To become the wife of the future hokage...heh, in Naruto-land maybe. :)

My goal in life is to be happy no matter what situation I'm in, and to be truly in love with the man that I'm with. My current goal is to graduate from college so I don't have to deal with bullshit classes anymore. My career goal is to find a dream job that I'll enjoy, and one that pays very well.

EliteJounin - Cool topic! I think everyone wants to die happily. :)

Cool, some nice goals so far:

n would love to b a professional gamer as well some day if i can b 1

sigh..if only the rest of the world would adapt that from korea...what a nice job that would be..

Well..my goals in life are just around the corner, but I'll list them anyway:

-Develop a quantum computer. (they have a working partial quantum computer at the University I attend..I'll probably be working on it in a year or two even before I graduate.

-Take down Microsoft..with quantum computers (bleh..I hate capitalism..)

-Visit Japan..hopefully knowing enough Japanese by then

-Find the legendary "soulmate"... it sure isn't easy, but I have two mediums to work with ;)..

-Hopefully extend my life 100 years or so (A recent Discovery magazine predicted that someone born in 2000 would live 150 years..and Wired magazine predicts even longer.

Now because I like to comment :):

EliteJounin: Nice high set goals!, the higher you set them the better I think

gravitation: gravitation...you would make a very good traditional wife..if you were a girl..but I guess its a good house-husband? Anyway, hope you find the guy you're looking for :)

Mad Cat: Should move to USA..might get some fighting then.. =/.. unless we can replace GW Bush with Howard Dean in 2004 (yay! go Dean!).

Wandering_Youth: I have a good friend that graduated from a culinary academy... He is such a good cook! I love eating his food, even the most fancy of restaurants dont compare to a cook's homemade cooking :).

My goals right now are rather simple. First of all, I want to become a cop or to join the army. Thus I need to train and study a lot. Otherwise, I'm just aiming to become stronger, through martial arts and regular training.

My other goal is to be as laidback as possible. Just chill. Thus the two goals are conflicting with each other. >.<

Oh well, I'm too lazy as it is, so I should go study again I guess~

For me:

Go to Japan
Have a good job
Have a wide manga and anime collection
And last of all, living life with no regrets!

Oh yes, and one more thing, me wanna master the language of Japanese! :D

My goal is to get as much sleep as possible. In the summers I can often go with only being awake an hour or two each day. One neat thing is that once you start getting massive amounts of sleep you sleep lighter and can control and remember your dreams easily. I dream so much I can have trouble telling if I actually did certain things for real or not. ^^

Also food bills are much lower than when I used to run track and needed massive amounts of calories. I'm trying to think of a bad thing, but I can't. ^^ Might get me put on Prozac since I'm generally depressed as well? Sounds fun. Aha, worst part is watching the bank account shrivel (I worked a few years and now take a grad class or two whilst lolling about, hehehe).

You know...telling less anecdotes might be a good goal for me too. ^^

just 5 things actually
-graduate
-get a job I truly enjoy
-get married to someone I'll love for the rest of my life
-get couple of kids
-enjoy the rest of my life

I don't care that much about money, it's good to be average :D
things I'd like to do, but not a goal in my life:
-get my drivers licence (both motorcycle and car)
-get a Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R
-get an electric guitar, and learn how to play it properly

Just be myself and live life to the fullest.

Goals I want currently.

1)Learn to play a electric guitar
2)Able to spread anime and manga to Singapore and probably worldwide. As in maybe an official regonised club in Singapore spreading all kinds anime and manga regardless of how old or new it is, mainstream or not.
3)Get a nice job
4)Get a nice girlfriend
5)Learn Japanese or as many other languages (I love language)
6)Set up a metal band, as my country Singapore does not regonised metal, no radio station airing metal music, they thinks that metal is santanic or whatever it is, gonna proof them wrong, if we can be the next generation of Iron Maiden, MWAHHAAHAHA. (Thinks too far)

I had goals:

1. finish college with a computer science degree
2. live on the coast in Orange County, California
3. work in the computer field
4. have my own apartment to live in by myself

I achieved all of that 4 years ago, and I'm about as happy as a guy should be. :D

The big goal now is to find God, or anything spritual. It's my favorite hobby besides anime and martial arts, and I figure I'll be dead a lot longer than I'll be alive. :( Seems important.

if we can be the next generation of Iron Maiden, MWAHHAAHAHA. (Thinks too far)

Some short-term goals (stuff I want to accomplish in the next few years):
Get all the Love Hina DVDs and manga. (It was probably this series that found my inner anime addict.)
Finish college.
Buy a telescope (cuz I like looking at the night sky).
Get back on stable financial footing (important for my long term goals).

