History
For some time we have had some trouble with the forum. MySQL errors
were frequent, which lead to small forum corruption and inability to post
for hours at a time until the problem was fixed.

The presumed reason for this was that Burning Board, the forum software
we used on the old forum did not work well with MySQL v4. That, combined
with other problems with Burning Board made me decide to switch to forum
to vBulletin, version 3 to be exact, eventhough it's not out of Beta yet.

To convert the forum faithfully I had been writing my own conversion scripts.
I initially tested these scripts on a old copy of the database. But to make sure
these scripts worked properly I needed to test them on a current copy of
the database. So I asked the server admin to send me a backup.

Disaster strikes
On November 2 the server admin tried to make a backup to send to me, but
something went horribly wrong, which resulted in database data from the
end of July to overwrite the current forum data and also mess up any backups
he already had made.

Although he tried, there is unfortunately no way to recover the database.
Needless to say I'll probably discuss the backup procedure with him so that this
will not happen again in the future (or at least not this dramatic way).

Reset
There were many forum members (obviously a large group of them who registered
after July 30, but also members who registered earlier) that considered that if
the forum would need to be reset, a complete reset would be better. A poll on
this issue confirmed it.

So that's why the forum is now completely empty again. However, if you still need
to access old posts made before July 30, see this site for a backup copy of the old forum:
http://conversion.animesuki.com/BurningBoard/

FAQ

So what now?
If you registered on the forum after July 30, you will have to register again.

My old user account is still there, but I want a different username!
In that case, don't reregister, just mail me at webmaster@animesuki.com so
that I can change your username for you.

Is there really no way to recover old posts?
Not that I know.

This thread is closed for discussions, however you can discuss it here.

Update:
I apologize for putting a link to a test copy of the forum
instead of this forum for this thread for a few hours.

Sorry if you registered & posted on the "wrong" forum...

I am a bit old (let's say 25+) and I like anime, but people arround me tend to ignore animes or simply hate it. Its probably the "anime is for kids" mentality effect. Of course some anime are definitivly for kids.

Not being able to identify myself to a given population (the people arround me) feels like being a freak in a circus. Well actually I never been in a circus but I guess you understand the point.

Actually the passion is fading away. Is it because I watched too much, let say over than 100 series, ova, movies and that is becoming more difficult to find original animes or is it because I am getting too old ?

Then comes the "How old are you thread". I wanted to know where I belong in the population who likes anime. I wanted to know how old is too old for animes. I know, liking anime is a personnal matter, but when you discover that you are alone or just a very few in this situation you start scratching you head... This is a very social issue.

That was the purpose of the "How old are you" thread. A very personnal self centered purpose. Maybe i am not alone wondering about that issue so feel free to express yourself.

Actually I asked the moderator after the thread was locked. The previous thread was locked because it was likely to generate one line reply. After explaining the purpose of the thread, he [the moderator] ask me to post the thread again (including the text describing the purpose of the thread). Please lets make this thread a mature discusion, it really matters to me.

Oh, it was locked the first time, so let's post it AGAIN!
(P.S. Everyone! Vote "40 or older" to appease him, so he won't post it a third time!)

Edit: I tried to make this thread a very serious one, but it looks like you are going to bash me for doing that. That's not very helpful.

Just for reference you should of stated which mod gave you permission to recreate this thread, by doing so it'll avoid little confusions.

As for me i'm 20-24. For me age never really matter...I've been watching anime for years now starting with what i saw on Sci-Fi's Saturday Anime which was cancelled a very long time ago..and continued with various series that gave on other channels. Like you not many people around me like anime except for those little kids that watch DBZ and think their anime fans. It never bothered me that i was almost alone in the matter cause all that ment to me is the less people involved the less people that would turn into major fanboys and just go around showing off and strutting their "anime knowledge"

I asked Flash_Squirrel. [edit: Oups Flash_Squireel already replied]

As for me.

The first anime I ever watched was Akira [dubbed], I was arround 16-18; I really enjoyed the show. Then years passed until I met a guy at university who had posters of anime in is bedroom (about 3 years ago). I ask him about it then he told me that it was about japanese animation. I was very curious about one particular anime: NGE. So I rented the series from my local video store. That was the coolest thing I ever saw and the begining of my passion for animes.

Funny that you mentionned "major fanboys and going around showing off and strutting their anime knowledge". I was like that for a while but I stopped because it was just annoying for other people. In fact I restrain myself.

The age question came up when it was more and more difficult to find anime I liked. I was wondering if it was the age kicking in or it is the normal situation when watching too much anime.

I'm 19. Not sure how many people around here like or respect anime as I don't go out very often. I started off watching anime on the Sci-Fi channel late at night/early mornings. After that I got into Pokemon (yes.. I know  .) I liked it even though it was obviously kiddy, and I then became interested in Dragonball Z and the various other series Cartoon Network had been airing. I eventually found fansubs and DVD rips (yes, I'm evil) and the rest, as they say is history. I still enjoy anime a great deal, though I feel there haven't been as many great new shows lately as there werein 2003. Hopefully this will change as this year goes on, though.

I'm 24. I got interested in anime after downloading Trigun from a site about 1 year ago. I thought the name was cool, and wanted to see what it was. I loved it, and after about a month I stumbled upon AnimeSuki and the BitTorrent system.

Now I spend several hundred dollars every month on anime and (especially) manga/graphic novels, and have already infected 3 friends with this highly contagious addiction.

As for age, you can never be to old to enjoy anything. Age is irrelevant when it comes to enjoying things in life, only one's personal taste matters. After 20 years of American-influenced entertainment here in Norway, Japanese anime is a refreshing change, and one I certainly will not get tired of anytime soon.

Okay, personally, I believe that no one is ever too old to watch anime. You could be 40-50 and watch anime. I hope that in the future when i am extremely old and am still watching anime. Sure, you may be 5/3 my age but we still have something in common; and that is anime. Anime is made for all ages... from babies/kids; like Hamtaro. To teenagers.... to adults. There are no specifications to what age you have to be in order to watch it. Although i do think that there are limits to what you can watch. For instance, children shouldnt be able to watch hentai (and yes, i do know what it is). Sure, sex is a natural thing. I know it may be pleasurable, though i have not experienced it. Even so, for children to watch hentai wouldnt be moralistic. How would children know that sex is natural. They do not know enough to think that... they just see what they see... and they choose to enjoy it or not. If they enjoy watching it then that would be sad...

Anyways... I perceive that you just dont enjoy anime like you use to because you cant seem to find one that fits your style. What do you like to see in an anime series? Great animation, good plot, great character development, realism?
I have felt this way once... but it wasnt because i watched too much. It was because I was limited to watching anime. Since school was in the way and also homework I wasnt able to watch a lot. Then the spark of interest started to slowly dim. But then... my uncle helped me. In the free time i had, he gave me anime that I became addicted to.

