My tolerance for "gilded cage possessive" behavior vanished during the Kannagi incident and the halting of that series... calling tolerance for that behavior "elite" is a very strange misuse of the word.

The odds are there won't be any deep relationships simply because the story is focused on their musical aspirations and daily moments. Its still the case in Japan that a relationship or marriage often ends a music/acting career... (they "retire" to be a housewife). And of the bunch... I can only visualize Ritsu as challenging that paradigm.

and about the new character names:
A Note on New Characters
As you probably know, majority of the Japanese first and last names are written in kanji and most of those have more than one reading. Generally speaking, there is no way to tell for certain how a particular name is read just by looking at its kanji. For that reason, names on business cards and such usually include their proper readings to prevent confusion. In manga, when new characters are introduced it is customary for mangaka to provide readings for their names as well.

So, the first chapter of the restarted manga introduces 3 new characters and Kakifly-sensei was kind enough to provide the readings for their first names: Ayame, Sachi, and Akira. Unfortunately, their last names came without readings. Last names I used in my translation are supposedly the "most common"/"most likely" readings that I found in relevant threads on Japanese boards, but they are not official and can change at some point down the road. Recent example of that is Sogabe changing to Sokabe after it was said in the anime (reading for Megumi's last name was not provided in the manga).

For the curious, Ayame's last name (吉田) has at least 7 readings, Sachi's last name (林) has at least 15 readings, and Akira's last name (和田) has at least 5 readings.

So, it's best to call them Sachi, Ayame, and Akira, for now.

One new character. Don't know if more will be introduced.

- New character apparently looks like a foreigner(blond hair, blue eyes), but has a Japanese name and can't speak English. Looks like Mugi without the eyebrows, but personality is closer to Mio. But she, like Mugi, also can make tea.
- Could've been a new member, until Sawa-chan scared her away with her perversion. It seems like she belongs to another club anyway so it doesn't look like she'll join. Not without some blackma- I mean, persuasion.

Edit: On a closer look, the new character actually resembles Tachibana Himeko from the anime.

There seems to be an EXTREMELY ugly double standard at work here. :(

In spite of the fact that Toriyama Akira and Watsuki Nobuhiro let Son Goku and Himura Kenshin get married so they can (shock and horror!!) have sex and have adorable little children, they never got a singlular solitary death threat from fucked up fangirls who grew up squeeing over them. Both these sweet nice guys are STILL loyally loved romantically by fangirls in spite of the fact they are OBVIOUSLY no longer virgins.

Might want to read Yoko Oh No (http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/YokoOhNo) and reconsider your opinion.

Women appreciates the "player" type of men. If a man can make any woman his, it only makes a women feels her existence greatly validated when that man date or marry her. (That's not a healthy mindset, no.) On the other hand, men don't appreciate the "slut" type of women. A man feels his existence greatly invalidated if his woman acknowledge that there is a man other than him. Or worse, if the woman actually have sex with that other man/those other men.

The ones who sent "death threats" have the mindset of a man providing for his harem of women. He (or she, who knows) does spend money to spend quality times with them, after all. So it's only understandable that they are incensed by the thought of the girls having boyfriends. That's high treason.

The K-on! girls are just products (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitalism), why do anyone so mad about consumers complaining? Sure, sending death threats is illegal, but it's ridiculous to dictate what others should and shouldn't do about the goods they legally procure. I'm okay with people believing that their copy of The Bible they bought in the bookstore tell them of how to achieve eschatological salvation. Even if I can't agree with the contents of The Bible (http://www.boston.com/bostonglobe/ideas/articles/2009/03/08/dark_passages/), I can't tell them to quit their intense adoration of the Christian God.

Also, dang it, initially I thought your post was about Son Goku x Himura Kenshin. :heh:

And Sawako's method of telling the Hirasawa sisters apart never fails. The others should take note of that. XD

Either way, a nice start of the side-story. The new girl could be interesting, assuming she indeed does come back.

Well, I believe she has plenty of them at home :D and besides, the tea time is one of the defining characteristics of the club anyway. It's a good legacy :D

and Sumire looks cute :) but somehow I think that the tea-serving role shouldn't be given to her (assuming that she'll be joining the club) since Ui could do that (I personally see her having Yui's appearance and abilities and also Mugi's caring personality).

