Gave it an 8.
KyoAni did well to provide most of the characters with ample screentime, however Konata's dad and cousin Yui were painfully absent. I liked the Cherry and volleyball arcs the best. Still don't really get that pet shop one though.
The reason I didn't give it a higher score was that it didn't really feel as Lucky Star-ish as the main series for some reason. Hard to put my finger on it...I think because the scenes had more distinctive transitions and conclusions, and were longer than the skits found in the original 24 episodes. While I feel like I can pick up and watch any episode of the main series at random and enjoy it, I'm not sure I can say the same for the OVA.

@Eczema
Pet shop of horrors maybe? *shrugs* Nor have I watched it either. Though that came to mind first for some reason. And I am probably dead wrong as well. It had a Princess Resurrection/Monster feel to it as well.
I also gave it an 8/10. More like a 8.5 but meh.
Anywho.. though I feel that the the transition between each arc felt kinda random if not, non-sensical sometimes. Though that was my only complaint about this OVA. All in all it was a very enjoyable watch and I'll probably watch it again sometime later to catch some of the other references.
My favorite arc had to be the MMO one, kinda reminded me of myself. :D No, I'm not a nana-kon player type.. >.> Also nice to see little miyuki references too. :D
If any of this warrants a spoiler please let me know and I'll fix it promptly.
Just rewatched the OVA by EnA. Just a question about the Kagami dream scene...
When she wakes up, in this sub she says "I want to **** with Konata." But in the Pappika one, she says she wants to join bodies, but didn't specify with whom. Can anyone clarify this?
And the live-action Lucky Channel was okay, albeit a bit long. Akira's VA is cute, but it was weird putting a face to that voice.

About that scene:
There's two sects of thoughts as to what she actually says:
i) I want to unite/combine/*** with Konata.
ii) I want to cosplay.
Apparently, the key words involved is the first word which can be "Konata" or "anata" and the "blipped-out" part. I guess those who knows Japanese can explain better than me.
I thought Lucky Channel was alright. Even if you had seen the regular season, you've already seen the live VAs of Akira and Minoru. It's the fearsome foursome (and the rest) which we dun really get to see.
I gave it a 7/10 after the raw, keeping it the same after seeing subs. For one thing, it doesn't involve the usual sitting down and talking about topics which are endless and have no answers. And Yutaka and co was kept to that one scene.

Thank you for making a thread just for the OVA! These are no longer expectations or speculations.
I dunno. I think it really went overboard with the gratitous animuz references, but then, what do I know? D:
Somebody earlier in the thread said that it didn't feel very lucky-starish to them, and it was hard to tell why. I have that exact same feeling, though I can't isolate exactly why, but I suspect that I only really enjoyed it because it was more Lucky Star after a long hiatus. I don't know if I'll be watching it again.
Konata's dad needed more screentime, and I wish there had been some sembelence of a plot instead of "THESE ARE THE HOLIDAYS LET'S SEE WHAT WHACKY ADVENTURES THESE KIDS GET UP TO". Still, nyeh, it was still pretty cool.
Jebus though that Pet Shop of Horrors bit creeped me the fark out.
All in all, a 7/10.

Okay, maybe I forgot a few things or two. :heh:
The dog beating the geek girl and mmo/afk parts were the funniest of the ova. Pet shop was confusing.
So does it stop with the ova or is there another season coming (like School Rumble did)?

As we can't ever really know what Kagami is saying, it's more appropriate to leave it up to the viewer to speculate what she says.

Pretty enjoyable, still i would rather have a Karaoke ending than 6 minutes of live lucky channel.....
- the 1st story is really cute and relaxable. Love it ("Cherry-chan is cute. Cherry-chan is cute")
- Konata's mmorpg is fun to watch, most notably is the ENTER sreen (SHny referece is funny as well)
- Kagami's arc is pure win. Kagami+ Rin+ Miku = awesome. Can we consider the ending fan-service? :D
- Tsukasa and Miyuki arc are really good as well, feel just like LS TV
- Pet shop: lol at "Right now Miyuki is the Galatic Fairy". Macross eh...... ^^
10/10 for enjoyment and give me some good laugh. The ending was not worth to mention

I've decided to change my original vote from a 9/10 to a 10/10. Thanks to me watching the OVA over and the acquirement of better subs, the charm has started to grow on me a bit better.
Still, I feel a little annoyed by the lack of Yutaka, Minami, Hiyori and Patricia, but that's the only issue I have. The 6th scene despite how weird it is, is rather interesting as the cover the references and how things are handled in a strange manner. The 5th scene feels a bit sweeter and more genuine. Probably though the best thing I noticed from the new subs was in the 3rd scene.
When Misao hugs Kagami and you hear her mutter: Love. So cute. ^_^
I think it was a really good OVA. The best part was the MMO arc, seing Kagami play a game, and Tsukasa not knowing how to chat, was so cute.
And the Cinderella arc ended in such a fantastic way.
The Lucky Channel live was great too, the only thing that could have been better was Hiromi's facial expression, it wasn't very Akira-sama like.

