View Full Version : Attachments and uploading Images

This is an embarrassing question to have to ask, since I imagine the answer is in front of me somewhere and I haven't found it in any faqs or anything... but I haven't ever really posted in forums before finding AnimeSuki's and I can't figure out how to add images to my posts.

Obviously I should be using the IMG tags, but how do I insert an image that's on my own computer rather than one hosted on a website? Do I have to run Apache or some similar program just to get images into a post? That seems like it would be an awful lot of work (and probably more than the average poster would be willing to do... or even know how to) and I bet the solution is much more simple, so...

Anyone want to fill me in, and fill me with shame by telling me exactly how obvious the answer is? :(

btw...the file cannot be uploaded from your comp...or from what i heard...it can...but you'll be the only one that can see it...we'll only see the little red x

you'll have to most likely find a site to host your files...there were a few out there but i dont know that many...one of them is www.uploadit.org

Thanks Superchop, that's basically what I needed to know... I guess I really do have to use Apache to run a webserver :P

To the AnimeSuki people in charge types. Why not make the site so that we can upload images from our computers. Please don't think i am trying to be a jerk or anything so nasty relies please. It's just that it is much easier and faster too.

Is it really that much work to find a webspace to upload the image to?
BTW, the feature you want is called "attachments", and I can imagine why it isn't activated: because every attachment would reside on the server and waste space. And I think if this feature is activated a lot of people will (mis)use it and there will be wasted a lot of space.

Hmm ok i didn't know that. Unfortunately i am not very computer savvvy. As for the website i seem to have problems every time i try to make one so for the time being i have given up on the website til my friend helps me out(he's taking his pretty little time)

As mentioned by The Small One, there are attachments which do allow images to be included but we do not have any plans to enable this feature (for very much the reasons stated).

I would still suggest you try www.uploadit.org
You don't need to build a website there, you just use the site to download your image and then you can link to it using the [img] tags.

Bandwidth -- pure and simple. We have too many users and use a lot already. Attachments would cost too much :heh:

Apart from bandwidth vB also stores attachments in the database
(although that could be changed with a hack), which is ugly especially
in the viewpoint of database backups.

In any case... sorry -- attachment's won't be enabled (not for normal
registered users anyway).

If you need to upload an image, see www.uploadit.org

I may also perhaps revive my own www.imagehost.org someday
(note: that link is currently not working...)

Firstly you can't attach images; but I don't think that's what you're doing -- just a confusion over words.

Inserting an image with a URL should be possible; maybe you can post the URL here and someone will have a look at it. The site you are trying to link to might not support "hot linking" (that is linking to images from somewhere not on their server). Try Image Host (http://www.imagehost.org), as that definitely supports hot linked images.

Quick question: Even if the site he uploaded the image to does not suppot hotlinking, wouldn't he still be able to see the image in the preview (others won't since they don't have the image cached)?

My guess would be that he isn't using the the tags properly; it should be like this:

[IMG]Url/of/Image

I think he managed to do that just fine, because he said that smaller images DO work.
He means the button "insert image" (the yellow one with the mountain) and when you use that, all you have to enter is the url, because the will get put in automatically.
Don't know about the quick question though.

It seems that you are doing it correctly. I can only think of two possible problems. The first is a problem with your image host. Try using http://www.imagehost.org/ as NightWish suggests so that we can be sure that it is completely compatible with our forum. I don't think that this is the problem though since you can post smaller images just fine.

The more likely solution is that you need to make sure the image ends in .jpg .gif or .png since if it ends in another extension our forum software might not accept it. I believe that it accepts .bmp also, but you really shouldn't be posting bmps since they are uncompressed. I'm thinking that your larger images might be in a different format from your smaller images.

I know that. It's a good thing, but I just thought I'd add the information about why bmps are bad since it might be helpful if Aoie_Emesai doesn't want to switch image hosts despite our advice.

If your suggesting to enable attachments then it's been discussed in the General Discussion thread (or was it the Feedback…)

Anyway the answer is bandwidth...