Regarding the instrument.. (Again, assuming she'll be the new member), I think she might play the guitar or something else. Drums, while still possible, I think it doesn't suit her :p. Also, looking from her status as a freshman (blue ribbon), I assume that there might be another freshman who would play the drums for the club. Might be another tomboy like Ritsu :D

Well, this is purely my speculation :p

Azsusa more or less had made her own roll for herself.
Jun seems to fill in the Ritsu roll
Ui could be a Yui roll, but Ui is dependable and thus more like Mugi.

That leaves a Yui roll and a Mio roll (instead of having Azusa as the Mio roll that she doesn't fit in as an upperclassmen).

I woinder if she is Mugi's illegitimate half sister (mother's side of the family since Mugi's eyebrows are obviously from her father's side of the family)

Guess we will have to wait another month or so to find out anything else

In Kakifly's tradition of naming characters based off bands(the main 5 girls from P-Model, the side characters from The Pillows), it seems the new college girls' surname(and if you're Kanji savvy, part of their given-name) are from these guys.

The problem is that Kakifly doesn't even try changing the group dynamics. In case of Sumire, she can be described precisely as looking like Mugi, acting like Mio, and is supposed to play like Ritsu. I know that today isn't the time for experimental anime (LOL Fractale), but this is starting to make the audience feel like they are being taken for fools (which may or may not be a truth).

Now that you mention it... I also see that Azusa, Ui, and Jun's situation resembled their seniors, where the first members of the club is Ritsu, Mio, and Mugi. And we can easily say that Azusa -> Mio, Ui -> Mugi, and Jun -> Ritsu.

If that's the case, Sumire might fill the airhead role :D (I mean, there's no way she could steal the cupboard by dragging that all by herself, right? XD)

It's a bit weird that for three years, nobody ever questions Mugi's heritage, yet when Sumire comes along, everybody assumes she's a foreigner and therefore only speaks English. I do like the idea of her being related to Mugi's butler though. Perhaps Mugi purposely left the tea sets behind as a gift to the new LMC?

And I have to say, I find the fact that Azusa was trying to copy Mio adorable. :D

The speculation is that Mugi is half-Finnish, half-Japanese and raised as Japanese. Whereas Ana Coppola *cough* Sumire apparently looks/acts different enough to raise questions.

Yeah.... it does look a bit too familiar...

I guess the main reason Mugi's heritage was never really questioned (at least by the other HTT members) was because she spoke Japanese when she was first introduced...
(and Sumire was introduced trying to steal a cupboard)

Well Mugi did speak first before Ritsu and Mio saw her, so they would have no reason to assume anything. Also this second meeting was with Azusa, Jun, and Ui...who all met Mugi after she was part of the Light Music Club, thus having no reason to assume anything...well, at least not having to assume she only spoke English. They speculate a bit about Mugi as it is since they've never been to her main house and Mugi makes efforts to not flaunt her money. Azusa and Ui knows Mugi has a butler for instance (Ritsu knows this as well, having spoken to him over the phone).

Didn't know the new manga was already available, but new chapters were a lot of fun to read!

Wonder about the layout of their dorm though - assuming the girls were in the common room that night based on how the new characters just popped into the area, I guess they're not in a suite but single rooms? I was hoping they'd be in a four-bedroom suite though... :D

Sokabe living so close to Mio is :D, and Yui already has a nickname for her? Well, it's not surprising.

We will see how these two parallel groups series go. Remember Azusa's group only has one year od High School left, so Ui, Azusa, and Jun will be doing all those tests and college entrance exams like the first group did. Sumire, if she joins, may not have quite the attachment that Azusa had with Yui's group, so that reaction might not be in place. Also I don't know if Sumire will be the only new member of the Light Music Club...because unless she gets potental future members during this one year, she will be alone next year and probably not gained a large enough fanbase to continue the series at the high school level (propetual manga...same settting, new students).

