Basically an introduction of Misae's story. I noticed quite a few changes to the visual novel already, which was a bit disappointing, but nothing too major.
Still, I'm really looking forward to the next episode! Hopefully we'll hear Shima say his famous quote.
I missed the broadcast time :( Aw well, I'll just wait for the RAW I guess. In any case this arc should answer some questions that have been bugging people for a long time, so look forward to it :)

Misae reminds me of Kyou ala Kaname Chidori of FMP... Maybe because of her seiyuu..

I loved this route, and I loved the main character hijack.
Let's hope this is as good as the game.

*sigh* I don't have much time, for this episode, so no bullet summary.
That said, here are the screencaps for this week, will add further points in due time as usual
Episode 5: summary, comments, screencaps (http://animehistory.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/clannad-after-story-episode-5/)
EDIT: everything has been reworked
One thing: I really like how they animate the cat, and this episode is no exception.
Wow, props to KyoAni. They managed to transform something I didn't think much of in the game to something actually enjoyable and in a high grade. I thought before that I should lower my expectations till we got to After Story proper given my previous experiences with the game for the future arcs, but if they are going to be this good then I'm bought :p

Well, if you didn't like Misae's route and enjoyed this, then I suppose someone like me who enjoyed that route will really like this.
Can't wait...

This route was shorter in the game, too, being composed mostly of the flashback.
Yeah, we'll be done by next week.

Satsuki Yukino does a good angry woman and is one of the few seiyuu capable of making me laugh as a direct result of her actions. If they play this well I may get my first unforced chuckle out of Clannad in a long long time. That's more then I could say for anything Sunohara was capable of doing. Although I hope the extent of what Yukino is able to do with Misae as far as being an angry woman isn't just limited to beating up on everybody's favourite character, which totally hasn't been done to death by now. I still don't see how that aspect of the show is supposed to make me laugh or even not groan, but whatever....new arc=fresh slate as far as I'm concerned.
Though sometimes I honestly do wonder if Kyoto Animation secretely hates the male sex just like Yoshiyuki Tomino secretely hates the female sex. Whenever you actually have a male character in one of their shows (which is rare in and of itself) they tend to get portrayed in the worst light possible, either being something of a moron (Sunohara, Kona-pops, Tanaguchi) or a lame jerk (Kyon, Tomoya's Father, Yuuichi at times) and they always seem to be on the losing end of some dispute with or at the mercy of the female characters for whatever reason. By contrast their female characters are often portrayed as smart (Kotomi, Miyuki, Yuki) strong-willed (Nagisa, Tomoyo, Mai, Haruhi), witty (Konata, Kagami) and cute (all of them) and always seem to end up winning any conflicts or situations in the end even when they are clearly in the wrong or at the very least not absolutely in the right. Be it through a superior character trait or by guilt tripping their "opponent" by playing up a moe weakness, their female characters seem to dominate the male characters on almost every level.
It almost seems a little sexist even if it's probably not done deliberately or for any other reason then marketing the characters to the expected audience.

Wow that was really well done! I highly enjoyed that just as much as I did in the game. The animation has imporoved alot since ep 2. Really well done can not wait for next we4ek with my kleenex box buddy XD Shima is too cute ^-^ I just want to hug him. Did they use Romi Paku for his voice? Sounds like it...

Shima didn't have a real "face" in the game right? I'm waiting for the sub, but I was sort of assuming they'd do it like the game: Shima in first person and we don't actually see what he looks like.

Sorry to inform you but that didn't happen...They showed Shima clearly for the viewers though his design is not so bad. Actually because of the quality of this episode, I liked it.:D

The only did that because Tomoya's face wasn't shown either, except in CGs.
Since Shima had taken over the narration, it made sense.
Well, there is absolutely nothing negative I can say about this episode. The illusionary world was very much needed at this point, so it fit well. The OP was fantastic as normal. The pre-Shima stuff was changed a little but to fit it into the story as we've developed it, but KyoAni did it perfectly. It wasn't anything stupid or over the top. Just have Nagisa there, and everything is perfect. ^_^
Misae's story seemed a little faster paced than I remember it, but then on the other hand, they really ended at the same point as I was expecting. Based off the music in the preview, that story'll probably be done next episode.
I guess if I have to complain about ANYTHING, it'd be that there was no link between last episode and this one. They could've had Nagisa and Tomoya have a 10 second "How about we check to see how Sunohara is doing since Mei left", and it would've worked perfectly to link.
Still give it a 10.

