K-On! (けいおん! ,Keion!) is a Japanese four-panel comic strip manga written and illustrated by Kakifly. The manga started serialization in Houbunsha's seinen manga magazine Manga Time Kirara since the May 2007 issue, and also started a bimonthly serialization in Houbunsha's magazine Manga Time Kirara Carat since the October 2008 issue. An anime adaptation produced by Kyoto Animation will begin airing in Japan on April 3, 2009. The title of the series comes from the Japanese word for light music, keiongaku (軽音楽).

From chapters that I've seen, I think the soft music club should rather be renamed as the cosplay club. Nurse cosplay spotted! I think they also did Maid before.
Believe me, there is no yuri in K-On!.(<---lie)

I've always thought that the 'light music' club should be labelled the 'light snack' club.
Mugi and Sawa-chan make a good 'yum yum Mio' combo
Nakano Azusa is the fifth member of the club and joins as a freshman (the others by that time are in their second years/sophomores). Long-haired twintails girl that seems to like cat's ears. Azusa's a guitar player and was so impressed by Yui's performance in the cultural festival that she joins the club. She's later impressed by Mio's maturity and respects her as a sempai. She plays with a Fender Mustang and she acts as a 'competitor' for Yui's guitar spot on the band.

In Vol2 of the manga.... There's a particular where Yui is sleeping in bed and her sister goes look at her and then goes away. Later on, the group was playing and then everyone saw Yui. A few moments later, her sister appeared out of nowhere in the clubroom. Later on, Yui is in bed - I think sick. What's going on here?

Student Council. Which becomes important when they need help, as will probably be shown in the next episode of the Anime as well.
I can't bet that it will be major changes from the manga, most of all, from the "music side", because in a manga you can't develop that aspect. But in an Anime who is made by Kyo Ani and the chance to make zillions of CDs and actually live concerts ala Haruhi... i expect an EPIC episode at the first show... similar to the one in Haruhi or LS (the cheerleading thing).
BTW, did you notice Mugi cosplaying the universally famous "Haruhi Bunny Suit"?, that was awesome.

Always wondered who'd be in the Mio fan club. Other than about half of this forum.
Ritsu has the right idea in charging the Mio club for band funds though ;p
EDIT: The Fangirl's name is Megumi, and she's the Student Council President! And Mio-chan Fanclub President too! Another small thing we find at the end of the chapter is that Nodoka's going to be the next Council Pres (how about the elections? ;p) so that'll be interesting.

Nah... 4koma is 4koma after all... as i said it before, Kyo Ani is putting a lot of steroids in the plot to make K-On the show that it is.

I beg to differ. For Lucky Star, the charm of the anime is the strips coming to life, with voice acting and music. The ton of Haruhi references can be irritating. Later in the manga, you tend to appreciate the lack of product placements.
In K-On's case, there is simply not enough volumes to tell the story. We have like what? 2 volumes at the most?
The 2nd volume was released in February.
I don't image there will be more than three volumes..maybe four if they stall their third year and the end of their second year....or replace the original four with newbies. (or Yui has to repeat).
Well, i think that Ritsu and Mio's promise (and goal) for the band it's the more logical end.

this manga is rather good considering its 4koma format. lol i never expected yui to be such a smart idiot. i hope they dont delay azunyan's appearance in the anime too much.

nice, looks like the k-on bug is contagious :D. this is the only 4koma manga that im hooked on. usually the only 4koma i read are the joke 4koma.
@xactual: i feel that azunyan will get a cameo in the last ep if they keep the current pace. she might not talk but its a good possibility that she'll walk by the 4 members.
Well episode 9 is titled the New Member, so I'm pretty sure we're getting her joining. Just don't know how far it will go.
Probably up to the third concert, it seems to be a good stop point if you ask me.

As much as i love Mio to death, I dont think she'll outdo everyone else as much as everyone thinks. In most multi-girl shows fanbases are usually not too split. She'll also have a lot more competition than a certain pink haired tsundere. I feel a lot of the characters will get second or third votes.

I agree I suppose some of Mio fans, especially those that prefer DFC, are going to transfer to Azusa to some extent. Its even addressed by the mangaka that they are too alike, albeit the difference in breast size.
But since I belong to Team Melonpan there's not a part of Mio that I do not like.
The "New Member" might be someone else that is looking to join the band. I seem to recall a chapter about one of Ui's friends being interested before becoming a high school student, while Azusa joined after becoming a student.
Well I bet Episode 9 will be Azusa, while episode 8 is the trying to recruit new members, maybe the second concert in that episode.
Edit: On Episode titles, 8 is New Member, 9 is Newly Entered Member, according to ANN. I was slightly off when I said ep 9 earlier.