Long-term goals (stuff I want to accomplish before I die a tragic, agonizing death):
Build a large anime+manga collection.
See the Milky Way (http://spider.ipac.caltech.edu/staff/jarrett/2mass/3chan/gplane/mway_night.jpg). I would also like to see the Northern Lights (I was asleep the night of low latitude auroras caused by the solar flare a few weeks ago. >_< ).
Live a good life with my wife. Good means we fight, we agree, we cry, we have joy, we don't talk to each other for awhile, we get lovey-dovey, and most of all... we have earth-shattering sex. /me hopes his abilities in bed will be something other than nothing special. :heh:

There's nothing wrong with having no goal, and it's pretty close-minded to think that somone who has not yet figured out what to do with their life is a waste of space. Has our society becomes so goal and merit oriented that people who simply want to live are cast off as a waste of space?

Goals are good, but keeping life within context is better. Goals like "getting into a prestigious college" are serve little purpose. Are you so focused on having "School X" on your resume that you ignore the purpose of education? Maybe I'm too sensitive to this stuff given my upbringing and environment. Many parents I know drill these kind of goals into their kids without really caring about their happiness. Goals like "becoming the best sport z player," "getting the the highest grades and SAT score," "using all that to get into school x," and so on are VERY close minded and rarely translate into happiness. I believe that people should do things simply because they like doing it. If you end up at the top of their field, awesome! It's far better to get there because you love it, not because you set out to do it. The latter is, in my opinion, for people who do know what they want and have been force fed goals by others, usually parents. Everyone is so focused about getting merit x and y so they can get merit z, it's disgusting.

With that said, I have no idea what I want to do with my life. All I know is I love helping people and being there for people. Right now I'm interested in biochemistry and I'm learning about that. Whichever field I choose, I hope that I can use it bring good to people and help othes, all the while thoroughly enjoying myself. After all, merits are meaningless once you're dead, but your effect on others lives on forever. "All you have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to you." -Gandalf

"getting into a prestigious college" are serve little purpose. Are you so focused on having "School X" on your resume that you ignore the purpose of education?I just wanted say that, as someone who got my science bachelors degree at a 26k/year tuition "prestigious" university and am now getting a graduate degree at a 7k/year one, there is a huge difference between the two experiences.

The expensive uni had an awesome faculty for one. My *freshman* year Intro to CS prof. programmed telecommunications satellites and my OS prof. worked for Bell Labs (and so had real OS programming experience) and both were great teachers. My Physical Biochemistry prof was an MD/PhD on loan from NYU and still made sure to be very accessible. In contrast I've found the faculty at my current school is rather like a crap shoot and they've often just droaned on instead of adding something personal to the class.

The Honors program at the expensive uni included a course where you met with a faculty member each week for presentations about their research and then the school paid your salary if you wanted to do research for that professor (so the prof's actually did want you since it was seperate from their grants). One of my classmates was working on clincal trials of gene theraphy (the amount of modifed adenovirus needed to actually have an effect was so great that the toxicity killed the patients, lol) and another worked on combining antibodies and radioactives to kill cancer cells - really interesting stuff, not just test tube turning. There have been a couple research oppurtunites at my current uni, but it's more you have to go out and look for them. My previous school actively tried to involve you and gave the profs incentive and a standard procedure and the school did this for undergrads no less (IMHO 3/4 of all undergrads are useless whiners who just want that piece of paper, hehehe ^^).

Putting that extra effort during your high school years into getting into a good uni can radically alter how the rest of your life proceeds and my experience certaintly recommends it. Don't expect the work to stop once you're in, though. The workload for a course in my first school similar in topic to one in the second was about tripple and staying at the top of the class rankings was much more difficult (although I admit class rank in uni/college isn't that important unless you are moving on to med school or something higher like that).

I think that having a goal is good, as long as you give it your best. Like Kenshin said, we all fight for our own justice (or something like that), it is the same as we all fight for our own dreams.

I particularly don't have any goals, I am just a student that likes anime, and etc. I just haven't found what will make my soul move.

So you think that... having goals like getting a good education or being the sports player they can be serves no purpose? I find that a bit redundant because... the majority of the people on this forum, or in the whole world would wish to be the best they can be. You dont think that having goals like some of mine... or the other people does not bring happiness to our lives?

Just because we have goals, which seem like it will not bring us happiness, it doesnt mean that it doesnt. As much as i dont like school, i love education. It brings me happiness. Knowing that i will gain as much knowledge as i can brings me more joy than even I know.

Even so, if your goal does not bring you happiness while you are trying to achieve that level... whichever goal it may be. In the end, you will be happy that you achieved it. Dont you think that is worth it? Even if it doesnt make you happy right away...

Why do you think that trying to get into a prestigious college serves little purpose?
Its a goal.... and a good one. I believe.... that the purpose of life.... is to become the best person you can be. It brings me happiness to know that i make others happy because they are proud of me. To become the best person i can be, i think, would be worth everything.