Oh wow, Misae-san in her summer uniform.
And finally, Shima-kun gets a face! Kyo-Ani did a great job in illustrating everything that is cute about this adorable boy.
And while I've already heard her do Shima-kun once in the game, Paku Romi must be applauded once again for her effort in bringing Shima-kun to life, considering Shima-kun is a big departure from the type of boys that she normally does. (Edward Elric, Hitsugaya Soujirou, etc)
I guess if I have to complain about ANYTHING, it'd be that there was no link between last episode and this one. They could've had Nagisa and Tomoya have a 10 second "How about we check to see how Sunohara is doing since Mei left", and it would've worked perfectly to link.
Wasn't the reason they went over to the dorm to bring over some food for Sunohara from Sanae because Mei had left? I really enjoyed this episode and can't wait to see how it ends next week.

Wasn't that what Nagisa told Misae though? That they were paying Sunohara a visit and bringing him some refreshment because Nagisa's mother felt he was feeling alone without Mei chan, or something on those lines?

Is that boy really a boy? I almost get the feeling that it is a she.
Anyhow the episode was too dramatic for a simple little crush story. I gave it a 7. This arc does not seem very exciting.

Me too. I couldn't figure out what it actually was before they got around to actually using it.
Also, that kid whose name I have already forgotten to me seems like an opposite version of Makoto from Kanon... Just because his story started while Tomoya was looking at the cat. I might just be reading too much into it, though.

i can feel the waterworks coming next ep. Misae has the character design of Mai from kanon, the personality of Kyou and the moral code of Tomoyo. what an amazing mix of characters. it seems like next ep will be a tearjerker.
i absolutely loved the second half of this episode, but the first half had too much Nagisa for my liking. 9/10

I'm just about to watch it, downloading SS-Eclipse subs right now. Honestly the game left me quite confused on what really happens to Shima so I hope the conclusion in the anime will give a clearer picture to that. Ok not exactly in as to WHAT happened, but more like how it happened anyway.
Also, did you guys who also played the game thought the anime illustrated Shima exactly or mostly as you thought he'd look like?:D

Got around to catching up with Clannad AS...
So far, it's been good, but not much more. It's certainly more drama-intensive than the first season, but its greatest shortcoming is apparent in that it has to rely on the very underveloped and one-dimensional female leads from the first season; though luckily, its main focus has been on the much better-handled male leads.
Sunohara's arc was a delightful mix of comedy and drama though riddled with intrusive appearances of unrelated characters during what could have been much better scenes. Anyway, onto this episode...
Now focusing on a cast of new (or newish) characters, this will hopefully be another impressive arc in what started slowly and has built up. While it also started off with a few too many plot holes for my taste, I remember Kanon's Makoto arc having done the same; so while my hopes for this arc aren't unfounded, KyoAni's track record with adapting Clannad has been less than impressive as far as story arc focus has gone, so I'm still a bit nervous.
Episode rating: Good.

I'd almost, almost make the argument that this has been the first episode of Clannad After Story that has actually felt like an episode of Clannad. All the other episodes have kinda felt like they've either taken from or wouldn't be out of place in different anime, such as the random baseball opener (Haruhi) to the most recent, highly angsty end to the Sunohara arc (any number of melodramatic shounen romances). But this ep had Clannad's more traditional approach to character-driven (slightly poignant) dramatic storytelling as well as a dash of an ARIA-esque random transport to another time/place to tell its story. And, as far as I'm concerned, almost everything that's ARIA-esque is good.
I think it's fairly clear where this is going. I'm not perturbed by what appears to be a fairly ho-hum "high school crush" story, because I'm almost certain that's eventually going to be little more than a plot device, and the real crux of this story will be about the bond between Misae and Shima. I like where this is going. It has the makings of a simple, yet heartful story about people.

Just finished the episode. I think I finally realized why it was suggested that Misae's route be played first. Though I wasn't too sure if the mechanic that led to the flashback was the same as the game, it was pretty good for starting one of the best reminiscing stories I've seen on both VN and anime mediums.
That said, people should PAY CLOSE ATTENTION to what Shima will be talking about, especially in this episode about the lights. You're gonna need to remember that as the story progresses.
And to answer the question I posted in this same page, yes Shima looks almost exactly as I thought he would. It's uncanny.
^
damn i wished i play the game in some orderly fashion.
anyways
The see-saw gun alone makes this ep awsome.
i can't wait till i see how this story unfolds

