I dropped this series around the first few episodes due to poor quality. Today I stumbled upon a certain battle between two characters.. and let me just say that...

Someone needs to send A1 Pictures a cease and desist order. This will stop them from further butchering any other decent series in the future.

They already proved themselves incapable with Persona.. I don't know who decided it would be a swell idea to give them Valkyria Chronicles.

edit: I mean, I am at a loss of words.. I've never seen such poor design. This is some of the worst budgeting I had seen yet... Not to mention, the sound effects cut off randomly, giving me the assumption the audio was chopped up in 5 minutes.

Still, though, for all the complaining I've heard about this show, I'm not sure much of it has focused on the design, animation, and sound editing. I guess we'll see what people thought in the Overall Impressions thread that will be open soon.

Well, I haven't seen much of this series. The first episode gave me a good impression, but after that, it seemed the animation declined in quality. I made my decision to drop the show after I realized that certain edits were done purely for budgeting.

Now when I came back to watch a certain battle clip, it completely kicked me off the ground. A lot of scenes which have static pictures lasting about 3 or 4 seconds.. sounds cutting.. constant quality shifts in character design.. choppy movement.. and the good ol' inconsistencies with weapon size to character.

Now that I'm not like :twitch:, it caught me off guard.

While working at "The Beerstore", yes it's called that, my place of work.

I got a case of empties in called "O'Hara Red", it was an Irish beer and looked pretty cool. Got me thinking, do you guys think Catherine O'Hara has an Irish accent. my 1st play through I assumed it was English, but now it sounds different.

I'm 50/50 for either Scottish or Irish accent, not English anymore.

While I'm a bit late to the English VA Party, someone should have noted that Faldio and this guy:

http://tf2wiki.net/w/images/8/8c/Meetthemedicplaceholder.PNG

share a Voice Actor. I found this out before playing the game, and I'm half expecting Faldio to utter the line "Danke schoen. Ja, ja... danke schoen..." when no-one's watching, and have Welkin going, "What?" as he walks by. Lots of missed lols there.

I'm going to brainfart, but who was it in-game who's scared of pointed things? I bet, if he mentally breaks the fourth wall and realizes who Faldio's voiced by, he keeps his distance. (Syringe Guns and Bonesaws. Very Pointy.)

Is that '' actual sarcasm? Hard to tell on the internet.

I actually noted it because, in German, words ending with 'e' end with an '-uh' sound, 'Walk' is pronounced as 'Valk', and 'uer/ür' is fairly obvious. The Valkyrur and the 'Walkuere' probably have nothing to do with each other, aside from the name.

I'm actually starting to come to the conclusion that having everyone speak German in Battlefield Gallia wasn't too far off. The "Valkyria/Walkuere", Germanesque names (for instance, Bruhl), and fairly German designs (not many countries aside from Germany used interleaving suspensions, and the mid/late game Edelweiss, Lupus, Imp HT, and TD use the interleaving roadwheels).

Though, the 'Walkuere' note was probably a fan spotting coincidence - perhaps I'll end up adding to the Fanon that Gallia and the Empire both actually speak German - it's simply underwent Translation Convention. The Federation could have German-speaking states, or, if Ramona's wounded lines are any indicator, French also exists.

Neovoid
2010-02-02, 07:31
Also, isn't Gallia supposed to be the Archaic Name for France? If there is place named "Gallia" in Europa, would there be a place in the Federation named "Albion"? BTW, I think "Albion" was the Archaic name for the island of Great Britain. Both "Gallia" and "Albion" have been featured in many fantasy rpg games.

RedShocktrooper
2010-02-02, 16:07
I do believe so - I recall my Grandmother having a short stint of interest in the Galls or something like that - though, if that shape near the bottom-right of the Map of Europa is Europa's Italy, and 'Bermany' and 'Faustria' are north of that, then I assume Gallia to be more geographically located near the Netherlands and Holland, though the Gallian-Imperial front does closely parrallel the 1940-41 Winter War between Finland and the Soviet Union - perhaps it ends up being called the 'Summer War' outside of Gallia, as was the Winter War?

The Gallia of Europa is far too Germanic to be anything like France, so 'Albion' could end up refering to VC's version of Spain, for all we know.

I dont want to look like I am here to start anything..

But I finshed Band of Brothers a few days ago. And alot of stuff I wanted to see in Valkyria Chronicles I just found in Band of Brothers without fail. Makes me feel a little more disappointed with this anime even more. THey should of done a much better job.

I'd still like to try the game tho if I get a ps3 O_O

Now I understand why alot of people didnt like Feldro (spelling?) and Wielkins.. when you have guys like Captain Winters.

