This is the first time I've seen ANN list three BL titles on the front page alone. :heh:

Ai No Kusabi
Site: http://ainokusabi.jp/
Summary : For the new project, AIC director Katsuhito Akiyama (Pumpkin Scissors, Guyver: The Bioboosted Armor) and character designer Naoyuki Onda (Mobile Suit Zeta Gundam, Blassreiter) are reprising the same roles they performed in the 1992-1994 effort. Yoshihara herself is supervising and writing the scripts. Nobuyuki Abe (Haru wo Daiteita) of On-Lead is directing the sound.

The story is set in the future on the planet named Amoi which is controlled by a supercomputer named Jupiter. Among the mostly male human population, the light-haired elite class is allowed to temporarily keep the dark-haired "mongrels" as pets. One elite member, Iason, encounters a mongrel named Riki in the slums and decides to take him in. However, Iason keeps Riki longer than it is socially approved, and rumors abound about their possible relationship.
Possibly riding on the success of hit TV series Junjou Romantica?

Uh, I was just thinking that a thread about this epic bl should be opened, then I found it here, pushed into the dark abbeys.

I'm so looking forward to this, I loved the old version so much. (which every bl fangirl should check out, if she hasn't already!!!) And it's a 13 ep ova, plenty of time to fit in all the novel details they left out in the old ova (or just briefly mentioned) Even more, the author herself is assisting the team in the script, kudos! Hope they can deliver something that can surpass the original ^^

Also my inner fangirl is hoping for a more "graphic" version this time around :P

Sounds good! :)

Not really. Junjou Romantica isn't the only BL anime.

Oh my, this NEEDED a thread. In my humble opinion Ai no Kusabi has the most powerful story in a BL I have ever seen. It's definitely my favorite and a gem among all the yaoi material out there.
I can't wait for this new version, while the only one was quite perfect it looks already a bit dated (not that's a bad thing - per se - but I am excited for this one! \o/)

What do you mean "look out for"? Specify! :eyebrow:

Yup that look out was really ambiguous. Do you mean story wise or what other bl animes are good? Probably the former though. Firstly you probably need to be either a fangirl or someone who thinks that love knows no gender.

Ai no Kusabi is set in a complex universe where it's dominated by an artificial intelligence ie. computer program called Jupiter. It a very racist environment as genetically altered species called blondies have the higher power, after Jupiter that is. So what we get is love that knows no gender and no "social" status in a world that has strict rules that must be followed no matter what.

Ladies and gentlemen!

The time has come. Take a seat and enjoy it! There will be more, but this is what I currently have to offer. It might be a bit much for some, so unless you're 18, I advice you not to click it. (Looking away from the fact that I'm 17....:uhoh: )

I watched the first OVA yesterday, it's as good as the first time I watched it :D If you guys haven't seen the two original OVA's I suggest you take a look, they're very early 90's, but they're really good as well! If you're into hot sex (even though we don't get to see any tinky winky's lolo) this is really the movie for you! You can PM me for screenies if you'd like, some of them are too heavy for me to put out here :heh:

Normally most BL anime gets my scorn, but Ai no Kusabi is in a class of its own. Thirteen episodes of heavy story, action and a twisted relationship, I'm there.

I know right! I said that first!!!!

but......thing is I read through the vid comments and somebody mentioned that Miki is doing Katze since he voiced him in the drama CD too...Then I went to check who were the seiyus voicing in the drama CD...And behold this WTFBBQ.

According to the cd drama lineup.

Iason= Ookawa Tooru (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T%C5%8Dru_%C5%8Ckawa) WAT, he has an old man's voice :((((
Riki=Itou Kentarou (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itou_Kentarou) This could work, but I can name better xD
Katze= Miki (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miki_Shinichiro) Now that I think of, his voice is just perfect for Katze. Kinda like the insight voice.
Guy=Toriumi Kosuke (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toriumi_Kosuke) This one would be better for Riki imho

Hope they change it :(

13 ep? That's awesome!

I like the looks of new Riki a LOT. Not sure bout Iason though, I'll have to dig up my old OVA's for a comparison.

New PV Trailer Out

_xSostWXr8w

I sense a tragic ending.