Yui, Mio, Ritsu, and Mugi have a much larger field to play in since they are in college, which is generally a four year institution, but can go on longer depending on majors and if one goes for other degrees. Also on how many units you take...five years is not uncommon. What remains to be seen is not only what happens in that Light Music Club (lots of members it seems), but also were Ui, Jun, and especially Azusa decide to go for college. Will they all try to follow Yui and Mio, or will they go their seperate ways and have the manga just follow the original group after Azusa finishes high school?

(Ui will probably want to follow her sister. Jun might try to follow Mio, and Azusa's personality seems to not want to be left alone.)

I wonder how Kakifly will pace this school year. A quick lookback reveals that the first year took up around 14 chapters, the second 20, and the third 23. Hopefully there's no need to rush, especially since there are two separate storylines.

That tallies with my own guess that it'll take at least 24 chapters of material before there's enough to animate a new season. The results probably won't be good if they did it with only 12 chapters and worse, a 2-cour season.
If Kyoto does animate another season of K-On, it will truly be the series with the most material animated by the company.

But we might get some hints from the movie.

I like how the correspondence between Yui and Azusa is used to (kind of) tie the two chapters together. Nice touch, Kakifly. :)
Aye, it makes little sense... Jun is a major fangirl for bassist Mio, something terrible would have to happen for her to drop bass for guitar. I've not seen the strips in question and I wonder if there's a translation issue on implicit meaning of what she says.

I believe that it was mentioned that Jun played the bass in the manga as well...
Yup, around volume 4, chapter 9.

I don't think she's being too serious (teasing Azusa maybe?).
That would be the most logical explanation, Jun does have the tendency to tease Azusa a few times.

It could be Jun's way of saying she wants to be in the center of the spotlight, unlike Mio, who wanted to stay as far away from it as possible. Assuming Jun doesn't do any backing vocals, hardly anyone would notice her on bass. If she were to play the guitar as well, she'd be on the forefront more and would thus probably get more recognition.

Most likely it'll be Azusa (although IMO if the anime will also continue~ Ayana's voice isn't really suitable for singing), but I think it'll be interesting if it'll be Jun or Sumire instead (Ui is unlikely, based on her instrument, but I do like her voice best among the trio)

If Ui were to play a keytar, she could play and sing at the same time. I would probably prefer Jun, as I liked her character song, though I don't know what Sumire would sound like, assuming she indeed joins the new LMC. But, if they go for a singer who's always up front, either Azusa or Jun would probably fill in that part.

Mio, Yui, Ritsu, and Mugi, all at college. At least 5 new characters have been introduced. However their roll in the overall picture is now clear yet. (only 2 chapters of this group is out currently)

Azusa, Ui, and Jun (with Sawako-sensei), still in high school. Only one new character has been introduced into this group and we aren't sure what her roll is yet. (only one chapter of this group is out currently)

Third Season will be a ways off. Even at two manga chapers a month, it will take a little while to build up enough to make a good run for the two groups. No clue what KyoAni would do to keep the two groups' stories apart within a single season, nor if either group will be more popular than the other since it is way, way to early to tell.

As far as I know, it's just the publication that is divided, but the manga itself is still 1.
Come to think of it, if it will truly be only 1 manga (college + HS) then it could mean it'll be faster to finish.

Normally, mangaka would work 1 chapter per month (for the monthly publication of course), but Kakifly did 2 chapter per month.

As for the tv adaptation, they don't need to wait the manga to be finished to start a season, do they? :D

of course, the first season of the anime was made just after 1 (or 2?) volume of the manga, and they only got 13 episodes.

I also don't want the 3rd season (if there'll be any) to start so soon. Even the movie is too early for me :heh: And just like what Sparvid said, I also think that the movie should be released in BD and DVD first (which means around the end of 2012), and maybe KyoAni will have another project going on too~

What I implied in my post before is just that it seems the manga would be done faster by doing the 2 chapters per month (considering it'll be around 4 volume like the 1st one). Otherwise, there's a possibility that the story will be longer too (more volumes, but done in 2 chapters to shorten the time) and the college years is > 3 years too :D

While we don't really see teachers get involved in college/uni clubs I do actually hope to see a male involved with the girls, I think it would add a nice spin to the series but then it's always been about the girls.

It's a hard place to be in...

