I knew it will be licensed sooner or later. Better save money for upcoming release. Thanks for the info.
/me rejoices and jumps around the place.
Except for my wallet and credit card. They are terrified, weeping in a corner and embracing each other .
Can't say I wasn't expecting this. XD They better make Kotomi a freaking god voice actress, though.
I can also say with complete certainty that season 2 will be liscenced, eventually. Can't only show 1/2 a story. XD

Awesome, gonna get these on release date rather than wait like i did with Kanon and that was a mess heh, alot easier for me over in the UK to get them from Amazon.

I'm actually a little surprised it took this long...
But, either way, I'm definitely planning on buying this one.
Why do I have a feeling that the dubs will be terrible?
Why does it actually matter that much whether the dubs will be good or bad, when this is a subbing community and most of us will be watching it via the dvd subs anyway?

My only issue with DVD subs is the translation...
Of course, unlike Haruhi, this show doesn't use a lot of in-verse jargon, so subs should be relatively the same as the fan translations.
Oh, and Sunohara better be voiced by Vic Mignogna. That would be awesome.

Why do I have a feeling that the dubs will be terrible?
Well, I don't think it will. I've just finished the Kanon dub recently and I was definitely very happy with it, and I hope they get the same director (Kyle Jones) for Clannad. I've got a bit of a stronger attachment to the Japanese VA's with Clannad, but I'm still really excited about Clannad getting a dub.
I'm really excited about the license in general, actually. Nice that it's finally happening, and just as I'm getting into more Clannad with After Story. I think, provided ADV gets the first series out without any problems, that the licensing of After Story will be a sure thing eventually. Looking forward to owning it all.

Some people do like to watch both. I tend to anticipate watching dubs of series that I've previously seen fansubbed. That's the great thing about bilingual DVD's - don't like one track, then you can ignore it, and if you like both, then it's even more fun. :)

Well, this had been announced at a random con a few weeks back, so I'm not surprised, but at least now, we FINALLY have some official, undeniable proof. I, for one, am totally gonna buy the DVDs, as ADV did a great job with Air, and from what I heard, Kanon was done really well too, though I can't say for sure, as I didn't have time to buy the singles before ADV lost the rights. Anyway, I can't wait to see the show the way it's supposed to be, seeing how all the TV-broadcasts were flawed in one way or another.

They haven't announced pricing yet have they?I imagine that it will be similar to what Kanon was priced at... :D
Hopefully it'll get sold as a box set, I mean really. It's more market friendly.
If it's boxed set only, you wouldn't see anything until late 2009, at least. But then, you'd get all of it at the time, so...

Please no Vic I wnna punch that guy so hard in the face. I agree the translations fans provide I find are supieror than the ones that are on licensed versions. When watching Kanon I even noticed odd translations. It is also too bad that they don't have the quality of japanese DVD releases with goodies and pacaking. I own R1 and R2 air because the japanese ones are much more beautiful.
They just shouldn't realease a dub track IMO and release it as a big set.

Vic is awesome. Play Persona 3.
And not all DVD subs are really that bad. The only one that really sticks out in my mind was Haruhi's, which uses a completely different translation than the actual dub did...

One thing I'm wondering is if they will cast Clannad without reusing any of the VA's for major characters in Air and Kanon (Kanon did not reuse any any of the major VA's from Air). That would be nice in my opinion.
I've been thinking about either Hilary Haag or Carrie Savage for Nagisa.

I wonder who's going to play Tomoya and Youhei. I have an idea that Jason Liebrecht and Todd Haberkorn could play them respectively.
A new thread has been created for the discussion of English Voice Actors in the R1 release of CLANNAD TV. Please continue any further discussion in that thread :)

Second: Clannad is licensed. See the thread in this sub-forum. Don't know the release date. I think somebody knows this.
Edit: 1st DVD will be released on April 2009.
Geez, almost half a year from now? I think if they stop planning to make the stupid English dub, then it's gonna be faster.

Or maybe if they want to actually sell DVDs they should make their "stupid" dub...?
Simply just live in the another country and it will not be bothering you. Or buy original DVD. Simple.

Without "stupid English dub" the title will have a low sales number and will remain in the super-niche area. That also mean the chance of season season getting license will be lower too.

Geez... it makes me sad to think some people would be ignorant enough to not realize that picture is a JOKE (and a really lame joke at that). There is absolutely no chance that any popular KyoAni title coming over here is going to suffer from name changes or massive script rewrites, especially with reputable companies like Bandai and ADV producing the English version.