Anyways, you may not like something for eternity. Hmm... when i was young, i use to love martial arts. I still do, but since i've been learning it. It just hasnt been as interesting as it had before. The point is... people change, you change, your interests change. Even so, you could still find something that suits you best.

i have watched anime for aslong as i can remember, i think i stumbled accross it on late night TV then found a few anime tapes among my grandparents videos and it escalated from there :D
my cousin likes anime and so do a few of my friends, my mum watches some shows but wont go near subtitled stuff (she enjoys her dubs)
i know i will continue to enjoy anime for the rest of my life, infact i will probably grow to enjoy a more varied amount of genres in anime

Well, i'm only 15, nearly 16. I'm almost completely alone, i know 1 other friend who has seen quite a lot, and then another who's seen a little. I don't know anybody in my age range who watches anime in England. As for growing up and still liking it, this has been something i've been asking myself recently. Am i going to still watch it when i'm older? The truth is, i'd love to, but i have absolutely no idea if i'm going to. The reasons behind this will mainly be university, when i go, and just how my life is going to progress in general since i'm still young.

I think if i do keep on liking anime, my genre boundries will decrease (i can't stand watching romance/comedies, they bore me SO much). Recently i've been looking for thought provoking manga's, or a manga with an incredible story. Monster and 20th century boys being some of my finds. I think its going to be series such as these that will keep me liking anime as i grow up. As much as i love One Piece and Hunter x Hunter, i feel they're both missing something. Monster especially made me realise what it is i'm beginning to find appealing about these series. Realism.

I don't plan to ever stop watching anime, although i know that if i do, i'll still keep on reading manga. The fact is, i don't buy anime, i can't afford it. I'm 15, have no job and have other things that are more important to spend my money on than buying 2 dvd's a month. I can only buy manga, since its cheap (i usually prefer it too). This could be more reasoning as to why i might still watch anime when i get older. I'm going to be able to afford to.

I am a bit old (let's say 25+) and I like anime, but people arround me tend to ignore animes or simply hate it. Its probably the "anime is for kids" mentality effect. Of course some anime are definitivly for kids.

Most people don't like anime, no matter how old they are. Even though anime is becoming a bit more mainstream, it's definitely not becoming something popular or "cool". Yes, it's true.. The anime fan base is mainly teenagers and people in their early twenties. But still..

I don't think you should worry about being too old for anime.. Someone made a thread like this a few months ago, and I replied to him right away. I personally believe that you shouldn't care what people think. But that's just me.. And who cares if a lot of anime is for kids? I don't see anything wrong with an adult liking something childish. I actually would think it's great, because it means they aren't listening to what society tells them a person their age should do and like.

Not being able to identify myself to a given population (the people arround me) feels like being a freak in a circus. Well actually I never been in a circus but I guess you understand the point.

There -are- some people your age who like anime. People who own anime stores in my city are always people in their 30's or even 40's. I'm going to use two examples that I used in a previous thread. First, I used to have a cartoon class on saturday's.. The teacher was about 32, but he was a huge comic and anime fan. I was asking him one day if I could ever be a manga artist, or if it wouldn't be well accepted in USA.. And he told me that tons of friends his age were into manga and anime and that some of them were cartoonists who had started drawing in manga style.. The second example is.. Well, my boyfriend. He's almost 27 and he still loves anime. He works at a gaming store and a lot of his co-workers are into anime as well.

Actually the passion is fading away. Is it because I watched too much, let say over than 100 series, ova, movies and that is becoming more difficult to find original animes or is it because I am getting too old ?

I don't know about that. I'm not your age, but I know one thing.. I'll always like anime. However, some of my friends have stopped liking anime when they were in their late teens saying they were "too old" or that now they seeked more intelligent and more mature things. Maybe it's society that tells you that you are too old to like certain things, and you're starting to feel this way yourself. ... If it's the case, I don't think you should abandon your interest just for society. But I don't know.

Maybe you're just really tired of anime. But I can't tell you how you feel, because most people I know who like anime have watched a lot of it and watch it every night and they don't get tired of it.. But it depends on everyone. It could be a lot of reasons..[/QUOTE]

Then comes the "How old are you thread". I wanted to know where I belong in the population who likes anime. I wanted to know how old is too old for animes. I don't think there's an age where you're too old for anime. I've met many people of all ages, even in their 40's or 50's who liked anime. Having any interest is something that's can potentially be "dangerous".. Specially if it's something that society says you shouldn't like. One thing really simple and stupid.. Imagine a person in their 40's really enjoys fast food and cheap candy, and they can't eat fancy foods. They hate it. However, everyone around them enjoys fancy food and they constantly talk about it.. That person is going to feel the same way. But is there really a reason that they should stop liking what they like and start enjoying something else? I don't think so. It's the same thing for anything else..

I'm 18 years old now and I dont feel to old for anime at all. I dont think there is a age when you have to say "Ok, now I'm to old for this I cant watch any more" It has more to do with how mature you are I think. I remember a few years back when I used to watch "Cartoon Network" that I loved "Cow&Chicken" Now I cant stand the stupid show, but I still find "Dexters Lab" quite amusing :heh:. So I think it has more to do with how your tastes evolve as you grow older than you actuall age, And these changes in taste dosent have to have anything to do with you age.

As for the people around me, they "puh" me all the time, "A 18 year old man watching Cartoons  " or the "Anime? that's those asian cartoons, eh? heh, heh".

But the people I know that are intrested in anime are generally in my age or younger, however I do know people in their 40:s that enjoy anime ( just not that many ) .

it's one of my friend who told me to watch this and that and ... anime. he was 22 at that time, and now i'm at least as addicted as him to this. i see it more as a reminder of the great anime we had on tv about 10 years ago.

I'm 8 years old. [ I wish ]

According to the pool, most anime fans are from 20 to 24. I'm not really surprised since anime clubs in colleges are so popular. ^^; It seems that a lot of people on animesuki are 18-19-20. I'm not sure, but I think there's a different in interest.. It seems that most anime fans who are in middle school or elementary school are interested in it casually and only like a few series. I noticed that the bigger anime fans are often over 15.

I think watching anime is a personal enjoyment and I don't care what the general public or even my close friends think. They can say I'm childish or whatever they want. I can tolerate their ranting as long as they are not overly rude. If you are looking for anime fans, there's always animesuki and many of us here. :D

Anyway, i have been watching cartoons for about two decades and I still watch them with my two brothers who are 8-10 years younger. Many anime fans my age have already moved on to more mature stuff. For me, I don't have any specific genre that I like. As long as I think its good and worth my time, I will still watch it.