RedShocktrooper

Actually, you did just start something. As commanding officers and sergeants, I'd rather have Sgt. Chip Saunders and Lt. Gil Hanley from Combat! than I would Alicia and Welkin. Mainly because Saunders is a competent and experienced (and not to mention, non-hormonal) sergeant. Haneley's also gone through extra years of officer training, and is quite qualified for the rank of Lieutenant.

...Plus, "Saunders" just sounds like a better name for a Sergeant than "Melchiott" does.

well, if they made the game a hard war type thing, like Band of Brothers, the market would be completely different. i would have liked to see a bit more death in the series, but you get what you get. the anime was above average, but the game will always be superior.

and to be fair, BoB has several military advisers where as VC had none >_> i think even StrikeWitches got a military/historical advisor >_<
but like its been said, the game was purposely trying to avoid the cliche "war is hell" and gritti-ness of it especially with the CANVAS engine

But yea, i also bought a ps3 for it and its still the only game i have for it xD

While I cannot confirm StrikeWitches, I do recall seeing that the VC Devs intentionally made VC to steer away from "War is Hell" and really to demonstrate CANVAS on colors other than brown and gray.

Now, a CANVAS-style take on EndWar would be awesome, though. Imagine actually shouting at Herbert in order to get him to attack. XD

Double post, yes, but this is in a completely different direction than the prior post.

My Red Alert/VC crossover idea, which I still have yet to send to EA, has quite simply put, changed because I picked up EndWar as a rental. It's quite awesome, so I'm actually thinking of reworking the Soviet half to play in a manner akin to EndWar (in essence, making it a two-game pack more than one game on two discs [Gallian and Soviet, akin to ye olde Westwood style]). I'm thinking of submitting it as VC1 and 2, going up against a mix of the Soviets from RA1, 2 and 3. The Soviets, also being the less scrupulous of the factions (even compared to the Empire), use the real-time EndWar styled gameplay, give or take certain things. This certainly drives home already present rifts in the Soviet-Gallian stylization (For instance: Soviet vehicles are dingier than VC ones, and have sharper edges, and possibly have different effects applied to them, looking more like a US-produced cartoon than an Anime). They strike me as the faction who you could shout "Launch WMD" to and they'd not only have no problems, but cheer you on!

Triple post. OMG.

Off on the Red Alert: A Path Beyond forums, I came up, completely out of the blue, with some VC-based achievements:

Squad 7, Move Out!
As the Allies, attack the Soviet base with a Medium and Light Tank, plus eight infantry of any type (besides Tanya) and succeed.

Squad 7, Fall back!
As the Soviets, manage to break up Squad 7 by any means.

Lupus Regnum
As a Soviet, use a Mammoth Tank to destroy a Squad 7 attack.

Volkyria Chronicles
Flatten a Squad 7 attack using only Volkov.

That last one is pretty groan-inducing, isn't it?

"Next" only works if you're playing Sniper.

EDIT:

You're a VC fan when you make a Suggestion on the Valve forums to give the Heavy a shield and a hammer and call it the "Armored Heavy" (Armored Tech, VC2).

Granted, the Spamoknight got something similiar, but meh.

[Amendment:] You're an insanely lucky VC fan when the Idea is found to be interesting and would change up how the Heavy played.

Well pardon my bluntness when I say it's about damn time. Good to see the game finally get recognition it deserves, though I doubt being in a Guiness record is going to repair any under-appreciation for it... You know that saying, "There Is Nothing New Under the Sun?"

It applies to VC, too. Far before VC was even on the drawing board, a game called "Hogs of War" had many of VC's gameplay elements.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mhj1Ekqz2S4

That counter in the corner seems to be Hogs' version of AP, with the game's turns ending after an attack (then you move on to the next pig). The "AP" seems to rather be a timer (as far as you can go without running out of time or attacking, instead of until a bar runs out).

The entire time we've been in love with a remake! A damn good remake, but still...

EDIT: It also seems that the unit's health effects it's "AP" in Hogs, while the closest Valkyria gets is a broken ankle. I guess Hans' cousins don't have Ragnaid, eh?

okay i got a question, hopefully you guys will help me, ive started watching the first episodes of the anime last year if i recall, and i remember stopping because i was at the same point in the PS3 game, now i want to restart watching the anime again but i still havent played the game since. So my question is should i wait and focus on finishing the game? or just watch the anime and play whenever i feel like it. Wich one should spoil me Anime or VideoGame?

Snowman24

The anime spoils itself, there are 2 openings to the anime, what happens in 1 opening, the later... speaks for itself.

I'd say stick to the game, start to finish, then watch the anime, it's not as good...

Yes, the game, in my opinion (and the popular opinion) is that the game's story and ending is much better than that of the anime. Snowman also has a good point when he said the second half of the anime blatantly spoils some rather... key elements to the future...

In any case, I'd still recommend playing the game, then the anime. It's better to the see the original storyline as it was meant to be, then later the anime's... adjustments. Whether the latter's changes would be for better or worse, you're the one to decide...

