In all...... GO FANSERVICE!.....HAHAHAhaa....Thats all you can really say.
Anyway I look forward to seeing the new opening.
EDIT: New opening fills me with nostalgia. Features Rika like "Naraku no Hana" did. Not as many lyrics as both of the preceding openings though. I liked it.

Overall a great episode!
The fanservice was not as bad as I suspected it to be and it was a very funny episode besides the fact I didn't understand half of what was said
:heh:

A whole episode with fanservice as i expected but...it's still not good as a real comedy somehow, though there's a lot of hilarious scenes.
Well, the strong point of higurashi's not the comedy but i still liked the episode anyways
I really love it!! The 3 final scenes with Rika being alone had left an big impact so that i couldn't forget. When i was reading Saikoroshi-hen, i felt almost cried back then and i'm sure that the anime will repeat my "tragedy" once more time... btw, warn me if this violate the "spoiler's rule" >__<''
Though it's not really perfect but they really had good ideas when making it. Having Chie-sensei used "Black Keys" is one of main reasons made me laughing so hard:heh: (if you read Tsukihime, a visual novel by Type-moon, you'd understand)

:/ ....
I am a loss for words for the Soul Brothers scene.
That was..Awesome! The impact it leaves on us is..Wow!
Though, the lack of Shion made some people on Youtube mad..
It was great!
..But,well,we know how they'll fight in the other arc.
The many syringes of Takano was disturbing, however.
:D However,Keiichi's "fanservice" was..Brain bleach was almost needed during those scenes.
Well,that was..Odd.
What set off Rika's hinamizawa syndrome delusion-like moment with Rena?
..
Darn it,when does the next ova come out?
;__; Darn previews!
Anyway,the ova was a 10/10 with me :)
Well,that was..Odd.
What set off Rika's hinamizawa syndrome delusion-like moment with Rena?
Finding out what the world she's in is like.
Though, the lack of Shion made some people on Youtube mad..
Since the OP is based on Saikoroshi-hen, the one who isn't in it is actually Mion.
That was really much funnier than I thought it was going to be. Really looking forward to Saikoroshi more than this, but as an appetizer of sorts, it's great. I can't understand Japanese well enough to have been able to appreciate it fully, but I was laughing plenty nonetheless.
Rena's nosebleed and Rika's recruiting the aid of Hanyuu (and the subsequent Hanyuu "ni~pah~") were probably my favorite moments. Well, that whole scene, honestly, combined with the Soul Brothers sequence at the end.
I'm not huge on fanservice for the sake of fanservice, but every once in a while is fine. And this was done well. 9/10
Where does the OVA occur time wise?

Well, the preview does allude to Saikoroshi-hen... Which probably means we won't see an adaptation of Daybreak.
How many episodes is this scheduled for? 3?

There's total 5 episodes. Ep 1's released, so there will be more 4 episodes for Saikoroshi-hen. The final ep will be a adaption of Daybreak as they promised ;)

Yea,I kept on having to explain that to the people that commented on the videos I posted..
..
Was it ever said if this ova takes place within Matsuribayashi-hen?
:/ Or maybe Yakusamashi-hen,or Minagoroshi-hen, I don't remember Shion appearing in Matsuribayashi other then the big killer finale parts

Which Daybreak scenario will they use though?

Sorry for my silly mistake, there's only 3 episodes for Saikoroshi-hen, the other one's for Hirukowashi. (If you want to know more about this chapter, you can use the wikipedia)
The assumption is they will use Rena's Daybreak scenario, but I guess we won't know until something like August.
As for this episode....it was better than I hoped.

Certainly, the art was a MASSIVE upgrade even from Kai... Though I question the choice of Shion's two-piece.
Given the fact that Rena swallowing the magatama is what starts the fun insanity in Daybreak to begin with, it figures it would be the one used. And I know, Shipping is Bad, but Mion and K1's scenario would be fun as well.
Popularity has its advantages I suppose. Rena seems to be the most recognizable cast member...though they could throw us a real curveball and make it a yuri (or dare I say yaoi) pairing just for humors sake.

They're not using a scenario from the game. They're adopting Ryukishi07's existing adaptation of Higurashi Daybreak, Hirukowashi-hen.