The quality looks the most impressive. There is delay in its release because Ai no Kusabi animation team want to make it the most quality. They regard the work as top priority. Reception in Japan very positive.
__

Ai no Kusabi reminds me of nothing so much as The Phantom of the Opera (not just because both have characters named "Raoul"). The Erik-Christine-Raoul triangle is similar to the Iason-Riki-Guy triangle. Both have the good, appropriate lover pitted against the crazed and manipulative yet somehow more intriguing lover. But the similarities are approximate: Iason's problems are very different from Erik's, and the gendering and, thus, power relations of the two stories are necessarily different.

Yet the morals of Ai no Kusabi are old and familiar. The story condemns the damage done by 1) domination and 2) puritanism.

The high tragedy of Iason and Riki is that, though they love each other, their relationship is doomed to sickness because it cannot exist outside the framework of slavery. Iason would die for Riki, he'd let his mind be destroyed for him, yet he cannot grant him the basic freedom to make his own life choices. Ironically, as much as Riki loves Guy, he might readily choose to be with Iason... if he could be with him as a partner and not a slave. Iason's fear of losing Riki ensures that he will never fully win him, because Riki cannot help but blame Iason for robbing him of his freedom. (For me, there's an echo of Jefferson and Hemmings in this relationship, which makes me wonder how this story would have played if it were American and, thus, more directly influenced by our history of slavery.)

Good review of plot. (http://labingi.livejournal.com/65474.html#cutid1)

Oh my, the vid is fabulous! Thanks for posting. The graphics really looks top notch, actually better than most animes that I have ever seen..if they manages to keep up that quality that is. I have heard about the delay though, it was pushed back to spring 2010 if I remember correctly :(

I just found this thread. Thanks for it, and for the fascinating previews.

I've been trying for a couple of months to find out when this would be on. MoonPhase (http://www.moonphase.cc/Html/anime.html#ova) still says "autumn 2009," but that seems questionable now. The official site (http://ainokusabi.jp/) is silent on the date. I found one other site (http://www.saiani.net/article/131019873.html) saying that it was still this fall. And another announcing various related goods (http://www.comicomi-studio.com/special/booth.html) going on sale October 25.

Just found this thread, who would have thought there was one?

I remember stumbling over a subbed version of the original 1993 release by pure coincidence, or to be more accurate, at that time I was just hounding down methodically anything that had the goodness that is Toshihiko Seki in it. When I watched it first I did not have the slightest clue what the anime was about except that it looked to be vaguely sci-fyish and therefore interesting. Boy, (pun not intended) did I get a surprise. But it was a good surprise. I was impressed with the artwork, the elaborate depiction of the world and society and the complex personalities of the characters. And the great cast. The seiyuus made the characters all the more memorable.

I certainly intend to give the remake a try but I am not sure if I really look forward to it. What I have seen in the previews posted here (thanks for the links btw) the character design does not agree with me. I think I prefer the design of the old Iason - it practically emanated an artificially created ideal of beauty and something ephemeral while his design in the trailer struck me as generic bishounen fare. The old Riki design gave off a mixed aura of grittiness, underdog and aggressive insecurity - the new design makes him look like a model for organic health food. I certainly hope that the remake will not sacrifice the rich story and drift into mindless porn just to insure that the (mostly) female target audience gets all starry eyed and the revenue is maximized.

Are the seiyuus confirmed already? If the list above and on ANN is correct that would be another thing that does not make me too happy. It is a sad fact that Kaneto Shiozawa cannot voice Iason in the remake - but Toru Ohkawa instead? And Riki will be voiced by Kentarou Itou? But, but, wait: no Toshihiko Seki? Who will voice Raoul? No Sho Hayami too? Awww, come on. Actually the only choice I might be able to envision is Shinichiro Miki as Katze. The background music of the trailer sent shivers down my spine too - and it were not shivers of pleasant anticipation. Oh well. I guess we will just have to see how this all works out.

As an afterthought, I wished someone would bother to license and release the original anime with English subs on DVD somewhere in the Western Hemisphere. After all, Ai No Kusabi can be counted as a classic by now I guess and the only subbed version floating around is presumably a VHS rip with dubious image quality.

I just checked the official site again, and it has a banner saying spring 2010. Not sure if I just missed that before or if it's new, making official what Zaseka mentioned.

The official site gives the same cast as ANN.

This clip came as a bonus dvd with a novel release. I'm absolutely stunned, it's better than I have expected in terms of design and tech. I really love the sci-fi landscape and interior. Though I will have to get used to the new voice actors, Iason's seiyu just isn't working for me that well. I guess I'm too much used to Kaneto Shiozawa, r.i.p. :( Can't wait!
