I wouldn't mind seeing another light hearted episode before we get into serious things. Since it's about Sunohara, I suppose I'll get it.
argh-- missed the couple few seconds >__>
- i won't be surprised if that 'girl' is who i think she is..
- Mei learns to bake (breads?) Akio style?
- Tomoya&Nagisa tries to hook Sunohara
(something to do with Mei worrying about her single brother)
- R1: Ryou = Fail + Kyou wrath.
- R2: Tomoyo = complete FAIL + I'm so going to kill him.
- R3: Kotomi = somehow.. a success.
first bond; Violin of death:heh:
- R4: Yukine = fail.
- R5: stranger.
- R6: Sanae?!!
still makes me laugh how he still thinks she is Nagisa's 'onee-san'. Apparently, she finds it wonderful that he thinks of her that way.
- Mei confirms.
- Sanae COSPLAY!!!!!!
*drools* *nosebleed*
-Nagisa thinks even Tomoya fell for her mom.
- the rest was dead hillarious XD
spine chilling.. Sanae!! <33
poor Sunohara, if only he knew xD
preview seems to be about Mei and Sunohara. I sense an incest between the two in this episode, my 2cents, Mei also gets a boyfriend as a revenge.
episode was totally awesome!

I only have three thing to say about the episode:
I love Sunohara
I love Sanae
I loved this episode.
10/10.
Clannad After Story doesn't fail to deliver....yet.

Bullet summary (sound was kinda mediocre, so it didn't really help to understand what was happening)
Episode 2 (revised summary) (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2008/10/09/clannad-after-story-episode-2/)
Not as entertaining as the baseball match, but it was quite fun nonetheless. I was actually expecting some twist due the fact Mei knew about Sanae's identity from the beginning (where in the game, she never met Nagisa and Sanae before in the sunohara route), but they really did a nice change (extremely unexpected :heh:)
Good stuff for several route (big flag for yukine), and we will get some serious stuff with the sunohara sibling next week.
EDIT: summary reworked, thoughts and caps

A decent set-up episode for Sunohara. But because it's typically Sunohara, that the enjoyment factor is down a little for me, but most people would definitely like it.
Crap. I knew it. I've been getting that feeling all throughout ~Before Story~, but now I'm starting to really not enjoy watching Sunohara getting tortured, even for comical purposes. (; -_-)
<- avant supporter of Sunohara's rag-bag comic relief role being toned down/made more believable for the sake of a more rational BBF role.
Liked the part with Nidaime Yukine though.
And frankly, I'm not so sure what to bite about the disguise route, but I'll digress, it's a nice approach story-wise without risking marginal deviation.
And braided twin-tails cockroach ahoge megane seifuku wearing milf Sanae? Fetish implosion right there. Nagisa's jealous look was all kinds of win. Akio won't know what he's missing.
This episode is crazy.........
Sanayi is godness..........

Well shucks, if we're actually heading into a Sunohara based or centric story arc then I'm probably out for a while. I know a lot of people love this character and his scenes, but I just do not find this guy's formulaic antics of general loudness followed by getting pummeled funny at all. It's of the trying to hard to illicit laughs brand of comedy that just plain doesn't work on me.
Anyway, I'm 100% with Nightengale on how I'd prefer to see Sunohara handled if he's going to be prominent in future episodes.
If you want that kind of Sunohara, then by all means I'd encourage you to hold your frustration a little and give these episodes a chance. I don't assure you that you will like Sunohara by the end, but the Sunohara sibblings arc in the game isn't considered one of the best for nothing.

Well considering that since everyone has their favourite game arcs to whose superiority they will attest (the same goes for any game really), I've pretty much heard by this point that every arc is "one of the best". So really I'd prefer to just wait and see so that I can make up my own mind. I think that's the best approach, don't you? Especially since more often then not I'm indifferent to most aspects of a show that people seem to approve of and vice versa.
Well... at least I can assure you there are 1 or 2 that can are universally considered one of the worst. :p From a less biased POV though, the route is well told. My main point wasn't that by the end of the route you will fall in love with Sunohara, but at the very least you will find it solid. Whether you like it or not is up to personal taste, as you mention, however if what you want to see is a different perspective on his character then this is a good chance.

So I can hear his story, but I don't have to like him ala Jean-Baptiste Clemence from The Fall.....okay, sounds like a fair deal.

Well, the eventual Sunohara development in his story aside, my criticism of Sunohara's generalized role of rag-bag doesn't restrict itself merely to any form of Sunohara centralized material anyway. I don't don't quite enjoy seeing him being treated as 99% gag be it his route or whoever's, especially since it's not like he has no subtle elements to his character, as evident from the Nagisa episodes in S1 and Tomoyo episode. His abuse, to me... It got old the 7th time, even though I'll give the writers credit for making the jokes fresh constantly.
My opinion on his route's finality is a different thing, (( played it on the PS2 )), but I'll keep that to myself until the time comes.