This is probably one of the first AS episodes I didn't give it a 10 or a 9. For some reason it didn't impact me as much as the other episodes did. Of course seeing Misae-san during the high school years and hearing her story was interesting. But I didn't get much of a huge feel for this episode. Hopefully next week will make me more pulled in.
I like Misae, but here... I don't know really. They tried to show her and events in the past like in the game, and they showed it good... but strange. I can't feel the same feelings like in the game or catch this atmosphere. Really, this is so sad. Especially this strange low-budget version of faces in the preview again (or no, not again, Kyoto, previous episode was brilliant).
Misae really deserves better adaptation. 8 of 10.
i also wasn't very impressed with the ep. it wasn't really hilarious nor was it heartwarming. the thing i like the most with the ep was seeing a young misae, who is definitely hotter than any of the female in this series. and serving eye candies wasn't the reason i liked clannad in the first place...
I dont get the weird lame talk in the beginning since season 1.
Anyway nice ep. Misae should go become a drill instructor for the army she perfectly fits that description xD.
That kid reminds me of Sunohara almost the same hair style and gets beat up alot.

Im about to downlaod the torrent, but there is a "version 2"
whats the difference to the "version 1"?
Gave it a 9. Shima is really interesting, and both he and Misae are likable characters. The whole wish concept is fascinating. Knowing Key though, I bet something bad will happen to Shima, and Tomoya will grant Misae's wish for him. That cat is pretty creepy too.

This arc is really nostalgic, being the first one I played in the VN.
Since it was my first time playing one, and on so long, I wasnt able to really get into it until I got through about..the first two arcs. (At that time, Misae and Tomoyo's) Now I was I got into the hang of it sooner since those two were the ones harder for me to get through xD
I still dont care for Tomoyo's story much but I really did enjoy Misae's, so it's nice to see it here.
And another thing, Shima looks so adorable <3
In the game, I imagined him as a young, slightly feminine boy, with brown hair and just plain brown hair. Nothing extensive or striking about him but having a bit of warmth. In their adaption, the childish/girlish facial structure is still there, but instead he has such nice color eyes (Hehe) and his hair is reminiscent of another characters who has yet to pop up...
But either way, he's adorable.
Gah! Cliffhanger endings! ><
Whoever mentioned that this was the first ~After Story~ episode that felt like an actual Clannad episode, i totally agree with you right there.
Still not too sure whether this whole Misae thing is just a simple flashback or not though, but the talking cat and Okazaki nodding off has me thinking otherwise. I found it kinda remniscent of the mysticism in Kanon and to a lesser extent AIR, which isn't too surprising i guess, given they're all by Key/Visual Arts.

This episode was competently done and I think that's all that needs to be said, really. I did think that Misae going about with her suplexes and piledrives against Shima, and yet, him still coming back to talk to her is supposed to display his persistence and I sort of wish they had displayed it in a different manner because coming back after the other person goes as far to inflict physical pain is a bit hard for me to believe. That's the way it goes though I suppose and if they can make the bond between people strong and heartfelt, I'll be fine with it in the end.
And I'm going to have to agree with whoever brought up the subject that this bit of supernatural feels like a piece of Kanon or Air has reentered the picture, which is more an observation than a plus or minus against this series.

Well, an improvement from the last episode, but not a whole bunch better. The drama still feels forced and over exaggerated in her flashback. Like, usually CLANNAD doesn't make me roll my eyes, but this season so far has me doing too much of it.

During the flashback, was Misae already the Student Council President or is she going to run for it in the later episodes?
If you noted, her school coat of arms had a green background which showed that he was a first year student. Normally the student council high positions are open for those who are experienced in the school, yet have the time to do it. That is, 2nd year students like Tomoyo.

Kaname FTW! I mean Misae. I love it when she keeps owning Shima withe her moves.
lol at a far distance shot, I mistook misae for kotmomi. Ok, I admit I look at the chest level first.... Oh hey, isnt that kotomi, then the closer shot... Oops... :)
Hmm, misae has no admirers in the past despite her looks. I guess her suplex techniques have made her quite unapproachable to boys... haha.
good episode. The past of the Misae look interesting.

Sigh... Romi Paku is so Godly.
Weird - what normally keeps Clannad from becoming more than a mild pleasure for me is the ham-handed sentimentality that oozes from it's very pores most of the time. This was as syrupy as you like, and focused on a character I don't especially care about - but it clicked 100% for me, on every level. Maybe it was Goddess Paku, but Shima's character design was a major winner - all in all, a hijacking of the plot that totally won me over for reasons I really can't explain.
Looking forward to the next ep more than at any time I can recall for this series. If nothing else, as an anime-only Clannad viewer I'm interested in seeing how Shima ends up as a cat...
Hmm somehow, its was a bit tough getting into Misae's storyline. I hope to be hooked by next episode...

