View Full Version : Kannagi - Q & A
This thread is for those of you with questions about the Kannagi anime or manga. There are many questions that don't need a whole thread to discuss them. A simple practical answer straight from the anime or manga without any speculation can solve these connundrums. If someone has such a question about Kannagi which can be solved by answering with facts from an official source, then please ask that question here.
Please don't post in this thread unless you are asking a question or answering one. Please remember that it only takes 1 person to answer a question. And don't speculate! You can only reply with cold, hard, merciliessly unforgivable facts. If you have to speculate, then please just tell the querrant that no answer is known, but here are some facts that might help him make up his own mind.

Why is there a plaster on Jin's nose at the start of the series?

Hi
so is this a 12-13 episode series? I believe wikipedia mentioned that 4 DVD is planned with 2-3 episodes per.
I assume that the manga is nowhere near ending as well? I seen some translations, but cannot tell how far behind it currently is.
The manga is up to chapter 33, no idea how much longer it's planned to be.

So... I hear that this Jin guy can fight pretty well. Is this true?
Since yesterday on 4chan there was so much stuff about nagi being a slut and stuff. Can anyone fill in the blanks for me on that?
All i know is she had an ex-bf and lost her virginity?
like is that from the manga?
@ frubam
He is above average, but he is not really outstanding
Zange is easily the strongest when it comes to fighting.
@ Dream
It's from chapter 36 (the latest manga chapter). Lost virginity is not true so far to my knowledge. She does have an ex and Zange revives him by collecting impurity (which's said to be remaining of his body). Nagi seems loving him very much, but I don't think it says what happens between them.
It's most likely happens that Jin has imagined how he is "bleeping" Nagi, and doing "bleeping" and "bleeping" to her in previous chapters, but now Nagi is all for her ex.
I'm not sure how ppl get to this point though, I'm thoroughly a Zange fan afterall. I really think the most critical question is that Nagi is cursed and asking to be killed.

I think the moral of the story is that a fair number of 4chan'ers are hypocritical self-righteous twits who should be smacked for their temerity in questioning how a kami spent her eons. Sometimes its hard to believe I'm in the same species as that lot.

Just so you know 2ch is saying the same thing.
Just so you know 2ch is saying the same thing.
And the same comment for those posters as well.... my attitude towards certain native otaku dive when they get stuffed and so righteous over "purity" when they're such a garbage bag of impure thoughts themselves (immature hypocrisy, they want to do the girl but then they think badly of her :eyebrow: ). They pull this same bullshit on real life voice actresses....

I very much agree with Vexx...
A similar outburst also happened with Minna of Strike Witches. Just because it was revealed that she had a boyfriend and could have done "X, Y and Z", her popularity since that episode dropped all the way to hell.
""Purity" bullshit" is right...and I couldn't have described it any more to the point

Vexx, one of reason of such strong reaction I believe is taht it IS shounen. Meaning that not-grown ups tend to read it and you cannot ask from 12 year old to be really acting mature and so.
Of course we also know that a lot of otakus are not that young yet keep the childish act, but i believe if Kannagi were seinen of josei the reaction would have been more subdued. it is just taht in shounen case more of immature public gathers and thats why such threads begin...
In one way or another, unless the issue gets solved soon, the author will be hurt financially. As the popularity of Nagi and the whole manga will go down the hill.
Don't really care if they're 12 or 20 or whatever.... that's one way youngsters learn - when someone calls their ass on the carpet for such nonsense. Its not only childish, its unmanly :)
Besides... we're talking about a Shinto goddess who's effectively been around for hundreds of years. That almost moves their ranting from poor manners to delusionary :) especially when she flat out says there was someone she liked early in the story.
Meh.... this is one of the reasons I tell Americans to think really hard before calling themselves "otaku".
Hi, everyone. Take this discussion somewhere else you want to continue. Here is a place to ask and answer questions, not to discuss such indepth social phenomenon.
Does this series eventually turn into a harem?
If you mean manga, it doesn't.
Zange doesn't have any feeling to Jin in the 1st place. Nagi loves someone else.
herbert, so, actually, Nagi doesn't has any interest in Jin too ?

while Hakua is the one that is harnessing feelings for Jin. And i'd say it's not leaning into a harem one bit. Also, it doesn't qualify to be one, imo.

She does, but she seems just loving another guy a lot more, especially when she is in Nagi goddess state.

This is not a place for discussion, so I'll answer you in Zange/Hakua thread (http://forums.animesuki.com/showpost.php?p=2061270&postcount=17).
herbert, thanks for the info.
Is the physical manifestation of Zange her actual form, or is it Hakua's? When Nagi was explaining about how her sister came about, the form Zange was in the form she has now. But it seems she has the same hair color of her father and some of the students call her Hakua as well. Its confusing

What Japanese lengeds are included in Kannagi?