I have a couple of other hobbies when I was younger, but some of them were long lost on me. Still kept some collected old stuff which I had acquired but they lay inside the storeroom forgotten anyway. Its regretable, but things have to move on. In its place, I have found new hobbies and I'm happy again. :p

So you see I'm probably not giving up on anime anytime soon, but I think you shouldn't be too worried even if you find your interest waning. IMO, anime is a form of entertainment, the fact that you are getting stressed out over it means that you still have love for it. I say take it easy and natural, perhaps take a step back and try to be more open. Once you have less expectations, you will find it easier to like something too. If the passion is really lost, there's no point clinging to it either. There should be other things in life that are worth your attention.

My humble two cents. :)

Anyways... I perceive that you just dont enjoy anime like you use to because you cant seem to find one that fits your style. What do you like to see in an anime series? Great animation, good plot, great character development, realism?

That's exactly what is the problem. I can't find a suitable anime that fit my style and group of age so I fell like being ... too old for anime. I select anime based on the review/opinion found on the web but I often end up with anime for youngs or nothing up to my expectation. For example, the plot of Unhabited Planet Survive seemed good but [edit] after watching a couple of episodes I tough it was too childish.

Lately I've been lucky and I found 1 serie I really enjoy and 2 good enough : (it took me a while to find these)

PlanetES (good)
Peace Maker Kurage (good)
Paranoia Agent (so far its freaking cool)

I don't really have a specific style. I am very open on that matter but I tend to avoid romantic anime.

1) Original plot/story

When I say original plot, it is something that I can't compare with an anime previously made. For example I consider Rahxephon to be almost a rip off Evangelion, the plot evolve differently though.

Haibaine Renmei is something I really enjoyed because it's different.
Full Metal Panic Fumoffu was something refreshing too.

2) Realism

I don't want to be much specific but PlanetES is one of the anime I like because of it's realistic side. (No sound in space and all the credible stuff about it).

3) Mature

Don't get me wrong here. Hentai is something I enjoy once in a while but I don't want to get turned on everytime I watch an anime... or else you know...

Mature for me is gore, violence, blood or anything a kid probably couldnt handle or wouldnt understand. I liked Mezzo Forte. The plot is very simple, was violent and has plenty of blood. I saw Kite and didn't liked it as much as Mezzo, dont remember why.

I almost forgot. I like mind bending kind or fucked up anime is nice too. But the plot must be solid.

Oh, I don't really want this thread to turn into a "suggestion" thread :)
Actually I want to "connect" with people of the same group of age as I am.

I'm 22, I have a few friends who enjoy anime but not enough to consider spending time and bw the download it. So I basically have to download my self nearly all I want to watch.
This year ( Third year of university in france , also known as licence ) I found another lad who's also an anime addict. the cool thing is he knows the founder of a french fansubbing team ( Anime Zev Korp ). That helps a lot since I can get much more anime than all I can hardly donwload ( I only dl on week ends and my parents only have 128dsl connection! ).

That's about it, oh yes, the only other family member who's also in anime is my younger brother ( 16 ) but he's only in fighting type ( like naruto, Hunter x Hunter, get backers... ) .
I guess when he'll grow older he'll appreciate the fact I purchased many mecha manga and the evangelion dvds.

There is no age to love anime, I first discovered it as a kid on the famous french kids show "le club dorothee" like probably all the french guys here, and I came back to it after my teens, where I , wrongly, believed anime with for kids!

Greetings. :)

I'm 20 and I've been watching anime since I was about 15/16, when my friend lent me Weiss Kreuz to watch. She then lent me Gundam Wing and I later branged out to Neon Genesis Evangelion and beyond.

Don't worry if you can't find anything you like right now, LOL Trust me, I'm in the same boat, having run out of things to rent. The big burst of mainstream anime in Japan and the US is only about 10 years old and still going strong IMO. (Hehe, I wrote an article on the history of anime, so it's only been a huge hit since 1995 which is why so much of it is on TV today)

To be honest, I have no idea how many series' I've seen, begun watching...etc. That's an interesting topic though. ^^ Not to mention my extensive anime collection (so that's where all my money went....) and my experience at Anime North.

You know, last year at AN it was one of the biggest turn outs ever with somewhere around 5000 participants and there were a lot of children around :twitch: It was really weird for me, because while I know that the big hits here include Yu-Gi-Oh! and that blasted Beyblade, I didn't see the con experience as something child-like. LOL And my parents would NEVER have brought me. And the anime they were showing, wasn't all for children, but no one really monitored that.

As for being on a university campus now, it's nice that there are some anime buffs and we have a club, where we sit around and watch four hours of anime together once a week. ^^ However, there's no one who lives around me who really cares for it or is interested in knowing about it. Makes it kind of hard to be with people when really you can't talk about your favourite topic.

But really, anime is an all ages thing, even though most people see it as kid's stuff. ^^

Well, as I understand it, the majority of anime is targeted at the teenage market. But being 24, this has never seemed like much of a problem. It's always possible for a talented team to make something that will appeal outside of its target age range, and on certain levels this will just happen automatically with sufficient quality. But familiarity with a medium will always have the potential to cause problems. On one hand, you develop an increased understanding of and affection for the medium, but on the other hand you come to recognise the cliches and repetitions, and there are only so many classics to watch. This definitely seems like a "familiarity" thing.

I'm 22 and will be 23 in May. I have watched anime when I was a kid(6 to 10) but I just saw it as cartoons and didn't even know they were Japanese, and somewhere along the way I stopped watching anime(because it wasn't available where I was living) and forgot that such a thing existed. Years passed until I actually had the chance to restart watching anime and when it did I got this great fealing as if I got something back that was taken from me! That's why nowadays I tend to watch as many great series(I'm currently following 7 series) that please me and I try to never get fed up with watching it, so that I can always watch anime until I die. I've never had any bad comments about me watching anime(that's because I rarely get out of my cave), and I will never change my mind if I'm called imature/childish for having such a hobby.

Oh, so, just because im 3/5 your age means that we cant connect, huh?!?!
Hah, just kidding.:D
Well, you really cant judge the reviews/opinions online because it is basically what the person who wrote the review thought of it. I mean, 8000 people could have watched that same anime and wrote a review that it was the best they had seen. But you might not like it like they do. It really depends on your anime "taste".

people are so old!
im only a 14 year old lil girl Hehehe! a while ago there was something like this on the oldboard and i thought the same thing! It suprised me how many older people were interested in anime, but then i didnt know much about other people and anime, it was just me and my comp!:D
I am 14 years old (a boy) and sometimes i think about that and think "wow im going to be 15 this year!" it just seems like such a BIG number! ^___^
I have been watching anime for a couple of years now and it has never bothered me about what people thought about my interest in anime...its like ermm "this is your twig and this is mine!" :heh:
I think that my interest in anime will grow as i get older as i will have more money to supply my anime needs and stuff!
ano hito you say you are pretty old so i think the reason why you are losing interest in anime is because over the years your taste has changed alot and now you have experienced nearly all so its hard to find something different/interests you. Gambatte!:D RA RA RA!!