Oh and... sorry if that sounded rude... i really didnt want to sound mean. Its just that i disagree with what you're saying... :D

I have to agree with earlier viewpoint that having goals isn't really all that necessary.. Sure, if it helps you gain better control of your life maybe it's good thing to have goals. Still, one should not never be too vigorous as for reaching goals (especially long term) because the dissappointment is always great when you find out that goal is out of your reach.

What i'm saying is that having goals is great as for giving direction, but they doesn't necessary set the outcome. Anyday you're life can turn upside down, and all your dreams and goals shatter in second. Therefore one should always be open for new directions in life and never stagnate on one goal. This doesn't mean that one should not conserntrate on goals at fullest, but rather that one acknowledges that things aren't always going as they should.

Currently my own goal is to finish my education, and gain stady income .. maybe family one day. Always hope for best, and fear the worst, that's my motto :)

This above is one of those glass half empty comments...

As long as a person doesn't give up on their goals, then they are never out of reach no matter how difficult or ubsurd the goals are. The human brain and body can accomplish some amazing things and all the time people are accomplishing feats that most would say are impossible. It doesn't matter how naturally skilled you are, with enough pure effort one can feel even the highest of goals in their grasp.

There is indeed such a thing as failure, but a person has only truly failed when they have given up. If you stay confident and keep pushing forward there will be no disappointment.

I can use my mother as an example: She was born and raised in a horribly poor family with a mother that had somewhere around 5 husbands. She had to drop out of high school during 10th grade to work. Even so, later she went to college even after having her first child (yours truly), got her Juris Doctor (JD, law school degree) with near-perfect grades even though she had to raise me by herself for much of the time. She now is currently an Assistant Attorney General for her state, chief of anti-trust for her state, and is pushing towards U.S. Attorney.

Her example pales in comparison to what many people have done, all with their own confidence and always pushing to their goals.

^

agreed...

a very gifted person will never accomplish anything without any drive. The drive, the lust to accomplish is what separates those that succeed or fail.

Sometimes, the path is more worthwhile than the actual goal. Sure, you may try very very hard for a goal and not reach it. But it can be a learning experience and by the time you're almost there or realize you can't get there, your goal may change to something else easier or harder... The important thing to remember is that if you really want it, don't give up on it. If there is even a chance of it happening, give it a go. or as my counter-strike teammates would say... "storm the front!"

well, anything is possible as long as you're sure you can do it and do it right the first time

my "goals" are not having this or that, but succedding in my studies (like many others now)
i was good in high school, i failed in college (considering the one i was in) so i missed the train to go to "prépa" (special high level classes after college) because of my own will. this "chance" got away
now i am in a university and i must get the best grades possible on the first try or i'm fucked to enter those "engineering schools"
until now (2 years on 4), i got almost the best grades of my class ... so my whole life in on the line for the last 2 years.
I succeed > happy me :)
I fail > i kill myself ... not kidding

SirJeannot: There is always another way. If you can't get into an engineering school in Europe try the US, there are plenty here and quite a few famous ones (MIT, CalTech). Heck, I get to observe the beginnings of quantum computing right in front of my eyes at a public university. Of course for a public university it's considered one of the best for engineering (Oklahoma University), but it wasn't hard at all to get into.

Though for now, if you are doing great for 2 years out of 4, just keep at it, never falter to stress, and stay confident.

If worse comes to worse, get a simple blue collar job to work at for a bit..get yourself organized, and have another go. I'm not a psychologist or anything..but I know I've physically seen people succeed even in the most dire of situations.

I think you missed a critical point of my post, so let me remind you:

.. Therefore one should always be open for new directions in life and never stagnate on one goal. This doesn't mean that one should not consentrate on goals at fullest, but rather that one acknowledges that things aren't always going as they should.

So, one doesn't need to give up goals or anything, but rather be ready to change them. Very topical issue right now is Bush's iraq war. Bush has set himself a goal to win that war, and he does ANYTHING to do that.. only problem here is that he doesn't seem to be caring about the dreadful casualties that has started to pile up from that war.. even he's very own country is starting to suffer (quess where the money to that war is coming from). Lesson to be learned here is that people can become blinded by they're goals, and not notice all things they ignore when heading blindly towards them.

Sometimes, the path is more worthwhile than the actual goal.

That was very well said Dragonz20.. I think the way towards the goal is much more important than the actual goal. Even if you never reach your goal, at least you have come long way to achieve it and experimence is never vain.. just confidently continue to another direction, and maybe you have better luck there ;)

I agree, but you didn't say why a goal should be changed, or what makes the journey worthwhile.... it's the people you meet and the love you feel towards them and from them. Sounds sweet enough to choke a honeybee, but it's true for me.

A high goal usually allows you to meet other dedicated, hardworking people. However, if the dedicated people you meet on the path to your goal are all scum and expect you to be the same, then it's time to change goals. It's not good to be labeled a success if you have to be a son-of-a-bitch to get there.