Still can't wait to see more of Sumire, as I said to the KiNA-mon, so far at least shes the best both Mio and Mugi-chan. Mio's shy/scaredy cat and Mugi-chan's looks and tea making abilities.

Aside from the even more background parents of the other girls.

We'll have to sit through the movie first and foremost. By the time that is released on Blu-Ray, we're looking at mid-2012 before KyoAni could decide to make a third season.

I too think it's only a matter of time, but they also don't want to hasten it, because otherwise, it won't last long enough to be remembered. So, late 2012/early 2013 is when I would expect a third season.

As for how they'd adapt the manga, I'm pretty sure the manga will be bundled into one once all the chapters for this volume have been released, so it would make sense if they did that with the anime as well.

Of course, first, we'll have to see if we'll ever get a third season.

Also interesting is that so far (granted it's only been 2 issues) the manga has been Mio & Ritsu centric, which makes sense because with all the girls living together the most dynamic ones are likely to be pushed to the front.

Interesting developments here.

So, Sumire is indeed related to Mugi's butler and was instructed by Mugi to take home the tea sets. Now that that backfired, goal #2 is obviously sticking around with Azusa and co to keep an eye on Mugi's former friends.

I'm curious as to what the new lineup is going to, though. Jun and Azusa are pretty much given (assuming the former was joking about picking up guitars). I expect Sumire to take after her mistress and pick up the keyboards. And I wouldn't be surprised at all if the new kid has a knack for drumming, though it might be hidden as a latent talent, just how Yui had talent for guitar-playing. As for Ui, the only possible role I can see her take is that of main vocalist, with or without an instrument of her own.

And I like how Azusa now has no valid reason to scold Yui (or anyone else) anymore for singing off-key, because she can't sing and play guitar at the same time either. Karma's a bitch, isn't it, Azusa? ;)

Well that and it was Ritsu and Mio that met Mugi first. By the time the others meet Mugi she's been in the Light Music club for a while (Yui joined later and Azusa just sees them as senior to her. Ui sees her as one of Yui's friends and Jun sees them later as well).

But then Mugi was still a mystery to them all. Also the one that happened to have money. It is telling when Ritsu calls Mugi's house and gets her butler instead, finding out Mugi is in Finland. Ritsu and Azusa have rather interesting reactions to that informtion. Ui I don't recall reacting all that much.

That's what I thought too. I felt that Kakifly's approach is a bit different now.

Now that almost everyone loves Sumire, I hope that he won't forget to balance the focus of the characters. Azusa is always some kind of the 2nd protagonist of the story thanks to her status as a younger member of HTT and now she got her own band. Sumire and Okuda easily gets attention since they're new characters. It's Ui and Jun who never really had a chance to shine.

Same thing happened to Mugi. She is the least focused on the story, least popular among the 4, moreover when Azusa was introduced, she was overshadowed instantly.

Well, I know it's too early to tell, but that's the impression I got so far. Hopefully, the upcoming stories will have more varied focus :)

I'm really pleased with the new keionbu lineup actually, I was pleasantly surprised that they managed to get two new members in the space of 8 pages, one of which appeared less than five times I think.
I like both members, it's about time they had someone with glasses in a band! I was musing about what instruments they will play but whatever they do I'm sure it will be entertaining as most likely they are learning from scratch.

Both Yui and Akira are going for an education degree. Which I guess suits Yui, since being a teacher is the only profession she ever considered seriously, both in the manga and anime.

Mio goes to the same lectures as Sacchi, while Ritsu studies with Ayame.

We learn more about Sacchi this time around. A calm, nice girl who has a complex about her height. Sacchi played the bass for 2 years.

Mio's college attire is lovely.

I dunno... her speaking "un-Mugi like" is kind of the point, don't you think? I might agree they're taking it a bit too far, but it's not something I'd consider boycotting the manga for.

It would except that using that would shift it "out of the country", since is one imagines Japan as the United States, Using King's English would be like using...oh, some Chinese I guess. In terms of relative distance rather than language itself. Most translators would try to keep it in the country, even if the language can cross oceans (such as if they tried to pull off someone from say Okanawa as speaking Australian).