So anime fans are from 15 to 24 years old. Anime has no age rate. People who think that anime is for kids are the ones who tries to be so mature(like my cousin who thought that Power Rangers are for kids when we were only 10 years old) or the ones who are so serious.
Actually, I'm a new anime fan so I can't say since when I started to watch them. But I used to watch some when I was around 8 years old. I'm now 16.

I'm... 29(!), and to be totally honest, my passion for anime/manga was never too strong to begin with. I don't make a habit of downloading a ton of anime regularly, and can resist the pull of the local comics/manga/anime shops without a significant problem. :) To me, it's a form of escapist entertainment, and I'm not looking for significant social/economic/political discussions within the titles.

Truthfully, any such plots tend to turn me off considerably to the point where I wouldn't watch the title unless there are overriding points about it also.

As for age being a factor, I tend to think that societal pressures matter more. I suspect that I would get more questions like "why did you buy [anime disc name]?" from my friends back in the U.S. than if I, say, had bought porn instead. People wouldn't bat an eye for the latter, but for the former, questions come fast and furiously. Odd, that.

Here in Japan, though, I see manga being sold everywhere, and adults read the books on trains constantly.

That and play games on their mobiles...

I'm 26 and have been a serious anime fan for about 13 years. I think it's mostly based on where you live as to what age groups are into anime. Here in Seattle I meet people my age all the time that have at least some interest in anime. I remember about two years ago I was at my friends house while he was having his cable/internet set up and we were watching DBZ (I like it so shut up) and the guy who was installing everything looked like a typical 30yo preppy guy but he started going off on what a bad ass Piccolo is for about 20 minutes (annoying but kinda funny). Also I'm not really into raves or anything, but go to a lot of raves here and you'll see anime showing up on the screens often. And really anyplace that deals almost exclusively with anime that I go to, I hardly ever see anyone under 18 there.

25 and been watching anime since... 4? i forgot which age exactly, but i'm quite certain it's after I'm able to read (how else could i read those subtitles?)..

right now, i felt as if i'm losing passion in anime, but fear not, i'm not losing my interest in manga. If I have to say why... I guess it's because the community I lived with in real life doesn't really condone anime..

the way my life goes right now doesn't allow me to watch any anime either. Usually I'd be so beat up after work, that i don't even feel like downloading anime, let alone pressing the play button on the player.

can't really blame my workshift either (10am to 6pm, or as early as 4am to as late as 2am) because i do need the cash for everyday living. FYI, I work in a fabrication shop, assisting with pre-production goods assy. If inspiration pops up at 2am, then I'll be at work at 2am, welding, machining and stuff. Hardly any time to take good care of myself (i know i haven't been living good, lol), let alone taking care of my other stuff.

FinFangFoom, still in Redmond I see... well, I'm back in Seattle now.

Well, I have quite a few interests ranging from computers to travel to sports; speaking of which, I have to find the fencing association here in Tokyo as I'm looking to pick up the sport again. Aside from that, people back in the U.S. does - or did - look askance at me when I read my manga on the train, and there are only so many hours in the evening for me to spend on watching anime.

While both anime or manga is in the mainstream here, there're two rather significant barriers to my getting either. The first is the language, and the second is the cost. Anime is not cheap in Japan as many had pointed out in the forum.

Judging from the posts, the majority of people who likes anime think that the age has nothing to do with it. It's nothing highly scientific but I came to the following conclusion. Anime is the same as for any other kind of passion : sport, gaming, collecting rocks and so on.

Now that I think more about it, my opinion highly differs from people who likes animes. I mean whenever I read reviews on the web, I don't agree with 90% of them. No wonder I can't find people around me who likes anime. People are so different in nature and culture. They have different opinions and tastes.

As for the passion fading away, it's probably a sign that I have to take a break and turn to something else for a while. However I'll finish the series I started.

After reading the first reply, I was afraid that the thread would turn into a flame war. Fortunately the people has proven to be mature enough to animate an interesting debate and I am thankful to you.

I'm 27 (nearly 28). I started watching anime when I was very little although I didn't know the difference bewteen anime and regular cartoons back then. As I got older I kept watching anime, mostly on french tv even though I didn't undersstand it all too well. Later on I kinda lost sight of anime as I started going out alot.
At university I came in contact with a number of real anime freaks, which made me restart the old hobby. I've been watching it ever since.

Basically I don't care if people find it childish or not. I've been able to introduce some of my friends and relatives to anime, most don't like it, some do but after seeing it's more then violence and sex (some over here consider it that way)but that there are as much different types/genres of anime as their are other tv-series/movies. At least they respect my hobby :).

For reference : the first anime I can remember seeing is Goldorak: a mecha anime from the seventies :) but I was really addicted to saint seiya when I was like 12-14.

Anyway don't worry about what others think about you, they are probably just as concerned about what you think about them :heh:

I have another theory to bring to this topic.. Most anime fans are from 15 to 24 here.. But I think it's a GENERATION thing. ^^ I mean, think about it. Anime got popular in the 90's.. Of course there aren't many anime fans in their thirties.. Because when they were teenagers and children, anime wasn't available in America.. Or it was, but in really small quantity and hard to find. I think that when anime came in the early 90's, it was still very unpopular..

Also, the new generation is more acceptant of "different interests", it seems.. It's a lot more common now to see young adults interested in things that are considered childish like cartoons, anime or other things..

hmm. 22 years of age myself, been watcing anime for...... at least 5 years.

honestly the first thing i watched and actually knew it was anime was DBZ on cartoon network. however, about 3 years prior i had seen Akira and thought it was great, if not a little strange. i have friends who have a casual interest, some who have little interest and i have 2 friends who have a great interest, but have no time. one of the two with great interest is the one who got me watching akira.

anycase i had been watching cartoons for .... the past 19 years, (if i was watching them before then, i can't remember) and i remember being quite the fan of transformers and thundercats when i was little.

anycase i don't think it's going to be a thing i grow out of, mainly because as i get older i have more means to aquire such things, although i usually read manga, as i don't seem to like as many anime series i've seen lately (One Piece and Full Metal Alchemists are what i watch as of late).

Hehe, well this brings up an interesting point of something I've noticed. A lot of people who like my favourite anime, are able to reccommend another anime that everyone's able to get into. Something big right now on the Hikago forums is talking (OT) about Fullmetal Alchemist.

In general, if you find yourself a big fan of something, you should ask the people of that fandom for their advice. ^^ You'll find it often works out pretty well.

Some people just like cartoons. It doesnt matter how old they are, they will still read the funnies in the paper and watch the saturday morning cartoons. For those of us who have been exposed to anime, its like finding a treasure trove of cartoons that cover all genres. I have yet to come across a friend, regardless of age, who I couldnt show at least one anime that they thought was badass or cool.