You are the only one who will evaluate the results of your goal seeking. Make certain you know what you are doing!!!

Sure, your path may change, I agree with that, but I disagree with the fact that you said that if you do fail then "the dissappointment is always great when you find out that goal is out of your reach."

I'm simply saying that a goal is never out of reach, even if you do cant succeed at first. Only giving up makes them out of reach.

As for Bush: As much as I dont like him, I know that the war sounds a lot worse because of the media. The casualties haven't even hit 300 yet, and for a war, thats not bad considering most wars end with 100,000+ casualties. The media is just being highly detailed about every single death that it sounds a whole lot worse than it really is. Still..it's probably annoying for people fighting in the war for an unknown cause..

Edit: 300 American casualties that is..I dont know the exact number of Iraqi (non-terrorist) casualties but it still isn't as much as other wars. We lost a lot more people from the World Trade Center terrorist attack on 9/11.

I have one simple goal, World Domination. All I want is to rule the world, maybe have a few dooms day weapons, some islands with rediculously big lasers. And if this is anyone else's goal we should get together, do some lunch, and then when you're not looking, I'll destory you.

But short term goals,
1. make the rest of student leadership do some damn work and stop complaining all the time.
2. Get into a good college, If an admissions person from University of Chicago is reading this, PLEASE PLEASE ACCEPT ME, I'LL GIVE YOU GOLD.
3. Explode My High School (to the FBI, jk, jk, jk)

So i meant that might to ensure that you always did the good choices.

To me, real goals are nothing material. They are made to keep you alive.
And i could even say that goals far beyond your reach are very interesting, because they bit by bit become a great motivation, since you will spend a part of your life trying to accomplish it....

Do you go to UC Berkeley? I think I remember Prof. Lenbowlaski (forgot name :p) was doing quantum computer rsearch. I really wanted to be a part of that too, but Berekely grad school didn't accept me :fingers:

As for my goals (opens up ToDo list on PDA...):

- Finish my undergraduate degree in Computer Engineering (will be done in 3 weeks!)

- Get my Masters and PhD in CmpE at UT Austin

- Meet a girl who is cute, smart, fun, cute, and has similar interests as me

- Get a R&D job in computer architecture/software engineering research at HP or some other well-known company. Money doesn't matter; I just want to get a job that is interesting, challenging, and helps benefit humankind (fortunaley the jobs with that description pay $BLING BLING$)

- Don't let work dominate my life, and have plenty of time to spend with the cute girl I found and any offspring we produce :D Plus I want to have time to spend watching anime, reading manga, playing/composing music, and creating works of art

- Learn as much as I possibly can about Linux and use that knowledge to obtain l33t hax0rz :heh: Plus write at least one successful/popular Linux app by myself.

I can't help but laugh at some of the people with goals like "Marry Inuyasha." [that's not the one, but you get my point]. I think that some of the Naruto related goals are cool, but a bit obsessive...
I admire the people who want to learn Japanese and visit Japan.

I'd like to
learn more martial arts [especially the more passive ones, like Tai chi, Pa chi, and Naginatajutsu].
go to college.
get a job that I'm happy with, even though the pay isn't the greatest.
get a cool wife. Doesn't have to be the hottest thing on earth as long as she's pretty, nice, and supports my interests.

I'll list smaller goals when I can...

Sheesh, people that know me should know by now...

My goals are... World Domination... then Universe Domination. I would like to skip world domination and go stiaight for the universe but I've been told that probably won't happen.

Nothing that's worth while to do is easy after all. If I somehow fail(don't count on it). I'll fall back on my job as a CS(computer science tutor) and support myself through the rest of my Clinical Psychology degree(it's a hobby of mine to figure out what makes people tick). Then, I'll be corrupti... I mean, curing all the sick people into my slav... I mean healthy people.

The problem with psychology is that you can't get a job with it if you're half-assed about the subject, you need to have passion/interest and have at least a master's.

I do have a big list in my mind of things to do before I die next to my people to mug in the near future list.

Sky-diving...

tell a cop "you're out of your jurisdiction BITCH!"...

have sex with 2 girls at the same time...

oh and invent a type of martial arts(I'll call it Jae-Kwon-Do)...

make an orginal anime series(I have some pretty good ideas for an anime)

drive faster than 200 mph(I've done 150 only so far) oh...

and last but not least, beat Anne at chess(she's too good and I'm too bad. I've never even taken down her queen).

I figure if I can do most of those before I die, I've led a pretty good life.