Certainly, the art was a MASSIVE upgrade even from Kai... Though I question the choice of Shion's two-piece.
Ironically, I felt the complete opposite: that the new art is a massive downgrade.
My biggest gripes are most notably the "lifeless" eyes and especially the proportions. These are more similar to the first season (Satoko and Rika with very thin limbs, rather spheric heads etc), and the characters look terribly skinny. And somehow, Frederica's eyes got a very weird treatment, ad they are much more horizontal than needed.
At least, curves are alright with the girls (except maybe Mion and Shion chests, tad exaggerated despite they were already stacked to begin with in the previous series).
Good grief they didn't give the oily/shiny aspect that Vandread had, or it would turn into a borderline fake ecchi series look.
Isn't original release date is 25.02.2009 ? Of course, everyone knows about raw (with very interesting logo at the bottom), but really ?

I know! The lifeless eyes creep. me. out. And they aren't supposed to! (For the most of the time :D ) But yeah, I liked the Kai art alot. The Rei art looks fine on paper, but once they start moving it looks really wierd to me. :(

How unusual,I got used to the eyes after watching the ova.

Still,in the preview,they look..Different

I personally really liked the first episode! :D It was a nice beginning to a more serious middle story. :3
The art was nice too! ^-^ I thought the eyes were very pretty! *3* The only downfall to episode 1 was all the MANSERVICE. D8 I didnt like all that... Seeing a bronze Kei-chan butt wasnt very pretty. And he had a MAJOR wedgie or something! *has been blinded*
Though the Tomitake shield of doom was pretty epic! ;D
But so far, I give it a 9.5. ^^

I didn't like it.
Not one for fanservice, so yeah. It all felt rather forced, to be honest. Some scenes were rather amusing, but it did get very OTT very quickly.
It felt like it wasn't even Higurashi and could've jsut been an episode from any old fanservice-y anime.
Here's to hoping Rei will restore my faith in these OVA's =/

Pretty funny episode, loving the new opening. :D
Do want full version...... >:] anyone knows when it comes out?
Usually I would complain about this and that about higurashi anime, but ep1 of Rei is actually quite well done. They actually included tons of elements that were cut from the first two season, which is a nice touch. I dunno how the people who doesn't know about stuff like Soul Brothers or Angel Mort Festival would react to this epsiode, but I personally liked that they included those stuff back...and that would probably apply to the rest of the series, as the preview already mentions the dice-rolling element which was cut out from Minagoroshi/Matsuribyashi-hen
As for the art...as Klashkari pointed out, the eyes are weird sometimes. It would be great to use as Oyashirosama-mode, but seeing that it's also in the preview, I guess that's the direction they have taken. Another thing that gets me is the weird proportions/locations of the head and body for some of the male characters, namely Keiichi and Ooishi. Sometimes their head is lower than where their head is usually is...and that's taking into account of their posture at the time and such.

to me, i feel higurashi went so perverted T_T
Well there was always that hint of pervertion in the series. It was mainly in the background, early episodes in an arc before things got serious. While K1 is considered the Pervert of Hinamizawa, if you pay attention, you'll see that Rika is more perverted than K1.
And while you don't have Hanyuu is a swimsuit, I did notice that her dress seems to be shorter this episode.

I actually love the new style, I don't know why but I find it cuter than the previous two used. I even like the eyes, in fact I've been in love with the new style ever since the first picture was released a while back. It's closer to the style I like to see and aim to draw like myself. :3
The episode itself was interesting, I found myself laughing at certain parts and it was overall well done. A bit fanservicey but I've seen worse (*coughzeronotsukaimacough*) and it was already obvious that they were going in that direction anyway. My favorite parts were the ones with Hanyuu, Shion, and Chie. I found them to be the most entertaining to watch.
I found some parts to be a bit much, like Takano's introduction and a certain scene with Keiichi showing off his bathing suit. It wasn't perfect of course and there were a couple of moments I could have done without. It was definitely more of a joke episode and shouldn't be taken at all seriously, which is nice since Higurashi is a usually more serious kind of series. I quite like how Higurashi is usually though, and while this episode was nice to watch I really could've have done without it and skipped straight to Saikoroshi-hen. *w*
Speaking of Saikoroshi-hen, the preview looked pretty interesting, I can't wait to see the first episode of it! ^^