Yeah Yukine flag ^-^ that was great XD Sanae twist suprised me didn't expect them to do that either! Yeah since he is fused into everyone's route, Sunohara gets his share of ass kicking. Can we hope for 64 hit??? I hope so >.< Can't wait to see how they will handle sunohara route next.

yes! finally watched ep2 (missed it on live streaming)... hell i ended up watching the second half twice lol:D
episode summary in one sentence: SANAE-SAN FTW!!!!!
hell, i'd love to be sunohara for this episode, even if the girlfriend part is "pretending", he gets to hold her hand:naughty:
the part where he kept reporting back to tomoya had me cracking up big time:D
loved how nagisa was getting jealous/worried with the "is tomoya-kun falling for okaa-san" look...
so it is the sibling arc.. gotta love-hate sunohara in the future eps then :heh:

This was a pretty fun episode to watch.
- Sunohara abuse was constant... I'm surprised he's still alive by the end of the episode. O.o
- So much laughter from beginning to end. Still not into the main plot, however, but enjoyable nonetheless.
- But, the biggest surprise has got to be Sanae. :kisskiss:
She was absolutely adorable in this episode. She practically passed off as one of Nagisa's classmates by the end. It's hard to tell she's some 30-something or late 20s woman. o_o; The cosplay scenes were awesome.

Somehow, there exists an urge to do bodily harm to Sunohara Youhei in me after this episode was done... but anyways.
KyoAni pretty much spent this episode setting flags and then grabbing peoples' attention onto Sanae. I find it interesting how Nagisa had a slight change in hairstyle just for the cosplay part of the story.
lol at the episode.
long time never see the flying book, and Sunohara get beaten again :heh:. get ignore by Tomoyo was really funny, I feel bad for Sunohara.
and Sanae was really awesome, the cosplay, hard to know she is Nagisa mother. I believe Sunohara will be super heart broken after he know Sanae was Nagisa mother.

I'll shamefully admit that while working on this ep, I had to take some time to check frame-for-frame the tilt shot to take in Sanae in seifuku in all its glory. My jaw just about hit the floor a la Wile E. Coyote. Talk about absolute gawkworthiness.

Fun episode :) - Sanae's disguise is faultless ;p
And Yukine looks baked, as always.

Also, when Sunohara was having his little fantasy about Tomoyo, was that the weird juice from Air he was drinking?

A little off but, any dates for the release of the first DVD?
Well, this episode had some good and some bad. Nothing quite like the first episode, but that's to be expected. It seems like in any anime I watch, episode 2 is usually a disappointment.
First glimpse at the OP and the ED used in different places than the first episode always leads to a pretty neat feeling of "This is what the show is going to feel like". The ED, although I hated it at the start, WORKED. I loved how it went with the episode perfectly, kind of like how dangos eventually worked.
And THAT is what those animals in that place with the lights looked like? I always though they'd be bigger, like real rams, and more head, not just a giant fur ball.
The ending of the episode really picked it up for me, when they had Sunohara choose Sanae. The start was just... blah. It's going into what I call the "Sailor Moon SuperS" effect, where the supporting characters have become kind of uneccessary, but the animation studio wants to keep them in. With that, they insist that if somebody of the supporting characters does something, every single one of them have to. In the first episode, it was everyone saying "Fight, Tomoya". In the second, it was Sunohara asking all the characters, not just the one or two you ask in the game. I REALLY hope they cut this out soon. Sure, I love the characters, but after their arcs, I'm not really interested in seeing them other than an occassional gag (Kotomi's baseball at bat, for instance. XD)
7/10 for the latter part of this post.
Guys I didn't know that I will say this someday but I have totally fall in love with Sanae.
God! She is just beautiful, uber-kawaii, mega gorgeus in seifuku and with glasses!
This was one of the best episodes I've saw. I'm glad because:
The violin power is back :D
And Yukine-chan is back.

That is the MOST HILARIOUS Clannad episode I have seen (I don't read the books).
But I think Tomoyo and Youhei would make an excellent couple.
Yep but after he get a good life insurance :D

LOL. Yeah but both their characters fit each other. Both of them are brash but care for the ones close to them. Youhei looks like a child and Tomoyo has a weakness for children.
They would be a loving couple if they are together (We can have more tsundere scenes if Youhei starts voyeuring....but I doubt he will if he loves Tomoyo.)

everytime i see the kyou scene with the kingergartens in the opening, i cant help but wonder what it must be like for those kids. imagine what its like at home...
parent: "hey son, how was your first day of school?"
son: "it was fun"
parent: "whats your homeroom teacher like?"
son: "TSUNDERE DA!":D
yeah i know thats totally random:heh:, thats just how my mind works... "random"

Really? I fell exactly the other way around though. Too many series out there treat their secondary characters as non existent once their arcs are told and done. Having this fresh approach at trying to give everyone some screen time without it getting too intrusive (then again this is just my POV) feels kind of refreshing in a genre that kept using the same "use and dispose" methodology with all its supportive characters.

