Not sure if I can post it. The game Valkyria Chronicles, known in Japan as Battlefield Valkyria: Gallian Chronicles is getting an anime adaptation announced recently.

A television anime adaptation of Sega's Valkyria Chronicles (Senjō no Valkyria -Gallian Chronicles-) simulation role-playing game has been green-lit for production. The anime is scheduled for release in next spring. Sega's development unit that was formerly called Overworks (Sakura Wars) created the original game, which is set in the wartorn country of Gallia in a fictional version of 1930s Europe. Aniplex's A-1 Pictures anime studio (Ookiku Furikabutte, Persona -trinity soul-, Birdy the Mighty Decode, Kuroshitsuji, Kannagi) is producing the project. The Sony PlayStation 3 game first shipped in Japan on April 24, and it just shipped in the United States on November 4.

At the very least, Edie has enough popularity to merit a decently sized role...the Edie Company DLC might be a good filler ep too :P

I didn't say it wasn't good, just not really good except for maybe Alicia and a few others. Yes I know there were a lot of big names, but I still wasn't blown away by the acting. I actually prefer the English voice acting over the japanese. For whatever reason the Japanese voice acting just seemed to sound very flat to me. Maybe the voices just seemed to fit awkwardly with the visuals, I don't know. However I don't think the English is leaps and bounds better by any means.

Also I know I'll probably get a lot of heat for this but, honestly I've never really cared too much for Jun Fukuyama(Lelouch). I know, shocking!

I just beat it now, I think an anime is especially fitting for this game. I'd really like more VC goodness since it's quite short, though I kinda wish they would focus on the Federation vs. Empire war instead of retelling the game.

I just heard about this and I am PUMPED.

I bought VC last weekend and played it every night over the last week. Made it to Chapter 10, Part II. Won't be able to play it again until the semester is over and I head home to the PS3 (I refuse to bring it to college; expensive stuff like that has a habit of walking away on its own).

An anime of this would be so awesome. I'm kinda interested in the Japanese VAs because thanks to my friends whenever I'm given an option I always choose the Japanese voices with English subs, but too late did I hear that the English dub is apparently better. Way too late now. No way am I starting over again. I don't know VA names like some anime fans, but I've watched way more than enough anime to be able to pick out some familiar voices amongst the cast as I play. Sound find to me.

Actually, if you beat the game and restart, as I intend to do, can you change the voices or do you have to keep on with the Japanese voices? I mean like beat the game and restart as you can to get the new special recruits and play skirmishes in Hard Mode, etc. Not a totally new game.

I hope some of my favorite characters make it into the anime, at least in part. Freesia York is by far my favorite minor character. I use her all the time as my extra Scout in missions and just equipped her with the Gallian-1R when I received it.

Cannot wait for this anime! The game is absolutely great. I got up last night just to play one last skirmish before I drove back to college today. :heh:

I don't think you can. Once you select the voices for a game, you cannot change them. If you go to Options, the Voice option is not an option. It just shows which voice you've selected and the other one (English or Japanese) doesn't appear at all.

EDIT: Does anyone else notice a similarity between Captain Varrot and Colonel Mannequin from Gundam 00? That's one of the first things I thought when Captain Varrot was introduced in VC.

That's weird, then, because I'm pretty sure I'm locked into the Japanese voices. When I checked options it showed "Japanese" highlighted, but "English" didn't even appear next to it at all. Oh well. I'll have to wait 2 more weeks to check.

i think that they'll maintain the same tracks that we hear in the game

actually, Sakimoto have composed music for other anime like romeo x julliet and tower of druaga, so i don't see any obstacle for using original score from the game except some delirious copyright's problem :heh:

Since they are keeping Sakimoto Hitoshi as the composer, I assume they will be keeping the same seiyuu cast as the game too. Fukuyama Jun (Maximillian) will be voicing the antagonist again along with Ohara Sayaka (Valkyria). For some strange reason, the ones who were protagonists in Code Geass R2 are now antagonists. ( ^_^; )

It'll be interesting to see how thw writers handle this. If I remember correctly Gintama was very comedic. Then again its not like there are not comedic moments in Valkyria Chronicles, but I just hope they still handle to serious/emotional parts well.

I hope the INCREDIBLE music (FFT! Hitoshi Sakimoto!) and the hand-brushed feel of the backgrounds return. I know it is probably an impossible wish, but I hope one or the other comes true.

I have high hopes for the anime.

This is how I feel about Star Ocean 4 with regards to the 360. That's the game that will make me have to buy a 360.

For now, though, I am completely pleased with my PS3, VC, Disgaea 3, and eventually FFXIII. MoH: Airborne also looks the best on the 3, in my opinion.

I thought real-time seemingly water-color paintings was just the coolest thing ever. And the setting immediately caught my attention as well.

Notice that the staff even kept the CANVAS look for the anime adaptation. That's a nice touch. I'm not sure if it's just for that promotional pic though.

I, too wish that they kept the same character designer of the game for the anime. The game designs are sharp, and I was hoping to see that translated on screen. The style of the anime looks softer in contrast. Still, it's not really bad at all.

Anyway, in my opinion this is the JRPG to get for this year even though it's a bit niche as a strategy game. This, and probably Tales of Vesperia (I still prefer Tales of the Abyss more...). Many agree with this, albeit it's a sleeper hit for most. Forget about its other competitors this year—Last Remnant or what have you. This game is a throwback to past RPG gems that exude genuine charm instead of only wowing gamers over. I'm glad it's getting the anime treatment, and I'm also hoping that the anime will do well.

I get the feeling, though, that it will be a very limited selection. Obviously we'll see the leads and primary supporting characters, but with such a large amount of recruitable characters, there can't be a way to get all of them in. After looking at this, the game's story, and the way the new manga is being done, I sure hope they show some of the dark aspects of the story as a little darker than in the game.

For example, in the manga, Rosie doesn't just intimidate Isara when they first meet - she beats her up. Seeing that in the anime would be a nice touch, and would really flesh out Rosie a little more. Also, I dearly hope they don't skimp on ANY violent content; doing that will ruin any war story (except maybe Star Wars).

Also, yeah, I hope that some of the non-main characters get some good screentime. Especially Marina, my absolute favorite character in VC. So dark... so goth... so Metal Gear (Sniper Wolf) style... awesome.

I'll be watching this when it comes out, without a doubt.

No one thought about how the issue that Welkin spends 90% of his time inside the Edelweiss would be dealt with?

That's true that there were a ton of good games this year that could all qualify as top games, there were so many awesome ones that I enjoyed that it's really a very subjective choice this year with so much good stuff, so for me it's one of my favorites because my favorite genre by far are RPGS (traditional and srpg) and I absolutely loved this new advancement of the SRPG battle system (the mix of new and traditional was excellent) for Valkyria so it was my favorite RPG of the year, haven't gotten to play Persona 4 yet, and as I said it's my favorite genre of gaming (and MGS is one of my favorite series so I'd been looking forwards to the game a lot). Oh how I hope they use this game engine again. Anyway, as you said, not something to get into since there are a ton of games that could all qualify as some of the best of the year and that still wouldn't count all of the great games.

Yeah, a full Skies anime would have been great with all of the "character" that that adventure had. Now it makes me sad imagining some of the action and set pieces in Skies with the same quality as the new Tales of the Abyss anime, cause that would be awesome to revisit lol.

As for best games, I have to admit. For me at least, this game is in my Top 3 RPG of the year. First spot is definitely Fallout 3, while Valkyria and Vesperia are second and third.

But VC as best game? Nah.. Many big titles this year actually deserves to be called the 'best'. GTA IV, MGS 4 and Fallout 3 are my overall 3 best though.

No, but she is certainly a lot more easily flustered when people talk about her and Welkin. There's also a scene where she apparently makes Timbits (or something similar, at least).:heh:

Jane, however, is just as "Imps must die" hardcore as ever. She actually gets a funny scene in the manga.

Another nice bit is Faldio being a ladies-man, especially to Alicia, and hopefully we'll get a love triangle between Welkin, Alicia, and Juno.

I hope a bunch of the manga and game stuff transfers into the anime.

Great. I've been home for two nights now and I haven't touched VC at all. I completely forgot that it'd be bowl season when I got home and I'll do nothing but watch football for the next two weeks. True, it is game information.

But I still don't see how it qualifies as a spoiler of any kind. It's common knowledge (based on it being in the manual) about the game and does not divulge anything about plot.

Perhaps it then just assures that those characters won't die in the anime (if the producers want to be smart). And when it comes to anime, how often does anyone really die, anyway? lol Always seems like "dead" characters come back to life miraculously constantly.

I'm willing to bet that most people would find it a lot more revealing that a character dies than that for gameplay they can't die. :heh:

Now that I'm home I have turned the voices over to English and I'm not sure I prefer them. I think maybe I got used to the Japanese voices.

Welkin's fits, Largo's fits... Alicia's... not so much. Sounds much different than I'd expect. Captain Varrot's sounds really weird.

I'll probably switch back over to Japanese because the American voices just don't fit, overall, to me.

But it is nice to understand what they're saying when it's a situation without subs. lol

I was absolutely overjoyed when i head about the anime adaptation of VC, it's by far my favourite game for 2008, and I'm definately looking forward to the series.

My hope is for a 26 episodes format. I'm afraid 12 episodes wouldn't allow for much expansion over the story of the game, while 26 would let the studio give us quite a deeper insight on the Gallian War. I'm pretty sick of short series that leave you wanting more anyway...

I just know that Marina has usurped Catherine's position as my favorite sniper. Marina, for some reason, gets Ult. Accuracy EVERY time I take control of her now. She is just deadly. She's the only character who gets her best class potential every single use.

As for changing what's said, I have watched enough anime that I can pick up on certain words, tone, etc. and I've noticed that a lot of stuff just doesn't fit what's being said in the subtitles. I don't understand Japanese, but my grasp of the language is good enough to, when given some English words as cues, I can figure it out.

I'm thinking of going back to the Japanese VAs. It's nice to be able to completely understand all the little sayings attached to characters' potential activations, but as with what you said, I think it's just missing something.

I like the dub more than the jap VAs, the jap ones seems overly dramatic at some times, in the end both versions are perfectly fine.

But gotta agree on one thing though, the localization script is completely abysmall. The translators took too many liberties on localizing the story. Granted, its for the sake for a good lyph-synch but at some times, if not most, the subs translations just didn't match with the japanese audio. These anomalies won't occur if you're playing with dubs though.

And btw, though I like Marina, but it seems I'm the only Oscar fan here. :/

Ah, okay. That's really nice, then. Using the Imperial SG 4 rifle and Ult. Accuracy is just unfairly powerful. :)

Catherine's accuracy-up potential is activating more routinely, it seems, now, and her Ammo Refill potential is nice. It really helped me in my last mission to have her rip off 6 headshots in a row. Her British accent really seems to fit for some reason. I like it.

I want to know if and how they'll handle some battle things like Aces. Like maybe have an episode about a battle where, maybe, Ty the Immortal is the "enemy" for that episode? Kinda a small deal, but it'd be a nice touch for the game players.

Well, the guys put "most likely" as the answer. I thought it would be a shame not to use them. Just from reading the description on Wiki, it seems that the seiyuu was chosen for the game with their voices in mind. I mean: Max is not that far away from Lelouch for starters.

Well, I'm a bit disappointed with regard to that as well but the manga version apparently has extra drama subplots thrown in between the different recruitables. So maybe that's a model the anime version is also planning to follow.

I don't think we should judge after seeing just one image shot. Since it is animation, I would expect their looks to have differences in between episodes, however slight it may be.

