I'm looking for a manga series with a mood similar to Gurren Lagann as in it can go from very inspirational to very depressing and vice versa (often in the same episode). Code Geass would be another example, especially the end. Oh, and Violinist Of Hameln is another good example.
+ Necessary: Male main character, who is at the very least somewhat awesome/kick-ass)
+ Preferable: Important female character.
- Necessary: No shounen/shoujo ai or gender benders.