I don't think you posted the thread in the right place...

NightWish

What so you mean by "Browse"?

I'm guessing you mean a button that lets you search your computer for the image?

If that is the question, the reason is simple: You cannot upload your image to this server, so browsing for it on your computer is pointless. You need to host your image on another site before you can post it here. BlackCatXIII has said why we don't host images: Bandwidth (and disk space too thinking about it). We already use enough of it without hosting images too. Besides, there are some very good image hosting sites out there, so we may as well use them.

Also, I've moved the thread. The suggestion forum isn't for feedback, it is for requesting suggestions about good anime, manga or music to watch, read or listen to.

I've got a question how does one upload an image to the this site where you can see. A small version of the pic but when you click on it you get taken to a larger version of it?

As mentioned in earlier posts, you are not allowed to use attachments when posting in AnimeSuki.

If you want to post thumbnails of an image you've loaded on an image host site, then I would suggest using ImageShack (http://www.imageshack.us/). They offer the "thumbnail" feature.

Shadow Angel
2007-01-13, 08:13
Would photobucket work since that's where I have the images saved that I with add here?

xris
2007-01-13, 08:21
I've never used Photobucket but it's an image hosting site lots of people use (and I see you are using it already for your signature) so I don't see a problem with that. I assume it allows thumbnails, have you checked their FAQ to see if there are instructions on how to create thumbnails of your images.

Shadow Angel
2007-01-13, 08:28
I did check it I know what to post but when I post the image do I do this for example.

http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h126/Shadow-Devil/Nanoha/th_nanoha09.jpg (http://s63.photobucket.com/albums/h126/Shadow-Devil/Nanoha/th_nanoha09.jpg)

Or a different way?

Cats

Photobucket.com does not support thumbnails, altho it has lotz of other very usefull features.

Go to xs.to they support thumbnails, you can check your previeus images (the data is saved in cookies so if you delete the cookie you will loose the posibility to do so)

They're service is very firendly (2mb .jpg .png etcetera; only 1mb for gifs) and the best part is that they're cross-browser compatible and won't shrink your images down (like Photobucket, I've also seen PB add a lil' bytes to my files don't know why?!)

-----
Another very used site is imageshack.us (Opera users beware, the code/sytem is a lil' messy)

So... in order to post an image all you have to do is insert

"url=http://www.imageshack.us" "img"http://img175.imageshack.us/my.php?image=117026580163596iz6.jpg"/img" "url" ?

NightWish

Sort of... The URL/link part isn't really needed but if you copy the code from ImageShack, there is no harm in keeping it. Also, for an inline image you might have the address slightly wrong... following your link takes me to a page that shows the image (not directly to the image itself). You can work out the direct image link (in red below) from the page though. Incidentally, the thumbnail version, that ImageShack provides, will always have ".th" just before the extension (".jpg" in your example) of the full/direct URL. Not sure what all those quotes are doing in your example though... trying to preserve the text? You might want to try the tag :)

I think what you mean is this:[NOPARSE]http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3082/117026580163596iz6.th.jpg
Which gives:
http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/3082/117026580163596iz6.th.jpg... umm nice picture :)

O_o? Darn I need a tutor for this kind of thing. So how do you link that said image? Sorry for being quite dense at these kinds of things. >_<

NightWish
2007-02-12, 20:22
Depends what you are trying to post? The full image inline? Just a thumbnail (my example, possibly the lest useful, heh)? A thumbnail with a link to the full image (most useful, IMHO)? A thumbnail with a link to the ImageShack page with the full image and possibly some adverts (I think this is the default if you copy the "Thumbnail for forums (1)" BB code from the ImageShack site (http://img175.imageshack.us/content.php?page=done&l=img175/3082/117026580163596iz6.jpg))?

I think the fastest way is for you to follow that link above, and use the BB Code provided by ImageShack (the second one down).

grim_fixation
2007-02-12, 20:26
I think it's a thumbnail with a link to the full image or a thumbnail with a link to the ImageShack page with the full image and possible some adverts (Probably the second one).