I think the anime would be similar to Hidamari Sketch. Two seasons of 13 eps + extras. However, we might have to wait a while more for our 2nd season.
That would make sense since this was an unknown quantity in a recession. Kyoto wouldn't know if it would be a hit or a miss, thus making enough for a season now, and if it works a second season later. It appears it is working.

Imouto being the mature one while Onee-chan being the not so mature one
usually I think this type of thing is only really done ok most of the time but I really like it here. Ui comes across better than most Imoutos in this case which I think makes it work alot better.

Anyway, to me, club activities should not be taken to the level of Serious Business. Then again, since the band doesn't have the basics in place yet, they should polish up before starting the slacking schedule.
Ui joining the club would be a major coup for Yui.

The manga only has 28 chapters at this point, split into 2 volumes.
So no one knows the answer to your question.
So after catching up, where do you think the anime will end? At the rate it's going, I'm pretty damn sure a second season is in the works as we speak. I'm expecting the anime to get to at least two concerts, with the second one being the one they perform for the Freshmens (Or they can can branch off from the manga all together and have the live Budokan concert this season but whatever). After that Nakako can introduce herself and reveal her interest in joining the Light Music Club, and it's a smooth sail to a second season from there.
What I don't like about the chapters I've read though, is that they seem to be re-using old settings and gags... and just throwing Nakako into the mix. I mean, another test dilemma, but it's Ritsu instead of Yui this time. Not only that, but they go to one of Mugi's villas again? Really?
Or maybe I'm just butt hurt buy the fact that they're getting even lazier about the Light Music Club. >_>
There are scenes in the OP that are from later on in the manga judging by the cloths the girls are wearing.

Yui's suggestion of "Clenched Fist" for a band name would actually work, if they were a metal band, or if Mio wasn't writing fluffy lyrics at least... :p

Well part of the K-ON club staying afloat is recruiting new members.
Remember the K-ON club initially had zero members till Ritsu and Mio revied it.
The way I see it Yui, Mugi, Ritsu and Mio are the sempai and Azuza and temporarily Ui are the kohai.

I just noticed how the Yui effect is moving onto the rest of the gang. Even Ritsu and partially Mio are starting to lose focus soon and focusing on the club less. Asuza is like the perfect member they were looking for in Yui.
If they get to animating that chapter, will they have Ui's actress voicing Yui as an impersonator, or just have Yui's actress voice Ui doing Yui until things because more obvious. Of course she's suppose to have had a cold so she could use an off voice I suppose.
And Azunyan seems to be the focus of the "abuse" now rather than Mio...though they still get to Mio every once in a while.

The current lineup of Iron Maiden (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Iron_Maiden_band_members) is a 6-member band that includes 3 guitarists; I wouldn't see anything wrong with the band growing to that kind of a size as it would make them pretty dynamic...
Of course, there's only one thing that Iron Maiden's 3 guitarists don't have that the band could possibly have: Ego clash... :p

Haha, I doubt so that would happen with skills per se, though things like the form and size of the hand, how slender your fingers are and things like that actually are. In my case, my younger siblings inherited my mom's slender and long fingers, and they can actually do 10 and 11 note intervals on the piano with relative ease o_o On contrast I inherited my dad's regular hands with slightly fat fingers, and 9 note intervals are the most I can do regularly, while I could do 10ths with some stretching, and 11ths were out of my reach :(
Yui and Ui seems to have identical builds, though Ui seems more intelligent. It is possible that she is a slower learner at guitar than Yui, but Ui retains the knowledge better than her spacy sister, thus doesn't have to relearn things.