The artstyle looks different now from the original Rei poster,I suppose they changed it.
..I like both Kai and Rei's style equally, but I have to agree this is somewhat cuter :)
Time for commenting!~
Art - 8/10:
As people have said the art looks a little weird. The style reminds me a lot of the Negima anime remake: Negima!?. It looks very cutesy and the coloring style is designed to draw your eyes to it. But to those that can look past those two things they see the reality of it - sure it looks nice and cute, but really it doesn't look right at times. Proportions are somewhat off and the eyes look weird at times. Fact is I thought the art was being drawn by professionals - not teenage girls who only draw anime style stuff (no offense to those teenage girls). Otherwise it wasn't bad at all. Although I do prefer Kai style overall, I'll probably end up getting use to this eventually.
Story - 10/10:
The fact that they included the Soul Brothers in this episode means that the script/writing staff is taking big hints from the original game! About time too~ Although I bet they'll end up screwing up on some things eventually I'll give the storyline a 10/10 for this time around :P
OP/ED - 8/10:
Please do not kill me on this! It's not the songs or the art that made me say only 8 out of 10. Rather it's the design of the sequences. Now when I say design I mean the coordination of what goes on in the sequences.
OP - I loved the music and all but really the video was very...random. One moment I see Rika sitting around outside the school in a few positions, then Rika's hatchet flies down to the sky, then Satoko gives me a mean look and then I see the silhouette of Rika riding her bike while giant Satoshi head pops out trying to eat her! It wasn't very consistent at times in my opinion.
ED - The song was well...well I can't honestly say I liked it as much as I enjoyed the other songs, but it wasn't terrible. Yet once more I felt some things were very random. I didn't understand the giant green bubbles floating around everywhere for starters, reflecting everything. Was it suppose to symbolize the ones in it within different worlds? If so why not just use kakera shards like in the OP? The art here bugged me a lot more than the OP did. The way Hanyuu looked in the one scene with her head down looked pretty weird.
http://i44.tinypic.com/j79ri8.png
Rika's head near the end when she's being held by that woman (I know who she is but for spoiler reasons I won't say who) looks really big too. And I dare say the ED was even MORE random than the OP. Hell when I compare the ED to the OP, the OP looks damn organized.
Of course I could be looking into this too much. The first season's OP was pretty random as well. Yet Kai's OP was a bit more organized (don't get me wrong, it was random at times too) - it was less than 2 minutes but I felt like I was being told a story just by what happens. Yet the Rei ED just didn't make me feel that way.
Overall - 9/10:
Because I never give 10/10's! Everything has room to improve - nothing is absolutely perfect. As far as it goes I think Rei could improve as far as art value goes. I can't say much for story value, since this is just episode 1 but if they do as well with the story as they did in this episode then I have high hopes!~ (so please don't crash them to the ground <3)
Well that's all I have to say. It's pretty big so I spoiler tagged it :P

-already played Saikoroshi-hen before- XD; It's not the issue that: I don't know what's going on. It's that the coordination is so random.
I get the feeling it is suppose to be random.
Up until now Rika has basically known more or less what is going on and everything is old and done before for the most part. If Rika is put into a place she's never been and nothing fits...wouldn't that seem rather random? Like she is the one out of place...out of sorts, instead of the anchor of the world.

The fanservice was painful though...
My two favourite scenes would probably be were hanyu owns keiichi, and were shion pulls the crazy look at her tazer.

Just watch this oav :
Well , it was a fanservice episode , entertaining regardless .
The girls was all cute . It was hilarious that the character didn't act seriously like the season himself ^^

Rika vs Rena huh ?

Well this was plenty of fun to watch :heh:. Really does fit as the first of the OVA episodes. Just a lot of silliness and something you have to just sit and enjoy. The battle for Keiichi's swimming trunks reached a ridiculous level.
Have to give Rika credit since she went all out for this. Pulling Hanyuu into it with bribes and again getting the Angel-Mort fanclub involved with bribes. The dark side got to have a blast with this situation.
Might as well laugh now since the preview hit home how serious things are going to get.
That was quite an enjoyable episode. There was a lot of fan service but the funny moments like Tommy stopping a bullet with his bare chest (:heh:) more than make up for it. I also liked the fact that they animated some of the things they left out in the first two seasons of the anime like Chie's curry, the Soul Brothers and Hanyuu freezing time.
8/10

Unless they decide to change the original script, Saikoroshi-hen won't be scary at all. The preview can be misleading for those who didn't play the game.