Short-term:
*Graduate from college which will hopefully be next year (7yrs of undergrad ehh, but I'll have 4 degrees)
*Payoff my credit card bill and car payments (next yr and it will be mine)
*Find that compatible lady

Next summer will be interesting b/c I don't know what's going to happen

I really want to do this for a year or 2.
If that falls through then hopefully grad school
If that falls through then hopefully find a job that I like

Long-term:
*Find the job that I truely enjoy doing.
*Find that compatible lady
*Marriage w/ the prospect of little tikes running around.
*I want to create the world's first working veritech fighter (no joke) which is hard as hell and will depend on where I work.
*Have a nice, big, comfy, high-tech house
*Finally get some sleep
*Have fun whenever I can includes travelling, and butt loads of anime and video games
*Learn as much as I possibly can from whatever resource is out there
*And either live a long life or find some way of cheating death (if I help design something that can go just below the speed of light...yeah I'm going to ride it on its maiden voyage)

World domination takes too much effort, it's easier to just have enough power so when push comes to shove, you can shover harder.

Hmm... My goals:

Finish my Philosophy degree
This one could be hard... My university doesn't seem to think that running a five hundred level course for one person is a good idea. So I wait in limbo until at least five other students decide to sign up for the course. Changing universities isn't much of an option, the only institutions with similar degrees won't accept my previous courses as transfer courses or credits. ;_;

Finish my Teaching degree
I started this out of boredom while waiting for my Philosophy course... Now I'm nearly done it. I wonder what degree I'll persue next out of boredom. :eyebrow:

Pass my TESOL Certification course
Only a couple more weeks before I have to take the test. Maybe I'll travel, see the world and work my way through it all while waiting for my Philosophy course. :uhoh:

Beat the Dahli Lama in a discussion on Ethics and Morality
He beat me last few times but I won't give up that easily... Last time I managed to get him to conceed a couple points on human nature. Although none were of any major significance. :heh:

Other than that... I'd definitely want a job I enjoy doing, even if the pay isn't worth mentioning aloud. Life long learning is something I'll always persue, learn anything and everything I can. Maybe adopt a child, after all, kids deserve to grow up in something other than an orphanage or a foster home. As for what I'll do from there... I could always flip a coin. ;)

oh Slade, Slade you're always taking me literally :nono: *not a good idea* I wasn't really referring to what your actual life goals are, though that is quite revealing. I was thinking also about how each person chooses to answer that question. For example, you started off with jokes so we know you're an easy going, humorous person; some other people went straight into answering the question in-depth and all insightfully, which shows they're more serious and meticulous...Some people bragged quite a lot which shows... well you know.
That's what I was thinking of when I said that...Of course I'm the only one who'll do an automatic psychoanalysis of the posts *kills self* ... And I promise not to interfere with your world domination...world domination is always a good comic relief :) so have we come to understand each other?

You think I took you seriously! Egats! You're overestimating yourself(not in a bad way) and underestimating my sick/stupid sense of humor :D. Don't worry too much about analyzing everything you come across... I do that too, I'm a failed CS major(that just happens to tutor CS at the moment) who's now into psychology(going into med school for clinical psych).

Although at your age, you should be worrying more about what you should be wearing tomorrow, not what the hell these crazy bastards in some forum are thinking :heh:

Oh ya...never, ever, take me seriously unless I tell you never, ever, to take me seriously!! As long as you can understand that, we'll come to an agreement about each other and it will become proof that indeed, you are insane.

(pun intended, so sue me :heh: )

Slade you are... back to that original cuteness you once were! :) Wait you are the guy I had that *theoretical abyss* talk with, right??

PS: Sorry it's just not me to worry about what I'm wearing...I think I look cute either way and analyzing the crazy bastards is beyond my control believe it or not...It's become something I do unconsciously, God help me :help: :heh:

The usual goals...Finish my BME degree with an acceptable GPA...Try and get into med school...If that falls through...Graduate School and then Med School.
I think I would really like being a doctor and I'm willing to waste my life getting there.

Good luck to ya. It's tough to get in, I know, my brother and myself went through hell to get in. Some tips...

If your GPA isn't at least 3.5, you may have a tough time to get accepted at U.S. med schools. But you do have options:

1. Apply at the lowest tier US med schools. You'll have a better chance of getting in and save yourself some money. Application fees aren't cheap at all. Keep in mind, first two years of med school is basic sciences. So, just do well in class and pass your USMLE board exam, then transfer out to a better med school for your internship.

2. If you get rejected, don't get disappointed. Have you considered foreign country med schools that have ties to U.S. med schools? Schools like St. George in Grenada. They accept students as low as 2.5 GPA with 17 on MCAT (typically accept 2.8-3.2 GPA students with 25-30 MCAT). Once you complete your basic sciences, depending on the school, you may do your internship in U.S. or again, pass your board exam, and transfer to a US med school and do your internship in the US.

3. If that's not an option, there are other schools of medicine and health you may decide to enroll in.

There's school of dentistry (D.DS or D.MD) where you may decide to become a dentist or a surgeon of dentistry. Requirements to get in are almost identical to med school. Very competitive and you need a 3.5 GPA or higher. This may not be an option, but I'm listing it out because it's a common "safety" school for students applying for med school.