man i wish this episode aired A LOT earlier! that way, sanae would have stood a better chance in saimoe. as for me, it didnt take till season 2 episode 2 to love her! she was practically first on my list everytime i voted in the preliminary rounds.:D
on a sidenote, i wonder how the subbers are gonna translate the part wherenagisa says "you added an extra "bi" there..."

wow... umm , ep2 was really an overkill....
Sunohara was always a laugh in parts of Clannad but to have a whole episode on him was too much for me to handle, it was funny to watch the poor guy been misguided around but in the end its a whole lot of nothing and if it was meant to lead to some unknown relationship Sunohara have with Mei then i don't think this is the right approach, keeping in mind that this series is only 12 episodes long ....
Though there is no official confirmation as of yet, given the episode summaries released so far it highly indicates it will be 2 seasons long, if that's your main concern.
Clannad is enterning dangerous areas... with Sunahara & X...
well one could say it was a little cheer up for him after being the punching bag for all the girls...

Actually, in the subs I watched right now, they added a note about that. But an AMAZING episode, laughed so hard at the "practice" part, Is it just me, or do the character designs seem "fresher" this season?

Yeah. I have no problems with having them in for some screen time. My issue is that they're doing the thing where if one character has some screen time, every secondary character must have some sort of screen time directly after that. It'd be a lot better if they just used the characters when they were needed or could make a scene better, such as maybe have Sunohara ask Kyou/Ryou, and then go straight to Sanae. Even Tomoyo was fine, since that was in the original. But Kotomi and Yukine made me headbang, since it was overkill.
Actually, Yukine made me smile for reasons I can't mention here. XD

Overkill? Actually, it makes MUCH MORE sense that Youhei asks them out instead of Ryou and Kyou/Tomoyo.
The later two have an obvious "hate meter ON" with Youhei and himself knows and is deep down scared by their physical strength.
On the mean time, Youhei got charmed by Kotomi and Yukine calm and smooth personality, so it would have been a better AND logical choice if he was about to ask to Yukine, for instance.
I would actually think it would be hell overboard if they tried to pull misae in there, but thankfully it wasn't the case.
But in such instance, they really involved characters that have potential and logical insertion, and absolutely not random.
It's sad that no one talks about Mei :(

Then have him just ask Kotomi and Yukine. It's the quantity I'm getting at. By asking every major character, it's entering the same problems SM SuperS had. They can't just pick one or two that make the most sense, and have to ask every major character who already had their route finished. Well, except Fuuko, for obvious reasons.

Oh. my. god. I know Key draws their grown-up female characters very cutely, but even I'm compelled to say this to someone much older than my current age (besides those immortal characters in other fantasy settings, that is): SANAE-SAN KAWAII!:love::love: I fainted at her schoolgirl disguise.
Tomoya, admit it, you like your girlfriend's mother better than her. ;)
Flags for future events everyone should look out for:
1. Tomoya suggests that when Sunohara greets him next time, he should end each sentence with a nonsensical "And the toilet seat cover". Stay tuned for this. :D
2. Yukine having a rough delinquent as an acquaintance. Should hopefully see her story soon enough.
3. Last but not least, the continuation of the "Illusion World" cut scenes.

Well, those scenes were included in the original visual novel itself. This being Kyo-Ani, like them or not, you know they're compelled to include them, with Kotomi substituting for Fuuko for two purposes: 1. to give Kotomi more screentime, since she does not appear at all in other characters scenarios, especially when the real After Story begins, 2. Fuuko already had her fair share of nonsensical cameos, to add more would just make it repetitive and tiresome, so it's better to let her sleep in her coma in peace.

I know. I've played the VN. It's just, they had so many asks... If I remember correctly, in the VN, didn't Sunohara only ask 1 girl before Sanae? It was like, you went down a list, and then got to one person, GAG, laugh, Sanae. They really could have done with less people. Sure, leave someone out, but give more time to actual plot instead of the same gag. The game did the same thing.
Heck, you could include the other gags as a DVD special if you want. That would actually be quite neat. XD

Actually, it wouldn't make sense for them not to try all their options. If we don't take a producers point of view, i would actually can't imagine Tomoya and Youhei running out of options and just going "bah", while they are extremely stubborn (especially our blond joker).
It is actually within the pattern of their actions, and I think it wouldn't be exactly any good to drag the initial attempts to the double for nothing.

Well, in the VN, you only get to pick one girl at a time. If Kyo-Ani decides they want to stuff all the routes they can without compromising the story, they'll do it.
Speaking of someone's route being compromised for After Story, it has to be poor Kyou. She must have really waited for a really long time before she can finally have a chance to take out her frustration when slapping Tomoya for her broken heart.

Where'd you hear that? According to the general discussion thread, based on the DVD release plans, it appears the season will be another 24 episodes.
Anyway, onto the actual episode...it was certainly entertaining in various ways, but it's hard to judge the episode on its own since it's part of an ongoing story. I will say, though, that I can definitely see the seeds being planted for some serious Sunohara character development (I really liked the next episode preview for some reason, actually).

