Damn....still no new opening this episode. Rachel is cute, but the new loli Medusa is even cuter. Evil Loli FTW! This episode was all about the buildup.
And some comedy, of course. Medusa is in chibi form, but she still is creepy. Also, chibi-medusa doing a curtsey.....KAWAI!!!!!!!!!!!!
1.5 chapters this time.
Maka said she won't be appearing next week. That's a fairly substantial cut...
The lack of opening is becoming a trifle annoying I am afraid

Oh well I guess the new OP will come one day :heh:.Find it hard to see the new Medusa as cute considering what she's done. Taking a kids body like that just keeps putting her higher on the list of people I want finished for good this time. Bad enough she ruins her own kids life, but now ruins the life of some other innocent child?
Situation with Black Star is a bit worse than I expected. Thought he wouldn't take that complete loss to Mifune well. Now he's going around on his own fighting duels against various teams in Shibusen. Leaving Tsubaki behind while he does this. On one side winning by himself is pretty impressive, but its not smart to be distancing himself from his partner. This will clearly lead to some problem down the road.
Overall was a good episode with building things up. The team soul resonance looks pretty promising in theory. I say theory since practise involved them trying to kill each other while trying to kill Stein.

Seems like a build-up for another BlackStar x Tsubaki moment is coming up.

Medusa is back!! :D
Though I have to agree with FlareKnight...ruining that poor child's life like that...and I also always wondered why she chose to possess a child's body rather than an adult...maybe she is trying to make full use of the cute/loli factor :heh:
Still, I like her character enough for her not to be killed but just remember that this comes at the cost of someone else's life ;_____;
The fight between mosquito and chainsaw was awesome!
I wished they did a full on fight lol...

She didn't really have a choice in the matter. She gabbed the first body she found. Well...the second body, actually. The first one was to dog. It could have been anyone, she didn't seek out a little girl in particular. And some people act like it's the first time a little kid was possessed in an anime.
I kinda got the impression that she was going to possess the mother but she woke up too soon and then Medusa aborted the plan and claimed to have had a nightmare...

She could have taken the loss maturely and died. She's been alive for hundreds of years time to move on. Or she could have stayed as that snake. Sure she jumped on the first opportunity that came along, but there is nothing saying she had to act right then. What are we going to do blame the victim for being in the wrong place?
Taken the loss maturely? Sensible, and understandable.
But Medusa isn't sensible in the usual sense of the word. True, she could have died and let Spirit take her soul, but I don't think that even came to mind once she was cut in two. I'm saying that mostly because I don't think resurrecting the Kishin was ever Medusa's ultimate goal. If that was the case, 'sensible' for her would be to survive however possible (snake transformation, possessing dog and now child...) and continue her machinations.
Even if getting Asura back was Medusa's only intention, wouldn't she want to take the chance, any chance, to experience this world of madness she'd started into being? Certainly seemed all for such a thing during the fight with Stein. *shrug*

Uhm...Medusa is THE BAD GUY! You are talking as if she is NOT the one who: abused and broke her own chlild, turned said child into a walking weapon, planned and completed the resurrection of THE most evil beeing on the planet, not to mention all the stuff she did in between. Why WOULD she accept her death? Bottom line: she jumped in the first human body she found. Could have been ANYONE. Hell, could have been a meister. She dosen't care. She did EXACTLY what someone like her would do. If she had jubt accepted death THAT would have been wierd for her, seeing as she always puts herself first.

No one's blaming the victim, that was a response to the question about why she chose a child not a defense of her actions. Going by what was said in the ep I think it was because her soul is still weak and a child is easier to control, and also because a child's body is good for deceiving people and if it comes down to it using as a hostage like you said. It may have just been convenience though...
And suddenly a sub released not from the usual group .. I let you guys decide if it worth it :p

I really just hope she gets out of that body. Some reason really didn't like it when it happened and probably went overboard on reaction to it.
Besides how can they get a rematch with her against anyone in that tiny body? I mean could you see Stein+Marie vs chibi Medusa :heh:?

Heh, we'll Medusa's not stupid that's for sure. She's knows that even though the hero's know she's pure evil, they'll still hold back cause they see a child's form.
Heh my pure speculation
It would be awesome if she actually took Arachne's body after a huge fight and she's at her weakest. That would give her a powerful body AND the coup de grace on her older sister.

That's interesting. Lead up to a plot with medusa, oh wait, no nevermind. Haha I don't mind, Kid is pretty freaking awesome I must say.
Does anyone know if this will be an 'unfinished anime' series, or will there be a second season? Because it seems there's a whole lot of seperate stories and plots running around that I'd doubt/hope get resolved in only 20 episode.

My opinion is unfinished , just like Kekkaishi. I don't know about second season , but just hope it will.
But it'll different if the manga ends after this Baba Yaga arc. I'd rather the anime being unfinished than the manga series end only until Baba Yaga.
Wait. Can we talk about something like this on this thread? -_-"
You know, I wonder if Medusa had a much better childhood then Chrona, she realy did seem a sad when she was eating.