Episode 5
-After the girl from the illusory world finished building what she was building I was like “What? Did she build a gun?!!!!” :uhoh: It was only after she started using it that I realized it was a seesaw. :heh: I’m so curious about the illusory world; I can’t wait to find out more about it. Is that girl Nagisa? Who is the robot? Was the robot a human in his past life?
-Lol!! :heh: Divine Punishment!! Poor Sunohara!! :D
-I didn’t understand why Misae slapped Sunohara after he said “thank you” for the leftover dishes that Nagisa gave him. :upset: He didn't deserve that slap. :(
-Nanashi really likes Tomoya, doesn’t he? :)
-I loved how as soon as Misae hinted that Sunohara and Tomoya were the biggest obstacles, Nagisa defended Tomoya and said he was now going to school on time. That was so cute!!!http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi00.gif
-Poor Sunohara!! Nagisa should not have said that to Misae!! I really wonder how Sunohara survives all that beatinghttp://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi34-1.gif, he must be a super human or something like that. ;):D
-I found the fact that Sunohara talks about Nagisa and Tomoya’s love life very interesting.
-Loved how Nagisa said that she won’t be snatched away by anyone else! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi01.gifThat was so cute!!! But it also kind of shows that Nagisa doesn’t see herself as the pretty and cute girl she truly is. I know she said that because she loves Tomoya very much, but maybe she also said it because she thinks that there is no way another guy could be interested in her. :upset:
-Nanashi spoke to Tomoya!!! :o Maybe Nanashi is not an ordinary cat!!! Could the girl that Nanashi was referring to be the girl in the illusory world?!!! Or maybe Misae?!!!
-Misae was so cute and pretty when she was in high school. :)
-Shima won me over in just one episode!!! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi9b.gif He is so cute, so pure and such a kindhearted guy!! I like him so much!!!http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi9b.gif
-Poor Misae!!! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi04.gifThe boy she likes already has a girlfriend!!! :( And poor Shima-kun, she likes Misae but she likes another boy!!! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi04.gif
-The last scenes of this episode were so touching!! http://i82.photobucket.com/albums/j276/tina_0205/monkey%20emoticon/khi32.gif
-Here’s a crazy thought …could Nanashi be Shima reincarnated as a cat?!!!
I can’t wait to watch the next episode!!!
/me reads destiny4everlove's post and cries for his lost innocence
- is it just me or was the animation in the "illusionary world" a bit different as usual; the girls movement to be precise. Her movement is like that robot :heh:
- a well done episode i must say. I can't help but think the Misae, Shima and the cat are related in some way while watching the episode. And Tomoya seems to have gotten involved.
- just when i was starting to enjoy the episode more.. it ended :heh:
- i lol'd hard at Nagisa's response "Th-That won't happen! I won't be snatched away by anyone else!" while giggling in my seat. The land lady have a point, Tomoya won't find any girl that would say that, but, if you think about the type of girls surrounding Tomoya, pretty much all of them will have a reply like Nagisa. That moment was picture perfect, Nagisa and Tomoya were so cute :D
^
only the robot and the iw girl uses cgi. Should look more smoother.
maybe her wish is that the whole school not be tardy ;p
maybe... maybe... :heh:

you people really had some funny ideas on what the seesaw was. a gun and a ship to send the robot off? :heh:
i find it interesting how they started showing misae's past when okazaki is falling asleep while staring at the cat. i can't help but think the cat is related to shima and misae. i've never tried playing her route in the game so i wouldn't know.
Great episode. :)
At the first moment, i was realy shocked on this frame ....

In the first seconds, i thought she built a gun ... :heh:
my same thought XD
Anyway I like this arc, young Misae is beautiful and Shima-kun is so cute *_*

For a person like who dislike's Misae's route this one had me enthralled. Gave it a 9/10. I look forward to the end next week. I will baaaaaaaaw.
On a offnote: Shima sure looks like Kappei for a moment there.
a younger misae really does remind me of kyou. though i do have this feeling that the guy may be a cat o.O ie the hair and eyes. the story with the cat vision is a bit farfetched but looks rather interesting.

Episode 5 was another good one (so 8/10), with a good overall pacing, besides Ep 4 the best one so far. Especially the part of Misae's past was interesting, can't wait for the next episode.
Younger Misae is so flippin' moe... She really does remind me of Kyou for some reason.
I'm loving this story so far. It's like a reverse-Makoto (hopefully with a happy ending).

Awesome episode DESPITE it being one big huge cliffhanger. at the end I was like WTFFFFF