I'm 23 years old and have really been in anime and manga for about 4 years. Prior to that I just liked european comics. I don't think I'll stop liking anime and especially manga anytime soon. Even though I might have trouble finding good anime series, good manga keep flowing in keeping my interest high.

I have another theory to bring to this topic.. Most anime fans are from 15 to 24 here.. But I think it's a GENERATION thing. ^^ I mean, think about it. Anime got popular in the 90's.. I'm 25 now and got interested in anime long ago due to the pretty pictures. Only got serious when i have the capability to buy what i want. I would think that to indulge in anime and manga, you would be have to be at a responsible age.

1) You must be able to buy the dvd, vcds, manga... you have to be a very rich kid...
2) You must be able to stay up as long as you want and use the computer as long as you want if you want stuff for free.
3) If you want to go for conventions or do cosplay, you have to travel and that means money...
4) If i have kids, i wouldn't let them watch most of the animes on the net.... not untill they have established interest and are mature enough to understand not to take most of the stuff in animes seriously...
5) Kids have to concentrate on building the basics...

So you think that anything not violent and bloody are childish? Interesting...

I am older now than I was when I started reading this thread... you should know better than to ask a woman her age! :nono:

I got hooked on comic books because they were what my cousin (who is 35 now) used to help me learn english when I first came to America.

I got hooked on Anime because the comic book shop owner was an anime fan, so he played anime on his TV in the shop.

I think the first Anime I saw was... Robotech. Or maybe Voltron? It was one of those two.

I'm 21 (birthdate 7/16/1928) and I've been watching anime seriously for about 4 years. My first anime was......Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles :p no seriously, it was the original Dragon Ball which aired when I was young (4th/5th grade I think) early on Saturday mornings. Then in high school I discovered Cartoon Network, then DBZ, then Gundam Wing, Tenchi Muyo, and things escalated. I've been into manga for a couple years ever since I found Love Hina (which I have read over 6 times).

As for being too old for anime, I don't think you can ever be too old for it. Its just hard for you to identify in your age group because of the ideals of the people growing up in your time (cartoons are only for kids). My father is 50 though, and he still watches anime with me and buys some as well. So there :)

Yet another age thread but at least with some interesting discussion within it, I'm glad someone pointed out that one reason for there being greater numbers of people aged 15-24 that watch anime is simply because it has only really started to take off in a big way these past 10 years, or so I gather, (even moreso with the rise of the internet) yet there are more factors, namely the majority of people in online communities anywhere fall within that age group and that your life tends to move on after 25 or so (finishing university, settling down with a partner/family etc) and many interests fall by the wayside.

As for me, I'll buck the trend here a little by saying that I know I won't be watching anime in 10 years time, maybe not even in 5 years time, or if I am it will be in very small amonts, simply due to the reasons above. My various interests allready fight tooth and nail for my free time, add to that a career, a home, possibly a family at some point along the way and with my more serious and productive interests taking a priority (such as writing and playing the cello). I can just see anime getting squeezed out, as indeed has allready happened to online role playing (Once I left school and found a job for my gap year) that previously consumed a large proportion of my time.

I'd say that age wouldn't have too much to do with your enjoyment of anime, indeed as I have grown older I'm finding myself actually watching shows aimed at a lower age group so I can just sigh and smile, and there are still several newer series that anyone would enjoy, (take KgNE as a perfect example of a "serious and mature" storyline) just that other factors can lead you away. It will be interesting to see a thread such as this in 10 years though, no doubt the 25-39 age group will have swelled considerably as some fans stay with anime as the years roll on.

It seems that the reason your passion is fading is because you dont have anyone else to enjoy it with. I suppose that is expected because the older you get the less and less people stay interested. Looking at the poll response, anime is mostly a teenager, early 20's kind of hobby. Once you graduate and real life takes over, it is only natural that real world priorities take over.

here you're not allowed to drive by yourself until you're 18, so please don't complain :o

it isnt that i hate not being able to drive, i hate that others are, and i cant.

when real life hits you, you sometimes must give up what you love... like your wife :)

Hiya ^^

I just turned 18 recently, and yeah, im very much into anime.
It was like a few years ago ( like ... i think about 4 years or 5 years ) when a friend of mine was visiting me with a video taped, said something about "mecha's" and stuff ... i didn't even know the word "anime" back then ... oh well ^^"
At first i was like "WTF? It's drawn O.o" but i came to like it pretty fast...it was NGE, and i watched every single episode in TV ( and they aired pretty later, after midnight ... )

And that kinda got me into it, i started researching on the internet, eventually met someone who was friendly and has a large knowledge of really good anime ^^

I kinda became his student, and he send me various anime, gave me tips, helped me how to get them ect. ect. ... he also refered me to animesuki a bit longer then 1 year ago ^^

But i think he was never active on the forums ^^"

Oh well, the funniest thing is - he's using the same nickname as i am, and we have both nearly same interests too XD

But i guess im getting off topic .. ^^"""

Anyways, ever since then Anime became valuable for me and i started collecting them, and im still nowhere near being tired of it, i just love watching anime, and since i have serious problems with many things... they are good to get your thoughts away from all those problems of the harsh real world ... but i mostly avoid those romantic stuff, because it would hurt my feelings... y'know, love has never been anything good for me, i ended up being hurt every time~

But i like nearly every genre - but only romantic ... i like shonen, shojo, i dont even mind yaoi ( wich is pretty rare for a guy ) ... the only thing i hardly dislike are those story and senseless hentai anime... but oh well ^^"

All this stuff has gotten me into manga too, not as much as in anime but oh well ^^"

Just turned 19 last month myself. Although sometimes I feel like I should be 10 or something. lol :bash: After highschool, it's more like bumming around. Meh...just college, work, and anime for me these days. :P With the occasional clubbing and drinking...oh wait :uhoh: I don't think I'm of legal age for the drinking part yet. :heh:
I've been watching anime for about 6 years; I got into it during my early highschool/punk/goth/wtf? years. I kind of miss those days...cRAzeyy lol
Movies that lead me into the anime scene were Akira, Ghost in the Shell, and Ninja Scroll along with the Toonami stuff. Even though I had seen Sailor Moon before that, but I hadn't known at the time it was an anime. The rest, as they say, is history.

And that my friends is the story of my life! :D Exciting isn't it??!