If she even had a childhood...
That was another good episode of Soul Eater. Little Medusa was just too cute, but I hope in the end the mother will get her Rachel back.
I'm kinda impressed with character development of BlackStar and Tsubaki. In the beginning BlackStar was just a spoiled brat, who didn't take any fight seriously and Tsubaki a weapon without selfconfident, who just followed BlackStar's "orders". And now? BlackStar is much more serious, wants to protect his friends and is fighting against higher ranked teams on his own in order to become stronger. Tsubaki became more selfconfident. When BlackStar wanted her to switch into "Fey Blade"-mode to fight against the Kishin she rejected and in the last episode she used smoke bomb on her own in order to protect BlackStar. I'm really looking forward for more development of and between those two.

Have medusa back is good, except i does not like her at all, really. Now she decide to return to Death City to take something she left there (probably Stein himself), which would make the plot more interesting.
But took over a child mind and body is not cool (especially when we probably would have a screen in the future of "you can't kill me because you will kill this child"). Rachel is so sweet as well.
We also need a longer fighting screen of the main casts. Show their final-threshold-overwhelming-ultimate power for once, or they would seems to be suddenly much stronger during boss fight . If we ever have one
^ I can't exactly agree with you about the fighting thing. SE has held my attention partly because the fights rarely last more than an episode, unlike a lot of other shounen anime. But I'm sure there'll be tons of fights in the future, so no need to worry about a shortage.

8/10. I would have given it higher, but the fact that Medusa stole that poor little girl's body is utterly evil and repugnant. I thought it was interestign to see the tension between Medusa and Arachne, and perhaps a bit of Medusa's lack of foresight. However, I am glad that they don't get along, because it would be insanely difficult on our heroes if they worked cooperatively.

Since I doubt the holding a child's body hostage thing would work in that situation :heh:. Suppose she thinks its possible to use Medusa in some way, though underestimating Medusa can be a dangerous thing.
It amazes me that it had probably been a day since BlackStar lost to Mifune and decided to get stronger. It looks like he's been training ever since.
Yet Soul and Maka, who whine every fight about not being strong enough are still sitting on their asses doing nothing.

If you lose just train yourself into the ground until your strong enough to win. He might be going a big overboard challenging teams around the school on his own, but that's the way he is. More of a person who acts than one who sits around thinking about it. At least it sets up some interesting future situations. Both with pushing himself too far and acting alone away from Tsubaki.
Nice that Kid will be getting an episode next time though. Probably had less developments than the Maka or BlackStar teams.

Constant physical training has always been Black Star's thing. Like Stein pointed out a while back, different teams have different ways of getting stronger.

Well I wonder about that. They whine about being strong for the sake of the others , different from Black Star. I have to say it's their style. Accepting fear and being stronger from courage.

Why not have your cake and eat it too?
We have loli-medusa running around, and adult-medusa in Stein's head. Everybody wins
@ Anh-minh - You are to hope that she acquires a sexy body again? Bit difficult considering it got cut to bits and then vanished but, you know, one can always hope.... ;)
Seriously, though, I think Medusa needs to get something like her old body back, if only to free that little girl.
She could probably make a new body for herself. She is a mad scientist after all.

Seriously, though, I think Medusa needs to get something like her old body back, if only to free that little girl.Yeah someone get the woman a new body already. Then the next time Stein+Spirit take her down they can be sure to get the job done right :heh:. Meaning that in the kindest way possible of course.
Anyways this episode really shows how bad things are getting. Asura as it is would be considered a disaster to have come back. Now you've got Medusa bringing herself back from oblivion and Arachne also returning with a dangerous organisation.

Yep, Shinigami's got old enemies popping up left right and centre. Just what did he do before Shibusen to get these kind of baddies after his people?
And on Medusa, if Stein gets to take her on again, Spirit had darn well better take the snake-witch's soul this time. I wonder if what Medusa did to save herself isn't very common, considering there are at least a few Death Scythes around, and IIRC Medusa was said by someone (Eruka??) to be a powerful witch.
She takes on the whole Shibusen with only 4 lackeys and succeeded in her mission. I said she's a damn powerful witch (or at least a worthy opponent).
Yes, I know she is a powerful witch, I was merely wondering whether it was common for witches to be able to escape having their souls taken in the way Medusa did.
Fenrir_valindri
2008-10-25, 12:29
From what I gather from the episode itself, what Medusa did was only possible because of her proximity to the Kishin's awakening. What she did would have destroyed her soul under any other circumstances.
So I doubt it is a common occurance, otherwise Stein and Spirit would at least question her survival, but pretty much everyone at Shibusen seems certain she is dead.