I was talking in the context of their faithfulness to the original Japanese version, particularly the people that think they adapt like 4Kids does on a regular basis (which is just ridiculous).
Provided you're not getting the limited edition stuffed with extra trinkets (and in that case, you have a choice to decide whether they're worth it or not), the retail prices on Lucky Star and Haruhi are normal and there's nothing wrong with them at all.
That's awesome! I guess it's not surprising since ADV manage to acquire the other 2 Key Visual animes (Kanon and AIR). Well, I'm sure I'll be waiting for the first volume.

Being that the Kanon-problems were due to ADV's money-partner constantly giving them trouble, and that they're no longer working with those guys, I'd say the chances of that happening again are really freaking small. Rather, "non-existent", really.

No LE editions for clannad?
None of the series had those in America. They only released one set of singles, plus the "DVD + box"-release for volume 2, which obviously won't be necessary here.

Glad to see it's finally solicited on rightstuf and amazon.
About the sub-only, I thought I read somewhere that it was planned for that...but going back and reading the John Ledford interview on icv2, he also mentions that "ADV will bring out the first of six DVDs next April" so obviously plans change.
Well, I'm one person tossing in my hat for actually preferring the release is sub-only.
No LE editions for clannad?
Only Bandai does those pimped out LE's, for the most part.

And they just canceled the last Lucky Star LE volume. :(
They are scrambling to survive after the big layoffs where they let go people who have been there for a decade. :eyespin:
Seems like all the companies are in survival mode trying to stay open.

I did too. Seems they got their shipment from ADV really early, huh? Anyway, I most certainly won't complain about getting it before the release-date. so with that in mind, I can only say one thing: YAY!!!!:D

no complaints on my end either :)
Ugh. I've been having some issues with disk one. Episodes three and four (I haven't bothered trying episodes five and six) have skipping issues, rendering them unplayable around the halfway mark of each.
I hope this isn't widespread, because they last thing Sentai/ADV can afford is a screw up of that magnitude. Either way, I figure I'd ask here if anyone else experiences the same issues. I'm going to be calling RSi tomorrow to see if they've heard anything and determine whether I want a refund or a replacement then.

I haven't heard anyone else mentioning this, at least, and there are quite a few people over on Mania.com who got the set early, so you were probably just unlucky, I think.
Mine works fine :). Got it yesterday and marathoned the first disc. There is no dub (no complaints from me about this, I really really dread those dubs. Just one bad VA for one of the main characters can mess it up for me.) and no special features like the kyoani production extras in the Kanon discs(these I really miss and wish for). Really just a modest case. I'd have liked a limited edition box or something. I wish there were more kyoani merchandise. If there were a shirt with just a Kyoani or Clannad or Air logo that wasn't too otaku'ish(the lucky star shirts are just for collecting for me...), I would actually buy and wear that out in public...

So, I got the set yesterday and just finished watching up to episode 9... Everything worked fine with me, and I'd say ADV/Sentai Filmworks has done an excellent job. The video-quality is great, the translations are pretty good, and the price is also great. I also liked how they left the opening/ending-credits in japanese, and instead just added a translated credit-scroll after the next episode-previews. And as a random side-note, the insert-songs in episode 9 aren't subtitled, but honestly, I think Ana works better if you DON'T know what they're saying. That way, one can at least pretend that the lyrics make sense.
...And the end of Fuko's arc is still so unbelievably amazing! I recently played through her arc in the game, and I noticed that they changed a few things, but I'd say those changes just served to make an already great story even better. That episode is easily my favourite episode in the first series.

And now After Story too: http://www.mania.com/aodvb/showthread.php?t=94729
Part 1 coming out in October...that's pretty darn soon.

But if something is in English, it doesn't really have to be subtitled right? I feel like it would just sort of take up unnecessary screen space.

Technically Clannad S1 was also done by Sentai, for ADV. It doesn't matter anyway, since they're all the same people, just named differently for tax and debt reasons.
Anyways, Clannad Afterstory isn't out yet. It'll be released in October. It should be fine since, after the typos in Set 1, they tightened up their QC'ing and editing, and they'll continue to use the same process and people for Clannad AS.
Should grab a few friends or people from the community and make our own fandub, of the entire series.
Although it would be technically ILLEGAL, still...that'd be pretty cool.

(That, and the fact that RightStuf ships all my packages to my mother's place, whom I only visit every other weekend.) Anyway, I'm really glad that we're finally getting this, and I can't wait for the second half to be released. *Prays for it to be on the list of December-releases*
