I am looking for anime with an intelligent/strong lead character. He does not have to be powerful, although intelligence and power go hand to hand in the animes I have found. The genre is not important. It may be supernatural, historical or even sports.

Character development is not a must. I like character interaction more. If the lead character is not coward or stupid, I like character development also.

I know there are similar threats, but they are not exactly describing what I want, so please bear with it.

The animes that fit most into this concept and I like most are:

Hey Marcus Julius you could check out Black Lagoon its a bit of John Woo/Chow Yun Fat action going on but the main character Rock fits you description. he is a Japanese salaryman who gets taken hostage by a mercenary shipping company his company leaves him for dead so he joins the mercenary team. Rock doesn't fight with the team but generally acts as a negotiator between the team and others and the team itself

throughout the series its got some good character development on all sides as Rock battles with his inner conflicts about fighting and the wrongs that are happening all around him plus the moral shortcomings that he sees in his team but in particular Revy who starts developing feelings for Rock and vice versa. the reason for this is that until Rock turned up Revy had no problem doing what she does (kill people and she does it very well) but since Rock has joined the team he makes her feel guilty about what she does.

its a great series with a good storlyline, and solid character

Lol I remember watching a unknown raw 1-2 years ago of a non-hentai anime where the gag of the main character who is a he, is where a gay dog feel in love with him and sometimes tries too anal rape him when ever he gets the chance :O I remember the first dog attempt succeeded :O

Just don't watch Chaos;Head... The main guy is very un-likeable (even though not particularly stupid...).

I would suggest Rurouni Kenshin (although the main character is very strong, he tries to win by changing his opponent's mind instead of using physical strength) and Monster.

Since you are checking out Kaiji, also watch Akagi. The main character's intelligence is more constant than Kaiji's flashes of brilliance, though both are awesome. One Outs is also similar to Akagi. And thirding Master Keaton.

I recommend these two since they're the only ones I can think of : Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro. About supernatural stuff, murder, myths, detective, stuff like that also kinda gory too. Here is another simiar anime series though not as gory: Matantei Loki Ragnarok. MmmZ also about supernatural stuff and detective work and has some romance I guess... Well I think these two series are unique maybe rare too, hoped this helped =]