What he did before Shibusen? He hunted down witches of course. Which is why all the witches hate him, perfectly understandable. He still does. It's also Mifune's entire motivation: Angela will never be safe in a world where the Shinigami and his minions hunt witches. From this perspective, it's actually a bit difficult to see why he's supposed to be the good guy. It's not too hard to see Arachnophobia as a revolution against a tyrannical dictator.
Asura himself seems to be an effect of the Shinigami not instilling the proper values in his meisters. Hence him creating a school afterwards and indoctrinating them from childhood. Look at Stein: he's violent and crazy but kept in check entirely from his almost religious faith in God's (Shinigami's) law. Notice him chanting the "healthly soul" mantra to himself in episode 28. Shibusen is brainwashing people. Also note that their primary worry about Asura is his insane wavelength triggering other enemies to act, not him actually doing anything in particular. Shinigami is order, and the Kishin is chaos.
As for Medusa, she's obviously one of the higher-level witches because she has absolutely no fear of witch society's laws (or anything else for that matter). Plus, she's stronger one-on-one than the greatest Death Scythe-Meister combo. And yes, it's been specifically pointed out that her surviving was a nearly impossible feat.
That's a neat clarification, though I should have made my question clearer. I know Shinigami hunted witches, but what I want to know is why this is the case. Yes, he's considered to be 'order', and Kishin/witches 'chaos', but how did this come about?
The past few episodes have given us centuries of conflict and history for Shinigami and his school, but no real explanation behind it all. Or is it just the usual 'good versus evil', and there's no point in me thinking there's more to it than that?
JunkKitty
2008-10-25, 15:20
I think it's been suggested and even directly said on a few occasions that Shinigami's intention is to protect humans and human society from the destructive nature of witches (and others).
It makes sense in a way. Shinigami seems to want humans to live healthy, happy lives to produce healthy souls when they die. Now, we don't know why Shini cares or what happens to normal souls post-death, but since Shini is more based on the western Grim Reaper figure than anything else, I think the idea of him having an interest in human souls fits well.
Witches (historically/in general) don't respect human lives and and seem to *want* to experiment on/abuse/torment them, thus Shini and the witches are at odds.
Shinigami also wasn't too keen on killing Angela. He did keep trying to tell blackstar about the problem with takeing her soul and he had no problems with blackstar letting her be.

A reply for the 'leaving Tsubaki alone discussion.'
Its been said in the 2 encounters with Mifune that Tsubaki is a really good weapon but however it is Black star himself that isn't *good enough* yet. Which is why Black star is training alone. He blames himself and not being strong enough for not winning.

Black Star's power is unbelivable, even Stein stated that him carrying a weapon would cause the whole room to blow up, if his wavelength is that high at such a young age imagine him when he is 18, he would probably have a wavelength greater than Stein with a weapon if he continues like this and if Tsubaki becomes stronger as well and then becomes a Death Scythe the two would probably be enough to take down an opponent like Medusa with no problem.

He blames himself and not being strong enough for not winning. That could be it. Mifune has hit the point home especially in the first match that Black Star hasn't met up with the level of Tsubaki as a weapon. Maybe he is just trying to improve himself so him not being strong enough won't be what causes them to lose. Though obviously the point would be not to lose again :heh:.
Of course that solo activity is worrying Tsubaki. Could almost see some turn around to what Black Star said in episode 10. Back then talked about her being able to rely on him more and expect next time it will be that he can rely on her more. All about teamwork in the end.
Still the potential of that team is pretty impressive. There is still more to Tsubaki and she can get more powerful. But also just the natural progression for Black Star should mean he'll get even stronger.

Medusa is back noug said. Man Stein is going to be PISSED OFF he barely beat her the first time or he could be very happy somewhere deep deep down. Like i said before things arent looking so good for our heros atm
On the one hand, he sees her as an annoying, especially adept opponent (which I can't imagine Stein had seen many of recently). On the other, Medusa is the perfect opportunity for Stein to exercise some of his less-than-pleasant habits with total justification.
I'd love to see those two come to blows again, especially now Stein's in an even more unstable state than usual; it comes down to the basics of their relative madness and sadism, but the stakes have changed. Spirit, the poor bloke, would probably hate to be between them once again. Should have been born a Technician, then, shouldn't he?

Remember, Stein's paired with Marie now (so that Spirit will never have to leave Shinigami unarmed). Not too important, but many people seem to forget that a rematch wouldn't involve Spirit.

Honestly, does anyone know anything about Arachne's motivations? She's so calm about EVERYTHING and finds a postitive in everything. I think the only thing she's shown any signs of anger towards is Medysa. I don't think she simply wants revenge or else she would have killed Medusa there and then.

great ep, seeing it animated makes Medusa even more evil and sinister than I thought. right now I'm hoping they'll send the series with the conclusion of the current arc in the manga. Otherwise it's gonna be really disappointing.