Tommy stopping the bullet has to be one of the best scenes I've ever seen in anime.
As a Type-Moon fan who's new to Higurashi, seeing Chie being blatantly like Ciel surprised me, but it seems like it's on purpose, so....

Well, Ryukishi is a big fan of TypeMoon and asked them if he could make a character as a cameo or so. Originally, Chie was shown from the very start with a uncanny love for curry and using fork/knives or even Lecture T squares like the black keys...
But obviously, the anime series just skipped the detail. That said they still put a "special thanks" to TM in the credits, be it in Higurashi 1st and Kai.

I was pleasantly surprised to find out that there's going to be five of these OVA episodes.
Fanservice ep. Suitably over-the-top, which was what made it entertaining. Not really too much to comment on otherwise.
If you are going to do a one off fanservice episode to a normally serious show, this is certainly the way to do it. A fun and over the top romp with the characters we love. I give it a solid 9 out of 10 as it played out better than I was expecting and it brought me to the lulz pretty good several times. :D The new art style also looks quite nice.
Bring on Saikoroshi-hen!
Got some epic lulz out of this..the Takano and Chie appearances especially. ANd When Keiichi shamelessly admits to being a lolicon. :P

-Not really a fan of the new intro/ending
-Lol at Keichii being perverted at the girls
- was it me or was rika saying nipah a little too much?
-Rika was really evil! Bribing everyone to capture Keichii
-the shion taser part was scary
-Tomitake stopping the bullet with his chest was completely unexpected. i was laughing so hard.
-uummmmm did they really show a sea bear. I am disturbed
I really liked this episode. It made me laugh and every character was pretty much in it.
LOL @ Ciel
Takanos scene was a homage to Kohaku?
I hope episode 2 will have less fanservice and more plot!
They could animate Jesus arc and stuff :uhoh:
watched the first ep last night. Lol, After the girls recruit Takano & so on, I thought I was watching Higurashi Daybreak the animation, since they reveal their weapons like in Daybreak/Kai.... :heh:

Pretty sure it's been said a few times, but this arc happens BEFORE Masturibayashi-hen. :) And it's just.. really over the top, even if it didn't. xD
Considering the fifth OVA is suppose to be Daybreak...I expect more weapons/comedy at that point.

So nice to see Keichi, Rena, Rika, Mion, Satoko and the rest the cast again.
A really fun episode, plenty of Higurashi style fun. One needs to have watched Higurashi Kai in order to understand most of the jokes though.

I rather liked it for what it was--if nothing else it was entertaining. Even the new art style didn't phase me really. The only negative thing to me was the gave screen time to the angel mort crew--I just found that as filler, in a story that was already pressed for time--so many characters to fit in. I've mixed feeling about the rest, I'd love to see more Higurashi beyond just four more ovas, but only if they were as good plot wise as the story--it's hard to let go of an amazing show.

Finally found an english sub of Rei OVA #1 that I could download, and it was, of course, awesome.
I like how a squad of Yamainu in black diving suits could successfully hide in a translucent community pool.

Very enjoyable first episode. :heh:
But I agree with some of the comments about the art. It's really... shiny. And the eyes effect is rather strange.

Well this episode was great stuff in all of it's fanservicey glory. Not only did it spare no expense in offering glimpses of the girls in swimsuits (Rika and Satoko were especially alluring), but it also offered crazy manliness and over the top action of the variety that is normally found in a super robot series. Plus it actually made me laugh (aside from the perv-squad which I found rather cliche), which is no small feat for an anime nowadays.
I'm going to have to agree with everyone who thought the new opening was fantastic too. I find it blends a lot of styles on top of being just plain catchy and enjoyable to listen too so it's a succes on both the technical and playability level. The enjoy was pretty chill too.
I was wondering how exactly they were going to continue the whole story when I heard about Rei and thought it was just an attempt to cash in, but now I'm really enjoying it and see that it's mostly an attempt to have fun with the characters.....well for the most part since next episode looks serious again. I hope I don't have to see the end of the Higurashi universe anytime soon as long as they can keep coming up with fresh universes for it.....which given the nature of the series shouldn't really be much of a problem.