You know, something occurred to me...Not quite an insta-god situation, but still somewhat related...
A long time before there was a band called "Van Halen" and half of the line-up were still children, Eddie Van Halen used to play drums while his brother Alex Van Halen used to play guitar...While Eddie was out delivering papers to pay for his drum set, Alex would practice playing on Eddie's drum set...Once Eddie watched Alex blow away his talent by playing the drum solo to "Wipe Out", Eddie picked up guitar after that and practiced practically endlessly...Anyone that knows anything about Eddie Van Halen would know about his skill on the guitar, and Alex Van Halen on the drums...
Case in point: It's not that far-fetched that Ui could possibly play guitar better than Yui...Maybe there's no such thing as an instrument swap in that case, but it's still completely possible one sibling could be better skilled or suited at an instrument than another sibling...
The insta-god situation is still in play, of course... :p

My feelings towards Ui and Yui and their abilities is that Yui probably has some learning difficulties.
Abilities are genetic and so are learning difficulties and unfortunatly one kid can be problem free and the other one can have alot, dysabilities like dyslexia and dyspraxia can make learning pretty hard which tends to make it boring and something the individual dreds doing (which would explain why Yui would rather play guitar then study) but it doesnt reflect intelligence people with learning difficulties are often very intelligent and can do amazing things if they really put their mind to it but its very easy to get distracted and do something they enjoy.

Bumping thread for a semi-important announcement (very important if you can read Mandarin, but not Japanese, like me): K-On is getting an official Taiwanese Mandarin translation. It's done by Jian Duan Publishing, who also carries Hidamari Sketch. Vol 1 out 12th June. Don't miss it!
You know, it would be funny, in a bad way, if they followed the manga exactly for the next concert. Meaning they show us nothing of it, but the aftermath remains the same (they sucked).
I don't know if "they sucked" can be animated on stage and have it come though to the audiance (unless it is very obvious...or perhaps they only think they sucked because they know they messed up...but no one else does). But not showing it at all may be even worse than showing it...especially this close to the end (and KyoAni had been known in the past for making excellent episode 12s).
Of course I wonder if they can (or will even try) to pull off the Ui-Yui thing. It is one thing in a 4koma that is only visual...it will be the audio that is the problem.
I like how they manged to get in one of the "eatable" Mugi's eyebrows jokes in before the end. And the Ui-Yui thing worked out fine.

After watching Ep 12 , i started check out the manga and actually really like how the manga sort out character's personalities.
Certainly i love several moments and details where anime played a much better role, still the anime directorship/adaptation need lots more improvement

The anime follows the manga with the manga being released a long time before any anime episode even gets put up on a sketchboard; And with episode 12 going in a different direction from whichever manga chapter that performance was covered in, I highly doubt the manga will change it's own direction to suit the anime...
On the other hand, whenever they get around to a second season of the anime, I wonder how they're going to run with either adapting or reconning itself to the manga establishment given the anime difference...
It might just be my imagination, but the episode 12 performance wasn't all that big of a difference. In the manga their performance sucked, in the anime their performance was a success... in the end they can both move on with their lives.
I don't see why it would be so hard to recon itself to the manga anyways, I mean it's a 4koma honestly.

Also, another performance! Light and Fluffy Time again! It doesn't really matter in the manga though, but they could really have a wider selection of tracks. Thankfully they didn't decide to follow the same trend in the anime ( for the most part).
Mio's line to Nodoka about her reaction actually being normal got a chuckle out of me. Must be hard dealing with a bunch of crazies every day, but she manages~
Also lack of both Ui and Asuza is not good for my heart.

Well both were pretty decent chapters filled with giggles. I'm surprised it took this long to actually do a valentine-centric chapter, but they pulled it off pretty well. Yui and Asuza really are starting to become my favorite characters in the series, and I got a good chuckle on how the tables turned and Asuza was the one mad at Yui for actually practicing her guitar.
Next chapter was just as amusing, glad to see Sawako's crazy side that I loved so much come out once in a while. Those girls have guts thought, I'd wet myself just at the thought of attempting to lie to a teacher like Sawako.

Odd that the end is apparently so near, especially considering they didn't actually get any new members this time around. Will they really shift the focus to Asuza and Ui? Will they follow around the original cast as they move on from their lives? A combination of both? Either way I'm interested...
Oh, and I'm also glad they decided to perform something other than Fuwa Fuwa Time!

If you paid attention, she slept over with the girls in school in the runup to their second concert (chapter 12). In fact, she fell asleep before the girls did.

According to the scanslator Japan is being weird and the August issue is actually already released a week ago, lol. So we'll have one chapter before the long wait.
Not a bad chapter... ^^;; As much as I love seeing Yui being Yui I sometimes worry about her in the future and the family she will support...
Why do I have the iamge that her children will end up being more dependable than her? :heh:
