The Spin-off of Haruhi Suzumiya

This thread is dedicated to the discussion of animated spin-offs, The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan and Nyoro~n Churuya-san, that will subsequently be aired on the KadokawaAnime Youtube Channel (http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=KADOKAWAanime&view=videos) as a series of webshorts.

The Melancholy of Suzumiya Haruhi-chan by mangaka Puyo, and Nyoro~n Churuya-san created by Eretto (Utsura Uraraka) both started out originally as popular four-panel-parody-gag-manga with the animated webshorts only officially announced in the October issue of Monthly Shounen Ace that went on sale from August 26. Keeping up with previous 'viral merketing' traditions, the http://haruhi.tv/ website was taken down on the notable date of December 18 and was replaced with a 404 error message depicting images of Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san as is seen below:

There are currently no release dates as of yet.

EDIT: It is officially confirmed that the Haruhi-chan and Churuya-san shorts will debut on February 13th.

If the announcement is true then either AIC Spirits or asread will produce this spin-off. A release in 2009 is still possible since the YouTube episodes will be short.

He is talking about long gaps left between seasons of series and interest in the show. 2ch quickly turned this into a meme, "NICE BOAT", and the original company that made School Days took advantage of this and eventually created "Nice Boat" merchandise.

(Amusingly, the real last episode did indeed contain a boat.)

The CG in Churuya-san was definately interesting, they managed to make the inking look hand drawn with those thick and thin lines. Suzumiya Haruhi-chan's CG was average, Kirarin Revolution quality, which is very bad for KyoAni quality.

I'm also surprised at the animation quality of Haruhi-chan...lots of computer graphics and rather smooth.

The voice acting was very amusing in both. But Haruhi-chan herself, while having few lines, comes across as Konata doing Haruhi...which of course fits perfectly.

Churuya-san was slightly less animated, but that goes with the style I think. I do wonder how much they'll be able to get out of that one...though there are at least two volumes of 4komas, plus a lot of parody works.

For me it is not really the technical aspect. It's how the animated versions keep or lose from their printed versions. IMO, Churuya-san just suffered the most. Then again, it is a gimmick 4koma as in Churuya grab someone's attention, that someone turns to her, she said something, the guy or the girl bluntly answer, nyoro~n. Of course, there are variations on the situation but it is one gimmick that worked so well it got lots of parodies (even House).

In very many anime/manga/video games you tend to see the supervillain having four powerful followers, and generally each one is harder for the heroes to defeat than the previous one (except in subversions). Thus, Ryoko is invoking this trope, and saying that her defeat is only the beginning of things.

I thought so. The Haruhi-chan Haruhi's voice reminded me of her "Psychic attack moves" lines in ZKC.

But I had people telling me her Minato (AkaSaka) and Yuki (White Album) sounded like Konata (Lucky Star), so now I refrained from making any comparison directly. :upset:

I think they all sound like Aya Hirano, myself. But that's just me.

Hmm, i always thought that Konata sounded like Haruhi at some points. Hirano usually adds the same squeak level to her roles --- i've heard it quite a lot. Not surprised some people think the opposite.

I think it was funny that the whole "Truck vs. Kyon" bit was kept entirely offscreen, leaving it to the audience to imagine what it would look like.

The last bit, where it says that Haruhi's punch line was stolen, is because Haruhi was trying to take the boke ("fool") role to play against Kyon's tsukkomi ("straight man") role, and Yuki upstaged it by doing something even MORE silly by not only ringing the quiz buzzer, but adding in the siren effects too.

Also, given that Kadokawa is taking down the oldest episodes, I am thinking that they plan to release them on a DVD once they have a couple months' worth (at the current rate of two episodes per week). Thus, we get to see the episodes for free on Youtube when they are first released, but not forever.