I was thinking the same thing when I watched that part...
(I actually felt like beating up Tomoya for being such an insensitive idiot... and then Kyou enters and grants me my wish)
Kudos to Kyoani for continuing to provide us with the post-resolution effects of TomoyaxNagisa, and how it affected the other characters.
(Kyou's lingering feelings of disappointment, Tomoyo's 'distance', Kotomi's cluelessness etc.)
Need not say much about Sanae, but ++ for service :D
MILF Sanae.....I think you should call Riker for this one.
And another LOL award for Sunohara's reaction everytime...hehehe
Next episode? Is it incest? Anyone? >.<
I share the same thought as well. As I rewatched that slap scene 3 times, since it went by so quickly. I literally blurp out, "wow, nice kyou! you didn't forget about the real idiot"
This episode was good, liked it almost as much as the first episode.
I have to admit my face must've looked the same as Nagisa's and Tomoya's when it displayed Sanae's schoolgirl outfit in its full glory. :D
On a serious note, I know this plan was supposed to make Mei not worry about her brother so much, but this plan is producing a different kind of worry for her. Poor Mei-chan... If Sanae's cover gets blown, it's going to be bad! :upset:

Oh no, all the things I find annoying about Sunohara rolled into one episode. I'd give this a 5 but I won't vote because I know I'm terribly biased against anything that detracts from a linear plot.
About the only thing I liked in this episode was Nagisa's jealousy (a million times cuter than anything her airhead mother can pull off). Can't wait for the anime to get back on track with Nagisa.
[Edit, following post below] Ah yes, and the initial bit wasn't bad. Confusing as always, but the melancholic atmosphere and lead-up to the OP were good.

I'm another who has no use for the Sunohara character. For me, this episode was a total loss. This show is about magic melancholy moe for me, not stupid comedy.
I guess it wasn't really a total loss: the initial bit with the girl and her robot was mildly interesting.

Well again the general idea behind this episode seems like it could make for a solid story (although on the other hand the girlfriend as a measure of success and self-improvement just doesn' seem right to me at all), but it really just leads to more of the same for Sunohara. What can I say, I like what he's trying to do for Mei, but everytime he tries to do ANYTHING it just leads to the same old antics of him being loud and getting beat up/humiliated by the girls. How is this series of events supposed to make me feel proud of him when it makes me feel the guys really only good for one story instead. And worse, in the end it all seems to amount to nothing going by Mei's apparent reaction at the end of the episode. So ultimately it ends up feeling like antics for the sake of antics yet again and not very funny ones at that.
I don't know, but this episode almost feels like it didn't really have to happen, or at least not in the way it did. I really can't wait for Sunohara to be out of the picture so we can move on to the Tomoya/Nagisa storyline. Also I really do swear the character artstyle looks different this episode. It's not bad or anything, just noticeably different. More like Lucky Star in someway I can't quite pin down.

This episode had some overkill in it. It had too much of the typical boy gets beat up by girl cliche in it. Actually, the entire episode had too much of the typicality of animes in this genre that it kind of left a sour taste after viewing.
Don't get me wrong, I love Sunohara as a character and mostly for the scenes in which he is portrayed seriously in. The next episode's preview already shows me that we are going to get some of this and I cannot wait.
Overall this episode gets a 6/10. It was average it wasn't bad nor was it good. Not a bad rating, but I expect much more from this series. I won't be surprised if next episode can hit a 9 though.
Ueno Chiyoko is getting better and better than I thought.
Horiguchi Yukiko is making an appearance next week.
This is the happiness!
That episode was fun.
Nekomimi maid Sanae ! :p
This episode was hilarious but the overdose of sunohara pushed it too close to the border of stupidity. A little sunohara humor balances out the rest of show most of the times, but this time it is just too much. I was laughing at one moment and yet have an urge to fast forward.
Sanae! Really overdose on the moe there. If saimoe had a sub category for MILF, she is a top contender!

is it just me who thinks it kinda feels weird hearing tomoyo address tomoya by "okazaki" again? after getting sucked into ep24 in season 1 where she called him "tomoya", going back to "okazaki" just feels strange now

admit it tomoya, you know you're drooling all over:D
I love how in the last scenes when Sunohara falls down when seeing Mei, he does a spin upsidedown to get back up. O_o

Sanae cosplaying all those roles, made this episode from a 9 to a 10 almost instantly. especially the last school uniform pushed it up quite a bit. After the first episode I'm starting to feel the more clannad atmosphere as it goes into character segments in a way. The preview for next weeks episode is what intrigued me the most, seeing Sunohara in like a depressed mad way. I want to figure out what is causing that.
Sanae = major win!

Awww...You should watch any of the many Oh My Goddess! iterations...Wonderful series.
But yea Miss Kikuko Inoue our eternally 17 goddess is a large part of Sanae's appeal for sure...And I always liked Sanae it was just this episode with the cosplay and especially that schoolgirl look coupled with her voice at the end hit every Moe button in my brain...
I come for After Story meat and I get Sunohara? Well, at least it's an arc from the VN.
I was never fond of Sunohara, really, because he was mostly used as one joke character... over, and over, and over again.
The first half of the episode was unappealing. More Sunohara slapstick and more trying to cram the other girls into the story (I had other favorites--Please don't pour salt in the wounds!!). The second half, though... We get to see more depth from Sunohara. It's subtle, but it's there, and it's clearly coming out in the next episode. Also, more of Sanae is great. While I wasn't as taken with her as some of the others, I enjoyed the scenario very much.
Nagisa needs to keep that more outspoken attitude we saw here. She also needs to keep that hairclip. Wowzers. From imouto type to womanly with a single accessory!