I dunno, I sorta hope they don't go overboard with side-quests or the "minor" soldiers of Squad 7, mainly because I don't wanna see too much tangential filler. I think 13 episodes should be enough to cover the main arc as well as develop the main players in the story (Welkin-Alicia-Faldio, Rosie-Isara, Largo-Varrot, and Max's generals). There's already plenty of good stuff there, but stretching it out to 26 or more episodes would be sorta diluting it, IMO.

Truth be told so far I'm not liking the anime designs, and yes that also includes Alicia. Her designs looks much more friendlier looking in-game and match her friendly character. Here she look like a sadist and ready to blow up stuff like Jane Turner in game lol.

I agree, if translated well enough it would make an excellent addition to the overall show. Each minor character has their own issues and beliefs(some which may put them at odds with other squad mates)and gives off the feeling of a real squad.

Yes, she's a minor character but she already has a love interest that's known.

I understand that the anime can't be 100% like the game, but I really just don't like them creating a third wheel in Faldio. Why? His character is fine as it is. Just leave him be. He's already got a very important role in the story line.

But I do agree with your assessment of the way the Japanese screenwriters treat complicated love polygons.

From the game's (very) brife flashback, we know that Maximilian was not exactly a favourite son of the Emperor, Selvaria was an experimental subject in a lab and Jaeger, a general from a defeated Nation assimilated into the Empire.

But what was not explored was the reason driving them to do what they did in the game. I do hope this is part of what the "Empire's Story" the animation had in store for us.

That was one of the few things that irked me in the game. Not enough backstory on the side of Selveria and company. You never really got a good idea of what their intentions were. As you said it'd be nice to get some more development on that subject.

It's kinda too bad that we haven't gotten our hands on the Selvaria missions DLC here in NA. It's supposedly out in Japan, but I'm not sure whether or not it has any backstory for her.

At the very least, it shows her taking Ghirlandaio Fortress from General Damon (that sonofabitch).

Speaking of which... I'm left to wonder how much of a bastard they're gonna make General Damon in this. He was already a jackass in the game, but I think they'll probably make him far more of a jerk. It's the one thing he ever excels at.

Also, what if it was just read wrong about how Faldio "falls in love" with Alicia? Maybe he gets into a flirtatious relationship with her at most, or she learns that he's been hitting on all the Squad 7 ladies and dumps him. It could happen.

I frankly don't see what's the big issue with Faldio's change. I always felt that there was some sort of missing dynamic between the 3 of Welkin, Faldio and Alicia being that the trio are the central figures as far as the strictly story-based developments go. Perhaps it's unnecessary indeed, but it could add some extra bits of drama.

Besides, I'm all for Juno getting some chances, even if her defeat is sure.

I don't mean so much the animation team working with Raita, but rather Watanabe keeping some aspects of Raita's design style (( the extremely slender bodies, etc )) or getting some other character designer whose own style falls closer like Horiuchi, Aisaka... or others.

Since you mentioned that, I believe Watanabe is trying to fine tune the characters to be much more believable. But we'll never know until we see line arts of how Selveria looks in the anime.

Creating the doujin based on the original works are basically illegal act. So the official staff don't create the doujin they took part in. If he does that without the permission from Sega, he will lose his social credit like the previous Haruhi manga version's author.

The game is easily the best game I've played in a long while. Definitely the best JRPG-type game for any of the next-gen systems. IMHO, it is worth to buy the PS3 just for this game.

I wish that the anime would fix some of the Marmota-sized plot holes in the story but I am not very hopeful. :) As long as Faldio is written properly, that's OK with me. :)

Definitely. Sega, we definitely need a sequel. And not for Sonic Unleashed. (Although I wouldn't complain as much if Shenmue or Jet Set Radio Future did.)

Hopefully, the anime will increase VC's popularity, the game will sell more units, and a Valkyria Chronicles sequel is annonuced. Really looking forward to the anime since I just finished the game. Can't wait.