"I want to **** with Konata."
This scene: Priceless. Especially with the drool coming off her mouth, and Tsukasa's reaction.
Looks like someone's been reading my mind..

I liked that scene too. :: icon point ::
I gave it a 9, mostly because I don't believe anything in this world is perfect....
.... except maybe my cat.
The OVA really didn't do anything below my expectations. I expected slightly better animation, got that. I expected a mindless tossing-together of random scenarios, got that. I also expected more fan-pandering and references, and we got that. Not that I really mind that stuff.
Though a lot of points made me laugh, nothing will top Tsukasa's reaction to Kagami's sleeptalking. That was so many points of awesome. As for what she really said, I'm as much in the dark as anyone, but that's okay. I'm a fan of Konata/Kagami, so I love loosely interpreted subtext. :P
That whole 'lost in the woods' thing was probably the most harrowing ordeal we've had to see the girls go through, if I think about it. Unless you count Comiket.
I've gotta find this new torrent. Till it comes out on DVD I'm gonna need something to go back to when the Lucky Star uge rises.
Being alone in the wood is far less frightening than being alone in a crowd.
Gave it an "8" (very good) because it was all over the place in terms of hilarious to banal to oddly arranged (the dog skit might have fared better in the middle).
So for many of the "10" moments there was were enough "6" moments to pull it down.

I gave it a 10 mainly for the fact, that I've been missing lucky star like a mad man. Also the fact that it just lived up to what I wanted to see. Especially the MMORPG part is one of the skits I enjoyed the most. Also hearing that it might really be turned into a game is news I'm still waiting on.

She's saying "cos tai" (I want to cos). Maybe it's the slurring that threw some people off (including Japanese, apparently, what with the "gattai" interpretation...), but it was easy to decipher to me.

It is either cosplay or combine.
If it is cosplay, that would be hilarious to see Kagami cosplaying. Miku's costume ACTUALLY fitted her LOL.
If it is combine, I think it would be a reference to Claymore's Luciela and Rafaela.
I am more for the first. Miku-Kagami is so cute.

Pretty much more of the same. Fans will love it. I thought it was just as hit-and-miss as the main series.
The Shaft-ish dream sequence was pure random, while in the mmorpg sequence it kept feeling like each joke was exactly one line too long. The volleyball sequence and lost-in-the-wilderness sequence didn't do much for me, but I seriously lol'd at the punch line of the Kagami dream sequence.

(Though I could have done without the live action lucky channel.)

MMO part was the best :D

I gave it an 8.
Pretty had all the good and bad from the first season. Some good stories. Some so-so stories. But like the main series, over all an entertaining watch. Shame they didn't get all the characters some screen time.
I was thinking "Omg where the heck is the manga store owner... They HAVE to have him in here somewhere" half way through the OVA. And then the 'AFK scene' came on and it was great.
I also liked the whole dream story. Probably my second favorite scene.
The live action Lucky Channel was weird. I applaud them for trying something new with Lucky Channel skit because it was getting sorta old, but the Live Action didn't really do anything for me.
Overall very enjoyable though. Can't wait to see if they'll do another OVA or anything.
7/10. It was enjoyable.
I agree with everyone who said that it doesn't really feel that Lucky-Star-ish. I also can't seem to find out the reason why I have that feeling.
My favourite arcs are the Volleyball arc and the MMO. Animate arc was short, but sweet.
The pet shop arc was really weird. It was confusing; maybe because it was full of references.
References I noticed:
Toilet no Hanako (maybe)
Code Geass
(I am Zero!)
(I will use you up like a ragged cloth!)
Sgt. Keroro
Macross
(Aya Endo, Galactic fairy)