I must say, the OP for the show really does grow on you after a while. I keep getting the urge to listen to that song, and right now it's already near the top of my favorite anime OP songs list. I really appreciate the subtlety of the lyrics and music, as its style parallels that of the show itself, IMHO. And, of course, such concepts are certainly not foreign to the development of a lasting relationship on a firm foundation.
Now, I haven't played the game, so I'm not all that knowledgable of Sunohara's route, but as for Sunohara and the episode itself...
It seems to me that Sunohara possesses a particular delusion that I've actually seen to be fairly common around young men, at least at the college level (hence why it was notible for me). It's the notion that having a girlfriend would somehow magically solve other problems in my life, such as what I plan to do after graduation. In the beginning of the episode, I found it interesting that Mei herself never mentions anything about wishing her brother had a girlfriend; that suggestion was entirely from Sunohara. From that scene, I'd guess that this "solution" is really what Sunohara himself desires, because he thinks that all would be good if he could just land a girlfriend.
Now, don't get me wrong: there's nothing wrong with desiring a relationship. However, I think this particular motive for wanting a relationship is rather dangerous. First off, it's treating the relationship as a means to an end. This grants it a certain degree of expendability (and thus loss of accountability), as the person I would be with is no longer my goal, but merely one of many paths towards another goal. This seems like a poor foundation to build upon. Second, it creates unrealistic expectations that can lead to all sorts of problems and disappointments. It becomes a matter of me wanting something out of the other person, not me wanting to serve and help another. Having a girlfriend and succeeding in life aren't exactly statistically correlated, no matter how much most anime would like to tell us otherwise. Third, and perhaps most important, this notion encourages blame-shifting and diminishes personal responsibility. If things don't work out (i.e. I get a girlfriend, but other parts of my life don't improve), I would be tempted to blame my girlfriend instead; maybe she wasn't the right one for me, or maybe she isn't meeting my expectations. Such thoughts blind me from my initial problem: that my lack of focus and direction in life is my own problem, and I must address it personally. Perhaps it would be more beneficial if I were to examine my own life and see where I need improvement, rather than shifting my expectations from myself onto others and expect them to comply. I'm not saying that relationships like this never work out, but I would be apprehensive over the wisdom of such a decision.
In the past few weeks, I've discussed this sensitive topic with several of my college friends, as well as older and more mature men who once went through such a phase as well. I guess that's why I'm actually very interested in how the story will play out, as Sunohara's plight seems quite relevant to my world right now. I have friends who will graduate from college in a year or two, yet have no idea of what they plan on doing next. But still, we place so much emphasis on getting into a relationship (we call it "being marriage-happy"), without first pausing to consider our own motives for why we desire it. Oftentimes, it comes down to our anxiety for the future and lack of contentment with the present. It's something that many are uncomfortable talking about, even though it can get pretty pervasive. Even I've struggled with it, after all.
Seeing Sunohara with this notion (whether or not he's aware of it) piques my interest in the show. His lack of maturity is a bit over-the-top, I admit, but not altogether unbelievable for a youth his age. As it stands, it looks like he will come to experience each of the difficulties I mentioned earlier. Well, maybe not the last one, because his fake girlfriend is Belldandy. Hopefully that will assist him in his realization of his own faults and immaturity, which is probably the best place to start on the road towards discarding the delusion.
Anyway, as I said, I don't really know much about Sunohara's route in the original VN, so I'll just stop there lest I go way off or something. The next episode preview, though, makes me hopeful that next week we may be able to dive more in-depth into Sunohara's character regarding this issue.
And actually, I wonder: just how many anime out there espouse, or at least suggest, the belief that having a girlfriend solves your life's other problems? Hmm...

Ep 2
It was a mildly amusing episode, but not much more than that. I can see why people say that the first half of the ep was overkill. The payoff of each situation was seeing Sunohara fail, which is something we've really seen about a million times before, so it's obviously not going to be as funny/entertaining now. But throughout this whole part of the episode I couldn't really get past the fact that Sunohara had been manipulated by Tomoya into this course of action. I mean, Tomoya obviously has a reputation for this sort of thing, but his target this time was exceptionally easy, and he was getting him to do some pretty outrageous stuff. This is one of the few occasions where he really came pretty close to crossing the border into "cruel" territory.
I was mildly interested in Sanae's reasons for taking part in the charade. She's too nice.
Edit: I'm a little surprised Mei didn't see through Sanae's disguise. I thought she's be smarter than that.
A pretty average ep for me. Girls beating up Sunohara got old during the first season, and I just feel sorry for the guy now. Hopefully he gets a deserved reward at the end of his arc. Only good thing about this ep was Sanae. I just want Clannad to start with the real plot already, instead of slapstick comedy that goes nowhere. Thankfully, it looks like next episode will be when the series starts to get serious.