What's it with all the alcohol? Am I missing something? :twitch:

I'm a 21 years old crazy student and started watching anime when I was... uuuh... around five!
There was a great TV-channel called Tele5 back then and they aired shows like Queen Millenia and Ulysses31. I think I didn't understand as nearly as much as I do now - but I got addicted in what I believed where cartoons at that time and stayed with my love up to today. And I don't even think about quitting! ^-^

There are times I don't watch as nearly as much as I'm used to, but I always seem to come back to the topic. :heh: We'll see what future brings, ne?

i dunno how ur supposed to feel, but i think i feel old because everyone around me, they act really immature and stupid. this makes me feel like the black sheep of my group of friends. im always the spoil sport of a nasty or wrong joke.

i think that everyone is old, taking into consideration the life span of other organisms on earth. i mean the fruit fly's life cycle lasts a mere week or so (not sure bout this, learned it in grade three). but i guess looking at an average human's life span (for males about 76 or something and females around 78?) then i am relatively young. well it doesn't really matter, because its just the mental state of mind that makes you feel old.

I turned 30 a couple of weeks ago. Joy. All that did was make my health insurance cost more and push me into a new age bracket in polls like this. :) My first Japan-made cartoon was Battle of the Planets (aka G-force) (aka Gatchaman) when I was 6. Actual anime was Ranma 1/2 at 18.

It's unfortunate that cartoons are considered "for children" in Hollywood. Motion pictures are truly an artform, and I think animation compared to live action is like painting compared to photography. IMHO oil or watercolor paintings allow more creativity to be conveyed from the artist to the viewer. However, children find simple drawings to be more accessible than photograhs, but that doesn't make photography more "grown-up".

Besides which, at the beginning of that last century going to the cinema was considered "for children", and at the beginning of the century before that reading fictional books for pleasure was childish. Nowadays we have film schools and scholarly degrees in Literature to make these pastimes suitable for "serious people". Bah.

As for anime getting stale, it's true that a good number of animes get famous because young people have not seen the earlier animes which have been recycled. As other life responsibilities and joys crowd out the time us old folks have to search for good animes, we often will try out these famous animes and then get disappointed. Thank the goddess of anime that she sent her saints to make animesuki... I've found a lot of unknown (to me) gems of anime by always downloading Episode 1 of any series that shows up on the Home Page (shows like Princess Tutu, Jungle wa..., and recently Ajimu Kaigan Monogatari). This has to be the most useful site on the internet.

I' still in highschool.....Is that a bad thing? Oh well, I've been into anime for just about the first 14 years of my life (I'm 14). My father who's Japanese always read manga to me, and we watched a lot of older anime when I was growing up. Now pretty much all I do is watch anime, make music, and sleep (other hygene procedures also). I think it's cool that there are a lot of old folk on the forums too.....that reminds me, where's Pathy? I find that most adult s that 'lower' themselves to the level of their youngers (dunno if that's the right word), are the ones that can actually understand and relate to us. There's too many adults that think they can't associate with younger people because we're not 'sophisticated,' 'intelligent,' etc. So a cookie for all of you that are out of college and still on the forums!!

She said she would be away from the forums for about a week to go visit her kids. Hopefully she didn't fall into one of those foam pits. :uhoh:
I don't think many older people have to lower their standards to mingle with the younger folk. Some people are just "kids at heart," so to speak. I don't have a problem hanging with people with different ages. To me, age doesn't really matter since some ppl are more mature for their age, or in my case, a bit immature. :heh: There are times when I feel I should be 12 or 13...I can act like such a giddy little girl sometimes, it's scary! :twitch:

*g* I remember the time after my graduation - our class went to the netherlands alltogether on a four day vacation after the exams... and then there are two words: coffee shop.
So, all I could see and smell for those days were funny white clouds in the air wherever I went - which was bad since I don't like grass and the nastier things at all. It was still fun though. I just couldn't agree with some peoples definition of "holiday" :heh:

Alcohol is the same, the only I drink are the occassional few drops of rum in my tea when I'm cold. Well, and sometimes a beer when I'm out with friends.
Clubbing etc. is just fine without any, I tend to end up as the driver anyway, so it would be a really BAD idea to drink anything ^-* Therefore I'm used to search my fun elsewhere and proud of it! :D

I agree with that, but I take the view that when older folks enjoy the fellowship of younger folk it's more from giving the younger folk a chance to be more mature, rather than the older folk having to regress to a lower level.

Its all about youth baby.

For what? The only advantage I see is firm boobs. :D Talk to or have sex with a teenybopper as all you get is a jaded, selfish personality and fumbling technique. :( I've always thought of selfishness as being the main sign immaturity, with babies being the prime example of being nothing but selfish. I'm 14, turning 15 in July. I started watching anime when I was really little, I used to get up real early to catch Dragonball. You can imagine I was pretty happy when they began to show it again. By that point, the Pokemon craze had come and gone here in Massachusetts and I had been one of the biggest Poke-freaks out there. At the time, I didn't know what the word anime meant, I thought that Pokemon and Dragonball were made by the same company because they were oddly similar.

I soon became a huge Dragonball Z fan and that's when I started coming online to go to various sites. This introduced me to a number of animes that I know consider much better than DBZ. The first really good anime I saw was Trigun on adult swim a year ago. From there, I started downloading plenty of other animes that were subbed. The thought that I was watching these animes before they came out here in the US really amazed me.

I now download a few animes regularly, but I definately haven't seen as many as most of the members of this forum. In my school, I just keep the fact that I like anime to myself since the only other people that like anime are people that have seen a few episodes of DBZ. So, even though I am young compared to many of you, I still am somewhat of an outcast in that I watch anime.

I hope that anime becomes really popular in the future and that tons of people will watch it. I hope that watching anime will be considered "normal" by most people. Even my parents give me a hard time for watching anime, saying I should "grow up". The animation stereotypes where I live are horrible. I just shrug it off, I love anime too much to give it up just because other people think it's "kiddy". Most of them haven't watched it anyways.

When I look at most animes, I see a show that can be watched by someone for their entire life. It might seem odd to think of yourself watching it when you're considered "old," but I'm guessing the new generation of "seniors" will be much different from the current. By the way, I consider 60+ to be old. People in their 40's and 50's are still young in my eyes.

I'm 22. I watched anime since I was a very little kid...my mother used to make me shut up by turning on the TV and making me watch Mazinger Z, but I don't remember any of it. Cartoons and Anime were constant things for me on television, but I kinda stopped watching them in junior high and high school. When I came to college a friend of mine asked me if I knew Evangelion (and I had heard of it), and so I tried to find where I could get it. I ended up downloading tiny VIVO format files of it (I managed to get realmedia format for the latter half of the series), and we both watched it in like a couple days. That's when I started on my road to otakudom, although I admit I'm not hardcore enough to be otaku (I'll get there soon, though). So yeah, I've been downloading anime for 5 years now. Before then anime was always a TV or VHS thingy :D Now we have lovely DVDs!!!

I'm 16 (17 in august)...
There aren't too many animefans in my neighborhood (none that I know of), but Finland itself is full of them...
one thing that prolly drops the popularity here is that you can't get Anime very easily here, there are like 3-5 shops that sell them and about 3 of them sell only Anime movies......
and you can't order abroad unless you're over 18 and have a credit card...