I think there was a Fate/Stay Night reference in the dream one. One of the costumes was Rin Tohsaka... Anyone care to confirm?
Where was the Soul Eater reference. I missed that.
just watched the episode and.. really, it was nice seeing the 4 main cats again, plus, 4 secondaries and two bangumi's :heh:
overall the episode is great. I felt each main had their time to shine brightly this time round. Kagami and Konata was kind of 'usual' since they were the ones i always notice back in the anime, but, it's still nice. Miyuki and Tsukasa OTOH did great, I pretty much prefer Balsamic's development here simply b;coz 'I've always been following onee-chan's shadow' 'i need to give it all i got' due to Misao's motivation she shined well. The volley match was really sweet and touching, too bad she missed to spike the ball. Which i expected and imo it wouldn't be right if she had successfully hit it.. but still XD for Miyuki, i guess it was her 'reliably calm' onee-chan figure that did it for me, when they were lost she was like.. 'calm down everyone.. we'll be just fine.we'll find the camp soon.' despite her own worries she tries to her best to not say anything negative that will add uneasiness to her companions. Then when her story telling ended, her conversation with her mom made me go "aww..." she seems really happy-shy about it.
the secondary didn't do much but, they were one of the ingredients that spice this ova for me. Specially the RPG gemu, i lol'd at Nanakon for being lvl.15 after their short trip. I knew she has nothing to do during the whole vacation thing :heh:
but seriously, if you can gain that much stats in just getting to lvl.15 gaming would be much more easier XD but i guess that falls in the same category as konata's magic-ala-cinderella-Kagami.
speaking of that.. does that mean Kagami is only 12?
I seem to recall reading that.. oh that was Casper movie when Casper was told Cinderella was 12 years old, thus, the magic will wear off when the clock strikes midnight. Whereas, Casper is 10-11 years old so he only have till 10-11pm.
Oh well.. the LuckyChannel was also funny. i find it more enetertaining the actual animated LC segment.
gave it 10/10 for the fanservice moe.

Yeah yeah, the 3rd costume is Rin Tohsaka. Maybe people claim her as the original tsundere.
It was during the Pet Shop scene when Kagami advised the Konata: "This cat isn't a witch or anything." Kagami's seiyuu also does the voice of Blair from Soul Eater, who isn't a witch. Just a really, powerful kitty.
There's also the three Haruhi references with the pose in the MMO, the return on Konata in the Yuki-Magician outfit and the return of Koi no Mikuru Densetsu on Konata's cell phone.
And there has to be some kind of reference with what Konata's singing in the first scene. According the new, EnA subs, she's singing: "No, because I am a Scorpio woman, I'll laugh heartily until I'm satisfied."

Hard to tell...I can't think of too many tsundere mikos or maids. (Though I get this vibe similar to Kagami and Rei Hino from Sailor Moon)

Very, very meh. Some very funny spots (the entire Hatsune Miku segment), but also some awkward dead time (various people petting Cherry). Nothing special, feels like any 40-minutes L*S episode.
yeah, I've pretty much decided the Cherry segment was a long parody of a date-sim game with the dog as the protagonist. I would have placed it second or third in the sequence -- it might have fared better there.

I don't want to know the connection between her cookies and what Cherry was smelling!
We're talking about a species of creature that greet each other by sniffing butts (which actually conveys a lot of information about health, what they've eaten, and their personal unique scent --- like a doggie business card exchange :P).

In the manga, Cherry "mauled" Hiyori, and Hiyori wondered if that was because of the scent coming from her dog. Then, Cherry mauled her a second time after she took up Minami's suggestion to have some food with her while trying to pet Cherry.
Anyway, this OVA was somehow weaker than the series. I didn't get too much laughs out of it. The only arc which I really enjoyed was the MMORPG arc. Then again, it took me a while to get the AFK joke in the tenchou segment.

Slightly jabbing into another topic: If KyoAni really wants to make money, I suppose they can release one OVA every half year, making apt parodies from every two anime seasons. I'm sure they won't run short of money if they do that.
Then again, I would rather see Haruhi S2 first.

Would a bi-annual OVA really set them back so far on HS2? They seem to have been taking their time with it all along as it is....

They're doing Clannad: After Story, which <personalopinion> is a terrible series to do a sequel for because it simply puts more "absolutely nothing happens" over "nothing happens"</personalopinion>. After that they'll probably do HS2.