School of Optometry (O.D.). Become an eye doctor or eye surgeon. It's a 4yr program. Take the Optometry Admisions Test (OAT), have around 3.0-3.5 GPA, and you're in. You don't need a bachelor's degree to enroll.

School of Podietry (D.PM). Become a foot doctor or foot surgeon. Sorry, I know very little about this field.

If you want to practice medicine by dispensing medication, you may decide to go to School of Osteopathy (D.O.). They're similar to chiropractors except they believe in blood vessel and overall health impingment instead of nervous system impingment. Osteopaths also take an additional year for learning medicine and you have the choice (depending on which state you intend to practice in) similiar to a med student. Either become a general practioner (family doctor in your own clinic) or a specialist/surgeon. This too, since the end result in practice is similar to a M.D., is a common "safety" school for students applying for med school. Depending on which Osteopath school you apply to, it may or may not be difficult to enter.

Other two possible fields where you can dispense medication... you may become a nurse practioner (NP) or a physician assistant (PA). Nurse practioner requires enrollment in a nursing school to earn RN then additional schooling for NP. A Physician assistant is actually just an Associate Bach degree. 2yrs of schooling and you can assist a MD in hospitals. The catch with NP and PA's, you're not permitted to become primary care physicians, meaning, you must be under supervision of a M.D. or D.O. (you're not a doctor). There are exceptions to this rule, I'm not familiar with NP's, but with PA, you can be a primary care physician IF you are in a rural area in the middle of nowhere and no other MD/DO's nearby, and again, it also depends on what State you practice in. Some will allow rural area, some won't. Or, you can practice in a clinic where the MD/DO stops by like once a week to double check your work, and you assume as primary care physician role when the doc isn't there on the rest of the week. Again, it depends on which State permits it.

Another to think about is School of Chiropractic (D.C.). There are actually two divisions in this field. There is the straight chiropractic that follow the original teachings in a vitalistic and holistic approach, and there is the mixed chiropractic that follow the allopathic approach (medical based curriculum, without the vitalism approach). At the moment, they're not permitted to prescribe medication, but depending on which states, they generally are able to give physicial exams and provide treatment with physicial adjustments that realign muscles, ligaments, tendons, and bones without the usage of medication.

And last that I can think of... School of Traditional Oriental Medicine. This field is very new in U.S. About 30 years old or so. Depending on which states, you are either a Licensed Acupuncturist (L.Ac) or Doctor of Oriental Medicine (D.OM or OMD). It goes without saying, since it's so new, entering the school is a joke. You can practically enroll and be admitted on the same day, just hand over your application fee and recommendations. Staying in is a different matter. While the theory of treatment is different to western medicine, the plethora of oriental medical knowledge is insane and complex. The way I can sum it up, you're a family doctor and a pharmacist in one. Not today's pharmacist who just count out pills and put them in a container, I mean pharmacists 30-40 yrs ago or older who made the medicine compound by mixing several medical ingredients together. If you truly enjoy this field, the best way to learn is to go to China/Korea/Japan to complete your education. Just keep in mind, over there, Oriental Medicine program is just as equally tough to enter as Western medicine program over here.

Like any profession, it comes down to your "drive". If you have the motivate and the drive to succeed, then you'll have a successful practice. Any of these professions make $75k/yr, yes, even NP's and PA's. Those doctors with the "drive", typically make $200-300k/yr. Most successful ($1 million plus/yr) practice I've seen (excluding MD's) are DO's in specialized fields/outpatient clinics (plastic surgery) and DC's in Sports & Injury chiropractic clinics.

Feel free to ask any pointers... or better yet, open up your Yellow Pages, look for the field which interest you, call up that doctor, and be his/her shadow. Learn everything you can from the doc. If it doesn't interest you, move on to the next field.

Well, I have already accomplished a couple of things, which were to get a good job and a wonderful boyfriend with whom I have been with for nearly 4 months and am moving in with.

However, as there is always room for improvement -

1. I would like to buy myself a 180sx. My boyfriend has a Nissan Silvia and he wants to make it into a sil180 and I would then get the 1via. That's the master plan..

2. Enough money to buy a house and get out of the shitty town I live in.

3. Get an even MORE decent job than I have now.

4. Marry my bf and never have a divorce..

Silly but that's my 2 bob.

Remembered in history? I'm somewhat off the hook in that regard. All offsprings, their names and noted deeds, have been recorded in my family geneology texts from the very first ancestor, 44 generations ago. My father has a copy of the volumes. It's like an encyclopedia set, too numerous... last I've seen the volumes, it was about 40 volumes or so.

But in terms of being famous? That would be nice... A philanthropist would be one way to do it... I'd love to have a public building name after me in midtown/upper east or west in Manhattan like Carnegie Hall or Rockafellar Center.