I will agree, announcement of third is a bit soon, even for the time that Valkyria Chronicles 2 has been out in Japan, and especially so since this game has just come out in America...

What else could it be? Is this teaser site from Sega? If not, my suspicions are also going up for possibly a Season 2 of the VC anime, maybe focusing on the Lanseal Academy students and VC2's events. Well, I'm leaning more toward hoping for a game, considering the... "stellar" performance we've seen in portraying the game original game as an anime. Then again, I have no PSP to play VC2 with, so I might have to rely on the anime to at least get some understanding of the plot's events. Still, two more weeks and we'll figure out what all of this is.

I heard a song in the Car on my way from buying Valkyira Chronicles II in the city; it was called "Smile" by 'Uncle Kracker'

Look it up on Youtube, does it strike anyone else as being a Ted+Marina song? A song they sing to eachother. Their profiles in the game *Valkyria Chronicles 1* at Ted trying to make Marina smile/laugh, but never being able to.

At the end of the war, if they both survived, could you see the two of them singing this song to eachother at the end of the war, out of respect, maybe even love and joy. Out of making it out of alive and appreciating eachother??

Well, according to Marina's bio, she went to live in the hills (or at least alone) after the war, and nursed a little fox as well, while Ted formed a troupe. So, unless she and Ted were in the same town for various reasons, I don't think they will meet again (barring an appeal from Welks for the old squad to assemble for one last hurrah against a foe).

Well, that's typical Marina and she's good like that.

In bold: why not? Scorching the Empire with new allies from overseas on the side after the Imps try another invasion would be a good story. :D It could happen if Gallians have enough of the Empire's antics on the country with a 3rd conflict within 20-25 years and swear to move the war to their land, their people, and their blood.

Finnish Continuation War of 1941-45?

Not quite.

I expect the Empire to take a shot of a violent invasion with the political instability left by the end of the Gallian civil war before Cordelia finds new allies from overseas and uses a strongly patriotic tone to galvanize all of Gallia to join the force which will crush the black heart of the Empire.

I'm quite into a mix of Escaflowne and COD: World at War right now, so that's why I have thoughts about what if the conflicts is transferred on Imperial soil climaxing with the capital's downfall and the Emperor's death in the hands of our Gallian protagonists.

Up to now, we have not seen the Emperor or heard of his views on the Gallian war. Very clearly, his 'commoner' son had violated one of the cardinal rules of war: fighting to inflate his ego. I'm of the opinion that the old fellow might cut a deal with Cordelia and switch to cloak-and-dagger methods to undermine Gallia.

So, I found an interesting piece of music from 1941 that put me in mind of someone we should know. The work in question is "Es war ein Edelweiss", composed for none other than the Wehrmacht Heer.

The singer is Welkin, and the person he gives the titular edelweiss to is, of course, Alicia, in case anyone wants it pointed out.

. Sie trägt es treu in Ehren

An ihrem Sonntagskleid.

Sie weiß, daß dieses Sternlein

Ein Männerherz erfreut.

Sie trägt es mir zuliebe,

Und ich bin stolz darauf,

Denn diese zarte Blume

Schloß einst zwei Herzen auf.

Es war ein Edelweiß

lold. almost the same thing happens in the game

I'll see that and raise this Destructoid blog entry (http://www.destructoid.com/promoted-blog-how-sega-killed-valkyria-chronicles-229795.phtml). On a related note, I will reiterate my opinion that the larger war that serves as the backdrop for the misadventures of Welkin and company would've been a fine basis for a third-person 'Battlefield Gallia' or even something akin to EndWar.

There are dozens of game types that the Gallian-Imperial War and the Second Europan conflict could be used for. A game similar to CDV's "Blitzkrieg" series, or Codemaster's "Soldiers" are two very different but interesting RTS that would be examples of what could be done. But what we have in that case is Valkyria Chronicles trying to be something else.

Innovation is what was praised in the Destructoid article, despite Valkyria having many standard qualities. Although many things carried over from early production, the only really innovative thing that Valkyria Chronicles/Gallian Panzers had at the time was its visual style (which should hopefully influence later fantasy and RPG games). Its gameplay seemed very much akin to another tactical RPG known as "Operation Darkness," itself a fantasy Second World War game. Basically it's pick a unit, choose a path for the unit to move, choose to engage and hope you hit and score a one-shot. It was very different from BLiTZ.

The question is how do they innovate in an attempt to revive popularity? The last two games were a step backwards in many respects and the last was kind of a reserving of week old leftovers. The new card battle game is too early to tell, but I'm not ready to jump up and down over it. There is the history they have created of the larger world setting of Valkyria Chronicles. In my opinion, BLiTZ could be applied to a game set in the 18th to mid-19th centuries.