I kind of get the impression the studio is "on the beach" mentally this season -- though I'm sure putting out Afterstory is as challenging as other series.
IF they're working on the script for HS2 - I can see them wanting to take a long time to get it right. Of course, I'm assuming there's a team squirreled away actually doing that. :P

It was enjoyable. Especially the MMO part, which was refreshing but maybe somewhat hard to follow at first but I didn't really laugh until at the end of the next arc.
It was just plain hilarious when Kagami suddenly woke up after dreaming about that figter's ball(?!?) and sayed... what ever I imagined her to say and then the reaction of Tsukasa. :D She sounded like Apacahi from Kenichi for a while. :D
I had kind of hoped that this OVA would have continued the "story" somehow, but oh well, it worked like this too. :)

Not having played an MMO before, I had to have a friend tell me how to attack something, much less realizing how to talk. :heh:

I didn't get much of what was happening. I mean, what the heck was that pet shop scene. The weird frogs, the little pop up writing, the dude who was like a zombie, said his name was zero, then appeared as a magician, and the girl appeared as different forms of frogs. Then it stopped randomly. And would it have been too much trouble to actually make sense. It was like a really bad crack-fic, made by a half-drunken lemur. The only thing I liked was the part where Konata freak Tsukasa out with stick, and when Tsukasa nailed herself in the face with the net. (Tsukasa's my favorite character, next to Misao.) So I give it an average,
It was a cultural reference; a parody. So if you didn't know the reference it would make no sense. That can be a problem when watching any foreign film.
No, that segment wasn't terribly funny but the entire rest of the OVA was better.
People tend to view things on the internet thinking they're meant for international audience.
Alot of anime were badly reviewed because they are viewing it with a wrong mindset and background knowledge.
I always think things that I can't understand, I won't judge. One should only judge after understanding what they've seen. Once you understand everything then you can judge whether its good or bad.
Anyway, Tenchou's item list has a full list of Fate/Stay Night weapons.

Correct C.A.!!
So many of my friends disiss many anime as horrible simply because they don't get it
I esspecially see this occur when it comes to lucky star, as many references and jokes are missed by the general audience

I wonder how they're planning on releasing it.... it isn't really long enough for a stand-alone DVD...

I know right. I'm hoping they throw in a translation of the radio shows, kinda of like how Funi did with Burst Angel. That new Kagami Figma as an extra would also be nice, but that's just fantasy. Volume 1 of the manga included would be pretty nice though too.
Guess we'll have to wait to find out. Who knows, it might even turn up included with volume 6 of the dvds for all we know.
It's hard to believe but I just found out about the OVA. I don't think there's a lot of cultural references from what I've heard but I have to see it first. I've been out of anime for so long it's hard imagine being so into it again (although I still watch J-news and J-shows like London Hearts). Only 5 page of discussion surprised me though... perhaps L*S fanbase isn't what it used to be. If I see some interesting non-otaku cultural references I write something I guess.
The cultural references are pretty straight forward for the most part except for the one really surrealistic petshop segment that almost no one outside of Japan might get.
If you know how eroge games tend to play out -- then the first sketch about the dog is understood (though its not a rib-tickler).
The MMO sketch pretty much fits MMO play of any kind but particularly freeplay-cashshop MMOs popular in Japan and elsewhere.
The volleyball sketch is just a nice bit of character definition and bonding with a few "fourth wall" gags about secondary characters.
and so on (including a bit of implied KxK yuri) .... the Lucky Channel live-action piece was just silly tomfoolery by our two voice-acting stars..... though Akira-chan's VA doesn't really get to totally cut loose as much as I'd hoped.
Welcome back, AVPlaya. It's been a while. :)

Wait a minute...is the surrealistic style itself referencing something? I thought it was just somebody on drugs making up stuff about Keroro Gunso, Code Geass, and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (or similar parody of "oldies" Japanese film style), among other series that were popular at the moment.

