is for serious DVD creation). So as far as the DVD creation itself, if you're not on a Mac or if you want the $1.95 solution, that won't help you much.
HOWEVER, the system we've developed for exporting the video from the Bittorrent downloaded Divx files into MPEG2 suitable for use with the DVD authoring software should be usable. We use the open-source softwares ffmpeg (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffmpeg/), mpeg2enc (http://mjpeg.sourceforge.net/MacOS/) , and y4mscaler (http://www.mir.com/DMG/Software/) to export mpeg2 video and audio wav files separately from a single Divx file. From the first link ffmpeg is available with a GUI interface on several OSes including Windows. This should be the primary tool you'll need. (I am less sure about the others though)
FYI The main reason for using the scaler is to shrink the picture down a bit to compensate for TV overscan. You see, on your computer you see every pixel of the picture so if the subtitle is close to the bottom edge it's not a problem. But the first time we did this we found this doesn't work so good when watching subs on TV. Tv sets have an overscan that crops off the outer 10% of the picture or so, so on many TVs the subs are cut off the bottom edge of the screen.
Also be sure that if you are making honest-to-goodness DVDs, use DVD-Rs, not DVD+Rs! DVD+R is basically a made-up standard and many DVD players don't understand them.

ok thanks,
do you think you can give me tips for making non-anime DVDS meaning with no subtitles?
I want to do that with some reality shows and other shows
thanks
