I'm enjoying this series thoroughly. I don't think it is necessarily the setting or features (distant Japan, samurai, etc.), but more so the characters and episodic stories. I don't think a generic slice of life really fits... I don't really know. The episodic adventure and the humor, along with the morals and stories in each episode keep me hooked. Anyone who enjoyed the show care to give some other suggestions?

Well, the same studio in charge of Samurai Champloo has put out a new show, Michiko to Hatchin (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=5779), that seems very similar, in style if nothing else, to Champloo.
That being said, check out Cowboy Bebop (http://anidb.net/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=23), if you haven't, since Samurai Champloo is, in many respects,a remake of Cowboy Bebop.

Black Lagoon-both seasons with the modern day crew of skilled/untamed protagonists having guns at their heads and swords at their throats through and through.
Maybe Rurouni kenshin OVAs though only trust and betrayal is the most action packed
Other stuff like claymore, seirei no morbito, TTGL, Darker than black, has a hint of Champloo but no cigar
Seconding Michiko to Hatchin and Cowboy Bebop. I mean, if you haven't seen the latter, run out and get it. NOW. :D

Well, Samurai Champloo was one of only two series directed by Shinichiro Wanatabe. The other he directed was Cowboy Bebop.
However, if it's purely the episodic/humour/moral nature you're looking for - well, if you can handle something that isn't action loaded but very concentrated in those three qualities mentioned just before - Mushishi may be what you're looking for.