^ I was just about to say that! She should wear it like that all the time.
This episode was kind of pointless, but still very enjoyable. I laughed so hard at Kotomi's violin solo and when Tomoya brushed off her shoulder becuase Sunohara touched it. I also really liked the background music when they were cleaning up the empty cans.
But, I'm still waiting for a plot line to show up. By episode 2 of the first season, there was some kind of set-up to let us know what the next arc would be about. I've never played the game, so at this point, I have no idea.

Any episode about Sunohara is just instant win for me. Two thumbs up!
God, that guy's just teh win. Mei worrying over him also brings up the moe side of things, as I can perfectly understand what her concerns are.
My only sad state of affairs would be that after all this is over and when we're into the more dramatic arcs of the After Story, I'd imagine he'd get shafted like he did last season. Oh well, that's life for a side character.
with all these "Sanae is so HAWT/gorgeous/cute!!!" i guess everyone forgotten thatshe's Akio's girl and HIS alone. Makes me furious at how lucky the bastard is :heh:

Omg... hoping for a Sunohara x Sanae ending kthx! XD OMG though, do you see how FABULOUS sunohara looks in the preview though? with the purple shirt. omg <3
Ahh Sunohara how do u survive., lol
but off topic, Suno is one of my fav chars from the show. HE HAS TO END UP WITH SOMEONE!
What bugs me about this episode is that it embodies just how much the writers (so far) have portrayed Sunohara as having little to no pride. Hopefully we see some actual character development by next episode as the preview seems promising. 8/10

Late, but here's the article:
[RIUVA] CLANNAD ~After Story~, Episode 2 (http://www.riuva.com/?p=1270)
It wouldn't have been a particularly special episode, but Nagisa's mom has got it goin' on. 8/10
She's only a little older than I am.....
Urghhh can't blame Sunohara for acting the way he did in front of Sanae :( She should cosplay more often :D
Meh. This was an average episode. I'm a big fan of Sunohara Youhei, so having him made fun of just to tell a non-existent script that probably stretched no more than 2 lines was devaluing a good established character. He showed some powerful development last season, and now he is being brought back to square one? Ah well. Next episode looks interesting considering Sunohara will be brought back to where his character was left off from season 1. The lip service to other characters such as Kyou, Kotomi (another of my favorite character), and Ryou just seemed out of place and utterly pointless. I suppose their little screen-time served to refresh the memory that these characters are still part of Clannad! Right.
The plus point of this episode was the opening bit where the little girl ask if the tin-toddler was scared. I'm concerned that we will see more of these types of episode because the show will be 24 episodes long.

2008-10-11, 05:45
It was kind of irritating to see Youhei getting the beat down through much of the episode. The VN showed that Youhei is still an abled if perverted guy with a heart of gold, and while the episode does more or less follow the development in his route, his getting his ass kicked more in this episode than any 2 other episodes combined offputs his character. I won't rate the episode until his arc is finished.
At the least I can assure to the other viewers that, assuming KyoAni doesn;t do anything drastic, Youhei will get his moment of glory soon.

It was kind of irritating to see Youhei getting the beat down through much of the episode.
Exactly my thoughts...I think this is one of those times where I just have to say "leave Sunohara alone and go beat up the real troublemaker instead, Tomoya".
This time round, Tomoya's act of "innocent teasing" has gone a bit too far. If the preview is any indication we will see a pretty depressed, heartbroken Sunohara which totally change his original character. I guess this time round, I will feel really sorry for him as he hasn't done anything wrong. It is all Tomoya's fault for being such a dick in giving him ideas which he knows will just self destruct. I mean...with friends like Tomoya, you seriously don't need any enemies and I am surprised that he has such a harem with such an unlovable personality
Back to Sunohara though, boy has he dug himself deep in this time. Even if Sanae is a MILF, she is still married and out of good will, I understand that she wants to help Sunohara to walk on the right path. But holding back crucial information like being Nagisa's mother is just dumb (and this was Tomoya's job to tell him though he thinks it would funny to see Sunohara's reaction when he finds out himself..err...sadist?).
And he even knows the whole idea of this "fake dating" was for Sunohara to make it into a real, serious relationship too so why the heck he didn't put him out of his misery while it is still early was beyond me. I don't even find it funny.
*Sigh*
I don't think I will enjoy seeing Sunohara suffer...right?
(Kyou already beat the shit out of him, which wasn't funny, but I don't think he can handle emotional pains as much as physical).