Of lesser mention would be my ongoing quest to fight ignorance in it's many forms. ALthough, I've found that those in it's grasp are not that easy to free. >.>

Funny, I think about what I want to do and the future all the time, but never actually put it down in words. I've already done a lot that I wanted to do like getting married to my husband, traveling overseas and I have already found happiness. Things I still want to do include:

1) Finishing college
2) Get a job with high job security
3) Make enough money to be very finacially secure
4) Buy my dream home, or design one and have it built.
5) Learn! Just about anything I can get my hands on. (I'm a knowledge junkie.)
6) Find more meals to cook. (Making new things = fun)
Things I would like to do, but don't know if I ever will be able to:

1) Visit Japan (I actually have an opportunity to move there, but being close to my family is more important to me. So I will settle for a visit. ^_^)
2) Completely restore and rebuild a car. (I can just see me saying, "This goes..... :thinker: ...here?")
3) Get really good at shooting. (I need to go to the range more. >.<)
4) Buy a motorcycle
5) I would like to go golfing at least once...other than on the Xbox... :heh:
6) Snowskiing or boarding
7) Win the lottery and go on a huge anime shopping spree. (I guess that means I would have to buy a ticket...but, hey, a girl can dream right?)

But that's a dream not a goal. =PMost goals start off as dreams so stating that you would like to be able to go on an anime shopping spree isn't too far. People dreamt of discovering if the world was flat, so it became some of their goals to see if it was. Or someone had a dream to rule Asia, they decide to start an army to do it, it thus becomes a goal to rule Asia instead of a dream. See...closely related so it does tie in.

I think I will leave it here and continue in another new thread, cos it seems that I will be of a wet blanket to the striving few. (Dark cloud over my head.... ) :uhoh:

I do not see the point in striving for anything what will it ultimately accomplish in the world. Lets say I wanted to become a Software developer, what will that mean to the rest of the world , are we just born to go to school then go to work thn die at the end of it all what is the point ?

I think that sounded suicidal but that is how I feel but my goal would probably be right now to get the hell out of Florida and return to Trinidad as soon as I am done with school here. Then after that I have no plan.

You know, this is another case of a thread I ignored because I thought nothing good would come of it... goddamn I hate when I'm wrong. >_<

I actually admire some of the goals listed in the pages of this thread. ^_^

John Wayne Gacy was the one who killed thirty-three little boys and stored the remains under his house.

Hey now! He may have entertained children as a clown, but he didn't go after those ones. He was gay, not a pedophile.

As for my goal in life. I plan to publish many books until my health starts getting in the way. Then before I die, I'll kill myself in a terrifying and grousome manner. In a will, I'll leave my right hand and skull case to my best friends. With that getting people's attention, people will read the books I've written and I wont have to worry about people bitching to me about shit I don't care about. ^_^

You worship wealthiness over something more important here I'ld say. The true wealthiness lies in happiness, no? I mean it doesn't matter how rich you are as long as you're happy. There are many people who are rich, yet not happy. So one cannot apply the rule that wealthiness leads to happiness per se.

I don't have any specific goals that I've decided to dedicate my life in order to reach, but right now I have some things I'm trying to acomplish:

* Deciding whether I should study at a university or not. And if I decide to study, what program?
* Finding a new girlfriend (and I'm.... not very good at stuff like that, sadly. >_>)
* I need to start going to a gym or something... Need to build some muscles again :p

1.) Think of a good business plan to make money quick.
2.) Start a company
3.) Keep my day job as I am doing 1.) and 2.)
4.) Keep said company as a family conglomerate, prevent it from going public into the control of shareholders. Take total monopolistic control of the market.
5.) Cut costs through deflated wages, but keep employees happy by subjecting them to mindless entertainment.
6.) Keep my females and offspring and respective clans from warring with each other while I am doing 4.) and 5.)
7.) If I can gain the equivalent profit as doing 1.) through 6.) without even bothering to set up a company, or even pay taxes, so much the better.

Very high goals are sometimes overbearing...especially ones which are forced upon you by parents.... I just hope I can make everyone happy and live a successful and a complete life.

I know some may have goals to be the best, I think that's admirable, setting high goals and aiming for them, gives you the best oppertunity to achieve your dreams and goals. I on the other hand, just want to be able to get a job, get a decent wage, live life in a healthy-ish fashion and just...be happy. :)