I myself started my hobby after seeing GITS:movie (the old one)...
well actually I started manga before that, and then borrowed the GITS VHS from the library...
but the first anime I saw (without knowing it was anime), was prolly Ginga Nagareboshi Gin as dubbed when I was something like 7 or 8...

That's great that you can overcome the urge not to look foolish in front of everyone... I know it's much greater when you're a teenager. You must have seen some pretty good anime in order to overcome that. :D

And yeah, anime has enough variety to satisfy people of all ages... some of it appeals only to mature adults (not talking about violence or sex). Titles like Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou, or Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, or Legend of the Galactic Heroes. Anime is just a form of entertainment like movies, books, concerts, or television. They all have performances which are most suitable for children, teens, or adults.

I'm 16 and i loved anime for a long time. I don't usually go around and tell people i like anime. usually when someone says they like anime it means they watched a few episodes of Dragon Ball Z or something. There are a few people that like anime where i live. Thankfully i know some otaku to help me get fansubs and all that good stuff. i don't think that i'll ever really get tired of anime either. it is always there for me. i guess that one would call me a closet otaku (seriously, look at my room and you will see nothing anime related, open my closet and its like a shrine) when i watch anime people told me in a few years these shows will be meaningless, that was 4 years ago. i don't think i'll ever get tired of this stuff :)

2. In repsonse to that user avatar that says "Nee kikoemasuka" (Can you hear?).

If I acted a little less recklessly I could more believeably pass off as a fairly older person... online and maybe even IRL.

I'm almost 45 and personally I don't care who knows. I don't think age is significant. I have friends who are 20 years older them me and some that are 20 years younger. I've been watching anime so long that I can't even remember the first show I watched, but I do remember watching Star Blazers back in the late 70's. For years it was hard to get any anime in Canada. So now that I can get fansubs, I'm making up for lost time. I've got both my kids watching (18 and 20) and even my wife. :)

hey all. CaptTylor, translator for Anime4Life, here.

Just thought I'd add my age to the poll, I'm 32, and I've been watching anime (knowingly) for about 10 years now. A friend hooked me by showing me Ranma and NukuNuku. Until then, I assumed all japanese animation was low, 70's quality art, all robot stories, and all bad dialogue. The first time I heard it in the actual Japanese, it came alive for me, and I just had to study the language. That's why I'm able to translate now. (though I'm pretty slow -_-) I will NEVER get tired of anime ^^ I'm especially fond of all the "fanboy" anime out there... the ones with the cute girls as main characters... Though I think they're getting a little TOO fanboy, with all the panty/bra shots (though there is something.... compelling... about it 0_0) - favorite animes: Fushigi Yuugi, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Wolf's Rain, ...Card Captor Sakura, ...Sailor Moon. *^_^* ahem. Least favorite: anything with mostly guys, or mostly giant robots, doing mostly fighting. YAWN. -_-... come to #anime4life in irc.rizon.net if you wanna chat a bit ^^

I'm a 22 year old who hasn't been watching anime since they were 10. In fact, I watched a few series in my freshman year in college, but didn't really become a somewhat addicted anime fan until this year... :hmm: Animesuki is to blame for that.

Well, it's seems like I'm one of the younger ones here....///_^ I'm still 17....and really don't want to turn 18 next month..... Being an adult sux...

But to give some meaning to this post:

I have few friends that like anime,

- my best fried only likes some art,
- the little brother of one of my friends, considers me to be the fansub download god, cause i seem to be the only one in this town that knows how to use bittorrent.
- One of my friends says he likes anime, but can't even find the on button on the comp. So I'm buring all the fansubs for him....
- one friend who's still into ShinChan......*shiver*

But none of them like it so much as I do. They don't bother watching Naruto in the middle of the night...or waiting in front of the comp for a down to finish even though it will take another 2 hours.

As far as I know, there's only one other animefan in our school, but he gets all his stuff imported from Maleysia...so we don't have much in common :heh:

Yep, started in the late 60's, and had a couple of follow up series in the 70's and 80's . Ultraman used a lot of the same set/studio/effects as the Godzilla movies from the same time period. :)

Well I turned 21 on November 12, but I look as if I were a 16 year old kid, for that little reason every one asks me for my ID or my age everywhere I go. At the same time, when you look young, people tend to underestimate you just by the way you look. I work as a caterer, and I have been ask the same question over and over: You look too young to be working here, how old are you? >_<

Damn I remember when I came to the US alone when I was 18 and a half (It has been 2 years and a half now) with no knowledge of English and taking ESL classes at the University of Virginia... IT WAS HELL! Back then I looked as if I were a 14 year old kid >_< and all my teachers and class mates (who mostly were over 26) would treat me as a little kid. Some times they will put their hands on my head to then start messing up with my hair >_<;; OMG and when I told then that I was in the country by my self without having any close relatives and friends, they were all telling me: oh you are a great boy! you are so brave! Do you not miss your mama or your papa? At least, I didn't have to stay with the same group all the time because I never had to complete an ESL course due to the fact that I was being promoted all the time. Otherwise, I would have died of depression :(

At the present time, I'm an avid college student and anime watcher. Although, I have lost of things to do, I always have time to watch anime and to visit the forums. And I don't know how, but I need to look a little bit older so that I won't get underestimated anymore >_<

I'm 19 and i got hooked on anime when I was 12 and saw project aiko for the first time on regular television. It was so different from any cartoon I had see before because the characters and situations were so real to life i guess you could say. Then I started taping the anime that came on at midnight on scifi and i got a chance to see project aiko again. I even got my brothers to watch. I wouldn't feel bad about being older tough because my dad watches anime and cartoons somtimes himself and he's twice my age. :)

I'm 7 of 9 in the 30-34 category (being 30 myself) :)
Greets go out to the other eight...

First contact with anime was a long time ago with some video game magazine over here who had a Japanese editor in their team, and one day they started doing anime articles about certain anime series and anime games (all in Japanese, of course). I can still remember that I liked it instantly. However, due to the total lack of avaiability (and even if you would've got something, it would've been all in Japanese :heh: ), there was nothing I could do, until this improved and first imports (in English) became avaiable, and I've been a big fan ever since then (probably around 13-14 years ago).
I'm showing no sign of slowing down, in the very opposite, since I discovered BT end of last year, it increased a great deal :D
Together with the avaiability of Manga and anime which is quite godd by now here in Germany (especially Manga) and getting better all the time, it's only getting stronger.

Too bad that there is not any anime on television in my country (Netherlands / Holland).