Ah...didn't know that's supposed to be an eroge staple. I really should go play Little Busters. >_>
Meh, I exagerrated while sleepy... I've not found a specific movie that the pet shop sketch might refer to but here's a collection of the references all posters think they've spotted so far:
1) Toilet no Hanako (maybe)
2) Code Geass: (I am Zero!)
3) Code Geass: (I will use you up like a ragged cloth!)
4) Sgt. Keroro
5) Macross (Aya Endo, Galactic fairy)
6) Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (Patty -"Zetsuboushita!" )
7) Soul Eater (Kagami advised the Konata: "This cat isn't a witch or anything." Kagami's seiyuu also does the voice of Blair from Soul Eater, who isn't a witch. Just a really, powerful kitty.)
I would lay money that the overall skit is a reference to some oddball film or film genre though. Just haven't spotted it.
Well I've finally watched the OVA and I see a ton of anime/otaku references as usual... the are some really difficult cultural references but I did spot them (they did it on purpose I'm sure)... these guys really like cheezy tarentos and manzai comedians. I can recongize neta from at least 3 different comedians.... I especially enjoy the one Shiraishi sneaked in there at the end of Lucky Channel... when he screamed "Sutaffuu!" he was doing a parody of the currently infamous comedian "Kimoi Ikemen" Kano Eikou. Boy that dude was hilariously disgusting. I have to really dig where that Konata parody "Heaven has forsaken me!" line came from.. turn out to be an obscure movie called "Hakkoda san" or Mount Hakkoda , which depicted a true story of a group of Japanese soldiers training for WWII who got lost and freeze to death on Mount Hakkoda in Aimori Prefecture. Supposedly that was the famous line from the movie, and aptly appropriate for the scene. I think there's enough neta for a good post but I really have to do a lot of research... especially about some really dumb 笑い芸人 who could get famous in Japan for doing one dumb neta over and over again.

Please elaborate. I can't find such mention anywhere.
Please elaborate. I can't find such mention anywhere.
It doesn't surprise me since I doubt many otaku watches mainstream shows... I dunno if I can find anything on the net to prove it either. It's this neta he has where he believe he's a big shot ikeman tarento, and he would scream to his "staff" for stuff like water in the manner Shiraishi does it, hand by the side of the mouth etc. Come to think of it, my goodness, Shiraishi even DRESSED like him.... Ever wonder why Shiraishi is suddenly in an ugly white suit? I guess you have to really be a regular view of London Hearts and other shows these tarento frequents to know how aweful he is... he has this most self-centered, pretentious and shallow presona which many believe is actually his own.
Here's what this douche Kano Eikou (狩野英孝) looks like:

Maybe I'm wrong on this but even my wife said Shiraishi is parodying this guy....
PS.. I feel so embarrassed about knowing so much about this... I must be more productive in my life like watching more anime.
This may be old news to some but I noticed this on the Bandai North America site:
March 2, 2009 (Cypress, CA) – Bandai Entertainment Inc. and Kadokawa Pictures USA announced at Wondercon that the LUCKY STAR OVA would be released in North America.
Based on the manga by Kagami Yoshimizu, Lucky Star has already been adapted to anime as a 24 episode series currently available on DVD from Bandai Entertainment and Kadokawa Pictures USA. The OVA (Original Video Animation) features short anime vignettes of the series characters. Lucky Star's main character is Konata Izumi, a lazy high school girl who isn't interested in anything besides anime and video games.
Information on the release date and spec TBD.
I have no information on when it might be released.....
I thought the OVA was very satisfying. In response to the thought about what people have said, I think the cherry one was fine in it's location. It's simple and allows for all the characters to be show right away, as well as that it is one of the more 'normal' lucky star skits. In my opinion, only that one and the lost in the woods skit were closer to regular lucky star. The MMO, Dream, and Pet Shop ones were very different in content that normal lucky star, and I don't think they would have fared well first. The Volleyball one wouldn't have fit too well there either, but maybe that's a possibility... But it stays in the same place the whole time.
As far as canon, is it possible that, if L*S never moves to a second season, them turning into frogs will be the official anime ending? At no place does it ever say it's a dream or a hallucination.

According to Bandai at AnimeExpo 2009 (http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/convention/2009/anime-expo/bandai-entertainment), the OVA will be sub only...
I don't know the reasoning behind this, only that it will make me really ponder whether or not I'll purchase it...

Not an urgent buy for me then as I already have it on DVD and have access to subs for it. Not to mention I still only have the first of the Bandai DVDs as I was waiting for it to come out in the UK (doesn't look like it ever will, but now I just don't have the money).

If Lucky Star ever got a season 2, you know you're gonna get some Endless Eight rants from Konata. -u-
KyoAni has been Meta enough with the first season I can see that happening.

It would be pretty funny, though. Director fail, lulz. Even though some saw Endless Eight as a grueling waste of time. :p
About the volleyball scene in the OVA, what is Konata talking about that she thinks is "Cultural literacy for the Japanese"? In the scene where Kagami hits the ball into Tsukasa's face and Tsukasa decided to start trying harder, and when the music starts playing
Something about:
The little girl is crying, her tears are coming out or something XD
Kagami: Huh?
Konata: WHAT?! Isn't this a common saying?
Kagami: Only you would say that...