Since the closest to King's English in the United States (in terms of pompus sounding if put on thick, think "Gone with the Wind") is either Southern, or New England...most choose Southern, since New England is hard to show in text.

Brooklyn is used because it is easy to see in text form and there are a lot...a whole lot of people that will understand it as an accent in text form. Basically to get the point across that the speech is different, but not a completely different language...without making it look like Shakespeare...because that is what most people thing of when they see King's English.

Whilst I'm not surprised the club requires an admission fee... 20 000 yen for a year?! Even at the university I go to, clubs probably don't charge more than $10! (Well, they do go to a large private university, but still...)
I'm also curious as to whether the fee is per person or per band. And we can probably count on Mugi to cover the costs (hopefully).

First I will confess that I didn't think much fo Akira to begin with, other than she was just her and nothing special but she's growing on me now.
Seems her being stuck with Yui is helping in that matter.

Mio stole the chapter for me just cause of the simple fact she had her hair u tied up.
It's that thing where you see a person with long hair down all the time and then they tie it up nicely that makes you think "whoa~" this would one of those times.
Plus it also goes toward my little thing for slow-mo-letting-their-hair-down thing:heh:

That and Mio was a hoot to see this chapter:p

and the thing with Hayashi's height complex was cute, her and Mio are kinda like peas outta same pod:heh:

Btw I don't quite see Mugi-chan dealing with the fees herself, this is most likely gonna be a group effort and we'll probably see the band do something to raise the money themselves.

I have to side with you a bit on that one. The membership fees of the clubs from the university I used to attend charged ranged between $20 (for the photography club) and $100 (for the yacht club) annually. I suppose the only reason why University Light Music Club was charging such exorbitant fees was to pay for rent, and to throw a huge concert for their 10 bands sometime in the year.

Being a teacher will overload your brain. There's just too many things to think about, having to plan for your classes. And then there's all that paperwork: If you think doing homework was bad, then consider having to mark 150 of them to fill your weekend. Believe me, dealing with the unruly kids is the easy part.

If Yui chooses to become a high school teacher, she will definitely be in for a shock. But I have to admit I have no idea what being a kindergarten teacher entails, though.

This could also be part of a funding problem. Even if all members did pay up, it would bring in only $8,000, definitely not enough to have 10 bands do concerts or go on MTs. The deficit would probably be made up by the student council, but there is a limit to what money can be received.

You know, all this reminds me of when I was at the Komabasai. Probably the only fun thing from my time at Todai.

This has been discussed before... and we thought that it's very possible :D there's even a news about the continued manga on the official site's blog. But if that were to happen, most likely it won't be out at least around 2012 or 2013. Depends on the projects of KyoAni (they tend to focus at 1 series at a time).

We will have to wait and see. There is a movie coming out in December, so the manga has at least six more months to generate material before then, and if Kyoto Animation follows the pattern from before, K-On!!! would be in April, so a year's worth of the restarted manga until then. At two a month, that's 24 chapters (12 for each of the High School and College Years). That might be enough for at least a 13 episode season...and the manga will continue to be produced during that time...so At least six more months of material possible before the end of a 26 episode run. So at least 18 chapters of both by the end of a theoretical K-On!!! at the end of the Summer 2012 season in October.

If they mixed the content (alternating the episode focus) they might have enough material to pull it off. Otherwise they would have only enough material for a 13 episode show by the end of the Spring 2012 season. At this point we get into speculation about how long the High School part will last...since it seems to focus on Azusa's last year of High School. If this is the case, than it can only go on for so long. After that point it would likely be entirely focused on College (assuming Azusa joins the rest after she graduates). However, if there id enough call for it, the manga might follow the two new Light Music Club members in the High School as they attempt to continue the Light Music Club in their next two years of school....at which point you have a manga that can possibly continue forever as the focus will be "The Light Music Club" of that high school, while the other manga follows the original group through college and/or their professional career as a band.

Logic suggests that the manga will only follow the orignal four and Azusa rather than stay at the High School forever while adding new characters each year or two to make sure the Light Music Club (and its traditions) set up by President Ritsu's group stay around fior years to come. That would get overly complicated as people age out they newer members won't know anyone directly from the first group...and thus the traditions (and the free flowing tea and cake via Mugi) will slowly disappear. That and the fanbase would have to form some serious attachments to the new girls coming in for this to happen. Surmire might get such a fanbase, but Okuda is a mystery at this point.