Chuckle, I'm in the 40+ range. Life may begin at 30, but once you cross 40 doctors begin to look at you like you're wearing an expired "Best If Used By" sticker. ;)

I don't believe there is such a thing as being too old to be interested in anime. Sure there is some anime which is mainly aimed at interesting children and young adults, but there's plenty that might be of interest to adults (or persons without regard to their age) for various reasons. I just think of anime as a visual medium for telling a story which avoids the expense and constraints that would apply to a live action production attempting to tell the same story. Guess I just can't see being prejudiced against one visual entertainment medium (anime) while favoring another (live action) and saying something like "It's perfectly fine for an adult to watch Akira Kurosawa's live action 'Seven Samurai', but because it's anime an adult shouldn't be interested in watching Samurai7".

Well, I'm 26. Although I'll be 27 in Dec.

Anyway, life begins, IMO, when you're 21 and older.
Life gets more interesting when you're 30 and gets better as time goes on. At least that's what my mother said to me Sept 4th, when at 50, she got her 3rd and 4th tattoo. My mother is also a gamer. Her and my father. So yea, life gets better as you age. Who says you can't do everything you want as time goes by?

I've loved every age I've been and will love every age here after.

I am 26 and I love anime. I first started watching it when I was 8 yrs old and have been watching it ever since.

25...too old to be enjoying all the highschool-based anime out there.
...but right smack dab in the middle of Otaku Highway, trying my best not to become roadkill.

I am one of those college-generation anime converts in the days of Gundam Wing on Cartoon Network.

I'm 25, and I started watching anime since I was a little child, back on those mid 80's my first love was Yattaman (http://anidb.info/perl-bin/animedb.pl?show=anime&aid=2504)... How nostalgic :)

My favourite has always been the highschool kids comedy romance, I got hooked into it when I was an highschooler myself and I never abandoned the genre. Probably because I remember those days very happily :)

I'm 16... About 4 years ago I started following anime. When I was much younger, though, in 4th and 5th grade I remember watching the American dub of Cardcaptor Sakura - 'Cardcaptors' as well as Dragonball (early in the morning) and Sailor Moon.

I am 17 I got into anime when I was 6 years old though I barley remeber but my cousins always used to rent anime from the video store and by that time my parents were getting devorced and I used to be by my cousins alot and ended up wathing series and movies like Fist of the North Start, Vampire Hunter D and the regular DB and Z series. And as i aged i started to wath more and more and I still have tones of series to watch and although I am 17 I still wear the DB T shirts not Z to show people their was a world before Z. And as for ageing and loseing interest I dont think that will happen to me soon becuase with mature series like Monster and Mushishi and many more out their I will be into anime for quite awhile.

I'm only 15 and getting tired of anime sometimes. I haven't watched -alot- of series but I do find it hard to find -great- anime. It seems most of the anime these days are all the same in a way and that no originality ensues ): Just what I've been experiencing these days.

How did I start? The good old Dragonball Z and Sailormoon episodes on Cartoon Network of course! Moon (something) power!

im 17 right now and for me getting into anime was a slow process but right now i have seen lot more than 100 series. There are some anime fans in my school and since im not the only one into anime, its not really like being an animefan is seen as a bad thing even though lots of people cant understand our interest. On the other hand there are also people (like friends from elementary school and my brother) who absolutely cant stand my interest in anime.
But about the age i think its pretty much like with computergames: 20 years ago computergames and animeindustry wasnt as far as it is today. Though older people fail to find their way into anime and games. But now that both industries are well developed a lot more people are growing up with them and though the timeline when you are "too old for games/anime" is constantly moving higher. Its nothing special anymore to watch animes with 30 and 40 and as long as the animeindustry doesnt die, the agelines will even move higher.
The only thing is that (in my opinion) non-japanese cartoons and comics are 1) comedy or 2) for children..... theres nothing besides comedy that is targeted at adult or older teenage viewers and though cartoons cant campete with the movieindusty and though this steriotype of cartoons being for children has been established (and i think especially disney is to "blame" for that).
But japan isnt like that. manga and animeindusty are blooming in japan. There are fantasy, action, thriller, horror, romance, (...) animes form all genres targeted also to older audience. throught the canstantly improving storywriting and animationquality animes would be able to compete with lifeactionmovieindustry. Animes get licensed for airing all over the world, but i think its the steriotypical behaviour agains cartoons that cause (at least in my country) the shows airing in tv to be only for youger audience to 90% (dbz, detective conan, onepeace, pokemon, digimon, prettycure, ...). And because even animes that air here are 90% only childrenshows, there wont be many older people (outside of the animescene) who watch the other 10% of animes (only X serie and escaflowne come to my mind now as for good animes that aired in germany) and though only very few will come to realize that the quality, enjoyablility and maturety of a show doesnt depend on if its animated or lifeaction, but only on the show itself.
Though i realize that, i hope that the animeindustry and the quality of the animes/mangas it produces wont ever decline and that i will keep watching and enjoying animes for a long time and that i wont be descriminated or laughed at by society because of that!

I'm turning 19 in less than a month. I've been watching anime since I was 10 or so.. but on and off. The first fan-subbed series I downloaded was Dragonball GT over 56k modem :D . I've been watching anime on and off because of college. Sometimes I find myself skip studying for a major exam and watch anime .. and that's reallllllllly bad!! My boyfriend doesn't feel too much for anime because he doesn't like to read (subtitles). Preferably, I like to listen to Japanese, although I don't understand anything at all, rather than watching anime in English because I think it does not fit.. and most of the time the voice of those voice actors/actresses aren't very pleasing.. It sounds horrible most of the time!! So... I don't really have many friends who watch anime .. but, whatever.

And... I just finished watching Boys Be but couldn't find a thread for it.

I'm 18, I saw my first non-YTV anime(aka pokemon lol)... 1st yr of HS when I was 13... I didnt touch another anime till like 11th grade when I was 15 :P

Now I'm 2nd yr of Uni and 18. I dont consider myself an anime freak.. or I guess "Otaku", I havent watched hundreds of animes, my dvd collection consists of Akira which I got for my bday and a love hina DVD which I got for XMAS :heh: Anime to me is just another medium of entertainment no different than the Simpsons. I look out for any good animes that come out, but I dont find myself often in huge discussion about an anime or collecting manga/figurenes. I have been to anime cons, and have looked into anime clubs at both of my universities... but I really dont fit in nor find it of much interest :/

Despite going to animecons, trying out these anime clubs, and so forth... I have never understood the obsession with anime and collecting thousands of mangas, figurenes and so forth lol. I suppose if thats what you like, go for it, as for me, I dont care how old I'll be, if a cool anime comes out, rest assured I will be on it ;) Come now, it's just a TV show... I mean, thats liek saying "I'm too old forTV". You may be too old for some shows on TV... but not all of TV in general :/

I'm in my 20s and I still watch japanese anime and amercua cartoon such as the simpsons or sponge bob....why? because it's better than watching crappy show on chanels like mtv.

To me japanese anime has better quality of stories and better meaning then the show you see on american television (like those crappy dramas and reality shows).