I gave a 8 because I was more hoping for a storyline rather then Fanservice. It was nothing that special, but it is Higurashi after all. ^^

I was expecting something with too much fanservice but it wasn't that bad. It's good that they choose to start with something funny for those ova.

Spring Break here in my country, and what better way to spend it but watching Rika, Satoko, Mion, Rena, Shion, Takano, and Chie-sensei in two-pieces bikini or full swimsuit glory!:heh:
Blessed are we for our eyes having been graced by the beautiful goddesses of Hinamizawa.
I suspect that it was Mion's scheme all along for Keiichi to be left with no other option left (casting aside the shameful swan swim trunks) but to wear the magical swim trunks for the purpose of having him fall in love with her.
Since the first Higurashi season, I knew'd all along that Mion actually harbors feeling for Keiichi, and the first Rei OVA episode clearly exposed at.

Is there any evidence that she even knew of their existence before her uncle called her? She sounded really surprised when he mentioned them. And even if she did, would she have actually developed a plan that hinged on Keiichi forgetting his own trunks at home?

I don't see how that's a revelation, considering that fact had been blatantly obvious since at least Watanagashi-hen.
Mion always has something prepared for punishement games.
Rena had slightly more perverted thoughts than usual. Or perhaps it was just more obvious this time.
I still think Rika is the most perverted one of the group. She's get some twisted thoughts this time around. Some of it might just be because she knows everyone so well and knows who Mion likes and all that she comes off as knowing way more about relationships than she should and seems to enjoy teasing about the sexual tension from time to time.

Agreed. However what she had prepared were the swan trunks, not the magical trunks whose existence she seemed to be unaware of.

I'd say it's because it fit with the nature of the episode.

I think this might be due to boredom. She wants to see a weird situation develop as it would help break the monotony of her life.
I gave it a 8. XD One word: FANSERVICE.
I love how Rena was being all perverted, and agreeing with what Guido said, I do think that some of the stuff that happened was planned by Mion. *is shot for being totally obsessed with KeiiMii pairing*
And then agreeing with Ithekro, Rika is really the most perverted. (I would think so because she is mentally older than anyone else, as she always knew what was going on from arc to arc, so of course she'd be the one to think more about that kinda stuff than anyone else.) Then again, Rena and Mion would be tied for second-most perverted. (Or maybe Keiichi, after seeing this episode. XD)

We have already been given the list of top perverts:
5) Ichirou Maebara
4) Kyosuke Irie
3) Rena Ryuuguu
2) Oryou Sonozaki
1) Rika Furude
I'm sorry of this is the wrong place to ask, but besides Rei 1 and Kai 24, I've only watched the first season 1-5 and played through the first game, so can I ask: Who is Ichirou Maebara and Oryou Sonozaki?

Ichirou is Keiichi's dad, Oryou is Shmion's grandmother.

So what you're saying is, you've managed to ruin at least half of both series by watching Kai 24.
That aside, Ichirou Maebara is rather ominous (only actually seen for 2 minutes in episode 18 of Kai). Oryou Sonozaki shows up a lot for a minor character, almost as much as Ooshi (almost).

There is/was a lot of echi material and dialogs left over from the games, some talks about rika prostition are in the tips. Riak owes mion some one and she tells keichi and satoko how mion told her she was going to sell her to a brothel, she does so using slang so satoko does not understand.

The OVA was well suited
What I do not like is that hitting the arch fanservice this makes things somewhat incoherent

Then that's so sad. The scene that shion stab satoko again and again still fresh in my mind.

Yeah, you totally watched Higurashi for all the wrong reasons. How did you cope with Kai?
That's a very good question. :D
Japanese murder mystery
genre : Drama, Horror, Mystery, Psychological thriller
^ surely right reason after all. and Kai has psycho characters too, still hope Rei have some.

Wow I thought I was weird for getting into the show because I loved seeing the full perspective of personality for each of the characters. That includes the "Dark Side" of each, but for the most part I preferred Kai to Ni anyway.
As far as the first episode of Rei I was throughly dissapointed. Dont get me wrong I loved seeing Shion in her bikini but that was about it. Im so glar Rei #2 went to a more "traditional" Higurashi show.