Since the anime is based on the manga, both. The current manga is running two chapters a month. One at the start of the month for the college years (Ritsu, Mio, Mugi, and Yui), and one at the end of the month for the high school years (Azusa, Ui, and Jun).

The question will be how long Azusa's part will be? The College group can go on for years. And when Azusa's part endd, will the manga return to one chapter a month, or stay at two?

The second question would be if KyoAni is told to animate K-On!!! after they movie is finished. And what would they animate first...Azusa's part, or Yui's part? Or both at the same time?

I'm quite positive that won't happen :D K-ON! has special place in the hearts of their fans.

There are many hit animes airing after K-ON! (Madoka, for example) but K-ON! is still hot as ever :D (at least in some places I've visited regularly).

It is one thing to do more Haruhi (which will sell) or more FMP (which might not) and it is another thing to make a new show that may or may not sell well (Nichijou might not be all that successful, but it is amusing).

K-On will (like Haruhi) sell, but in addition to this they will get massive numbers of CD singles and album sales in addition to te normal DVD/BR sales and sales of figures and the like. It is the music that is like printing money on top of making money they got from DVD sales. This in turn I assume as boosted the manga sales to the point where it was restarted, not just in one, but in two magazines.

I'm hoping for more on the new girls when Azusa's part comes out in the next week or two. Then maybe something for Mugi to do in college a few weeks after that.

I'm quite positive that won't happen :D K-ON! has special place in the hearts of their fans.

There are many hit animes airing after K-ON! (Madoka, for example) but K-ON! is still hot as ever :D (at least in some places I've visited regularly).

I doubt that; the rest of the classmates have already graduated and moved on with their lives. Probably the most likely person to return to school for some reason (aside from Yui) would be Nobuyo delivering sake to Sawa-chan-sensei.

And for the anime characters still in high school, there's the new student council president, and the teacher that Kyoto Animation genderbent from the manga.

but well, despite her learning skills, if she's going to pick the keyboard / organ, then it seems she won't be on the vocals.

The situation is similar to Mugi's. Remember that back when Fuwa-Fuwa Time lyrics were written, she was also asked to be the vocalist by Ritsu, but she said that her hands will be full on the keyboard (Although we know she's the best candidate since she initially wanted to join the choir club). But of course we also know that it's not impossible for the keyboardist to be the vocalist. (After all, she sang Honey Sweet Tea Time).

Just my thought. :)

Well, Jun playing guitar is pretty much out of the question now. I know the two instruments are different, but I was under the impression that if you could play bass guitar, you could play 'regular' guitar as well. Can someone with actual musical experience tell me more about that?

Anyway, I'm guessing Sumire's true identity will eventually be revealed, if it's only because she tried too hard to hide it and may be thinking too much of her 'predicament' than she should.

Gotta feel sorry for the store clerk, who Ui now pretty much gave a heart attack. I guess Yui's antics gave him a life-long trauma. Also liked how she had the exact same thoughts about that specific guitar as Yui once did.

And the more I'm thinking about all this, the more I think the new girl will be the new vocalist. After all, we've seen what she can't do, but not what she can do. By comparison, Yui proved that, despite her lack of musical talent, she had a good singing voice from the get-go.

Well looks like Sumire-chwan is now my 2nd favorite character of the series.

I'm sorry Mio but you've been demoted to 3rd place(never thought this would ever happen....ever)

I gotta admit new K-ON is actually pretty funny to see, Sumire is a given but the rest are really coming into their own.
The new dynamic of the club still feels K-ON-ish but I guess refreshing/different in way.
Props to author there.

The music store scene was great, totally loled@ at Ui being Yui. Poor store clerk has had it tough for 3 years and looks like it will continue for another couple:heh:

Didn't expect Sumire to play drums, rather plseant surprise I guess. Now I'm hoping Okuda plays something else besides keyboard, would be nice to see a different instrument in teh band. Maybe a wind instrument.