Oh almost everyone's goals are so commonplace. Come on guys, I'd like to hear more unique ones you'd like to do. I'm sure you guys have some more interesting goals that you've set for yourself (such as 0ink's - Walking to China, or Mr_Paper's - Beating Dahli Lama in a discussion on Ethics and Morality). But before I give my list, let me define what a "goal in life" is. A goal in life to me is like something I would really want to do but not necessarily need to do. The reward of accomplishing it would simply bring more satisfaction in my life. It's not quite as grand as a dream. The goals in my life materializes and vanish as time and my experiences progress. These are some of my quirkier goals that I currently have and not yet expired:
To play Leo Kottke's Crow River Waltz with my twelve string guitar in person for a couple (a man and a woman) in love as they waltz to it with sincere feelings. I want to experience that peculiar warm joy of providing an emotive peice of music that I love for a couple to appreciate to.
To meet a female version of myself. In other words, someone with the exact same non-physical traits (personality, intelligence, mentality, spirituality...etc) as me, but just physically female. And contest with her in various things and abilities, such as burping (I love burping, and constantly improving my volume), how long can one spin a basketball (my personal record: over 30 minutes)...etc. Theoretically, I doubt we'll get along. There are some negatives of myself that I would hate if a girl possesses them. Would be an interesting meet to satisfy my curiosity nonetheless.
To have sex in space, in zero gravity. Imagine the possibilities. And when someone asks "Where's the craziest place you've had sex at?" I can say I did it 500Km above the Earth. How about that eh?
To persuade my imaginary childhood friend, Jeremiah Kingsworth, to wear something other than that old Victorian style back suit he always seems to have on. He is intelligent and wise but he can be so stubborn at times, and this is one of those times. I think he'll look snappy with Hawaiian shirt and grey shorts but he keeps saying otherwise. I'd like to beat him more often in games too.
To catch a fired bullet uninjured, somehow. I have heard of stories where in WWII paratroopers in airplanes would see bullets just hovering outside beside them, and they would just grab it with their bare hands. I bet it'll feel strangely cool and satisfying to do so.

My intention is to find a job in Human Resources after my graduation this year (in Aug) since I majored in HR. Thereafter I will consider doing my Masters in about 3 to 4 yrs time before going back to my college to be a lecturer. I have always wanted to teach coz I was deeply inspired by many teachers during my high school & college days. However, I was told that working experience in the corporate world is required in order to apply for the job as a lecturer, thus I'll have to spend some years working first + saving for my part time education.

My goal in life without specification would have to be to strive for justice and equality for everyone in this world, in everyway I possibly can. (I know I'm probably never going to have a lot of money, so my means are limited. But people can be influenced in so many ways).
I would also like to write at least one graphic novel in my life.

Does anyone here want to be remembered in history?

I do. But how?

The toughest one, I'd say. It's driven people to become serial killers. I'd say: do the one thing you get the most pleasure in (and watching anime day and night doesn't count, I'm talking about actual work here), and push yourself to the max at it. Maybe it'll work out, maybe it wont. But sometimes if you find something you really like doing, and if you can get satisfied with yourself at how you do it, your purpose in life will be fulfilled, and making history will matter less and less.

My goals for the future
-live an unfulfilling life
-have abusive/one-sided relationships
-die a painful and tragic death

Be famous posthumously!!! (just wait, itll happen)
Lol...most wonderful goals, if painful.

For the argument that things such as "I want to go to a good school...get married, etc" are not goals that will bring happiness...or are not valid things to strive for and thus are shallow, society induced reasons for living....Well, you're right, they're just that, but if someone wants to have a "good" (by good I'm leaning towards a luxurious life), then they're more than welcome. I've known the difference between an ivy league and a mediocre state college, and there is a world of difference, not just in the enthusiasm and knowledge of the professors, but also in the attitude of the students with whom you spend time with. I've had no money, and rode in the bus with homeless people 4-6 hours a day, and I've also had a lexus of my own. A life of luxury is less stressful, and less painful, and if you were a normal person like me, you would prefer it.

I read somewhere that the happiest memory people had was of conquering a challenge that they thought was excruciatingly difficult for them, but through work and motivation they did as they had dreamt.

And Mr. Paper: WOW you've mean the Lama?! WOW. Wow. Seriously. Can I have his number, plz?

I would say happiness but that's really vague.

To be more specific, I aim to gain these things in order to attain happiness:

-Get a decent job in the industry I majored in and enjoyed doing.
-Stay healthy.
-Be with my family till the end.
-Meet my fated partner? (maybe)
-Be able to witness an event that will change mankind. (First contact with real aliens etc etc)
-Die of old age.

We may have a large list of aims, but sometimes we just take a completly different road from the one we planned...

anyway my goals in life as far as "my 21 years old brain is concerned" are:

1-Become a writer

2-Teach literature in Korea or Japan

3-Become very good at yoga

4-Travel to countries having ruins of great civilization (Maya ,Pyramids,Temples...)

5-Share all this and much more with THE PERSON for me.

Thanks all and hope your dreams come true one day.

Everyone should have at least some goals in life. If not then what are they supposed to be here for?

Well let's see my goals:

No matter what I do, my goal is to have fun in life.

I'm annoyingly like Haruhi in that I get bored easily, which causes me to be grumpy and bothersome to others.. But I do know how to make my own fun (even if it is at the expense of others sometimes :) ).