Well I won't say too much about the inevitable conclusion of this arc since it's a spoiler, but suffice to say that this time around, Youhei is going to get his ass kicked for the RIGHT reasons. And by getting so, rather than lowering our opinions of him, in my case in made me respect him as a character in the show.
Also, meganekko seifuku Sanae might just be the greatest thing ever conceived.:heh:

Well, right reasons or not, point was Tomoya should had helped pushed things in the right direction and not make things worse for temporary amusement from the very beginning. Just because the first 300 times of him playing Sunohara had been harmless in the long run with Sunohara just winging it shouldn't dull any true friend to his emotional sensitivity.
Besides, it's not like Sunohara hasn't been a good friend to Tomoya. In the episode with Nagisa, he gave sound advice to Tomoya in regards to his selfishness and its effects on others feelings, and in Tomoyo special as well, regardless of the fact that it isn't canon to After Story. It's those marginal elements that despite Sunohara's whim-and-foppery, really shows that Sunohara is not just 'comic relief punch toy #1" but rather a truly good Best Bad Friend That is Just a Little Bit Dumb.
And yes, him getting beaten up really isn't... funny anymore. Development or no development, factoring his minor development from the previous season in account as well.

9/10 for me, it wasn't as entertaining as the baseball episode but it was good nonetheless. "It'll be fine! Everyone's doing it anyway."

Finding a fake girlfriend for Sunohara was meant to be a harmless act. Sunohara fails to realize that Sanae is only a fake girlfriend and tries to develop a relationship with Sanae, leading Sunohara to become a total dick. Tomoya and Sunohara only decided to find him a fake girlfriend to impress Mei, so that she can return to her school. If you think this whole plan is a joke, I'd have to disagree with you.
And who cares if Sunohara getting physically abused isn't funny anymore. KyoAni is just following the script from the game at most parts.

Sure, this episode may have seemed pointless, but it was follow up one of my FAVORITE arcs in the VN. Probably just behind Nagisa and her After Story.
And I disagree with Tomoya doing this just for laughs. To me, he honestly wants to see Mei happy, and sure, some of it is just to poke fun at Sunohara, but in the end, he dosnt want her to be so worried.
Either way, this arc will have a lot of development for Sunohara is all I can say.

Ok one, like everyone else, I love Sanae! I'm glad she's finally getting some recognition. Also i'm really starting to dislike Tomoya. I've always loved Sunohara and I hate how Tomoya treats him. I predict a very sad and heartbroken Sunohara soon. :(
the fated rivals thing sunohara and tomoyo makes me think they need to end up together
ep 3 preview looks to be broken hearts for Sunohara :(
wow... umm , ep2 was really an overkill....
Sunohara was always a laugh in parts of Clannad but to have a whole episode on him was too much for me to handle, it was funny to watch the poor guy been misguided around but in the end its a whole lot of nothing and if it was meant to lead to some unknown relationship Sunohara have with Mei then i don't think this is the right approach, keeping in mind that this series is only 12 episodes long ....
you do know that clannad as is 24eps long? :P

-And that’s why Kotomi is my # 2 favorite girl in Clannad. :) I loved how she was so willing to help Sunohara. And the violin scene was hilarious :D, especially the part when she said “Yes, it makes better sound than before”. :heh:
- ROFL!! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi6l.gifSunohara following Tomoya’s advice and telling that school girl about the "part-time job” was awesomely hilarious!! :heh:

-Nagisa being jealous of her own mom was so cute!! BTW, I wonder if he’ll get to see Tomoya being jealous in this season as we did in the last season (Episode 18).
-Sunohara getting all excited and reporting every detail to Tomoya was so cute!!http://i237.photobucket.com/albums/ff133/onionethan/onion_Emoticons/008_.gif
-Sanae with glasses and wearing a school uniform looked so pretty and cute!!! :)
I liked this episode very much, but I’m sad because I’m more than sure that we’ll see Sunohara’s little heart break into pieces in the next episode. http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi04.gif Sunohara is a good guy so I truly think he deserves not a fake, but a real girlfriend. I must confess, I normally find Clannad far too precious and self-aware to enjoy in any serious way. But the normally turgid storytelling always takes a miraculous turn to the sharp and crisp when Sunohara is involved - like a sour-salty snack after a too-sweet dessert. It's great to see a multi-part story firmly centered around him.
Edit; And yes, i agree with those who find the constant use of him as a punching-bag thoroughly unfunny and pointless. It's not like he deserves it (and even if he did, it would be old and tired by now) - he's guilty of nothing worse than being a too-loyal best friend and a bit of a goober.

This is really because all the different routes in the game take place at the same time, so in the anime, which concatenates all the events together, he appears to be punished MORE.
And, to be fair, in the game, he does deserve it. He's a douche.

I don't think that's true of him in the anime - at least not so far. And KyoAni needs to be aware that not everyone watching this has exposure to the game.

Yeah, they toned him down a lot. Too bad, really. His douchery makes him look a lot better at the end of his route.

I never said the plan was a joke, but Tomoya should had been honest from the start about Sanae. It was more a criticism towards what Tomoya should had done rather than Sunohara being a dick.
Besides, Kyoto Animation cannot be solely restricted to the script. They're dealing with an adaption that is supposed to take into account the character development all of them went through in those 25 episodes and not just the route gamers chose in the game. Just as they can't simply go with Sanae being the fake girlfriend without a disguise, because the anime takes into account that Mei already knew Sanae.