Is it just me, or are at least two of the episodes of the Ayako version repeated?
What Japanese lengeds are included in Kannagi?
I don't think there are any *specific* legends... but much of the storyline uses Shinto motifs and such.
Cloning the trees is a very "japanese" solution to the river crossing problem.
Cutting down the tree is a horrible thing --- Nagi's tree was probably forgotten in the records long before Jin existed.
The connection of kami to the land is inherent... this idea of people/worshippers being important to their influence and power is kind of a modern interpretation. The traditional idea is that ignoring or disrespecting kami precedes bad things happening (disease, poor harvest, bad economy).
Impurities are fundamental to many ideas and customs in Shinto.
There are a number of excellent books on Shinto these days as studiers realize the need to write *something* down about it. Just search on Amazon for "shinto"
Samatarou

One thing I'm confused about is whether Nagi is the spirit of the tree, which happens to act as a guardian deity of the land, or whether she is the goddess of the land itself, which happened to use the tree as its home or vessel. The latter seems to be how it is being portrayed, but the former is how I understand the animistic idea of kami: that they are the spirits of the specific things in question.
Kami can take residence in "vessels" or "things" which are made sacred by being focal points of contact ... so your latter guess comes closer to the truth.
I went back and watched the opener to episode one.... her tree did indeed have a sacred rope (shimenawa) so we can't say the shrine priests weren't aware of its status. I'm kind of at a loss to explain how they'd even consider cutting it down unless they performed some ritual that they *thought* would transfer the kami to some other place (though I can't find any reference to such a thing).
At the moment, only "baka" comes to mind on why approval was given to cut it down - I may write a Shinto priest I know and see if he can enlighten.
Vexx, here is some manga info.
The local religion is long forgotten, there is no priest seving Nagi for a quite while. Therefore, I guess there is no a proper ritual before they cut the tree.
But I incline to the spirit of tree speculation. Because Zange doesn't care if her tree sacred or not, the worship towards to her seems making no difference from the worship towards her tree.

Sounds like she is retreating after such bad response to her latest chapter. Poor thing.
There's also the possibility this is calculated stageplay to hype the buzz and get those who want more Kannagi to embarrass the hooligans into better behavior. Staged "sickness" is part of the drama (as many voice actresses and other idols learn under good marketing management).
I'm not implying she's lying but that her managers are definitely using this to give her a break and maximize buzz .... but well-choreographed press drama has a proven record in increasing desire for a product :)

If I recall correctly, there was a person who burned his whole collection of School Rumble because of the ending...

Actually I can understand that, because getting an ending you loathe could negate the whole story and make you wish you'd never read it. But for people to go crazy about character quirks along the way is a bit over the top.
There's a wonderful response that makes you look "not stupid and not infantile" --- *sell* your stuff if you don't like it.
But this is a Q&A thread, not a discussion thread --- this stuff has been discussed already in several other threads in this subforum.
Can we get back to Q&A, please? :)

Few Questions
1) How far will the anime probably go into the manga when it ends at ep 13?
2) Has the anime follow the strictly manga ?
3) Has the author continue on working kannagi again?
there was something I was very curious about. I'm getting the impression that Jin and Tsugumi are in different classrooms--maybe in different grades as well. If so, who is the older one?...

1) Roughly covers Vol 1 and 2 with some materials from Vol 3.
2) Yes, so far it is quite faithful even the serious moments
3) She is recovering in hospital, will resume work when she get well. Until then.

Last scene of the anime before the credits is the last scene of Volume 3 of the manga.

There isn't any second season announced.
Yep, but at the same time as soon as the current manga arc wraps up I'm sure an announcement will be around the corner. The amount of anime titles able to sell 10,000 copies of a volume in it's first week of release is low and Kannagi has done it for both volumes it's released so far.

But yes, the possibility of S2 is very high considering the popularity. :D

Anyone know anything about the OVA? CDJapan says the 7th DVD contains the 13th episode and an "unaired episode".
Question!
Where can I get the song that Takako sings in episode 10?

FYI it is track 6 on the CD that came with the 5th limited edition DVD.
I remember reading an article on MAL where there was suppose to be an unaired episode of Kannagi with the dvds... but considering I didn't see it anywhere else I thought it was a mistake... but you say cdjapan lists it.. hmmm.. can anyone shed some light on this? Really looking forward to it if it's true.
The release date for the 7th DVD is 27th May 2009 so maybe we will find out more closer to the time. This is what cdJapn have for the release.

Description
Seventh DVD release from anime series "Crazy Shine Maidens (Kannagi)" featuring episode 13 and unaired episode. Limited edition includes bonus CD with soundtrack and cast talk plus pin-up card.

Doesn't look like we'll see Jin and Nagi hook up, which is a bummer...
It's just a bonus episode... I think one centered around the entire cast is best for that sort of thing since they are usually the most fun episodes. And there's always season 2 for what you want....

Too bad they still do not have enough material to run a season 2. Unless, they make that season stylized in the same format Bleach is running in. 1 episode per 1 chapter, which would be really difficult to do.
There is more manga chapters unanimated than there is animated... If the current manga arc had been finished before the mangaka fell ill I'm sure a second series would've been hinted at if not announced by now.
