View Full Version : Best way to create vectors?
When i make a vector it always comes with endless flaws, i never seem to be able to make all layers match flawlessly.
I use to work on photoshop, should i use other tool for making vectors?

Can you provide an example? Much easier to give feedback that way.
You could also try Illustrator instead of Photoshop. Though, I have never tried that program myself. :meh:
EDIT:
Funny, looking at your avatar made me remember someone (another member) from a while back.

I vector with the pen tool in CS2, adjusting my brush setting and my brushes while I use the pen tool to stroke the necessary lines I need. Other than that, I don't really have any other technique.
I haven't used Illustrators like Daniel.E has mentioned. (I have it but have never used it)
Mostly my vector never look pro enough and the flaws make me get tired of it sooner or later :p

Oh, I just remembered where I had seen that vector in your avatar. :)

You posted the completed one in the Claymore image thread, right?

I still think it would be interesting to see the piece in question.... If only to make things a bit easier to understand. ;)
Thats a really well made vector. I don't get what you meant by flaws and not looking pro enough, because you pretty much did everything you can to the sketch; the shading, details and colors are well done. If you want to challenege yourself though (it probably won't be so hard for you), maybe trace the outlines too. Using the 'stroke' option with the pen tool can be o.k. in some cases, but tracing the outline IMO looks better. It might take some time, but I believe its worth it.
I think im doing vectors the wrong way:
1 - I create a layer with all drawing lines (i make a tracing with a 3rd party program).
2 - I import that layer into photoshop.
3 - I start creating layers for each colored area below that layer (e.g.: skin base, skin shadows, skin shine...).
4 - After sometime: Unmatched areas everywhere, distorted lines, garbage everywhere, you may not notice in the resized version but the full resolution image is garbage only. :D
Maybe i dont know how to make vectors and i have no clue about making shading out of nothing.
Here's one piece i made (i quite dropped it a lot of times before reaching that unpleasant version):

I am sorry to say, but not many people around here are going to trash an awesome piece like that. ;)
Regardless, I am gonna play along wth you a bit more and give you a final tip. If you want to raise you bar even more, watch the work of other people and try to learn something from them.
Oh and before I forget........
Tracer and vectorers (for the most part) do not vandalise images out of ill will. This is something some folks do for the pure and simple fun of it. ;)
Nah i think i lack talent both for drawing (nearly 0) both for shading...to reach something decent it takes way too much time for me...
Btw i still use Adobe Photoshop 7.0 (duh?)...will i gain anything if i change to a newer version?

I am not an expert :meh: but I use Illustrator. It's great, really. Better than PS when it comes to do vectors IMO.
There is only one problem, you need a graphic tablet if you want to use the pressure in Illustrator.
Illustrator uh? I'm poor :D

You can still try it I guess. There is a Trial version, no?
Illustrator is great. You really should try it :hyper-^v^:
Yah, i might "try" it ;)
Hope you will give us/me some feedbacks about it then :O
And BTW, the vector you posted in this thread is really nice :thumb:
The image i posted in thread is not a vector, its a wallpaper, the original vector is this one:

All the shading of the picture was made without any reference so its not perfect <.<
The vector was made directly over the pencil drawing...

Is it you who made this vector? This is beautiful :)
edit: You edited your post :meh: Good job, really ;)
Yeah the vector was made by me, yet i didn't make the original pencil drawing...

Use Illustrator. Best advice I can give you.
The paths are always there so you can fix/adjust lines and shapes whenever you like.
Plus, everything made in Illustrator can be resized as much as you want so you could make ******* x ******* sized wallpapers if you wanted too.
Im not used to illustrator but i have other vector programs i can use...
Why did you edit your message :p I was about to reply to it.
Me, when I create a vector, I trace the outline. I put all the layers in a group named "outline".
Then about the colors, i create a group named "shapes" under the first group and I zoom on the outline, so for the contour of each "path" I just put the anchor points under the outline.
I am not an expert though, here a wallpaper I made ^^

I tried illustrator 10 demo version, and i have to say its the worst editing program i've ever used, it cannot even load the files it saves, already thrown it to garbage lol
I think i will stick with Inkscape which is 1 trillion times better, 1 trillion times easier to use and produces 1 trillion times better vectors for free.

Illustrator, definitely. It's really intuitive and very much like Photoshop (almost simillar interfaces, etc), so you can only improve.
I have also used Freehand before, and it's not too bad either, but the software on itself is dated. I would recommend Illustrator, then Photoshop for the final adjustments.

You're not using it the right way, believe me. I have to create vectors for a living (lol, kinda, I'm a graphic design student which means I do a lot of vectorial stuff), and it never disappointed me.
This vector was entirely dependent on the drawing itself. IMO, if you were to be a lil' bit more accurate of what you think your flaws were, it would be easier for us to be of assistance. Right now, we are completely confuzzled of your approach. Would you care to explain what 'layers matching flawlessly' mean? And what does it look like?