Partially, perhaps. But Sunohara in the anime could do with a lot more subtlety to his characterization, which is the most 'resetable' of everyone due to his comic relief role, where he can be a total douche for one minute, a joker for another and a rational minded friend for 3 seconds. I am aware that they can mutually co-exist, but... it could've been done better, kinda like Macross Frontier's Mikhail to a degree.
I felt like something was off in this episode, it just doesn't have the 'polish' that season 1 did... perhaps it's the directorial style or something? Something didn't seem right.

This episode was so beyond funny. Sunohara knows how to be the prefect comic relief character. Surprised it turned out that Sanae turned out to be willing to help him in something like this. Also a hint of jealousy from Nagisa was quite cute. And once again Tomoyo was simply brilliant.

I get all the Sanae milf lubbin here. Very nice.
But I'll have to chime in with the Nagisa and the hair clip. Major looks improvement there. As someone said, made her more womanly, which will always get my approval. http://www.bikeforums.net/images/smilies/thumb.gif

i think its f*cked up that sanae is only getting recognition NOW... dont get me wrong, i loved all the cosplaying:D but i still prefer normal sanae. i loved tomoya and nagisa's reaction when they saw seifuku sanae though:D
Overall, it was a nice, funny episode. I just thought they overdid the Sunohara getting beat up part. He was shaking sooo much in this episode; he might've been having multiple seizures. From what I skimmed through the thread, it seems like this will be Sunohara's arc... Though I'm not too excited about it as I didn't think much of sunohara beside as a comic relief, I'm expecting it to be really good (simply because its clannad+kyoani). Perhaps it will really improve my image of Sunohara.
Nagisa with her hair pin. Made of win. Sunohara's AV pickup line was hilarious too.

DVD-solictations over on AoD say that After Story will consist of 8 DVDs with 3 episodes each, just like season one did. So, 24 episodes.
It's only the second episode and i went from "new op.. well, it fits but i don't like it" to "YES! I WANT IT!"
Probably the funniest episode of Clannad so far. Favourite parts:
Kyou slapping Tomoya: The noise he makes is hilarious.
Violin scene: Sunaharas voice is priceless.
Sunoharas "reports" to Tomoya AND the best of them all: The voice he uses when he sees Mei and flips back while calling her name.

Jesus Sunohara must have wrong a deity in a previous life his luck sux ass. Trying to get a fake g/f is bad enough but to be turned down by everyone beaten with a book and mocked by Kyou and then completely WHOOPED by Tomoyo and the only one besides Nagisa mom that agreed to help was Kotomi but her unique violin playing skillz killed that. Great episode

I feel sorry for Suohara he's bascially a character who gets his ass handed to him by everybody. He's only there for upping the comedy.

Nah, I wouldnt say that. He's not there purely for comedy, though he provides most of it.
When playing the game, I felt that Tomoya was a little too mean to him at times, but after playing through this arc, I cant say I think that anymore.

I love this episode. Sunohara is still funny as ever.
I like how the series is going so far. And also the OP songs for the After Story series has so much emotion in the song.

Yeah. I hope they will do something for him by the end, he deserves a little reward for putting up with all this. :heh:
Wolfen.
Finally got to watch this episode. It happens so that I plan to watch it as soon as it air, get the recording and then i see it's already 4.30 am and I'm extremely sleepy. So I tell myself "tomorrow I'll watch it for sure". And the situation repeats.
Speaking of the episode. I voted 10.
I must say that Kyou was really furious. She turns out to be more dangerous than Tomoyo. She can beat people to death with a Chinese-Japanese dictionary (see 明日社 漢和(辞典))

nah.. I don't think anyone could have notice her dressed as a high schooler + pigtails + megane combo except for her wife and daughter. She can fool everyone, enough to attend school and fetch 2-3 basket full of boys.

One silly not-too-serious :p theory of mine is that all KyoAni/Key-Visual moms are
1) Either from the same family -
2) From the same town -
- where every girl grows up to be a MILF. :p
Can't decide who's cuter, Akiko-neechan of Kanon or Sanae-neechan.:upset: So confused. :heh:
You need a taste of Sanae's starfish bread topped with Akiko's Jam in order to clean your head.

Um, wouldn't that kill me? :heh:
Greatest bonus of scoring a cute mommy like Akiko-oneechan is not only an adorable missus, but becoming the dad of an adorable daughter as well. ;)
As for Sanae-oneechan... well, I'm no wife stealer, but I would like to drop a piano on Akio so I won't tecnically be a wife stealer. :p

This episode was very funny. Sunohara and Ryou would have made a cute fake couple, so would him and Yukina. The return of the flying dictionary was great. and an unexpected slap for Tomoya too. I have to agree he sounded like he was propositioning that one random girl. Even though I prefer Misae, I've also recognized quite early on how hot Sanae, those outfits just made her more so. Liked the running back to report bit too. Also something I noticed in the ending, looks like that old teacher the first one to scroll past is doing the Moon Walk makes me laugh everytime.
